Meet Woman Who Drives A 'Keke' In Lagos After Graduating From University

Posted: 08 Mar 2018 03:05 AM PST

This is Stella Adele, a strong and self-sufficient woman who is trying really hard to fend for her family.

The woman who graduated with a second class upper degree from the Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago Iwoye, Ogun State, is now a tricycle 'Keke' driver in Lagos.

In a nation where jobs like driving is peculiar to men, Stella is proving to be an exception to the rule.

Reports show that she competes favorably with her male colleagues despite the society's unwritten law that being a driver is not a woman's job.

In a video made about her, the woman revealed that she used to have a job but it didn't really give her enough time to take care of her family, so she opted for a job that will give her a flexible time.

Adele delved into the tricycle business upon the advice of a police friend who told her how lucrative the business is.

With the support of her brother and a loan from the bank, she was able to start her own 'keke' business and she does it proudly with every bit of happiness.

She said she makes an average of N8,000 to N12,000 everyday and nothing less than N7,000 on days she resumes late due to some other engagements.

Adele plans to buy a bus in the nearest future with proceeds from her business.

Some of Adele's colleagues commended her, stating that she is very hardworking and willing to succeed.

How This Man Was Mistakenly Given A Brain Surgery After Mix-Up At Hospital

Posted: 08 Mar 2018 02:35 AM PST

In an exclusive interview with Kenya's The Nation, two patients – John Mbugua Nderitu, 38, and Samwel Kimani Wachira, 37, – who were involved in a mix-up that resulted in Samwel Kimani Wachira mistakenly getting a brain surgery, have spoken.

The two men were discharged on Wednesday around 4pm. The incident happened at the Kenyatta National Hospital. Many of the hospital officials involved in the mix-up have been disciplined.

"Except for intermittent headaches, I am doing well," said Mr Mbugua who left the facility in the company of his three sisters assured, while Mr Kimani who was in the company of his older brother and lawyer said: "Mimi niko sawa sasa (I am well now)."

In a new report by Nairobi News, the two men were taken to KNH on the same day, February 19. Whereas Mr Kimani does not remember how he got to the hospital, Mr Mbugua was taken to the referral facility by his sister, mother and his brother-in-law.

This is after one of his sisters, Pauline Njeri Nderitu received a call from a Good Samaritan that his brother had been taken to a nearby clinic following a hit and run accident involving a motorcycle in Kahawa West.

"The Good Samaritan called and described Mbugua to me. I was convinced that was my brother and I immediately organised for how he would be taken to another hospital," recounts Ms Nderitu.

The first hospital that the 38-year-old man was taken to was St Francis Community Hospital in Kasarani where upon doing a CT scan (computed tomography scan), the medics recommended that the family transfers him to KNH as they lacked a neurosurgeon.

Mr Mbugua and his family went to KNH on the same day, February 18, but only got an admission on Monday, the 19th.

"We had a patient card at 11.59pm following a day of hassling," added Ms Nderitu.

At KNH, the doctor who reviewed Mbugua recommended a surgery called craniotomy, as he explained to the family that Mbugua had some bleeding on the front pant of his head and that the blood was clotting hence the need to clear the blood.

Ms Nderitu went on to say: "Upon listening to the doctor, we agreed to sign the consent to take him to theatre. But as we waited, a nurse led us to the general surgery ward where we were later sent back to the theatre downstairs and left Mbugua at the entrance of the operating theatre. The doctor even told us that the procedure would take about four hours."

Meanwhile, the family of Samuel Kimani, who was taken to KNH by a Good Samaritan on the same day Mr Mbugua was wheeled in, want to know who signed the consent form that saw their 37-year-old brother's head opened up in the surgery mix-up.

For days, the family told the Nation, they had not been told details of Kimani's unexpected head surgery.

"The doctors did not even tell us that Kimani had had a head operation. After four days of searching in police stations and nearby health facilities, I received a call from a social worker at KNH that Kimani was there," said Amos Wachira.

By the time Wachira was seeing his brother, who is a cook at Pangani Girls, he had already undergone the surgery and was under 24-hour watch.

"I asked what had happened to him but information was not readily available. All they said was that Kimani had been taken to the hospital by Good Samaritans," said Mr Wachira.

According to Mr Wachira, the information given to the family was that his brother was taken to KNH in a critical condition and was in minimum communication with doctors.

In fact, Kimani himself says he does not recall talking to the medics prior to the surgery.

