Boko Haram Top Man who led squad to kidnap Chibok Girls surrenders (Photo)

Posted: 28 Aug 2017 04:16 AM PDT

Auwal Ismaeela, a top Boko Haram commander, has surrendered and confessed to leading the squads that abducted the over 200 Chibok school girls in 2014.

Ismaeela said he was tired of the "senseless" atrocities of the insurgent group, hence his decision to surrender to the Nigerian authorities.

According to PRNigeria, the Boko Haram commander expressed regrets over his actions and said he was cooperating with the Nigerian military with information on locations and hideouts of other top commanders.

He said he was "brainwashed and misled" to abduct and kill people, but he could no longer stand the atrocities "contrary to the teachings of Islam" which were being carried out by the insurgents.

"My self and Abu Hafsat a Boko Haram commander led other squads to abduct the Chibok girls. We led the operations to invade Gwoza, Bama, Limankara mobile barrack, Bita, Bosso, Madagali, Chibok, Pulka, Firgi, and Mubi.

"In Madagali which was my home town, myself, Adam Vitiri, Abu Adam and Habu Kudama, some high ranking Boko Haram Commander led an operation in 2014 where we killed some students and youths at the Central Secondary School in Sabon Garin Madagali.

"In one of the operations, I abducted my wife named Maryam who had two kids for me in Sambisa Forest.

"It is unfortunate that I was brainwashed and misled not only on some abductions but in the killings of my own people that were innocent. I wholeheartedly regret my actions.

"During a battle in Konduga where myself and other Boko Haram commanders led the operations, I lost my right leg and was almost got burnt. Even at that, I did not stop fighting for the course. Sheikh Shekau ordered that I should be given a tricycle which I continued to use for various operations before I eventually surrendered.

"I willingly surrendered to the military because I was tired of the senseless killing and fight. I realised that our people have resort to stealing and all sort of atrocity contrary to the teaching and practice of Islam.

"Women were being raped, sometimes publicly. Children died from malnutrition and disease as the living condition became harsher. As there was no food in the camp, people died every day because of hunger.

"I will continue to cooperate with the security agencies in providing useful information on our mode of operations and to disclose top-secret hideouts of our commanders," he said.

JAMB Reacts To Low Minimum Cut-Off Marks Controversy

Posted: 28 Aug 2017 03:46 AM PDT

Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has defended the pegging of 120 as minimum cut-off marks for students seeking admission into Nigerian universities.

The decision, reached at a stakeholders' policy meeting in Abuja, has generated controversy with many universities rejecting the marks.

But JAMB's Head of Information Dr. Fabian Benjamin, in a statement in Abuja, said:
"The much trending controversy over the just released cut off marks for 2017 admission exercise by stakeholders at the policy meeting is quite unnecessary.

"All Heads of tertiary institutions were requested to submit their cut off benchmark to the board which will then be used for the admission. And these benchmarks once determined cannot be changed in the middle of admission exercise.

"Again, it is necessary to explain that the 120 mark does not in any way suggest that once you have 120 then admission is sure for you. Institutions will admit from the top to the least mark.

"We are now starting the actually monitoring of adherence to admissions guide lines, cut off marks inclusive. The cut off marks being branded by the public as previous cut off marks were never strictly followed by most institutions.

"The board will equally ensure that it correct all anomalies existing, especially as regards the powers of institutions to make pronouncements on admissions and other related matters affecting the institutions."

According to him, institutions in the past went behind to admit candidates with less cut-off marks, while also accusing some institutions of admitting candidates without JAMB results.

Posted: 28 Aug 2017 03:16 AM PDT

The police in Lagos have arrested two suspected members of a syndicate for allegedly hypnotising and stealing N120,000 from a food vendor, identified as Rukayat Aderinwale.

The suspects – Fausat Tijani and Sunday Atanda – were arrested by men of the Rapid Response Squad on Saturday in the Oshodi area of Lagos.

According to a statement by the RRS, the suspects, who were arrested in Oshodi, were taking their victim to an unknown location when she regained consciousness and called for help.

