SARS Operatives To Undergo New Training

Posted: 05 Dec 2017 03:27 AM PST

Personnel of the police Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) are to undergo a new training, according to the Force Public Relations Officer, Supol Jimoh Moshood.

Supol Moshood said in a statement on Monday that the training was part of the reorganisation of SARS earlier directed by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr Ibrahim Idris.

The directive, according to him, is aimed at repositioning the squad for "more efficiency and effective service delivery to all Nigerians" in accordance with the rule of law and international best practices.

Moshood explained that the training would be organised by the Force in collaboration with some civil society organisations, local and international NGOs and other human rights organisations.

NAN reports that the move followed social media campaign by Nigerians for the proscription of SARS over allegations of human rights abuses across the country.

Through the campaign, which started on Saturday with the hashtag #EndSARS, many Nigerians have accused personnel of the squad of extra-judicial killings and other forms of abuses.

However, Moshood said SARS had been "doing very well in fighting violent crimes such as armed robbery, kidnappings and cattle rustling in the country in recent times".

He noted that this had seen a drastic reduction in incidents of the mentioned violent crimes nationwide.

"However, the IGP has directed the immediate reorganisation of SARS nationwide and instant investigation into all the allegations, complaints and infractions levelled against its personnel.

"In the new arrangement, a Commissioner of Police is now the overall head of the Federal Anti-Robbery Squad nationwide under the Department of Operations, Force Headquarters. Abuja.

"The police zonal commands, state commands and divisions will continue to operate anti-crime units/sections, crime prevention and control squads and teams imperative to prevent and detect crime in their area of responsibilities.

"They are also to maintain other crack squads necessary to sustain law and order and protection of lives and property in their Area of responsibilities (AOR).

"The Federal Anti-Robbery Squad (FSARS) will now exist and operate in the state and zonal commands under the Commissioner of Police (F-SARS) at the Force Headquarters," he said.

Moshood added that a federal SARS Commander of the rank of Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) and not below Superintendent of Police (SP) would be in charge of F-SARS in state and zonal commands across the country.

According to him, all commissioners of police have been directed by the IGP to comply with the directive with immediate effect, and warn their personnel not to pose as SARS operatives.

He added that IGP X-Squad had been mandated to go round the commands and police formations nationwide to ensure strict compliance and apprehend any erring police officer.

Drunken Policeman Kills Father of One in Kogi State

Posted: 05 Dec 2017 02:52 AM PST

Tragedy struck in Ajaokuta town on Sunday after a drunken police officer shot dead a father of one.

The victim, Mohammed Ismail, met untimely death at a rally of one of the chairmanship aspirants in the Ajaokuta LGA, Abdulrahaman Dansabe, at the Local Government Secondary School.

It was reliably gathered that the incident occurred around 2pm while the aspirant, who is a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), was unfolding his plans for the area.

An eyewitness told Punch that the yet-to-be identified policeman, suddenly opened fire and a bullet hit Ismail. The incident caused confusion in the area as those at the venue of the rally ran for safety.

The eyewitness said, "Some people said the policeman acted under the influence of alcohol.

"Our efforts to save the man proved abortive as he died shortly after he was rushed to a nearby hospital."

The victim, who was said to be an HND graduate of the Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja, was later buried around 7.30pm on Sunday.

The state Police PRO, ASP William Aya, said investigation into the incident was on.

Kiss Daniel dragged to court by former label G World Wide Entertainment | Mr Olumide's Blog

Posted: 05 Dec 2017 02:27 AM PST

Nigerian pop star, Anidugbe Oluwatobiloba Daniel, popularly known as Kiss Daniel, has been dragged to court by the management of G-Worldwide Entertainment, for allegedly breaching the seven years artiste management deal he signed with the record label in 2013.

