Two Nigerian students sentenced to death for trafficking drugs in Malaysia | Mr Olumide's Blog

Posted: 21 Dec 2017 03:08 AM PST

Two Nigerian college students were on the 20th of December sentenced death by a Malaysian High Court for trafficking 3.5 kilogrammes of methamphetamine three years ago.

New Strait Times Malaysia report that Shah Alam High Court judge Datuk Abdul Halim Aman made the ruling against the accused, Mustafa Azmir, 28, and Jude Nnamdi Achonye, 30.

According to the criminal charge brought against them, Mustafa and Jude were accused of trafficking the drugs at an apartment in Petaling Jaya at 3.30pm on Sept 2, 2014.

The facts of the case stated that the accused, who studied at a private college in Kuala Lumpur, were arrested by police when they accepted several boxes containing the drug which was delivered by a courier company at the apartment.

Abdul Halim, in his ruling, said the court had studied testimonies from 13 prosecution witnesses and two defence witnesses, alongside 73 exhibits tendered during the trial.

"The defence had failed to raise reasonable doubt at the end of this case and presented no testimony that thoroughly refutes the prosecution.

"Besides that, there were also discrepancies in testimonies of the accused and their defence only amounted to denial without concrete evidence," he said.

Deputy public prosecutor Mohd Rehan Mohd Aris appeared for the prosecution, while the accused were represented by lawyer Leonard Anselm Gomes.

Photos:Nigerian man rescues wife from committing suicide over house rent | Mr Olumide's Blog

Posted: 21 Dec 2017 03:08 AM PST

A Nigerian man identified as Kenny, has revealed how he saved his wife from committing suicide, after she spent the money for their house rent that he kept with her.

According to online reports, the husband said

"My house rent expired last month, so I told my landlord to give me till the end of December to put myself in order because I was thinking of travelling with my family.
Before then, I gave my wife 75% of the house rent to keep pending when I will complete it. I just received a call from my office today that salaries are being paid today, besides I am on night duty so it will be till evening before I will receive mine.I asked my wife to get the money ready that I am going to compete it today to enable me pay the house rent tomorrow against the deadline which is on 24th of this month, only for her to tell me that she has spent the money on our feeding.
I got angry and yelled at her and called her close friend to ask her where she kept the money. There's no day I don't provide for the family, so how come she spent the money on the family? .
So after all said and done. I got angry and went out with my 1 year old daughter to cool by temper with a bottle of Hero. Then entering the house I saw her hanged herself. So I rushed and echoed for help. Please, if u are in my shoe, what will u do?"

Catholic priest openly comes out as Gay | Mr Olumide's Blog

Posted: 21 Dec 2017 02:18 AM PST

A Roman Catholic priest came out to his parishioners Sunday and to the rest of the world Monday in a first-person column in National Catholic Reporter.

The Rev. Gregory Greiten of St. Bernadette Catholic church here said he was breaking the silence of gay men in the clergy so he could reclaim his own voice.

"I am Greg. I am a Roman Catholic priest. And, yes, I am gay!" he told worshipers Sunday. He received a standing ovation.
While gay men do serve as priests, rarely does priest to come out to his parishioners in this way.
Church theology teaches that acting upon homosexuality is a sin. All priests take a vow of celibacy.

In announcing his identity as a gay man, Greiten chastised the Catholic Church for its stance on homosexuality.
By choosing to enforce silence, the institutional church pretends that gay priests and religious do not really exist. Because of this, there are no authentic role models of healthy, well-balanced, gay, celibate priests to be an example for those, young and old, who are struggling to come to terms with their sexual orientation. This only perpetuates the toxic shaming and systemic secrecy.
Greiten wrote that he stands with the "few courageous priests who have taken the risk to come out of the shadows and have chosen to live in truth and authenticity."
I promise to be my authentically gay self. I will embrace the person that God created me to be.
In my priestly life and ministry, I, too, will help you, whether you are gay or straight, bisexual or transgendered, to be your authentic self — to be fully alive living in your image and likeness of God. In reflecting our God-images out into the world, our world will be a brighter, more tolerant place.
I have lived far too many years chained up and imprisoned in the closet behind walls of shame, trauma and abuse because of the homophobia and discrimination so prevalent in my church and the world. But rather, today, I chart a new course in freedom and in integrity knowing that there is nothing that anyone can do to hurt or destroy my spirit any longer.
First steps in accepting and loving the person God created me to be: 'I am Greg. I am a Roman Catholic priest. And, yes, I am gay!'

