Many Escape Death As Tanker Falls On Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, Crushes Car

Posted: 14 Mar 2018 03:23 AM PDT

Barely two weeks after a tanker loaded with 33,000 litres of petrol fell at Owode-Iyana Ilogbo axis along Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, another tanker also loaded with the same litres of petrol fell on the road early this morning at Singer Area, Sango-Ota.

The tanker travelling outside Sango-Ota fell at a failed section of the road and crushed a white Hyundai delivery van, which was by its side.

The content of the tanker spilled on the road and drainage channels around the area, forcing vehicles to be diverted to the opposite lane, which led to a gridlock.

The ill-fated tanker fell at a section directly in front of a Conoil filling station. But the timely arrival of security and traffic agencies to the scene save what would been a disaster, as okada riders and street urchins had besieged the scene with various sizes of kegs and other containers, ready to scoop petrol.

But policemen, personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps and the Federal Road Safety Corps, were on ground and they kept the intruders at bay.

The Public Relations Officer of TRACE, Babatunde Akinbiyi, told Punch on phone that the incident occurred between 5.30am and 6am.

He said, "The tanker fell this morning between 5:30 am and 6 am but the area had been cordoned off to avoid any form of disaster. Apart from TRACE, the Police, Federal Road Safety Corps and firefighters are on ground at the scene, to prevent people from coming to scoop petrol, which is quite dangerous.

"Efforts are being made to remove the tanker and the Hyundai van from the scene."

So Sad! Man Who Traveled To Bury His Uncle, Returns To Find His Son Killed By Police In Lagos

Posted: 14 Mar 2018 03:23 AM PDT

A police sergeant attached to Badia Police Station has been accused of shooting to death a 16-year-old boy, Emmanuel Chukwu, at Ijora Badia area of Lagos.

Father of the deceased, Mr. Uzor Chukwu, was said to have travelled to Ebonyi State to bury his uncle, while his son was shot dead by police in Lagos.

The incident occurred last Saturday.

It was learnt by New Telegraph that Emmanuel, who was a student of Randle Secondary School, Apapa, was at their apartment about 8a.m. at No, 7 Fadaina Street.

He heard the noise of protesters calling on policemen at their station to release a woman accused of kidnapping a toddler.

The police rescued the suspected kidnapper at Giwa Street when she was about to be set ablaze by some angry youths and took her to their station at Badia.

But the youth went with the policemen to their station, demanding the suspect be released to them.

A resident, who gave his name as Moshood, said Chukwu was sleeping in their apartment and came out to see what was happening when a stray bullet hit him.

He said: "Immediately the suspected kidnapper was arrested and the baby was rescued by some youths in the community. They descended on the woman and tried to set her ablaze. But some elders phoned the police who came to rescue her and take her to their station. It was the shout of the protesters that woke the deceased.

"Emmanuel was standing on the balcony of their house, catching a glimpse of what was happening at the station, when a stray bullet fired by the police to disperse the protesters hit him in the chest."

Another resident, Mr. John Idowu, said Emmanuel's death was unfortunate in, as he was not part of the protesters.

The distraught mother of the deceased, Mrs. Ijeoma Chukwu, described the policemen as cruel and heartless human beings.

She said: "I am yet to believe that my son is no more. My son was asleep and woken up by the noise of people shouting that the woman should be released. He ran out to see what was happening when the stray bullet him.

"I was working in the kitchen, when someone came to call me that my son had been shot and I rushed into the bedroom to check him where he was sleeping only to discover that he had left the room without my knowledge. I was told it was after a few minutes he got to the balcony that the stray bullet hit him.

"To my surprise, when I rushed outside, I saw the policemen carrying the remains of my son to their station. I ran after them. On getting to the station, I told them I am the mother of the boy that they should allow me see him. They refused and threatened to shoot me if I did not leave the place.

"I cried but they didn't listen to me until they took his remains to the mortuary. Unfortunately, my husband has travelled home for the burial of his uncle but his brothers have informed him. Even my husband's brothers who went to the station, the policemen also threatened to shoot them if they did not leave."

