IG Of Police In Trouble For Disobeying President Buhari's Order?

Posted: 13 Mar 2018 04:18 AM PDT

President Muhammadu Buhari told a town hall meeting in Makurdi on Monday that the Inspector-general of Police, Idris Ibrahim has some query to answer as to why he violated his order to relocate to Benue state, following the killings of 73 villagers by herdsmen.

The killings happened on New Year's Day and amidst national outrage President Buhari on 9 January, ordered Idris to relocate to Benue state.

President Buhari was told by Governor Ortom that Idris did not spend even 24 hours in the state, as he moved to neighbouring Nasarawa state, thus violating President Buhari's order.

President Buhari was surprised that Idris breached his order.

NAN reports that Mr President said he would ask Idris to explain why he observed the order in the breach, on his return to Abuja.

"What I did was to call him and give him (a) directive. And I didn't know he moved here (Benue State) and didn't spend (time) and then move to Nasarawa. It's only now that I am knowing that. But I know I dispatched him here," the President said.

"At every level, you have to be loyal to people below you. Whether that person is loyal to you or not is totally a different thing," President Buhari said.

Yahoo Boy Who Defrauded A Firm N10m Finally Nabbed By EFCC

Posted: 13 Mar 2018 03:38 AM PDT

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Lagos Zonal office, on Monday arraigned a suspected Internet fraudster, Ogungbile Oluwaseun, before Justice O. A.Williams of the Lagos State High Court sitting in Ikeja on a two-count charge bordering on unauthorised access to computer materials to the tune of Ten Million Naira (N10,000,000).

The defendant allegedly defrauded a company, Cenoux Express Limited, of the money by sending fraudulent electronic messages to Guaranty Trust Bank, thereby facilitating the payment of the money into his own account.

One of the counts reads: "That you, Ogungbile Oluwaseun (a.k.a Emmanuel Oluwaseun), on or about the 19th day of April, 2012, at Lagos, within the Ikeja Judicial Division, with intent to defraud, intentionally caused a computer to perform unauthorised access to a programmed data held by Guaranty Trust Bank, wherein you sent fraudulent electronic messages to Guaranty Trust Bank causing a fraudulent transfer of the sum of N5,000, 000. 00 (Five Million Naira) from account No. 5012272664110 belonging to Cenoux Express to your own account and committed an offence contrary to Section 385 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2011."

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to him. In view of his plea, the prosecution counsel, Nkereuwem Anana, prayed the court for a trial date and asked that the defendant be remanded in prison custody.

The defence counsel, J.J. Isijola, however, informed the court of an application for bail on behalf of his client. He also prayed for a short date for the hearing of the application.

Consequently, Justice Williams adjourned the case to March 19, 2018 for hearing of the bail application and ordered that the defendant be returned to the EFCC custody.

Why I Exposed How Much We Earn As Senators - Shehu Sani

Posted: 13 Mar 2018 03:38 AM PDT

The senator representing Kaduna Central in the National Assembly, Shehu Sani, has opened up on why he decided to reveal the actual running costs received monthly by senators of the federal republic of Nigeria.

While speaking with BBC, Senator Sani said;
"I decided to burst it open. It was a moral issue," he said, adding that the National Assembly is being run with little accountability about how the money is spent.

The lawmaker said that he wants the illegal payment to be scrapped so that the legislative arm of government will be attractive only to people who can contribute ideas.

"The National Assembly is one of the most non-transparent organs of government. It pricked my conscience and I decided to burst the bubble and open the National Assembly to public scrutiny.

"If the expenses payment system was ended then parliament would only be attractive to people who contribute ideas," he told BBC.

He also accused the National Assembly of being one of the most non-transparent organs of government.

Recall that the senator had in an interview revealed that he and his colleagues receive N13.5 million monthly as "running cost", aside a N750,000 monthly consolidated salary and allowances which they also receive.

His revelation is the first by a lawmaker from the Senate since the clamour by Nigerians for a full disclosure of lawmakers' earnings.