A statement by the label reads

"The attention of G-Worldwide Entertainment Limited ('the Company') has been drawn to acts by Oluwatobiloba Daniel Anidugbe (alias 'Kiss Daniel'), who recently has been making publications on different print media and social media platforms soliciting for bookings to perform songs from his album NEW ERA and EVOLUTION. Mr. Anidugbe executed a 7-year Recording and Artist Management Contract ('the Contract') with the Company in 2013 and which Contract is still subsisting.
"Contrary to the express provisions of the Contract, Mr. Anidugbe has taken steps to appoint a new manager, solicited for bookings, and has continued to negotiate and enter performance agreements in respect of the songs from the album NEW ERA, and EVOLUTION which is set to be released soon containing singles such as YEBA, FOR YOU, SENORITA, SOFA and others, both produced under the Contract, including using the stage name 'Kiss Daniel' without the Company's prior consent and permission.
Further thereto, the Company has approached the Federal High Court, Lagos in suit no. FHC/L/CS/1758/2017 between G-WORLDWIDE ENT. LIMITED Vs OLUWATOBILOBA DANIEL ANIDUGBE to affirm its rights over the intellectual property under the Contract i.e. copyrights over the songs in both albums, and rights over the stage name: 'Kiss Daniel'.

By an application dated 20th November 2017, the Company sought interim orders of injunction, and other further orders as the Court may deem fit to make, against Mr. Anidugbe, retraining the Artiste's further distribution, publication, or performance of these songs, or negotiating or entering any agreement thereof without the consent or permission of G-Worldwide Entertainment Ltd.
The general public and the whole world is hereby put on notice that on the 30th day of November 2017, the Federal High Court made an order that status quo ante bellum under the Contract, be maintained by the parties, pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice filed in the suit.
The import of the Order being that the state under which the parties existed under the Contract should be preserved until the Court makes a determination of the motion on notice filed by the Company. All and any dealings in respect of the upload, distribution, and or performance of any of the songs, as well as the use or exploitation of the name 'Kiss Daniel' can therefore only be entered or made with the prior written consent and permission of the Company as provided under the Contract.
The general public and the whole world is further cautioned that as the matter is now before a Court of law (subjudice), and following the Order to maintain status quo, any unauthorized upload, distribution, exploitation, performance, sales, and use of the songs (from the NEW ERA and EVOLUTION albums), or stage name 'Kiss Daniel', in any show, event, downloading or streaming platform, will be in violation of the Order of the Federal High Court.
Anyone who does or continues to do so shall be liable as an accomplice for contempt of court, and the full weight of the law will be brought against that person as a contemnor. Any person or organization who negotiates, or enters into any agreement with Mr. Anidugbe to engage him on the basis of his presumed rights over the songs in both albums, or the use of the stage name 'Kiss Daniel', does so at his or her own risk and peril." However, as at the time of this report, efforts to reach Kiss Daniel have been futile as he is said to be very busy consolidating plans for his new label, FLYBOI INC.

2019: Perish Your Dreams, MASSOB tells Buhari, Atiku

Posted: 05 Dec 2017 02:22 AM PST

The Movement for the Actualisation of Sovereign State of Biafra on Monday asked President Buhari; former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and others nursing presidential ambition in 2019 to perish their thoughts, saying Nigeria would disintegrate before then.

In a statement made available to our correspondent in Awka, Anambra State by the MASSOB leader, Uchenna Madu, the group said three nations would emerge from Nigeria before 2019.

The statement read, "MASSOB wishes to inform the political gladiators of the Nigerian state that their 2019 political ambitions will not materialise because Nigeria as an entity will not exist beyond the year 2019.

"Before the end of the year 2019, there will be no more Nigeria as a political entity; there will be newborn nations called Biafra, Oduduwa and Arewa republics."

It said President Buhari would be the last president of a " unified' Nigeria.

The group described as a painful irony the way Nigeria retained the name given to her by the colonial masters, adding that countries such as Gold Coast(Ghana) Upper Volta(Burkina Faso) and Tanganyika (Tanzania) immediately after their independence changed their names to reflect indigenous content.

The statement read in part,
"We also wish to inform the voluntary and forced citizens of this failed entity called Nigeria that Mohammed Buhari is the last president of this geographical expression called Nigeria

"As every nation of the universe has its spiritual anchor and stronghold, MASSOB gladly wishes to inform the people of Biafra that the spiritual anchor and stronghold of Nigeria entity has been broken.

"No military might or alliances with Islamic countries will stop the emergence of Biafra soon. MASSOB in collaboration with other pro-Biafra groups in the genuine spirit of Biafra revolution declares that enough is enough."

He added, "The coming together of pro-Biafra groups will multiply our synergies and double our consistent efforts towards Biafra actualisation and restoration through our undying demand and pressure for a referendum that will determine our stake in the Biafran project."

