How Police DIG Charged Murder Victim’s Family To Court & Released Main Suspects

Posted: 14 Oct 2017 04:33 AM PDT

The period between May and August, 2017 was a time of trouble and tragedy for 33-year-old Segun Salami, a resident of Ilagbo, a tiny community in Ibeju Lekki area of Lagos.

In that period, Segun lost his dad, Musiliu Salami and his friend, Sulaiman Akewusola, in a communal clash between Ilagbo and a neighbouring community, Oriyanrin.

2 months after the tragedies that shook his family and community, Segun had hardly recovered from the trauma when he was arraigned with 4 others for arson and the murder of his father and friend.

But that is not the crux of his story...

It would later emerge that Segun and his co-defendants, who spent 3 months in both police and prison custody were used as "replacements" for the actual suspects initially arrested for the crimes.

At the centre of these five men's woes was the man who heads the highest investigating arm of the Nigeria Police, the Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Abuja, Mr. Hycent Dagala.

According to court documents obtained by Punch, Segun Salami alongside his four cohorts, knew nothing about the crime they were accused of.

Yet, on the alleged orders of the DIG, they were charged before Magistrate Oshin of an Igbosere Magistrate's Court, Lagos on August 15 on six counts of murder, conspiracy and arson.

In the six-count charge, the police accused Segun, Samson Abimbola (49), Sikiru Egunjemi (52), Aliu Egunjemi (52) and Jimoh Ogunnupe (37) of arming themselves with "guns, cutlasses, axes, sticks and other dangerous weapons and unlawfully attacking and killing" Suleiman Akeusola, Musliu Salami, Seun Taofik and Shina Ipaye.

These were crimes the police accused them of committing on May 21 and 22, 2017.

By the time the facts of their case went before the Directorate of Public Prosecution in Lagos for advice, the DPP ordered their release immediately, noting that they had nothing whatsoever to do with the murders and arson they had been accused of.

That was not the only strange thing in the case of these men.

According to a petition by their lawyer, Mr. Sadiku Ibitayo, they were accused of crimes that were actually committed against them and their own people, while the suspects who committed the crimes were alleged ordered to be released by the DIG CIID.

Suspects released are Hammed Sanwo, Tosin Adenuga Muro Yusuf, Adebola Jabaru, and Muse Arashi.

But how did a communal clash involving youths in a Lagos neighbourhood get transferred to Force CIID, Abuja rather than being handled by the Lagos State Police Command?

The Punch decided to dig deeper into the matter, unearthing issues that eventually led to interests of some powerful people in choice landed property in the communities involved in the clash.

In a copy of the DPP advice dated September 25, 2017, obtained by Punch, the state's Director of Public Prosecution, T.K. Shitta-Bey, said, "After carefully considering the facts available in the case file, this office is of the considered opinion that there is no prima facie case of conspiracy, murder and arson" against Segun and his four co-defendants.

On the other hand, the DPP explained that there were "sufficient facts in the case to establish case of conspiracy to commit murder and contrary to sections 233 and 223 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State 2015 against Hammed Sanwo, Tosin Adenuga and Muro Yusuf for the murder of Sulaiman Akewusola and Adebola Alafa Jabaru, Muro Yusuf, Muse Arashi and Hammed Sanwo for the murder of Salami Musiliu respectively."

However, despite indicting the latter group for murder, the police have made no attempt to arrest them.

Communal festival turned killing spree
On May 24, 2017, residents of Ilagbo gathered in the town square for the annual Kilajolu Festival. The communal celebration also involves the residents of Oriyanrin, Otolu and Itamarun, who all gathered in Ilagbo that day.

But trouble started when a youth from Otolu was reportedly flogged with a cane laced with charms during the festival

The Punch was told that his manhood immediately became swollen.

Segun explained that he first noticed people running in panic around 3pm that day. "Before that day, youths from Otolu and Oriyanrin had problems which had nothing to do with Ilagbo.

"When the young man was flogged with the cane, we noticed that some youths were trying to foment trouble and we chased the boys we believed were responsible out of our community.

"But the youth that was flogged went back to Otolu to report to elders that he had been flogged with a fetish cane in Ilagbo. He did not know that he was flogged by Oriyanrin youths and the culprits had left."

A youth from Ilagbo was said to have told the Otolu elders that the culprits were from Oriyanrin.

Segun said that day, his uncle, who had come for a visit from Ijebu Ode was travelling back, he was ambushed by Oriyanrin youths where he was waiting for a commercial motorcycle. They accused him of pointing out an Oriyanrin boy as responsible for the flogging of the Otolu youth with the charmed cane.

