Tenure Elongation: Buhari, APC Govs’ Meeting End In Deadlock

Posted: 04 Apr 2018 12:59 AM PDT

There were indications that President Muhammadu Buhari and the All Progressives Congress governors' meeting at the Presidential Villa on Tuesday ended in deadlock as the two parties failed to make any decision on the tenure of the APC National Working Committee members.

Why they kept mum after the meeting at the Presidential Villa?

It was learnt that both the President and the governors later agreed that the committee set up by the National Chairman of the party, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, on the issue earlier on Tuesday should be allowed to do its work and submit its report.

The meeting which was held inside the Council Chambers started around 2.15pm and ended at 3.30pm.

At the end of the meeting which sources described as stormy, the governors who were approached for comment told State House correspondents that they had resolved not to speak to journalists.

Those who were approached included the Chairman of the Progressives Governors Forum, Rochas Okorocha; Plateau State Governor, Simon Lalong, and Kaduna State Governor, Nasir el-Rufai.

Some other governors held their lips to express their non-readiness to speak to reporters.

The contentious issue of tenure extension for members of the party's National Working Committee was said to have dominated discussions at the meeting.

After the meeting reportedly ended in deadlock, it was also learnt that there was a sharp disagreement among the governors over the choice of date to reconvene.

Before the meeting went into a closed door session, Buhari had nominated Lalong and the Kebbi State Governor, Atiku Bagudu, to say the opening prayers.

All the APC state governors attended the meeting. The Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo and some top presidential aides and government officials also attended.

Buhari, had, at the party's NEC meeting on March 28, said the NWC members, who wanted to retain their positions, should resign and re-contest.

He said it would be illegal to prolong the tenure of the NWC members or set up a caretaker committee.

It was agreed at the meeting that the party should set up a committee that would advise it on the NWC members' tenure.

Odigie-Oyegun, at the party's national secretariat on Tuesday, inaugurated a 10-member committee headed by Lalong to advise the APC on the issue.

Apart from Lalong, other members of the committee inaugurated by Odigie-Oyegun are the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha; Governor Abiola Ajimobi (Oyo), Governor Rotimi Akeredolu (Ondo), Governor Nasir el-Rufai (Kaduna), Senator Ben Uwajomogu, Kabiru Ajana, Mr. Elisha Kurah (SAN), Mr. C.J.N. Dakas (SAN) and the National Legal Adviser of the party, Dr. Muiz Banire, who is also the secretary of the committee.

Odigie-Oyegun said some of the issues that had been remitted to the committee for resolution were strongly legal, adding that the matter also impacted dramatically on political considerations.

He said, "Therefore, your job is to bring these two together and advise us on the way we can implement our activities in the next few weeks and months in a way that is politically advantageous to our party, the APC, and at the same time with deference to the niceties of the law.

"We must observe the law and at the same time emphasise that we try to do things that will be advantageous to the party.

"We will furnish you with all the documents like the resolutions of NEC, the party's constitution and the Nigerian constitution to help you do a good job.

"Getting answers from you is crucially time sensitive and depending on which way you advise, we may have to put in motion very serious activities in the party virtually within a week of getting the report and taking decisions."

The Punch reports that the committee is expected to submit its report within four days.

Gov. Yahaya Bello trips, falls off his car, injures left foot

Posted: 04 Apr 2018 12:39 AM PDT

Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State fell off while alighting from his official car on Friday, March 30, and injured his left foot, a statement from the Kogi Government House, Lokoja, said on Tuesday.

The statement signed by the Director General, Media and Publicity to the Governor, Mr. Kingsley Fanwo, said the incident happened at the Old Market area in Lokoja, when the governor was waiting to receive the Speaker of the House of Reps, Mr. Yakubu Dogara.

The Speaker had visited Lokoja for the burial of Mr. Umar Buba Jibril, a member of the House of Representatives, who died in Abuja on Friday.

"The injury prevented the governor from attending the burial of Jibril. He was represented by his deputy, Mr. Simon Achuba," the statement said.

It dismissed claims that Bello was hospitalised and incapacitated, stating that the governor was promptly treated by his doctors, who bandaged the leg and discharged him.

The government thanked the governor's supporters for their concern over his health, saying that Bello was doing well and would resume work after the Easter holidays.

NAN reported that the clarification was necessitated by reports that the governor was critically injured in the accident.

However, a source who witnessed the accident told The Punch that the governor, who was trying to alight from his car, a BMW which is smaller than his official Prado Jeep, tripped and sprained his left ankle and his two arms.

The eyewitness disclosed further that the car dragged the governor for some metres before he was rescued by some people and his security details.

He added that the governor was rushed to one of the private hospitals in Abuja for further treatment.

But Fanwo, in a statement on Tuesday, said Bello only injured his left foot while alighting from the vehicle.

Due to the accident, Bello on Tuesday attended a meeting at the Presidential Villa, Abuja on crutches.

