South African Bank To Take Over Nigerian Banking Sector?

Posted: 12 Mar 2018 04:03 AM PDT

After dominating Nigeria's telecom and pay-TV sectors, South African leading lender, the Barclays Africa Group, has announced plans to make a grand entry into Nigeria's banking industry.

Financial Watch gathered that the Barclays Africa Group which signified its intention to look towards Nigeria as a new market in order to dominate the African banking market may be reeling out strategies to acquire one of Nigeria's Tier2 banks.

The planned entry which was made public last week by Barclays Africa group has been described by industry watchers as a welcome development.

During a presentation in South Africa, Maria Ramos, the chief executive of Barclays Africa, said the lender aims to enter Nigeria as a new market, as it seeks to raise its share of the African banking market to 12 per cent from 6 per cent over the medium term.

The south African bank currently seating on number two spot by market value reported a 4 per cent rise in annual profit, thanks to a substantial decline in impairments, normalised diluted headline EPS, the primary measure of profit in South Africa that strips out one-off items, came in at 1,837.7 cents in the year ended December, compared with 1,769.4 a year earlier.

Barclays Africa Group Limited is 14.9 percent owned by Barclays Bank PLC and is listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange with current operations in Botswana, Ghana, Kenya, Mauritius, Mozambique, Seychelles, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia.

A top banker in one of the Tier 2 banks in the country said the Barclays Africa Group have been speaking with some banks in the country with the view of acquiring one with a strong corporate governance structure.

The source, who declined to name the banks, said naming the banks speaking with Barclays Group may interfere with the discussions that are ongoing.

"Barclays have been speaking with some banks for more than a year now and there are indications that the group will come up with their choice very soon. One thing that is certain here is that good corporate governance structure will be criteria for the acquisition" our source said.

Anor Anyanwu, former Executive Director of Mainstreet Bank, said the planned fresh entry of Barclays Group in to the country will serve as re-entrance for the group as Barclays had recorded giant strides the last time it was here.

"The Union Bank we have today was formerly Barclays Bank. If the group is planning a fresh entry into the country, I will say it is a welcome development. It also a pointer to the fact that companies outside the country are beginning to see Nigeria as a good place to do business", Anyanwu stated.

Cyril Ampka, an Abuja-based economist, said the move will once again move Nigeria up on the list of countries with ease of doing business.

His words: "We have been clamouring for investors to come into the country and this is one of such responses. Coming into Nigeria by Barclays Africa is an indication that Nigeria is ready for international business and I am sure that the CBN will welcome them into the country after meeting the requirement set by the apex bank".

Woman Tortures Her Little Maid With Hot Iron In Lagos (Photos)

Posted: 12 Mar 2018 03:03 AM PDT

A Lagos-based trader identified as Mrs. Nkeiruka Ngwu, who allegedly tortured her 10-year-old maid, Chioma Samuel, with a hot iron on Wednesday at Ngwu's house on Ogundana Street, Allen Avenue, Ikeja, has been arrested by officials of the Lagos State Police Command.

The woman had returned home from work and was informed by some neighbours that her children cried endlessly while she was away.

The news angered the mother of four who then plugged an iron which she allegedly pressed on the victim's legs and arms. She also allegedly poured hot water on the little girl.

The Punch gathered that Ngwu, while accompanied by Samuel, had reportedly taken her children to school the next day when some parents challenged her over the victim's injuries. They advised her to take Samuel to a hospital for treatment.

When their advice was ignored, the women reported the case to the police.

A source said Ngwu, who hailed from the same hometown as the victim in Ngwu, Abia State, took her from her family in January 2018.

He said, "The girl lost her father late last year and she promised to take care of her and enrol her in a school. But since the girl arrived in Lagos, it has been one abuse after the other.

"On Wednesday, she (Ngwu) had returned from work when some of her neighbours told her her children cried for a long time and that the girl probably beat them up. She became angry and burnt the girl with a hot iron in the hands and legs. She also scalded her body with hot water which she poured on her."

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Chike Oti, who confirmed the incident in a statement on Sunday, said Ngwu tortured the victim "mentally and physically", and noted that the suspect never kept the promise she made to Samuel's family to take care of her.