Segun said, "They beat him and he managed to make a call that he was being beaten by Oriyanrin youths. I rushed to tell our community elders and they delegated two older men and four youths like me to go and settle the matter.

"We had barely entered the community by 10 metres when the youths came out en masse with weapons like axes, locally made guns, machetes and cudgels spiked with nails and attacked us.

"I sustained a cut in the head from the beating while a friend of mine sustained an injury in his hand. We were the lucky ones. Sulaiman Akewusola was cut with a machete in the belly and his intestines spilled out."

Segun said as soon as he noticed the extent of Akewusola's injuries, he immediately alerted the others so they could rush him to the hospital.

He alleged that despite trying to stop a vehicle to carry his friend to the hospital, the youths from Oriyanrin allegedly threw stones and sticks at any vehicle that made an attempt to stop.

But after many attempts, they eventually got a vehicle which took them to a nearby hospital but not until Akewusola had lost a lot of blood. He died in the hospital that night.

The news of his death spread like wild fire in Ilagbo where elders delegated Segun's 65-year-old father (Musiliu Salami) popularly called Matanle, to lead a team to bring Akewusola's body home.

Shortly after Matanle left, news got in that he had been dragged out of the vehicle his team was travelling in and beaten to death by Oriyanrin youths at the same bus stop where Segun and the others had been attacked.

He was said to have told the two men with him to escape as he was taken.

Ilagbo residents alleged that Oriyanrin youths probably believed Matanle was leading a reprisal and mounted their own counter-attack instead.

For hours, residents of Ilagbo could not summon the courage to go and retrieve his body until later in the night when they got news that Oriyanrin youths were attempting to bury him.

"We took a torch that night and took a different route to avoid an ambush to reach the seaside where we saw them already burying my father's body. When they saw us, they took to their heels leaving behind an axe and a cudgel that had nails on it. We quickly carried the body off to Ilagbo," Segun said.

The body would later be taken to the police station where the case was reported. An autopsy on the body showed that he was killed with a stick that had nails on it.

Arson and more deaths
While this was ongoing, there was an arson attack on Oriyanrin allegedly carried out by some youths from Otolu, who earlier had a problem with Oriyanrin youths.

In the arson, two Oriyanrin residents – Seun Taofeek and Maliki Amisere – were killed.

The DPP would later reveal that the arson was carried out by people that are now at large.

"There are sufficient facts to establish a case of conspiracy to commit a felony: to wit arson, and murder contrary to sections 411, 341 (a) and 223 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015 against Toheed Kasali, Odede Toheed, Folailu Ogunnupe, Oke Malole and others still at large," the DPP advised the court.

Following these incidents, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police at the time, Fatai Owoseni, had visited the warring communities, calling on their leaders to put an end to the communal clashes.

However, the police from the Akodo Police Division, arrested Hammed Sanwo, Adebola Alfa Jabaru, Tosin Adenuga, Muro Yusuf and Muse Arashi and four others for the murder of Matanle and Akewusola.

The DPP said, "Two eyewitness narrated how Alfa Jabar blocked the vehicle (of Musiliu Salami aka Matanle) with an SUV, dragged him from the car and beat him with a stick with nails on his head and he died at the scene."

However, those indicted for the arson and deaths of the two Oriyanrin residents were nowhere to be found.

The 9 suspects were transferred and detained at Department of Criminal Investigation, Panti, Lagos.

Arrest orders 'from above'
Few days to the arraignment of the suspects, two officers – Chike Nwabuwa (a Chief Superintendent of Police) and Daniel Attah (an Assistant Superintendent of Police) arrived Lagos, allegedly on the orders of the DIG Dagala and proceeded to Ilagbo to make arrests.

That was when Segun Salami, Samson Abimbola and Jimoh Ogunnupe were arrested.

Strangely, the men also arrested two men – Sikiru Egunjemi and Aliu Egunjemi – whose family are landowners in Oriyanrin.

Along with the initial nine suspects, they were all transferred to the Force CIID, a step the investigators at the DCI, Panti, found strange but had no authority to question.

Ogunnupe, a baker said he was surprised when the policemen came to his bakery alongside a local resident who pointed him out and he was bundled away.

"Before they took us to Abuja, they had accused me of using my vehicle to break a woman's leg. I found such accusation to be strange because I had nothing to do with the communal clash apart from the fact that the people who died were my people.

"I asked them to produce my accuser and all they showed me was her photographer."

The land connection
Two months before the communal clash, an investor, Mr. Peter Nwoseh, had bought three acres of choice seaside land in Oriyanrin from the Egunjemi family.