Both families say that contrary to what the hospital says, they did not see any name tags on their kin.

"A day after Health Cabinet secretary visited, we found them with name tags," said Pauline.

The family through their lawyer are demanding for the medical, saying they did not know the circumstances under which Kimani was operated on.

A discharge summary seen by the Nation read the patient, Samuel Kimani, had undergone a "wrong head surgery."

Female Fraudster: "I Became A Criminal After I Was Defrauded"

Posted: 08 Mar 2018 02:35 AM PST

A 45-year-old mother of five, Ashile Basirat has confessed that she decided to join a criminal group after she became a victim of fraud.

Basirat who was paraded by Ogun State Police Command for allegedly conspiring with robbers to dupe passengers in Abeokuta said her children had advised her to stop the illicit business, but her venture into trade did not yield the desired profit, making her continue her illicit business.

Also paraded was a retired military officer, Ali Audu, arrested for impersonation and using military uniform to extort motorists, who said he did so "to keep body and soul together after his retirement."

The Police Commissioner in the state, Ahmed Iliyasu, paraded Basira alongside Audu and 31 other suspects for various offences at the Eleweran Police headquarters in Abeokuta, Ogun State capital.

The Police boss said Basirat, a suspected member of a fraud syndicate, engaged in fooling unsuspecting passengers by hypnotising them, take them to the nearest Automated Teller Machine, ATM, point to dispose them of cash.

Ilyasu said the syndicate specialised in driving commercial taxi cab, pretending to be drivers and simulated passengers to dupe the unsuspecting members of the public.

Other members of the syndicate are Leonard Ifeanyi, Tajudeen Erinosho and Ashimiyu Olaniyan.

Explaining how her gang operated before they were apprehended, Basirat claimed that her gang members act as passengers in a taxi, pretending to be waiting for one more passenger.

She said when the victim is found, they would tell him or her that there was money in the booth, which could not be spent because it was spiritually locked.

She further explained that the victim would be persuaded to follow them to a priest and "he or she would be brought to me, while I pretend to be an Ifa priestess (Iya Alawo)."

She further disclosed that her victims are too numerous to count as she started the trade in 2011 after she was duped in 2010.

Senate Throws Out Bill Proposing Skirts For NYSC Female Members

Posted: 08 Mar 2018 02:35 AM PST

A bill that would have allowed female members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to wear skirt has been rejected by the Senate.

This followed the presentation of the lead debate on the general principles of the bill which was sponsored by Sen. Emmanuel Bwacha (PDP-Taraba) during plenary.

According to him, the bill is intended to amend Sections 13 and 16 of the Principal Act.

He said the bill sought to ensure that regulations made by the NYSC Directorate prescribing uniforms and exercise regimen did not violate the religious practices and beliefs of corps members.

He said the objective of the bill was to also increase the penalty for the offences contained in the Act, to make such fines reflect the present value of the naira.

Bwacha, who is Deputy Minority Leader, noted that the NYSC was a laudable scheme established in 1973 by the then military Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon.

"It was part of the effort by the Federal Government to rebuild, reconstruct and reconcile Nigerians following the unfortunate incidents of the civil war which ended in 1970.

"It is important to point out that while the scheme has lived up to expectation as a reliable platform for nurturing young patriotic Nigerians, fostering unity and promoting a better understanding of our religious and cultural differences, it has, however, become necessary to amend the Principal Act.

"This is with a view to address observed lapses and shortcomings. One of such lapses is that the penalty for offences contained in the Act is now outdated and in need of urgent review.

"Secondly, Section 16 of the Principal Act mandates the NYSC Directorate to make regulations or by-laws relating to discipline, exercise regimen, uniforms, welfare of corps etc.

"Uniforms and drills adopted by the Directorate have become a basis for tension and controversy between the Directorate and corps members and other members of the public.

"The major bone of contention is that some of the uniforms and drills contravene religious beliefs and practices of corps members and invariably their right to freedom of religion, thought and conscience under the Nigerian Constitution.

"This bill essentially addresses the above mentioned lapses in the Principal Act," he said.

Contributing, Sen. Suleiman Adokwe (PDP-Nasarawa), said "the amendment being suggested is not even worth the trouble.

"This is because the powers to prescribe uniform is what the NYSC Act is to the Directorate.

"I believe if the directorate wants to change the uniform at any time, it is a matter of deciding because it only has power to prescribe the type of uniform.