What was supposed to be a happy day turned out to be a sad one. A bride-to-be in Arizona has so much to worry about after her wedding day turned out to be a sad day following her arrest en-route to the solemnization venue, for allegedly Driving Under the Influence (DUI).

Marana police said 32-year-old Amber Young triggered a three-car collision that sent someone to a hospital with minor injuries at about 10:30 a.m., on Monday.

An officer suspected Young, who was wearing a white, floor-length dress, was driving impaired.

She was handcuffed and taken to a police station.

The bride submitted to a blood test and signed a criminal citation for DUI before she was released to her fiancee, according to Sgt. Chriswell Scott of the Marana Police Department.

"This could've turned out way worse than it did," Scott said.

"It's supposed to be the happiest day of her life, and this just goes out as a reminder as to why you should never drive while impaired."

Lagos NYSC Reacts To Female Corper's Alleged Suicide

Posted: 13 Mar 2018 03:08 AM PDT

The National Youth Service Corps Coordinator in Lagos State, Mohammed Momoh, has opened up on the viral report that a female corps member allegedly committed suicide.

NYSC ruled out suicide in the death of a corps member, Nneka Odili, who was killed in a train accident on Thursday in Lagos.

Momoh told journalists in Lagos on Monday that there was no trace of suicide in the tragic incident.

The deceased, Nneka Odili, was allegedly hit by a train on March 8, at Ikeja Train Station.

She died at 6.55 p.m. at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) on the same day.

According to the NYSC coordinator, the late corps member did not exhibit any sign of depression or anxiety that could lead to suicide.

He expressed shock and dismay at the mysterious circumstances leading to her death after receiving her acceptance letter at her place of primary assignment.

Mr. Momoh said she was posted to the 9th Brigade, Ikeja Cantonment, Maryland in Lagos.

"There is no way the late corps member would have committed suicide, considering events that preceded her death," he said.

According to him, late Ms. Odili, with NYSC code number 17B1169, was a graduate of Health Education from University of Port-Harcourt.

She was born on July 11, 1988 in Rivers.

"The late corps member was posted to the 9th Brigade on March 6 and was given acceptance letter on March 8.

"She was said to be on her way to complete her documentation at Onigbongbo Local Government, when she was hit by a train, at the Ikeja Train Station.

"There is no way she could have committed suicide, considering what transpired less than 24 hours to her death.

"A search on her Facebook page, in the early hours of March 8 when she died, revealed that she uploaded 39 pictures, titled `happy mood`.

"There is nothing like committing suicide; it is equally erroneous for people to say that she was wearing a headphone when the incident happened.

"She was with her small phone and nothing like headphone or earpiece was found at the scene of the accident,'' Mr. Momoh explained.

NAN reports that the coordinator described late Ms. Odili as a nice, loving and very active corps member during the orientation course.

He said she was the best volleyball player and her team was billed to represent Lagos State at the NYSC sports festival coming up later in the year. May her soul RIP!

Two Men Arrested For Beheading 5-Year-Old Boy

Posted: 13 Mar 2018 02:43 AM PDT

The long arm of the law has finally caught up with two men who reportedly beheaded a little boy and tried to sell his head to a spiritualist.

The mother of the five-year-old boy who was beheaded at Sokoban in Kumasi area of Ghana has appealed to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the Attorney General Department to punish the perpetrators in equal measure.

30-year-old Janet Salifu believes this is the only remedy that will lessen her pain and give her some respite.

Two suspects are currently in police custody for their involvement in the beheading of the five-year-old.

Relatives and neighbours sat close to Janet Salifu and with their hands supporting their jaws, they consoled and sympathized with a mother in deep pain after the head of her five-year-old son, Silas Kunsana was found in the possession of the suspects on Wednesday.

The suspects later led police to retrieve the torso in an uncompleted building.

Janet and her family live in a slum, behind the Asanteman Senior High School in Kumasi.

She moved to Kumasi with her husband from Nadowli in the Upper West Region to seek a better living.

Her plans to start a new life for herself and her family were devastated after news that her only male child, a twin, was beheaded.

In a shaky voice, she called for justice when she spoke to Citi News.

