It's Time For My Son-in-Law To Be Governor – Okorocha

Posted: 09 Mar 2018 03:35 AM PST

Imo state governor, Rochas Okorocha, said that the time has come for his son-in-law, Mr. Uche Nwosu, to be the next governor of Imo state.

Okorocha in a release to newsmen in Owerri, through his Chief Press Secretary, CPS, Mr. Sam Onwuemeodo, was apparently reacting to a statement credited to a group called Restoration Coalition of APC, which vowed to stop the endorsement of his son-in-law, Nwosu, to be the next governor of the state.

The governor insisted the group was only envy of his son-in-law.

Okorocha defended his support for his son-in-law that, "Endorsement is a Public Statement or action showing support of something or somebody. It has been part of our democracy.

"And it is surprising that some people have been loosing sleep over the several endorsements the young Uche Nwosu has been getting. The difference is that his own endorsement is like a revolution, and almost all the other aspirants are feeling threatened."

The release viewed it as an attempt "To deceive the weary and indeed the general public. They should have gone ahead to also endorse their own candidate.

"What is their headache. Is Governor Okorocha the only governor who has indicated interest in one of the members of his Political family to succeed him.

"They should follow events in other States. And also do their political research. Endorsement has been there. And they should ask their Candidate to withdraw if he is not popular to the extent of attracting people to endorse him. Uche Nwosu is the man. This is his time and nobody should envy him."

Adding that, "They are habitual Coordinators of guber aspirants. They cannot Contest election. Some of them were brought into Politics by Governor Okorocha. And today, they have become Coordinators, and none of them had won his booth in the past elections.

"They have no electoral value to add to any party or aspirant. They are Political Consumers and not Political Producers. People should ignore them."

"Saraki Is Like A Son To Me" - Senator accused of plotting to impeach him

Posted: 09 Mar 2018 03:10 AM PST

Senator Abdullahi Adamu (APC, Nassarawa West), accused of spearheading alleged plot to oust Senate President, Bukola Saraki, has debunked the allegation.

Adamu was accused by Obinna Ogba, (Ebonyi Central), on Thursday, March 8, during plenary with what he called "evidence" of Adamu's plot to oust Saraki.

Ogba said he has a transcript of Adamu speaking with other people about his plans.

"I rise this morning to bring to the notice of the senate that there is a plan by some people in this senate, maybe under the leadership of my distinguished colleague, particularly senator Abdullahi Adamu. Mr. President, you remember in January, distinguished senator Misau made a comment here that there was a plan to remove the Senate President and in fact the leadership.

"Now, I have reliable information that some people are already planning to destabilise the senate, including the senate leadership by organising demonstration of which money is already exchanging hands. I believe that all of us are all leaders in this in this country and everybody who see something that will destabilise the country or the senate or even the democracy should avoid it.

"As we are here, if there is any is going on, you have the opportunity to raise it and not to go outside the chambers to start planning civil resistance, market women to come for demonstration against the leadership of the senate.

"Mr. President, I want this senate to investigate this matter properly. I have evidence to show what I'm saying. There is a telephone conversation going on which any other person can also print it out, between senator Abdullahi Adamu and some other people," Ogba said before laying hi evidence.

Ike Ekeweremadu, deputy senate president, who presided over plenary said anyone planning to destabilise the country "is not doing us good".

"The difference between military, autocratic regime and any other oppressive regime is the parliament. Once we remove the parliament, there is going to be problem. In whatever we do, we must continue to preserve the sanctity of the parliament," Ekeweremadu said.

But reacting, Adamu said Saraki is like a son to him, denying being involved in the alleged plot to remove him.

Speaking with reporters hours after Ogba's statement, the accused senator said he found what transpired at the chamber as "amusing".

"A colleague called me and drew my attention to what happened on the floor of the senate today. It is amusing but very sadden at the same time.

"I am not in anyway after Saraki. Saraki is like a son to me. I had the right to contest for the senate president seat three years ago when the 8th senate was inaugurated, but I never did because I wasn't interested.

"It is therefore, not logical for anyone to say I'm interested in the seat now, and will be planning to destabilise the senate. To achieve what? For what purpose? It is not right for anyone to make such unfounded insinuations.

"We are almost three years in office, the election year is drawing nearer, and I think anyone thinking of upstaging the leadership of the senate for any reason will only be fighting a lost battle because it is not what should naturally occupy the mind of any serious-minded lawmaker.

"As for me, let me repeat that I'm not in anyway after Saraki, I can't be after Saraki, and I won't do anything to upstage the leadership as being claimed because it's a fruitless venture.