He explained that the torture was discovered when Ngwu took her children to school a day after the alleged torture.

"On Thursday, March 8, 2018, her cup of iniquity got filled when she took her children to a private school in Ikeja. Unfortunately for her, the prying eyes of other mothers, who came to the school to drop off their kids, noticed the gaping wounds on the upper and lower limbs of the victim, who accompanied the suspect to the school.

"After questioning the girl, they waited for her madam, who had gone to drop her kids in their various classrooms. When she finished and was about to drive off, she was confronted by those women, who nearly mobbed her.

"They were calmed by some teachers, who heard their voices. The women told the suspect to take the girl to a hospital or else they would petition the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, Edgal Imohimi.

"In spite of their warning to report to the authorities, Mrs. Nkeiruka Ngwu, like the proverbial dog that wouldn't hearken to its master's call when danger is lurking, stubbornly went to the school on Friday, March 9, 2018, accompanied by the child whose wounds were manifestly untreated," the PPRO added.

Oti said the parents made good their threat and reported to the CP, who ordered the arrest of the suspect, adding that while the case was referred to the gender section of the command, Samuel was taken to a police hospital for treatment.

The police spokesperson said Imohimi also instructed that Samuel be taken care of until she was handed over to the social welfare team of the Lagos State Government.

"Investigation is in progress. The suspect will have her day in court on Monday (today), March 12, 2018," he said.

Kogi State governor, Yahaya Bello, on Sunday sacked all the members of his cabinet, only to subsequently make a turnround.

The governor had directed all the commissioners and local government administrators to hand over necessary documents and government properties to Folasade Ayoade, secretary to the state government.

Petra Onyegbule, chief press secretary to the governor, had said the governor announced the sack during the state executive council meeting held in Lokoja, the state capital, on Sunday.

While the dust raised by the development was yet to settle, Bello recalled the officials, due to internal pressure.

Sources say the governor is accusing some of his Commissioners and others of leaking information about things happening inside his government to Senator Dino Melaye.

N13.5m Allowance For Senators:: Falana, Others Slam Senate

Posted: 12 Mar 2018 01:08 AM PDT

Prominent Nigerians and groups on Sunday took a swipe at the National Assembly over the N13.5m running cost being paid to senators.

The Campaign for Democracy (CD), senior lawyers, including Mr. Femi Falana, Mr. Yusuf Ali and Prof. Itse Sagay, in separate interviews with The Punch also commended Senator Shehu Sani for the disclosure.

Sani had, in an interview with TheNews, revealed that each senator received N13.5m monthly as running cost apart from the N700,000 consolidated salary and allowances paid to each of them.

Sagay said Sani's revelation had vindicated him on his criticism of the lawmakers.

Sagay said. "I've always said they earn too much. This figure by Sani does not include constituency allowances, which is in billions of naira.

"We still have budget padding from which millions are made by them. By the time you put all that together, you can see that these people are collecting a huge chunk of the Nigerian budget."

The CD, in its reaction, said the N13.5m running cost per senator could employ hundreds of graduates in the country.

The CD President, Usman Abdul, in an interview with The Punch, said the huge earnings by the senators contributed to the bastardisation of the economy.

He said, "You can take good care of over 100 graduates from a senator's salary. The legislature should deliberate on the abject poverty and unemployment in the country."

Also speaking, Lagos-based lawyer, Mr. Jiti Ogunye, said Sani must be commended for his courage.

Ogunye said, "What Senator Shehu Sani said has confirmed the long-held fears of Nigerians that Nigerian legislators, both at the state and national levels, have been short-changing Nigerians.

"They are not expected to use that elevated position to serve their own interest at the expense of public interest. They are not expected to allow their self-consideration to override their commitment to abiding by the law."

The Vice-President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Mr. Monday Ubani, said Nigerians must demand a review of the lawmakers' earnings.

Ubani said, "It means that Nigerians have not been getting a fair deal from our legislators. If a single person will be earning that kind of money in a country where the minimum wage is N18,000; something has to be done. We need to insist on a review of these jumbo allowances."