Fuel Queues In Some Major Cities

Posted: 05 Dec 2017 01:57 AM PST

Fuel queues have resurfaced in some Nigerian cities, including Lagos, Ilorin, Benin City and Sokoto.

In Sokoto, marketers have increased the pump price to N150 per litre. Marketers said they had gone on strike in Lagos, which accounted for the queues.

But the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) said it had not increased the pump price.

The marketers said the strike resulted from the failure of the NNPC to grant their demand for reduction in the price of the product.

The members of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) claim that they buy petrol at N142 per litre from depots and the Petroleum Products Association of Nigeria(DAPMAN), a price, which has left them with little or no gains, after adding transportation and other incremental costs.

They said they were planning a major strike from Monday, unless the government averts it.

IPMAN South-West Chairman Debo Ahmed said the queue was as a result of the exorbitant price of the products .

He said marketers might go on strike, should the government fail to order DAPMAN to reduce the price at which they supply fuel to them.

Ahmed said: "The queue in some parts of the country, is a pointer to the fact that major one is coming, in the event the Federal Government is unable to avert it. We( independent marketers) really want the NNPC to resolve the problem between the marketers and DAPMAN once and for all.

We cannot continue to buy fuel at N142 per litre from DAPMAN while NNPC, which remains the only importer of fuel in Nigeria, is selling to DAPMAN at N133. 28 per litre. The margin is too high.''

He added: "If marketers in Lagos are buying fuel at N142 per litre. How much do you think marketers in Ilorin, Kwara State will buy the product, when they add transportation cost to it? The farther the distance, the outlets of the marketers, the higher the cost of transportation.

"In areas such as Benin, Akure, Kaduna, the price of transporting fuel to their desired locations (outlets) would be higher.''

He said marketers were battling paucity of funds, and as such, they are finding it difficult to buy fuel at N142 per litre.

He said marketers were unable to access credit from banks for business.

But the NNPC reiterated that there was no plan to increase fuel price.

In a statement, Ndu Ughamadu, the corporation's Group General Manager, Public Affairs Division, said there was no plan to increase prices at the ex-depot level and pump price ahead of the Yuletide.

Ughamadu said the ex-depot petrol price of N133.38 per litre and pump price of N143/N145 per litre had not changed.

He assured the public that the corporation had enough to ensure seamless supply and distribution of products across the country, especially during the Yuletide.

He urged motorists and other users of petroleum products to disregard trending rumours of an impending fuel price hike.

"The NNPC has the full commitment of all downstream stakeholders, including petroleum marketers and industry unions, to cooperate in achieving zero fuel scarcity this season and beyond.

"We enjoin motorists not to engage in panic buying or indulge in the dangerous practice of stocking petroleum products in jerry cans at home.

"The Petroleum Products Marketing Company and NNPC Retail Limited are fully geared up to ensure that motorists enjoy uninterrupted access to petrol throughout the nation,'' Ughamadu said.

Demand for anal bleaching soars by 23% | Mr Olumide's Blog

Posted: 05 Dec 2017 01:57 AM PST

Demand for anal bleaching has risen by about a fifth in the past year as women 'feel under pressure to look like porn stars', figures suggest.

The trend was sparked after celebrities – including Sophie Kasaeit, Charlotte Crosby and Kourtney Kardashian – revealed they have had the procedure.

It involves lightening the colour of the skin around the anus for cosmetic purposes, to make it more uniform with the surrounding area.

Some treatments are applied in a salon by a cosmetic technician – including laser therapy – and others are sold as cream that can be applied at home.

Anal bleaching hit the headlines when Marnie Simpson bleached Sophie Kasaei's bottom on Geordie Shore back in April.

Now a leading medical aesthetic clinic based in London has reported a large increase in the number of women – and sometimes men – asking for the procedure.

Sheri Johnson, clinic manager at HB Health of Knightsbridge, told Daily Mail:
'We have seen a rise of 23 per cent in the past year at the clinic. Laser therapy is the most popular, accounting for around 95 per cent and cream treatments about five per cent.
'It's predominately women who come for the bleaching but we have had a few men in this year too.
'There's not one particular age group, we get young women right through to older women.
'I think women are feeling under pressure from their partners to emulate the look of adult stars that are seen in porn.'
Anal bleaching by laser costs £500 a session and most people need a few.
Ms Johnson said that laser bleaching comes with small risks of infection and scarring and stressed it was important to have it at in a professional clinic setting.