"But if I believe strongly in a cause, I stand by it. If I've offended anyone by my strong stand on some issues in the senate in accordance with my conviction, I stand by it anytime. But the issue of trying to cause disaffection in the senate is a no issues at all.

"Whatever we do in this world, we must be ready to bear our cross, I'm ready to bear mine. Anyone who knows me will say clearly that I'm not plotting to remove Saraki. Let them look for another thing to say," he said.

Adamu challenged those who levelled the allegations against him to provide "incontrovertible facts" to prove their claims.

Adamu is one of the senator's who kicked against the amended election timetable for 2019.

He was later removed as chairman of the northern senators' forum after being accused "financial mismanagement and maladministration".

Customer Battles Sterling Bank Over N219m Fraud

Posted: 09 Mar 2018 03:10 AM PST

A microfinance institution, OHHA Microfinance Bank Limited, has accused Sterling Bank Plc of defrauding it of N219 million it deposited with the bank.

The accusation was made in a letter to Sterling Bank by OHHA Microfinance Bank's lawyers, Festus Keyamo Chambers. Dated 20 February and jointly signed by Messrs B.I Dakum and John Ainetor, the letter stated that OHHA Microfinance Bank operates two fixed deposit accounts (No. 514/1152051/74/0 Deal Ref. Slip No. DD No. 0138058 and No. 514/11520505/1/74/1 Deal Ref. Slip No. DD No.0133059) with Sterling Bank.

Both accounts, it said, have been operated for years and contain a deposit of N219million. The accounts said the microfinance bank was operated by Mr. Oliver Anidiobi, manager of Sterling Bank Market Road branch, Enugu State, who also doubles as its account manager.

While the accounts were in operation, OHHA Microfinance Bank said it exchanged many letters with Sterling Bank. In each of its replies, OHHA Microfinance Bank added, Sterling Bank confirmed the existence of the accounts and informed that the microfinance bank's investment would be rolled over at Sterling Bank's prevailing money market rate.

However, OHHA Microfinance Bank said that when it instructed Sterling Bank to terminate the fixed deposit and credit its current account on maturity with the principal and accrued interest, the latter refused. This made OHHA Microfinance Bank to briefed O. A. Omotayo and Associates, a law firm, which made the same demands.

Sterling Bank, added OHHA Microfinance Bank, admitted the existence of the accounts but denied the existence of any fixed deposit investment.

Dino Melaye Raises Alarm Over Military Items Allegedly Imported By Gov. Yahaya Bello

Posted: 09 Mar 2018 02:00 AM PST

The political war between Kogi State governor, Yahaya Bello and Senator Dino Melaye increased a notch on Thursday after the lawmaker uncovered a shipment allegedly ordered by the governor at the sea port.

While speaking in a point of order he raised at the floor of the senate on Thursday, Senator Dino Melaye, accused Governor Yahaya Bello of importing military gadgets into the country, adding that the items were intercepted by the Nigeria Customs at the Abuja Airport. See photos...

Dino prayed the ad-hoc committee constituted by the senate to investigate the 'disruption' of the poverty alleviation programme initiated by the Kogi Central senator, Emmanuel Ogembe.

According to PT, the senate at the opening of the plenary had inaugurated a 7-man committee, chaired by James Manager, to investigate the issue which was extensively debated at Tuesday's plenary.

"Mr President, due to my private investigation I got a very serious revelation yesterday and I am so happy that a committee constituted by the senate under the leadership of the ranking senator James Manager," Melaye said.

"Mr President few minutes ago, the Nigerian Customs intercepted sewn military camouflages with boller hats, many bullet proof vests, night vision googles, tactical boots, tactical knapsacks, training canvas, boxing gloves etc.

"These items were intercepted by the Nigerian customs because they did not come with end user certificates. When you are bringing military equipment into the country they must come with end user certificate certified by the national security adviser."

The lawmaker said an aide attached to the Governor made several futile attempts to clear the items at the Customs.

"Upon seizure of these items, one Jerry Omadara, who is the S.A security to governor of Kogi state went to the customs officers and told them that the items belonged to the Kogi state government and even gave them his complimentary card.

"Jerry Omadara presented himself physically before customs. The name of the company that imported these items is SEC Communications Nigeria Limited and a search in the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) has revealed the owners of the company connected to Kogi state government. These items, as I speak, detention notice is on them.

"Up to the morning, these items are with NAHCO at the airport here in Abuja. Mr President I thereby move that the vibrant committee constituted this morning under the chairmanship of James Manager move to the airport to make sure that these items are there and not moved and properly investigated. I said before that militias were being equipped by the Kogi state government.