"The perpetrators should be killed the same way they killed my son. They used a knife to cut off his head and I want the same to be done to them. I am in grief and I have not even eaten for five days. If Government does not treat the perpetrators in the same manner, I will not be a happy mother. The situation might even lead to my death," she lamented.

Janet called on the police service to expedite processes to release the beheaded body for burial.

She also appealed to the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Suame Constituency and Government to help her financially to lessen the burden on her.

Her first two daughters, who are also twins, are in Senior High School (SHS).

Saguster and Sagut Dakorah could not hold their grief either and also called for justice.

Family calls for support

Head of the family, Doodah Babakparanaa also appealed for financial support from Government and other benevolent bodies for the burial of the five-year-old and for the necessary rites to be performed.

"Even if the body is released to us for burial, it is going to be difficult for us financially. So we are calling on Government to assist us", he appealed.

Police investigate spiritualist

Police in the Ashanti region have begun questioning a spiritualist, Sheik Mohammed Maheey after he alerted police of the act, leading to the arrest of the suspects.

The suspects approached the spiritualist to buy the human head.

The spiritualist accepted to buy the head for GHc 2,500 and secretly alerted the police.

The Police proceeded to the residence of the spiritualist at Suame Zongo and arrested the suspects with the fresh head, which was concealed in a black polythene bag.

Ashanti Regional Police Commander, COP Ken Yeboah said is investigating the role of the spiritualist in the mater.

Silas was picked by the suspects at a game center in the area when he went to play.

Residents in the area want the game center to be closed down.

We’re Negotiating For Release of Dapchi Schoolgirls –Buhari

Posted: 13 Mar 2018 01:48 AM PDT

President Muhammadu Buhari has explained why his administration is being careful in rescuing schoolgirls abducted by Boko Haram from Chibok, Borno and Government Girls Science and Technical College, Daphi in Yobe State.

He told the United States of America Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson, that he prefers to have the girls back alive, hence, government's adoption of negotiation, rather than military option.

He said this at a closed-door meeting with Tillerson, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, yesterday.

This was even as Tillerson described the abduction of the 110 schoolgirls from Daphi as "heartbreaking."

President Buhari added that Nigeria is working in concert with international organisations and negotiators, to ensure that the girls are released.

"We are trying to be careful. It is better to get our daughters back alive," the president reiterated.

He thanked America for assistance in the fight against insurgency, and noted that Nigerian forces are good, "but need assistance in the areas of training and equipment."

President Buhari promised that his administration would continue to do its best to secure the country, and added that he would be in Yobe, later this week, "as part of my condolence and sympathy visits to areas where we have had unfortunate events."

At the meeting, the president pledged free and fair polls in 2019, and recalled how Tillerson's predecessor, John Kerry, visited Nigeria before the 2015 polls, "and he told the party in government then, and those of us in opposition, to behave ourselves, and we did."

N23bn Bribe: EFCC Grills Ex-PDP Chairman, Ali Modu Sheriff

Posted: 13 Mar 2018 01:48 AM PDT

Former national chairman of the People's Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Ali Modu Sheriff was grilled for hours by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) yesterday.

Sources at the commission said, "Yes, it was true he came to honour our invitation, we interacted with him and he was granted bai."

Regardless, he is scheduled to return to the EFCC today, "for more questioning," another source said.

It was gathered that Modu Sherif is expected back today to continue meeting with the operatives who have been investigating the N23 billion disbursed by former Petroleum Resources minister, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke, to allegedly influence the 2015 presidential election in favour of President Goodluck Jonathan.

He headed the Borno state chapter of the Goodluck Campaign Organisation. He allegedly disbursed $115 million (about N23 billion, as at 2015), through the Director of Finance of the Goodluck Jonathan Campaign Organisation, Senator Nenadi Usman, during the build-up to the 2015 presidential election.

Several leading politicians from the PDP and some Independent National Electoral Commision officials have been drilled by the EFCC over their roles in the sharing of the money, while some are already facing trial over the matter.

