This is sad! See more photos from the scene...   Firefighters started to contain the blazes earlier in the week before gusts of 20 to 40mph winds and extremely dry conditions joined forces on Wednesday, threatening to spread the flames even further. | EFCC is a senseless body - Fayose | Mr Olumide's Blog Posted: 13 Oct 2017 04:12 AM PDT  The Ekiti state governor made this known at a reception held in honour of two of the state officials who were recently arrested and then released from EFCC custody. "By the grace of God, I will restructure the EFCC when I become the president of this nation. I will reorganize EFCC and make it look responsible. They detained me in 2008, but I won them in court because the most high God was on my side. EFCC is a senseless body, because if they are not senseless, it should have known that the man who wrote the petition had been sacked because he didn't deserve to be called a civil servant. The arrest of my officials was orchestrated by Ekiti indigenes in collaboration with the EFCC. I will never go and beg EFCC, it will rather beg me. I won't negotiate anything because I am not afraid of them. The lecture had the title, 'Building a culture of academic excellence in Nigerian universities.' At the event, the former minister called on Government to review beneficiaries of TETFUND, saying that exclusion of private tertiary institutions in its disbursement was not ideal. He said, "I don't believe in the notion that this country will break up. Nigeria will never break up. This is an idea of God and he will uphold the country. Nigeria is one of the most powerful countries of the world, that's why the devil is fighting us. All we need is sustainable policies and leadership that will lead the country aright and I see God bringing that about soon in the country. "There are many Nigerians who are passionate and believe in the country. There are many experts that the country is blessed with and they will soon take charge of the country." Gana said that the efforts of stakeholders to address the problems of the People Democratic Party and reconcile those who were aggrieved was a good thing for Nigeria, adding that the party was capable of solving some of the nation's problems. | Nigerians Can Now Access Loan With Academic Certificates – Says CBN Posted: 13 Oct 2017 03:58 AM PDT  CBN disclosed this yesterday through its Director of Development Finances, Dr. Mudashiru Olaitan, at the 3rd All Civil Society National Economic Summit, organised by a Coalition of Civil Societies. According to him, young entrepreneurs can also access bank loans using their jewelleries and other moveable assets as collateral, under the National Collateral Registry policy of the Bank. "The CBN has introduced a number of initiatives aimed at encouraging the youths to engage in entrepreneurial activities that will create employment and boost economic growth. "Young entrepreneurs can now borrow up to N3million with their academic certificates as collateral. | Prison officers seek Comptroller-General’s suspension | Mr Olumide's Blog Posted: 13 Oct 2017 03:42 AM PDT  They urged President Muhammadu Buhari to order an immediate probe of Jafaru's administration.The Nation reports that,the officials, who described themselves as "Aggrieved Prison Officers", accused Comptroller-General of Prisons of diversion of funds to fixed deposit accounts, alteration of age and staff recruitment that did not follow due process. The officers alleged that workers' salaries became irregular after he allegedly moved funds into a fixed deposit account. Jafaru was also accused of directing that part of staff salaries be paid through Nigerian Prison Micro-Finance Bank, which they said has offices only in Kaduna, Enugu and Ibadan. The directive, according to them, meant prison workers had to travel long distances at huge risks to get their salaries. The officers also accused the Comptroller-General of recruiting 2,000 warders without following due process, adding that there were plans to recruit 6,000 more. "If he is not immediately called to order, it is the same process that he used for the illegal recruitment in 2015 that he will use again for the proposed recruitment," they said. According to them, efforts to get the Interior Minister to call Jafaru to order failed as "the minister gave us cold shoulders". They asked the Comptroller-General to release the staff nominal roll detailing senior officers' positions and offices. They claimed that in one nominal roll, Jafaru's date of birth is stated as July 21, 1957, but in another nominal roll, it is July 21, 1959. The officers also alleged there is high mortality rate in the prisons due what they described as sharp practices on award of "ration and gas contracts" and project executions. | Landlord and his children stabs tenant to death | Mr Olumide's Blog Posted: 13 Oct 2017 02:57 AM PDT  According to report, the tragic incident occurred at No. 50 Onumonu Street in the state capital between 9pm and 10p. The landlord Paul Oparaugo, and five of his kids stabbed the man, Udochukwu Iwuoha, to death on Wednesday. Iwuoha, who was to be married on Friday (today), according to neighbours was stabbed until he died before the landlord and his kids vandalized his property. The deceased's neighbour said; "The incident happened on Wednesday. Udochukwu had told Paul Nwachukwu, who is a security guard at a branch of Guaranty Trust Bank, to stop rearing chickens behind his apartment. Friend of the deceased said: "He had complained that his landlord was always on his case." Another neighbour, who identified himself simply as John: "The hospitals demanded a police report because the injuries were too much. Before we could get the report, he died. State's Commissioner of Police, Chris Ezike, confirmed the incident, and said that the case has been transferred to the homicide section of the Criminal and Investigation and Intelligence Department of the state police command. Ezike said, "It is a case of a family feud. Some youths in the area wanted to take the law into their own hands, but we were able to calm the situation. Her partner was sentenced to 30 years in jail. The mother, 43, had claimed that the boy, identified only as