I once hawked pure water to fund my music career – SolidStar

Posted: 22 Oct 2017 03:49 AM PDT

Popular Nigerian singer, Joshua Iniyezo, aka SolidStar, has been fairly consistent in churning out hit songs in recent times. And his efforts have paid off as he is quite relevant in the industry today.

However, the singer didn't always have it good. In a chat with Sunday Scoop, he shared some of his past experiences.

"It wasn't really easy for me at the beginning. I had to do a lot of things just to make it. There was a time I was hawking sachet water and pastry (puff puff), and it was the money I made from that 'business' that I used to pay for my first studio session.

But through all the struggles, I never gave up because I knew I had a bright future ahead of me. I'm not there yet, but I thank God that my efforts are starting to pay off," he said.

SolidStar has been accused by some people of riding on the crest of other established artistes through collaborations to promote his songs, but he dismissed that allegation.

He said, "For as long as music has been in existence, there have always been collaborations. Can you imagine how the world would be like if there were no collaborations? By collaborating with other artistes, one is able to create a fusion of sounds. I do not deny that collaborations have helped my career, but that was never my intention. I'm all about making good music, and I would work with whoever I feel can deliver on whatever I'm working on."

POLITICS | South-West Governors Absence from APC Parley, A Protest

Posted: 22 Oct 2017 03:49 AM PDT

The growing rift among leading figures in the ruling party - APC has been cited as the reason behind the absence of all governors of South-West states from the party's consultative meeting in Abuja.

It was learnt in Abuja on Saturday that the absence of the Yoruba APC governors was designed to "send a message" to the party's administrative leadership.

The consultative meeting, which was held at the party's National Secretariat, Abuja, on Wednesday, was at the instance of the Chief John Odigie-Oyegun-led National Working Committee.

Apart from the deputy governor of Ondo State, Agboola Ajayi, who represented his governor, Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN), none of the other five South-West governors attended the meeting or sent in representatives.

It was also unclear whether they sent in apologies as is usually the practice.

According to Punch, a top-ranking source within the party, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said, "It was a message to all who care to understand the way the South-West plays its politics; there are no permanent friends or enemies but permanent interests.

"Did you see the attendance during the South-West zonal meeting? That should tell you something. I can assure you that all those absent from this (Wednesday's meeting) will be present at the caucus meeting on the 30th (October) and NEC on the 31st if God keeps us alive."

Although the Bauchi State governor, Abubakar Mohammed, told reporters that the issue of an automatic ticket for President Buhari did not come up, a party source, who attended the meeting, said there were subtle moves to use the gathering to endorse Buhari for 2019.

But the idea was said to have been dropped after a governor from North-West and another from North-Central drew the attention of those at the meeting to the dangers of doing so "at the moment".

CBN, Banks Get Order To Freeze All Accounts Without BVN

Posted: 22 Oct 2017 03:49 AM PDT

The Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the Central Bank of Nigeria and commercial banks in the country to disclose all accounts in their custody and the balances in such accounts.

The court ordered the banks to disclose details of all such accounts, their owners and their proceeds in their affidavit of compliance deposed to by their Chief Compliance Officers.

It also made an interim order directing the banks to freeze all the said accounts by stopping "all outward payments, operations or transactions" pending the hearing of the substantive application seeking the forfeiture of all monies in the accounts to Federal Government.

The banks were also directed to disclose "any investments made with funds from these accounts without BVN in any products".

Such investments to be disclosed by the banks as directed by the court include "fixed/term deposits and their liquidation and interest incurred, bank acceptances, commercial papers and any other relevant information related to the transaction made on the accounts".

The court also directed the CBN and the Nigeria Interbank Settlement Systems "to validate the information contained in the affidavit of compliance/disclosure filed by the respective 19 banks" within seven days from the date of service of the orders on them.

Justice Nnamdi Dimgba had made the orders on October 17, 2017 upon an ex parte motion filed on behalf of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Attorney General of the Federation.

It furthered ordered the banks to advertise the accounts without BVN in a widely circulated national newspaper as notice to those who might have any interest in any of the accounts.

The court also made an order appointing a Bank Examiner from CBN to examine the books of "any bank that fails to comply with the order of the honourable court to file affidavit of disclosure."

Justice Dimgba adjourned until November 16 for the hearing of the substantive application seeking the forfeiture of monies in accounts without BVN.

ALERT! 37 Fresh Job Openings For Young Nigerians In UN

Posted: 22 Oct 2017 03:49 AM PDT

There are 37 career openings for young Nigerians under the United Nations bureaucracy, according to the UN deputy secretary-general, Mrs. Amina Mohammed.

According to her, Nigeria has the opportunity to sponsor its youth for UN careers through the JPO. But Nigeria has not utilized the opportunity in a long while, she noted.

