Woman Sues NYPD After Cop Allegedly Arrested Her for Rejecting His Sexual Advances | Mr Olumide's Blog

Posted: 07 Jan 2018 12:16 AM PST

A Brooklyn woman is suing the city of New York and NYPD Officer Javier Munoz after a traffic stop turned into a case of sexual harassment.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Jasmine Campbell is asking for $2M for a traffic stop on Feb. 26, 2014, during which Munoz allegedly "kept looking at me and leaned in like he wanted to have a private talk."
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

"He kept looking down at my chest. He asked me, 'Do you have anything underneath your shirt?' I said, 'No.' I felt embarrassed. He leaned in further and asked, 'Do you want to show me something?' He said that with a smirk on his face.""Now, all this sexual harassment is big news — but I have been telling the same story since 2014. This is not something new to me," she added.
⠀⠀
According to ABC News, the stop happened while Campbell was on her way to get something to eat with a friend. On the way, she was stopped by Munoz and another, unidentified cop. Munoz ordered Campbell out of the driver's seat with her hands up, where the other cop allegedly asked her for a hug, which she refused.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Unknown to Campbell, her friend was carrying a small amount of marijuana. Both of them were taken to the 75th Precinct after he confessed. However, the friend was released with a ticket while Campbell was booked on misdemeanor charges of resisting arrest, obstructing governmental administration and criminal possession of marijuana.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀
Munoz and the city have denied the claims, saying,
"There was probable cause for [Campbell's] arrest, detention, and subsequent prosecution." They attempted to reach a settlement with Campbell for $2,500, but she rejected.
⠀⠀
Campbell's lawyer, Lawrence LaBrew said, "The arrest of Ms. Campbell was a sham and the city appears to be condoning this conduct, based on their position."

Posted: 06 Jan 2018 09:45 PM PST

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, (NNPC) has once again said it has no plan to increase price of premium motor spirit, (PMS) otherwise known as petrol in country.

NNPC in a statement by Ndu Ughamadu, Group General Manager Public Affairs Division, said the pump price of petrol remains N143 per litre in NNPC Retail outlets and N145 in other fuel stations, while maintaining PMS ex-depot price of N133.28k per litre to marketers.

"In the last few weeks, the corporation has increased its daily truck-outs of PMS per day to ensure petrol sufficiency across the states of the federation.

"Motorists and other consumers of petroleum products are assured that NNPC has a robust sufficiency of petroleum products to cater for their daily consumption.

"Marketers are hereby cautioned against hoarding or diversion, as law enforcement agencies have been enjoined to deal appropriately with defaulters.

"Again, NNPC affirms that it has no intension, whatsoever, to execute any increase in the pump price of petrol, as such the price of PMS stands at N143 per litre in NNPC Retail outlets and N145 per litre in other fuel stations."

25 migrants drown in fresh push to Italy from Libya | Mr Olumide's Blog

Posted: 06 Jan 2018 01:06 PM PST

At least 25 migrants are feared to have drowned in a shipwreck off Libya after a dinghy, possibly carrying some 150 migrants, ran into trouble, two rescue organisations said Saturday.

"Rubber dinghy sunk north of Tripoli. At least 25 people died in the incident, exact numbers still unclear. Italian navy on the scene," the German charity Sea Watch said on Twitter.

The Italian coast guard told AFP 85 people had been rescued from the sinking vessel, and eight bodies recovered so far.

It was believed to be the first shipwreck of 2018 — though rescue organisations say countless dinghies attempting to cross the Mediterranean are likely to sink without a trace, meaning the year's death toll may have begun even earlier.

The alarm was sounded after a surveillance aircraft deployed in the EU anti-trafficking mission Sophia spotted the partly-submerged dinghy some 40 miles off the Libyan coast, in international waters.

"Shipwreck off the coast of Libya, east of Tripoli. Dozens of people missing who will die without a burial," tweeted the Spanish charity Proactiva Open Arms.

Sea Watch said it had been alerted to the disaster by the coast guard, which believed 150 people had been aboard.