You Can Never Satisfy Nigerians – President Buhari

Posted: 05 Dec 2017 01:32 AM PST

President Muhammadu Buhari has said when it comes to the fight against corruption, one can never satisfy Nigerians.

He said this in Abidjan, Cote d' Ivoire, during an interactive session with Nigerian community, ahead of his participation at the just concluded 5th African Union-European Union (AU-EU) Summit.

Buhari's administration has been accused of being selective and political in its anti-corruption war with some suggesting that for it to succeed, there is need for some fundamental reforms in the system and the way the anti-graft agencies are being run to make them more effective and efficient.

The President who recalled how ruthless he was as a military Head of State, by locking those suspected to have stolen public funds in prison until they proved they were innocent, said the democratic dispensation does not allow him such liberty.

He said that compared to his first coming in the 1980s, today everyone is seen to be innocent until proven guilty and yet Nigerians are accusing his government of being slow in the fight against corruption.

According to President Buhari, "I'm assuring you that the good news you hear from home is the same that you hear from all over the world that we are not doing too badly in trying to secure the country, in trying to improve the economy, to get jobs for people and in trying to deal with corruption.

"I have said it that this is my second time like Gen. Obasanjo. When I came as a young man and in uniform, I arrested former ministers and governors and put them in Kirirkiri. All of you know Kirikiri. I told them that they are guilty until they can prove themselves innocent and it didn't bother me because I was a youth and in uniform so I didn't care about anybody.

"But now that I am back, everybody is innocent until I can prove them guilty. And at the same time the same Nigerians are saying we are too slow. So what can you do really? You can only try but I am telling you that you can never satisfy our people back home.

"You know, when I was young and ruthless as a soldier I did what I did, somebody came, locked me up and gave them back their money and their houses. I went back into politics and after trying three times and ending up in Supreme Court, the fourth time God agreed and here I am.

"But when I came, what I found out is terrible. It is absolutely terribly but I'll keep on doing my best because I volunteered to come, I have come, I have met what was on the ground and I hope I will make an impression."

The President regretted that during the oil boom era no meaningful infrastructure was built hence his administration is struggling to keep its campaign promises with the fall of oil price to as low as $28 per barrel from an average of $100 between 1999 and 2014.

According to Buhari, "We are lucky in Nigeria that we have been able to survive 2016. Honestly, I told some people close to me that I was thinking of which country to run to if things got out of hand.

"Between 1999 and 2014, I have said it several times in Nigeria, Nigeria has never got so much revenue like it did at that time.

But then when we came the price of oil went down to $28 per barrel from an average of $100 per barrel at the production rate of 2.1 million barrel per day.
So multiply 2.1 million by $100, that is what Nigeria was getting from 1999 to 2014. But when we came the price came down to $28. I went to Central Bank to look for money and they said there was no money, only debts.

"And the infrastructure – the roads, the rail, power that you have been talking about, nothing was absolutely done. So really, God hears the prayers of His servants and the last three raining seasons were good. We were very lucky I would have absconded.

"I mean how could we have faced Nigerians and tell them this is what you have been earning from 2.1 million barrels per day from 1999-2014 multiply by $100 it even went up to $143 and then came down to about $70, $80 but when we came it fell to $28, then to $37 and then oscillating between $30 and $50. So it was amazing but God came with His help."

40 children rescued from 'witch doctor's ' Abuja torture chamber | Mr Olumide's Blog

Posted: 05 Dec 2017 01:02 AM PST

Operatives of the National Agency for Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, NAPTIP, and the Defence Intelligence Agency, DIA, weekend, rescued about 40 children from a torture chamber.

The chamber, operated in Abuja by a witch doctor, is where witches and wizards are exorcised.
According to sources, the children, aged between five and seven years, are taken to the said witch doctor, one Mr. Ikoh, at the Torture Clinic in Mararaba area of Abuja, by parents and guardians after they have been hypnotised by persons suspected to be working in partnership with the witch doctor.