The police said, "The syndicate was arrested after a failed bid to swindle a food vendor out of N120,000 and dispossess her of her jewellery in Oshodi.

"The victim was accosted and hypnotised by the five gang members and dispossessed her of a purse containing N120,000, and a mobile phone.

"They were taking her away when the lady regained consciousness and called out to RRS officers stationed nearby.

"The officers arrested Sunday Atanda, and Fausat Tijani, a 58-year-old pure water seller in Akala, Mushin, while three other members of the syndicate escaped."

Atanda was said to have identified other members of the gang as one Kayode, Shina and Lateef.

The suspect, who claimed to have joined the gang in order to make a living, allegedly told the police that the group wanted to dispossess the mother of three of all valuables when they were arrested.

The Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Olarinde Famous-Cole, said investigations were ongoing into the case, adding that the police were on the trail of other members of the syndicates.

Male Nurse Suspected Of Killing Over 80 Patients

Posted: 28 Aug 2017 03:16 AM PDT

He who should treat turned a killer? A German male nurse jailed for life two years ago for killing two patients with lethal drug overdoses is now a suspect in at least 84 more murders.

Police said Monday that Niels Hoegel, 40, was jailed in February 2015 for two murders of intensive-care patients at the Delmenhorst hospital near the northern city of Bremen.

Latest findings by Police as revealed on Monday indicates that investigators exhuming and analysing more bodies had so far found evidence of "84 more murders", which would make him one of Germany's worst ever serial killers.

Details of the discoveries are quiet troubling.

40yrs Old Man Lures Little Girl With Bread & Defiles Her

Posted: 28 Aug 2017 03:16 AM PDT

This is not normal at all...sigh! A 40-year-old man, Kehinde Gabriel, has been arraigned before a Lagos State Magistrate's Court in Ikeja for allegedly defiling a three-year-old girl in Onaosa, in the Ibeju-Lekki area of the state.

Gabriel is a native of Ogun State and neighbour of the girl's parents.

According to Punch, the girl was going to a mosque with her sisters on August 16, 2017, and was left behind when the accused laid in ambush for her.

Gabriel reportedly lured her into his apartment with a loaf of bread and drink and defiled her.

The mother of the girl told the police that the kid returned home crying, adding that blood was found in her private parts.

She said, "She went to the mosque with her other sisters on that day. After some minutes, she returned home with a bottle of drink and bread, crying.

"I asked her what was wrong and she said it was Uncle Kehinde (Gabriel) that gave the items to her. She was running temperature. While her father and I were checking her body, we saw blood in her private parts."

But the suspect denied committing the crime, saying he gave the girl food because she complained of hunger.

He said, "I saw the girl crying beside my house and I asked what happened to her. She said she was hungry and I gave her bread and beans. I did not defile her."

The Police Prosecutor, Inspector Simeon Imhonwa, who brought the suspect to court, said the offence was punishable under Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2011.

The charge read, "That, you Kehinde Gabriel, on August 16, 2017, on Ogunse Street, Onaosa, Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did unlawfully defile a three-year-old, thereby committing an offence punishable under Section137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011."

The presiding magistrate, Mrs. B.O. Osunsanmi, granted the accused bail in the sum of N500,000 with "two reputable sureties" each in like sum.

Osunsanmi added that the sureties must provide evidence of two years tax payments to the Lagos State Government.

She adjourned the case till October 17, 2017 and directed that the duplicate case file be sent to the Directorate of Public Prosecutions for legal advice.

OurMumuDonDo protesters storm EFCC, want repatriation of Madam Diezani

Posted: 28 Aug 2017 02:41 AM PDT

Since some persons accused them of not speaking about those who allegedly looted Nigeria and went to hide abroad, but came out to demand for President Buhar to resume or resign, the movement known as #OurMumuDonDo have decided to take up the challenge.

Charles Oputa, aka Charly Boy, and others on Monday morning stormed the offices of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission in Abuja to demand the repatriation of a former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Allison-Madueke.
Diezani, who served under former President Goodluck Jonathan, is being investigated for a series of multi-billion dollar fraud and money laundering offences in Nigeria, the United Kingdom and America.

