Obasanjo: "I Have No Candidate For 2019"

Posted: 08 Feb 2018 12:38 AM PST

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, PhD, says he has no candidate for any political office in 2019.

He said this on Wednesday at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential library, Abeokuta, during a courtesy visit by a youth group from Delta State led by a governorship aspirant, Frank Esanubi.

Obasanjo, who said he had taken a decision in 2015 not to participate any longer in partisan politics, added that he would rather remain an elder statesman having a passion for a greater Nigeria.

He further explained that his recent open letter to President Muhammadu Buhari was not in any way to disrespect him or his office.

Obasanjo said in the letter he was only articulating his views about the situation in the country and offering his candid advice.

He explained that his statement was thoroughly thought out, adding that as a former President, he could not hold the office of the President in contempt.

Obasanjo, however, reiterated that the Coalition for Nigeria Movement would remain a socio-political movement, insisting that he would cease to be a member of the coalition the moment it transformed into a political party or became partisan.

He said, "In the year 2015, I said I would no longer participate in partisan politics. And I still stand by my decision.

"Everybody, irrespective of his or her political affiliation is free to come here for advice, I will gladly do that. I have no candidate, whatsoever, for any political office. I just believe that things must be done differently in Nigeria to get different result.

"If you study our transitions since the colonial era, they have all taken place without taking the people at the grassroots into consideration.

"So, the CNM is about the people at the grassroots. It is a socio-economic movement where youth and women, especially, will be given an opportunity to appreciate their interests and power. Unlike before, I believe we must put the Ox before the cart.

"If the system and the platform sync, I believe Nigeria will get there. And like I said, the moment the coalition gets involved in candidate sponsoring or participates in partisan politics, I will opt out of it."

Armed Robbers Shoot, Rob Man in Front of Bank

Posted: 08 Feb 2018 12:23 AM PST

A man was attacked by armed robbers in front of a bank at Ajibade bus stop on Mokola/Sango Road, Ibadan, Oyo State, on Wednesday as he made his way into the bank.

A crowd of sympathisers and onlookers gathered around him as he writhed in pain after being shot in both legs by one of the robbers.

According to the victim, he was brought to the area by a commercial motorcyclist and soon after he paid the fare, he was accosted by two men who also came on a motorcycle.

He said they demanded that he brought out the money on him, with a threat to shoot if he refused.

"I thought they were men of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, so I explained to them that I was not a thief and that I was going to the bank. But one of them brought out a gun and when I delayed in handing over the money, he shot me in both legs. I gave the money to them," said the victim.

The Punch later gathered that N1.7m was snatched from the victim.

The commercial motorcyclist who brought him to the area said immediately he dropped him at the bus stop, he heard two gunshots and suspected that his last passenger could be the victim.

He said, "I brought him here some minutes ago and as soon as he dropped, I picked another passenger to Sango. I had only moved a few metres away when I heard two gunshots. I feared that he could be the victim because the sound of the gunshot was from where I had dropped him. On my way back, I saw a crowd and my fear was confirmed when I saw him in a pool of blood."

The motorcyclist said he picked up the robbery victim at Mokola and was suspicious of two men on another motorcycle behind them.

"I suspected their riding pattern. The motorcycle they used had a Lagos number plate. They followed us closely and at a point, they wanted to overtake us, but they did not. When I dropped him at the bus stop, they were also there. I did not know that my passenger had money on him. If I had known, I would have alerted him to the suspicious behaviour of the two men on the motorcycle," he added.

A team of policemen later arrived at the scene and took the victim to a hospital in front of the bank.

Why Nigeria Needs A Movement Not Political Parties - Pat Utomi

Posted: 07 Feb 2018 09:53 AM PST

Commenting on Nigeria political system and the race for 2019 elections, Prof. Pat Utomi posited that the country does not need many political parties as it exist today. He recommended that what Nigeria need is a movement that will form the perception of the masses.

The professor of political economy maintained that movements are meant to shapen the ideologies of political parties. He further advised existing movements to come together as one to determine the direction of the country's political system.

He also lamented that Nigeria political atmosphere lacks stronger citizenship behavior, noting the need for citizens to be more engaged in politics.

He said, "There are several initiatives like Restoration Group, NIM, and CNM, the one Obasanjo is generating. At some point, everybody should be able to talk to one another and say let's not be splitting heads. To the best of my knowledge, what is required is the movement not so much political parties."

"People from the movement can go into political parties that they desire to go into because movement is a consciousness thing."

"We obviously are going to encourage people to go into their parties and reform them. If you are from the APC or any other party, you should take over the way things work to elevate the quality of engagement." He added.

Noting the need for youth to be actively involved in the country's politics, Utomi expressed that young people must be exposed and empowered to take over leadership positions in the country.

"We must begin to incorporate more young people. Young people today are more expose and one of the mistakes we make is saying young people are not smart. We must begin to socialize them, make them more active and involved and many of them can run this country."

He further encouraged the youths to organize and take over the political space. He also added that youths could determine who attain each position in the country advising that they (youths) should vote differently in 2019.

Nigerian Woman Who Killed Her Husband Sentenced To Death

Posted: 07 Feb 2018 09:53 AM PST

The High Court sitting in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, on Wednesday sentenced 30-year-old Victoria Gariga to death by hanging for killing her husband, the late Mr. Henry, a lawyer.

She killed him just a year after their marriage.

The court presided over by Justice Nayai Aganaba said the woman committed the crime on February 4, 2015 at their residence along Ebisam road in Akenfa, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.

The victim, a lawyer from Sagbama local government area of the state and the convict from Brass were cohabiting for years before they legalised their union in 2014.

The union was yet to produce children before the unfortunate incident.

On the fateful day, Victoria stabbed her husband on the neck following a misunderstanding. He was confirmed dead by doctors at the hospital.

Aganaba while reading his judgement said the prosecution called six witnesses and produced seven exhibits while the defence lawyer had only one witness who happened to be the accused person.

Aganaba, who went through his records, averred that the onus of proof rested with the prosecution in line with the three ingredients to prove a murder case.

He named the elements of murder as the actual death of the deceased, that the death was caused by the accused person and that the action of the accused person was intentional with the knowledge that death or grievous bodily harm was its probable consequence.

The judge asserted that the circumstantial evidence against the accused was overwhelming, adding that all facts confirmed she was the only person with the deceased at the time of death and the only person with the opportunity to kill him.

He said Victoria committed a murder of passion caused by jealousy since the couple were obsessed with each other.

He said: "It is unfortunate that I can only pronounce the sentence prescribe by law. I wish I had the discretion to do otherwise.

"However that discretion rests with the Executive Governor of Bayelsa State. I am only left with the compulsion to pronounce the sentence prescribed by law. I hope that the person with the discretion would look at the circumstance of this case and do the needful.

"I hereby pronounce my sentence. My sentence upon you is that you shall hang on the neck until you die. May the Lord have mercy on your soul."
