Nigeria Set To Send Someone To Moon Posted: 27 Oct 2017 03:40 AM PDT Nigerian National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), has revealed its intention to send a Nigerian to the moon. Leading the Nigerian space program is one really tough gig. There is no billion dollar budget. The labs and equipment are far from cutting edge. The agency's museum sits empty. New challenges lurk around every corner. Yet S. O. Mohammed, director general of the Nigerian National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), is determined to wring scientific achievements out of his shoestring budget. "We have always said ... the Nigerian space program is not going to be an ego trip," Mohammed told CNNMoney. "We are not part of the race for the moon, we're not part the race for Mars," he continued. "What we need to look at is using the space program to look at how we can create typical Nigerian solutions to most of our problems." Mohammed's goals include the ability to locally design and build a satellite by 2018. By 2030, he hopes to launch a satellite from Nigerian territory. After that? He wants to put a man to the moon. Yet Mohammed faces intense scrutiny. Critics want to know why Nigeria is spending money on a space program when 70% of its citizens live below the poverty line. When the country's economy is facing an imminent recession? Moreover, what's the point of a moon mission that would launch more than 60 years after Apollo 11? Mohammed points to the country's three existing satellites as evidence of what can be gained from a national space program. Already, they've helped document regional climate change patterns and update the country's outdated maps. They've also been useful in tracking the movements of terrorist group Boko Haram in remote areas of the country. Mohammed's next priority is launching a Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellite capable of penetrating cloud coverage. The images it produces should help monitor activity in the Gulf of Guinea, which has recently seen a rise in pirate activity. Mohammed says these projects are about "capacity building" - advancements that will eventually turn Nigeria into a regional space innovation hub. Look no further, he says, than NASRDA's 2,000-member staff. Mohammed recalls that when he started at the agency eight years ago, it boasted just six scientists with PhDs. Now, the number of PhDs on staff has increased to 70, and another 50 employees are studying in pursuit of advanced degrees. NASRDA has been granted $20 million this financial year to keep operations going, but it needs $65 million more to get its next satellite project off the ground. Mohammed says the money will be put to good use - after all, Nigeria is building on the efforts of others. "We're not reinventing the wheel," he said. "The Nigerian model is a good model for the developing world. We're not starting all over like the U.S. or Russia." culled from Olu famous Mr Olumide's Blog |

Single Mother Caught Hiding Phone Inside Soup to Deliver to Boyfriend in Prison Posted: 27 Oct 2017 03:10 AM PDT A Nigerian woman has been nabbed after it was found out that she had hidden a mobile phone inside a container of soup she was trying to smuggle to her boyfriend in prison. Fatima Balogun, a 33-year-old single mother, was on Wednesday arrested by prison officials as she tried smuggling the phone to her robbery suspect lover at Ibara Prisons, Abeokuta, Ogun State. The woman was arrested at the prison's gate lodge by the Special Intelligence Unit of Nigerian Prisons, Abeokuta Maximum Prisons. Addressing newsmen yesterday, the state Comptroller of Prisons, CP Benson Abolade, said the action was a threat to national security, which he said is taken seriously by the Comptroller General. Abolade said the suspect was arrested for trafficking in Prison, which he said was against the Prison operations. He said some articles like handsets, weapons, drugs, sharp objects among others are prohibited from the Prisons, noting that "it is an offence to bring these articles to the yard without the permission of the Prison Officials." He said the Command has contacted the Police for her prosecution to serve as deterrent to others. Speaking with newsmen during her parade, the suspect confirmed that she hid the phone in the soup to take to her boyfriend, identified as Ganiyu Ajibode. Balogun disclosed that she has two children for the suspect, while they were married, before he eloped with another woman four years ago. The suspect, who said she lives in Fagba, Iju-Saga in Lagos, said she has never visited the Prisons since her ex-husband was remanded for robbery six months ago, denying that the man asked her to bring the phone to him in the prison. Her words: "I hid it in the stew because I know they will not allow me to take it to him in the Prisons. I did not know it is bad. I wrapped it in cellophane bag. "We have been together for two years. I live with my father. I regret my action and hope that the government forgives me." culled from Olu famous Mr Olumide's Blog |