Already, the courts in Nigeria had ordered the forfeiture of some properties, linked to the former ministers and believed to have been acquired with stolen wealth, to the federal government.

Diezani's associates and co-conspirators, Kola Aluko and Jide Omokore, have also been linked to corrupt practices worth billions of dollars, both in Nigeria and abroad.

Some of the money discovered so far in the said fraud are mind-boggling, to say the least.

Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte tells police to kill ''idiots'' who resists arrest | Mr Olumide's Blog

Posted: 28 Aug 2017 02:30 AM PDT

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte told police on Monday they were free to kill 'idiots' who violently resist arrest, two days after the funeral of a boy who was gunned down and left next to a pigsty by anti-drugs officers and in a direct message to his police officers, he said:
'Your duty requires you to overcome the resistance of the person you are arresting. If he resists, and it is a violent one, you are free to kill the idiots. That is my order to you.'

Duterte added that 'murder and homicide and unlawful killings' were not allowed and that police had to uphold the rule of law while carrying out their duties.
The Philippines leader unleashed the anti-drugs war  and thousands of people have been killed and the violence has been criticised by much of the international community.

The killing of schoolboy Kian Delos Santos by anti-drugs officers on August 16 has sparked rare public outrage.
Delos Santos was dragged by plain-clothes policemen to a dark, trash-filled alley in northern Manila before he was shot in the head and left next to a pigsty, according to witnesses whose accounts appeared to be backed up by CCTV footage.

Boko Haram factions ready for talks with FG-Ex commander

Posted: 28 Aug 2017 02:25 AM PDT

•Admits role on kidnap of Chibok girls, Madagali killings

By Ese Awhotu with agency report

Indications emerged yesterday that two warring factions of the Boko Haram sect are now willing to engage the Federal Government in talks aimed at bringing to a lasting end activities of the notorious gang.
An ex-commander of the Boko Haram sect, Abdulkadir Abubakar, has claimed that the two factions of the insurgency group were willing to dialogue and cooperate with the government to defeat the most visible leader of the group, Abubakar Shekau
Abubakar told the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, at his cell in Maiduguri that Albarnawi and Mamman Nur factions of Boko Haram were willing to dialogue with the Federal Government.
The ex insurgents head also claimed to have masterminded the abduction of 275 students at Government Girls Secondary School, Chibok, and the massacre of students at Federal Government College, Buni Yadi. Over 20 students were murdered at Buni Yadi.
This is in addition to being involved in other attacks on schools in Maiduguri, Damaturu, Potiskum and Mamudo.
He also confessed to several acts of bloodletting on innocent people and destruction of properties across the length and breadth of the North-eastern part of the country
NAN reports that Abubakar, also known as Abu Muhammad, was the chief intelligence officer of the Boko Haram group and one of its top commanders, until his arrest in June by the military in Buni Yadi, Gujba local government area of Yobe State.
According to him, Shekau, whose capture, dead or alive, the military high command has ordered, has been the major obstacle to peace, since the insurgency began in 2009.
"Shekau is not willing to surrender due to his high handedness. Unfortunately, the government and military authorities accorded priority on dealing with Shekau, who is blood thirsty.
"Albarnawi has indicated interest to dialogue with the government to end insurgency and provide a lasting solution to the crisis. Albarnawi discusses this with members of his circle. And I can assure the government that he would cooperate to achieve peace.
"The two factions are willing to cooperate with Nigerian Government to defeat Shekau," NAN quoted him as saying.
However, the agency, said Abubakar's claim about the readiness of the factions to dialogue with the Nigerian authorities could not be verified as he had been incarcerated since June. But he insisted that the groups are predisposed to a peaceful resolution of the eight-year-old crisis.
But the detained Boko Haram commander expressed his willingness to give the military useful information to crush the insurgents and arrest Shekau.
"I am cooperating with the military and I am ready to provide information on the whereabouts of Shekau. Shekau has left his enclave in Sambisa and moved deep into Mandara Mountain. I know the area where he is hiding and willing to provide a guide to the military.
"The intensified military offensive has weakened Shekau's position and that of the other groups," he added.
NAN further reports that Abubakar revealed deep divisions and power struggle among the insurgents, claiming the Albarnawi and Mamman Nur factions were opposed to Mr. Shekau's leadership style and his bloodthirstiness.
He also blamed Mr. Shekau for many attacks on civilians by the Boko Haram insurgents.
"During the early days of the insurgency we fought for what we thought was a just cause, to establish a caliphate where human beings are valued, cherished and respected.
"After annexing vast territories, Shekau began to demonstrate his cruelty and atrocities against humanity.
"In view of the high-level atrocities committed by the group, some of the top commanders including myself, Albarnawi and Mamman Nur challenged Shekau, demanding an immediate end to the ugly saga.
"Thereafter, Albarnawi and Mamman Nur parted ways, and formed their groups. Shekau is responsible for suicide bombings and attack on soft targets in the North-East.
"The Albarnawi and Mamman Nur groups never attacked schools, religious places of worship, markets, women and children. Our fight was strictly with security forces. Even the kidnapped oil workers would not be killed by the group," he said.
According to him, both Mamman Nur and AlBarnawi opposed the abduction of the Chibok school girls, women and children.
"Shekau is fond of using the girls and other abducted women as sex toys, and suicide bombers. He kills on the pretence of punishing for lies, theft, and rebellion. Shekau kills without justification.
"Shekau arrogated to himself the powers to accuse, prosecute, convict and punish in total contradiction to Islamic teachings. Children and women also starved to death in Sambisa due to Shekau's cruelty," he said.
Recall that the Federal Government had expressed worry over the Boko Haram factions prior to the release of the kidnapped Chibok School girls.
The ISIS had announced al-Barnawi as Boko Haram new leader but a few days later, the erstwhile leader, Abubakar Shekau, released an audio message accusing al-Barnawi of trying to stage a coup against him.
The different factions of the Boko Haram , findings indicate, differ in terms of operate and ideology. Leaving doubts as to how effective Abubakar's claim of a possible dialogue between the Boko Haram factions and the Federal Government would be.
The Boko Haram terrorists group was led by Abubakar Shekau until August 2016, when he was succeeded by Abu Musab al-Barnawi.
The group had alleged links to al-Qaeda, but in March 2015, it announced its allegiance to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).
Since the current insurgency started in 2009, it has killed tens of thousands and displaced millions from their homes and was ranked as the world's deadliest terror group by the Global Terrorism Index in 2015.