The children are then chained and tortured into confessing that they are witches/wizards, after the parents or guardians of the children would have been made to part with sums of money ranging from N50,000 to N100,000.

The sources said the alleged witch doctor has raked in nothing less than N10 million from unsuspecting members of the public within the last two months alone.

It was further gathered that Ikoh maltreat the children to the point of death, sometimes through starvation and flogging.

Ikoh, who hails from Akoh village in Nasarawa State, has been handed over to the Police and is said to have been in the business for several months.

Officials of NAPTIP, while confirming the story, noted that the rescued children are being moved to a facility where they will undergo medical tests to ascertain the level of torture they were subjected to. The impact of their experience on their mental state will also be acsertained before working out how they can be reunited with their families.

Boy Crippled by Boko Haram Returns Walking... says 'I want to be a police officer'

Posted: 05 Dec 2017 12:52 AM PST

There was joy at the arrival terminal of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja on Monday as family members and well-wishers gathered to receive Ali Ahmadu, a six-year-old boy from Chibok in Borno State, who was left paralysed by Boko Haram insurgents.

About three months ago, Ahmadu was flown to Dubai for a corrective spinal cord surgery after he was overrun by insurgents' motorcycles when they invaded Chibok community in April 2014.

But on stepping out of the arrival terminal, Ahmadu, who was being moved around on a wheelchair some months ago at the airport, ran to the waiting arms of his uncle, who hugged him.

It was gathered that Dickens Sanomi Foundation, a charity organisation based in Abuja, paid $48,000 with the support of Senator President Bukola Saraki for Ahmadu's medical trip after the Global Initiative for Peace, Love and Care organised a fund raiser for the child's corrective surgery.

Speaking on behalf of the GIPLC, Mr. Nuhu Kwajafah, said, "Ahmadu was immobile and fast deteriorating, physically and mentally, from 2014 till the first quarter of this year when the GIPLC made contact with him. The organisation facilitated the relevant examination and laboratory tests for assessment and proper medical attention.

"The results revealed that he couldn't access the quality care required to realign him towards a better quality of life, hence the decision to make prerequisite arrangements to take him abroad."

Kwajafah said the GIPLC was committed to Ahmadu's post-surgery well-being and had received confirmation from Dickens Sanomi Foundation to support the child, as well as provide him scholarship.

In a similar development, the Abuja Breakfast Club donated food items to less privileged persons at the Victorine Home for Children in Gwarinpa, one of the satellite towns in the Federal Capital Territory.

The President, ABC, Mr. Finnian Allagh, while making the donations, said, "The objective of setting up the club is aimed at giving back to our society, to advance brotherhood, increase the level of friendship and most importantly, impact positively on the community we reside in. We hope not to just impact our community but promote brotherliness among Nigerians.

"We will provide scholarship but we are starting with charity first. We believe that in the process of giving to them we will identify the smart children that can be sponsored because there is a framework already on the ground to actualise this."

Libya: “No brother in the jungle” By Reuben Abati | Mr Olumide's Blog

Posted: 05 Dec 2017 12:47 AM PST

Arab countries have a tradition of slavery dating back to centuries. This has persisted despite the existence of international conventions and legal frameworks classifying slavery as a crime against humanity. The current situation in Libya, involving slavery and human trafficking, has been brought to global attention because we now live in the age of communication where nothing good or bad can be hidden forever.  But the situation is far worse than has been depicted.  The Nigerians who have been brought back from Libya have told heart-rending stories of woe and misery:  how they were sold into slavery by the Arabs and by their own Nigerian brothers and sisters, how they were subjected to all forms of indignity including rape, extortion, and torture, and how living in Libya is now the equivalent of a trip to hell.  Quite a number of issues deserve closer interrogation to enable us appreciate the depth of this crisis.

The Libyan story today is a sorry advertisement for the abuse of NATO and the failure of the American foreign policy process. The multinational coalition that intervened in the Libyan civil war in 2011 and made the removal of Libyan strongman Muammar Ghadaffi its primary objective must by now be full of regrets. It is instructive that former US President Barack Obama has described the failure to think through the consequences of that intervention as the "worst mistake" of his Presidency. The character of that mistake lies in the fact that NATO and other forces despite the division among the global powers on the question of Libya, saw the internal crisis in Libya as an opportunity to deal with a man who had been labeled at various times as the "mad dog of the Middle East", and who was gradually expressing "imperialist ambitions" – "the king of kings of Africa" with a pan-African vision. NATO's intervention was an act of vendetta, an orchestrated punishment for a man who had been declared guilty of dictatorship. It was most convenient for the multinational coalition, with its eyes fixed on Libya's oil, to support the rebels. The result is the mayhem that has overtaken Libya since the fall of Ghadaffi.

