Nigerian Lady, Oluwafemiayo, Breaks World Record Posted: 04 Dec 2017 01:57 AM PST Nigeria's Alice Oluwafemiayo on Sunday broke the women's +86kg world record at the World Para Powerlifting Championships in Mexico. Oluwafemiayo won after lifting 140kg in her first three attempts. In her fourth attempt, she broke the earlier world record in the category – set by her compatriot Loveline Obiji in 2014 – by lifting 145kg. Nigeria have thus won their first medal at the competition. The team have 11 powerlifters in Mexico. Obiji did not compete in the event. China's Feifei Zheng (130kg) claimed silver at her first major international competition, while Egypt´s 2010 world champion Geehan Hassan (125kg) completed the podium finish. "I feel very happy, it was not something I was expecting," Oluwafemiayo was quoted as saying by paralympic.org. Other Nigerians will be in action today in other categories. National coach, Feyisetan Are, said the lifters would win more medals at the competition. "I believe that Nigeria are the best in powerlifting in the world. The first event of the competition and we have a world record already broken. Nigerians should expect more from the lifters in Mexico because they are capable of doing so," he told our correspondent." culled from Olu famous Mr Olumide's Blog |
IBB, Jonathan Reject Governors Choice For PDP Chairman Posted: 04 Dec 2017 01:07 AM PST *Battle for 2019 deepens crisis There are moves to checkmate some Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors pushing to install the party's chairman at Saturday's convention, sources said at the weekend. Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike is leading plan to put former Interim Chairman Uche Secondus on the much coveted seat. But former military President Ibrahim Babangida, some founding fathers, ex-President Goodluck Jonathan and members of the Board of Trustees (BoT) may have teamed up to block the governors whose ranks may have been broken. Four governors, including two from the Southeast, may jettison the plan to make a former Acting National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus, the chairman, it was learnt at the weekend. A party source said: "We are set for a make or break convention between the old brigades, led by Gen. Babangida and Jonathan, and the governors." With Gen. Babangida are founding fathers, like former Minister of Information Prof. Jerry Gana, ex-PDP national chairmen, including Sen. Ahmadu Ali, members of the BoT, ex-ministers, ex-governors and former Deputy Senate President Ibrahim Mantu. According to The Nation, the new brigade includes Wike, Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose, Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu and state party chairmen "who want to put an end to godfatherism and hijack the structure of the party". The source, who pleaded not to be named, went on: "The hidden plan of the two groups is the battle for the 2019 presidential ticket of the PDP. So far, it is apparent that the founding fathers and Jonathan are beholding to former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, to whom they want to give the ticket. "The governors seem to have a focus on another candidate either an ex-governor or a defector into the party. The game is tough because whoever controls the structure of the party may produce the PDP flagbearer for the 2019 presidential poll. "As it is now, the governors are in control of more delegates than the founding fathers who are scavenging for delegates. Even ex-President Goodluck Jonathan is not sure of the 50 per dent control of delegates from Bayelsa State." A former member of the NWC said: "Gen. Babangida, Jonathan and others are determined to tame the governors. They have succeeded in breaking their ranks because four of the PDP governors may back out of their colleagues plans to install Secondus as the next chairman. "The governors have decided to abandon their colleagues following plea from Babangida and Jonathan. "But the governors have the resources to make it a battle to the finish. The old brigades depend on goodwill whereas delegates need lifeline because the party had been out of power for two and a half years." "Babangida is crying out now because he has seen the handwriting on the wall that these governors are in charge. The founding fathers are banking on votes from the North to stop the governors from hijacking the party. The source said: "The situation is dicey. The party may end up in a deeper crisis because the chairman that will emerge might cause a split. Once we are in a crisis, 2019 presidential poll will be an easy ride for APC." It was learnt that a former National Security Adviser Gen. Aliyu Gusau, has been the arrowhead of the outreach by PDP founding fathers to the governors to allow the chairman to come from Southwest. They are working for Prof. Tunde Adeniran. "Gen. Gusau has been trying to restore the ideals of PDP as espoused by Gen. Babangida and other founding fathers. But the governors may fight the old brigades to a standstill." culled from Olu famous Mr Olumide's Blog |