Some say the man is not a gentle man, for sitting down and allowing his pregnant wife stand in a pic. Some say they're not sure she's his wife, that she's just a babymama because he's not wearing a ring. Some say how can a decent man be seated and all covered up and allow his woman be almost n*ked. Goodluck Jonathan: I reformed Nigeria’s democratic process Posted: 27 Oct 2017 02:05 AM PDT Nigeria has to grow the credibility of its democracy to a stage where we will no longer have to wait for court judgments to conclude our elections, former President Goodluck Jonathan has said. He said, "I always say that I reformed the democratic process as President in order to consolidate democracy in Nigeria and the sub-region. I conceded defeat without a fight because I wanted to set a standard for our democracy, going forward. "My aim then was to change the narrative and prove that election-related litigations should no longer define Nigeria's democracy. People must not always go to court and obtain judgments before elections in Nigeria are declared conclusive. "We don't get to hear about such court cases in mature democracies. I wanted us to get to that point in our democratic experience. I thought that it won't be out of place if we get to that stage where those who lost elections will be able to congratulate those who won." Jonathan said this at the sixth edition of African Ambassadors Interactive Forum and Dinner, organised by the African Third Sector Resource in Abuja, on Thursday, where he was presented with the 'African Leadership & Achievement Award.' Opening up further on the real reason for the decision he took, the Jonathan said that his commitment to the protection of lives and investments of Nigerians, their assets and the economy made him concede defeat and avert a looming crisis. "I was convinced that the implications for peace and the economy of the sub-region and the rest of the continent, couldn't have spelled anything else but doom." culled from Olu famous Mr Olumide's Blog |
US To Supply Electricity To Nigeria – US Energy Secretary Posted: 27 Oct 2017 02:05 AM PDT The United States of America has concluded plans to supply power to Nigeria, Cote D'Ivoire and South Africa, thus changing its status as a major energy importer to exporter. Rick Perry, United States Energy Secretary, disclosing this at the Africa Oil Week conference which is ongoing in South Africa, said the plan is targeted at enhancing development in the continent. He explained that the United States has reversed its policy of serving as energy importer to become a major exporter to African countries like Nigeria. A source in attendance who preferred not to be named quoted him as stating: "We talked about a lot of opportunities – LNG, coal, but it all goes to the issue of power and power being able to be delivered into places that don't take electricity for granted." Perry stated further: "The United States wants to be partners with Nigeria, South Africa and throughout the continent. "American LNG is going out to the world. Projects by Anadarko Petroleum Corp. and Exxon to convert gas discoveries in Mozambique to LNG are welcome even as the U.S. seeks to boost its own shipments, according to Perry." Investigations showed that Nigeria is the 60th largest goods trading partner with United States. culled from Olu famous Mr Olumide's Blog |

Pregnant Woman Tortures Girl For Eating Children’s Food Posted: 27 Oct 2017 01:35 AM PDT A pregnant housewife, Juliet Ozoarinze, has been arrested for allegedly torturing a 10-year-old girl, who was simply identified as Blessing, in Ijesha, Surulere area of Lagos. The mother of four was also accused of assaulting the victim since she started living with the family in July 2017. She was alleged to have used different objects on her over allegations of being tardy in running errands, not being prompt in answering summons and practising "witchcraft". The suspect's husband, Kenneth, was reported to have returned Blessing to her aunt, Vivian, on Tuesday, October 17, after the wife allegedly used a knife to cut the 10-year-old in the hand for allegedly stealing and eating the food meant for her children. Vivian, who gave the couple the child because Kenneth was a family friend, told Punch that Kenneth said he was returning the child because of the injury. She said, "Blessing's mother lives in Abuja and she has four children, including her. She had been saddled with the care of all the four girls. We thought the couple could assist with Blessing's education in exchange for helping them with house chores. "The man suddenly brought the girl back to our house. The woman used a knife to cut her in the hand and the man said he was not happy with the wife. After he left, I saw that she could barely sit and I asked her to remove her clothes. I was alarmed at the extent of her injuries and she told me that Juliet had been torturing her since she started living with them. "I called Kenneth and asked if he knew about the girl's injuries and he denied. He came back and was angry to see all her sores. I asked him to pay for the girl's treatment, but he refused and said he didn't have money." She said after she could not raise money for Blessing's treatment, her neighbours advised her to approach a human rights organisation. She explained that after several attempts to convince Kenneth to foot Blessing's medical bill failed, she reported the case at the Lagos State Office of the Public Defender. An official of the agency told Punch that when Blessing was brought to the office, she could not sit due to the extent of her injuries. She said, "The woman is a housewife and mother of four children. She is currently pregnant with her fifth child. The girl had been cruelly treated and poorly fed by Juliet. Instead of sending her to school as her family promised, they enslaved her. "When we checked her body, we saw many physical injuries ranging from knife cuts to marks of flogging with wire and