Whether Greiten will face any consequences for his admission likely will depend on Milwaukee's archbishop, the Most Rev. Jerome Listecki.

Everything You Do in Life Should be for the Glory of God

Posted: 21 Dec 2017 01:07 AM PST

We live in a time of overlap between the ages. What one theologian called "the time between the times." Because so many people are blind to God's glory, we, as God's people, are to live in such a way that people start to see God's presence and beauty.

But notice Paul's examples. "Whether you eat or drink . . ." What could be more ordinary and humdrum than eating and drinking? And then Paul says, "or whatever you do." Wow, so no matter what it is we do — everything — the most mundane, unimportant stuff in our life, should be "for the glory of God."

So the question is, how do we glorify God with all of our lives, not just the overtly "spiritual" stuff?

But with everything we do — all the way down to eating and drinking?

For some people, it's an easy answer. If you're a pastor or a "missionary" or a parent or an artist or you work for a faith-based nonprofit — somewhere you can openly talk about Jesus. Then it's clear.

But what if you're an executive assistant at an attorney's office? Or a mechanic for your local Toyota dealership? Or an insurance broker? How do you glorify God with your life's work?

Well, here's my take: we're the image of God, remember? Our job is to make the invisible God visible — to mirror and mimic what he is like to the world. We can glorify God by doing our work in such a way that we make the invisible God visible by what we do and how we do it.

Let's take each one in turn. First off, by what we do . . .

The Anglican writer John Stott said the kind of work we're called to is, "The expenditure of energy (manual or mental or both) in the service of others, which brings fulfillment to the worker, benefit to the community, and glory to God."

Most of us get the first part of that definition: "Fulfillment to the worker" — Ideally, your work should be a vocation, a calling, work that you feel God made you to do and that you love. And a lot of us get the second part: "Benefit to the community" — it should make the world into a more Garden-like place. But what about "glory to God"? How do we do that?

Well, if God's glory is his presence and beauty, then, as I see it, we glorify God by reshaping the raw materials of the world in such a way that, for those with eyes to see, God's glory and presence are made visible.

When we see a piece of art, we see behind the art and get a glimpse of what the artist is like.

In the same way, when we see creation, we see behind the creation and get a picture of what the Creator is like.

In Romans we read, "Since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities — his eternal power and divine nature — have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse."

Theologians call this general revelation. It's the idea that every- body everywhere has at least some revelation of who God is and what he's like, just by living in his world. Romans is just picking up on the Hebrew poetry we read earlier: "The heavens speak of the glory of God."

How does a star "speak of the glory of God"? It's an inanimate object. It makes no sound, much less language — how does it speak?
By being a star.

How does a tree speak of the glory of God?
By being a tree.

How does a lion speak?
By roaring loud.

How does a flower speak?
By unfolding its color every spring.

When we see the world in the shape that God intended, the way it's supposed to be, God gets glory, without a word.

As people made in God's image, we can join him in this ongoing creative work. As his partners, we can reshape the raw materials of his world in such a way that people see the beauty behind the beauty.

We can't make the world — but we can remake it into a macchiato, a building, an app, a dress, a book, a meal, a school, a cure, a song, a business, or ten thousand other things in such a way that for those with eyes to see — the invisible God's presence and beauty are more than visible — they are glaring and inescapable.

