Stop Playing God - PDP Replies Tinubu Posted: 30 Mar 2018 01:11 AM PDT The Peoples Democratic Party has cautioned the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, to stop playing God, saying Nigerians have the faculty and freedom to determine the leadership that best suit their desires without anybody's control. The party also advised Tinubu not to allow himself to be used a second time as he still bears a gross part of the blame for the enthronement of "this incompetent, divisive, nepotic and inherently corrupt administration of President Muhammadu Buhari," which has brought the nation to its knees in three years. PDP National Publicity Secretary, Mr.Kola Ologbondiyan, in a statement in Abuja on Thursday, said Tinubu's speech, at his colloquium, rather than being a damage of the PDP, ended up amplifying an admittance of the failure of President Buhari and the APC administration. Ologbondiyan said without listening to the prompting of any politician, Nigerians across the board have taken the liberty to accept PDP's apology which was made patriotically in the overall interest of national healing, reconciliation, unity and cohesion. He said, "The PDP watched with amusement as Asiwaju Tinubu struggled with words to appease President Buhari and give him assurances that he can win a second term election in the face of mass failure both in governance and in their discredited, rejected and troubled platform. "It was a direct admittance of failure and indictment on President Buhari's administration, when Asiwaju pointedly told the President that the ship of the nation, under his (Buhari's) watch, still needs to be rescued, almost three years down the line. "It is tragic that Asiwaju had to tutor his visitor, who had no policy direction since his election in 2015, by engaging in a revision of the programmes and policies of the PDP, such as the leasing system, the mortgage and pension schemes which boosted the economy and directly impacted on the lives of Nigerians. "More pathetic is the fact that the APC leader presented the PDP programmes as if he was introducing novel ideas in the economy. This clearly stood with our position that the APC government is incompetent and lacking in ideas of how to move the nation forward. "While we congratulate the Lagos Governor Emeritus on his birthday, the PDP considers it needful, to forewarn him to study the current ambience of Nigerian politics as it relates to the failures of the Buhari Presidency and the fact that the citizens have since rejected this Presidency and the APC, so that Asiwaju will not find himself swimming against the tide." culled from Olu famous Mr Olumide's Blog |
Chinese Man Nabbed For Attempting To Smuggle Over N100Million Out of Nigeria Posted: 30 Mar 2018 01:11 AM PDT The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has arraigned a Chinese national, Li Yanping, before Justice Babatunde Quadri of a Federal High Court, Abuja, for allegedly concealing the sum of $300,000 (N108m) while attempting to board a flight to Dubai. The EFCC said in a statement that Yanping failed to inform officers of the Nigerian Customs Service as required by Section 2 (3) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2011 (as amended by Act No. 1 of 2012). The accused was arrested by the Presidential Task Force on Trans Border Cash Movement on March 15, 2018, for failure to disclose the said sum while attempting to board an Emirate flight, EK 8786 en route to Dubai. He was handed over to the EFCC for further investigation and possible prosecution. The charge read, "That you, Li Yanping, on or about March 15, 2018, at the Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport, Abuja, within the jurisdiction of the Federal High Court, had in your possession cash in the sum of $300,000 during your outbound clearance for travel to Dubai and failed to declare the said sum of $300,000 to the officers and men of the Nigerian Customs Service as required under the provision of Section 2 (3) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2011 (as amended by Act No. 1 of 2012), thereby committing an offence punishable under Section 2(5) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2011 ( as amended by Act No. 1 of 2012)." The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge. Following his plea, The Punch reports that counsel for the EFCC, Ene Emonye, asked the court to fix a date for trial and to remand the defendant in EFCC custody pending trial. Yanping's counsel, Chinedu Eze, however, prayed the court to admit the defendant to bail. While moving the application brought under sections 35(1) and (4) and 36 (5) and (6) of the 1999 Constitution and sections 158, 162, 163 & 165 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015, Eze urged the court to exercise its discretion in favour of his client by releasing him on bail pending trial. Justice Quadri granted the accused bail in the sum of N10m with two sureties in like sum. The sureties, according to him, must not be below salary grade level 12 in any of the federal ministries or parastatals, and must have traceable addresses. He added that the sureties must comply with bail bonds accompanied with their passports. "The defendant is to be remanded in the custody of the EFCC until the perfection of his bail conditions," the judge said. The case was adjourned till April 17, 2018 for hearing. culled from Olu famous Mr Olumide's Blog |