"The type of uniform is even not prescribed; so I don't know why we should trouble ourselves; all you need to do is to put pressure on the directorate to change the uniform but not necessarily to change the law.

"All the religious organisations that are feeling oppressed by it should put pressure and lobby the directorate to change its dress code," Adokwe said.

Similarly, Sen. Sam Egwu (PDP-Ebonyi) said "we should not waste our time on an issue that we have no constitutional right to amend. That is a minute issue that we should not waste our energy on."

Also, Sen. Jeremiah Husseini (PDP-Plateau) "there is no need for this bill".

In his remarks, the Deputy President of the Senate, Mr Ike Ekweremadu who presided over the proceedings, said: "I am not trying to stop the bill; even if you pass the bill, you must send it to all the states in accordance with section 9(2)."

After a voice vote by Ekweremadu, the bill was rejected by the lawmakers.

Nigeria Has Lost US Oil Export Market Forever — Ibe Kachikwu

Posted: 08 Mar 2018 01:45 AM PST

Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, has said Nigeria has forever lost United States of America, USA, as a significant crude export market.

Up until the early 2000s, the US was Nigeria's top crude importer, buying around 700,000 b/d of the commodity from Africa's biggest producer and climbed as high as 1.31 million b/d in February 2006, according to the US Energy Information Administration.

This volume has, however, been dropping since then, reaching zero import level by June 2015 following a surge in production of shale oil.

"That's gone," Kachikwu said at CERAWeek in Houston, USA.

CERAWeek conference continues outreach between the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, OPEC, and shale producers.

Light sweet Nigerian crude is very similar to the light oil produced in US shale. As US shale production has grown, the appetite for Nigerian crude in the US has dropped dramatically.

Nigerian crude is now favourite for the Asian markets led by India. Nigeria's oil output averaged 2.07 million in February, 20,000 b/d up from January, according to petroleum ministry estimates.

If Okorocha Fields His Son In-Law, APC Will Lose – Senator Uwajimogu

Posted: 08 Mar 2018 01:10 AM PST

Senator Ben Uwajimogu (APC Imo North) has advised the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party to heed President Muhammadu Buhari's recent warning that they should not allow imposition of candidates.

The Sun asks; Governor Rochas Okorocha has stated at different fora that he has replaced you with one Prof. Obiageli as senator that will represent Imo North, come 2019. Are you in any way disturbed?

I'm also surprised just like many over the statement credited to Governor Rochas Okorocha. I read about it in your paper. If not that I did, I wouldn't have believed it even though the governor had made the statement on several occasions. Prof Obiageli who is running as a proxy of Okorocha is going round Okigwe zone claiming to be the next Senator that will represent them in the 9th Senate. My reaction is that it is a tragedy because the governor appears not to realise that in a democracy he doesn't have the capacity to determine who will represent Imo North at the National Assembly in 2019.

The power resides with the people of Okigwe to decide who will represent them. When the time comes Okigwe people will choose those that will represent them in different capacities. No doubt, they will speak with their votes. Like I have said at different fora, the governor is distracting his administration by promising so many people positions he cannot guarantee. Okorocha should realise that power belongs to God. God is the one that will decide who gets into any position. So, my advice to OKorocha is not to play God because the way God made him governor so He will enthrone others into positions as it pleases Him. Therefore, any attempt by anybody no matter how highly placed to cow the people will be resisted.

Before now, you have never disagreed with Okorocha publicly, when did you fall out with the governor?
I have worked with Okorocha since 2011 when I was Speaker of Imo State House of Assembly. We had very harmonious working relationship and those days we discussed most policies before they were implemented. I was carried along and my suggestions and opinion were considered and implemented and the people were better for it. But since the second coming of Okorocha, the policies and programmes of the governor are not people oriented and I have continued to oppose such policies and programmes. They include the demolition of Eke Ukwu Market and people's properties without any commiserate compensation. The fact that a lot of interest groups within the APC were leaving the party in droves because the party in the state was not properly managed shows that Okorocha is running the state as a private enterprise. I can reliably inform you that for over three years of APC, we have not held any meeting where leaders, stakeholders and the governor were invited. Okorocha should also know that APC has grown beyond where one man will decide what happens. Decisions are collectively taken for the good of all members. He should realise that Interest of major stakeholders must be given due consideration. The governor's plan to install his son in-law as his successor did not go down well with not only me but most people in the state. And I made my stand known to the governor and his reaction is to plot how he will push me out of the senate. As the senator representing Imo North, I intend to put my name forward when it is time to run for election as candidate of APC for Okigwe Senatorial District in 2019 and I believe by God's grace I will be re-elected by my people.