The day he started construction on the site, hoodlums reportedly came there to chase him away alongside Aliu and Sikiru Egunjemi – who are both secretary and head of the family.

Aliu and Sikiru were said to have petitioned the commissioner of police on this issue, while an investigation was opened on the matter.

According to their lawyer (Ibitoya), the same set of people who chased them away from the land were the ones suspected of killing Matanle.

Saturday PUNCH learnt that when the team from the DIG Dagala came to Lagos to transfer the suspects in the communal clash to Abuja, they also demanded the case file on the land.

"The policemen said Inspector General of Police was interested in the case. I wonder how the IG would be interested in a land matter in a small community in Lekki.

"Nwoseh, who bought the land had joined Aliu and Sikiru to petition the police. When the Abuja officers came to Lagos, they were invited and whisked away to Abuja where they were also locked up.

"It was when they got to Abuja that they realised it was not the IG that was interested in their case but the DIG in charge of CIID. It became clear that the land matter was deliberately combined with the communal clash case to achieve an end."

'The DIG told me to relinquish my land'

Nwoseh alleged that while in Abuja, he was brought before the DIG Dagala alongside the Egunjemis who sold the land to him.

According to him, also at the meeting was the Baale of Oriyanrin and one Prof. Elias alleged to be a friend of the DIG. The professor allegedly owned some plots of land beside the parcel Nwoseh bought.

He said, "They told me Prof. Elias has a few plots beside my own. There was a man who owned seven acres there too. He had been bullied to hand over his land.

"The land is a choice area because it is a seaside property. They said they would combine the seven acres with my three and those belonging to Elias and share everything equally. They wanted to move me from where I am. They said they would put me in the middle, put Elias on the seaside part and give the other man the other side. I just shook my head and walked out."

When the Egunjemis also shared their story, it became clear that if not for the DPP advice that secured their release, they would have languished in prison for murder they knew nothing about.

Sikiru told Punch that, "When we noticed the encroachment on the land we sold, we reported the matter at Panti. We noticed that some people had sold it off. The police invited those responsible and they did not come. Instead, they went straight to the DIG in Abuja. We got a call inviting us to Abuja and the day we went there, they put handcuffs on our hands.

"We saw one of the murder suspects arrested in the communal clash there. He then told CSP Nwanbuwa that I was a killer using a gun to kill members of his community. I told them I did not even live in the community.

"We were eventually brought before the DIG and he asked if we would agree to collect the money in instalment repayment from the people who illegally sold the land that we had sold to Nwoseh. But we told him we did not want that since we already sold our land and spent the money.

He said if we did not agree to the terms, we should be returned to the cell. We said we preferred to be locked up and go to court where we would clear the matter."

After a combined three months and two weeks in police cells in Lagos and at the Force CIID Abuja, they were brought back to the DCI, Panti in Lagos.

The nine actual murder suspects also detained at the Force CIID were allegedly ordered to be released by the DIG.

But to their shock, the Egunjemis were charged for murder alongside Segun (whose father is one of the murder victims) and Ogunnupe.

"We would have rotten in prison if not for the DPP advice that ensured our release," he said.

The DIG not my friend – Prof. Elias
Meanwhile, when our correspondent reached out to Prof Elias to get his own side of the story, he claimed he wouldn't remember the DIG, let alone connive with him to detain innocent people.

Elias also claimed he didn't take anybody's land.

"I didn't take anybody's land, not at all. There is nothing like that. All the lands I bought are in my name and I bought them a long time ago. I have the documents to prove that. If they have claim, they can try it in court.

"The case is all about members of a family fighting one another. They are just mentioning names of outsiders just like me. They should resolve their problems among themselves, I don't have anything to say beyond that.

"Which DIG? He is not my friend! He said there was some violence at the location and he invited everybody to come and say what they know. I had never seen him before that day, I am not even sure I can remember his name. I was doing some work in Abuja and I was invited, I didn't want to disrespect him or his office, so I had to go. The other members of the extended family were also invited," he said.
The Punch did not get a concrete response from the DIG when contacted on this story.

On Wednesday, Dagala said he could not recall the matter and requested for the section which handled the investigation so he could call for the case file.
One of our correspondents sent him the names of the investigating police officers – CSP Nwabuma and ASP Attah. He was also sent reminder SMSes on Thursday and Friday morning, but the DIG had yet to respond as of the time of filing this report.

When the Force Public Relations Officer, Jimoh Moshood, was contacted also, he promised to get in touch with the DIG but nothing was heard from him.

Over 200 UNILAG Law Students Barred From Writing Exam?

Posted: 14 Oct 2017 04:33 AM PDT

Over 200 university of Lagos law students were barred from writing the ongoing semester examination for allegedly failing to meet up to the compulsory 65% of their course attendance.