When contacted for confirmation, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Chike Oti, said police did not shoot anybody.

He said: "Policemen from Badia Station received a distress call that some hoodlums were about to lynch a woman for offence that was not yet established rescued and brought her to their station.

"The hoodlums mobilised themselves and went to attack the policemen and tried to burn down the station, it was part of the dangerous weapons they were using that hit the boy.

"Immediately, the hoodlums noticed what happened to the boy, they took to their heels. The policemen went to take the boy to the hospital where he was later confirmed dead."

Woman Conspires With Her Daughter To Sell Her Grandson In Lagos

Posted: 14 Mar 2018 02:53 AM PDT

Operatives of the Zone 2 Police Command, Onikan, Lagos, have started investigation into the alleged trafficking of a day old baby on Jakande Estate, in the Oshodi Isolo area of Lagos State.

The baby was taken from the mother, Blessing Emmanuel, by the grandmother, Patience, on the day he was born after they conspired together to sell the boy.

He was reportedly handed over to one Ijeoma Okechukwu, a former neighbour of the Emmanuels on Shola Adewunmi Street.

A few days after Okechukwu took the baby, she was said to have paid Blessing and her mother N250,000.

22-year-old Blessing lied to residents that her baby was dead.

She later opened up to a church member, Comfort Ogwuebu, who helped her family with accommodation, that her child was with Okechukwu.

Ogwuebu reportedly alerted policemen from the Zone 2 Police Command, who arrested the suspect and recovered the child.

The woman, who is a lawyer, told Punch during a parade on Tuesday that she was initially told that the baby died from convulsion and epilepsy.

She said, "I assisted her family to secure accommodation in an uncompleted building beside my house on the estate. Sometime in October, Blessing's brother announced that her sister had been delivered of a baby boy and I rejoiced with him. In the evening, I saw her mother and congratulated her. But she gave me a stare and left. I wondered if I said anything wrong.

"The next Sunday, I saw the daughter in church and apologised for not coming to greet the baby in the house. She said there was no baby. I asked if the baby died, but she said her mother took the baby from her. She said he was with her aunt who fed him with milk and water. I was suspicious.

"A week later, her mother called me and apologised for her reaction when I congratulated her. She said after Blessing was delivered of the baby, she (Blessing) was sick and even the baby was as small as a rat. She said the baby was so ill that he had to be taken to a herbal centre where they said he had epilepsy and convulsion. She said the baby had died from the illness."

Ogwuebu said she was not satisfied with the explanation and prodded Blessing, who confessed that the baby was sold to Okechukwu.

She said she alerted the police and Okechukwu, who was her former tenant, was arrested.

Blessing said that she had earlier had a child for her boyfriend, one Valentine, who got her pregnant the second time.

She said she resisted the pressure to abort the pregnancy because she didn't want to die.

The Akwa Ibom State indigene said she was bothered about what would become of the baby when her mother told her Okechukwu had agreed to take him after delivery.

She said, "I gave birth in the morning. She (Okechukwu) came at night and asked if my mother had discussed with me and I said yes. She said she would give me some money to start a business. She paid for the hospital bill.

"When we reached home, we called her and she said she had taken the baby to her sister's house at Ejigbo. I went there twice to see my baby. The third time I wanted to go, I learnt that she had relocated to a new place, which I didn't know. From that time, we only talked on the telephone.

"After about a week, she invited me to an eatery around the estate. There were two policemen with her. I asked where my baby was, but she said he was fine. She gave me N250,000 and asked me to sign a paper that I won't disturb her in the future."

Blessing said while part of the money was used to pay for the school fees of her three siblings and first child, some were used to settle family debts.

She said the rest of the money, which was kept in the kitchen, was stolen.

The suspect told Punch that her pastor's wife asked her to pray for forgiveness after learning the whole truth, while her pastor only counselled her.

Blessing said the bubble burst when her troubled conscience made her to confess to Ogwuebu, who had shown concern about her deteriorating health condition.