"I believe the committee will unravel the mystery behind this seizure. A situation were a governor is already importing military uniforms and other gadgets when he is not a contractor in the ministry of defence. It is dangerous trend and the senate was right when it said Yahaya Bello is a threat to democracy."

The senate resolved to include the allegation as part of issues the ad-hoc committee will investigate.

Nigerian Man Protests Bitterly After He Was Allegedly Refused Holy Communion Because Of His Beard

Posted: 09 Mar 2018 01:20 AM PST

A Nigerian man has taken to social media to express his displeasure after allegedly being denied the Holy Communion because of his beard.

According to the young man identified as Chuka Amadiume, this happened recently at an Anglican church despite his insistence.

Read what he posted below:

"Two days ago, I went for Holy Communion at an Anglican church in Nigeria.I received a shocker!

"The Venerable aka the Pastor aka the Archdeacon told me i would not be given the "bread & wine" because i had a beard!I insisted and was given, i left really heartbroken!

"Did a little research and came up with these findings proving that most of the great Christians in the Bible had beards;

"1) Leveticus 19 vs 27

"2) Psalm 133

"3) 2nd Samuel 10 vs 5

"4) 1st Samuel 21 vs 13

"5) Ezekiel 5 vs 1

"6) Ezra 9 vs 3

"7) Isaiah 50 vs 6

"My question is:
"a) Did "Jesus Christ" have a beard?

"b) Was it ever written in the bible that i will not make heaven if i have a beard?

Controversial Peace Corps Bill: Matters Arising

Posted: 09 Mar 2018 12:20 AM PST

Written by Carl Umegboro
President Muhammadu Buhari last week declined his assent on the bill establishing Peace Corps of Nigeria earlier passed by the National Assembly. In the reasons adduced by the Presidency for withholding assent as required by law, apart from the financial implications, the bill has overlapping responsibilities of existing security agencies.

The conflict has generated hullabaloo in the society with the executive and legislature drawing a battle line.

Funny enough, the episode developed at a time countless innocent citizens either by politically-motivated or communal crises have been massacred as animals by unknown gunmen. A cursory look at the evil and sophisticated weapons being used by the perpetrators of the heinous crimes leaves many to believe that the attacks may not be completely isolated from the security agencies, and therefore, a need on the Federal Government to be cautious in empowering and equipping any group of people with arms.

Without a doubt, the legislative powers of the federation pursuant to Section 4(1) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended are vested in the National Assembly. And by the provision of Section 58(5), the National Assembly is clothed with unfettered powers to override the President on bills with two-thirds majority votes. But sensibly, could the latter be liberally invoked without first considering the whys and wherefores of the President's knockback?

To start with, the Navy, for example, is vested with the duty of providing security at the seashores; the Air Force on the airspace; the Army at the territorial borders whilst the police handle internal security in the society. This therefore connotes division of labour with clear-cut jurisdictions and responsibilities distinct from one another for security of lives and property pursuant to Section 14(2)(b) of the Constitution. By this arrangement, all the security agencies identify clearly their respective primary operations zone which therefore eliminates unnecessary squabbles. Though in exceptional cases, there may be joint operations as directed by the President who doubles as the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.

At the moment, the police already are complemented by the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps alongside the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and Department of State Services. The Federal Government stringently carved out financial crimes from the duties of the police for the EFCC as a specialised agency albeit both agencies operate with coordinate jurisdictions.

On the other hand, the DSS complements the police in providing security to high-ranking government officials and other intelligence issues. This is sufficiently convincing that there are many agencies sharing responsibilities already with the police; sadly, the police remain under-funded and short-staffed. Arguably, proliferation of agencies is no remedy to security of lives and property but efficient coordination and funding which aligned with the President's explanations.

Incidentally, the Peace Corps bill aimed at establishing the organisation to perform the same duties delineated for the police was rejected by the executive arm, which will be held liable if their services are compromised. The questions begging for answers to the promoters of the bill are; first, are the ins and outs adduced by the President weighty enough for the bill to be rejected? Second, what responsibilities would the proposed agency be assigned with since grassroots and internal security is the duty of the police, and third, will the legislature coordinate their operations if established and fund the agency from its mind-blowing budgets?

Above all, is it proficient to establish a security agency without necessary planning and funding knowing that a security agency that is redundant will likely take advantage of uniforms and arms at its disposal to do more harm than good to the society? Arising from these, duplication of security agencies without clearly spelt-out duties is unconsciously calling for a catastrophe. At most, the interested applicants could seek for recruitments in the existing organised agencies rather than sporadically set up parallel organisations with overlapping duties which will create unnecessary disasters in no distant time.

