A Prayer for the Year Ahead: Dear God, We thank you that you know our way and you have a plan. We thank you for all this past year has brought, for the struggles as well as the blessings, because we know that you work through all things and will use them for good somehow, and for your glory. We confess our need for you again, for the fresh filling of your Spirit. We ask that you would make all things new, in our hearts, in our minds, in our lives, for this coming year. We pray for your refreshing over us and for your deep peace within. We ask for your wisdom, for your strength and power to be constantly present in us. We pray you would make us strong and courageous for the road ahead. Give us ability beyond what we feel able, let your gifts flow freely through us, so that you would be honored by our lives, and others would be drawn to you. We ask you to keep our footsteps firm, on solid ground, helping us to be consistent and faithful. Give us supernatural endurance to stay the course, not swerving to the right or to the left, or being too easily distracted by other things that would seek to call us away from a close walk with you. We ask for your hand to cover us and keep us distanced from the evil intent of the enemy; that you would be a barrier to surround us, that we'd be safe in your hands. | Deaths from surgeries highest in Africa | Mr Olumide's Blog Posted: 04 Jan 2018 02:13 AM PST  According to a study published in the Lancet medical journal, scientists said contributory factors include few specialists, poor hospital infrastructure and a lack of post-operative monitoring. "Patients receiving surgery in Africa are younger than the global average, with a lower-risk profile and lower complication rates, and yet are twice as likely to die," the authors wrote. The survey, the most comprehensive study of surgery in Africa, was funded by the Medical Research Council of South Africa and covered 247 hospitals in 25 countries. It showed about one in five surgery patients developed a complication. Comparisons with international data for elective surgery showed that death rates from elective surgery were one per cent in Africa compared with 0.5 per cent for the global average. The authors said infections accounted for more than half of complications. The most common procedure was caesarian delivery. The authors suggested many lives could be saved by improving patient monitoring during and after surgery. They said a lack of crucial equipment and supplies hampered surgical care in Africa; a quarter of hospitals have no reliable oxygen source, a third do not have reliable electricity and nearly half do not have dedicated postoperative care. Data showed there were just 0.7 specialists per 100,000 people in the study countries, around 30 times lower than the levels needed to reduce mortality. Although the main aim of the study was to examine surgical outcomes, the authors said the most alarming finding was how few people actually received surgery. An average of 212 operations per 100,000 people were performed in the study countries, 20 times lower than the level required to meet a country's surgical needs. | Benue Killing: Police Arrest 8 Fulani Herdsmen Posted: 04 Jan 2018 01:08 AM PST  The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Moses Yamu, announced this in a statement made available to NAN on Wednesday in Makurdi. "Eight herdsmen, six in Guma and two in Logo, had been arrested in connection with the attacks," the police spokesman said. He added that the command had made additional deployments to the troubled area to forestall further occurrence and restore confidence of the people. Mr. Yamu stressed the situation in the two local government areas had been brought under control while investigation was ongoing. He said: "They attacked Tomater village in Sengev Council ward, Akor village in Nzorov council ward and Bakin Kwata village in Umanger council ward of Guma LGA. "Among those killed were seven (7) members of Benue State Livestock Guards, their vehicle burnt and an uncertain number of persons injured in separate attacks between 31/12/2017 and 02/01/2018. "Again, Agba-Uko near Azege village and Tse-Aga village of Logo LGA experienced the same fate, where one person was killed, one motorcycle burnt and four persons injured. "All the injured from both LGAs are currently undergoing treatment in various hospitals in the State." According to him, five combined teams of mobile and conventional policemen led by Assistant Commissioner of Police, Operations, Emmanuel Adesina, have engaged the armed herdsmen in a gun duel in Guma. The Benue governor said on Tuesday that 20 people were killed in the attacks. The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the Benue Anti-Open Grazing Law came into effect on November 1, 2017 to forestall attacks on Benue communities by suspected herders. The law stipulates five year jail term or an option of N1 million fine for violators. | Badoo Killings In Lagos: Alleged Leader Alaka's Filling Station Sealed Posted: 04 Jan 2018 12:43 AM PST  The structures, situated along Ijebu-Ode-Itoikin Road in Sabo area of Ikorodu were sealed for violating the State's Urban and Regional Planning Law of 2010. The Police, had on December 22, 2017, declared Alaka wanted in connection with series of well-orchestrated killings and nefarious activities of the Badoo cult group in Ikorodu and Epe area of the State. Alaka is suspected to be the ring leader of the Badoo menace. The State Government, in a statement by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Steve