The Executive Chairman, Centre for Anti-Corruption and Open Leadership, Mr. Debo Adeniran, said Nigerians had a right to be displeased because they had not been getting a fair deal from the lawmakers.

Adeniran said, "The outcry wouldn't have been if the legislators have been living up to the expectation of their constituents. Nigerians don't see the lawmakers as people who are representing their interest."

Falana said Sani's revelation had proved that Nigerian legislators were the highest paid in the world.

Falana, in a statement on Sunday, said, "Apart from the monthly package of N13.5m, each senator is given the opportunity to execute constituency projects to the tune of N200m per annum. However, the disclosure made by Senator Sani does not cover the allowances for cars, housing, wardrobe and furniture running to several millions of naira approved for each senator."

Also a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Yusuf Ali, said the allowance was insensitive given the state of the economy and the minimum wage of the workers in the country.

He said, "Even if there were no mass unemployment and if the economy were buoyant, such allowance is totally unrelated to our circumstances; it is very insensitive."

The Head of Abuja office of Social Action, a non-governmental organisation, Mrs. Vivian Bellonwu-Okafor, said the revelation was another sad commentary in the history of political offices emolument in Nigeria.

A former Managing Director of Unity Bank Plc, Mr Rislanudeen Mohammed, said there was no justification for the N13.5m monthly pay.

Police Arrest Yahoo Boys Operating With Charms

Posted: 12 Mar 2018 01:03 AM PDT

Men of the Nigeria Police Force, Cross River State Command on Friday arrested three Internet fraudsters, also known as yahoo-boys, with charms which they used in defrauding and dispossessing their victims of their valuables and money.

This was just as another group of five yahoo-boys were also arrested on the streets of Calabar.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr. Hafiz Inuwa, who disclosed this in Calabar during the parade of the suspects, gave the names of the yahoo boys that were arrested with charms as;
22-year-old Chukwuemeka Ahunanya, Francis Ugochukwu, 25, and Emmanuel Chukwuma, 25.

The CP said the three-man gang had confessed to belonging to a syndicate that was using charms to hypnotise potential victims.

Inuwa said, "On February 23, 2018, at about 0940hours, the following suspects were arrested in the Akpabuyo Local Government Area on a tip-off. They are Chukwuemeka Ahunanya, Francis Ugochukwu, and Emmanuel Chukwuma.

"During interrogation, the suspects confessed to belonging to an Internet fraud group also known as yahoo boys. They used charms to defraud and dispossess unsuspecting members of the public of their hard-earned money and other valuables. Some charms were recovered from them during the search."

He said that investigation was ongoing to identify their victims, adding that the suspects would soon be charged to court.

Similarly, Inuwa disclosed that the command also on March 8, 2018 arrested another set of Internet fraudsters.

"We got a tip-off that five young men who specialise in Internet fraud were sighted along Itu Street, off Mary Slessor Avenue, in Calabar, ostensibly to commit a crime.

"The following five suspects were arrested by men of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad: Emmanuel Anthony, 33; Victor Eyo, 23; Joshua Archibong, 22; Michael Oyo, 23; and Edet Emmanuel, 20," he said.

Inuwa disclosed that items recovered from the suspects were a pair of scissors, bottles of CSP Codeine, some mobile phones, ATM cards, play station and ML 350 Mercedes Benz SUV.

When interrogated by Southern City News, one of the suspects who specialised in using charms, Ahunanya, said the gang introduced the use of charms to defraud their victims two weeks ago.

Female Banker Commits Suicide Over Allegedly Husband Infidelity

Posted: 12 Mar 2018 12:28 AM PDT

Infidelity is something that destroys lives and destinies, but because people can't see the consequences of the mess they are getting themselves involved in, they carry on with the nonsense until it's too late. Sigh!

There was pandemonium at Iwhrekpokpor, Ughelli, Delta State, after a 32-year-old banker and mother of two, identified only as Peace, committed suicide over her husband's alleged infidelity.

Community sources said the deceased, who worked with one of the new generation banks along Market Road, Ughelli, took an insecticide at her residence on Wednesday.