Amina disclosed this at a Cultural Night organised by Nigerians working at United Nations Systems. She said the openings are available via the Junior Professional Officers' (JPO) Programme, including internship for young graduates.

JPO is a programme for the young people to come and grow their career at the UN and it has 37 positions for Nigeria – one for each of the 36 States and the Federal Capital Territory.

The JPO programme provides young professionals with hands-on experience in multilateral technical co-operation, and is one of the best ways to gain entry level positions within the UN system.

JPOs are sponsored by their own government, which fund their placement in one of a range of UN organisations.

At the cultural night, Amina asked older Nigerians to pave the way for the youth by creating leadership opportunities for them .

She urged them to stop competing with the younger ones for employment opportunities.

"Whenever there are opportunities, try and pave the way for the young ones; you are getting old and we want to see the young ones in the system.

"We need to give the youth the opportunity because if we don't give them the opportunities, they can easily fall victims of crimes," she said.

According to her, the Nigerian employees at the UN system are getting old and there is the need for the Nigerian youth to be allowed to come into the system.

"Home really does need us; there are leaders and we are trying with the professionals that we see in the United Nations.

"The work we need to do is not just to the world but also to remember that at the root of all that, you are only as good as where you come from.

"And it's really important that we remember, with what we do here, what we can get back home, that we can encourage those at home, and inspire them.

"It's not just what we do for the world. Can't we take those expertise back home, Amina said, urging them to make the best use of every opportunity they got.

See The 11 Rules For Successful & Happy Families

Posted: 22 Oct 2017 01:49 AM PDT

What defines family success? Successful families share similar traits. "A successful family is one that has love and acceptance and laughter," said David Dykes, pastor of Green Acres Baptist Church in Tyler, Texas. "Any family that is thriving is successful."

These characteristics - or rules - can be adopted by any family at any stage. Being successful isn't just so you can post wonderful status updates on Facebook — successful families are important because "families are the basic unit of civilization which God created," said Dykes. "When families aren't getting along in general, it can impact the whole country."

But how do you achieve success as a family?

By following these rules and ways to implement them that are the hallmarks of successful families.

Rule 1: Faith. Whatever we face as a family, having faith in God provides the foundation upon which we build our unit. "When we turn to God in all things, He provides his strength, guidance and peace," said Janet Perez Eckles, international speaker and author of Simply Salsa. "We need to remember that we don't have all the answers but God does."

How to achieve faith: Have regular family devotions and prayer time; attend church together weekly.

Rule 2: Commitment. It takes being willing to stick together through thick and thin to make a family successful. "That commitment starts with parents being committed to their marriage first because that brings security to the children," said Mary L. Hamilton, author of See No Evil.

How to achieve commitment: Focus more on your marriage than your children; have regular date nights with your spouse.

Rule 3: Time together. "You can't have a successful family without spending time together," said Dykes. "There's absolutely no substitute for time." In our busy lives, we need to make family time a priority by carving out specific times for it. "If you don't make the time for family, someone else would take that time," reminded Dykes.

How to achieve togetherness: Schedule regular family outings or game nights.

Rule 4: Identity. Family members need to identify with each other as a family. "Each person needs to know they belong together, that there's a loyalty among the members and the confidence that someone's got their back," said Hamilton. "Everyone working towards the same goal can solidify your identity with each other."

How to achieve identity: Develop a family motto or mission statement.

Rule 5: Make memories. "Shared experiences strengthen the bond between family members," said Dykes. "Going on trips is a great way to make memories that can last a lifetime." Trips don't have to be extravagant or to exotic destinations to make an impression--often the fun is in doing something unusual or out-of-the ordinary together.

How to achieve memories: Get the kids involved in planning trips or vacations.

Rule 6: Dine together. It sounds like a cliché but the family that regularly eats together has a better relationship with each other. "We were always a big believer in eating together and that meal time wasn't screen time," said Dykes. "I think the trap a lot of families fall into is in thinking eating together isn't important to the family as a whole."

How to achieve eating together: Ensure activities don't infringe on dinner time.

Rule 7: Building up. Successful families are ones in which mean criticism isn't tolerated. "You want to have an atmosphere of building each other up, not tearing each other down," said Hamilton. "Making someone fear inferior is one of the biggest hindrances to success as a family."

How to achieve building up: Establish a rule that every criticism or tattle must be accompanied by three compliments.

Rule 8: Forgiveness. Holding onto anger or hurt can derail a family's success in heartbeat. "Lack of forgiveness can spell certain downfall in a family," said Eckles. "It fuels animosity and can to hard situations into emotionally charged ones."

How to achieve forgiveness: Teach kids how to apologize (be specific, be sincere, accept apology, forgive and move on).

