Family Sues Police For Torturing Man To Death Posted: 18 Apr 2017 02:46 AM PDT The Irinyemi family in the Epe area of Lagos has filed a N500m suit against Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, for the alleged extrajudicial killing of a family member, Oyetomi, in a cell of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad in Ikeja, Lagos.
Also joined in the suit filed at the Federal High Court in Lagos is the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni.
Dairo, a cousin to the deceased, who filed the suit on behalf of the family, said Oyetomi was arrested at home in Epe on January 15, 2017 by policemen, who claimed to be searching for some suspected kidnappers in the area.
The younger brother of the deceased, Damilola, who deposed to an affidavit in support of the suit, averred that despite informing policemen at SARS office that the deceased had a terminal heart disease and that they should not maltreat him, the operatives turned a deaf ear.
"All the medical reports showing the various tests conducted on him to show that he truly had a terminal disease were shown to the respondents to prove that he was not a kidnapper as alleged, all to no avail.
"My brother (Oyetomi Irinyemi) who, as a result of his ill health could not withstand the severe torture, eventually died in the respondents' custody towards the end of January 2017," Damilola stated.
The family's lawyer, Mr. Adebowale Bayo-Philip, is seeking a court order directing the police to immediately release Oyetomi's corpse to them and for the police to pay N500m as damages for unlawfully torturing Oyetomi to death.
The lawyer also wants the court to order the immediate release of one Ikuomola Adeyemi, who was arrested by the police alongside Oyetomi.

Orphanage Trains 2 Orphans Till University Graduation Posted: 18 Apr 2017 02:16 AM PDT The management of Christ Foundation Orphanage in Kuje, Abuja, says it has produced 2 graduates and 5 undergraduates presently at different course levels in universities.
Mr Gabriel Okuta, the proprietor of the faith-based home said this when some group of women paid the management of the home a courtesy visit to donate gift items to commemorate Easter.
He said one of the orphans graduated as a psychologist from Ekpoma University, Edo and she had been posted for her National Youth Service programme.
He said the other graduate studied Education Management at the University of Abuja, noting that there were 47 children presently in the home.
He called on Nigerians to help the home by providing beddings, food stuffs and other items that could make life easy for them.
"Finance has been our major constraint, we need a school bus and we hope to finish the six blocks of classroom, running the home of about 47 children is a challenge,'' he said.
Okuta also noted that the children at the orphanage were faced with health challenges, calling on Nigerians to help.
He said the orphanage often got their children through partnership with police, adding that some abandoned children seen by the police were often brought to the orphanage for proper care.
Joseph Gabriel, an orphan who referred to Okuta as his parent, said he would like to be a soldier when he grew up.
"I am now in primary two, Mr and Mrs Gabriel Okuta are my parents and I want to be a soldier so that I can help people,'' he said.
Also Peculiar Gabriel, an orphan, said she would want to be a teacher in future to make people learn how to read.
Christ Foundation Orphanage is a registered NGO established in 2004 to ensure that every child under its care acquires basic education and outstanding socio-cultural background.

Vigilantes Beat Businessman To Death For "Stealing" Dryer Posted: 18 Apr 2017 01:46 AM PDT Two members of the Vigilante Service of Ogun State (VSO), Ismaila Jimoh (aka Bintin) and Hassan Olatunde, have been arrested in connection with the death of a 28-year-old businessman, Tayo Olatunbosun.
Jimoh and Olatunde were said to have apprehended Olatunbosun in the Adiyan area of Ogun State on Saturday for allegedly stealing a hairdryer.
They reportedly beat the businessman with charms.
The vigilantes later took him to the Agbado Police Station around 10pm.
It was gathered that the police released Olatunbosun on bail. He was subsequently admitted to a hospital in the community, where he gave up the ghost on Sunday.
In the wake of the death, angry youths, who claimed the victim was returning from a party when he was arrested, took to the street and vandalised the VSO office.
The mob also reportedly set four motorcycles ablaze.
It was learnt that a combined team of operatives of the Agbado division and the Area Command, Sango, was deployed in the area to restore peace.
A resident, Bashiru Irewole, told Punch that residents were pained by Olatunbosun's death, urging the state government to curtail the excesses of the vigilance group.
He said, "Contrary to the stealing allegation, the man was returning from a party when members of the VSO stopped him. They seriously tortured him. He eventually died yesterday (Sunday) in the afternoon. He traded in accessories such as phones and laptops. He was not a thief. They just wasted his life.
"His friends attacked the VSO office. They burnt a motorcycle in front of the office and moved to the Olomowewe area in Adiyan, where they burnt three motorcycles parked by the roadside. There was confusion everywhere.
"Through the intervention of the police, the situation was brought under control on Sunday evening. Policemen have been patrolling the community."
Another resident, who did not want his name in print, said there might have been a disagreement between Olatunbosun and the vigilantes prior to the incident.
"Those that killed him must be brought to book. I don't think they beat him because he stole the dryer or not.
"They probably had a disagreement with him before now and they decided to deal with him. They beat him with charms and later took him to the station." A policeman said the hairdryer purportedly recovered from Olatunbosun was taken to the station.
"By the time the vigilantes brought him to the station with the dryer, he had been seriously injured.
"He was released to go and treat himself, but he died in the hospital," the source added.
The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Abimbola Oyeyemi, said the suspects were being investigated for murder and would be charged to court afterwards.