Angry Mob Chases SARS Men For Shooting Youth In Lagos Posted: 04 Dec 2017 12:32 AM PST There has been uproar on the social media after some operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Lagos State Command, allegedly shot a youth in the Yaba area of the state. The criticism followed a viral video which showed an angry mob chasing a black bus used by the operatives.A Twitter user, Charley, had posted about the shooting on his handle, but did not indicate the exact location in Yaba or the identity of the victim. He wrote, "A SARS officer just shot a boy in the head right in front of me WTF! I'm so shocked! "This happened in Yaba on Thursday right in my hood. They (SARS) stole the phone of a 'yahoo boy' and shot another boy in the arm. The youth in the area mobilised and gave them a chase." Many Nigerians had taken to the Internet, expressing their experiences and those of their relations and friends in the hands of SARS across the country. The protest was hinged on the #EndSARS campaign, an online petition to the National Assembly which had almost reached its 10,000 signatory targets as of 2pm on Sunday. A poster, with the identification, Ayo FBI, said a student of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, Osun State, who was the only son of his parents, was killed by SARS men. He wrote, "In 2009, my mom's friend's son, Biodun, who was a student of OAU was going to Ibadan (Oyo State) from Ile Ife on the June 23 and was killed by SARS because they wanted to take him away and he resisted because he didn't do anything. He was his mother's only child. #EndSARS." A Twitter user, identified as Negro boss, lamented that he was unlawfully detained for six months. "Some years back, a popular artiste was killed by cultists in LASU and SARS packed all of us at a bar. We were released six months later. #EndSARS," he said. One Tessyama, said he and his friends were robbed by SARS operatives about two years ago in a bar. "Was it not SARS that robbed me and some friends in a bar two years ago? We thought they were robbers until the bar owner told us it's SARS men and that's how they frustrate them there (at the bar). #EndSARS," he tweeted. Another Nigerian, Moshood Alli, explained how he coughed up N40,000 for no offence. He said, "SARS at Lagos VI intercepted my motorcycle, searched me, found nothing but school ID, claimed it was fake, accompanied me to my hotel room, found my phones and received N40,000 in payment via ATM. #EndSARS." Ali Haruna Babatunde wrote, "#EndSARS. They came to my neighbourhood, drank and didn't pay, when the seller threatened to report them, they started shooting into the air." A user identified as Cross, said he was taken for a suspect because he looked good. "Your civil rights disappear the moment SARS holds you. I am not even a yahoo boy, but I kept begging them when they held me at Ikeja. I was running late for a business pitch, and my offence was 'dressing too fine, but not be into fraud'. Sigh," he posted. A woman, Pets for Sale, also joined in the campaign, saying, "Even as a woman, you are not safe from SARS and their wahala (trouble). I've been manhandled by one on the road before because 'Wetin small girl like you dey carry two phones do'." Somto Ronald explained that SARS operatives extorted N40,000 each from him and 23 others over a fight they were not involved in. He wrote, "Early this year, SARS entered my lodge by 1am, a student lodge, and arrested all the boys (24 boys) just because one guy in my lodge allegedly fought with another guy. None of us was bailed with less than N40,000. #EndSARS." Ayodeji also posted about the alleged uncivil conduct of some SARS operatives in Abuja. He wrote, "The SARS officers here in Abuja are actually criminals legally carrying guns. You see them at Area 1, Durumi, Garki Village, smoking weed, sniffing all sorts of dangerous drugs among criminals with guns in their hands. I see them and just shake my head. #EndSARS#EndSARSBrutality." Reacting to the shooting of a youth in the Yaba area, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Chike Oti, said the incident had not been reported to the police. He stated that the authenticity of the video was in doubt. Oti, however, in a statement on Sunday, said the command was investigating an assault perpetrated by some SARS men in a yet-to-be ascertained location. He said, "It has come to the knowledge of the acting Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, Ag.Cp Edgal Imohimi, that some policemen attached to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, in a yet-to-be ascertained location, brutalised an innocent resident. "In view of the above, the Acting Commissioner of Police wishes to encourage all residents of Lagos State who have complaints against police action or on any issue, to report to any of the police patrol vehicles which now serve as mini police stations and are parked conspicuously at vantage points across the state or call on the Citizen Complaint Centre established by the present Commissioner of Police through the following cellular phone numbers: 08067945296, 08063025274, 08113615350, 08113683077, 08096283148, 08096283183, 08089781657, 08126404930, 08081426895." culled from Olu famous Mr Olumide's Blog |