Security Chiefs Say There's A Plot To Scuttle 2019 Elections Posted: 30 Mar 2018 12:41 AM PDT Heads of the nation's security agencies have expressed worry over alleged ongoing attempts by some groups to disrupt the processes leading to the 2019 general elections. The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, disclosed this in a statement made available to journalists in Abuja on Thursday. Shehu said the heads of the security agencies expressed the worry during an interactive session they had with some media owners and senior journalists at the Presidential Villa, Abuja on Tuesday. The presidential spokesman listed those who addressed the media practitioners to include the Director General of the Department of State Services, Lawal Daura; Director General of the National Intelligence Agency, Ambassador Ahmed Abubakar; and the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Gabriel Olonisakin. He quoted them as saying that the aim of the unnamed groups was to create a stalemate in the polity. He said, "The security chieftains expressed the particular worry that there are groups in the country with evil designs to disrupt the processes leading to the 2019 general elections in the hope of creating a stalemate. "They warned the media against the activities of some unregistered groups that have lately been active in trying to undermine critical institutions such as the law-enforcement agencies and the Independent National Electoral Commission. "The security heads also called for closer cooperation from the media to prevent terrorists and radical ideologies directed from abroad from undermining the ongoing efforts to restore security in parts of the country facing the challenges of terrorism, economic sabotage, criminality, farmers-herdsmen's clashes and the spread of illegal weapons." Shehu said in the midst of the debate over the right to freedom of expression and the government's efforts to ensure that the digital space and the mass media generally did not become a playground for terrorism and destabilisation, the security chiefs gave assurances that they would maintain a balance between openness and national security. He said they however called on media owners and journalists to walk the fine balance between openness on one hand and national security on the other. According to him, the security chiefs also gave assurances that the security situation in the country was within the control of the government. He further quoted them as saying that the situation could be helped where the media reduce sensation from their daily coverage. "Our state of national security is not as bad as it is painted by the media," he quoted them as saying. In seeking the support from the media towards the achievement of security for everyone, the heads of the agencies reportedly emphasised that sharing and coordination among security agencies and the media were essential to counter the ever-changing threats faced by the nation. Shehu further said the security chiefs also expressed the view that the Nigerian media had a role to play in securing Nigeria's national interest. This expected role of the press, he said, was in tandem with global best practices, particularly on issues that had bearing on national security. He said the security chiefs, therefore, invited the media "as partners to continue to be security conscious and exercise restraint in disseminating information that could expose the services to ridicule or harm our national security. "Prior consultation with appropriate members of the Intelligence Community is the best way to go." culled from Olu famous Mr Olumide's Blog |
Presidency Slammed As Martin Luther King Family Disowns Award Given To Buhari Posted: 30 Mar 2018 12:21 AM PDT Several Nigerians invaded the social media space on Thursday, condemning the roles allegedly played by some presidential aides in the controversial award for President Muhammadu Buhari by the Martin Luther King center a few days ago. Pictures of the delegation from the centre, The King Center, presenting the award on behalf of the family of legendary American civil rights activist to Buhari at the Presidential villa, found their way into the media space hours after the visit. Obviously uncomfortable with the development, The King Center tweeted on Wednesday, dissociating itself from the award. The statement, released via @TheKingCenter, read, "The award given to President Buhari of Nigeria was not given by The King Center, at the request of The King Center or by the children of #MLK and CorettaScottKing." The development ignited a series of unfavourable comments from members of the public, especially when an online platform, Leaders NG, published on Thursday that the Nigerian government might have paid up to $3m to procure the 'fake award' for the President. Following the outrage, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs and Diaspora, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, hurriedly issued a statement on Thursday to defend the award. She explained that the award was in appreciation of the President's fight against corruption, noting that the visit of the MLK family members to Nigeria was not sponsored by the Federal Government. Dabiri-Erewa in the statement by her media aide, Abdurrahman Balogun, dismissed insinuations that the government paid money for the award, stressing that nothing could be further from the truth. "It must be categorically stated here that the trip was totally privately funded and not one kobo was spent by the Nigerian government," she said. The Presidential aide also clarified that the commemorative plaque given to Buhari was presented on behalf of the Martin Luther King family and not the TK Center as being speculated. The statement read in part, "Our attention has been drawn to obviously fake online news reports on the visit of some members of the MLK family to Nigeria. "The members, led by the Matriarch of MLK, Naomi Barbara King, were in Nigeria as part of the activities initiated to celebrate a low- key Black History Month in Nigeria as part of deepening partnership between Africa and its diaspora. "As part of the activities, they visited President Buhari and gave him a commemorative plaque for his fight against corruption and what they