It was learnt that the couple had separated before their families reconciled them recently.

Despite the reconciliation, her husband continued to stay away from home. He was away when she allegedly committed suicide.

A close friend of the deceased, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told The Punch that, "Her lifeless body was discovered in her apartment on Wednesday. She had been having issues with her husband. She took some drugs and an empty container of an insecticide, Sniper, was found near her corpse."

Although efforts to get confirmation from the state Public Relations Officer, Mr. Andrew Aniamaka, proved abortive, a police source in the area confirmed the incident.

He said "She returned home from work and took some mixtures. We are still investigating the matter."

Senate Reacts To Shehu Sani's N13.5m Allowance Revelation

Posted: 12 Mar 2018 12:28 AM PDT

The Senate yesterday confirmed that each senator collects N13.5m monthly as running cost in addition to N750,000 monthly salary/allowances.

The lid on the pay by the federal lawmakers was opened last week by Senator Shehu Sani (APC Kaduna Central) in an interview published by The News.

In his reaction, Senate Spokesman Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi said,
the figure given by Sani are contained in various line items and expenditure heads of the budget of the National Assembly which had been made public.

"Almost all holders of elective and appointive offices have running costs allocated to their offices and that cannot be said to be part of their salaries", Abdullahi said, adding that senators' emoluments were never secret.

He denied that senators had been up in arms against Sani for the disclosure.

The breakdown of the National Assembly's annual budgets is not made public in spite of Nigerian's demand for transparency.

In the 2017 budget, the National Assembly got N125billion vote, but millions of Nigerians don't know how the billions would be spent.

Six Die In Multiple Accidents Caused By Drunk Driving In Lagos

Posted: 12 Mar 2018 12:04 AM PDT

Six persons, including a woman, a Danfo driver and his conductor, were killed in two road crashes in Lagos at the weekend.

Five of them were killed yesterday when a driver believed to be drunk rammed into an 18-seater commercial bus at the first Lekki Toll Gate. Fourteen were injured.

The sixth victim was killed at Apongbon, Lagos Island, when he alighted from his car to help an accident victim.

The Nation gathered that the driver, who was in a Lexus GX470 Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) belonging to Triple D Global Resources Limited, was returning from a night club. He was said to be driving against traffic.

According to witnesses, the Lexus and the bus tumbled, killing two persons on the spot. Sixteen, including the bus conductor, sustained serious injuries. Three of them, including the conductor died in the hospital, where they were rushed to.

The Lexus driver is said to be unconscious.

The legs of the bus driver whose name was given as Sarafa aka Baba Ikimo were shattered and parts of his flesh still littered the scene hours after the accident.

There were bloodstains at toll gate lane where the accident occurred. The lane has since been cordoned off. But an official at the toll gate said it would be reopened on Monday (today).

A witnesses said the Lexus driver hit some vehicles, including a police van, at the Nigerian Law School bus stop, and was speeding away to escape.

Some hard drugs, a pair of scissors and empty bottles of alcoholic driks were said to have been found during a search of his vehicle.

A bus conductor at CMS bus stop, who refused to be named, said the late bus driver, who was fondly called Iso, was married and had kids. His body has been taken to his village in Oyo State for burial.

The conductor said the bus was coming from Lakowe in Eti-Osa East Local Council Development Area of the state to CMS.

"If the road was not free or if it was much later in the day that the accident happened, the damage would not have been this much. I learnt a lot of people died and others that did not die sustained serious injuries. Some broke their hands, legs and other body parts. I wonder what came over the jeep driver to moved against traffic," he said.

An official at the toll gate, who also refused to be named, said the driver was obviously drunk.

"I was not here when the accident happened but from the information I got from my colleagues, the driver of the jeep was drunk. They saw empty bottles of alcoholic drinks inside his car. The road is big enough for all cars to move freely and conveniently, it is only a drunk man that would have left his lane to another lane as wide as this road is," he said.

Another bus conductor who simply identified himself as Baba Shola, described the accident as unfortunate.

The Apongbon happened on Saturday night when the motorist went to the aid of another motorist, who collided with a trailer.