Nnamdi Kanu says "I’m Still Entitled to $800m Compensation" Posted: 03 Dec 2017 11:47 PM PST The leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, has said that despite being granted bail by the Federal High Court in Abuja where he is being prosecuted alongside others on charges of treasonable felony, he is still entitled to the $800m compensation. This he said is for his alleged unlawful arrest and detention in 2015. This is contained in his response to the motion filed by Federal Government asking the Community Court of the Economic Community of West African States sitting in Abuja to dismiss a fundamental human rights enforcement suit filed by the IPOB leader. Kanu had filed the suit on March 3, 2016 demanding $800m as compensation from the Federal Government for his alleged unlawful arrest in 2015 and detention. But the Federal Government, through its lawyer, Mrs. Maimuna Shiru, filed its motion on November 13, stating that Kanu having been granted bail by the Federal High Court in Abuja on April 25, 2017, and allegedly jumped bail, the judgment of the ECOWAS Court on the suit would serve no purpose. But Kanu, through his lawyer, Mr. Ifeanyi Ejiofor, objected to the Federal Government's motion contending that granting bail to the IPOB leader was just a partial satisfaction of prayers sought in the suit. He maintained that the ECOWAS Court had the power to grant his client the $800m compensation sought since the IPOB leader's rights had been violated. Ejiofor stated in his written address, "We submit therefore that the court has powers to order for payment of compensatory damages when found that the plaintiff's right has been violated." culled from Olu famous Mr Olumide's Blog |
2019: As Atiku Rejoins PDP, Makarfi says ‘I May Contest’ Posted: 03 Dec 2017 11:22 PM PST Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar on Sunday announced his return to Peoples Democratic Party He made the announcement in a live Facebook broadcast.
Atiku was among notable politicians who left the PDP in 2014 to form an alliance that transformed into the All Progressives Congress. But things have fallen apart. In the broadcast, the former vice-president said in the last two years of President Muhammadu Buhari's administration, three million Nigerians had lost their jobs. According to him, Nigeria needs a non-sectional party to run the Federal Government and not one that panders to regional sentiments. He said he decided to use the Facebook to announce his return to the PDP because he wanted to reach as many "of our young people as possible as I have an important announcement to make about the future of Nigeria." He described youths as the future of the nation. Atiku said, "I have found in my travels across the country that the number one concern of young people is whether they will be able to get a job; for without a job they have no means of sustaining themselves or starting a family. "Without the security of a job, we cannot have security in our country. So without jobs, there is no future for you or for Nigeria. "And I also know as a parent that the older generation is also concerned about jobs for their children and, too often today, for themselves as well." He said he joined the APC because he had hoped that it would improve lives of Nigerians and that he was excited about the party's manifesto to create three million new jobs a year. He lamented that the result had not been the change the people were promised, adding that in the last two years, three million Nigerians had lost their jobs. 'APC has disappointed Nigerians' The former vice-president said the APC-led Federal Government had disappointed Nigerians, particularly youths. He added, "Creating jobs is something I know about as I have created over 50,000 direct jobs and 250,000 indirect jobs in my home state of Adamawa and I also know how the government can create opportunities for jobs. "In the last two years, almost three million Nigerians have lost their jobs and today we have a record 25 per cent of people within the age of 18 and 25 years unemployed. I can see how difficult it is for people to get jobs. "The key to creating jobs is a strong economy and that is what we lack presently. Today, I want to let you know that I am returning home to the PDP as the issues that made me leave it have been resolved and it is clear that the APC has let the people, especially youths, down." "But rather than giving a long political speech on this matter, I thought it would be more helpful to invite you to ask me questions and share with you my answers." I initiated telephone revolution – Atiku Atiku said when he was the vice-president in 1999, he was responsible for deregulating the telecoms sector which he said enabled the country to increase the number of people who could access telephones from less than a million then to over 100 million presently. He said, "This has resulted in the creation of hundreds of thousands of new jobs from the top-up card vendors you see on every street corner to the many new businesses that feed off the mobile phone revolution. "Some of you may know that I was elected as the vice-president under the banner of the PDP, which is the political party I had helped to found some 10 years before. "And some of you may also know that I left the PDP four years ago when I believed it was no longer aligned to the principles of equity, democracy and social justice upon which we had founded it. "We need a party that speaks to national sentiments, not regional sisters with only one mother, which is Nigeria." Atiku also dismissed the statement of the Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, who said he (Atiku) would never be President. "Nobody knows the future other than God and to dictate what the future will be is not within man's purview. Remember that the PDP said it would rule Nigeria for 60 years; but did they? But it is about Nigeria, not power." Reacting to the demand by Nigerians on social media for the scrapping of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the police tagged, |