Rule 9: Perseverance. Life isn't always easy, and families that work hard to overcome anything they encounter have more chance for successful. "The ability to overcome adversity is essential to developing a healthy family," said Eckles.

How to achieve perseverance: Develop a habit of being thankful in all things and of not giving up when the going gets tough.

Rule 10: Digital Disconnect. Have specific times of the day when everyone's disconnected from digital devices. We can become so connected to our electronics that we become disconnected from our families. Technology-free zones are critical to keeping families together.

How to achieve digital disconnection: Put a basket by the front door and collect all handheld digital devices during family meal time, meetings, game night, etc.

Rule 11: Fun. Sometimes, we get so involved in the day-to-day minutiae that we forget to enjoy one another. Laughter, light-hearted moments seal together the family. "Relationships are built on having fun," said Hamilton. "Making opportunities to have fun together will go a long way to bringing family back together."

How to achieve fun: Seek little moments when you can have a tickle fest with your kids, share a shoulder rub with your spouse, or chase your children around the table.

*By implementing these rules in your family, you can have a more connected and vibrant family. "When you find that willingness to make the effort to spend time together, you provide that feeling of belonging that we all need," said Hamilton. "That's what makes families thrive."

8 Ways To Make Your Church Fun Again

Posted: 22 Oct 2017 12:49 AM PDT

For many unbelievers, fun church may seem like an oxymoron. "Church fun, really?" they wonder.

You may be wondering same, and you've been part of church your entire life. Church is supposed to be fun. Church is God's idea. It is the manifestation of Christ in the world today - that's huge.

Church is where you find encouragement and community; where you are blessed to be a blessing. And God never intended it to be boring. God's plan for church is a vibrant and exciting gathering.
Church solidifies your identity and provides pathways toward your calling. It fosters accepting, forgiving relationships with people of all ages.

And it's fun; in fact, I believe the church should be the most enjoyable place on the planet, especially on a Sunday morning.

Yet I know that church is not fun for many, who tend to view it as a ritual endured for a few hours.

So if church is not fun for you right now (and there are a myriad or reasons why that may be), I've got suggestions to help make it fun again.

1. Be the Fun
"So I recommend having fun, because there is nothing better for people in this world than to eat, drink, and enjoy life. That way they will experience some happiness along with all the hard work God gives them under the sun" (Ecclesiastes 8:15, NLT).

Life is too short for it not to be enjoyable. God created this beautiful world for us to revel in.

Be the fun. Go to church determined to have a good time. Have fun in worship and during the sermon. Laugh at the preacher's attempt at humour. I'm not saying to make fun of others or be irreverent, but why don't you bring the fun and see if you don't start enjoying church?

2. Volunteer
The master was full of praise. 'Well done, my good and faithful servant. You have been faithful in handling this small amount, so now I will give you many more responsibilities. Let's celebrate together!' (Matthew 25:21, NLT).

Some of the best times I've had in church have been laughing and joking with volunteer teams. Not only that, but when we do something good and are faithful to our commitment, Jesus celebrates us. He loves to see the church using talents and abilities to serve His kingdom.

So why not sign up and become a volunteer? Look for the teams that have fun volunteering and join in.

3. Join a Connect Group
"And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near" (Hebrews 10:25, NLT).

Church is about knowing and being known by others. In a large congregation, however, it's a little hard for everyone to know your name; hence connect groups. These groups are how you get to know others on a deeper level than simply raising eyebrows to acknowledge someone as you pass or high-fiving when the preacher instructs interaction.

When you know people and they know you, church becomes more fun as well as a place you want to go.

4. Talk to People
"Let your conversation be gracious and attractive so that you will have the right response for everyone" (Colossians 4:6, NLT).

You may complain that church is no fun, but did you interact with anyone? Did you have a conversation? Did you talk to people?

In the beginning, God recognised it was not good for man to be alone. You may attend church with thousands of people in a service, but if you don't talk to anyone, it can feel incredibly lonely.

So be brave, break the ice and talk to someone. Who knows - they might have been meaning to talk to you too!

5. Look for People Who Need Help
"Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works" (Hebrews 10:24, NLT).

Philanthropic endorphins are chemicals released in the brain that induce feelings of happiness and satisfaction, and maybe even a little fun, when you help another human being.

Perhaps talking to someone will help them get through their week. You could give an elderly person a ride, help a single mother with her unruly brood, or buy a coffee for someone who probably can't afford it. There are people who sit next to you every week who need help you can provide. It always feels fun to do something positive for others.

6. Ask Forgiveness and Move On
"But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness" (1 John 1:9, NLT).

Let's not beat around the bush - church may not be fun for you because it reminds you of your sinfulness.

Firstly, no one is perfect; not the person next to you, not the worship leader, and not the guy with the microphone.