Reacting to the development, some of the affected students said the rule sprang upon them without any notice, adding that the University's enforcement of the rule was to reduce the number of students who get to the final year, and subsequently get admitted to the Nigerian Law School.

One of the students who spoke to SR on condition of anonymity said; "the university did this not because they so much care about students coming to class but because they needed to cut the number of students who go to law school. Normally, it is two hundred and seventy students (270) that get accepted into law school so they are trying to cut down the number of students before they get to the final year.

He opined that many students prefer to stay in their hostels to study as the capacity of their lecture hall cannot accommodate students if they all decided to be in class. The 400 level student said the faculty of law annex which has bigger capacity lecture halls does not have a public address system to amplify the voices of their lecturers when they teach.

Another student stated that out of over 300 in his class (400 level) which used to be up to 400 in the lower level several were advised to withdraw.

"If we combine the number of students who have been stopped from writing their examinations both in elective or compulsory courses, there would have over 200 students who have missed one exams or the other and that is just one class. Some students have not written a single exam since exams started."

He said lecturers too miss classes. "There were times I went for customary law classes that the lecturer was not around, about 5 times that happened in one semester. Sometimes we have over 200 students taking an elective course and the class would only accommodate 150 students which means some students would have to stand".

However, the dean of the faculty of law, Professor Atsenwa, said the 65% attendance rule is not new in the university, it is contained in students' handbook, adding that there also has been constant reminders to the students on the rule.

"I am surprised that a genuine student of the University of Lagos would say he is not aware of the rule, it is in their handbook and at the back of their docket. I am also surprised that any student would say they are not aware because the faculties reminded them. It is not a new rule and their attention was drawn to the rule," the dean said.

Meet Lady Who Makes Her Money As Phone Repairer

Posted: 14 Oct 2017 04:08 AM PDT

As shared by Nams...
I was at Robertson plaza along Avenue Road, Warri, to fix a phone and also to get an extra phone and this lady walked past me. She was truly a black beauty and I thought she may be one of those so called Naija slay queens on a voyage.
Moments later, I walked into another shop and lo and behold, I saw same lady bent over a phone in astute concentration, fixing the phone.

I was glad within me [to see another beautiful lady who's not selling her body for money]. This may be an ordinary feat but to me it's a wake up call that decent ladies are engaging in meaningful task."

Innocent Man Wrongly Convicted Freed After 23yrs In Prison

Posted: 14 Oct 2017 03:33 AM PDT

May God deliver His children from the 'issues' of life. Surrounded by news cameras and supporters, the man, Lamonte McIntyre, hugged his mother for the first time as a free man in 23 years.

The emotional reunion happened on Friday. The 41-year-old Kansas native was wrongly convicted of a double murder but he was finally set free after spending more than 23 years behind bars.

He was serving two life sentences. How did it happen?

The group Injustice Watch said McIntyre's first words were: "It's nice outside."

McIntyre was convicted at the age of 17 on the testimony of witnesses who later recanted. Prosecutors in the case presented no physical evidence or motive to tie him to the 1994 murders.

A judge was reconsidering the case in court hearings that were scheduled to last into next week, when the new prosecutor in the case said Friday in a news release that new information cast doubt on witness identification of McIntyre as the killer, and that a jury might have not convicted him.

"In light of information learned by my office since I began in January," Wyandotte County District Attorney Mark Dupree said, "my office is requesting the Court find that manifest injustice exists."

The original investigators of the daytime shooting never issued search warrants nor discovered a link between McIntyre and the victims, according to The Washington Post. He was arrested after less than 20 minutes of interviews.

"The investigation was hasty and superficial," said the Midwest Innocence Project, which helped free McIntyre.

According to AFP, McIntyre has always maintained his innocence.

His mother Rose McIntyre, who was present when he was arrested decades ago, on Friday thanked "everybody who never gave up on my son," according to the Kansas City Star, which reported that there were many tears in the courtroom when the man was finally freed.

"He (the judge) said, 'You're free.' I almost hit the floor," The Star quoted Rose McIntyre as saying.

"I want him to feel the sunlight."

These are what got me evicted from BBNaija - Soma | Mr Olumide's Blog

Posted: 14 Oct 2017 03:12 AM PDT

2017 BBNaija contestant, Somadina Anyama simply known as Soma, has opened up his time in the BBNaija house, music and more.

