Update On Dino Melaye, Escaped Criminals & Police Actions

Posted: 29 Mar 2018 01:22 AM PDT

Following the escape from custody of six suspects involved in the arms case against Senator Dino Melaye, the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, on Wednesday ordered the immediate removal of the Kogi State Commissioner of Police, Ali Janga.

He also redeployed the Commander, Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad in the state, the Divisional Police Officer 'A' Division, Lokoja and other police officers implicated in the escape for negligence, dereliction of duty and gross misconduct.

The police is set to take more actions.

The IG in a statement by the police spokesman, Jimoh Moshood, in Abuja, explained that the policemen had been detained and were facing serious disciplinary action.

The suspects- Kabiru Seidu a.k.a. Osama, Nuhu Salisu a.k.a. Small, Aliyu Isa, Adams Suleiman, Emmanuel Audu and Musa Mohammed, reportedly escaped on Wednesday morning despite being guarded by 13 policemen at the 'A' Division, Lokoja.

The police had alleged that Melaye contracted Seidu and his gang as political thugs, adding that the lawmaker met with the suspect on Airport Road, Abuja inside his (Melaye's) car in December, 2017.

Seidu was said to have confessed to the police investigative team that Melaye gave him a bag containing an AK47 rifle, two pump action guns and N430,000 to share with his boys.

Shortly before he was removed, the Kogi CP had in a statement declared the fugitives wanted, including Melaye and Mohammed Audu, noting that they had been put on the red alert of the International Police.

"Consequently, all the six suspects, Senator Dino Melaye and Mohammed Audu were put on red alert by the INTERPOL for immediate arrest any where we see them," the CP stated.

Announcing Janga's removal, the IG directed Esa Ogbu, Commissioner of Police, Federal Operations, Force Headquarters, Abuja, to immediately proceed to Kogi State and take charge of the command.

He also drafted the IGP's Intelligence Response Team and Special Tactical Squad, personnel of the Force Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department to work with the state command for immediate re-arrest of the escaped suspects.

The statement said, "CP Esa Sunday Ogbu, Commissioner of Police, Federal Operations, Force Headquarters, Abuja has been directed by the IGP to immediately proceed and take over as the new Commissioner of Police, Kogi State Police Command.

"Furthermore, on the order of the IGP, the IGP's Intelligence Response Team and Special Tactical Squad, Personnel of the Force Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department have already arrived in Kogi State to work with the police personnel in the state for immediate re-arrest of the escaped suspects.

"They are to also carry out detailed investigations into the escape and bring all those involved to justice," the force added.

Meanwhile, Melaye has threatened to sue the IG, if he failed to produce the two main suspects in his gun-running trial by the police within 48 hours.

The lawmaker, who is representing Kogi West Senatorial District, issued the threat at the plenary on Wednesday.

The embattled senator raised a point of order to inform the Senate that the suspects had escaped from custody ahead of his (lawmaker's) arraignment before a court in Kogi State on Wednesday.

Melaye said he had already informed his lawyers on the legal action against the police.

The lawmaker said, "The two suspects in my case who said I gave them guns and money; this morning, there was a reported case in Lokoja of a jailbreak at 5am and the two suspects have escaped.

"We were all supposed to appear before the Lokoja High Court this morning. Lo and behold, my lawyers were in court by 9am and the case was called, and the prosecutor of the Nigeria Police could not produce the two accused persons.

"Instead of producing the two accused persons, they asked the judge to issue a bench warrant for my arrest. But the judge refused to grant their prayer. The judge said despite the fact that I have not been served, I sent representatives to the court while the main and principal accused persons were absent in court. So, she could not issue a bench warrant for my arrest. The matter has been adjourned to May 10."

Melaye asked the police to provide the suspects "either dead or alive" within 48 hours.

"The police must as a matter of urgency produce these two persons. Failure to do so, I am going to sue the IG for intimidation, harassment, blackmail and mental assault," he said.

He ended his presentation by singing a Christian song in pidgin English, "This kind God o, I never see your kind o; this kind God o, blessed be your holy name."