"The search continues for survivors," said the coast guard, which was aided in the rescue by a navy vessel.

Last year, 3,116 people died trying to cross from North Africa to Europe, according to Doctors Without Borde

Nigerian Nanny Gets N44m From Oppressive Nigerian Couple In US

Posted: 06 Jan 2018 05:10 AM PST

The Nsobundus, the Nigerian couple living in the Houston-area of the United States has been ordered by an American court to pay $121,000 as restitution to the Nigerian woman who worked for 20 hours a day for two years as the nanny to their five children.

The nanny was not paid throughout the period. Now she has a N44m windfall.

Chudy Nsobundu, 57, and his wife Sandra Nsobundu, 49, also were sentenced by U.S. District Judge Nancy Atlas to seven months in jail and seven months of home confinement, plus three years on probation.

The Associated Press reported that the naturalized U.S. citizens originally from Nigeria recruited the woman there with the promise of a $100 monthly wage. Instead, authorities said they abused her physically and verbally while she worked at their home in the Houston suburb of Katy from September 2013 to October 2015.

Chudy Nsobundu in 2016 pleaded guilty to visa fraud while his wife pleaded guilty to unlawful conduct with respect to documents in furtherance of forced labor.

According to court documents, the nanny would work every day from 5:30 a.m. to 1 a.m., couldn't take breaks and had to eat leftovers and not fresh food, including being forced to only drink milk left in bowls in which the children had eaten cereal. She also couldn't take hot showers.

Authorities said the Nsobundus prevented the nanny from leaving their employment by keeping her passport and by threatening her with physical and mental abuse.

The nanny reached out for help and was rescued following a tip to the National Human Trafficking Resource Center. Her name has not been released.

Prosecutors say the couple knowingly caused a false visa application for the victim to be submitted to the Department of State with numerous pieces of false information.

The woman's date of birth was incorrect on the application, listing her 20 years older than she was, said she was married when she was not, incorrectly indicated the purpose of her travel was to attend a niece's graduation and falsely identified her in a letter that Chudy Nsobundu was her brother. Prosecutors also said he made false representations under oath on the visa application to increase the chances that the application would be accepted and to hide the fact she'd be working for his family as a housemaid and nanny under conditions that violated U.S. labor laws.

Federal prosecutors said Sandra Nsobundu took the nanny to the U.S. Embassy in Lagos, Nigeria, to obtain her visa and provided her with a letter indicating she didn't speak English well, that she was to attend a family graduation and gave her a picture of her husband with instructions that she tell embassy officials he was the nanny's brother and that she was married. The nanny's husband listed on the visa application actually was the Nsobundus' driver in Nigeria. (NAN)

How Kenny Ogungbe saved me from having baby mamas- Eedris Abdulkareem, | Mr Olumide's Blog

Posted: 06 Jan 2018 04:31 AM PST

At a point when singer, Eedris Abdulkareem, thought nothing of sowing his wild oats, he got some wise words from none other than his one-time label boss, Kenny Ogungbe.

Although a lot has been heard about the controversial singer, not much is known about his family life. In a chat with Saturday Beats, the singer opened up on how Kenny Ogungbe, fondly called Baba Keke, helped to shape his life.

He said,
"My wedding day was a very lavish one and Baba Keke was my best man. I chose Baba Keke to be my best man because he has always been like the father I never had. I lost my father when I was only three years old. When I was still at Kennis Music, I went to collect my royalties when I met Baba Keke and he called me aside to give me a piece of advice.

"He told me that he really loved me and that was why he was advising me. He told me that I should make sure I got married as soon as possible. He advised me to ensure that I married only one woman and I should not let any woman other than my wife bear children for me. I agreed with him. He further told me to make sure I did not waste my sperm on different women. He told me to settle down and be a responsible man. That advice has helped shaped my life since then. A lot of girls I dated at the time were not happy with my choice of wife but I was happy about it. In fact, I intentionally avoided throwing a bachelor party because I knew something could happen that night that would ruin my marriage. After we got married, we went on a honeymoon and my wife got pregnant a month later."
The 'Nigeria jaga jaga ' singer told Saturday Beats that the instant he laid eyes on his wife, he knew she was going to be his wife. Just like a scene from a Nollywood movie, the singer said that the first time he saw her, she was a damsel in distress.