You were accused of being used by Okorocha to impeach his former deputy, Jude Agbaso, have you any regret over your involvement in the impeachment saga as Speaker?
I do not have any regret whatsoever because the impeachment of the then deputy governor, Jude Agbaso went through due process. The deputy governor was invited and interviewed. The key issue were: did the state lose money under the deputy governor's watch? Certain amount was paid to a contractor and the deputy governor was the commissioner for Finance at the time and the contractor had abandoned the site for almost 10months and he never returned to site. So, when we contacted the contractor, he said he gave the money to the deputy governor. And the deputy governor was invited and he denied having any contact with the contractor, but when the contractor was brought before the deputy governor and the contractor explained where and how they met, claiming the deputy governor forwarded an account number to him and we asked the deputy governor to provide his call log of MTN and he did not do that. So, it was negligence on the part of the deputy governor either by commission or omission. He did not discharge the duties of the state government to the best of his ability and so he was indicted for not doing that. And when you are indicted as a deputy governor the only option is impeachment and that was exactly what we did. He went to court to challenge his impeachment up to the Supreme Court and he lost. Therefore, I don't have any regret for my involvement in the impeachment. My only regret is that as my friend it affected our friendship. The impeachment was avoidable, if Agbaso had yielded to the political solution. But he did not take advantage of it and so the process of impeachment had to go on and I was the principal officer who presided over the process and having seen the facts presented by members, I had no option but to do the needful.

When you said the state APC has not held meeting for three years, are you not worried that Okorocha may deny you the party ticket in 2019 since the governor is the leader of APC in Imo?
I was one of the founding members of APC in Imo State. As a matter of fact, APC Okigwe zone was formed in my sitting room where we appointed facilitators who went and established the party in their local government areas and wards. APC is stronger in Okigwe zone than in any other zone in the state. It is also in the same Imo North that we have the only APC Senator and one member of House of Representatives of APC from Imo. And indeed, the six members in the state House of assembly are from Okigwe. So, I'm a major stakeholder in APC and Okorocha has right to support whoever he wants but he does not possess the right to impose candidate on the people. If he presents a candidate and APC stakeholders and the delegates find out that the candidate can win election for the party, so be it. But what stakeholders are saying is that it is immoral for the governor to present his so in-law who is from the same political zone, Orlu, to succeed him as governor of Imo State. The young man in question need more experience in other areas of life to be able to govern a state like Imo. Yes, a 42 years old man can be governor especially now that there is clamour for young people to take over leadership of the country but I don't think Uche Nwosu has the experience to run Imo State. I believe APC will lose Imo if Okorocha is allowed to field his in-law as candidate of the party in the governorship race in 2019.
To many, you are seen as being ungrateful to Okorocha having helped you to defeat Chief Atan Achonu to become Senator?

Of course, Okorocha was part of my victory, but you cannot say I'm ungrateful. On December 31, 2016 I led Okigwe leaders including Sen. Ararume to thank Okorocha for his support and as the leader of APC in the state. So, I owe the governor appreciation. He will continue to be the leader of APC in Imo till 2019 when he leaves office and when he leaves office he will be one of our major stakeholders. The fact is that we run a party politics and it is one for all, all for one. In 2015 we had an election and all of us who won and those who lost worked to deliver the governor both at the first and second ballot. Also, we all worked to deliver every other candidate and that was exactly what happened in my own case. So, when you make it sound like it was a different case, I begin to wonder. However, even members of the National Working Committee of APC came from Abuja to assist in campaign and during the election proper. Ararume was at the forefront of my election too just as he assisted Okorocha to be re-elected. So, this is what party politics is all about. I'm still grateful to those who played major roles to ensure I emerged victorious. However, there are things I will not accept no matter how grateful I' am, things that go below my moral acceptance. When things I will not accept happen, I must speak against it.

Before we disagreed openly, I told the governor that I won't support anti -people policies of his administration. For instance, when I was Speaker and Eke Ukwu Market demolition issue came up, I dissuaded OKorocha several times from demolishing the market. And before the recent demolition, other leaders and I sort audience with the governor to discuss and warn him of the consequence of the demolition without provision of an alternative place for the traders but he never gave us audience. Imagine if you demolish people's stores without providing them alternatives, how can the people feed themselves and their families? It is a pity that Governor Okorocha having agreed with the leaders of the market that he will give them time, only went days later to pull down the market during Christmas festival even with their wares inside their shops.
The responsibility of government is to protect lives and property and guarantee the right of the people to pursue happiness. But in the case of Imo State, Okorocha has continued to make the people unhappy through his anti- people policies. When the state government begins to constitute itself into a problem, I won't continue to support such government because I want to show loyalty, and my loyalty should be to the people of Imo and to my constituents.