Under Ghadaffi's watch, Libya was a stable, organized society.  Following the bloodless coup that led to the flight into exile of King Idris 1 in 1969, the new leader, Muammar Ghadaffi, not only abolished the monarchy, he embarked on a mission of unifying the various clans under the umbrella of Libyan nationalism. He seized control of the country's oil infrastructure from Western interests and redistributed wealth by creating a welfare system. The average Libyan had access to free housing, free medical care, and free education. The government provided infrastructure, and although Ghadaffi soon became a practical dictator, he managed to grow a sense of Libyan identity and unity.

Seeing himself as a pan-Africanist, he encouraged closer relations with other African nations. Many Africans from Egypt, Sudan, Nigeria and other African countries lived and worked in Libya, even if many of them took the menial jobs that an average Libyan would not touch – at that time. The country's foreign reserve was about $200 billion. Its life expectancy and literacy rates were among the highest in Africa and the Arab world. The average Libyan enjoyed many opportunities except the freedom to be different or query the government and the Constitution. Those who removed and killed Ghadaffi didn't realize how much of a potentially divided country Libya was, and the extent of Ghadaffi's efforts in managing the centrifugal tendencies.

After Ghadaffi, Libya imploded. Anything is possible in Libya today because there is no responsible government in charge. People are resorting to self-help. Anybody that is armed exercises authority and does anything to make money. The welfare state has collapsed, criminality is widespread: kidnapping, slavery, violence, the economy is in shambles. Clannish and sectarian differences now predominate. The country is drifting. Most of the people are like prisoners, including those who are gainfully employed. In the absence of a government, the international community appears helpless. This is the setting for the chaos and the humanitarian crisis that has overtaken that country.

Libya remains nonetheless, a major transit point and exit route for many Africans seeking to escape illegally into Europe.  Libya, a country whose land area is almost twice the size of Nigeria, has over 2,000 kilometres of Mediterranean coastline from the Egyptian border to the Tunisian border. Frustrated by the objective conditions in their own countries, in the form of crippling poverty, misgovernance, unemployment and the difficulty of getting a visa or being able to buy a ticket to Europe, many Africans, particularly West Africans opt for the cheaper, albeit illegal option of sneaking into Europe through the desert and across the Mediterranean sea, with Libya and Algeria as the most popular exit points. This has always been a risky venture, but the traffic continues to grow. It is also an organized criminal operation involving gangs at home, and along the route. Nigerians constitute the majority of these illegal migrants.

Organized by a criminal gang at home, they usually travel through Niger, which is a contiguous, ECOWAS country. In Niger, another gang of human traffickers, mostly Touaregs take over from their Nigerian partners to take the illegal migrants across the desert to Libya. Only about 60-70% eventually make it to Libya. Many die along the way because of the harsh desert conditions and they are buried in the sand. Those who eventually make it to Libya are not necessarily lucky.  They may be kidnapped at the border by rampaging Arab militants, turned into slaves, and asked to contact their families back home to pay ransom.  The men are beaten; the women are raped.  The images that we have seen from Libyan slave camps are sad. Arab racism has been an issue and violence towards foreigners is not necessarily new in Libya, but it is getting worse because now the issue is not strictly racism but the people's desperation for survival in a state that failed.

It is estimated that about 500, 000 – 700, 000 Nigerians are trapped in Libya. The Obasanjo government once had to repatriate over 17, 000 Nigerians from that country. In the light of recent developments, the Buhari government has also repatriated over 1, 000 Nigerians from Libya in 2017 alone, but there is no hope that all of them can be brought back home.  Many will like to return home, but they don't even have the means to transport themselves to the evacuation points. Those that are not enslaved are still hoping to make enough money to be able to cross to Europe. They wash cars, work as farm hands or as security guards, or prostitutes, and they get exposed to all the dangers imaginable.  The few who manage to make the final journey to Europe are not always lucky either: they could perish in the sea like the 26 Nigerian girls who recently drowned while trying to cross into Italy.

