How True? Gwarzo Pocketed Over N100m From SEC as DG

Posted: 26 Oct 2017 04:25 AM PDT

Mr. Mounir Gwarzo, director-general of Securities and Exchange Commission, allegedly got himself a severance package of N104m from the same commission shortly after he was named DG in 2015.

He was an executive commissioner at SEC when former President Goodluck Jonathan appointed him to lead the commission on May 22, 2015.

Surprisingly, on assuming office as DG, he allegedly paid himself the hefty package as entitlement for being an executive commissioner for just two and a half years.

In a petition to the house of representatives seen by The Cable, Gwarzo was said to have demanded a severance package entitled to a commissioner immediately he assumed office.

Despite the opposition mounted by the acting head of SEC legal department, Frana Chuwuogo, Gwarzo allegedly received over N104 million as benefits of his former position.

On assumption of office as the DG of the Commission, Mr. Gwarzo immediately requested that the sum of N104,851,154.94 (One Hundred and Four Million, Eight Hundred and Fifty-One Thousand, One Hundred and Fifty-Four Naira and Ninety-Four Kobo), be paid to him as severance package for the cessation of his appointment as Executive Commissioner of the Commission," the petition read.

"The requested severance package in the sum of N104,851,154.94 (One Hundred and Four Million, Eight Hundred and Fifty-One Thousand, One Hundred and Fifty-Four Naira and Ninety-Four Kobo), was paid by the Commission into Mr. Gwarzo's bank account, held with Guarantee Trust Bank PLC, with account number 0023868895.

"Mr. Gwarzo received the above stated payment of a severance package in total disregard of the opinion of Mr. Frana Chukwuogo, the Acting Head of the Commission's Legal Department, who clearly stated, in accordance with best practices, that a severance payment can only be paid to an employee of the Commission who has concluded his or her service and has completely disengaged from the Commission and not to an employee who has been promoted within the Commission and has not severed his employment with the Commission."

The petition said the SEC DG had been awarding contracts to his family members and friends, in violation of the rules guiding the commission.

It said Gwarzo, his family members and certain directors of the commission were shareholders and directors in companies "used to carry out illegal transactions"

Details of the "illegality" were stated, with at least four different accounts said to be traced to him.

"Mr. Gwarzo and two of his relatives are Directors of Outbound Investment Ltd. (the Company). Since Mr. Gwarzo assumed office as DG of the Commission, the Company has been the sole supplier of diesel to the Commission," the petition read.

"The Company has also supplied air conditioners to the Lagos Zonal office of the Commission, as well as supplied fridge to the Commission. See Appendix BI attached hereto.

"Payments made by the Commission to the Company for contracts executed can be verified from the Company's bank account held with United Bank for Africa Plc, with account number 1016723428.

"In addition, the Company has executed more contracts for the Commission which are not listed in Appendix B1, however these contracts can be verified from the Commission's accounting records.

"Mr. Gwarzo is the DG of the Commission is a Director of Medusa Investments Limited (the Company). The only other Director of the Company is Khadija Mustapher, who is also the wife of the DG of the Commission. See Appendix B3 attached hereto.

"The Company has actively been used by Mr. Gwarzo, as a shell to carry out illegal transactions as is verifiable from the frequent transactions carried out through the Company's bank account held with Guaranty Trust Bank Plc, with Account Number 0023953920. Mr. Gwarzo is a signatory to the said Company account. See Appendix B1 attached hereto.

"Mr. Haris Haliru Gwarzo, the younger brother of the DG of the Commission, is the Sole proprietor of Northwind Environmental Services (the Company). The Company has been engaged by the Commission to clean the Commission's Kano Zonal Office, since the inception of Mr. Gwarzo's tenure as the DG of SEC. See Appendixes B1 and B4 attached hereto.

"Payments made by the Commission to the Company for contracts executed, can be verified from the Company's bank account with Diamond Bank Plc, with Account Number 0095179297."

Five other companies allegedly used for personal gains were listed by the petitioner.

Gwarzo could not be reached for comments. SEC spokesman, Naif Abdulsalam, did not reply a text.