Senators Slam Governors El-Rufai, Yahaya Bello, Others for Abuse of Power

Posted: 08 Mar 2018 12:55 AM PST

"The problem in Nigeria now is that our democracy is receding and the international community needs to know this. Who says that the Army cannot take over in Nigeria? It is possible. So, let us not joke with our democracy, especially with the way they are going."

These were the exact words of Dr. Ike Ekweremadu, deputy president of the senate while contributing to a debate on alleged high-handedness of some governors on the floor of the Senate yesterday.

The no-love-lost relationship between some governors and senators in some states hit the front burner following a point of order raised by Ahmed Ogembe (Kogi Central) to draw the attention of his colleagues to the "increasing and alarming spate of political intimidation and violence in Kogi Central Senatorial District."

Senators, in their various interventions, did not mince words as they denounced the misuse of power by some governors, a development they said could truncate the nation's democracy.

The lawmakers particularly descended on Governors Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano, Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna and Yahaya Bello of Kogi states.

Ogembe recalled how thugs suspected to be acting on the instruction of Governor Bello invaded the venue of an empowerment programme for some women in his constituency.

The Sun reports that the lawmaker claimed that some hoodlums also attacked his family house in Okene and that of his supporters.

"A lot of my constituents are lying critically injured and traumatised in hospitals across Kogi Central Senatorial District," he also claimed.

President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, who presided recalled how Governor El-Rufai personally supervised the demolition of a house belonging to Senator Suleiman Hunkuyi.

He described the development in Kogi State as a threat to the country's democracy.

He said the Senate would be serious about the issue, arguing that if the problem was not nipped in the bud, other states would follow suit.

Saraki said: "I just came back from Ghana where they were celebrating 25 years of uninterrupted democracy, and as such, it something that we too will celebrate and continue to celebrate even more than that.

"It is not really just about Kogi State but it is clear from what we are seeing that Kogi is coming to a point where it is becoming a threat to our democracy and we are going to be very serious about it. It cannot be seen to be defying our democracy because this is not what our democracy is about.

"For the role that we continue to make in the comity of nations, we must be seen to make good examples to other parts of the world. We must get to the bottom of this; we must take action that must stop this thing from happening and we must condemn this in the strongest term because this kind of action is totally unacceptable.

"It cannot be allowed to continue because it just starts with one state. Some of us have been privileged to be governors before; we are almost 20 years in democracy. This cannot be the democracy that we should be talking about after 20 years; it is totally unacceptable. And we must make sure that we use this opportunity to address the issue.

"We saw the case in Kaduna State, how a governor could proudly say that he is going to bulldoze a house in Nigeria, at this time, and we are all still keeping quiet. These are things that we must condemn totally."

Ekweremadu recalled how his former governor, Sullivan Chime, had a running battle with him for four years.

He also alluded to the face-off between Rabiu Kwankwaso and his successor, Ganduje of Kano State and how the former is unable to visit his state, despite his stint as governor for eight years.

"I want to tell our brother, Ogembe, that some of us passed through the route before but by the grace of God we are here and those oppressors are at home because it is God that gives power.

"In 2011 to 2015, I passed through something worse than what he (Ogembe) was telling us here. The then governor of my state, there was nothing he didn't do to repress me. Traditional rulers were banned from coming to my house. I bought a car for the association of traditional rulers in my senatorial district and because they accepted that vehicle, the chairman was removed from office and dethroned.

"At a particular time, one community wanted to give me a traditional title. The government decreed that there would be no giving of traditional titles in that state for the next one year. So, the Commissioner of Police came to the place to enforce it.

"First, he came to my house to tell me that the governor said he should go and enforce the decree in Enugu State, that there should be no chieftaincy title for the next one year. And I told that Commissioner of Police to go to the venue and then come and tell me if it is something that he can stop. He went, came back and said it would take the whole of 82 Division of the Nigerian Army, Enugu, to stop it. And that chieftaincy title took place."