Joseph, died after tripping over a rope tied to the family dogs. She told police the boy "just pushed my buttons too many times" and "I had so many thoughts about killing Joey." "Don't get me wrong I did love that boy, but there was a part of me that hated him because he looked like his father and that he's his father's child,'' she said, according to records heard by the court. According to Punch, Asmau ran to a certain John's house. John, is a guard in Igbo Elerin, in the Agbara area of Ogun State and has now been picked up by the police for allegedly abducting her. John was apprehended along with a cobbler, Moses, who lives on Opic Estate, Agbara. . . The cobbler is the one who worked longside John to have Admau stay in his house. The cobbler according to reports, told Asmau's guardians he had helped her fix her sandal and she looked to be in a hurry to leave as he helped fix her shoe. Records of the school also indicated that she was absent on that day. The case was reported at the Agbara Police Division. It was, however, said the girl was found in Oko Afo, Badagry, last Saturday by a family friend of the guardians. . . | British man swallows 6-inch fish | Mr Olumide's Blog Posted: 13 Oct 2017 02:57 AM PDT  The man, 28, who was not named, went into cardiac arrest on Oct. 5 after the fish leapt into his mouth, completely blocking his throat. However, paramedics were able to clear his airway after drawing the sole free with a forceps. They saved his life. According to USA Today, Matt Harrison, an emergency responder for the South Western Ambulance Service, said he was on the scene in less than two minutes. When he arrived on the dimly-lit pier where the man was fishing, a friend of the casualty was already performing CPR. The man's friend, also not named, told Harrison he had jokingly placed a fish he had just caught over his mouth. The sole then wriggled free and jumped into the patient's throat, causing a complete obstruction. As the patient's heart had already stopped, paramedics continued CPR. He was then artificially ventilated with a bag and mask, but his airway remained blocked and he wasn't receiving any oxygen. The man began to deteriorate. Harrison said : "It was clear that we needed to get the fish out or this patient was not going to survive the short journey to the Royal Bournemouth Hospital. After six attempts, the fish finally came out in one piece. To paramedic's amazement, it was a whole Dover sole, measuring about 6 inches. | Lagos Resident Leads Gang To Rob & Kill His Neighbour Posted: 13 Oct 2017 02:33 AM PDT  Two members of the gang, Tobi Michael, 22, and 19-year-old Adigun Gbolahan, had been arrested. Two single-barrelled guns and charms were reportedly recovered from them. According to Punch, apart from Ayobo, the gang terrorised Ijanikin and Igando areas of the state. The duo owned up to the crime when they were paraded on Wednesday at the Lagos Police Command headquarters in Ikeja. Michael, an indigene of Ilesa, Osun State, said he went into robbery last year after he completed his apprenticeship in furniture making. He said he bought the gun he used for operation from one Awala in Alaba Rago for N15,000. He said, "A friend called Bigi introduced me to robbery after I finished learning furniture making. I made between N30,000 and N50,000 from each operation. I had participated in about 20 operations. "In July 2017, Chinedu led us to his neighbour in Ayobo. When we got there, he stayed outside, while Adigun (Gbolahan) and I entered. When we asked the man to give us money and his mobile phones, he brought out a cutlass and hit me on the head. I got angry and shot him dead. I was drinking at a joint in Alaba Rago when Bigi led policemen to arrest me." Michael added that the charms were meant to ensure successful operations and create fear in the minds of victims. His accomplice, Gbolahan, who hails from Ibadan, Oyo State, said he used to work with another gang, but was invited to the Ayobo operation by Michael. He said, "I live in a ghetto in Alaba Rago. I just completed training in tailoring and I needed money for graduation. We were three in my gang. Two of them had been arrested and they are in Kirikiri prison. "I followed Tobi (Michael) and gang members to Ayobo, but I did not carry a gun." | IGP Idris Sues Saraki, Senate Over Investigation For Alleged N120bn Bribe Posted: 13 Oct 2017 02:33 AM PDT  The Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris has filed a suit before the High Court of the FCT, Abuja, seeking an order restraining the Senate and Senate President Bukola Saraki from going ahead with their plan to investigate allegations of malpractices against him. The lawmaker representing Bauchi Central, Isah Misau, of the APC, had alleged, among others, that the IG collected about N10bn monthly from some firms and highly-placed Nigerians for security. Misau, a former police officer before being elected to Senate, also accused Idris of granting fraudulent promotions to undeserving police operatives. Misau, who is the Chairman, Senate Committee on Navy, had accused Idris of extorting money, ranging from N10m to N15m, from Commissioners of Police, State Mobile Commanders and Special Protection Units Commanders, for favourable postings. He had argued that the level of corruption being perpetrated by IGP Idris was so alarming and capable of undermining the anti-corruption stance of President Buhari. The IG had denied these allegations while the Force Headquarters had accused Misau of leaving the force with forged retirement papers. IGP Idris had alleged that Misau was a deserter. Faulting the committee set up by Saraki to investigate him, IGP Idris is seeking, "A declaration that the committee set up by the Senate to investigate the allegations against Ibrahim Idris is unconstitutional, null and void. "A declaration that the sitting and other conduct of such constituted committee to investigate the allegations against Mr. Idris are unconstitutional, null and void. "An order restraining the Senate Committee howsoever designated from sitting, inviting Mr. Ibrahim Idris, hearing or taking a decision, against the current Inspector-General of Police, pending the determination of this suit.