The injured motorist was said to have been trapped in his Honda vehicle marked APP304DV and the other motorist parked his BMWX5 (KSF339BK) to assist him.

A commercial bus marked BDG68XH also stopped to help the victim.

While helping the driver off his car, an oncoming vehicle ran them over and sped away.

The BMW X5 driver died on the spot; the trapped victim and the bus driver were injured.

LASEMA General Manager Adesina Tiamiyu, said "We are not happy when there are avoidable losses of lives. The Lekki accident could have been avoided if the driver had stayed back at the place he went to...

"We have said it many times that people should not drive when they drink. I can assure you that these accidents would be thoroughly investigated and appropriate actions taken."

4 Things Couples Should Do If Their Marriage Is In Trouble

Posted: 11 Mar 2018 08:00 AM PDT

I am worried at the reality that so many marriages are falling apart… right under our noses. If we can't talk about the hard things, we'll never be able to overcome them.

If you find yourself struggling within a difficult marriage today, it's time to move toward healing by taking the following important steps:

1. Pray
No matter who you marry, there's a good chance that you will one day wonder if you made the right choice. If you've hit that point - you need to pray like crazy. If you haven't hit that point - you, too, need to pray like crazy.

If I only knew back then what I know now, I would have been praying for my marriage since I was a small child. We need to cover every ounce of our marriage and every inch of our spouses in prayer. Every day. All the time. Because we are not fighting against flesh and blood! We never were. We're fighting against the unseen darkness, that wants to destroy our marriages the second our guards are down. But through Christ, we can overcome. Through Christ, we have the strength and courage we need to not only fight the battle - but to WIN the battle. Clothe yourself with your spiritual armor, and pray your heart out for your marriage and your family every single day.

We serve a God who is able to do immeasurably more than we could ever ask or imagine… and I found myself today crying out to my God for the sake of the broken marriages in my church and community, in my country and world.

2. Share
Far too many people are dealing with really hard things, but they're dealing with them completely alone. Due to the stigma that often comes with "marriage problems" within the church, we don't often want to share about the struggle until it's too late - until the harmful roots have dug so deep that they've caused devastation in our marriages. It's time for us to break this deadly stigma, and begin to speak up!

I challenge you to find someone who cares, and share with them your struggle. Find someone you trust, and invite them into your marriage journey. Then, get enrolled in professional Christian counseling TODAY. Right now. Today. Make the call. Find someone who specializes in marriage issues and start the journey. It's worth every hour and worth every penny. Begin the journey of healing. Even if you have so start the journey standing alone. It's not an instant-fix. It's a life journey. But it can only begin if you're willing to bring the problems to the surface… because it is only when things are brought to the light that they can be healed.

3. Learn
Marriage is a lifelong process of learning, changing, growing, and adapting. We are all a work in progress, and because of that, so is our marriage. I owe the health of my marriage to two things: God's unrelenting grace and mercy first and foremost, and secondly, the authors, mentors, teachers, and speakers who have spoken wisdom into my life every step of the way. We are so ill-prepared for marriage in the Church.

Marriage is THE ONLY thing in life in which you get a license to do, before you've actually learned how to do it. You HAVE TO LEARN ALONG THE WAY if you want to have any chance of succeeding at this thing called marriage. I find that very concerning.

For this very reason, I felt led to tackle some of the harder, yet hopeful, conversations about marriage.

4. Where is Your Marriage Today?
I pray that God would give you a renewed sense of hope to take the necessary steps, and that you would allow yourself to believe that God is able to restore and redeem you and your marriage, from the inside-out.

If you find yourself in a thriving marriage, I pray that God would give you a renewed sense of urgency to protect it with everything you've got.

Angry Senators Plot Against Shehu Sani For Exposing Their Monthly Allowance of N13.5Million

Posted: 11 Mar 2018 08:00 AM PDT

Senator Shehu Sani has angered a number of his colleagues for lifting the veil on the N13.5million illegal allowances members of the upper legislative chambers receive each month in addition to their legitimate salaries and allowances.

Some lawmakers who spoke to PT but asked not to be named said the revelation by Senator Sani has damaged the reputation of the federal legislature while possibly pitting constituents against their representatives.

