Covenant University Shaves Students' Hair... people react

Posted: 05 Apr 2018 12:49 AM PDT

Some ex-students at Covenant University, Ota, Ogun State, have criticised the institution for shaving the bushy hair of its male students.

Some alumni, as well as some Nigerians, took to social media to call out the school following a viral video that captured students seated in a hall as a man used a hair clipper to pluck hair off the middle of their heads under the supervision of some staff members.

The school was also criticised for allegedly using a single unsterilised hair clipper on all the students on the grounds that they might contract diseases in the process.

An alumnus, Okoli Offorbuike, said the action was disdainful and undermined the cliché "Kings and Queens" used for students at the university.

In one of his posts on Facebook on the matter, Offorbuike posted the pictures of the General Overseers of the Living Faith Church, Bishop David Oyedepo, and the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Worldwide, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, where the former wore Afro and the other kept hair.

He called on the university alumni to facilitate the inclusion of a law in the students' handbook that would accord the students honour, dignity and respect.

He wrote, "After seeing this act carried out in my Alma Mater, I began to ask myself that maybe calling students kings and queens in Covenant University is just a mere cliché. The Bible says faith without work is dead. I will say Covenant University, without respect for the dignity of students, is no different from other universities.

"Where did the student affairs get the idea of shaving students' hair off? This is one (Adeboye) of the leading fathers of faith in Africa, yet he keeps his hair…he is a king and heavily anointed and everyone agrees to that.

"This is one of Bishop Oyedepo's full-fledged mentors, T.L. Osborn, on full-fledged Afro. He was still a king and a great preacher. Could we call him unkempt? How less bushy is Bishop Oyedepo's hair in these pictures and was he less a king? If none could shave off his hair disgracefully, then why should it be done to students in his school? This is injustice."

One Matthias Hungbo, who also claimed to be an alumnus, said there was nothing wrong with the students' hair.

He said the shaving was in reaction to some students' failure to take their Bibles for a service held the previous day.

"It's appalling that people say keep to the rules and regulations, but in all honesty, there's no rule as to what height of hair should be kept. It just says keep a low cut and the boys always keep their hair well. The management is just passing on its anger as a result of the embarrassment it faced in FT the previous day since some students didn't bring Bibles. It is sad and even more sad because I feel nothing will be done about it," he wrote on his Facebook wall.

A woman, who claimed to have studied Mass Communication at the school, Chimdimma Christiana, said some of its rules and regulations did not justify the vision of the school.

Another ex-student, Daniel Uzor, posted on Facebook that although he was proud of being a graduate of the university, he was disappointed at the shaving of the students' hair.

"I don't see how keeping of hair affects religious values or academic performance. No one is saying you shouldn't uphold your values, but please, at least, accord people respect and dignity," he added.

One Mo'Miss @Modupeee also tweeted that shaving people's hair without their consent was an assault.

A Facebook user, Chidiebere Elendu, said the university's management should be cautioned by the relevant authorities, noting that the school did not factor in health implications of using an "unsterilised" clipper for all the affected students.

He said, "What excuse will the school authorities give should these students contract some transmittable diseases from the barbing exercise? Sometimes, I can't stop wondering if the same Christianity being practised today was the same as the one Christ and the apostles preached."

However, some people defended the school's action, saying the students were to blame for not complying with the rules and regulations.

One of them, Yaks, @Yaksnagu, said the students had no reason to complain as they were aware of the school's rules.

He said, "A person should not be heard complaining about an injury to him dealt by another person, where that person volunteered himself to the risk of harm and knew that the injury dealt was a likely consequence of their dealings."

One Kanye Waste, @iKantWaste, in his tweet, also defended the school, saying its action had nothing to do with Christianity.

"Those are their rules and regulations, and it is not by force to attend the institution," he added.

Efforts to get the reaction of the school proved abortive as an official, Emmanuel Igban, who used to speak for the institution, said he was not in the position to comment on it.

He, however, promised to send the contact of the spokesperson to The Punch but had yet to do so as of press time.

Woman Killed, Baby Abducted During Outing With A Friend

Posted: 05 Apr 2018 12:49 AM PDT

Some suspected child traffickers have absconded with a six-month-old baby after allegedly strangling her mother, Helen Ehianu, at Obior community, in the Aniocha North Local Government Area of Delta State.

It was gathered that the 28-year-old woman, who had been missing since March 22, 2018, was found dead in a pit on March 24.

The assailants were alleged to have absconded with her baby.