Sheriff became PDP national chairman after the party lost the 2015 general elections but was sacked by the Supreme Court, last year.

"Don’t Be Misguided", Senate warns INEC over Elections Order

Posted: 13 Mar 2018 01:18 AM PDT

The Senate has warned the Independent National Electoral Commission against being misguided on the extent of the powers of the National Assembly in the amendment to the Electoral Act 2010.

The Senate President, Bukola Saraki, while declaring open a public hearing on the bill seeking to establish the National Electoral Offences Commission on Monday, made reference to the controversy generated by the recent amendment to Section 25 of the Electoral Act, which seeks to re-order the sequence of the general elections.

INEC had expressed its intention to challenge the amendment in court but later made a U-turn.

Speaking at the hearing conducted by the Senate's Joint Committee on INEC; and Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, Saraki stated that the National Assembly had powers to legislate over the electoral body and other agencies of government.

Saraki, who was represented by the Deputy Majority Leader, Senator Bala Ibn Na'Allah, also pointed out that the lawmakers could not be involved in any legislation that would violate the constitution.

"Of recent, there have been arguments on who has power to do what," he said, adding that Nigeria had a lot of people who knew how to go to court to get all kinds of judgments.

"INEC should be cautious of who it is listening to. We would not sit anywhere this constitution will be violated. It is necessary we caution ourselves. We need this country, we love this country," Saraki said.

The Senate President also decried that some political aspirants and parties were already campaigning when INEC had yet to declare electioneering open.

He said, "The Senate in particular would be very worried, if INEC begins to condone the actions of some political parties. You have not declared campaigns open, and some are already campaigning."

Saraki asked INEC to exercise its powers and sanction such persons or parties.

The Punch reports that INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, in his presentation to the committee, disclosed that the electoral umpire currently had about 1,080 cases in courts relating to the 2015 general elections.

He added that the commission had received 124 case files of electoral offenders from the police, out of which 60 had been prosecuted.

Yakubu, who expressed support for the establishment of the Electoral Offences Commission, stated that INEC could not effectively prosecute electoral offenders and focus on its enormous responsibilities simultaneously.

The electoral body's tasks, he said, included registration and regulation of political parties as well as monitoring of parties' congresses and finances.

The INEC boss, however, noted that the Secretary of the NEOC should be appointed by the commission and not by the President as being proposed.

He also warned against appointment of ex-officio members, while calling for a proper definition of "electoral offences."

Female Banker's Family Alleges Suicide, Husband Releases Her 'Suicide Note’

Posted: 13 Mar 2018 12:48 AM PDT

Mr. Umukoro Akpobaro, the husband of late bank worker, Peace, who allegedly committed suicide at their home at Iwhrekpokpor, Ughelli, Delta State, has denied having a hand in her death.

This is just as the deceased's family accused Umukoro of masterminding the death of their daughter, saying he had always threatened to kill her.

It was reported that Peace, who worked with a new generation bank in Ughelli, allegedly took her own life over her husband's alleged infidelity.

The 32-year-old mother of two was reported to have died after allegedly taking insecticide when she returned home from work.

But Umukoro, who spoke to The Punch on phone, said the allegations against him were unfounded, adding that he was in good terms with the deceased before she died.

He said the late Peace had complained of some debts she incurred after "overposting" funds to some customers.

"One happened in January and the amount was about N100,000. She called me and asked for my help and I sent N50,000 to her. I told her that I would send the balance when another one happened in February. She complained that she was getting tired of the debts," he added.

Umukoro, a journalist with a broadcast station, claimed that his wife sent him a message on a social media application, Whatsapp, asking him to take care of their children, a few hours to her death.

The chat Umukoro screen grabbed and sent to Punch read:

Peace (11: 27am): Migwo, can I get a loan from you or anywhere? To pay N20,000 back monthly; I need N100,000.

Umukoro (12:08am- 12:21pm): Verendo, what happened?