"So, the problem in Nigeria now is that our democracy is receding and the international community needs to know this. Who says that the Army cannot take over in Nigeria? It is possible. So, let us not joke with our democracy especially with the way they going.

"We are talking of Kwankwaso who was stopped from going to his state, Kano, which he ruled for eight years. In Kaduna, Shehu Sani cannot organise a meeting, and we are talking of democracy.

"And somebody says this democracy is going to continue this way? It is not going to continue. People are holding meetings everyday on how to deal with each and everyone of us here. So, there is need for the international community to know this because they helped us to restore democracy to Nigeria. And some gang of people is trying to truncate the entire democracy. We are now second-class citizens not just in Africa but also even in West Africa, where we are supposed to be controlling.

"The only institution left to save our democracy is this National Assembly and we will never shy away from that responsibility, no matter the oppression, no matter the intimidation. Men will do whatever they want to do, but God will have the final say," he added.

After a long debate, Saraki announced the constitution of an ad hoc committee to investigate the alleged attack on Ogembe in Kogi State.

Dear Atiku, no be by Black Panther o!

Posted: 08 Mar 2018 12:05 AM PST

Written by Abimbola Adelakun
Former Vice President Abubakar Atiku, over the weekend, went to a cinema in Abuja to see the Marvel Cinematic Empire's latest offering, Black Panther.

According to Twitterverse, Atiku became the cinema himself. In the spirit of Baba rere, Baba ke! with which he was heralded, Atiku paid for people's cinema tickets. Relatively, the one with the perspicacity to use the social media to advantage and position himself as the "youth's youth," the former Vice President tweeted his appreciation of the film and wrote his reflection on the lessons Black Panther held for Nigerians.

Atiku is likely to run for the Presidency in 2019 and his activities that are being translated into social media showings are calibrated towards having a good outing in 2019. I have no problems with Atiku's candidature although I believe that, by now, he should be Nigeria's past tense and not jockeying for leadership roles anymore.

Atiku, to be honest, came across as a prepared candidate in 2015. He had done his homework far much more than Muhammadu Buhari. But, what counted against Atiku and all those who stood against Buhari then was corruption. Buhari only needed to shout "corruption," and his followers would take up the refrain without asking him what he meant by corruption and what innovative ways he had designed to counter it.

Come 2019, Buhari can no longer use corruption as his unique selling point and get reasonable people to buy his wares. At the rate the "anything but Buhari" sentiment is percolating, the choice for the Presidency might fall on Atiku. That is one reason he should be taken seriously and interrogated with vigour. Otherwise, Nigerians will soon find themselves buying another overrated and overpriced presidential candidate; one who cannot even be honest or reflective enough to see when the ground beneath his feet is giving way.

One of the most significant failings of Nigerians in 2015 was allowing Buhari to get away with not debating with his opponents. If we had stopped to ponder then, we should have asked what manner of officer runs away from battle? From 2015, the cowardice that made Buhari skip an essential ritual of democracy has been a defining trait of his Presidency. From avoiding talking to Nigerians, to the aloofness that has kept him away from those who have been slaughtered in their homes because his government has done poorly on security, Buhari has checked every box.

For 2019, it is crucial we learn a lesson and not, once again, let the ostentatious parade of populism obscure what matters. Atiku's buying film tickets, watching a popular movie, and writing his reflection on it are all part of the games that politicians play at election time. I understand that he has to connect to millennials but beyond all those, he should be talking about specific ideas that show that he has the potential for the creative governance Nigeria needs.

The lessons he took away from the fictional country of Wakanda are the "safe" ones, the kind of things that say a lot without saying anything tangible. While films are soft power political projects, they are also just entertainment. They condense realities and therefore can oversimplify things for its audience. One of the criticisms of some other films now showing in the theatre such as Victoria and Abdul and Darkest Hour is how they bury the rubble of painful history under the gloss of cinematic representation of colonial nobility. Victoria and Abdul talks about an unlikely friendship between the Queen of England and an Indian servant in an era where India was being plundered by rapacious colonialists. The film does not see or hear or talk of the great evils of colonialism to Indians. Instead, it features the trope of a noble savage in an Indian man elevated to civilised western standards and who, in turn, elevated the Queen's virtues with his earthiness. Darkest Hour narrates the iconic leadership of Winston Churchill in an era darkened by uncertainty; where crucial choices were defining. It carefully elides his racism, imperialism, and penchant for eugenics.