Don't allow your sinful nature to keep you from God. When you gave your life to Christ, God forgave your sins - past and future. Romans 8:1 declares that there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ.

You are forgiven and set free. You can come into His gates with joy and praise, not guilt and shame.

7. Seek God
"And I will give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit in you. I will take out your stony, stubborn heart and give you a tender, responsive heart" (Ezekiel 36:26, NLT).

Church is not fun when you have a hard heart. You will be critical, pessimistic and miserable.

If church is not fun for you, perhaps it's time to reinvigorate your relationship with God. Go deeper in your prayer time. Study the Word in a new way, such as verse mapping or a book club. Pray for God to change your hard heart into a heart of flesh - a heart of love, faith and hope in your relationship with God and attitude toward church.

8. Opt for Joy - Not Happy
"Always be full of joy in the Lord. I say it again — rejoice!" (Philippians 4:4, NLT).

We live in a world that qualifies decisions based on happiness with phrases such as, "Well as long as it makes you happy." Making you happy is not a good indicator of whether you should act out a specific behaviour.

Happiness is a fleeting feeling; joy is a choice.

When it comes to church, choose joy. Don't look for what makes you happy, but decide you will be joyful in all situations.

I’ve stopped smoking weed –Baba Fryo | Mr Olumide's Blog

I've stopped smoking weed –Baba Fryo
Veteran musician ,Baba Fryo, has said that he stopped taking weed and other related substances three years ago, told Sunday Scoop that foolhardiness is what makes artistes abuse drugs and alcohol.

He said,

"To me, it is just stupidity for one to abuse anything or take hard drugs because I don't see the benefit. Anyone who takes hard drugs is just 'donating' madness to him or herself. Most of these young guys indulge in these things because they either want to show off or are influenced by their friends.

"As for me, drugs don't add anything to me. Now, I only take alcohol and that is whenever I am in the midst of friends, but I don't drink excessively."

He admitted that he took weed for many years before he realised that it was adding nothing to him.

"I took weed for so many years, but I stopped about three years ago. I asked myself what it was adding to me and I didn't get any positive answer. I would just be calm and quiet for like four hours and people would keep wondering what was wrong with me. I also calculated the amount of money I was spending monthly to sustain the habit and it occurred to me that this tidy sum could be put to better use. For anyone who takes cocaine or any other type of hard drug, he or she is killing himself gradually.

"I talk to younger artistes who are close to me, but I can only advise them. For the ones who are not close to me, there is no way I can talk to them because some of these boys are arrogant. Once I sense that you are full of yourself, I don't come near you," the Notice Me singer said.

Going Deeper In Intimacy With God

Posted: 22 Oct 2017 12:24 AM PDT

"Might we not set ourselves to learn silence, stillness, and solitude? It will not be easy to come by. It must be arranged. The Lord Jesus, available to people much of the time, left them, sometimes a great while before day, to go up to the hills. He could commune in solitude with His Father.
Job, enduring his friends' tiresome lectures and accusations, was very much alone in the ash heap, but it was there that he came to know God as never before. When Paul received God's call to preach the gospel he did not consult anyone. He went into Arabia. The old apostle John, when exiled to Patmos, must sure have known a holy aloneness through which he received the book of Revelation." - Elisabeth Eliot.
Dear intercessors,
I like to write motivational books on prayer. One of my books is called Deeper Still: Secrets to a Deeper Prayer Life. As I wrestled with what to call this book and after finally deciding on a title, God gave me several confirmations that this was His choice. Within a very short time I saw the words "deep," "deeper," and "deeper still" everywhere — a street name, a magazine title, a song on a CD, an article title, and several other places.

God was showing me that depth is very important to Him as we learn the lessons of prayer. The great biblical characters like Job, Paul, John, and even Jesus had to learn this lesson. God wants to take each one of us deeper still — deeper than we have ever been before. And this requires an invitation to times of aloneness.

Going deeper in prayer is not always easy or fun.

Actually it can be quite difficult, especially when we don't know what God is doing. We have to give extravagant time to God. When I wrote Deeper Still, God was wooing me into a deeper prayer life. I thought to myself:

"Haven't I gone deep enough? Do You still want me to go deeper?"

That is exactly what He wanted. The difficulties of the end-times require it. You may wonder, "Lord, isn't it about time that I take action? I've been waiting a long time." But you may not realize the strength that is needed at the foundation of your life in order to stay consistently stable in hard times. Your foundation has to be strong so that no attack from the enemy can penetrate your firm trust in the Lord.

The word "deep" in Webster's Dictionary means "extending far below the surface, descending far downward, profound, opposed to shallow, piercing a great way, not superficial or obvious, hidden, secret, heartfelt, intricate." God wants to take us far below the surface in our relationship with Himself. This relationship must not be superficial — as so many are — but heartfelt, hidden, and of great depth.