termed from the "Africania Diaspora" a term for Africans in diaspora for which the oldest of them all, Naomi Barbara King, was selected to present on behalf of the family (Not TK Center) as a sign of appreciation to the President." The statement further stated that the Americans enjoyed their visit and they decided to extend their stay by two days, noting that the political endorsement of Buhari by a member of the MLK family was done in his personal capacity. "As a non-political group, he was asked to refute the statement, which he refused to, insisting that it was his personal opinion, and not that of the family nor that of the centre, of which he has been a board member and the Chief Operating Officer for over five years. "This may have led to some arguments among them, which they have said they will resolve when they get back to the United States, which apparently led to the tweet being circulated," it said. But the Leaders NG, in its report, alleged that the award was facilitated by Dabiri-Erewa, through a Ghanaian self-acclaimed foreign diplomat, Dr. Erieka Bennett. According to the report, a quick fact-check on Erieka Bennet revealed that she runs a non-governmental organisation, called, Diaspora African Forum, based in Accra, Ghana, and that she used her influence to facilitate foreign awards for unsuspecting African leaders. The online newspaper further alleged that Bennett was contracted by Dabiri-Erewa to bring Martin Luther King Jnr's family to Nigeria to present an award to Buhari. It added that Bennet contacted someone in King's family, a distant relative of Martin Luther King called Dr. Naomi Barbara, "after The King Center declined earlier request by Bennett to influence an award for a certain African leader." In his reaction on his facebook page, An Associate Professor of Journalism and Emerging Media in the School of Communication & Media, Kennesaw State University in the USA, Farooq Kperogi, condemned the action which Buhari's aides played in the saga. Kperogi wrote, "Nigerian scam artists, led by Abike Dabiri, got some Black American hustlers from Atlanta to pose as close relatives of the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jnr. and presented a fraudulent "Black History Award" to Buhari. "First, Coretta King, Martin Luther King's wife, died on January 30, 2006. I know Buhari gives appointments to dead people, but in America dead people don't give awards. Second, Black History is celebrated in February, not March, in America and Canada. "The extent the Buhari government is prepared to go to court of embarrassment and ridicule Nigeria in its bid to conceal its crying incompetence is simply astounding. Also, one Aminu Farooq, said, "This fraudulent award didn't come to me as a surprise. Nigerian leaders are always vulnerable when it comes to these types of awards. My father had been chief executive officer in a Federal Government establishment in Nigeria. "He said if he had paid attention to awards, he would have received hundreds of them during the period he occupied office. There is a growing business industry in Nigeria that can be called the award industry. Buhari's case is only different from the ones I know about because his own award is 'international.' It is very sickening and sad." Another Facebook user, Isyaka Laminu Badamasi, said, "When a few nights ago my wife and I watched Channels TV News at 10 and saw the presentation of an award called the First Black History Month National Black Excellence and Exceptional Leadership Award by a certain falsely described 'matriarch' of the King family, I smelt a rat. I told her this award is very strange though I couldn't put my finger on why." Also, Musa Idris said, "The long and short of it is that the award is a big fraud, as fraudulent as Buhari's integrity! My surprise is that it is Abike Dabiri whom we used to know and love in NTA of old that organised this heist and foisted it on the unaware President-in-a-trance." In 2016, former President Goodluck Jonathan became the first African leader to be given the Martin Luther King human rights award. However, the Peoples Democratic Party described the saga as a national disgrace and embarrassment. The PDP, in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Kola Ologbondiyan, on Thursday said the lie by Buhari's handlers smacked of what it described as a desperation by the presidency and the All Progressives Congress to procure international endorsement, ahead of the 2019 elections. Ologbondiyan said the embarrassing act had made the nation a laughing stock before the international community. He said the nation was jolted when the centre distanced itself from the award and noted that, "the award given to President Buhari of Nigeria was not given by The King Centre, at the request of The King Centre or by the children of Martin Luther King jnr." He said, "It is now clear that this sinking, incompetent and deceptive APC administration, in their desperation, can fabricate and stage-manage anything, including name-dropping of international figures and agencies, in their desperate attempt to delude Nigerians again, now that the 2019 general election is fast approaching. "Nigerians have discovered that having failed to gain any endorsement from reputable international figures such as Bill Gates, the APC and the Presidency have now cheapened the nation by resorting to this despicable act of name-dropping of world-renowned human right activist, Dr. Martin Luther King jnr., further dragging down our once sterling image before the comity of nations. "The fact remains that not many Nigerians believed in the authenticity of the award in the first place, as the Buhari-led administration, by its undemocratic and anti-people proclivities, including records of violations of rights of citizens, is not deserving of any form of recognition by