Read excerpts below:
We first met you on the Big Brother Naija (BBN) show. What was the audition like?
Unfortunately, I can't give full details of the audition but it was quite brain tasking.
How did you feel after you got kicked out of the show just two weeks after commencement?
I felt really disappointed in myself. I was really unhappy; I didn't expect to leave, to be one of the first people to leave. Honestly speaking, I saw myself winning the money.
What do you think you could have done to better your chances of winning?
When I got out of the house, a lot of people told me, 'Soma, we didn't start noticing you until the second week', and that was the week I left. When they say stuffs like that, I concur because in the first week, I was basically playing safe. I was just trying to be under the radar, making sure nobody really notices the guy, just been on my own. Now I feel that was my mistake, I would have brought myself out. If you noticed, the first week we had that party, I really didn't dance a bit. But the second week when we had the party, I was everywhere, which is actually how I am on a normal day. I think I played too safe.
Before BBN, what have you been doing career wise?
I moved to Lagos a couple of months before BBN. That was April last year. I was working as a graphics designer for Ariya Tickets and was doing music part-time, recording and performing at shows. The first show I did in Lagos was Ribbon & Roses at Eko Hotels; the show had Dede (Mabiaku) and Omawunmi. It was a big show.
Describe your kind of music
My genre of music is Afro fusion. I tend to fuse Afro into the sound that I'm making. It could be Afro reggae, Afro hip hop or Afro dance hall, but it must have that feel of Afro, that African feel. I don't make music for everybody; I make music for people that understand and appreciate music.
How do you think the BBN brand has helped your career?
I think Big Brother Naija has changed my life totally. There are no two ways about it, I can't sugarcoat anything or try to give myself some credits because this platform has really changed my life. It has really done a lot for me. I thank God for giving me that chance and grace to be on that platform. BBN changed my life totally; lots of things are working for me right now that wouldn't have worked for me on a normal day.
You play a character in Shuga season 6, how does the role relate to you?
It relates to me definitely. That's the reason why I can easily fit into the character because it is basically source of my life right now. So, I can relate to it easily.
How did you land the role?
I went for the open and closed auditions, so I don't know which of them got me in because there were better actors. I feel it's God's grace following me around since I got out of the BBN house. I was the first to leave but my case has been different, I've been getting lots of love. I feel God's grace is everywhere around me even if I'm doing things that I won't say are Christian like. But God's grace has been upon me and I can't shout.
In all of these, is your family supportive of your career?
I have the most supportive family ever. The thing is, my dad is a pastor in the Redeemed Christian Church of God, and he has been really supportive. My parents really understand. Mine is an entertainment family; my mum is a singer, I think she was one of the first African artistes to be signed onto Sony Music. That was about 30 years ago.
What's her name?
Her name is Stella Yama. My parents are very supportive; they understand the business. They are used to the business. My dad is used to the business because he has already done part of that with my mum. So, my family is supportive.
Do you feel their lifestyle influenced the roles you took on in the BBN House?
Of course, there are so many things I wouldn't do because I don't want to shame my family or drag their name in the mud. There were so many things I could have done but I couldn't because of my family and it has helped me a lot.
And this includes girls?
This includes so many things that young people do. Even in the House, I could have done more but then, I had to consider that my dad was watching. Even if he wasn't watching, there were church members that were watching, so I tried to put a leash on myself.
And this leash got you out of the House?
Yes! (Laughing). But I do have a cordial relationship with the rest of the housemates.

Police Hunts Father & Children For Killing A Man 2 Days To His Wedding

Imo State Police Command said investigators are now on the trail of a landlord and his five children who were accused of killing one of their tenants, Udochukwu Iwuoha, whose traditional wedding was slated for today (Saturday).

The victim was allegedly attacked by his landlord and children, on Thursday during a fight.

He said in a Facebook post, "This is how my little brother was killed for telling his landlord to move out his poultry from his room window because of the smell that the poultry generate in his room,

The landlord has been identified as Mr. Paul Oparaugo. Police say they will get him.

Posted: 14 Oct 2017 03:08 AM PDT

A 5yrs old boy, who has yet to be identified, has been rescued from Boko Haram insurgents by troops of the Nigerian Army, Operation Lafiya Dole, during a gun battle in Bama, Borno State.

While the battle lasted, three of the terrorists were shot dead, during which the troops, who were from the 202 Battalion, 21 Brigade, pulled the boy from the insurgents' grip.

It was gathered that the Boko Haram had enclaves in Abaram, Churuchuru and Aulajiri villages in the Bama area, which the troops attempted to clear as part of the ongoing Operation Deep Punch 2.

The boy is said to be with troops as efforts were on to locate his parents and reunite him with them.

Also, troops of 151 Battalion, 21 Brigade, reportedly encountered some Boko Haram terrorists while on patrol along the Bama- Bocobs Road. The troops were said to have engaged the terrorists in a fire fight and killed an undisclosed number.