The quality of our aloneness with God can actually enhance the quality of our time with others. Cultivate that deep, alone time with God and make it a holy aloneness. Make your relationship with God of prime importance because this is what life is all about. Someone once told my husband and I, "God is taking you deeper and working intricately with your life, so that you can work intricately with the lives of others." I've often thought about how true that statement has been to us.

We used to live in Virginia Beach so we learned a lot about hurricanes. A few years ago we had a hurricane called Ernesto that swept through the area. I've written about this hurricane before because of its' profound message. Ernesto was not a very forceful hurricane, yet many trees fell because of the strength of the winds. Many people lost one or more trees during that hurricane. It left Virginia Beach in a huge mess with trees and branches lying everywhere.

The stability of the trees depended on how deep the roots went below the surface. Shallow roots could not stand the force of even a small hurricane. In Virginia Beach in mild weather you could never tell how deep a tree's roots extended, but in a hurricane the truth was exposed. Shallow roots meant a big downfall. The roots just could not sustain the tree.

Likewise, right now God is developing your prayer life and the depth of your personal relationship with Him. He is inviting you deeper for a purpose. He has great plans to use you in the coming days. You must not bypass this most important season in your life.

During the last several years, I have concentrated a large majority of time in writing books on prayer. This has called for a lot of root work. It has called for alone time with God and heavy concentration. I am an active person and like to be out in the nations, but God is inviting me to go deeper. I have learned to say "yes" to this call. I know it is perhaps the most crucial time in my relationship with God. I have learned that the value of this time of going deeper with God is worth gold. I need to be exceedingly grateful for it even though it takes effort and a prioritizing of everything I do.

God is inviting you to enter into deeper intimacy. As you accept this invitation, I recommend that you do the following:
Thank Him for what He is doing in you - Live a life of praise and thanksgiving. Choosing to go deeper with God will pay off in the end. Thanksgiving brings joy and contentment.

Refuse to listen to the devil - Just as those shallow trees fell in the hurricane, God does not want you to be shallow so that you fall in the end times. He wants to strengthen you now. Listen to God when He is calling you deeper, and accept His invitation.

Be patient and don't complain - Watch your speech and guard it carefully. Be one who speaks positive words that bring joy and faith to others.

Be content with where you are - Thank Him for the depth He is developing in your life through your present circumstances. Let Him work intricately with your life.

Cultivate holy aloneness with God on a daily basis - Plan it in your schedule. Sacrifice in order to give God your time. Make Jesus central in all that you do.

Your depth with God now is of utmost importance. He knows what is needed. He is working intricately with your life. He is deep, and He is inviting you to go deeper into His heart through prayer. He knows how strong the winds will be howling in the end-times. He is very purposeful in what He is presently developing in your life. The devil will say it is not important. He will tempt you with these thoughts:

"Eat, drink and be merry. Nothing will happen. Live just for today."

But God is developing this holy aloneness with Himself for a purpose. Every day of "root building" is beneficial. When you are building depth, often you can't see anything happening on the surface. It can even feel that all is dead and lifeless, but actually the opposite is true — sustainable life is being built deep down where it really counts. Realize that your root development will one day pay off. Let His song be with you even during the midnight hour.
"Deep calls to deep in the roar of your waterfalls; all your waves and breakers have swept over me. By day the Lord directs His love, at night His song is with me - a prayer to the God of my life" (Psalm 42:7-8).

US Sentenced Nigerian Man To 6yrs In Prison For Fraud

Posted: 22 Oct 2017 12:24 AM PDT

A US Federal judge has sentenced a Nigerian, Kevin Kunle Sodipo Williams, to six and a half years in prison over a stolen identity fraud scheme that sought more than $12million in tax refunds.

The judge also ordered him to pay roughly $900,000 in restitution.

Williams, who lives in St. Louis, Missouri, was charged with mail fraud, aggravated identity theft, voter fraud and illegal re-entry to the US

Williams and others used public school employees' identifications stolen from a payroll company to file more than 2,000 fraudulent federal tax returns. He also used fraudulently obtained identification numbers to get refund checks.

Williams was deported in 1995 but returned in 1999.

Ag Deputy Assistant Attorney General, Stuart M. Goldberg of the Justice Department's Tax Division and Acting U.S. Attorney Carrie Costantin for the Eastern District of Missouri, said Williams entered the guilty plea in a Federal court in Alabama in July.

According to documents filed with the court, Kevin Kunlay (Kunle) Williams aka Kunlay Sodipo, 56, and others stole public school employees' IDs from a payroll firm and used them to electronically file more than 2,000 fraudulent federal income tax returns seeking more than $12 million in refunds.

