The Key To Raising Kind Kids

Posted: 23 Jan 2018 04:40 AM PST

Keys are important. They help us unlock, start, or open different objects or places. Unfortunately, I seem to misplace my keys daily. I have spent precious moments scouring the house, my purse, the car, and my pockets for keys when I should be traveling to my next destination.

As a parent, I have also spent a great deal of time searching for keys; however, these keys were for the purpose of eternity. These were keys needed to help me unlock the hearts of my kids, open doors of freedom or opportunity, or start a new adventure.

In a culture that is running rampant with accusation, public defamation of others, war and rumors of war, kindness matters —and it was one key I was determined to discover.

Defining Kindness
In Galations 5:22, we discover that kindness is a fruit of the Spirit. The Greek word for kindness in this passage is: chrēstotēs, which literally means moral goodness and integrity.

The Vine's Expository Dictionary goes on to explain kindness as:
  • the sense of what is upright, righteous,
  • signifying "not merely goodness as a quality; rather, it is goodness in action, goodness expressing itself in deeds,
  • not goodness expressing itself in indignation against sin, but with grace and tenderness.
So, while kindness is certainly an expression of good deeds, the deed cannot be separated from the heart attitude; in other words, we are seeking how to raise kids who not only express kind deeds, but literally overflow from the inside out with kindness; their deeds are just an expression of what their hearts feels.

Does Kindness Matter?
The next step in our search for keys is to determine; "Is this important to me as a parent?" As parents, educators, and leaders, we must ask ourselves if we value kindness. Is this a key worth searching? Without the keys to my car, I couldn't go anywhere. Without the keys to kindness, will our children be able to go where they are destined to go? Will they fulfill their destiny without kindness?

To see the absolute power of kindness and why it matters, we have to look no further than the theater and the recent release of the movie Wonder. If I had to summarize the message of the movie, it would be "kindness is more powerful". Kindness matters! Kindness has the power to change a difficult situation or person into something good.

However, the most important question we must ask is: "Is kindness important to You, Father?"

The answer to God's heart toward kindness can be found in Exodus 34:6. Moses has asked to see God, and God places Moses in the cleft of the rock and lets His goodness pass before him. God introduces Himself to Moses with these words:

Then the Lord passed by in front of him and proclaimed, "The Lord, the Lord God, compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in lovingkindness (kindness) and truth;

And we also can realize the importance of kindness to the Father by the fact that it is one of the fruits of the Spirit mentioned in Galatians 5:22.

But what is the KEY to raising Kind Kids?

Look For The Key Within. We become what we behold.

If our children are 'beholding' us as leaders, teachers, and parents who are being unkind, that is what will be cultivated in their hearts, too. When siblings fight, or children roll their eyes when peers backstab, we, as adults, should begin asking "Where did they learn that behavior?". We have to start the journey of raising kind kids by looking at ourselves.

I was raised in a single parent family with one older sister. We fought constantly. Even as adults we were unkind to each other. When I had 2 girls, similar in age as my sister and myself, I literally panicked. I did NOT want to have a home that was plagued by fist-fights, angry words, or silence. I had to look no further than my own heart and the seeds of bitterness toward my own sister (and mother) and start the journey within.

We are told in Hebrews 12:15, "And make sure no one lives with a root of bitterness sprouting within them which will only cause trouble and poison the hearts of many."

Yes, mom and dad, our own roots of bitterness toward our siblings, parents, and others will cause trouble and poison the hearts of our children. As we behold the One who forgives and let Him shine the light on our own places of unforgiveness, bitterness, and self-centeredness, we become a reflection of Him, and then our kids behold Christ in us.

Language is the Key
Kindness does not mean being nice.

Kindness is based on your internal morals, integrity, and beliefs. Being nice, however, has to do with actions based on how others see you. Being kind may not always appear as being nice — especially in the area of enabling. Oftentimes, being kind means exercising healthy boundaries; saying no.

As a single mother raising 4 children, I wanted to be able to give them things. However, by saying no (without guilt), setting healthy boundaries (because I was cultivating something eternal), I had the opportunity to impart integrity, a generous spirit, and more to my children. By allowing my children to actually feel the ache of going without, they learned empathy and compassion for others in similar situations.