Why detractors are after Buhari’s CoS, Abba Kyari – Presidency

Posted: 28 Aug 2017 02:25 AM PDT

By Lawrence Olaoye

The presidency has said that, the Chief of Staff to President Muhammadu Buhari, Abba Kyari's shrewdness and anti-corruption stance was at the heart of grand plots by his detractors to pull him down.
Reacting to a recent newspapers report, (not Peoples Daily), which alleged that a cabal around Buhari has sidelined the Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo in the scheme of things barely one week after the return of the President from medical trip in the United Kingdom (UK), Senior Special Assistant to the President on media and publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, said the campaign was not only to discredit Kyari, but to cast aspersions on the person of the President.
Shehu, who denied the allegation insisted that Osinbajo has been part and parcel of Buhari's administration.
He said the Chief of Staff, being the head of Buhari's personal staff, rallied support for the Vice President while he was acting president when his boss was away on medical trip for over 100 days in London.
Giving reasons for criticisms against the Kyari, Shehu said "If I can speculate on the matter, I will say that the problem Malam Abba Kyari has with most people is that he, like the President he serves, will not throw money at people in order to please them.
As COS, Malam has refused to keep cash imprest and has turned down a monthly grant of N200 million customarily given to the office. This is money freely spent because they were not required to account for what they did with it."
He asked any newsman with questions to approach any of the media aides in the Presidency for answers instead of resulting in speculative stories that could distract the Buhari's administration.
"Journalists with questions to ask concerning the President and the Villa administration are please welcome approach both the Special Adviser, Femi Adesina, Laolu Akande or myself. Where we don't have your answers, we are ready to obtain as much as we can, the correct responses to your enquiry," he said.