"Give Me Full Protection and I Will Expose All The Secrets" – Maina to Buhari

Posted: 26 Oct 2017 04:25 AM PDT

The man in the eye of the storm, Abdulrasheed Maina, has explained that he went into hiding to save his life from "powerful thieves" in the corridors of power who vowed to silence him.

He said their anger is that he has the effrontery to ask former Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, to stop multi-billion naira monthly allocations being shared by the thieves under the guise of paying pensioners.

Maina, who spoke to Berekete Family, an Abuja-based Radio Show anchored by Ahmed Isa, said he was ready to come out from hiding to spill the beans with relevant documents if President Buhari would provide him adequate security.

The former pension boss recalled that his car was shot at three times and the windows shattered when he was returning from a meeting with former President Goodluck Jonathan and Okonjo-Iweala where they discussed about the money recovered by his task force.

According to him, what saved him from the attack was that Jonathan had earlier directed that he should be given a bulletproof car after he had complained to him about strange text messages, which threatened his life.

Maina denied stealing pension money, saying his task force did not operate accounts and challenged anyone with proof that he was given any government money to present the proof to Nigerians.

His words: "To start with, I did not take anybody's one kobo and nobody has ever given me one kobo in Nigeria. Nobody has ever given me budget; nobody has ever given our office N10. The Office of the Head of Service (HoS) has always been in charge of our task force. Our task force include: 15 officers from the EFCC; 15 officers from the ICPC; four officers from DSS; two officers from NIA; 15 officers from the office of HoS; three officers from the Accountant General's Office; three officers from the Auditor General's office; two officers from the office of the Attorney General and Public Complaint Commission and some representatives of the National Association of the Nigerian Pensioners. I was only the head. Anything that happened in that task force must be endorsed by all these agencies before it is brought to me to endorse. So, why is it that people are calling Maina, Maina and not calling the task force? The reason is that I refused to bend backwards."
Maina challenged anyone – whether the budget office or the ministry of finance that has ever given him money to show the proof to Nigerians.

He said instead of appropriating government's money, his task force recovered N282 billion, which Okonjo-Iweala lodged at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), when the present Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammad Sanusi was the governor.

"This money, I have never seen in cash; I only see in paper. So, how did I come across the money? If there is anybody with proof of how government gave me money or how money entered into my account, let the person show the proof. People are talking on the newspapers. All this is because of the following: My team was asked to go and restructure the Police Pension Office. We went to the Police Pension Office and we found out that they were taking N300 million every morning. I reported to the Minister of Finance and asked her if she approved N24 billion for payment of police pension arrears and she said 'yes.'. I told her that the money was not being used to pay police pension arrears and that N300 million was removed every morning and these are the people that were removing the money. The matter was referred to the EFCC and ICPC," Maina said.

"The second thing was that they were allocating N1.5 billion every month for police pension. We found out that the actual amount was N488 million. That means that they have been stealing N1 billion every month for so long. Definitely, I will have enemies. We had to ask the Minister of Finance to stop these payments," he added.

As reported by ThisDay, Maina also stated that his team carried out biometric exercise, stressing that the exercise was approved by the Head of Service and not him.

According to him, all the agencies represented in the task force participated in the exercise.

"The task force never had or operated any account. It is the people who stole money and that are being prosecuted are the ones that paid money to the media to rubbish my name. They are rubbishing my name because they are afraid that if Maina is around, Maina is going to reveal a lot of things. We blocked leakages in government and saved billions of naira for the government. We created e-payment and gave pensioners smart cards. That way, a pensioner will go and verify himself at his own time instead of lining up every month and dying in the process. We found out that the payroll of the Head of Service was N5.12 billion but the actual was N825 million. So, why should Maina go and tell the Minister of Finance to stop sending N5.12 billion? That was my crime because this money was being shared all over."

Asked if he would come out of hiding and spill the beans if President Buhari gives him the necessary security, Maina said: "I am ready and half of those people will run away and leave Nigeria.

"I tell you this and that is why I am being persecuted. The former President is alive; the former Minister of Finance is alive. Let them go and find out about the money Maina recovered. How can they say there is no money to pay pensioners? It was during my time that we went and got approval for 53 per cent increase in pension. With the money we recovered, they were able to pay the 53 per cent increase. We recovered N282 billion. How many pensioners do we have in Nigeria? Secondly, because of the information I gave to the security agencies, they recovered N1.6 trllion from the security agencies."