"I was on my way to the video shoot of my song, 'Life in Yankee' when I saw a lady trying to fix the tyre on her car. I take everything that has to do with marriage very spiritual because God says that if you want a wife we should ask him. So, I had prayed for a very long time for God to give me a wife that would compliment me. Immediately I saw her, I parked and helped her fix the tyre. Immediately I saw her, I could feel that she was my wife.
He said,
"When I parked to help her, my mind told me she was going to be my wife. The first thing I looked out for was whether there was a ring on her finger. I needed to be sure that she was not married. I also noticed that there was a child in her car.
"So, I thought she was either married or a single parent. While I was still assisting her with the tyre, her brother showed up. So, I took him aside to ask if she was married and he said she was not. I enquired about the child and her brother confirmed to me that it was his. I later got her house address from him."

Not leaving things to chance, the singer said that he went to the house the next day and when he knocked on the door, he was confronted by her father.

Abdulkareem said,
"Luckily, he recognised me. He said he had seen me before on television. The father asked what I was doing in his house and I explained to him that I came to see his daughter, Yetunde, and he welcomed me.

"I admitted to him that she did not invite me to the house but I came because I did not want my wife to run away. Eventually, she came to meet me but was furious because she did not invite me to her house.
"I apologised for the intrusion then explained to her that I wanted to marry her and did not care how long it would take because God told me that she was my wife.

"I was not afraid to open up to her in her father's house because I prayed and fasted for four years before I met her. She was really furious but I tried my best to apologise. When her father heard all I had said. he asked if I was truly serious and my reply was affirmative.
"I later got her number but it took me another six months to convince her that I was not fooling her and that was how it started. She felt that as a very popular musician I had women flocking to me. We are still together 16 years after."

1050 Boko Haram insurgents surrender | Mr Olumide's Blog

Posted: 06 Jan 2018 04:31 AM PST

The Nigerian Army on Saturday said 1, 050 insurgents had surrendered to troops in Lake Chad and Monguno general area of operations, as it also warned that many of them are on the run.

The army urged abutting communities to watch out for the fleeing Boko Haram insurgents as their enclaves in Lake Chad region come under intense onslaught.

Col. Onyema Nwachukwu, the Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, Operation Lafiya Dole, made the disclosure in a statement issued in Maiduguri.

Nwachukwu disclosed that 250 fighters of the Al Barnawi-led faction of the insurgents had surrendered to Nigerian Army, sequel to artillery and aerial bombardments by troops of Operation Lafiya Dole of their enclaves in Lake Chad basin.

He added that 700 insurgents also surrendered to troops at Monguno in an ongoing clearance operation.

Nwachukwu explained that Mamman Nur, another factional leader of the insurgents sustained fatal injuries and one of his wives killed in the operation, while many of the insurgents who escaped, surrendered to Niger Defence Forces.

The army spokesman noted that some of the insurgents fleeing from the ongoing offensive were senior and junior commanders of the Al Barnawi faction.

"The insurgents are attempting to melt into communities in and around Kano, Geidam and Gashua axis unnoticed. One of such fleeing commanders is Bana Bafui.

"Members of the general public, particularly in Kano, Geidam, Gashua, Hadejia and northern part of Jigawa State are therefore enjoined to be vigilant, watch out for strange faces in their communities and report same to security agencies".

Nwachukwu called on the insurgents to surrender, adding that the Federal Government has provided a window through the Operation SAFE CORRIDOR to encourage the insurgents' voluntary surrender.

He revealed that about 300 insurgents were currently undergoing de-radicalization process for possible integration into the society.

"We call on Boko Haram insurgents to abandon the futile struggle; take advantage of the Safe Corridor programme and surrender to troops in any location nearest to them.

"We guarantee their safety and incorporation into the programme for de-radicalization and rehabilitation". (NAN)