He also stole several return preparer's Electronic Filing Identification Numbers and used them to secure tax-related bank products and services that facilitated the issuance of tax refunds, to include blank check stock and debit cards. Williams used the blank stock to print checks funded by the fraudulent refunds and directed some of the refunds onto debit cards.

Williams now faces a period of supervised release, restitution, forfeiture and deportation.

Nigerian Air Force Bombs Boko Haram Gathering, All Killed

Posted: 22 Oct 2017 12:24 AM PDT

A large gathering of Boko Haram terrorists in Urga, close to Konduga, Borno, was hit with bombs by the Nigerian Air Force Component of Operation Lafiya Dole, leaving all the terrorists dead.

The bombs dispatched from the Alpha Jet of Nigerian Air Force on Thursday also saw the structures of the terrorists completely razed down by fire. The action of the Nigerian Air Force component was when it conducted an attack on a location in the area.

A statement by the Air Force Director of Public Relations & Information, Air Commodore Olatokunbo Adesanya, said: "Previous intelligence reports, gathered through Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions by NAF ISR platforms, had indicated the presence of a large number of Boko Haram terrorists in Durwawa settlement in the outskirt of Urga.

"Accordingly, one Alpha Jet aircraft was detailed to carry out air interdiction on the target. Overhead the location, the aircraft acquired and attacked the target twice with bombs.

"Subsequent Battle Damage Assessment revealed that the aerial attack set off a fire, causing damage to the BHT structures within the settlement and neutralizing most of the BHTs while a few of them fled the location."

It added: "The aerial attack by NAF is in furtherance of efforts at ensuring the complete decimation of the BHTs and breaking their will to continue their terrorist attacks on innocent Nigerians."

What It Means To Be United To Christ

Posted: 22 Oct 2017 12:24 AM PDT

The word "in" is a preposition used throughout Paul's letters in the New Testament. This two letter word is part of a crucial doctrine for believers. Over and over, Paul teaches us that we are "in Christ." Being "in Christ" is a reference to our unity with Christ.

When God the Son left the halls of heaven and wrapped himself in human flesh at the incarnation, he united himself to us in our humanity. He then lived the perfect life we could not live and died the death we deserved. Through the gift of faith, we are united to him in his life and death for us.

Everything Christ did becomes ours.

I talk about union with Christ in my book, particularly in terms of what it means for us as believers to be united to one another through Christ. Today, I wanted to share some of the wonders of what it means that we are "in Christ."

*It began in eternity past when God chose us in Christ. "He chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him." (Ephesians 1:4).

*In Christ, we have forgiveness. "In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace"(Ephesians 1:7).

*In Christ, we are sanctified. "To those sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints together with all those who in every place call upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, both their Lord and ours" (1 Corinthians 1:2).

*In Christ, we have been given the Spirit. "In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory" (Ephesians 1:13-14).

*In Christ, we are new creations. "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come" (2 Corinthians 5:17).

*In Christ, we are loved. "I in them and you in me, that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that you sent me and loved them even as you loved me" (John 17:23).

*In Christ, we are united with other members of the Body. "We, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another" (Romans 12:5).

*In Christ, we walk with Him. "Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving" (Colossians 2:6).

*In Christ, we have been raised. "And raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus" (Ephesians 2:6).

*In Christ, we have peace. "And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus" (Philippians 4:7).

*In Christ, we have all we need. "And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus" (Philippians 4:19).

*In Christ, we were made for good works. "For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them" (Ephesians 2:10).

Being united to Christ, being "in Christ," is the basis for every benefit we have. It's fundamental to our faith and the Christian life. As I wrote in my book, Closer Than a Sister:

"In John 15, Jesus describes our union or connection to Him like that of a vine. 'I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you. Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing' (vv. 1-6).

Only in union with Christ can we bear fruit. Only in union with Christ can we be His disciples. Only in union with Christ can we obey Him. Only in union with Christ can we do anything. Just as a branch receives its life and sustenance from the vine, we too receive our spiritual life and health from our union in Christ. We grow and bear fruit from the nutrients He provides. Our union with our Savior is our very life and breath. So then, if we are not united to Christ, we are not saved, we have no forgiveness, and no redemption. If we are not united to Him, we will not be sanctified or transformed into His likeness. If we are not united to Christ, resurrection from death is not ours. Apart from union with Christ, we are lost and without hope.[1] Christ is everything; therefore, union with Him gives us everything"

When we understand this union, we realize its significance to our identity, to our growth in faith, to our sanctification, to our daily lives as believers. Take time today to dwell on the wonders of your union with Christ.

The 7 Deadly Sins A Nigerian President Should Avoid

Posted: 22 Oct 2017 12:24 AM PDT

Written by Tony Ogunlowo
The race to be President of Nigeria in 2019 has already started – well, behind the scenes. Will it be the incumbent (- if he decides to run again!) or somebody else?