Medical expert advocates increased funding for health

Posted: 28 Aug 2017 02:25 AM PDT

By Paul Efiong

A medical practitioner, Dr. Aminu Magashi Garba has called on members of the Nigeria Medical
Association, NMA, to come together to ensure adequate funding of tertiary health facilities in 2018.
Dr. Garba who stated this while speaking with newsmen said, "We need to come together and galvanisation action and ensure that by 2018 we have adequate funding to equip our tertiary health centres."
Garba who made this call against the backdrop of the unprecedented level of Nigerians seeking medical attention outside the country said about 40,000 Nigerians collected visa from Indian embassy for medical tourism.
The medical expert who is also the Project Director of Community Health and Research Initiative quoted the minister of health, Professor Isaac Adewole as saying, "we have to improve our services and ensure that the quality of care we are seeking abroad can also be replicated in Nigeria."
According to him, "The minister has mentioned that he is committed and working with cancer centres and other facilities that can attract the highest paid health professionals to sit at home and attend to the people of Nigeria, if we put heads together we can achieve that," he said.
He said, the Nigerian Medical Association as a professional body of medical doctors has a lot of advocacy
to do both within the country and outside the country because they are members of the medical profession, " I see them as a very strong advocacy group to really engage with government in ensuring that we have same services that any political actor can enjoy abroad."
Commenting on the National Health Dialogue, he said, "This dialogue is to raise awareness around how government, Non Governmental Organisations NGOs, development partners, the media will come together to advocate for universal health coverage. Nigeria has committed so much to universal health coverage by immunising day old children as a government, and providing medical attention for women.
He said, "So we are aiming at galvanising action for organising ourselves and telling ourselves the truth about what is going on in Nigeria in the area of universal health coverage and how to achieve it by ensuring that government is committing money and ensuring that services provide insurance programme and also available drug and commodity at the facility level."

Sallah: Ram sellers lament low patronage

Posted: 28 Aug 2017 02:25 AM PDT

Less than six days to Eid-el-Kabir celebration, ram dealers in Maiduguri are lamenting low patronage by customers.
Eid-el-Kabir celebration is marked on the 10th day of the 12th month of Islamic calendar known as Zul-Hajj and entailed the sacrificing of rams by Muslims.
A check by the News Agency of Nigeria at Kasuwar Shanu and other sales outlets indicated that ram prices had shot up by about 50 per cent in the past one year.
An average bull was sold at N120,000 as against N80,000 last year, while a thorough-bred bull attracts as much as N200,000 as against its old price of N150,000.
A medium size ram was sold at N30,000 as against its previous price of N15,000, while a well-bred ram sold for between N60,000 and N100,000.
The price of sheep and goats also indicated similar hikes as it was sold at N20,000 and N15,000 as against its previous price of N15,000 and N10,000 respectively.
Some of the dealers, who spoke to NAN, attributed the situation to low supply of animals in the area.
Hassan Adamu, a cattle dealer, said they were recording low sales due to hike in prices because the demand surpassed the supply.
"Cattle, sheep and goats are imported from Chad and Niger Republics.
"Traders from other places are no longer coming to Maiduguri due to Boko Haram insurgency. The ban imposed on cattle movement also pushed up prices," he said.
Commenting, Ba-Aji Musa, the Chairman of Livestock Dealers Association of Maiduguri, said that the Boko Haram insurgency had paralysed livestock trade in Borno.
Musa noted that all the supply routes and major cattle markets were attacked by the insurgents in the last six years.
"The cattle markets in Banki, Mongonu, Kirniwa and Gwom were closed down due to insurgency.
"Animals are no longer supplied to Maiduguri from neighbouring countries.
"Cattle transportation is banned along Kano, Monguno and Damboa roads, the only supply route is by foot from nearby villages," he said.
According to him, more than 30 trucks with an estimated 10,000 cattle were transported from Maiduguri to other part of the country on daily basis before the Boko Haram insurgency.
The chairman called on the government to expand the scope of agriculture support programme to livestock farmers to encourage growth.
Also, Buba Audu, a resident, said the hike in prices was a source of concern to them, as most families could not afford exorbitant prices.
Mr. Audu called on traders to reduce prices to enable Muslim families slaughter ram and celebrate the season in a happy mood. (NAN)