The saddest part of it all is that Nigerians are also involved in the trafficking and dehumanization of their own compatriots. In a shocking account by one Sunday Anyaegbunam, a Libyan returnee, who left Nigeria in April 2017, with his wife, we are told that: "The Nigerians selling people in Libya are more wicked than many of the Arabs. I have never seen people so heartless as the Nigerians who bought and sold me. There are many of them in Agadez and Sabha, who are making so much money from selling their own people. But there are other West Africans doing the business too. When you approach them and say "please, my brother, help me". They would tell you: "No brother in the jungle".  Libya is indeed now a jungle in the hands of armed militants, the Islamic State, tribal gangs, and an interim leadership authority. The jungle is a dangerous place: which is why it is surprising that more Nigerians would prefer to abandon their own country and go to the jungle.

About 70% of the Libyan returnees are reportedly from Edo State, and in general most of them  are from Edo, Delta, Imo, Anambra and Rivers states. But this is not enough reason for this problem to be treated as Southern Nigerian or Christian. This should not be about North or South, or Christian vs Muslim. It is unacceptable for every Nigerian issue to be reduced to this kind of division, the same way some Nigerians tend to dismiss Boko Haram as a Northern problem. This is a crisis that affects all of us. It is embarrassing that Nigerians are deserting their own country and flocking to Europe in droves despite the risks of illegal migration. In the 70s, many Nigerians were proud and happy to live at home, but since the introduction of austerity measures in the 80s and the gradual collapse of the Nigerian economy, a new kind of economy has since developed around dangerous choices.

The consequences are not limited to the tales from Libya. There are Nigerians in jail or on the death row across the world, in China, Thailand and the Middle East. We need to have a strong policy in place to check illegal migration. Massive enlightenment campaigns should be organized to educate the populace about the associated dangers. There is an assignment here for the National Orientation Agency (NOA), a strategic agency, which has been relatively sleepy since 2015.  Our youths should be told that there is no safe route to Europe through the desert or a boat ride.

Everybody should wake up – government, civil society, and all the people who have abdicated their responsibilities at the level of the family unit.  The human trafficking gangs in the country especially in the identified major centres should be tracked, identified and sanctioned.  Government should create a conducive environment for our youths to make a living at home.  Government has a constitutional responsibility to empower all Nigerians and to guarantee their security and welfare.  Nigeria should also engage the government of Niger. What can we do to prevent illegal migration through Niger? This has to be a joint responsibility between Nigeria and Niger. Although Chad is not in ECOWAS, quite a number of Nigerians also travel through that route. Joint border patrol and exchange of useful intelligence between Nigeria and her neighbors would be advisable.

The Federal Government of Nigeria and its agencies, the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Edo State Government and the International Organization on Migration, CNN, Pastor Temitope Joshua's The Synagogue, Church of All Nations (SCOAN) and every other group or agency that has responded decently and responsibly to the plight of the Nigerians from Libya, and the evil of slavery in Libya, deserve to be commended. In spite of the deviousness of a minority who earn a living by dehumanizing their fellow human beings, it is enheartening to see that warm blood still flows in the heart of mankind. The Edo State government has put in place perhaps the most comprehensive rehabilitation programme for the Libya returnees: counseling, accommodation, vocational training, and take off grants after training.

These are worthy steps, but they are at best short-term. The long-term measures for all governments should be good governance, public enlightenment and concerted international action against slavery and all forms of cruelty and inhumanity.

Okorocha Swears In Sister As Commissioner for Happiness

Posted: 05 Dec 2017 12:42 AM PST

Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo has sworn in 28 new commissioners and 27 transition committee chairmen for the 27 local government councils in the state.

One of the commissioners sworn in by the governor is his biological sister, Mrs. Ogechi Ololo (nee Okorocha). She is now the state's Commissioner for Happiness and Couples' Fulfillment.

Ololo, who is married to Chuks, an engineer, was the All Progressives Congress' candidate into the House of Representatives for the Owerri Federal Constituency seat in 2015 and she has served in various capacities since Okorocha became the state governor in 2011.

She had, before her new appointment, served as her brother's Deputy Chief of Staff and Special Adviser on Domestic Matters.