Her mother, Patience, 39, said she had been weighed down by the burden of caring for her three children and Blessing's first child before she came home with a second unwanted pregnancy.

The widow woman said she saw Okechukwu's intervention as an answer to prayer, adding that she thought her assistance would help the family out of poverty.

The alleged buyer, Okechukwu, 35, said she was only helping the family.

She noted that the matter got to the police because her former landlady, Ogwuebu, had scores to settle with her over the manner she left her house.

"It was even my landlady that initiated the whole thing. She said since the family could not take care of the baby that I could keep him. She was the one that discovered that the girl was pregnant.

"I was not interested in only the child, but in the welfare of the family. I am amazed that something I did in good faith could turn this way. The girl never told any policeman that her child was missing. I don't get it that somebody wanted the police to resolve an issue because I refused to stay in a house that has 17 dogs and I breached some agreements?" she said.

She said she relocated to the Ikeja area in January and had no intention of keeping the child away from the mother.

Asked if she was not driven by desperation to have a child after three years of marriage, the Anambra State indigene said she once had a child that died, adding that she was not desperate.

The Zone 2 Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Dolapo Badmos, said the case involved obtaining money under false pretences, threat to life and child trafficking.

She noted that the policemen alleged to have been involved in the illegal transaction had been identified and would be disciplined.

"We have recovered the baby and all the suspects are in custody. We are still unravelling what truly happened because we suspect that it is a long chain of trafficking. The Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone 2, Adamu Ibrahim, has directed that the case be thoroughly investigated and the culprits prosecuted," she added.

Seriously? No Date Yet For Passage Of Nigeria's 2018 Budget

Posted: 14 Mar 2018 01:13 AM PDT

The Senate has said it is uncertain when the 2018 Appropriation Bill will be passed by the National Assembly.

The legislature and the executive have been passing the buck on which arm of government is responsible for the delayed passage of the budget, which President Muhammadu Buhari laid before a joint session of the National Assembly since November 7, 2017.

The Chairman, Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Senator Aliyu Sabi-Abdullahi, while briefing journalists in Abuja on Tuesday, stated that he could not ascertain when the budgetary process would end.

"The budget process is on and I cannot tell you 'this is the specific day it is going to end.' All I can tell you specifically is that we are working very hard on it and we want to assure Nigerians that, at the end of the day, we will have a budget that will serve the purpose of Nigerians," he said.

Sabi-Abdullahi also stated that he could not ascertain the level of response by the Federal Government's Ministries, Departments and Agencies whose heads were accused of failing to turn up for budget defence sessions being held by relevant legislative committees.

The Senate had on February 14, 2018 asked 63 agencies and parastatals under the Federal Government to submit details of their proposed 2018 budgets within one week or risk sanctions.

The upper chamber of the National Assembly had decried that while the President had complied with the law by laying the 2018 Appropriation Bill along with details of estimates before the lawmakers, the agencies of the government had disregarded the law.

Later on February 28, the Senate asked Nigerians to blame members of Buhari's cabinet and the MDAs under their portfolios for the delay in the passage of the budget.

The lawmakers alleged that ministers and heads of Federal Government's departments and agencies were frustrating legislative work on the budget proposals with their foreign trips and non-cooperation.

But the Director-General, Budget Office of the Federation, Mr. Ben Akabueze, denied the allegation, stating that the National Assembly already had enough details to work with and pass the Appropriation Bill.

More Killings: Herdsmen Kill 26, Burn Houses In Plateau State

Posted: 14 Mar 2018 12:58 AM PDT

The Peoples Democratic Party, National Council of Tiv Youths and Middle Belt Youth Council have said that President Muhammadu Buhari has not been effectively monitoring security problems in the country.

The groups stated this on Tuesday, when they commented on the President's remark in Benue State, that he was not aware that the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, did not obey his order.

Buhari had in January ordered the IGP to relocate to Benue State following the killings by herdsmen in the state.