Peace (12:43pm-2:21pm): Nothing. I need the money to clear my debts. I'll pay back please, every 24th. I don't have anyone to ask. Please assist me. I don't have peace. I'm just managing to keep myself together. You didn't answer me? The problems I'm facing are too much. Please take note. I didn't commit adultery. Ancestors didn't kill me. I'm tired of life. Challenges of life won me. Hence I'm killing myself. Please give me a befitting burial. The gate and door are open. I died as your wife. Bury me well and take care of my kids. Bye.

Umukoro (3:24pm): What is your problem?

Umukoro said he went online one hour after his late wife sent her last message, adding that he became alarmed and called her telephone number, which rang out.

He said he immediately called neighbours who discovered that she had taken Sniper and rushed her to a hospital, adding that she died on the way.

The journalist sent a voice note of a conversation he had with Peace and their children a day to the incident in which they spoke cheerfully.

"That was how we always talked in the evening when she returned from work. I spoke with her and the children. The claim that I called her on the day she died and asked her to come home is not true. Her phone is with the police and we are asking them to check her call records in the last 30 days," he added.

But the family on Monday, said they believed that the husband was responsible for the death of the first class graduate of Accounting of the Delta State University Abraka.

An elder brother of the deceased, Maxwell Johnmark, alleged that Umukoro had once threatened to kill Peace.

He added that the two children left behind by the deceased were witnesses.

He said, "The marriage is about 10 years now. When they gave birth to their second child four years ago and the wife was discharged from the hospital on the third day, he practically drove her out of the house.

"She called my father to come to take her to our family compound. On getting there, my father saw her sitting outside with the newborn baby, who was crying. He felt intimidated because his wife was a first class graduate."

He alleged that on the day the deceased allegedly took Sniper, Umukoro had asked her to come home from work because he wanted to see her.

He added that Peace took permission from her superior with a promise to return in a few minutes, but she never did.

Johnmark noted that five days after his sister died, the husband did not visit the family to formally report the incident.

"The first thing he did after they confirmed to him that his wife was dead was to go on social media to post their marriage pictures and say that his wife was dead. He said his wife died because of N100,000 that she borrowed from the bank. Can somebody kill herself because of N100,000?

"The man had been pushing for a divorce. My sister refused to leave the house because she did not want a divorce. There is the tendency that Umukoro masterminded the death because their children can testify that he had been threatening to kill their mum because she did not want to leave the house," he added.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Andrew Aniamaka, said the matter was being investigated to unravel whether it was a case of homicide or suicide.

He said, "The case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department. Investigation will reveal whether it was suicide or homicide and the result will be communicated to the public. The outcome of our investigation will determine if we are going to arrest anyone connected with the matter."

Beautiful Woman's Legs & Arm Amputated As Doctors Misdiagnosed Her Illness

Posted: 12 Mar 2018 11:08 AM PDT

What a costly mistake. A mother of two lost almost all of her limbs after a hospital failed to spot she was suffering from sepsis.

Magdalena Malec, 31, had to have both of her legs, her right arm and the fingers of her left hand amputated after contracting the disease in hospital.

She also needed a kidney transplant to save her life after being admitted with an ectopic pregnancy.

Bosses at the Luton and Dunstable University Hospital have now apologised for the medical blunder, which they accept could have been completely avoided.

Magdalena said: "Now my life is not a life, it is vegetation — a fight for life.

"I was waiting for six months for the amputation of my limbs, with stinking and decaying legs and arms.

"Nothing will restore what I had. I will never paint my nails again, I will never make a ponytail for my daughter.

"I do not trust doctors and I am very skeptical about all medical appointments and diagnoses."

Magdalena, who is mum to Paulina, nine, and Severin, seven, discovered she was pregnant with her third child in December 2014. But she and her partner, Robert, were devastated to be told just weeks later that she had suffered a miscarriage.

Magdalena continued suffering from heavy bleeding and stomach cramps, but was sent home from A&E with painkillers and anti-sickness tablets.

She returned to the hospital on Christmas Day and was finally told she'd suffered an ectopic pregnancy.

This occurs when a fertilised egg implants itself outside of the womb and requires urgent surgery to remove the affected fallopian tube and unviable foetus.