The aggrieved senators and members of the House of Reps said some of their colleagues were already discreetly working out modalities to deal with Senator Sani.

The senator had in an interview with TheNews revealed that he and his colleagues receive N13.5 million monthly as "running cost", aside a N700,000 monthly consolidated salary and allowances which they also receive.

Sani's revelation is the first by a lawmaker from the Senate since the clamour by Nigerians for a full disclosure of lawmakers' earnings.

The revelation has sparked widespread anger among Nigerians who had always criticised the lawmakers for arbitrarily allocating jumbo pay to themselves at a time the country remained in dire need of funds for developmental projects.

Ironically, Sani's colleagues are criticising him for coming clean on the secret allowances lawmakers receive while majority of Nigerians wallow in poverty.

To punish him, some Senators plan to prevail on Bukola Saraki to stop inviting him for "their" secret meetings, especially those where money matter might be discussed.

SDP Is The New 'Third Force' Ahead 2019?

Posted: 11 Mar 2018 07:30 AM PDT

*Repositions to reap from perceived discontentment in the country over failures of the ruling APC and opposition PDP Ahead of the 2019 general elections, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has taken the centre stage in the political arena.

It has literarily become the toast of the moment among politicians who are not comfortable with the existing political order.

Already, the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) and Peoples Salvation Party (PSP) have teamed up with the party to form a formidable platform. Also, some members of the PDP who are said to be disgruntled over the outcome of the last national convention of the party, led by former ministers of Information and Education, Prof. Jerry Gana and Prof. Tunde Adeniran, respectively, have also joined the party.

It is also being insinuated that the Coalition for Nigeria Movement (CNM), which is the brainchild of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, is also in talks with the party. Former National Publicity Secretary of the party, Alfa Mohammed, had also recently claimed that five serving governors, 20 senators and some members of the House of Reps were set to join the party.

Mohammed, who spoke with journalists in Minna, Niger State, last Sunday, had said: "In the next two to three weeks, the mass movement into the SDP will become more pronounced especially at the national and state Houses of Assembly and I am sure that the party will soon become the majority at the National Assembly."

According to The Sun, whether Mohammed's assertion amounts to mere political talk or not remains to be seen, but the unfolding scenario in the political scene amply suggests that the SDP is being primed to act as the 'Third Force' in the 2019 elections.

Recall that Obasanjo had in his open letter to President Muhammadu Buhari on January 24, 2018, declared that the two prominent parties in the country, the ruling APC and opposition PDP, had failed Nigerians. He had mooted the idea of forming a movement, now christened a 'Third Force' in the political circle, "that will drive Nigeria up and forward."

"We need a Coalition for Nigeria (CN). Such a movement at this juncture needs not be a political party but one to which all well-meaning Nigerians can belong. That movement must be a coalition for democracy, good governance, social and economic well-being and progress. Coalition to salvage and redeem our country. You can count me with such a movement. Last time, we asked, prayed and worked for change and God granted our request. This time, we must ask, pray and work for change with unity, security and progress. And God will again grant us. Of course, nothing should stop such a movement from satisfying conditions for fielding candidates for elections," Obasanjo had said in the letter.

Nevertheless, with the emerging re-positioning of the SDP, the question that is bothering many Nigerians is whether the party has what it takes to dislodge both the APC and the PDP from their vantage positions in the political arena in 2019 given that it did not make serious impact in previous elections both at the national and state levels. Moreover, there are concerns about the capability of those behind the party to mobilise Nigerians against the two major political parties in the country their votes in the coming elections. Do they have the support base and the financial muscle to prosecute an election that would hold in less than a year?

The Interim National Working Committee (NWC) of the party, which it announced last Friday in Abuja, comprises the National Chairman, Olu Falae; Deputy National Chairman, Abdul Ahmed Isiaq; National Secretary, Shehu Musa Gabam; National Vice Chairman, Ebenezer Ikeyina; National Vice Chairman, Junaid Muhammed; National Vice Chairman; Supo Sonibare; and National Vice Chairman, E.B Henshaw.