On Monday, stakeholders, at a meeting in Makurdi, told the President that the police boss did not spend 24 hours in the state.

The PDP, in a statement on Tuesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, criticised the President for trying to pass the buck to the IGP.

The party stated that the development had exposed Buhari's lack of direct commitment to the security of Nigerians.

He said, "Nigerians have completely lost hope in President Muhammadu Buhari and his incompetent administration.

"By stating that he was unaware that the IGP only spent 24 hours in Benue State, Mr. President has confirmed that he has not been effectively monitoring the handling of the security situation of our nation.

"This places a huge question mark on the regular assurances issued from the Presidency on security. For our party, the PDP, the expression of President Buhari has once again vindicated our position that our nation has been placed on autopilot with a cabal pretending to be managing our affairs.

The party said Buhari had indicted himself, adding that such an unpardonable attitude to governance was directly responsible for the Buhari government's below average performance on the economy.

The main opposition party asked the President to tell Nigerians how he reprimanded Idris in the past.

It stated, "Indeed, Nigerians need to know; what exactly did President Buhari, as the Commander-in-Chief, do when he realised that the IGP did not carry out his orders? We demand a direct answer from the Presidency.

"The fact is that there is no sense of remorse by the government as the President himself spent only two hours in Benue State without visiting the victims or even making any direct policy statement on those behind the killings and how to forestall future bloodletting. Rather, in the character of this government, Mr. President engaged in yet another blame game instead of facing issues.

"If the Presidency is not committed to monitoring critical issues such as security, then Nigerians are no longer in doubt as to why other sectors, particularly our once robust economy, had gone comatose under the Buhari administration."

The party added that Nigerians were miffed that while the killings had yet to abate, the President announced his plans to return to Benue State to seek for another round of votes.

The action, he said, showed clinically that the President was truly not aware that Nigerians had since abandoned him in his state of unawareness.

On his part, the President of the National Council of Tiv Youths, Chief John Akperashi, said Buhari's statement was highly regrettable.

He stated, "If indeed he was sincere about that statement, it then goes to expose the President's colossal shortcomings and apparent security failure.

"It should indeed be worrisome and Nigerians should be concerned collectively that the security of their nation which should be paramount is brazenly undermined under this administration of President Buhari."

Also, the President of the Middle Belt Youth Council, Emma Zopmal, said the visit was to test Buhari's popularity.

He said, "Sensitive issues like this should not be taken with levity by Mr. President. In another case, it also means he does not really care about the whole dastardly situation that claimed lives and property of these innocent citizens.

"This levity on the side of Mr. President could be responsible for his absence at the mass burial of our people and without any representation."

This Senate Is Sabotaging Buhari’s Government - Senator Adamu

Posted: 14 Mar 2018 12:28 AM PDT

The senator representing Nasarawa West Senatorial District, Abdullahi Adamu, has accused the Bukola Saraki-led Senate of taking decisions that are frustrating the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari.

Adamu's position was contained in a statement on Tuesday.

He is one of the 10 lawmakers who stormed out of the Senate chamber when the Senate passed the Electoral Act Amendment Bill seeking to reshuffle elections, which those loyal to Buhari have opposed.

He said, "I believe we need to retrace our steps and reconsider our stand as legislators on matters of public interest. Our party, the APC, has the majority in both chambers of the National Assembly, yet we hold the executive prisoner of politics that are unhealthy for the polity. It is such a terrible irony that we sabotage our own government by refusing to do our part in support of the executive.

"Appointments requiring Senate approval are held up. The consequence is that the public has nicknamed the President and his administration 'go-slow.' The people gave us the mandate as a party to deliver. With our control of the executive and the National Assembly, there is no reason why the government cannot acquit itself and fulfil the yearnings of the people.

"Perhaps, while we are consumed with sabotaging the administration and stabbing one another in the back, we forget that in less than a year from now, we shall be required to seek the people's re-validation of our mandate to sit in these hallowed chambers. What shall we tell them?"