"I had been in and out of hospital since 22 December 2014 and by the time I was admitted on 25th December for surgery, my pain was unbearable," she said.

"That hospital hurt me badly and I probably will never trust any hospital again."

But while in recovery, Magdalena developed extensive limb ischaemia, which became gangrenous and caused her body tissue to die.

She later learned it was caused by a loss of blood supply due to medical staff not recognising the classical warning signs for sepsis and failing to follow their own sepsis protocol.

Magdalena had to wait six months for surgery to amputate her limbs, and had to return to hospital three times a week for dialysis, with each session lasting up to four hours.

During this time, her relationship with Robert also broke down due to the pressures of her disabilities.

Magdalena, from Luton, Bedfordshire, said: "Nothing will restore what I had. I have been left on my own, starting with re-learning how to walk, comb my hair, eat, and brush my teeth.

"From the very beginning, everything was a big challenge for me. I would wake up and not know what I should do with myself.

"The only thing I dream about is decent living conditions with my disability and prostheses, which will allow me to live as normally as possible.

"My life is continual hospital appointments and each hospital appointment brings sad memories.

"I am susceptible to infections because my immune system is weakened by the medicines I take to support my kidneys.

"I am learning how to live with pain. Going out and coping with the way people look at me is very difficult, and so is self-acceptance."

The NHS has apologised unreservedly for missing all of the classic signs of sepsis that Magdalena was experiencing, and accepts the outcome could have been avoided.

Sepsis is blood poisoning caused by the body's reaction due to an infection and it needs urgent treatment.

Common symptoms include persistently high temperatures, rash and itchiness in the legs, blue and mottled limbs and inability to urinate.

Magdalena has already received an interim payment to help alleviate her financial hardship, but she is expected to receive a further payout in due course.

Her lawyer David Thomas, Clinical Negligence Partner at Simpson Millar solicitors, said: "The catastrophic chain of events which led to Magdalena's near death and horrendous injuries were completely avoidable if the hospital Trust had followed its own sepsis protocol.

"There were a number of missed opportunities or 'red flags' which were not acted upon until it was too late.

"If diagnosed early enough, sepsis is easily treated with antibiotics but despite recent awareness campaigns, mistakes such as this are still happening. It's tragic."

A spokesman for Luton & Dunstable University Hospital added: "There were missed opportunities to recognise the progressive clinical deterioration of Ms Malec and act accordingly, including the timely administration of antibiotics.

"We convey our sincere apologies to Ms Malec and we recognise the care provided fell below the standards we strive for.

"We undertook an investigation to examine what improvements could be put in place, learning's were shared in order to prevent similar cases."

PHOTO: Plane catches fire while landing, at least 40 dead

About 40 people were killed and 23 injured when a Bangladeshi passenger plane crashed near Kathmandu airport Monday, an official said.

"Thirty-one people died at the spot and nine died at two hospitals in Kathmandu," police spokesman Manoj Neupane told AFP, adding another 23 were injured.

There were 67 passengers and four crew on board the US-Bangla Airlines plane from Dhaka.

The plane crashed after catching fire while trying to land.

Witnesses described seeing the plane flying at a low height before crashing onto a football pitch at Nepal's only international airport in the capital, Kathmandu.

Amanda Summers, an American who works in Nepal, watched the crash happen from the terrace of her home office.

"It was flying so low I thought it was going to run into the mountains," she said.

She said it was unclear if it had reached the runway when it landed. "All of a sudden there was a blast and then another blast," she said.

CAN GOD CHANGE PEOPLE?

Posted: 12 Mar 2018 07:18 AM PDT

It's amazing to look back even 10 years ago and see how many things have completely changed, while other things are exactly the same.

Around 10 years ago, I got my first cell phone. And what could I do with it? Call people. Now my phone is smarter than I am. It tells me when to wake up. It tells me how much food I can and should eat. It even reminds me to read my Bible, like it's a better Christian than I am.

Can God change me? And you?

The answer: YES!