other objects. She could barely walk or sit because she had severe injuries on her buttocks and had also been hit on the head and waist with a pestle." It was learnt that the OPD reported the case to police at Itire division, and the suspect was arrested. When queried on what the victim did, the suspect allegedly claimed that Blessing stole her children's provisions and food. She reportedly denied beating her with objects. "The police asked Blessing what made her mistress to beat her and she replied that on an occasion, she was forced to accept that she was a witch. The Divisional Police Officer promised to charge the woman to court at the end of investigations," a social worker said. The Director of OPD, Mrs. Olubukola Salami, confirmed the incident. She said, "We are concerned about the surge in the number of child abuse cases in Lagos State despite legislative measures and several awareness and advocacy mechanisms put in place by the government. "While OPD will continue to get perpetrators to face justice, we urge all residents of Lagos to be vigilant and report all forms of child abuse in their community." It was gathered that the pregnant woman had been arraigned in a magistrate's court for the offence. culled from Olu famous Mr Olumide's Blog |

Teachers dare el-Rufai over competency test | Mr Olumide's Blog Posted: 27 Oct 2017 01:17 AM PDT The Kaduna State Government and the state chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers are set for a showdown over the recruitment of 25,000 fresh primary school teachers in the state. Although the union had initially kicked against the move, the government had gone ahead to announce a vacancy for 25,000 fresh teachers, claiming that those to be replaced had failed a competency test conducted previously. However, the state chairman of the NUT, Mr. Audu Amba, said the development would force teachers in primary and secondary schools in the state to down tools,Punch reports. While addressing a press conference shortly after an emergency meeting of the state executive of the union in the state capital on Thursday, Amba warned that the NUT would embark on strike if the State government carried out its threat to sack "even a single teacher" over the competency test. He described the test as unprofessional and also pointed out that the only competent body empowered by law to test teachers was the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria. The NUT boss noted that, judging by the latest development, the state government appeared to have resolved to sack teachers. "Government will be setting us back 20 years if 22,000 teachers are relieved of their jobs," he said. Arguing that the exercise did not conform with what was required of assessment tests for teachers, he said, \ "We have resolved that, by this examination that was given to our teachers, if any teacher is relieved of his appointment, the NUT may not guarantee further industrial harmony with the government of Kaduna State. culled from MPNB Mr Olumide's Blog |
Breaking: NNPC Begins Crude Oil Exploration In Nasarawa Posted: 27 Oct 2017 01:10 AM PDT Oil search in the inland basins received a fresh impetus following the commencement of exploration activities in the Benue Trough by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC). According to a statement by the NNPC, GMD of the Corporation, Mr. Maikanti Baru, announced this development during a visit to Governor Tanko Almakura of Nasarawa State in Lafia. Baru stated that the visit was in fulfillment of the Presidential mandate which directed NNPC to resume oil exploration activities in some of the nation's inland basins which include the Chad Basin and the Benue Trough. He said the Presidential mandate was driven by the urgent need for the nation to increase its oil and gas reserves, thereby improving revenue streams and creating more business and employment opportunities for Nigerians. Baru added that the move was also in line with NNPC's corporate vision of 12 Business Focus Areas (12 BUFA), informing Governor Almakura that the NNPC team was in Nasarawa to sensitise the government and people of the state on the mission. "I am therefore happy to be personally here to kick-start the beginning of a high-profile stakeholder engagement towards oil exploration in the Nasarawa State's part of the Benue Trough," he stated. He assured that as a responsible corporate organization, NNPC would do everything possible to operate peacefully among the people and with much respect to the environment. culled from Olu famous Mr Olumide's Blog |
You Abandoned Me, I Won't Head Your Panel – Ayo Salami Posted: 27 Oct 2017 01:10 AM PDT Former Court of Appeal president, Justice Ayo Salami, who was removed from office and couldn't return to office under President Jonathan until he retired, broke his silence on his appointment as Chairman of the Anti-Corruption Cases Trial Monitoring Committee set up by the NJC. Salami divulged his reason for rejecting the appointment in an interview with Punch on Thursday. The Nation had reported on Thursday that Salami rejected the appointment because of some persons included as members of the committee. But Salami said in a phone chat that he rejected the appointment because it was not in his interest. Insisting that contrary to the statement issued by the Office of Chief Justice of Nigeria on Thursday that it had yet to be formally notified of Salami's decision to reject the appointment, Salami said that he had sent a formal letter to the appropriate