The lawmaker stated that part of his "crime" was his stand on the amendment to the Electoral Act.

"Me and some of my colleagues were opposed to this amendment on the grounds that it is not the duty of the Senate to determine the order of elections. It had never been part of the Electoral Act and there is no need to deny the commission the right to do its duty as it deems fit. Happily, I am not alone in taking this stand. Some of my colleagues are opposed to it too," he said.

Buhari Summons IGP Over Breach Of His Order

Posted: 14 Mar 2018 12:28 AM PDT

President Mohammodu Buhari on Tuesday summoned the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, to answer query as to why he breached a Presidential order to relocate to Benue following reported killings in the state.

It would be recalled that President Buhari had on Jan. 9 directed the Inspector-General to move to Benue with a view to check the reported cases of attacks on innocent citizens in the state.

However, President Buhari who was on official visit to Benue on Monday in continuation of his tour of troubled areas in the country was told by Gov. Samuel Ortom of Benue that the Inspector-General refused to obey his directive, alleging that Idris only spent 24 hours in Benue, and later moved to neigbouring Nasarawa state.

NAN reliably gathered that the Inspector-General was in the Presidential villa apparently to explain his flouting of the President's order to remain in Benue at the height of the incidence between farmers and herdsmen.

President Buhari who is believed to have summoned the IG, received him in a private audience.

The IG left about 30 minutes after without speaking to anyone.

"It is believed that the president demanded for a full report on police operations till date after which he will make further decisions.

"There is a renewed resolve to make sure that the killings and bad security situation in Benue State abates,'' the source said.

When contacted, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu confirmed the meeting but refused to disclose details.

You're Seeking Re-election While Nothing Is Working - APC Senator slams Buhari's Presidency

Posted: 13 Mar 2018 12:53 PM PDT

As the 2019 general election is approaching, an All Progressive Congress (APC) senator has berated the presidency for not being proactive towards burning national issues.

While speaking during a committee meeting at the National Assembly, the outspoken senator representing Bauchi Central, Isah Misau, lambasted President Buhari for reportedly seeking re-election in 2019.

The lawmaker berated the nation's leader for not being proactive towards burning national issues, and lamented that it took constant reminder by the Nigerian media and criticisms of the APC government before Presdient Buhari decided to visit states where killings have been recorded.

He said: "It is painful. We don't have hospitals, we don't have schools; nothing is working in the country and all of us are saying 2019.

"What is 2019? Are we sure we are going to reach 2019? It's so bad. Things are happening. Leaders, you have to beg them before they go and see what is happening in places.

"Media have to make a lot of noise before leaders go there. What kind of a country is this? Today as a Senator, you get frustrated, talk less of somebody that have no job."

Soon, Nigerians May Start Writing JAMB From Their Homes

Posted: 13 Mar 2018 06:18 AM PDT

The Joint Admission and Matriculation Examination Board (JAMB) has hinted of plans to have the tertiary institutions entry examination written by candidates from their places of residence across the country.

The board spokesman, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, made this disclosure while featuring on a radio current affairs program, Day Break Show, yesterday in Abeokuta.

"We are thinking of open book examinations or allowing them write the examination from their houses. Once we get the required technology, we can do it," he declared.

On challenges facing the board, particularly in the ongoing UTME, the JAMB spokesman said, "At any point if there is an issue, we find a way to solve it to ensure all candidates write the UTME with convenience."

He said the results of the exam would be delayed as there was need to preview them before they were eventually released.

"Once a candidate clicks submit, the result is ready but we wait to preview the results before releasing so we don't cancel results later. You can detect malpractice even after exams."

An ICT expert, Damilola Oyeshola, who commented on the idea of tertiary institutions entry examination being taken by candidates from their homes, said the challenge of IT infrastructure in the country would make the idea difficult to implement.

"One of the challenges we have with the UTME computer-based test is how to use computers by the candidates," Oyeshola said, stressing that there was need for more technology integration particularly in the hinterland for the board to succeed in conducting the UTME for candidates in their respective homes.