Films are great places to look for inspiration, but no country needs leadership that takes its lessons from films. Africa needs leaders that have read widely, and who, like the sons of Issachar, have an understanding of the times and what a country needs to do to raise its head. They should have read the history of all cultures from Africa to ancient Greek, philosophy, and also have an understanding of how the modern world functions. A popular fare like Black Panther is highly unlikely to fill in those gaps.

Atiku can watch all the film he likes, but, when he wants to address the issues that face Nigeria, he needs more than a popular culture reference. If at all he must talk about Wakanda, he should be having a brutal self-reflection on why he is one of the many reasons Nigeria is not – and cannot yet be- like Wakanda. If he reflects on the leadership he was part of between 1999 and 2007, he will come up with far more uneasy answers on why things are the way they are, and what needs to be done.

He would understand why the vision of Africa he wants us to aspire to in Wakanda came from America, and not among Africans themselves. Black Panther was a comic started in the 1960s by a group of young men who were incidentally Jews. More than 50 years after they first dreamt of a sophisticated African future, no African country has come near to inhabiting that vision. We are poorer than ever, our population is outpacing resources, and we still look towards the west for everything — from food to technology, and even to a vision of the future. Our writers hardly write futuristic stories or science fictions; our stories instead are full of pessimism: poverty, corruption, disease and dehumanising spectres. To write stories like Black Panther, we will need to have given our children quality education that premises scientific thinking and its endless possibilities.

Then, they would ask why our schools are so decrepit, and why our children are given an education so poor and outdated that dreams of the future are almost an unaffordable luxury. Recently, a Ghanaian teacher went viral on social media for drawing a computer on the blackboard for his students. In 2018, African children are being made to learn computer in a way it would not have been done even in the 80s. If African leaders gave up some of their vainglorious superfluities, they would be able to provide standard schools to children and hopefully even buy them computers. But no, never, they will not do that because they are too selfish and myopic. They will rather spend the money on frivolities, travel abroad, and try to impress western leaders who already think of them as "shithole" tropes.

A future like Wakanda is worth aspiring to, but the path to that kind of future will take much more than drawing apparent lessons. It takes a lot of work; self-introspection, building a new political and social culture; and a leadership that has cultivated enough self-mastery to challenge our social culture, and rightfully too.

Ours is a society where books are unavailable in schools but some of the most vibrant publishing presses are run by the church. They issue out books containing magical tales until impressionable minds are convinced that science is the white man's indulgence, that some supernatural realities exist beyond the natural and we will never know. In that kind of social context, how can you have a society where vibranium is a thing let alone have the citizenry that understands what to do with it? Sorry, Atiku, you took away only the easy lessons from Black Panther.

A Lagos guy who went berserk after taking excess of the opioid pain medication in a fruitless attempt to get high, has been taken to a hospital after overdosing on Tramadol.

It was gathered that the young man had to be restricted by being tied up by people around as he behaved strangely in public.

Water was poured on him and garri fed him as those who tied him up did all they could to bring him back from the "excited state".

Too many young men on drugs these days. Hope they learn.

"When a government is transiting to a new term, it's proper to disengage all those who served in the former tenure.

"Governor Willie Obiano will start his second term on 17th of March. So, all those who served in the first term should go.

How to Have Confidence in Prayer

Posted: 07 Mar 2018 08:50 AM PST

You have to know that it's not every pastor that can attend to your issue, it has nothing to do with age. The fact that you have gone to many pastors and nothing changes is possible they are not 'Graced' for your issue. Simple! Once you meet a pastor who is 'Graced' for your particular issue, you will see results. It doesn't mean those pastors are not real; some of them will do well for women looking for babies, couple's marital crisis, etc. That is the reality.

Read the post on prayer...
Ever pray and then wonder if it were going to do any good? Ever knelt down and bowed your head, but felt disconnected, as if your prayers were just drifting off into the ether? Ever had prayers go without an answer of any kind?

This is an interesting dynamic, really. Most of the time, we have no trouble accepting that the Bible is true — that it's God-breathed, that it's the Word of Life. Then we turn around and question what the Bible says about prayer. We might not see it that way, yet that's what happens when we doubt the strength or usefulness of our prayer life.

The Book of James should encourage you as it proves the power of prayer:

"The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective." — 5:16b (NIV)

"Effective" is translated from the Greek word energeō, from which our English word "energy" is derived. I love that! The Message paraphrases it like this: "The prayer of a person living right with God is something powerful to be reckoned with."