5 women accuse journalist Mark Halperin of sexual harassment | Mr Olumide's Blog

Posted: 26 Oct 2017 04:17 AM PDT

Five women have accused veteran journalist Mark Halperin of sexually harassing them while he was in a powerful position at ABC News.

Reports say five women shared their previously undisclosed accounts with CNN and others who did not experience the alleged harassment personally, but were aware of it.

"During this period, I did pursue relationships with women that I worked with, including some junior to me," Halperin said in a statement to CNN Wednesday night. "I now understand from these accounts that my behaviour was inappropriate and caused others pain.
For that, I am deeply sorry and I apologize. Under the circumstances, I'm going to take a step back from my day-to-day work while I properly deal with this situation."

Widely considered to be one of the preeminent political journalists, Halperin, 52, has, among other career highlights, been political director at ABC News; co-authored the bestselling book "Game Change," which was made into an HBO movie starring Julianne Moore as Sarah Palin; and anchored a television show on Bloomberg TV.

He currently serves as an analyst for NBC News, making frequent appearances on MSNBC's "Morning Joe," .
But women who spoke to CNN say he also had a dark side not made public until now. The stories of harassment shared with CNN range in nature from propositioning employees for sex to kissing and grabbing one's breasts against her will.

Three of the women who spoke to CNN described Halperin as, without consent, pressing an erection against their bodies while he was clothed. Halperin denies grabbing a woman's breasts and pressing his genitals against the three women.

The women who worked with Halperin and who spoke with CNN did not report to Halperin. However, Halperin made many decisions about political coverage at ABC News, and had a voice in some critical personnel decisions.

None of the women have said, though, that he ever promised anything in exchange for sex, or suggested that he would retaliate against anyone.

Still, while they no longer work with him, Halperin continues to wield influence in politics and media. The women who spoke to CNN said it was for this reason that they shared their accounts on the condition of anonymity.

Others also said they still feel embarrassed about what happened to them and did not want to be publicly associated with it.

Kenyan man who went viral for his massive penis shows off transformation | Mr Olumide's Blog

Posted: 26 Oct 2017 03:47 AM PDT

The Kenyan man who went viral for having a penis 10 times the size of a normal man, is finally free, after having life-changing surgery to reduce his 11lb testicles and three-foot penis that left him unable to walk, wear clothes or go to school.

Horace Owiti Opiyo, 20, from Kibigori, Kenya, first noticed a cyst on his genitals when he was just 10 years old.

It is thought to have been caused by a mosquito bite releasing larvae that developed into parasitic worms that blocked Mr Opiyo's drainage system, resulting in his genitalia tissue swelling as fluid accumulated beneath the skin.

Teased by his classmates and unable to afford surgery, Mr Opiyo dropped out of school and became a recluse, convinced the devil had cursed him.
In a desperate attempt to help him, Mr Opiyo's neighbour, Duncan Otieno, took photographs of his giant genitals and posted them on Facebook.

The post went viral overnight and reached the Kisumu county Governor's wife, Olivia Ranguma, who asked a doctor to assess Mr Opiyo's condition.Doctors at Jaramogioginga Odinga Hospital examined Mr Opiyo and diagnosed him with scrotal elephantiasis.

Mr Opiyo was finally able to have surgery to remove his massive growth.
He said: 'Now I can run and I can play football. Now I'm free! The next step I want to take is to get an education. Who knows what will happen in the future?'

Justice Ayo Salami Rejects Appointment To Monitor Cases Of Corruption

Posted: 26 Oct 2017 03:25 AM PDT

The search for an head for National Judicial Council (NJC) committee to monitor graft cases continues as Justice Isa Ayo Salami has turned down the offer.

A former President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Salami rejected his appointment as the Chairman of the Corruption and Financial Crime Cases Trial Monitoring Committee (COTRIMCO) based on principle and conscience.

He is believed to have been convinced that the committee may not work as "efficiently expected" due to the "businesses" of some members.

Justice Salami was named the chairman of the committee, which was set up by the National Judicial Council (NJC) on September 27 by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen.

The appointment was based on the decision of the NJC at its 82nd meeting in Abuja.