The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, has commissioned an Airmen's Club and the second phase of 3 blocks of fully furnished airmen accommodation at the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Base Makurdi.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony which took place on Thursday, the CAS, who was represented by the Air Officer Commanding Tactical Air Command, Air Vice Marshal MA Idris, said the blocks of flats were built to provide decent accommodation for the airmen while the Airmen's Club would help personnel to socialize and relax within the Base after a hard day's job.
NAF which disclosed this in a statement yesterday said the CAS stated that the provision of the accommodation and the Club was part of the ongoing efforts by the CAS to enhance NAF operational effectiveness by meeting the welfare needs of personnel.

Police declare senator as deserter

Posted: 28 Aug 2017 02:25 AM PDT

nigeria police badge logoThe Nigeria Police Force has declared a senator, Isah Misau, as a deserter from the force.
The News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, reports that the Chairman, Senate Committee on Navy, Mr. Misau, had in an interview granted to a newspaper published on August 10, alleged that police officers pay bribe for special promotion.
The lawmaker had also accused the Inspector-General of Police of embezzling N10 billion monthly Internally Generated Revenue and taking bribe to post Commissioners of Police to State Commands.
The Force spokesperson, Jimoh Moshood, who disclosed this while briefing journalists in Abuja on Sunday, said Mr. Misau deserted the force on September 24, 2010.
"The Nigeria Police Force hereby declares DSP Mohammed Isah Hamman (Sen. Isah Hamman Misau) a deserter from the Nigeria Police Force.
"The Force will definitely take appropriate action in this circumstance as it has to do with a deserter under the Police Act and Regulations," Mr. Moshood said.
He said that Mr. Misau deserted the force when he was redeployed to Niger Command where he refused to report for duty.
He said that under the Act, the Criminal Code and Penal Code treat a deserter as a suspected criminal under the law.
"All other security agencies in the country are equally implored to assist the Nigeria Police Force in this regard," he said.
He said that the retirement letter Mr. Misau presented to journalists recently was forged and dubiously obtained.
The Force spokesman said that Mr. Misau perpetuated an act of impersonation by acknowledging the receipt of the suspected forged retirement letter, as a Deputy Commissioner of police instead of his actual rank of DSP.
Mr. Moshood added that the letter dated March 5, 2014, four years after Misau with AP No. 57300 deserted the force was being investigated by the force.
"AP No. 57300 DSP Mohammed Isah Hamman is still a police officer and not regarded as a Senator by the Nigeria Police Force.
"The retirement letter he is parading is a suspected forged document under investigation.
"It is on record for the public and the media to verify that, as AP No. 57300 DSP Mohammed Isa Hamman was being wanted as a deserter, he contested and lost the Bauchi Central Senatorial seat in 2011 under the then Action Congress of Nigeria.
"This is a clear element and criminal liability of fraud and impersonation, because under the law you cannot be a police officer and still stand for election," he said.
The spokesman advised members of the public to disregard all the allegations against the I-G and the Force by Mr. Misau.
He said that considering all the above, the Force was compelled to seek the prompt consideration of the Senate Committee on Ethics and Privileges to prevail on him to return to the Force.

Why PhD holders can’t find jobs even in Saudi Arabia

Posted: 28 Aug 2017 02:25 AM PDT

By Ali Alkali (From Madinah, Saudi Arabia)