The Director, Army Public Relations, Brig Gen. Sani Usman, confirmed the incidents.

Again? R*pe Suspect Escapes From Police Custody In Lagos

Posted: 14 Oct 2017 03:08 AM PDT

How did a suspect bolted from Surulere Police Station in Lagos? This is one mystery the State's police command is trying to solve.

The suspect, identified simply as Godswill allegedly r*ped one Iniobong Thompson in the Ojuelegba area of the state on September 22, 2017, a Friday.

Iniobong raised the alarm which led to the arrest of Godswill.

The girl is 17 and she arrived Lagos two months ago to live with one of her relations. The suspect was taken to Surulere Police Division tucked inside Area 'C' Police Command and was detained.

The case was subsequently transferred to the Gender Section of the state police command, Ikeja, but the suspect was rejected on health grounds.

Godswill was therefore taken by the police to Randle General Hospital for treatment. The suspect was brought back to the station in handcuffs and allegedly put behind the counter.

The complainants were shocked on October 4 during a visit to the station after they were told the suspect mysteriously escaped from custody.

According to what The Nation gathered, the policemen on duty slept off and negligently forgot to lock the suspect up inside a cell.

The complainants have since forwarded a petition to the Area 'C' Command, and the Commissioner of Police, Mr Imohmini Edgar, asking for punitive action against the policemen involved.

Responding, the spokesman of Lagos Police Command, Olarinde Famous-Cole, said the police are on the trail of the fleeing suspect, while the officers involved are currently facing disciplinary action.

I Won’t Be Happy If My Husband Marries Another Wife – Oluwo's Wife

Posted: 14 Oct 2017 02:33 AM PDT

Queen Chanel Chin, who is the wife of the Oluwo of Iwoland, Oba Abdulrasheed Akanbi, tells Punch's Femi Makinde in this chat that there's one romantic thing her husband did that she loves.

You are not a Nigerian, where were you born and how was growing up?
I was born in Toronto, Canada. That is where I was born and that is where I grew up. My growing up was lovely. It was great. I grew up in the midst of people from different backgrounds from all over the world. My father is a big reggae star. I love music and it was fun.

We learnt that you are a Jamaican, is that not correct?
I was not born in Jamaica. My mum is British and my dad is a Jamaican.

Do you love reggae music?
Yes. Reggae music is the best! I love Reggae Calypso; Afro Beat and a whole lot of others.

How do you feel being married to a monarch of a big town like Iwo?
I feel great. It is a dream come true. We are happy and our family is complete. I am opening a new chapter of my life and I find it interesting. It is a new experience and I am learning every day, I learn new things about life and I am a mother. I learn new ways to be patient and to be kind. It is indeed a new chapter of my life and I am enjoying it.

A dream come true? Were you dreaming of getting married to an Oba?
Not really. But when I was much younger, I dreamt of coming to Africa and I am here in Africa now, so, it is a dream come true. I read about Africa, about great things like Egyptian civilisation, Cleopatra, Queen of Sheba, Ethiopia and other interesting places in Africa. I knew one day I would come to Africa but I didn't know when or how it would happen.

How do you feel wearing a crown since other queens around here don't wear crowns?
I feel great wearing a crown because it brings awareness to our history. Our great progenitor, Oduduwa, and his wife, Olokun wore their crowns. So, it is not a strange thing that I wear a crown. Oduduwa crowned his queen. Oduduwa's wife sculpture in Ife is there and there is a crown on her head. Oduduwa came from the East and all of their queens there wore crowns in the old time. Cleopatra wore crown and Oduduwa's wife, Olokun, was the first to wear a crown. So, I feel very honoured to bring that back. There is nothing new or strange about it but it is just a way of bringing back our history. People don't need to look at it as a strange thing. But they should just ask, was the wife of Oduduwa crowned by Oduduwa? If she was crowned by Oduduwa then, why don't the present day kings allow their queens to wear crowns? If Oduduwa crowned his queen, then there is nothing wrong if the queens of today also wear crown like I do.

There are historical facts as well as archaeological findings that confirm this. These ancient queens, who wore crowns were not regents but queens and Oduduwa's queen did. This is confirmed at the Ife Museum by the professor there. There is an archaeological finding that confirms this at Ife Museum. The picture of this archaeological evidence was presented to Kabiyesi by Prof. Ogunfowokan and it is in our palace. I will give you the photograph to confirm this. Oluwo is doing this to underscore the important position of women and I think he should be supported. This will give opportunity to women, that women should be given their due recognition. If our progenitor could crown his queen, why are we stopping queens from wearing crown now?