Kindness will result in eternal fruit, where being nice will just be temporary. It will make us, or someone else, feel good for a time. Learn to differentiate between the two, explain the difference to your children and use correct language. Do you want them to be nice? Or kind?

A Work Of The Spirit
Ultimately, the role we have as parents is to introduce our children to Jesus.

Jesus gives the gift of the Holy Spirit to those who are called by His name. Without Christ in us, we do not have access to the Kind King. We can 'do' the works of kindness, but the fruit of kindness comes from the well-spring of the Spirit in us. To raise kind kids, we must train them up in the way they should go, teaching them about the love of the Father, and the gift of the Holy Spirit. Our greatest key is dependency on Christ.

Learning to 'abide in Him' (John 15). Because without Him, we can do no good thing. As we cultivate these principles in our lives, the natural outflow will be the effect it has on our children. If our homes become a habitation of the Spirit of the Lord, our children will be affected.

Acknowledge and Affirm
Make it a habit to affirm your children and each other for genuine kindness.

In my embittered state (I got better), I saw the negative. I focused on what was not right, always correcting the bad behavior. As I began to heal, however, I began to see the good in my children and others. I was able to begin to affirm and acknowledge the kind words, the hard choice to repent, and the brave deed to not complain. As I saw these glimpses of kindness, I fanned them into flame by affirming and acknowledging.

Since kindness is indeed a fruit of the Spirit, we can water the seeds of kindness in the hearts of our children by affirming and acknowledging.

Aisha Buhari: The Critic In The Other Room - by Reuben Abati

Posted: 23 Jan 2018 03:50 AM PST

Mrs Aisha M. Buhari, the wife of President Muhammadu Buhari is probably the most loved person in Nigeria today, especially by critics of her husband's administration. She first came to our notice in this regard when in the course of her ailing husband's medical vacation in London, she famously declared through BBC Hausa Service that the Buhari administration had been hijacked by a cabal.

Long before anybody raised the issue, she was the first to observe that President Buhari has no business seeking a second term in office the way he was carrying on.

She even added that,
she would not join him for any second term campaign. I had written a piece at the time titled "Aisha and that BBC interview".

I said I expected that the statement attributed to her would be disowned. But no such thing happened. Her husband soon took his own pound of flesh when at a press conference in Germany, he told the entire world that Aisha Buhari, his wife, belongs to the "living room, the kitchen and the other room." I didn't support this brazenly chauvinistic statement but I reminded Mrs Buhari that her primary duty is to support her husband, and that this, historically, has indeed been the duty of First Ladies. Mamie Eisenhower covered up for her husband. Jackie Kennedy had to endure her husband, JFK's shortcomings.

Hillary Clinton saved Bill Clinton by standing with him in his most difficult moment. Not every President would ask for a Grace Mugabe, who pushed her husband out of office, or a Lucy Kibaki who made Mwai Kibaki of Kenya look like a domestic victim. Closer home, the tradition has been for our First Ladies to stand by their husbands through thick and thin. Those whose husbands were Muslims, with perhaps the exception of Maryam Babangida, took the additional step of staying off the radar. Aisha Buhari is probably the first Nigerian First Lady to cultivate the public persona of an assertive, irreverent, independent-minded, critic-in-the-other-room, aggressive, resident and privileged "wailing wailer" in Aso Villa.

I don't consider this a praise-worthy development. I stand by the cautious conservative view I expressed in my previous article on her. From initial concerns about her haute-couture fashion appearances, Nigerians have come to regard her more for her occasional, but striking political statements, or such statements that may be attributed to her. She reportedly bolted out of "the other room" about three days ago, when she retweeted videos of two major attacks on her husband's administration on the floor of the Senate. Senator Isa Misau (Bauchi Central) had accused President Buhari of surrounding himself with incompetent persons. He even cited the example of the new Director-General of the Nigeria Intelligence Agency (NIA), which in my view is an unfair assessment.