The Bible lists Gluttony, Greed, Pride, Envy, Lust, Sloth and Wrath as the 7 Deadly Sins to avoid during our time in life and other religions have similar requirements.

For a President to effectively rule a diverse country, like Nigeria, he (or she!) needs to avoid the following 7 Deadly Sins:

1, The North-South palaver – As long as there is still Nigeria there will always be the debacle of the North-South divide.

Like two jealous lovers you can't do one thing for one region without doing something equal for the other.

Over the years it's become very petty and silly: the Presidency is rotated so that if you have a Northern President you must have a Southern Vice-President and in the next government it must be rotated to feature a Southerner as President and Northerner as Vice-President – whatever happened to electing the right person with the right qualifications to do the job irregardless of what region they're from?

Again the Northern and Southern elders will dictate, to the President, on who gets the most ministers, budget allocations and federal installations. There's nothing wrong in wanting the best for your region but things should be allocated on merit : for instance why appoint someone to head a ministry they're not qualified to head because you have to bow to the whims of either a North or South elder or the quota system? Or why situate a nuclear research facility, for instance, in a region where the people are only interested in goatherding?

To summarize the country cannot be ruled effectively by bowing to the demands of the North- Southerner gangs all the time.

2, Religion – Just like the North-South palaver, religion plays a key part in the running of the nation and should be steered away from: politics and religion don't mix but funny enough, in Nigeria, they do. If you have a Muslim President then the Vice-President has to be a Christian and if the President is a Christian then the Vice President, without a doubt, will be a Muslim- Nonsense! Another outdated pro rata system that should be consigned to history. Again this prevents the right candidate from getting the job – and getting the job done!

The Presidents hands will also become tied because of religion: a Muslim President making policies that will affect Christians will face a backlash and if a Christian President does anything that will upset the Muslims he'll be in trouble.

No politician's hands should be tied because of religion: policies should be fair and applicable to all irrespective of their religious affiliations: for instance some protestant churches are getting out of control in the country and the Muslim President and government is powerless to say or do anything for fear of upsetting the Muslim-Christian code.

3, Kleptocracy - The mere fact the President has the sole ATM card to the nations' bank account is not an excuse to loot it dry – thou shall not steal!

A President is the custodian of these finances and must ensure that they are distributed fairly – and honestly – to the various apparatus of government that require the funds and not divert them to private bank accounts in Switzerland or the Cayman Islands!

Even though some believe 'corruption is not a crime' it is as pilfered funds causes untold suffering for the masses who are supposed to be the end recipients. Therefore to re-iterate again – thou shall not steal (- or let those beneath you steal, not even 10 %!).

4, C.Y.A aka 'Cover Your Arse' aka 'Blame Your Predecessor' – Every President does it from Nigeria to America or Croatia to Sudan: every incumbent will blame his/her predecessor for everything going wrong in an attempt to cover their own backsides! If a President is going to keep on passing the buck then he or she is in the wrong job! As a President you're elected to fix things and not spend your entire tenure blaming your predecessor! The buck stops with the President! What's the point in having a surgeon come in to operate on a patient but can't (- or won't!) because he's too busy criticizing the last doctors work? Operate and fix the patient first, for that's what you're paid to do, and moan later!

5, Cronyism – For any President to be elected, anywhere in the world, he or she will need the support of political godfathers, cronies, hanger-ons etc who'll lobby behind the scenes to get him into office. Once in office they'll call in the favour and start making outrageous demands of the President: they want to be first in line for lucrative contracts or ministerial appointments. Any President should learn from Donald Trump – use them and dump them before they become a nuisance! Every President should learn to control his cronies: not favour one over the other or let them control him.

6, Tribalism – Tribalism is way up there with religion and the North-South palaver but on a different scale. A President from the South, for instance, might be a Christian or a Muslim but his ethnicity plays a major rule: is he Yoruba or Igbo? If he's Yoruba what part of Yoruba land is he from? Just like with the North-South palaver his policies will be seen to be influenced from what tribe he's from: a Yoruba President can't pass certain laws that will affect the Igbos or Hausas because he'll be accused of tribalism.( even his fellow Yoruba people from other sub-tribes will accuse him of tribalism!) As a result some tribes become a law unto themselves as the President will be scared of being accused of tribalism.

7, Indecision – A President can't be indecisive hoping a problem or situation will go away or that people will forget. Take the Chibok girls' kidnapping fiasco for instance, if the then President had been more decisive those girls could have been home within days, not weeks, not months and most certainly not years! When action needs to be taken a President can't afford to be indecisive whether that involves removing a minster, clamping down on terrorists' or ordering military action against subversives. No problem or situation will ever go away unless it's dealt with swiftly. So any President who thinks such will go away is in for a shock.