The Senate President, Bukola Saraki, while ruling on the matter, chided Melaye over his conduct when making presentations in the chamber.

He urged the lawmaker to always act like an elder statesman by virtue of his position as a senator.

Saraki said, "Distinguished Senator Dino Melaye, please, we do appreciate your sentiments and emotions but you must show respect also in the way you make your addresses, with due respect. You're an elder statesman representing a constituency."

He added, "Your point is noted and I think the major issue here is that all our institutions must continue to ensure that we all do our best to protect this democracy. We are making a mockery of ourselves with these issues you have raised, if they are true. I hope that the police will come out on some of these things."
The police authority said they are determined to get Dino and the fleeing suspects.

You Have Failed Nigerians, Atiku slams Buhari's Government

Posted: 29 Mar 2018 12:52 AM PDT

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar on Tuesday declared his intention to contest the position of the President.

Atiku made this declaration when he led some leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party to the Government House in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.

This is as the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, said Nigerians must take up the responsibility of sacking the "non-performing" APC Federal Government in 2019.

Atiku and other PDP leaders were in the state to consult with chieftains of the party in Rivers State.

Atiku said that he was offering himself to set the country on the path of growth after "the serial failure of the APC."

He said that since 2015, the APC Federal Government had destroyed the education, health and infrastructural sectors through poor budgetary allocations and releases.

"Since 2015, we have not seen a 100-kilometre road constructed by the APC Federal Government anywhere in the country," Atiku said.

He pointed out that the APC Federal Government had destroyed the foundation of unity and cohesion of the country.

"I have never seen Nigeria so divided along religious, ethnic and regional lines. This division is as a result of the mismanagement of the APC," the former Vice-President added.

The presidential aspirant expressed the need for the unity of the country, saying that no component part of the country could progress alone.

Atiku urged the Rivers PDP stakeholders to support his ambition to emerge as the party's presidential candidate.

Story of Final Year Female Student Killed At Her Birthday Party

Posted: 29 Mar 2018 12:22 AM PDT

A final year Banking and Finance student of the Imo State University (IMSU), Miss Kelechi Assumpta Ibeh, has been killed. She was shot dead by yet-to-be identified gunmen when she was marking her 23rd birthday.

What actually happened?

EKENE AHANEKU (600-Level Medicine and Surgery) and KEN EBEREOGU (400-Level Political Science) report.

A final year student of the Imo State University (IMSU), Miss Kelechi Assumpta Ibeh, marked her 23rd birthday in a big way last Thursday. It was her last.

The Banking and Finance student was shot dead by suspected secret cult members, who allegedly stormed her hostel where she held a party to mark the day.

The incident happened on Douglas Road in Owerri, the Imo State capital.

It was gathered that Kelechi was shot at close range as she was about cutting her birthday cake. The motive for the killing has been a subject of controversy. Some speculated that she was targeted allegedly because of her boyfriend's involvement in a deadly fight between two cult groups in the school.

Some eyewitnesses said the assailants were armed robbers. The late Kelechi was said to have been shot after she refused to submit her mobile phone to the assailants.

The Department of Banking and Finance was thrown into mourning when the news of her death broke. Her colleagues were shocked because the late Kelechi was said to have posted pictures of her birthday party on the social media moments before she was killed.

CAMPUSLIFE gathered that there was a fight between members of two cult groups on Douglas Road on Wednesday evening. It was learnt that members of a rival group returned to the area in search of their opponents, unleashing terror on residents and passersby.

Traders hurriedly closed their shops when the armed hoodlums moved to Nwaorie Lane, off Douglas Road, robbing residents at gun point. The hoodlums invaded Edede Street, beside Eastern Basic Nursery and Primary School, also on Douglas Road.

An eyewitness said the assailants pointed a gun at Kelechi, ordering her to submit all her valuables. But, the deceased was said to have refused to drop her phone.

The eyewitness said many of the party guests were injured as they ran for safety. The witness said the hoodlums used coded language, suggesting that they were cult members.