Civil servants are not necessarily competent because they pass promotion examinations. The most important requirement in the secret intelligence cycle may not necessarily be book intelligence. But Misau spoke his mind as he painted a broader picture of incompetence and disappointment, and the failure of the Buhari cabinet: 50% of whom he dismissed outrightly. Mrs Buhari found this so quotable and impressive, she tweeted the video on her twitter handle six times! Three days later, and in the face of the public interest that this has generated, the tweets are still there. Nobody has disowned them or deleted them.

One popular caveat in twitter-sphere is that "retweets are not endorsements." In this case, it seems we are not dealing with mere retweets, but actual endorsement. You retweet what makes an impression on you. Mrs Buhari on the handle, a verified handle – @aishambuhari – also retweets Senator Ben Murray-Bruce's condemnation of the Buhari administration. Ben Bruce goes about proclaiming that he talks common sense, and although I don't see much sense in what is common, uncommon sense projects more creativity in my view, but clearly Aisha Buhari sees sense in Ben Bruce's unflattering criticisms of President Buhari's leadership style and ability, and hence she serves as his Vuvuzela. Ben Bruce has been going about since then like a man who just got a sweetheart kiss from a crush.

Mrs Buhari's conduct is unusual; it is shocking in its extra-ordinariness, to put it directly, it smacks of treachery and disloyalty. But it has fetched her enormous praise. My brother and colleague, Dele Momodu, a one-time Buharist, no, in fact a Buharideen, now a thoroughly disappointed "wailing wailer" has written a paen to Aisha Buhari. Ben Murray-Bruce has also composed the equivalent of a poem in her honour. He says she must refuse to be "cowed". Ben Bruce is mean. Why use the word cow at this time? Is he suggesting that Mrs Aisha Buhari should not allow herself to be turned into a cow, when he as a common sense Senator knows that cows are not particularly famous in Nigeria at this time?

He redeems himself by saying she is an intelligent woman. Some other commentators have said that Aisha Buhari will make a better President of Nigeria than her husband. There are others who have suggested that she should become Nigeria's Vice-President in 2019. "Toasting" and "seducing" another man's wife with nice words is off-limits in my cultural space. I disagree with everyone on social media and elsewhere who have been saying that Aisha Buhari is right to criticize her husband publicly and to lend voice and strength to the likes of Senator Misau and Ben Murray-Bruce. Reno Omokri has also praised Aisha M. Buhari. This is how we would be here and Femi Fani-Kayode will be the chairman at an award ceremony making President Buhari's wife "the Woman of the Year 2018". If care is not taken, Aisha Buhari will soon join the Chibok Girls Movement or become an associate of Oby Ezekwesili's Red Card Movement.

I think something is wrong somewhere. The position of the President is a national security position. It is hard enough to be a President, but to have issues on the home front makes the job doubly difficult. This is the very issue that came up the other day. One character who likes to talk accused me of being sympathetic to the Jonathan administration and using style to criticize the present administration. I told him off and reminded him of my rights as a trained journalist and as a professionally licensed critic and citizen. He held his ground. So I asked: "Aisha Buhari criticizes President Buhari and retweets anti-Buhari comments, is she also a Jonathanian woman? The guy had nothing to say. So I added: "if President Buhari is being criticized in his own bedroom, by persons who eat his pepper and palm oil, what moral right does anybody have to silence critics of his administration?" The guy blurted out: "if my wife tries that nonsense with me, there will be a meeting with my in-laws with serious consequences!" Case settled, so I rested it.

The de-marketing campaign against President Buhari is even worse than that. Within 24 hours after the retweet on Aisha Buhari's handle, it was reported that one of her daughters, Zahra M. Buhari had also posted a cryptic statement, which suggested a condemnation of the administration. Unlike her mother, Zahra does not seem to have a verified twitter handle. There are even about eight handles bearing her name, including one that confesses to being a parody. But of all these, the most influential is – @zmbuhari – which has the largest following – 77.4k – and which seems to be more credible. Under this handle, Zahra supports her father, retweets her mother's tweets including the ones already cited, she sounds spiritual and poetic and in every measure, comes across as her mother's daughter, as if mother and daughter are united in a rebellious mission inside the Presidential Villa.