The number of unemployed youth is disturbing even in rich countries like Saudi Arabia, as hundreds of thousands of highly educated citizens, some PhD holders, seek employments that are not available.
"This is an appalling fact", according to a special report published by Saudi Gazette Weekend on Friday, August 26, 2017, lamenting that "While we accept that our society is home to unemployed Saudis with undergraduate degrees, having an increasing number of PhD holders who are unemployed is shocking."
Unlike in Nigeria, however, where the unemployed are graduates of Nigerian universities, the unemployment hammer in Saudi Arabia mostly hit those educated in foreign universities.
"This situation" according to the Saudi Gazettee Weekend, "reflects on the poor planning on the part of the bodies that allow students to go abroad to study when there is little possibility of them finding jobs when they return to the Kingdom. Each PhD student costs the government a lot of money in tuition fees. The postgraduate studies program should have a clear vision to stop this problem from recurring and to ensure that PhD students have jobs when they return to the Kingdom.
"These unemployed Saudis should be teaching at our universities and not be sitting idle at home. They are supposed to benefit our country and share their knowledge with Saudi students. After all, they spent many sleepless nights abroad studying."
Back home, we can recall that the ugly unemployment statistics of Nigerians with advanced degrees had hit the media and became a top subject of discussion last year when candidates with PhD degrees applied for drivers' jobs at Dangote Group.
The number of applications from first and higher degree holders who sought employment as drivers in the Dangote group was staggering and highly disturbing. Of the 13,000 applications received by the Dangote Group for the100 "Graduate Executive Truck Driver" positions advertised, there were six PhD, 704 Masters and over 8,460 Bachelor degree holders.
Speaking during the mentor-ship meeting of the World Bank Youth Forum, Chairman of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, said that the company only needed 100 drivers, but received that overwhelming applications.
In any growing economy, it is rather shocking that PhD and Masters degree holders are seeking employment as drivers. Development experts believe that the Dangote Group revelation was a wake up call for governments to go beyond rhetoric and start the implementation of credible programmes to improve the living condition of their citizens. It is no longer enough to claim that the economy is growing by this or that percent.
Looking for someone to take the blame for the disturbing unemployment situation of highly educated citizens, the Saudi Gazettee Weekend said, "The real problem lies in our universities and major companies, which are full of expatriate professors. While it is vital for universities to have professors of different backgrounds and nationalities, it is unwise that the number of non-Saudi professors exceeds that of Saudi professors. There should be some balance. Moreover, some non-Saudi professors have fake degrees while others have been involved in improper practices in their home countries.
"We should find a rapid solution to this problem. Saudi students have worked hard overseas to get their PhDs and have spent years studying and researching. They deserve a better chance. They are our national assets and we should be proud of them."
Though academic qualifications have a lot of benefits, the Saudi authorities and civil society are beginning to realize that most academic studies are theoretical and do not focus on practical training, which is indispensable.
So, according to a different report published by the Saudi Gazettee Weekend, the way to find solution to the problem is ON-THE-JOB TRAINING which they now consider "more important than academic studies."
They realize that the labor market is in dire need of training programs that can help young Saudi men and women quickly adapt to the job environment and find employment.
Speaking with Peoples Daily, a Makkah-based Development Analyst, Abdallah Al-Jaithen, said: "To better enforce Saudization, we need to focus on this sort of training. A high school graduate should be encouraged to find work while simultaneously completing his education. Employers should hire and train fresh graduates as a way of investing in them. We could start implementing this training program in certain fields as a starter and then focus on other sectors such as the retail sector to achieve 100 percent Saudization. Expatriate workers seem to control this field and put obstacles in the way of Saudis who try to enter.
"I strongly believe in the benefits of on-the-job training because I underwent some when l was at school. When I joined the Ministry of Haj (known then as the Ministry of Haj and Endowments), I had an intermediate school diploma. I worked for the ministry and attended school in the evening.
"Although I did not study any specialized mathematics and accounting subjects at school, I worked for the accounting department. I underwent on-the-job training and learned how to keep financial records. My job was not easy and involved a large amount of verifying, revising and auditing. The most difficult part was going to the Ministry of Finance at the end of each month for a final revision. If even one riyal was missing, I would be held accountable for it. I had to be very meticulous. The training period lasted for three weeks but was intensive. With the help of colleagues, I learned the job and became good at it.
"Before joining the ministry, I never thought that I would ever work as an accountant, as l was more focused on reading classic Arabic books. Shortly after the training period was over, I found myself drawn to accounting. I am sure if young Saudi men and women were given similar opportunities, they would excel in these fields even though they may not think of them as their dream jobs."