Swearing in the new commissioners and the Transition Committee Chairmen on Monday at the Imo International Convention Centre, Owerri, the governor charged them to leave their marks in their respective ministries and local governments.

He charged them to prove their worth in the service of the state and her people. He urged them to see themselves as men and women on a rescue mission.

The governor added that they had come to be part of the success story of his administration.

Okorocha said, "You are the privileged group that has the opportunity to make names for yourselves. I want to remind all of you that this appointment is not business as usual. We shall not tolerate any sharp practice or corruption of any type. Neither shall we accept indolence or laziness. You have been called to duty to help us to achieve our vision in the Rescue Mission Project.
"At this moment, I charge you all to be good ambassadors of the Rescue Mission wherever you find yourselves. To the Transition Committee Chairmen, you must ensure that ongoing projects must be completed especially the schools, chapels etc."

He reiterated that what his administration had achieved so far had exceeded all that the previous administrations in the state, both civilian and military put together, had achieved.

I Was With My Boyfriend, I Wasn't Abducted – says Housewife

Posted: 04 Dec 2017 10:07 PM PST

Mrs. Fatima Muhammed, 18, and Hafsat Adamu, 15, who were allegedly abducted by a yet-to-be-identified criminal, have been rescued by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Nasarawa State Command.

The state commandant of the NSCDC, Mr. Mamud Gidado-Fari, said the victims were rescued last Friday at Line Supper Cinema in the Lafia area of the state.

According to him, one Ibrahim Nasir reported that his wife had been kidnapped...

Gidado-Fari explained that the housewife was found at the kidnapper's hideout, where she had been locked up for a week by the suspect.

"We forced our way into the room and found the woman alongside a 15-year-old girl, Hasat Adamu," he said. The motive of the abductor had yet to be determined.

The commandant said, "The nature of the case is what we are trying to investigate because as it is, we don't know whether the motive of the abductor was ransom or for ritual."

But Fatima said she was not abducted, saying she was at her lover's place when some NSCDC operatives broke into the room and whisked her away.

She said: "I was with my sick mother from morning till evening and when it was time for me to go home I decided to see my old boyfriend, because I didn't have money for transport.

"I had to stay till the following day because it was late and before I knew what was happening, I saw NSCDC (operatives) breaking into my boyfriend's room and that was how I was arrested.

"I am a married woman, but I left my matrimonial home because I have been having quarrels with my husband ever since we got married. My husband had told me not to go anywhere there is crisis and there was never a day I disobeyed him," Fatima stated.

6 Unintended Ways You Are Destroying Your Smartphone

Posted: 04 Dec 2017 10:07 PM PST

Smartphones keep us connected, informed and much more. For many of us, they have become more than a simple tech tool, so we should probably take better care of them than we do.

Instead of treating them as if they are toys that can be replaced, we should handle them as if our lives and jobs depend on them. Nonetheless, there are certain things we unintentionally or unknowingly do to our smartphones.

Jumia Travel discusses them.

Neglecting malware
Malware doesn't only infect desktop computers. It could do even worse damage to your smartphone. This is because smartphone malware can track your location and steal highly sensitive data as well. It is essential that you take caution when installing apps on your smartphone.

Packing it full
Unless you use an Android phone that accommodates SD card, you can quickly fill up your devices until they won't work. Without enough storage space, the device may either become sluggish or won't function. Monitor the space on your device and if possible, use SD cards.

Always leaving it on
Smartphones don't rest because they are always on even at night. In fact, in many cases, these devices work more than our desktops and laptops. So, make it a habit to reboot it, turn it off at night or shut it down for 30 minutes.

Exposing it to heat and cold
Exposing your device to heat and cold weather conditions can be damaging. Therefore, you should be very conscious where you leave your smartphone.

Keeping your smartphone in your pocket
You don't want to keep your phone in the back pocket of your trousers or jeans. This might damage or break the device. With your body pressure, the phone might bend or break into two while you're sitting. If you have to keep your phone in your pocket, it should be the hind pocket.

Rooting improperly
One of the ways to take control of your device is to root it. Rooting is a bit complicated and should be done by a professional. However, if you decide to do it yourself, there is a high chance of incomplete rooting which may cause your phone to malfunction.