The late Kelechi's family members were still in shock when CAMPUSLIFE visited them. Her elder brother, Stanley, who graduated from the Faculty of Humanities, said the family had reported the matter to the police. The family, he said, wanted the perpetrators brought to book.

Stanley cautioned people against speculations about his sister's death, urging them to wait for the police investigation. He said the funeral of the deceased had not been fixed, because "we are still in shock".

Stanley said: "I am not supposed to be speaking to you (reporters), because we have not got over the shock of the death of my sister. We want people to stop speculating that she was having an affair with a cult member, which is why she was targeted. This is all lies. The fact is that, the true story around my sister's death would be revealed and those who killed her will be brought to justice. She was supposed to graduate this year and some people who have no conscience picked guns, pulled the trigger and killed her on her 23rd birthday. It is painful."

Some of her colleagues recalled how she encouraged them to read during the recently- concluded first semester examination.

"The late Kelechi was the one telling some of us to study hard for our first semester examination, because she didn't want anyone to be delayed in school due to carryover. She read all through the night in preparation for the examination. She didn't come to school for some days because she had been running around for her final year project," her colleague, who gave her name as Chinyere, told CAMPUSLIFE.

President of the IMSU chapter of the National Association of Banking and Finance Students Victor Adiele said: "The news of the death of Kelechi hit us like a stray bullet. It is really a sad period for all graduating Banking and Finance students, our department and the university community at large. In tears and agony, we mourn the death of our colleague murdered by unknown gunmen."

Victor said the late Kelechi could not have been the target of the assailants, noting that she was not known to be a troublemaker.

He said: "She was friendly and played with everyone. She was never known to be a troublemaker. We are still surprised why she became a victim of this gruesome murder."

Stanley Nwakurume, her colleague, said he could have been at the birthday party but for his busy schedule on the fateful day. He described the late Kelechi as a "gentle soul", saying her death should be atoned by bringing the assailants to justice.

The class representative, Obizuo Chibuzo Shedrack, said her colleagues had been in pain since the incident.

He said: "To every one of us, it came as a mystery for her to die on her birthday. The most painful part is that, she died when she was about to graduate after four years in the university. It is a great loss to us."

Heartbreaking Photo Of Beautiful Lady Whose Legs Were Badly Damaged In A Fatal Accident

Posted: 28 Mar 2018 12:02 PM PDT

Stay humble and vigilant. Until January 15, 2008, Chinonso Judith Ericson lived a vivacious life. The future was loaded with amazing promises for her and everything was going on smoothly according to her plans.

But on that fateful day, the 31-year-old lady was involved in an auto crash in Abeokuta while returning to Lagos from the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT), Rivers State. At the time, she was a final-year student of Foreign Languages at the university. And in one fell swoop, her world crashed like a house of cards, shattering her joy in an unquantifiable way.

According to Daily Sun, she has been bedridden for years, even as she has suffered rejection and abandonment on many occasions. Emotional and physical pain has been her uninvited companion over the years.

Ten years after the incident, and having persevered through the vicissitudes that the accident has plunged her into, she has refused to give up amid the adversities that daily torment her.

She and her younger sister escaped the accident that claimed two lives, while other passengers were left with varying degrees of injury. Unlike her sister, who had slight bruises, Ericson had her two legs and spinal cord fractured.

Narrating her travails to the reporter, she said, having been rejected by two hospitals, her parents were forced to take her to a traditional medicine home. But her problem was compounded while there. She lamented that her immediate family has spent about N5 million to get her to stand on her feet. But all the efforts appear to be futile so far.

Her father died one year after the accident, leaving her mother, Comfort, to shoulder Ericson's burden alone, throwing her into huge debts.

Ericson missed the chance of graduating from UNIPORT, but, even in her trouble, and re-enrolled for the JAMB examinations and secured admission to study Peace Studies and Conflict Resolution at the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), where she is now in her final year. But her condition has deteriorated and she needs urgent medical attention.

Said Dr. Nwosu James of Royal Pinnacle Clinic, Surulere, Lagos: "On presentation, patient was ill-looking, emaciated and in obvious painful distress. She could neither stand nor move the lower limbs. There was extensive cellulitis of both lower limbs up to the knees and feet with foul smelling pus oozing out from several open/infected wounds on both lower limbs."