Do you share the same set of crowns with Kabiyesi or do you have your separate crowns?
I have my separate set of crowns. I don't wear his crowns. We don't share crowns. We don't have the same size of head, the shapes are also slightly different. But I can't wear the ancient crown. That one is meant for Kabiyesi alone. I wear the modern crowns but I cannot wear the ancient crown, that one is exclusive to him.

How will you react if Kabiyesi marries another wife?
Hummmm. It is the culture here and there is nothing I can do. Although I won't be happy, I don't think he wants to marry another wife. I will accept it because it is part of the culture here. Although it is part of the culture here but things are changing. Polygamy is giving way to monogamy in this modern time and I think it is a good one.

Are you the first wife?
Yes. There is no other wife.

Has your status as the queen changed your fashion sense?
Definitely. As the queen, you have to be conservative, you have to dress in a way that will portray you are a decent woman. Moderation should be seen in everything you do including the way you dress and I love it. You have to be a role model to many, especially the younger women in the town and even to the older women because of the position you occupy. There are things you must not be seen wearing. I cannot wear bikini and things like that.

Do you miss the way you used to dress before the change of status?
Not necessarily because I am in a new chapter of my life now. I am a wife and a mother. I don't want to dress the way I used to dress when I was younger. I want to reflect my status as the queen in the way I dress so I should no longer be thinking of the way I used to dress before I got married to Kabiyesi. I am a leader and I must be seen like that.

How do you relax now?
When I want to relax, at times I read. I read documentaries; I read documentaries about King Solomon. I like to light scented candles. But there are lots of activities at the palace here on a daily basis, so there is no time to relax all the time. I seldom have time for relaxation. There is free feeding of the indigent ones, the Iwo/Osogbo Road and the Iwo/Ibadan Road were fixed by Kabiyesi and we are always very busy. There are a lot of things to do here.

Do you still go to see movies?
No. We don't have time to do that because there are lots of programmes here. Sometimes at night, we watch African Magic on television before bed time. I'm a new mother and at times, we watch TV together with Kabiyesi at home.

Did you have any link with the Yoruba race before you got married to Kabiyesi?
I had Yoruba friends in Canada before I came to Yoruba land and I listened to a lot of Yoruba music and watched Yoruba movies. Things were not difficult for me when I came here because I was already exposed to Yoruba culture even when I was in Canada.

Who is your favourite Nigerian artiste?
They are many. I like P-Square. I really like Davido, Olamide, 2face and others.

Do you dance to African traditional music?
Yes. I listen to K-1, I like Sunny Ade.

I mean traditional drums the drummers beat at the palace. Do you like it?
Yes, we have them at the palace. I like talking drums and other drums. When we go out, they beat the drums, when we come back, they do the same. I am learning to recognise them and to understand what they mean. The drums wake us up in the morning and it is interesting.

Do you miss Canada?
Of course I miss Canada because I was born and raised there but this is my new home now and I am finding it very interesting. I am satisfied and I am happy being here.

Is your status preventing you from being free the way you would have wanted to be?
You know when you are Olori, it is different life. There are people with me almost all the time. And of course, I am a mother and a wife so, I can't be free the way I used to be free when I was single. Now I'm a leader to the women in the town. There is not much wakawaka that I want to be doing. This is a new chapter of my life.

Has motherhood changed the way you dress?
Of course. That is, again, being a mother, I am a wife and a leader to the womenfolk in the town and I have to dress like a queen. I want to be respected and appear in a dignifying manner, so I had to change the way I dress to reflect my position.

Is the Kabiyesi romantic?
That is our private affair and I don't want to share that with anybody. But what Kabiyesi did that is romantic is that he said I am the most beautiful queen all over the whole planet. It was very controversial but it is very romantic.

Businessman Attempts Suicide Over N27Million Debt

Posted: 14 Oct 2017 02:33 AM PDT

There was pandemonium in Rumuagholu community in Obio/Akpor area of Rivers State following a report that a middle-aged man had allegedly attempted to commit suicide over N27m debt.

The man, Mishack Okonye, who is the Managing Director of CMIK High Global Service, was said to have incurred the huge debt, which he had been battling to offset.

Okonye had allegedly worked for a firm, Bua International Limited in Port Harcourt. It was further learnt that Bua still owed CMIK over N27 million and Okonye had sold most of his property in order to pay for the machineries and labours he hired for the project.

Mrs. Millicent, Okonye's wife, who narrated how her husband had attempted to commit suicide over the debt, noted that God's intervention saved him.

Millicent disclosed in Port Harcourt that she met her husband, Okonye, trying to take a concoction in order to terminate his life.