The moment we start following Jesus sincerely, every part of us changes;
  • Our words.
  • Our actions.
  • Our thoughts.
  • Desires.
  • Priorities.
  • Attitude.
  • Our relationships.
  • Our life as a whole.
We are no longer the same. God changes us.

Now this might sound like a cute thought — that we're changed by God — but how does it actually happen? Maybe you've wanted to change and you've tried to change. You've asked God to change you but it still seems like you're the exact same person.

So when it comes to being changed by God, here are truths to remember:

The more we grow in our love and relationship with Jesus, and the closer we get to Him, the more He will begin to change us from the inside out.

Instead of being bitter, we'll begin to extend grace.
Instead of doing what we want, we'll begin to follow Jesus and His ways.

Instead of being critical and easily offended about everything, our life will be filled with His joy and His peace.

We'll just begin to want more and more of God in our life, and because of it our life will begin to change for the better.

Some Nigerian University Lecturers Use Research Money To Buy Cars, Drink Beer?

Posted: 12 Mar 2018 04:43 AM PDT

...says prostitutes bribe to graduate
Samson Chijioke Ugwoke, National President of Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU, has accused those saddled with the administration of universities of gradually killing education through corruption.

He claimed that some female students abandon their studies to do prostitution abroad, especially in Italy, but end up graduating, sometimes, with second class upper degree because they bribe lecturers with lorry loads of cement when they come back.

Besides, the SSANU National President, who is the Chairman of Joint Action Committee, JAC, comprising National Association of Academic Technologists, NAAT, Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities and Educational Institutions, NASU, and the SSANU, said some university lecturers use research grant to buy big cars, build houses and drink beer, while little or nothing is done on research.

This, he said, was the reason for the mega rally university non-teaching staff had that took them to the Federal Ministry of Education and the National Assembly where they called for investigation into university administration across the country.

Ngokwe told Vanguard, "The mega rally is to sensitize the public about the plight of the university system as some people are gradually killing education through corruption in Nigeria. They don't want any probe. We have asked government to set up Visitation Panels to all the universities that are overdue, let them study what is happening in the universities and unravel the corruption taking place because they are collecting IGR and they account to nobody.

"We are not even talking about s*x for marks, abuse of young girls and money for marks; when some graduating students make 2:1, some of them are not even in the country, some of them are doing prostitution in Italy but they are getting 2:1.

"When she comes back and sends a lorry load of bags of cement to the lecturer, she will be awarded 'A' in his course. So many unwholesome things are happening in the system.

"Let them investigate the research allowances they get which they are using to buy big cars and building houses and a lot of other works are finished at the beer parlour. By 3 o'clock they are already drinking till 11pm, that is where they do the research.

"These are things we know and nobody is talking. They are at the staff club drinking beer till 10, 11 pm. Is that where they do the research? Let government investigate the research allowances that are given out in the universities".

The union leader pleaded with the National Assembly to wade into corruption in the university system so as to make the place a proper place for education.

We’ll Resist Any Undemocratic Take-over of Government In Nigeria

Posted: 12 Mar 2018 04:33 AM PDT

"Under no circumstances should individuals, no matter how highly placed, should begin to hint of military takeover of government in Nigeria.

This is because most of the social dislocations we experience today, such as corruption, deterioration of power supply, collapse of railway, basterdization of the education system, destruction of the Civil Service, etc, were exacerbated by military dictators."

Organized labour has warned that irrespective of several challenges facing the country, it would resist any illegal and undemocratic takeover of government in Nigeria, saying it was disturbed by some subtle insinuations from some quarters that the military would venture into the politics of the country.

Speaking through the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria, ASCSN, labour cautioned those mooting the idea to desist from throwing Nigeria into anarchy.

The statement said: "It is common knowledge that since the military toppled the democratically elected government of Sir Tafawa Balewa in 1966, suspended the 1963 Federal Constitution and imposed a unitary system of government, the country's growth has been stunted. We are also aware that all democracies in the world including that of the United States of America, Canada, Europe, etc, are not perfect but are still evolving and being improved upon.

"The shortcomings being experienced in building democratic institutions in Nigeria were not peculiar and, with time, some of the flaws would be rectified."