The meeting was between President Muhammadu Buhari and all the governors elected on the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress.

Bello attracted the attention of his colleagues and others when he arrived the Council Chambers venue of the meeting on crutches.

"Buhari's Government Is A Failure"; PDP, Others Support Obasanjo

Posted: 04 Apr 2018 12:04 AM PDT

The Peoples Democratic Party and the Coalition for Nigeria Movement have supported former President Olusegun Obasanjo's assertion that President Muhammadu Buhari administration is a failure.

The PDP and the CNM, which stated this in separate interviews with The Punch on Tuesday, advised Buhari to accept criticisms.

The opposition party said that the former President spoke the minds of Nigerians on Buhari's performance.

The National Chairman of the PDP, Prince Uche Secondus, said that the PDP was not surprised at the summation of the President's scorecard as a failure by the former President.

He said, "President Obasanjo spoke the minds of Nigerians on the performance of President Buhari. We all know that the President has not done well. It is clear that the ruling party and the Presidency are asleep and do not know what to do with power.

"The President has no economic blueprint, nothing on security and nothing on infrastructural development. His main agenda is to come and fight perceived enemies and also bring his relations to government. That is why he is surrounded by his relations only."

He, however, disagreed with Obasanjo on the apology the PDP offered to Nigerians and members of the party.

On its part, the CNM asked Buhari to accept the criticisms and stop being recalcitrant. The spokesman for the CNM, Mr. Akin Osuntokun, said this during an interview with one of our correspondents on Tuesday.

He said Buhari had done nothing but had been giving excuses in the last three years, adding that his penchant for blaming his predecessor was no longer amusing to Nigerians.

Osuntokun said, "When Obasanjo became President in 1999, there were many challenges he inherited from the past military governments but he was working. Buhari has been in power for nearly three years and he continues to blame the past government.

"Government is a continuum. Was he not expecting to meet any challenges? Which government doesn't inherit challenges? Let him tell the world what he has accomplished in the face of challenges.

"He claims to be fighting corruption but the Transparency International has rated Nigeria worse than it did during Jonathan's government. Under Buhari, Nigeria has become more divided than ever. We stand with Obasanjo."

But a senior lawyer, Festus Keyamo, on his twitter handle, berated Obasanjo.

He stated, "For the records, the 2007 elections over which he (Obasanjo) presided was adjudged one of the worst the world has ever seen, prompting President Yar'Adua to apologise to Nigerians.

"Since 1960, a few people have always determined who would govern all of us. They are the ones now writing letters and inciting the people. 2019 would be a defining moment as the people of this country will truly determine their own fate and put these self-conceited leaders to ultimate shame."

However, a member of the National Executive Committee of the ruling All Progressives Congress, Alhaji Nasiru Danu, asked Nigerians to continue to support Buhari.

He said that the statements credited to Obasanjo on the re-election bid of the President were his personal opinion, adding that the ex-President could not speak for Nigerians.

On his part, CD President, Abdul, said "I agree with former President Obasanjo's narrative of the Buhari administration. Obasanjo is right. The scorecard of this administration is very low, if we want to be very sincere with ourselves. Look at the economy and see the decay. Even on the fight against corruption and arrest of looters, what we have is selected trials..."

How One Single High School Produced The CEOs Of Microsoft, Adobe & MasterCard

Posted: 03 Apr 2018 08:29 AM PDT

According to the writer, if you're looking to raise one of the most powerful business leaders in the world, you might want to send your kid to Hyderabad Public School, Begumpet, in India.

In an interview with Stephen Dubner on an episode of the "Freakonomics" podcast, Microsoft CEO, Satya Nadella said;
not only did he attend the high school, but so did Shantanu Narayen, the CEO of Adobe, and Ajay Banga, the CEO of Mastercard.

Hyderabad Public School is what Americans would consider a private school - though in India, like England, such schools are called public schools.

According to Hyderabad Public School's website, it was established in 1923 as a school for the sons of aristocrats, modeled after Eton College in London. Last year, it was ranked one of the top 10 schools in India.

The school is in Hyderabad, the southern Indian city that has become a tech hub. Since 1990, Hyderabad has been home to the headquarters of Microsoft India.

"Attending the HPS was the best break I had in my life," Nadella said when he visited the school last year, according to The Hindu.

Nadella played cricket at the school, and he has spoken before about how the sport influenced his career. In a recent interview at Wharton Business School, Nadella said he learned from his high-school cricket coach how to walk the line "between having confidence in your own capability yet having the ability to learn."

Nadella also met his wife, Anupama Nadella, at Hyderabad Public School.

The school's core values, according to its website, include "strong self-esteem" and "tolerance and respect for others." The school motto? "Be vigilant."

The website says: "These words exhort young students to be mentally alert, physically ready to take up the challenges that life has to offer."