Recalling her travails immediately after the accident, Ericson said: "From Sagamu General Hospital, I was taken to the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Igbobi, in Lagos, and I was rejected because my parents did not consent to the clinical diagnosis, which was to amputate my legs. So, they told my parents to fly me abroad. Again, I was rejected at the Nigerian Railway Hospital, Lagos, where they said they did not have the facility to take care of me."

While combining treatment and studies, she has undergone two surgeries. But she has been told that a third surgery would be needed for her to be fit again.

"I was discharged in 2012. Since I could move about with crutches, I told my mum that I would love to return to school. She refused out of pity for me but l later convinced her that I was mentally fit, that I could cope.

"In 2013, I was admitted into the NOUN, but I took ill again because of the stress. I was in hospital for three months. In 2014, I started all over again and had managed till my final year, which was supposed to be last year.

"In 2016, at my school's function, Dr. Yolanda George Davies, a UN ambassador and founder of Bethel Foundation, saw me and took interest in my case and invited me over to her hospital for examination.

"During the examination, she discovered that the drug I was taking was killing my cells. She became my personal doctor and changed my treatment and within a space of one year, I started having some sensation in my legs and blood started flowing.

"But sometime in November, the pain resurfaced and I can no longer move even with crutches. During a medical check, it was discovered that the wound has been infected and has been overstretched. The doctor said I am due for surgery to be done abroad, and it that it would cost about N7 million."

The patient is being managed on wound dressing but Dr. Davies strongly recommended that she should seek expert management. The doctor said the patient's lower limbs require further corrective surgery, which might include skin grafting and bone lengthening.

Ericson is appealing to kind-hearted Nigerians, corporate and humanitarian organisations as well as the government to come to her aid.

"I have been told that I would need N7 million to undergo two corrective surgeries, skin grafting and bone lengthening, in India to fix my legs," she said.

Anyone willing to assist the lady may contact her on 07063451934 and 09099306574, while her mum could be reached on 08034438335. Payment could also be made to the GTB account number, 0137719366. The account name is Ericson Chinonso Judith.

House Of Reps Members Accused Of Receiving $30,000 Bribe Not To Override Buhari's Veto

Posted: 28 Mar 2018 10:57 AM PDT

The House of Representatives might be embroiled in another drama over accusations its members took $30,000 as bribe to back down from overriding President Buhari's veto.

Members on Wednesday denied an allegation that they received $30,000 bribe to back down from overriding President Muhammadu Buhari's veto on the Electoral Act (amendment) Bill, 2018.

According to Punch, the reps described the allegation as "pure falsehood"intended to intimidate lawmakers to abandon their insistence of changing the sequence of elections ahead of the 2019 polls.

The issue was raised by a member of the house at plenary with Speaker, Mr. Yakubu Dogara referring the issue to the Committee on Ethics/Privileges for investigation.

The member, Mr. Abubakar Danburam-Nuhu, who is from Kano State, said the bribery allegation dented his image as a legislator, "especially when it is not true."

Buhari had rejected the controversial amendment, which sought to change the order of elections by placing the presidential poll last. He withheld his assent to the bill.

But, the House in particular, began a process of passing the bill again for Buhari's signature.

However, before the referral, lawmakers took turns to express their anger over the allegation and threatened to initiate legal actions against the media houses that published the allegation.

Danburam-Nuhu said following the allegation, his constituency had begun to question his integrity, allegedly accusing him of taking bribe.

He added, "I earned my reputation through hard work and I will not sit here and allow people to say things that are not true.

"This matter should be thoroughly investigated by the Committee on Ethics/Privileges."

Another member from Kogi State, Mr. Tajudeen Yusuf, told the House that the allegation was a "fabrication to paint the House in bad light."

He spoke further, "We know the truth. The truth is that there is no such transaction in this House.

"What they are trying to do is to cast aspersions on the integrity of the legislature."

An All Progressives Congress member from Kano State, Mr. Aliyu Madaki, challenged anyone making such an allegation to produce the evidence.