Ayorinde, said the order sealing off the structures was in pursuant to Section 60 of the said Law. The State Commissioner of Police, Mr Imohimi Edgal, on Tuesday, paraded a Badoo kingpin arrested in the Ikorodu axis who confessed to the killings and took Police to their shrine in Imosan, a suburb of Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, where the group's chief herbalist, Fatai Adebayo was arrested. Adebayo, who is popularly known as Alese, was said to specialise in administering oath on Badoo members before they go for any operation. According to Ayorinde, "The Lagos State Government is joining the Nigerian Police in asking the said Alaka to come out of hiding and submit himself to the law in his own interest. "The State Government has also enjoined the Police to offer the public a reward for any useful information on the owner of the Alaka Filling Station, Hotel and Event Centre in Ikorodu. "The government is once again asking its citizens to go about their business without fear. | "No Light": Nigeria’s Electricity Grid Collapses Posted: 04 Jan 2018 12:13 AM PST  It was learnt that the collapse was due to a fire incident on the Escravos Lagos Pipeline System of the Nigerian Gas Processing and Transportation Company Limited. The incident led to a shutdown of the pipeline that supplies gas to six thermal power plants, which prompted the collapse of the country's electricity grid at 10:20pm on Tuesday. This was confirmed by the Federal Ministry of Power, Works and Housing in a statement issued around 12:44am on Wednesday. The ministry said it was regrettable that after a sustained period of increasing production and distribution of power since September 2017 to date, the Nigerian Gas Processing and Transportation Company Ltd reported a fire incident on its Escravos Lagos Pipeline System near Okada, Edo State on Tuesday, January 2, 2018. It said, "The incident requires a shutdown of the pipeline supplying gas to Egbin 1,320megawatts; Olorunsogo NIPP 676MW; Olorunsogo 338MW; Omotosho NIPP 450MW; Omotosho 338 MW; and Paras 60MW power stations. "The sudden loss of generation due to interruption in gas supply from these stations caused the national transmission grid to trip off around 20:20 on 2nd January 2018. The national transmission grid is owned and operated by the Transmission Company of Nigeria." | World's most expensive bottle of vodka worth $1.3m gets stolen | Mr Olumide's Blog Posted: 03 Jan 2018 07:48 PM PST  Brian Ingberg, owner of Café 33 - the Copenhagen bar which housed the bottle, made of gold, silver and a diamond-encrusted cap - posted about the disappearance of the lavish liquor on Facebook. He shared a photo of the bottle alongside a security camera still showing a man with his face hidden beneath a white baseball cap and high turtle neck sweater swiping the spirit from the establishment. Ingberg said in his Facebook post that someone entered Café 33 "with key" and stole the Russo-Baltique vodka.The bottle is believed to be worth about $1.3 million. It was produced by a car manufacturer called Dartz Motorz, based out of Latvia, according to Newsweek. The bottle design is a nod to an early Russian carmaker that shut down production in 1917, following the Russian Revolution, Deutsche Welle reported. One of the brand's classic car models was carved into the bottle along with an inscription that read, "Family Relique Vodka Russo-Baltique." A proprietor for Café 33 said the bottle was not insured. In fact, it didn't even belong to the establishment or its owner.A Russian entrepreneur reportedly loaned it to the facility for show. | APC declares PDP dead | Mr Olumide's Blog Posted: 03 Jan 2018 07:48 PM PST  The Assistant Publicity Secretary of the APC in the state, Mr Abiodun Salami, said on Wednesday in Lagos it was laughable, the bluff of PDP. He said PDP had been completely decimated and so ,could not make any impact in the governorship election let alone winning. Salami was reacting to an assertion by the Publicity Secretary of PDP in the state, Mr Taofik Gani, that the opposition party would win Lagos and take over government in 2019. Gani had told NAN on Tuesday that 2019 would be the beginning of the end of APC administration in the state as the party was sure of dislodging the ruling party. He had claimed that Lagosians were tired of the"non-performance of APC government "and were eagerly waiting to vote PDP. "We will shock the APC in 2019.Take my words. We already have a lot of novel ideas to wrestle governance from them. But Salami said the opposition 's assertion was an empty boast as Lagosians knew the difference between the light and retrogression and would continue to vote the APC. "The assertion made by the PDP that it would win the state in 2019 is a huge joke. In fact it is laughable. He said he was surprised that PDP was still boasting of winning some House of Assembly seats in 2015 when all but one elected lawmakers had since defected to the APC. He said the recent defection of now fewer than 1500 former PDP members to APC was further confirmation that the opposition party had no place in the state. Salami said Lagosians trusted the APC government in the state to deliver impactful leadership, saying PDP lacked the drive for progress. "Gov. "This is one attack too many, and everything must be done to provide security for the people in our rural communities," he said. President Buhari also commiserated with families of the victims and wished the injured speedy healing. At least 20 persons were killed and 30 others injured by gunmen suspected to be herdsmen.