any human rights group, let alone the family of the world-acclaimed Martin Luther King Jnr. "Today, the PDP has been vindicated in its stand that the APC government is not only hypocritical but overtly deceptive and must not be trusted." Ologbondiyan recalled that the PDP had issued a statement, earlier this year, cautioning Nigerians and the international community to be wary of information and claims coming from the APC and the presidency, particularly on endorsements and performance indices. While he urged the Presidency to shed its alleged proclivity for lies, he also demanded the immediate arrest, investigation and prosecution of all the Presidency officials involved in this messy scandal and crime against our nation. "Moreover, the Presidency and the APC should save the nation from further embarrassment by jettisoning other planned endorsement stunts and fabricated performance indices, as Nigerians are already rallying with the repositioned and rebranded PDP in their collective quest to end the misrule of the APC and restore a sincere, purposeful and people-oriented government come 2019," he added. culled from Olu famous Mr Olumide's Blog |
University of Ibadan To Expel Over 320 Students For Poor Results Posted: 29 Mar 2018 10:57 AM PDT Professor Idowu Olayinka, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan has revealed that the institution would expel about 328 students for what he called 'shameful academic results' in the recently concluded 2016/2017 academic session. The UI's Vice Chancellor, in a statement made available to newsmen in Ibadan Wednesday blamed the situation on the absence of Post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination test before the affected students were admitted. Prof. Olayinka revealed further that the university compiled the list of the affected students following the "meeting of the University Senate held on March 19 and 20 to deliberate on the 2016/2017 academic results of the final year and non – final year students." He said the affected students did not meet up with the minimum condition approved by the university Senate. He said, "One out of every nine of the 100 level students did not meet the minimum condition to retain their studentship." culled from Olu famous Mr Olumide's Blog |
SO TRAGIC! Husband, Wife & Their 6 Children Perish As Their Car Falls Off 100ft Cliff Into River Posted: 29 Mar 2018 10:57 AM PDT A couple and their six children have died after their car plunged 100ft off a cliff in California just days after child services tried to visit the family home. Investigators "don't know" if Jennifer Hart, who was behind the wheel, deliberately drove her wife Sarah and their six adopted kids - aged from 12 to 19 - into the sea. What led to this tragic end? The family are believed to have been on a short break from their home in Portland, Oregon, when the tragedy happened overnight. Neighbours of the Harts have told US media that they suspected the children may have been abused with child protective services visiting the family home last Friday, but getting no answer. A neighbour told KOIN (6) that shortly after the visit the couple and all six kids hurried off. Officers have found the bodies of three of the children - Markis Hart, 19, Jeremiah Hart, 14, and 14-year-old Abigail Hart - and both the women, aged 39. But rescue teams are continuing to search for Hannah Hart, 16, Devonte Hart, 15, and Sierra Hart, 12, who they believe were also in the car. Dana DeKalb told KGWNews that Devonte had come next door more than a dozen times begging for food, saying his parents withheld it as "punishment." Mendocino County Sheriff Tom Allmon said: "We have every indication to believe that all six children were in there. "We know that an entire family vanished and perished during this tragedy." One of the missing children - Devonte - gained widespread attention when he was photographed hugging a white officer during a 2014 protest over a fatal police shooting of a black man. The California Highway Patrol has not determined why the vehicle went off the ocean overlook on the Pacific Coast Highway, about 150 miles north of San Francisco. The sheriff said: "There were no skid marks, there were no brake marks." However, he added that investigators have no reason to believe the crash was intentional. The mothers were wearing seatbelts but the children were not, according to The Press Democrat. An California Highway Patrol official told People they "don't know" whether Jennifer intentionally drove the car off the cliff. Officers were called at about 3.40pm after a passerby spotted the SUV on the rocks below, but investigators have been unable to determine exactly what time the crash happened. Clark County sheriff's Sgt. Brent Waddell said the family recently had a visit from Child Protective Services, but later entered the house and found no obvious signs of trouble or violence. Sarah Hart had pleaded guilty to a domestic assault charge in Minnesota in 2011. Her plea also led to the dismissal of a charge of malicious punishment of a child, online court records say. A former neighbour, Bill Groener, 67, described the siblings as foster children, adding: "They were friendly enough. The kids were all home-schooled. They stayed indoors most of the time, even in really nice weather." He said the family didn't eat sugar, raised their own vegetables, had animals and went on camping trips. Mr Groener said they were neighbours for about two years and that "privacy was a big thing for them." Zippy Lomax, a photographer who knew the family, told Oregonlive.com the Harts frequently travelled to festivals and shows and that "Jen and Sarah were the kind of parents this world desperately needs." She said: "I'm sure they were going somewhere special and fun." Source: The Sun UK culled from Olu famous Mr Olumide's Blog |