She narrated that the cause of her husband's attitude was the debt burden on him, adding that several persons have been coming to demand that he pay them the money he owed them.

Millicent explained that those her husband also borrowed money from to execute the project had been threatening him for over two years now.

She said her husband did a job for one Bua International Limited, recalling that over N27,750,000 was still not being paid, resulting to her husband being indebted to many persons.

The woman noted that her husband had sold off most of his property in order to clear the debt because the company he worked for refused to pay.

She called on the government agencies, well-meaning individuals to prevail on the Bua International to pay her husband so that he could pay of the debts her incurred in the project.

Woman who accused Nelly of rape says she wants to drop the case | Mr Olumide's Blog

Posted: 14 Oct 2017 02:27 AM PDT

College student who accused rapper Nelly of raping her wants the case dropped.

According to her lawyer Karen Khoeler, the young lady feels the system has failed her and Nelly being a celebrity, things will definitely not be in her favour.

In a letter dated Friday, the woman's attorney said she regretted her actions and should not have called the police or 911 to report the alleged rape.

Koehler said:

"Who will believe her. People are saying horrible things already. She cannot handle this. She is about to break."

In the letter, Koehler started by saying:

We do not live in a society where a 21-year-old college student can feel safe enough to pursue criminal charges against a celebrity for an alleged rape," Koehler wrote.

Koehler described what happened to the woman after she called 911: She was interviewed and detained, then taken to a hospital for a rape kit. When she returned home, she was "besieged" by text messages and news articles detailing the incident, Koehler said, then she was called by a reporter.

"As she cries alone in her apartment with mounting hysteria, she will learn that the celebrity and his lawyer are issuing public statements that her 'allegation is devoid of credibility and is motivated by greed and vindictiveness.' That her agenda is 'money, fame and notoriety,'" Koehler said.

The letter read:

Nelly's lawyer, Scott Rosenblum speaking about the development said the lady asked that the case be dropped when she investigation exposed her lies for what they were- a pure fabrication.

A fabrication that has caused Nelly and his family to suffer emotionally and financially."

Lagos Police reacts to CCTV footage of Tagbo's last moments released by Davido

Posted: 14 Oct 2017 02:08 AM PDT

There have been twists concerning the death of Tagbo who is a friend of pop star, Davido and lover of a divorcee Nollywood actress, Caroline Danjuma. The latest in the saga is the release of a CCTV footage by Davido's camp that showed a staggering Tagbo intoxicated, leaving the Shisha Room.

With the release of that video, how is Lagos Police command handling the case?

In an exclusive chat with Saturday Beats, Damilola Usman, said to be a family friend of the deceased, stated that the police investigation would not be based on the viral video released by Davido's camp.

He explained that the police have since seen that footage but they also have in their custody, a CCTV footage which showed the way Tagbo was dumped in the hospital. Usman claims that he watched the CCTV obtained from the hospital and he recognised someone in the footage.

Usman said, "Few days ago, I was told that during Davido's visit to the police station, he brought the guys who dumped Tagbo's body at the general hospital to the police station. The same guys that they saw in the CCTV were the ones that were brought to the police station. The CCTV in the hospital showed the guys that dropped him and the way he was dropped at the hospital.

"From my observation, the police investigation would not be based on the CCTV from the Shisha Room where they went to drink. Davido is only trying to defend himself by releasing the CCTV video footage of the Shisha Room because the police already have that footage and they had seen it before Davido's camp released the video. I believe they are going to base their investigation on the hospital's CCTV.

"The question that Davido has been asked is why he asked people to drop Tagbo at the hospital and he is denying the claims. They are asking Davido that why his escorts would leave him to go and drop Tagbo's body in the hospital. He is showing us the Shisha Room CCTV which revealed that the guy was drunk. We are all aware that he was drunk, but how did they treat him after realising that he was drunk? That is the question that he is being asked but he is trying to evade it.

"I saw the CCTV footage at the police station and he knows the guys that went to drop him at the hospital. They are his boys; one of them was wearing a red fez cap and an Adidas clothing head to toe. The guys that went to drop him are Davido's friend. I saw one of the guys at the Shisha Room on that fateful day and later that night, I also saw him at the Elegushi Beach but I don't know when they went to drop him at the hospital. The police already have all the evidence they need and they are investigating the matter.

"The footage that was released which showed that Tagbo was high at the Shisha Room is not the issue; the question is what happened after."

He told Saturday Beats that the deceased who is the first son of the family lost his father about five years ago and his mother is currently battling stroke.

Police say available CCTV footage are in their custody and they are analyzing the events carefully.