According to The Nation, Justice Salami is said to be uncomfortable with the composition of the 15-man committee. The panel is said to include some who had been implicated in conflicting challenges between the bench and the bar.

Salami was out of Nigeria when he was appointed, he sought audience with the CJN upon his return.

It was learnt that after discussing his reservations with the CJN, he wrote to reject the appointment.

A Supreme Court source confirmed that Justice Salami had "thrown in the towel".

The source said: "I think Salami felt that a few members of the committee had been entrenched in the intrigues in the nation's Judiciary. He believes that as the chairman of the committee, he will not have the authority to keep those members in check.

"So, instead of creating unnecessary problem for himself without any place to run to, he opted to stay away from the committee.

"In fact, while he was still being asked by colleagues to give the appointment a chance, there was controversy over the reinstatement of a former chairman of the Presidential Task Force on Pension Reforms Task Team, Mr. Abdulrasheed Abdullahi Maina. Salami just said he won't accept this offer.

"He, however, took time to meet with the CJN personally to thank him for the honour and stated why he cannot accept the job. He made it known that he had no grudges against the CJN."

"I've so much regrets after bleaching my skin" – Makeup artist counsels ladies

Posted: 26 Oct 2017 03:25 AM PDT

Nigerian makeup artist, Tennycoco has advised against skin bleaching. According to her, she spent her money to bleach her skin but now she regrets it so much.

She stopped bleaching and has returned to her natural beautiful skin. Read her story:

My Road to Melanin
At the age of 19, I started lightening my skin..... By the time I was 20, I had become a heavy Skin bleacher... at the time it felt almost normal, I felt like I looked more attractive..... it became an addiction, I just couldn't stop. I craved so much to be lighter.. I felt being black wasn't beautiful enough. What a stupid way to have thought...

I guess the society we live in played a little role in my decision to bleach my skin... coupled with being very Naive at that age. It's widely perceived that the lighter you are, the more beautiful you look. To be honest I always knew it was a bad thing... I mean, I had seen loads of people with ridiculously damaged skin courtesy the effects of bleaching but I was just so deep into it... like I said it's actually an addiction.

As my 25th birthday started approaching I started to do a lot of Soul searching, a lot of self evaluation... concerning every area of my life and I finally started to see the light... to see how crazy I had been all these years... how crazy it was for me to have believed that my black skin wasn't beautiful, to have allowed myself to feel inadequate or to try and tell God ' how you created me isn't good enough' what a silly, crazy way to have lived.

Today I'm more than grateful that I finally saw the light. Black is beautiful! So beautiful! Never have I ever felt as beautiful and as at peace with my skin tone as I do now... Please Love your skin/Yourself the way God has made you.... you are beautiful, you are enough.

Time will always tell... imagine how I would look 10-15 years from now if I had continued to bleach my skin. Please don't do it... I did it and I Had/ have so much Regret... it's not worth it. You are beautiful just as you are.

I get a lot of messages asking me, how I was able to transition my skin back... I will be sharing all the tips soon enough.

Thank you to everyone who helped me get through this...... the Amount of support I have received is enormous... Thank you.

US Actor George Clooney Donates $1M To Fight Corruption In Africa

Posted: 26 Oct 2017 02:55 AM PDT

Popular Hollywood actor, George Clooney has donated $1 million to the Sentry campaign group to help in the fight against war crimes and corruption in Africa.

The Clooney Foundation for Justice yesterday announced the donation to the Sentry, an investigative initiative that Clooney co-founded to uncover the financial networks behind conflicts in Africa.

In a statement, Clooney said:
"Our focus is to make sure that war crimes don't pay. We want to make it more difficult for those willing to kill en masse to secure their political and economic objectives.
When we're able to go after the warlords' wallets and bankrupt those who choose the bullet over the ballot, suddenly the incentives are for peace, not war; transparency, not corruption."
The Sentry said the money will help fund reports in the coming year on "state looting and illicit financial flows out of the war-torn countries of South Sudan, Sudan, Congo, Somalia and the Central African Republic."

Clooney, who has been involved in using satellites to monitor military movement on the border between Sudan and South Sudan, founded the Sentry investigative initiative with human rights activist John Prendergast in 2015.