I recommend a forensic study of the retweets under her handle. In one case, she retweets @aminuganawa, a bright US-based Ph.D, who writes: "I doubt if there is anyone who would want you to succeed more than your wife and children. Your success is their success. If there is anything that will harm you they are likely to be the first to notice it. If you want an honest feedback listen to your wife and children." That was three days ago, shortly after Zahra retweeted her mother's retweets. Are we being told that the President does not listen to his wife and children, and that indeed, outsiders have held him hostage? A rigorous semiotic analysis of wife-and-daughter-Buhari's tweets belongs to another level of analysis and other revelations. But here is Zahra M. Buhari's most controversial tweet in the last 48 hours and it speaks for itself:

Sahih al-Bukahri, Knowledge
Book 3, Hadith 1

Narrated 'Abu Huraira
When the Prophet (pbuh) finished his speech, he said, Where is the questioner,/

Who inquired about the Hour (Doomsday)?"/
The Bedouin said "I am here, O Allah's Apostle"/

Then the Prophet (phub) said, "When honesty is lost, then wait for the Hour/
(Doomsday)."/

The Bedouin said, "How will that be lost?"/

The Prophet (phub) said, "When the power/
or authority comes in the hands of unfit/
persons, then wait for the hour/
(Doomsday.)"

The foregoing verse is probably the most intellectually relevant criticism of the Buhari government to date and to be attributed to his daughter's platform is the scariest of all things. "Unfit persons"? "Doomsday?"

It seems to me that some people are sleeping on the job. The happiness of the President is a matter of national security. The biggest problems that the Buhari administration has faced have been mainly unforced errors. In the absence of a competent opposition, this government has consistently shot itself in the foot. To add to that: a President with what looks like a troubled home is the most unfortunate thing that can happen to a country. To show a lack of capacity to manage that particular trouble has sorry implications for the Presidency and the administration. I may sound conservative but I think the twin-image of a rebellious wife and a free-willing daughter posting negative comments about a sitting President should be of greater interest to the intelligence agencies and reputation managers.

However, it is possible that there is a fake Buhari wife and a fake Buhari daughter out there being used to amplify negative narratives, in the most treacherous medium of the time: the social media. It is the job of the intelligence system to track that trail and stop it, if indeed it exists. It doesn't require more than a couple of emails to Twitter, anyway, with complaints about implications for national security. Zahra M. Buhari doesn't need to have so many twitter accounts in her name. And if Aisha Buhari's account has been hacked, we should be told, and if she did not retweet those anti-spouse messages, we should know even if serious damage has been done already. If this is not the case: then we should say this: her job in the other room does not include openly and deliberately discrediting her husband. This much should be made clear. And if that fails, then we would be dealing, more or less with the true quality of the man in that other room.

The bottom line in my view: This President needs HELP. And he is not getting it.

Herdsmen Attacks To Be Brought Under Control Soon, says Buhari

Posted: 23 Jan 2018 12:25 AM PST

President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday assured Nigerians that increasing cases of killings being carried out by suspected herdsmen in communities across the country would soon be brought under control.

He said security agents deployed to affected areas would achieve the feat in no distant time.

According to a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, the President gave the assurance while receiving the Board of Directors of the Nigerian Economic Summit Group at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

"The President assured Nigerians that the rising attacks on communities by herdsmen will soon be brought under control by security forces deployed to the vulnerable areas across the country.

"He said the unfortunate incident of attacks, which had resulted in loss of lives and properties, had already brought sorrow and hardship on many Nigerians, with the government deeply affected," the statement read.

The President also said his administration remained resolute and focused on delivering on the three-pronged promises of "securing the lives and properties of Nigerians, halting the pillage of the economy by corrupt public officials, and creating employment opportunities for the youths."

He said the initial economic challenge posed by recession was already dwindling, with the economy smarting out and posting better results on falling inflation rates, higher foreign reserve and better ranking on ease of doing business.

"If you look critically into the 2018 budget, we have already taken into account key issues of more stable electricity, construction of roads and rails, and the airport concession," he said.

FIRS Makes Over N4Trillion For Nigeria In 2017

Posted: 22 Jan 2018 12:08 PM PST

Looks like more Nigerians are finally getting used to paying their taxes and doing same. The Federal Inland Revenue Service ( FIRS ) said it collected a total of N4.03 trillion in 2017.