Others were National Legal Adviser, Joseph Abu; National Treasurer, Nnamdi Clarkson; National Organizing Secretary, Emeka Atuma; National Spokesperson, Adakole Ijogi; National Financial Secretary, Kehinde Ayoola; Women Leader, Maryam Batubo; and Youth Leader, Stanley Nwaka.

Meanwhile, should the CNM choose to fuse into SDP as being speculated, it might also boast of the likes of former governors Olagunsoye Oyinlola and Donald Duke of Osun and Cross River states, respectively; former national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr Ahmadu Ali; Otunba Oyewole Fasawe; former Military Administrator of old Ondo State, Gen. Ekundayo Opaleye; former minister of state for defence, Mrs. Dupe Adelaja; former national secretary of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), Buba Galadima; national chairman of African Democratic Congress (ADC), Ralph Nwosu; a former deputy governor in Oyo State, Taofeek Arapaja; and a two-time governorship candidate in Ogun State, Prince Gboyega Isiaka, among others, who had already aligned with the group.

One of the leaders that have been actively involved in the deliberations and negotiations towards re-positioning the SDP told The Sun on the condition of anonymity that the party has truly secured the support of some serving and former governors as well as some serving and former National Assembly (NASS) members.

"The meeting of the SDP held at Sheraton Abuja a week ago had Dr Junaid Mohammed of the PSP, who was a staunch supporter of the efforts leading to the emergence of Buhari as president, together with 10 former governors, representatives of eight serving governors from across five of the six geo-political zones and two serving senators, who were only brief in attendance.

"The entire Middle Belt zone has adopted SDP as the alternative platform. This stretches to 12 of the 19 states in the North. The Southern, Middle Belt and Arewa Vanguard Forum are considering an invitation to be part of the political party with the zonal structures being offered to each of the zonal organisations within the leaders forum. The Forum is comprised of the leadership of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Afenifere, Pan-Niger Delta Forum, Middle Belt Forum and Arewa Vanguard. The group has been meeting for the past one year with the resolve of working together to put up a platform that would be able to restructure the polity with fiscal federalism and structural devolution of power as its minimum criteria in the emerging polity," the source said.

The source further revealed that "it is suggested that Obasanjo, former military president, Ibrahim Babangida; and former minister of defence, Gen. Theophilus Danjuma, are all supporting this initiative on the condition that even if older and experienced politicians jump-start the arrangements, they need to yield to new and younger leaders with fresh ideas to lead the initiative."

The current National Vice Chairman of the party, Mohammed, believes that with the ongoing re-organisation, the SDP would seriously challenge the status quo in 2019.

"I am an optimist; I believe SDP will make a great impact. The main reason I want to be associated with it is because it is ideologically driven. Even if it was not ideologically driven before, it has to be ideologically driven.

"It is not compulsory to have governors or members of the National Assembly in a party to succeed. There are about 65 to 67 parties or thereabout in the country. In terms of electoral performance, most of the parties are not on ground. The two parties, which have led the country, are not doing well. They have impacted negatively on the economy and our political life," he noted recently.

A public affairs analyst, Mr. Jide Ojo, however, told The Sun Sun that it would be too early to determine whether the SDP would emerge as a 'Third Force' in 2019 or not.

"I think that if five governors and about 20 senators are on their way to the SDP as they claimed, that will boost the fortunes of the party. But whether they will be able to clinch the presidency is another issue entirely. Why I'm saying this is because it remains to be seen how potent that 'Third Force' will be. Right now, we know for sure that Prof. Adeniran has joined the party. There are other personalities in the country whose names are being mentioned in connection with the party. But one would have to tarry a little; may be by the middle of this year if they are able to poach very powerful bigwigs from the ranks of APC and the PDP, then it may be the 'Third Force'. But for presidency, which is actually the ultimate, it will also depend on who they will field as their presidential candidate," Ojo said.