Fraudsters almost killed this guy, push him out of Moving Bus for rejecting their business

People, be careful this ember months. A young man was almost killed as he was seriously wounded after encountering scammers while traveling in Abia state.

According to Uwas Onyenku who shared the story, the victim was pushed out of the bus through the window after he rejected their request of business. Read the full story...

419 Alert at Isinweke:
Just happened this evening. Okey Nwapu Evans is my brother from Amakohia who mistaking entered one chance taxi in isinweke to umuahia.

On their way to umuahia opposite Uboma secondary school near late Eze Ovuike's house the 419 guys introduced a business worth of millions to him which he told them that he is not interested,

Immediately he declined the request of the business the both party had misunderstanding. They guys started fighting him and over powered him. As they reached Ekeikpa market in Amainyi he tried to alert people from the window they guys joined hands together and pushed him out from the car window. Which he gravely wondered.

God so kind some motorcycle riders immediately went after them, which they followed them till they diverted from 7 and half to Otoko on their way they had accident and was caught by Obowo police division Otoko.

While the matter was reported to Ihitte/Uboma police division, they immediately went to Obowo and carried them back to isinweke. And their car is still at Obowo police station.

Imagine how funny Nigerian police is. I personally - Uwas Onyenku - went to Ihitte/Uboma police station to confirm their arrest. Could you imagine that the police man in charge of they case told me that those 419 guys will go free because their Boss who sent them for the mission has called from Isialangwa in Abia and said nobody should touch his boys.

Buhari Still Working From Home 2 Months After?

Posted: 26 Oct 2017 02:25 AM PDT

*Nigeria needs a younger leader in 2019, says speaker at Chatham House
Two months after he returned from his medicals in London for an undisclosed ailment, President Buhari still operates from his official residence located in the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Barely settling down to take charge of activities of state, news broke that Buhari would temporarily be operating from his official residence in the villa due to the renovation of his main office.

It was said that the renovation was a result of the damages in his office caused by rats.

A foreign news agency quoted the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, as saying that while President Buhari was away on the medical follow-up, rats had a field day with the furniture, cables and air-conditioning units in his office.

"He has been using the residential office. What is important is that the job gets done. Whether he does it from his bedroom or his sitting room or his anteroom, it does not matter. Let the job be done. And the job will be done," he said.

However, two months after, the president still shuttles between the office in his official residence and the new banquet hall located beside the main office, where he occasionally receives visitors.

According to Guardian, how long the renovation would last has not been disclosed by the presidency.

A text message sent to the two presidential spokesmen, Femi Adesina and Garba Shehu, for the presidency's reaction to the matter was not immediately responded to. "Good evening sir. In August, we were told the president would be operating from his official residence due to renovation being done in his office by Julius Berger. The Guardian would appreciate a confirmation of when the president will start to work from his main office. Thank you sir. Regards," The Guardian wrote in the text message.

But later in the night Shehu, responded this way: "No section of the law or constitution is breached. The entire presidential complex is both office and home to the president. He is right to use any part as his office so long as the job gets done."

Meanwhile, the battle for the country's topmost job in 2019, assumed a different narrative at the Chatham House – Royal Institute of International Affairs – yesterday afternoon during the third series of the six-part "Next Generation Nigeria" initiative of the world renowned institute.

At the event, the guest speaker, Samson Itodo, threw a spanner in the wheel of those campaigning for President Buhari to seek a second term on the platform of his party (APC) in 2019.

Itodo, who is the Head of Research, Policy and Advocacy, Youth Initiative for Advocacy, Growth and Advancement (YIAGA) in Abuja, advised that the president should not bother throwing his hat in the ring again by reason of his age and health, for which he famously had two medical vacations of more than 100 days in London between March and August this year.

"The type of leadership we have in the country today is not the type we need if we want to move from being a developing nation to a developed nation," he said.

Senator Dino Melaye is very worried about the hardship his people are going through in Kogi State. He went on his knees yesterday to beg fellow senators to help save his people as they are currently in what he called perilous times due to lack of salaries.

He cried out as civil servants are being owed for months, leading to deaths.

He made reference to a director in the civil service, Edward Soje, who was owed 11 months salary and recently committed suicide after his wife of 17 years welcomed a set of male triplets.

Good enough, senators listened to him and have donated over a thousand bags of rice and other items.