The Punch gathered that not only was the victim strangled, her legs were also broken.

Residents, who reportedly sighted one of the assailants dumping the body in the pit, raised the alarm.

It was learnt that before youths in the community and the police could arrive in the scene, the suspect had fled.

The immediate elder brother of the deceased, Samuel Ehianu, alleged that the victim's friend, identified only as Precious, had a hand in her death.

He said Helen and Precious left the family compound in Ekwuoma, in the Ika North East council area for Ogwashi-Uku on March 22.

According to Samuel, the friend said she was taking her to where she could be cured of epilepsy, a health condition she (Helen) had been battling for years.

He said, "On March 22, 2018, my sister's friend came to take her to Ogwashi-Uku where she claimed that she could be cured of epilepsy. We don't know the lady, but my sister said she knew her somewhere and that was the second time that they would be going to the place together. When they wanted to leave, Precious insisted that my sister should go with her six-month-old baby girl. My sister refused, but after some pressure, she yielded.

"After a while, my mother called them on the telephone. They promised to return in the evening. My mother waited till evening and when she did not hear from them, she called again.

"When the lady picked the call, she told my mother that my sister said she was not returning home because she wanted to start a trade there. Later on, we called, but Precious did not pick the call. Up till this moment, we have not heard from her.

"It was while we were searching for my sister that we learnt that a corpse was found at Obior. When we got there, we found my sister's corpse in a pit. She was strangled and her corpse thrown into a pit. The police took her remains to a morgue at Issele-Uku."

Samuel noted that residents of the area where the corpse was found claimed that they heard a "strange sound" from the apartment of a man they suspected had a hand in her death.

He explained that the suspect fled the community after the incident.

"We are suspecting that the lady and the man connived to abduct the baby and that was why they lured my sister to the place. We can't find her baby. We can't also find the friend and her telephone line has not been reachable.

"We want justice for my sister. We want the two suspects arrested and brought to book. There is evidence that she was strangled; she did not die from epilepsy. There were several marks on her throat and her legs were broken," Samuel added.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Andrew Aniamaka, confirmed the incident, adding that the case had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department.

He said, "The case was reported at the Isselle-Uku Police Division from where it was transferred to the SCIID. The matter is being investigated."

Notorious Herdsmen Kill Husband, Wife and Their Two Kids

Posted: 05 Apr 2018 12:14 AM PDT

Four members of a family were on Wednesday massacred in Taraba state by the rampaging herdsmen.

A 9-month old toddler, however, survived the attack.

Police Commissioner, David Akinremi, who confirmed the attack and killings, said, the incident took place in Bikka village of Takum local government area, the home of Governor Darius Ishaku and former Defence Minister Theophilus Danjuma.

The killing comes 11 days after Danjuma indicted the armed forces of "colluding" with the killers, asking Nigerians to arm themselves and balance the terror, otherwise they will all die one by one.

The pictures of those murdered - a Kuteb-Jukun man and his wife with two of their kids, which went viral on the social media, looked gory, with multiple machete cuts.

Taraba state police commissioner described the killers as "unknown gunmen."

"There is no confirmation yet, as to who they (the killers) are, and their motive.

"But no item seen to be stolen," he told The Nation, adding that the killers struck at 1:00am.

Hon. Shiban Tikare, the Chairman of Takum local government council, also confirmed the killing of the four members of a family in a night attack.

Shiban disclosed that a nine-month old baby, however, "mysterious" survived the attack.

"The attackers invaded the village at night and slaughtered four members of a family who were deep asleep.

"We heard gunshots around 1:00am along Takum-Ussa road. While we were making efforts to mobilise policemen to the area, we heard sporadic gunshots at Mbikka Central, a community just at the outskirt of the town.

"By the time we got there, four people were slaughtered like chickens – a man, his wife and two children.

"A baby mysteriously survived the attack. The attackers whom we suspect to be Fulani herdsmen also attacked Basam, a village close to Rtd. Gen. Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma's farmhouse, setting the entire village ablaze," he said.

Shiban lamented that the killings were going on in the area, in spite of the extension of Exercise Ayem A Kpatuma (Cat Race) by the federal government.

According to him, instead of combing the villages to flush out the attackers, the army was busy brutalising his people in the town, adding that his people were disappointed with the exercise which he said was not yielding the desired results.

Police spokesman, David Misal, an ASP, said the casualty figure was still not clear, "but four bodies were recovered."

Misal said the Divisional Police Officer in Takum and some troops were drafted to the area.