So there's my version of the 7 Deadly Sins a Nigerian President should avoid, of course there are things that didn't make the list like complacency, nepotism, buffoonery and quite a few others…but we'll leave that to later!

Woman duped in online dating scam gets happy ending | Mr Olumide's Blog

Posted: 21 Oct 2017 01:39 PM PDT

In 2015, Emma, a French citizen resident in the UK, decided to try online dating. Her first match was the very handsome Ronaldo "Ronnie" Scicluna, a 34-year-old electrician from the West Midlands who said he was Italian. While they enjoyed an intense correspondence - even saying "I love you" to one another - by the six month mark, they'd still not actually met in person.

They were speaking every day and had both deleted their dating profiles, but every time plans were made, Ronnie had an excuse.Of course, this should have been the huge giveaway, but it in fact took one of the waiters Emma worked with to spell it out for her to do some investigating.

One quick image reverse search on an app revealed the truth, but it took Emma a little longer to uncover it in its entirety.

Ronnie was not a dreamy electrician from the West Midlands. His pictures were actually of a Turkish actor and model called Adem Güzel, and after a long and bizarre confrontation with "Ronnie" during which he accused her of being crazy, it turned out he was Alan Stanley, a 53-year-old builder and decorator. So in September 2016, Emma found Adem and messaged him to warn him that his photos were being used by 53-year-old decorators to catfish.

As it happens, Adem had received quite a few of these messages, as this was not the first time this had happened, and he initially wasn't going to reply to her.
But then something told him to - and it's just as well as he did, because their exchange resulted in him coming to London to meet her, their first date, a kiss and now they're together.

And, in a weird way they have Alan to thank.Culled from Daily Mirror

School under fire after Facebook picture shows a black girl on a leash | Mr Olumide's Blog

Posted: 21 Oct 2017 01:09 PM PDT

A school is at the centre of a ' slavery ' storm after pictures of a young black pupil being led around a classroom on a leash were posted on social media.

The US elementary school has been forced to apologise after the shocking images were shared thousands of times, sparking national outcry.
However, teachers at the campus - which has pupils as young as four - insist the image of two white children holding leashes is all a big misunderstanding.Staff at Mitchell Elementary School in Bridgewater, Mass, say the picture actually show part of a lesson on how "lead strings" were used by parents in the 17th century to stop kids running off. Not everyone is convinced though. Many parents remain angry, with some saying it looks like the black girl is being "enslaved" by her classmates.

A parent told CBSBoston: "If you look at that picture out of context, what are you going to think? It's clearly what it looks like, it's disgusting."

While another parent, Andrea St. Clare, even picked up her child early from school she was so shocked and upset by the news.

Judge tosses $417M awarded woman in baby powder ovarian cancer lawsuit | Mr Olumide's Blog

Posted: 21 Oct 2017 01:09 PM PDT

A judge on Friday tossed out a $417 million jury award to a woman who claimed she developed ovarian cancer by using Johnson & Johnson talc-based baby powder for feminine hygiene.

Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Maren Nelson granted the company's request for a new trial, saying there were errors and jury misconduct in the previous trial that ended with the award two months ago.

According to the  Associated Press Nelson also ruled that there wasn't convincing evidence that Johnson & Johnson acted with malice and the award for damages was excessive.

The decision will be appealed even though Eva Echeverria has died, said her attorney, Mark Robinson Jr.

"We will continue to fight on behalf of all women who have been impacted by this dangerous product," he said in a statement.

Echeverria alleged Johnson & Johnson failed to adequately warn consumers about talcum powder's potential cancer risks. She used the company's baby powder on a daily basis beginning in the 1950s until 2016 and was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2007, according to court papers.

Echeverria developed ovarian cancer as a "proximate result of the unreasonably dangerous and defective nature of talcum powder," she said in her lawsuit.

Her attorney contended that documents showed that Johnson & Johnson knew about the risks of talc and ovarian cancer for three decades.

The company said it was pleased with the ruling.

"Ovarian cancer is a devastating disease - but it is not caused by the cosmetic-grade talc we have used in Johnson's Baby Powder for decades. The science is clear and we will continue to defend the safety of Johnson's Baby Powder as we prepare for additional trials in the U.S.," spokeswoman Carol Goodrich said in a statement.

Similar allegations have led to hundreds of lawsuits against the New Jersey-based company. Jury awards have totaled hundreds of millions of dollars.

However, on Tuesday a Missouri appellate court threw out a $72 million award to the family of an Alabama woman who has died, ruling that the state wasn't the proper jurisdiction for such a case.

The court cited a U.S. Supreme Court ruling in June that placed limits on where injury lawsuits could be filed, saying state courts cannot hear claims against companies not based in the state where alleged injuries occurred.