He said, "The questions to ask are: 'bribe by whom? In whose interest? If we are to veto the President, is it not part of the powers of the legislature?'

"It is wrong to assume that everybody is corrupt and everyone accepts bribe.

"Let me state that no amount of intimidation and threats will stop us from doing what is right. So long as our constituencies support us, we will do it."

A member from Abia State, Mr. Uzoma Nkem-Abonta, asked whose interest the lawmakers would be serving by reversing a bill they had long passed.

"Who is afraid of the elections sequence? We must complete this change. We were not influenced when we passed the bill. Why is someone now saying that dollars are being used to change it again?"

But, the Leader of the House, Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila, said a preferred line of action was to sue the media organisations that published the alleged bribery.

Gbajabiamila argued that suing the media houses and their reporters was the only way to stop what he called "incessant attacks" on the National Assembly.

He added, "This is a matter for litigation. It is the only way to stop the incessant attacks on the National Assembly.

"Bribery and corruption are criminal offences punishable by a term of imprisonment. The only defence in this matter is truth and proof.

"We are about going home for Easter. Before long, our constituents will come to us to ask for their own share of a bribe that does not exist."

However, Dogara directed that the matter should first be investigated by the Committee on Ethics/Privileges to guide the House on what course of action to take in a law court.

"It is a matter of privilege. By our rules, matters of privilege are investigated by the Committee on Ethics and Privileges," the Speaker said.

Update On IPOB: Court Orders Senator Abaribe To Produce Nnamdi Kanu On June 26 Or Be Jailed

Posted: 28 Mar 2018 10:12 AM PDT

Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High court sitting in Abuja, on Wednesday gave Senator Enyinaya Abaribe till June 26, 2018 to provide leader of proscribed Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu in court or risk going to prison.

The trial Judge adjourned till June 26, 2018 after the court ordered the prosecution to serve the sureties with an earlier order of court demanding them to appear in court and explain the whereabouts of Kanu or show cause why they should not forfeit their bail bond.

According to Tribune, Abaribe who is representing Abia South Senatorial District, Immanuel El-Shalom a Jewish Chief High Priest and a Chartered Accountant residing in Abuja, Mr Tochukwu Uchendu, had on April 28, entered an undertaken to produce Kanu before the court to face his trial, and deposited a whooping sum of N100 million each.

When the matter was called yesterday, counsel to the sureties observed that the court order had not been served on their clients to enable them prepare for their defence.

Counsel to Abaribe, Chukwuma Umeh (SAN), whose submission was adopted by others urged the court to direct that an enrol order be issued and served on his client by the prosecution.

This, he submitted, was in the spirit of a fair hearing as enshrined in section 36 of the 1999 constitution.

According to him, "I apply that a proper thing be done, that is for a summon to be issued and served on the sureties for them to show cause why their bail bond should not be forfeited.

"The prosecution ought to have taken further steps to obtain an enrol order served on them. This is because a court order that is not served cannot be used against them as it is not binding on them until it is served on them," he said.

Both Franklin Chude, who appeared for Tochukwu Uchendu, one of the sureties and Alloy Ejimakor, counsel to Emmanuel El-Shalom, aligned themselves with the submission of Umeh.

However, Chude drew the court's attention to an application he filed seeking the setting aside of the ruling of the court, adding that the prosecution counsel has not filed a counter affidavit to the application.

Justice Nyako, however, observed that the said application referred to by Chude was not in the court's file.

Responding, prosecution counsel, Shuaibu Labaran urged the court to discountenance the submissions of the applicants and proceed with the business of the day, which he said was for the sureties to show cause why they should not forfeit their bail bond.

In a brief ruling, Justice Nyako ordered that "The sureties are to be served with an enrol order of the court to show cause why their bail bonds should not be forfeited and or produce the 1st defendant (Kanu) in court or in the alternative go to prison."

It would be recalled that prosecution counsel, following the failure of Kanu to appear in court to face his trial, had in an application asked the court to order that the three sureties produce the first defendant or should be made to appear before the court on the next adjourned date to show cause why their bail bond should not be forfeited.