God's Word to us promises that there is authority in our prayers. They get things moving. They get results. Our prayer is the fuse and He is the dynamite.

Still not convinced? Consider where this portion of the verse appears. It's sandwiched between a calling to be spiritually healed — "...pray for each other so that you can live together whole and healed"—and the reminder of Elijah's prayer for an act in the physical realm: "...Elijah, for instance, human just like us, prayed hard that it wouldn't rain, and it didn't..."

Physical. Emotional. Spiritual. There is nothing off-limits for the power of prayer.

Make no mistake. Our prayers are powerful not because of anything we do or who we are. Remember, we're just the fuse. It's because of who He is and what He can do. Therefore, we can approach Him with an honest, upright, and believing heart. Then God is eager to respond, doing what only He can.

That's why James also reminds us to quit questioning what prayer can do:

"But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do." — 1:6–8 (NIV)

No mincing words there. We need to drop the doubting of what we're doing when we kneel before the God of all creation. Quit questioning the effectiveness of presenting our requests to Him. Earnestly seek His will for your life, His wisdom for your mind, and His love to fill your heart. He delights in answering you. He is all about His glory. You can fully trust Him with your prayers, as you also trust the truth of His character, purposes, and promises.

Fitness is a struggle for so many people. Whether it's finding the time, desire, energy, discipline, balance, whatever the case, fitness can be a stumbling block. Our response may be to pray for help, but in our heart of hearts, we don't expect it to come. We don't expect an answer. We don't believe there is dynamite on the other end of the fuse.

Worse yet, we dump water on the fuse after it has been lit. We don't really want an answer to our prayer because it might mean giving up ___________. Or we fail to listen for an answer. We don't consider the words of a loved one or examine Scripture with a truly open mind. In- stead, we go about our days, too busy or unwilling to listen. Or maybe we ignore the answer we are given. We push aside that little nudge in our hearts and fail to follow through in obedience. We are double-minded. Unstable.

Before we know it, we are letting our struggle define us. That's why our prayers need to be offered with a clean heart — with pure motives, earnestly. God knows us better than we know ourselves and He can discern our intent. Yet, out of our vulnerability, we can approach Him void of pretention, full of confidence.

Prayer is one of our greatest tools for good and most effective weapons against the enemy. We should wield it with great confidence.

It knows no limits. Prayer is bound by nothing. God has the power to change anything and we have the privilege to approach Him about everything. We would be wise to do so, and to do so with confidence.

Prayer;
Father, thank You for giving us access to You through prayer and for the delight You take in listening. Will You forgive me when I go through the motions with my prayer life? Give me a pure heart, Father, to believe and not doubt. Lord, I want to trust not only that You hear me but that You'll help me. I want to trust in your greater purposes for the countless things I do not know, see, or understand. Amen.

Dino Melaye: APC Has Borrowed More Than PDP Without Anything To Show

Posted: 07 Mar 2018 07:40 AM PST

Senator Dino Melaye (APC Kogi West) has said the government of President Muhammadu Buhari has in three years borrowed more than previous governments of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, without any clearly defined or identified programme to point at.

The lawmaker was reacting to the refusal by the president to assent to a bill seeking the establishment of Peace Corps of Nigeria.

Buhari had rebuffed to append his assent to the bill citing unavailability of resources as his reason for his refusal as funding the organisation will be a financial burden on the federal government.

But Melaye, adopting a point of order on Wednesday during plenary at the Senate and relying on it rules, persuaded the upper legislative chamber to revisit the bill with a view to veto the President if he fails to rescind his rejection of the bill.

He said, "The same thing happened when the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps was to be established; there was also the same complaint that there was no money and all of that.

"But today, we can see the advantages of the civil defence and how they have helped in safeguarding government infrastructure.

"About $5.5bn was borrowed from euro bond; what part of it will the youths of this country benefit from?

"About $1bn is to be spent on security and how does this affect the youth of this country.

"Without fear or favour, the Peoples Democratic Party, in 16 years, borrowed N6tn and this government in three years, has borrowed N11tn but there is no specific programme that will empower the youth.

"Also, N500bn was earmarked for the social investment programme of the Federal Government, but we have not seen any impact.

"If the Peace Corps is given an opportunity to exist, thousands will be employed and this will help to fight unemployment in this country.

"We may need to write Mr. President to review his position; if not, we have the power on behalf of the Nigerian youths who voted us to veto him so that people will become the ultimate beneficiaries of this bill.

"The youth of this country must be given priority and they must be respected."