He explained further: "You know that from 2003 when the incumbent president joined the presidential contest, he had always won overwhelmingly in the North. So, if he is running in 2019, unless there is a counter force that is very potent that can erode that northern base, it might just be an effort in futility. But that is not to say that the SDP cannot be a force to reckon with in terms of winning seats at other levels. But I still have my doubts; it may end up like the overrated CPC of 2011. When Buhari set up the CPC, a lot of people thought that the party would win many seats in the NASS and clinch the presidency because of his popularity. But what happened? They were only able to win one governorship seat – Nasarawa and very few seats in the NASS."

Asked whether he felt that the period left before the next election was too short for the SDP to re-organise and truly upstage both the APC and the PDP at the poll, Ojo noted that building a political party requires a lot of hard work.

"I wish this so called 'Third Force' had emerged in 2016 or even early 2017. That would have given them sufficient time to build the party into a formidable force. Building a party is not a walk in the park. You need to have structures across the length and breadth of the country, particularly if you are aiming to win the presidency. The structures serve as the foot soldiers of the party. They are the ones that will campaign for the party; they are the ones that will nominate the agents that will be the eyes and ears of the party at the polling units.

"Recall that the SDP has been in existence for a while. I'm very sure that it participated in the 2015 general elections. But what impact did it make in the elections? What impact did it make even in Ondo State where Falae comes from? Now, building that party into a formidable election-winning party takes more than few months. So, what I'm saying is that unless they are able to attract bigwigs that can deploy both human and material resources to institute very potent structures from ward to the national level, they may not make much impact in 2019," he said.

Ojo, however, stated that the SDP might benefit from the internal crisis in the APC and the arrogance of the PDP. He noted: "The APC having realised that they have a lot of internal issues have set up the Bola Tinubu-led reconciliation committee. If they make a mess of that reconciliation effort, then the SDP may reap bountifully from that and may realise their ambition as a 'Third Force'. Also, the Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose, recently described Prof. Adeniran as an Abuja politician, who does not have a base in his state. If the PDP members continue with their attitude of describing anyone that leaves their fold as a spent force that is not needed in the party, the SPD may also reap bountifully from that. But even at that, the SDP will need to launch a recruitment movement to actually get Nigerians, young and old, to join them and then build them into the 'Third Force'."

What is clear from the foregoing is that the road to 2019 would be riddled with thorns and pins for the SDP in its quest to alter the status quo. But even at that, the dominant parties in the sphere must hold the warning, "never underrate your opponent".

Atiku Demands To Know Why 150,000 Policemen Guard VIPs

Posted: 11 Mar 2018 06:30 AM PDT

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has asked President Muhammadu Buhari to explain why 150,000 policemen should be attached to VIPs in the country and not schools following the abduction of 110 schoolgirls from Dapchi in Yobe State.
"If I had my way, I would have recalled all of those 150,000 policemen who are not performing core police duties and send them to provide security for every school in the North-East region. That to me would be a better use of their time and services."

He said this in an interview with ThisDay.

"We already know that Boko Haram has an agenda to cripple Western education in Nigeria. So, how could we have left those schools unguarded? Why should the police be guarding VIPs who can afford personal guards and leave vulnerable girls unguarded?

"We are spending billions trying to encourage girls to go to school only to allow them be abducted by terrorists. I condemn these abductions and I urge the federal government to take firm action to ensure that it would never reoccur in Nigeria." Atiku said.

The former vice president accused the Buhari-led administraton of not doing enough to protect the schoolgirls who were kidnapped from their hostel on February 19.

Atiku lambasted the administration for not using the 150,000 policemen attached to VIPs to protect vulnerable schoolchildren in the North-East.

"Let me paraphrase Oscar Wilde and say that to lose one set of girls to Boko Haram may be regarded as a misfortune; to lose another set, looks like carelessness. As an opposition party, the APC was vocal to the point of exploiting the issue of the Chibok girls' kidnapping. They did not cut the Jonathan administration any slack.

"They criticised that government every step of the way and some may even claim that they undermined the then government's efforts at resolving that unfortunate incident. So, it is rather surprising that a set of people who were so unsparing in their critique of the previous government would be in a situation whereby they have allowed these same terrorists to kidnap 110 girls," he said.

The Chairman of the Police Service Commission, Chief Mike Okiro, recently revealed that 150,000 policemen were guarding 'big men' in the country.