Arewa lauds northern youth over withdrawal of quit notice to Igbo

Posted: 28 Aug 2017 02:25 AM PDT

From Mohammad Ibrahim, Kaduna

Arewa Consultative Forum( ACF) welcomes the withdrawal of the quit notice issued to the Igbos living in the Northern part of Nigeria to leave before the October 1st, 2017, by the Northern Youth Coalition.
A statement signed by the group's Publicity Secretary Mohammad Ibrahim Biu described the withdrawal as a good development in the interest of peace, unity and corporate existence of Nigeria.
ACF said the decision also demonstrates the magnanimity of the youths to heed to wise counseling and respect for constituted authority.
"ACF commends them for placing the interest of Nigeria above all other considerations. ACF had earlier called on all concerned, to note, that our democratic system of government, which is anchored on the rule of law and the provisions of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, guarantees free movement of all Nigerians to any part of the country and to pursue their means of livelihood devoid of any hindrance or molestation from any group or individuals.
"However, this freedom is not absolute, as every aspiration shall only be pursued within the ambit of the law. ACF therefore commends the efforts of the Chairman, Northern States Governors Forum, Alhaji Kashim Shettima and other leaders of thought from the North who persuaded the Northern Youths to withdraw the quit notice in the interest of peaceful coexistence and unity of Nigeria.
"ACF urges the Igbo Leaders to also prevail on the IPOB Biafra agitators to respect the sovereignty and corporate entity of Nigeria and jettison their agitation for Biafra, as we cannot have another country within Nigeria.
"ACF particularly hails the earlier efforts of the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, who had engaged the Northern leaders, Traditional Rulers, Igbo Leaders and other stakeholders in an interactive meetings that doused the tension created by the IPOB Biafra agitators and the subsequent quit notice given by the Northern Youths Coalition to the Igbos living in the North.
ACF therefore appeals to all Nigerians to heed to the Federal Government's warning against hate speeches and violent agitations that are capable of jeopardizing our peaceful coexistence as a nation, "the statement reads

The Most Wanted Identity Thief In Toronto Is A Nigerian?

Posted: 28 Aug 2017 02:11 AM PDT

"Johnson Chrome was born Adekunle Johnson Omitiran on January 31, 1980, in the Oshodi slums of Lagos, Nigeria. His father, Gbadebo, was a travelling businessman from southwestern Nigeria.

When he was a boy, Mr. Gbadebo left Johnson's mother, a Fulani woman from Nigeria's north, and at one point allegedly had as many as six wives. Mr. Gbadebo studied at the University of Exeter in the U.K. and later found his way to Toronto.

Johnson's mother was left to raise him and his brother and stepbrother, with the help of her father, who took the family in. Johnson didn't respond to interview requests for this story, but sources in Nigeria say he spent much of his childhood on the streets, getting shooed away from the local markets by vendors, who didn't want a poor kid hanging around.

According to one childhood friend, he wasn't a troublemaker and had no criminal record. He later attended Lagos State University, and in 2003, when he was 23, his father brought him to Toronto.

Johnson enrolled at York University, where he studied economics and lived modestly in a basement apartment near campus. Less than a year later, police believe, he entered the world of fraud. In January 2004, Canada customs intercepted a suspicious parcel destined for Chrome's apartment.

The package had come from Nigeria, and it was heavy enough to qualify for inspection. Inside, officials discovered 36 envelopes addressed to various people in the U.S., each containing a counterfeit cheque for roughly $10,000. The intended recipients had placed ads online selling various items; fraudsters, posing as brokers, wrote letters explaining they wanted to buy the item, but their buyers had already written a cheque for more than the asking price.

Would the recipient be so kind as to deposit it and wire back the difference? In most instances of the scam, the intended target is skeptical and ignores the letter, but inevitably, some obey the enclosed instructions.

By the time the bank catches on and cancels the transaction, the account holder is on the hook and the scammer is in the wind, a few thousand dollars richer.

These kinds of frauds are so popular in Nigeria that they're now known globally as 419 scams, which refers to the section of Nigeria's criminal code pertaining to fraud. Police claim that Chrome's job was to mail the letters from Canada, bypassing the suspicions of U.S. Postal Service officials."