Easter Tragedy In Lagos: 7 Killed, 19 Injured In Accidents Posted: 18 Apr 2017 12:46 AM PDT No fewer than seven people lost their lives on Monday in 2 separate accidents in the Gbagada and Surulere areas of Lagos.
While two passengers died and 14 sustained varying degree of injuries in the Gbagada crash, five died and five others were injured in the Surulere incident.
It was learnt that the Gbagada accident happened after a commercial bus had a head-on collision with a cab at about 3pm.
Officials of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency rescued the 14 survivors and rushed them to the Gbagada General Hospital and the Trauma Centre, Ikeja.
The General Manager of LASEMA, Mr. Adeshina Tiamiyu, who confirmed the tragedy, noted that the deceased were taken to the Lagos Mainland Hospital mortuary.
He said, "We received a distress call about the accident at about 3pm. It happened around Gbagada bus stop, inward Anthony.
"Preliminary investigation conducted at the scene revealed that a Volkswagon bus had a head-on collision with a Mazda taxi.
"Fourteen persons were rescued by emergency responders and taken to the Gbagada General Hospital and the Trauma Centre, as they sustained varying degree of injuries.
"Two lives were lost and their remains were moved by the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit to the Lagos Mainland Hospital mortuary. The damaged vehicles were recovered with the help of our towing truck for free flow of traffic in the area."
In the Surulere incident, which occurred around 6pm at Funsho Williams Avenue, five passengers lost their lives after a commercial bus burst into flames.
A witness, Rasaq Amao, who spoke with Punch on the phone, said he was playing football inside the National Stadium when he saw smokes billowing into the sky.
"Around 6pm, I suddenly saw heavy smokes billowing into the sky and left with some friends. I traced the smokes to the under bridge area, where a commercial bus was burning," he said.
Amao stated that four persons were brought out dead from the bus, while other passengers were rescued and rushed to a hospital.
"I saw four dead bodies. People assisted in rescuing some passengers. They have been taken to a hospital. I learnt that the fire was caused by mechanical faults."
Another witness, who identified himself only as Ola, said LASEMA officials battled to put out the fire, adding that the accident caused a traffic jam on the road.
An emergency worker, who was at the scene, said five people died in the accident.
The bus was descending the bridge inwards the Iponri barracks when the accident happened.
"Five people lost their lives, including three adult females, one adult male and a child. They were all burnt beyond recognition," he added.
The LASEMA boss, Tiamiyu, who also confirmed the casualty figure, advised motorists, especially commercial bus drivers, to always be safety-conscious.
He added that the accidents would have been avoided if the drivers complied with traffic rules.

Ikoyi Recovered Billions: EFCC Invites Ex-Governor, Others Posted: 18 Apr 2017 12:46 AM PDT *How NIA got property where $43.4m was found Detectives are to question a former governor and some high-profile owners of apartments in the now controversial Osborne Towers, Ikoyi, Lagos where $43.4million was recovered.
Also recovered were £27,000 and N23m cash. Besides, EFCC has identified how the controversial apartment 7B, where the $43.4m was kept, was acquired. The EFCC has intensified investigation into roles played by some apartment owners and tenants on how the cash was brought into the Towers. Accorging to The Nation, the anti-graft agency is said to be suspecting that some owners or tenants may have been complicit in the matter. A source said: "The more we investigate this $43.4m haul, the more we get fresh facts. It has become imperative to interact with some owners or tenants of apartments in the Towers. "We have invited a former governor and other high-profile owners and tenants for interaction. It is just to ask a few questions on whether or not they were aware of such movement of cash. "We have clues linking some occupants of the Towers to the cash haul. And in line with sections 16 and 17 of the EFCC (Establishment Act) 2004, we are inviting these landlords or tenants. "Unless we get to the root of this case, Nigerians may not know the truth or otherwise about the cash. We are not saying that those invited are guilty of any infraction or having link with the $43.4million but we need to hear from them – in line with the ongoing profiling of those in the Towers." There are indications that the EFCC had been able to trace how the controversial 7B apartment, where the $43.4m was kept, was acquired. Another source said detectives discovered that the 7B apartment was bought in the name of a company allegedly owned by the wife of a senior government official. "Since investigation is still ongoing, we will not release the identity of the owner of the company. Doing so might jeopardise investigation," the source said, adding that the EFCC had interacted with "some people from the company." A National Intelligence Agency (NIA) source said of the apartment: "What happened was that because of the nature of the covert operations which the apartment will be used for, it was necessary to manage the process well." Only the Deed of Assignment was acquired by Thabis Ventures Limited on behalf of NIA. "And immediately the process for the purchase of the apartment was completed, the ownership was clearly stated in the name of NIA. All the papers are reflecting NIA too, he said, adding: "The title document is available for anyone to verify."