This means we need to learn how to value beauty for beauty's sake. Maybe even for God's sake.

Maybe this is why, historically, some of the world's greatest artists have been followers of Jesus. They had such a compelling vision of God that they had to reshape the world to help others see who he is and what he's like. In fact, the first time we read the phrase "filled with the Spirit of God," it's in the book of Exodus . . .

So the first person who is "filled with the Spirit of God" isn't a prophet or a priest or a king — he's an artist. And what was the Spirit of God doing in him? Giving him "wisdom, with understanding" and "knowledge" and "all kinds of skills" to make art.

Sometimes in our quest against injustice and greed and waste and in our passion to steward the wealth of the West in a kingdom-of-God-like way, it's easy to overreact and devalue the things that God himself values, like art or beauty. But that's a problem, because we worship an artist God.

As people made in his image — all work is artistic. All work is inherently creative. All work — from painting to parenting — is reshaping the raw materials of Planet Earth in such a way that it's how God intended, how it's supposed to be, all so humans can thrive as they see God's glory.

Woman Accused As $40,000 Disappears from NFF Office in Abuja

Posted: 21 Dec 2017 12:37 AM PST

It has happened again. It is not the first time huge amount of money will mysteriously get missing at the glass house of the Nigeria Football Federation in Abuja.

The latest happened last month and a young lady who was working as an intern in the NFF allegedly took the missing $40,000 with the intention of returning the money after doubling it via voodoo. For real?

According to the report on 90minuts Goal, the woman who allegedly stole the money and who is said to be a sister to an ex-president of the Nigeria Football Federation, picked four bundles of $10,000 and took to her heels leaving her handbag at the scene of the crime.

The lady whose name was not mentioned then handed the money to two men who assured her of doubling the money to $80,000 within 48 hours.

"Yes two middle aged men have been arrested in connection to the money theft at the NFF. The men confessed to the Police of being money doublers and confirmed that the lady actually gave them the money to double for her", a top source at the NFF told 90minutes Goal.

You would recall that the Nigeria football Federation is in huge debt as it continues to make plans and source for funds for the World Cup. And that only recently the Sports ministry said it needed N3billion ($8340000) to persecute next year's World Cup.

You would also recall that this is not the first time money especially foreign currencies will go missing in the NFF. In March 2009, the accounts department of the NFF was broken into, and $200,000 was carted away from one of the drawers.

In 2012, $80,000 was alleged to have gone missing, but the NFF denied such ever happened. Ironically, the NFF is yet to issue an official statement about the latest incident.

Venus Williams won't face charges in deadly crash | Mr Olumide's Blog

Posted: 21 Dec 2017 12:33 AM PST

Venus Williams won't face legal charges in a June car accident that left one dead.

The driver of the other vehicle, which T-boned the tennis pro, is also in the clear according to a police investigation that concluded neither was at fault.
"Based upon this investigation and relevant Florida state statutes, no charges will be filed in this case," according to an 18-page traffic homicide investigation released Wednesday by Palm Beach Gardens police.

Jerome Barson, 78, was a passenger in a 2016 Hyundai Accent driven by his wife, Linda Barson, 68. The car T-boned Williams' Toyota Sequoia as she waited in an intersection in Palm Beach Gardens. Jerome Barson died 13 days after the June 9 wreck.
Williams was not injured.

In the aftermath of the crash, Williams explained to an officer that a dark-colored car turned left in front of her, trapping her in the intersection when her light turned red and before she was T-boned by the Barsons' Hyundai. In July Florida police obtained video supporting Williams' claim that she was doing nothing illegal when the accident occurred.

The Barson family initially sued Williams for allegedly causing the accident and running a red light.

5 Ways To Make Your Holiday Travel Less Stressful

Posted: 20 Dec 2017 09:32 PM PST

The festive season is here again and it is the time many people travel to different destinations within and outside Nigeria. You know that travelling during this period can be very hectic and stressful. But while the crowds at airports and parks aren't going anywhere, there are steps you can take to make the experience a little easier.