Kanu who is the 1st defendant is facing four out of the five-count amended charge preferred against him and four others, whose trial has since been separated from that of Kanu.

It will be recalled that Justice Nyako had in a ruling on April 25, released Kanu on bail after he had spent a year and seven months in detention, though the court okayed his co-defendants to remain in prison custody.

Consequently, Abaribe and the two others had on April 28, entered an undertaken to produce Kanu before the court to face his trial, and deposited a whooping sum of N100m each.

However, Kanu's whereabouts have remained unknown after the military attacked his hometown in Abia State last year, a development that has placed his sureties at risk of being sent to prison or forfeiting their bail bond.

Young Man Shares Story of How SARS Almost Damaged His Eyes

Posted: 28 Mar 2018 08:27 AM PDT

A young man has given thanks to God following a nasty incident with operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

He also shared photos on social media with one of his eyes covered with a plaster and wool.

Below is how he reported the unfortunate incident:

"Can you see SARS almost break my eyes this evening but I thank God I survive.

"I was passing when two SARS men grabbed me from the back. They told me to raise my hands so that they could search me.

"I told them that before they searched me, they should allow me to search myself so that nothing incriminating would be planted on me.

"They disagreed and began to search me. They brought out only my handkerchief. As one of them wanted to put it back into my pocket, I told him to hold on because I did not want him to add anything to it.

"As I did that, a wrap of hemp fell. When that happened, one of them quickly picked it. They ordered me to enter the car they brought, but I refused.

"A crowd gathered and asked where they were taking me to. Four of them began to drag me and I asked them what my offence was. As they were dragging me, I struggled with them.

"They stripped me n*ked and began to pull my manhood, but I did not relent. I refused to follow them because I believe I did nothing wrong.

"Two of them later brought out machetes and rifles. I told them that if they wanted to shoot me, they should go ahead because I was sure I did not commit any offence.

"As we were struggling, some wraps of Indian hemp fallen off their pockets. They used the machetes to cut my body and tried to handcuff me; but I told them they could not handcuff me."

Many people have condemned the SARS operatives for their brutality.

How We Recovered N2.4b & $115,000 From Ex-NAF Chief, Amosu's House - EFCC Reveals

Posted: 28 Mar 2018 04:12 AM PDT

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission said on Tuesday it had recovered N2.4bn and $115,000 from a former Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Adesola Amosu, who is being tried for an alleged fraud of N22.8bn.

An investigator with the anti-graft agency, Tosin Owobo, told the Federal High Court in Lagos on Tuesday that the agency recovered the $115,000 in cash from Amosu's house.

The N2.4bn, Owobo said, was recovered as bank draft, while the anti-graft agency also recovered N383m from his wife.

Owobo appeared as a prosecution witness before Justice Mohammed Idris, who is presiding over the trial of Amosu and 10 others.

Those standing trial with Amosu are Air Vice Marshal Jacob Adigun and Air Commodore Gbadebo Olugbenga.

Joined with them in the charges are eight companies, which they allegedly used to siphon the N22.8bn from the coffers of the Nigerian Air Force.

The companies are Delfina Oil and Gas Limited, McAllan Oil and Gas Limited, Hebron Housing and Properties Company Limited, Trapezites BDC, and Fonds and Pricey Limited.

Led in evidence by the prosecutor, Rotimi Oyedepo, Owobo added, "About N100m was recovered from the third defendant, Air Commodore Gbadebo.

"Funds were also left over in the St. Solomon's UBA account, recovered through the first defendant's wife.

"About N383m was recovered through the first defendant's wife. The first defendant (Amosu) also refunded two bank drafts of N2.4bn in our Lagos and Abuja offices. We recovered $115,000 in one of the first defendant's residences."

Owobo listed the recovered vehicles to include a bulletproof Lexus LX 570, a bulletproof Landcruiser Sports Utility Vehicle and a Toyota Avalon.

He added, "Various landed properties and buildings were recovered from the second defendant."

Justice Idris adjourned further proceedings in the case till April 18.