Again, if the proposed body is not targeted as a political tool for the forthcoming elections, why the sudden pressure when it could run as voluntary organisation until there are a necessity, adequate resources and mechanism in place.

In sum, a new security organisation to be controlled by the Presidency should logically come through executive bills after a thorough consideration of the prerequisites, necessaries, funding and coordination. The DSS and the EFCC are productive on account of holistic planning prior to their establishment. Thus, an agency proposed to exist under the executive arm cannot suitably be a product of private sponsored bills. Undeniably, employment is a fundamental issue in any society but the principal objective of security agencies is not employment driven. It is perilous to empower a group with arms without proper coordination, control and training as the helpless society will certainly bear the repercussions.

At this point, the appropriate legislative action is to deliberate extensively on the two cogent explanations by the President instead of absurdly gathering signatures as laws that are impracticable will inevitably retire in the wastebaskets. Generally, the legislature cannot arbitrarily foist a body on the executive without consensus, otherwise, it amounts to an abuse of legislative powers. Thus, to override the President should always be the last resort and strictly after extensive consultations with certainty of mischief.

Tears of Joy As First Lady Reunites Old Woman With Her Children After 38 Years

Posted: 08 Mar 2018 01:25 PM PST

Mrs. Ebelechukwu Obiano, the wife of the Anambra State Governor, has on Thursday reunited a 72-year-old widow, Rose Anene, with her children.

Mrs. Anene was said to have left her family for an unknown destination for 38 years because of mental ailment.

Records at the Mentally Challenged Home at Nteje, Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State, showed that Anene was brought from Lagos to the home in 2004.

The Punch reports that it was in 2014 that Mrs. Obiano took special interest in the 72-year-old mother of five and commenced proper treatment for her.

The commissioner for Women's Affairs and Social Welfare, Dr. Victoria Chikwelu, said, "It was only four days ago that Mrs. Obiano ordered that Anene be reunited with her family in Awka, Anambra State.

"Upon Mrs. Anene's miraculous revelation that she hailed from Awka, we had to traverse the length and breadth of Awka before we could link her with her children at Umudioka, Awka," Chikwelu said.

Speaking on the occasion of the 2018 International Women's Day and Discharge of former Mentally Challenged Persons on Thursday, Mrs. Obiano officially handed Mrs. Anene over to her first son, Azubuike Anene, in the presence of two of his siblings.

Mrs. Obiano said, "I am delighted that we are gathered here to celebrate the 2018 International Women's Day, and recovery of some of our brothers and sisters who were once thought incapable of meeting their obligations due to various degrees of mental challenges.

"We are not forgetting the special case of our sister (Anene) who was once assumed lost but now found and fully recovered, ready to join her kit and kin."

She said over 62 inmates of the Nteje home, drawn from different states, including Abia, Ebonyi, Edo, Oyo and Anambra, had been treated and rehabilitated since her husband became governor in 2014.

She added, "We give God almighty all the glory for the recovery of the eleven inmates we are discharging today especially the remarkable case of our sister, Rose.

"It may interest you to know that last year, one of the recovering inmates was sponsored to a corrective surgery to remove a growth in his two hands as a result of injury sustained at the peak of his illness.

"The surgery was successfully carried out at Chukwuemeka Odimegwu Ojukwu Teaching Hospital, Amaku, Awka; and today, he has fully recovered.

"We have touched many lives positively across our communities through the houses we built for indigent widows, toilets to promote hygiene in rural markets, training and empowerment of over 3,020 women, free cleft lip surgeries for 45 children and care for the mentally challenged, and so on."

She assured of post-recovery rehabilitation for the inmates by making sure they are meaningfully engaged after their discharge.

"Nigeria Hijacked By Men With No Ideas" — Sule Lamido

Posted: 08 Mar 2018 04:10 AM PST

A former Governor of Jigawa State and PDP presidential aspirant, Alhaji Sule Lamido, yesterday in Calabar, alleged that Nigeria has been hijacked and is being ruled by men who lack ideas.

Lamido said the ruling APC was only implementing what the former ruling party, the PDP, drew.

He stated this when he paid a consultative visit to Governor Ben Ayade on his presidential aspiration.

Lamido alleged that whereas PDP was accused of spending about N6tn on some national projects in 16 years, the APC had wasted more than N20tn in three years and had nothing to show for it.

He, therefore, wondered why only people in the opposition were being vilified and labelled as corrupt.

On security, Lamido said killing and destruction were no longer strange, but that the question now was, "How many have been killed today?"

Ayade on his part, described Lamido as "humane, people-friendly and man of depth and concern who turned Jigawa State into an Eldorado."