This figure represents 82.38% of government set target of N4.89 trillion for the last year.

A statement signed by Wahab Gbadamosi, Head, Communications and Servicom Department of the Service said "FIRS' collection of N4.03 trillion is N720 billion (22%) more than the 2016 total collection figure of N3.305 trillion. The 2017 collection performance exceeded the 2016 collection performance of 78.75%."

Executive Chairman of FIRS, Mr. Tunde Fowler was quoted to have said "with the support of the National Assembly, and that of other stakeholders, FIRS was able to collect over N4 trillion in 2017. This is an increase of over 20 per cent relative to our collection in 2016. We are hopeful that going forward, FIRS will be able to fund this country through taxation.

Going back memory lane, the FIRS Chairman recalled that when he was the Lagos Internal Revenue Service, LIRS Executive Chairman, the Oba of Lagos played an important role in tax collection. Apart from supporting LIRS morally, Fowler recalled that Oba Akiolu mandated the White cap chiefs to accompany LIRS officials to key markets and most parts of Lagos to sensitise the people on tax collection.

The FIRS Chairman shed light on FIRS' collection in 2017: "we all recall that beginning from the second half of 2014, there has been a sustained decline in the global prices of oil. Oil Revenue Generated by FIRS in 2014 – 2.45 Trillion; Oil Revenue Generated in 2015 – N1.29 Trillion; FIRS Oil Revenue Generated in 2016 – N1.16 Trillion; FIRS Oil Revenue Generated in 2017 – N1.52 Trillion."

This trend he said had adverse effect on the ability of oil dependent countries to meet their development objectives. "For us in Nigeria, the decline in receipts from oil revenue and the concomitant decline in accruals to States from the Federation Account has placed many States in a financial quandary to the point where basic obligations such as the payment of employee wages has become a perennial challenge. This is not the first time Nigeria will experience economic slow-down as a result of fluctuations in global oil prices."

Fowler noted that the FIRS under his watch "hopes to ensure that we act differently this time around by looking beyond oil as the mainstay of our economy. By putting our hands together in contributing to our set goal, I am confident that we will surpass our past results and we'll be well on our way to the future we hope to achieve."

Fowler noted that though collection increased by 20 per cent relative to 2016, the Cost of Collection went down to 2.49 per cent in 2017 relative to the 2.60 per cent cost of collection in 2016 and 2.62 in 2015. This, the FIRS Chairman noted, attests to the growing efficiency in collection by the Service and to which the embrace of Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) tools contributed.

On his part, the Oba of Lagos noted that 60 or 70 per cent of FIRS collection comes from Lagos, to this end he said he will be sending a letter to Senate President Bukola Saraki to draw his attention to the 1851 treaty, which the colonial government signed with Oba Akintoye: that three per cent of all taxes collected in Lagos will go to the Oba, while 2 per cent of all exports will go to Oba Akintoye. "While I am not asking that this be paid to me now, it could be paid to the Lagos State Government".

The Oba who said he lives by example stated that he pays as much as N350 million in tax every year.

Nigeria he said now needs good governance that will deliver development to the people. "FIRS has collected N4 trillion and they will collect more in the futures. The legacy that Tunde Fowler has made in Lagos is still felt but you have more work to do,

Lagos does not discriminate against anybody just as the state will not accept any injustice from any quarters."

He enjoined Senators and members of the House of Reps to dialogue with and give, President Muhammadu Buhari a chance as he loves Nigeria. He also called on the federal parliamentarians to support the anti-graft war by confirming the Economic and Financial Commission Chairman, Ibrahim Magu. Nigeria, the monarch assured will not break.

The FIRS contributed N2.78 trillion to the Federation Accounts. Representing 99.5% of the target for 2017 (7.5% higher than 2016 performance).

An analysis of the collection performance indicates that non-oil accounted for 63% while oil tax accounted for 38% of the total collection. Stamp Duty recorded the most increase in performance with 94%.

The achievements recorded by the FIRS from the administrative and operational initiatives introduced by the Executive Chairman, Tunde Fowler in 2015 and 2016 were designed to reposition the agency.