authorities to that effect. Making a veiled reference to the former President Jonathan administration's refusal to reinstate him as the President of the Court of Appeal despite NJC's recommendation that he should be returned to office, Salami said that the NJC and the courts abandoned him during his trying time. The following conversation ensued... Punch: You have been unreachable since you were offered the appointment by NJC. Why sir? Salami: When they announced the constitution of the committee, I was not in the country. Punch: Why did you reject the appointment? Salami: I rejected the appointment because it is not in my interest. Punch: What do you mean sir? Salami: What I mean is that it is not in my interest; that was why I rejected it. Punch: I want you to elaborate on 'not being in your interest, sir. Salami: It is because I don't need it. Punch: But it seems the judiciary needs your help. Salami: To do what in the judiciary? Punch: I think it was to help the judiciary to remove the obstacles hindering successful prosecution of high profile corruption cases. Salami: Where was the judiciary when they were harassing me? Where was the court when they were harassing me? Punch: Maybe the judiciary has now realised that you were unfairly treated. Salami: So, let them continue to do it in their own way. Punch: But what we heard was that you rejected the appointment because of some persons appointed to work with you as members of the committee. Salami: It is not; I don't just feel like doing it. it is not because of anybody. Punch: But the CJN and NJC said they had not received your letter rejecting the appointment. Salami: Let them look for it, I have sent it. Punch: You have sent the letter? Salami: Yes, of course. If I have not sent it, how did they know? Punch: They said they learnt of your rejection through a news report. Salami: But it is there in the report that that the information was released by sources close to the Supreme Court. "Maina's investigation has been expanded. This is beyond reinstatement. It has gone beyond that. "You know that the INTERPOL has just issued an international warrant on him. A Nigerian court has also issued yet another warrant of arrest." The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, disclosed this in an interview with Punch on Thursday. He said Maina's investigation had been extended beyond his reinstatement and subsequent posting. The spokesman said, "All those cases involving Steve Oronsaye (ex-Head of the Civil Service) that are ongoing, you know Maina is also involved. Law enforcement agencies are looking at that too. "You are also aware that the Senate is also carrying out its own investigation on the matter. "The matter is being investigated from all fronts. The EFCC, for example, is discovering more and more properties and its officials are sealing them. They are also looking at banks and all that. "In fact, this investigation will also touch some foreign countries." Shehu said the security agencies, including the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN), were making presentations to the President on the matter. He, however, said the President had yet to say the final word on the matter because he wanted to be fair to all the reports. culled from Olu famous Mr Olumide's Blog |
Burundi becomes first country to withdraw from International Criminal Court | Mr Olumide's Blog Posted: 27 Oct 2017 12:47 AM PDT Burundi is becoming the first country to withdraw from the International Criminal Court. An ICC spokesman confirmed that the pullout takes effect Friday, a year after the East African nation notified the United Nations secretary-general of its intention to leave the court that prosecutes the world's worst atrocities. Burundi is the only one of three African nations to go ahead with its withdrawal after making moves last year to leave amid accusations that the court focuses too much on the continent. South Africa's withdrawal was revoked in March. Gambia's new government reversed its withdrawal in February. Burundi's withdrawal doesn't affect the preliminary examination of the country's situation already underway by the court's prosecutor, ICC spokesman Fadi El Abdallah told The Associated Press. That examination began in April 2016. Burundi has faced deadly political turmoil since April 2015, when President Pierre Nkurunziza announced plans to seek a disputed third term that he ultimately won. Last month, a U.N. commission of inquiry report said crimes against humanity, including killings and sexual violence, are still being committed in Burundi and it asked the ICC to open an investigation as soon as possible. Alleged perpetrators include top officials in Burundi's National Intelligence Services and police force, military officials and members of the youth league of the ruling party, known as Imbonerakure, said the U.N. report, which was based on interviews with more than 500 witnesses. Hundreds of thousands of people have fled the country. "Burundi's official withdrawal from the International Criminal Court is the latest example of the government's deplorable efforts to shield those responsible for grave human rights violations from any kind of accountability," Param-Preet Singh, Human Rights Watch's associate director of international justice, said in a statement Friday. "We urge the ICC to take a progressive approach in interpreting its jurisdiction so that victims maintain a viable path to justice." Copyright 2017 The Associated Press. All rights reserved.