Jumia Travel shares ways you can make holiday travel less stressful.

Avoid peak travel dates The peak travel dates for the festive season are Christmas and New Year. So, if you want to travel and also want to save a lot of money, you should get to your destinations a week or days before these peak travel dates.

Book everything well in advance Book hotels, transfers, tours and other activities well in advance to avoid disappointment and to also get the best deals. Flights and accommodation can even be double the price during peak seasons.

Be flexible If you're serious about saving, then being flexible about your departure date or time will potentially save you hundreds of naira. Look out for anti-social timed departures such as very early morning or late at night for the best deals. Avoid travelling out on Friday nights or back on Sunday nights or Monday mornings because these times are always hectic.

Pick a lesser-known destination Instead of visiting the same places as everyone else, why not explore a new location which is lesser-known and therefore less crowded during peak times? For example, Dubai is a destination Nigerians frequent while Kajuru Castle in Kaduna is a tourism hub that quite a number of people overlook. It is advisable to vacation in Kajuru Castle as this involves little or no stress.

Pack wisely If you do not want to lose your luggage, pack wisely. This is because almost everyone is travelling at the same time and besides if you overpack, you will find it extremely difficult to navigate with your luggage. A simple carry on bag is fine.

Reformed SARS to fight violent crimes | Mr Olumide's Blog

The Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) will now focus on violent crimes, Inspector-General Ibrahim Idris has said.

The police chief spoke yesterday in Abuja at the last meeting of the year with Commissioners of Police and other senior officers.
He warned police officers to avoid temptation from politicians as the 2019 election draws near.

Commissioner of Police, SARS, Haliru Gwandu, who spoke on the reorganisation in the squad, said:
"Under the reorganisation, the SARS now will be under the supervision of CP Commands.
"The commands will supervise the activities of SARS and the central administration will now be under the FSARS."

On their area of focus, Gwandu said:
"There are so many things that SARS are asked not to do. For now, they are going to concentrate only on violent crimes, robbery, kidnapping, murder, cultism and other related violence.
"Also, those tactical teams in the commands, zones and divisions, who usually wear the outfit of SARS, will no longer wear it.

"The issue of extrajudicial killings and other crimes will be a thing of the past. They will also be attending local and international training and retraining that will focus on human rights to make SARS friendly to the population."

Gwandu, promising that the reorganisation would lead to a better SARS, also said the activities of the squad would be reported to members of the public to avoid infractions.

EFCC releases Innoson CEO on bail | Mr Olumide's Blog

Posted: 20 Dec 2017 07:28 PM PST

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission said it has released on bail, Anambra state-born industrialist, Chief Innocent Chukwuma, better known as Innoson.

The business man who runs a local auto assembly plant was arrested on Tuesday December 19, 2017 at his Enugu residence, following his refusal to respond to invitations by the Commission, after initially being granted administrative bail by the Commission, while his surety could also not be found.

According to the EFCC, the industrialist resisted arrest and stirred controversy by bringing six truck-loads of thugs to block the entrance to his Plot W1, Industrial Layout, Abakaliki Road, Emeni, Enugu, home.

This was after he initially misled the Police Command by informing them that his home had been invaded by armed robbers and kidnappers despite the fact that operatives of the Commission duly identified themselves to policemen guarding his home.

His unruly thugs encircled and manhandled operatives of the Commission who had gone to effect the arrest.

Consequently, a distress call was sent to the Commission's Enugu Office for reinforcement.

In all of this, the Commission's operatives acted with decorum and civility. No one was manhandled or assaulted by the EFCC team, and not a single shot was fired, despite the provocation.

Chief Chukwuma and his brother, Charles Chukwuma (who is still at large), are being investigated by the Insurance and Capital Market Fraud Section of the Commission's office in Lagos over matters bordering on N1, 478, 366, 859.66 fraud and forgery.

The industrialist, among other infractions, allegedly used forged documents to secure tax waivers

Israeli Army arrests Palestinian girl who slapped soldiers | Mr Olumide's Blog

Posted: 20 Dec 2017 07:03 PM PST

The Israeli army arrested a 17-year-old Palestinian girl on Tuesday after a video showing her slapping Israeli soldiers went viral on social media.

Shot on Friday, the video shows the suspect Ahed Tamimi and another Palestinian teen approaching two Israeli soldiers — then shoving, kicking and slapping them while the soldiers remained relatively impassive before moving backwards.

A second video showed the girls asking the soldiers to move, since they were blocking the steps to a family home in the village of Nabi Saleh in the West Bank.

Tamimi's mother was also arrested, and while Israeli police gave no reason for her detention, they did confirm that the pair would be in jail until at least Thursday.

"They didn't give a reason for her arrest," Tamimi's father Bassem told French news agency AFP. He also accused Israeli security forces of seizing mobile phones, computers and other electronics from their home.

The video has been used by the Israeli army to prove to the world that their soldiers exercise restraint, but the women's arrest in the middle of the night has been criticized by Palestinian activists.
It's not Tamimi's first brush with anti-occupation notoriety.

When she was only a child, a photograph of her standing up to Israeli soldiers earned her an invitation to meet then-Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Then in 2015, a picture of the girl biting the hand of an Israeli soldier trying to arrest her brother became a symbolic photo shared widely around the world.

Just last year, Tamimi was denied a visa by the State Department in Washington after she was invited to be part of a speaking tour titled "No Child Behind Bars/Living Resistance."

The property in question, which was registered as Number 96 at page 96 in Volume 1993p, belonged to Mr Ben Adebisi Oyekunle and Mrs Bukola Taiwo Oyekunle.

In one of the counts, Aderinokun and Abdul-Wakil and others now at large were said to have "On or about the 3rd of March, 2012 at Lekki Area of Lagos State in the Lagos Magisterial District, possessed a fraudulent document (Deed of Assignment registered as No 91 at page 91 in Volume 2399) knowing fully well that the document was false and presented same at the Lagos State Land Registry, Alausa, Ikeja for registration and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 320 of the Criminal Law Cap C17, Vol.3, Laws of Lagos State, 2015."

Specifically, Abdul-Wakil was said to have used official information at his disposal to fraudulently convert the said land for his own use contrary to the law.

After the charges were to them, the defendants pleaded not guilty, while their lawyers - Stanley Imhanruor and Sunny Ogoh urged the court to grant them bail on liberal terms.

The lawyers hinged the bail application on the grounds that the defendants had no criminal records and were appearing in court for the first time, adding that the offences for which they were charged were bailable.

On his part, the prosecutor from the Lagos State Ministry of Justice, Dr Babajide Martins applied that the defendants be remanded in custody, as well as a date for trial.

He said the application for remand was necessitated by the fact that the defendants were allegedly involved in a well-orchestrated land fraud coupled with the fact that others connected with the crime were still at large, and that releasing them on bail may jeopardize the case.

In her ruling, Magistrate Oshin admitted Aderinokun and Abdul-Wakil to bail in the sum of N10million and two responsible sureties in like sum. One of the sureties must be a civil servant not below grade level 16 in the State Public Service and must get approval of the Head of Service to stand as surety.

Oshin also ruled that the other surety must be a staff not below managerial level in a reputable organization and if self-employed must show evidence of company registration with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) with a minimum balance of N1million and tax clearance.

"The defendants are to deposit their valid international passports to the court, while the official and residential addresses of the sureties are to be verified by the prosecutor," Magistrate Oshin held.

They were ordered to be remanded in Kirikiri Maximum Security Prison pending the perfection of their bail conditions. The matter was subsequently adjourned to February 2, 2018 for trial.
