How A Child of God Deals With Life's Challenges

Posted: 16 Jan 2018 02:24 AM PST

Those of you who read the Bible may be familiar with the following verse (a favorite verse of my amazing wife I might add):
And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. – Romans 8:28

Notice that it doesn't say that in "some things" or a "few things" or "only through good things" God works. And it certainly doesn't say, as many misquote, "all things happen for a reason," as if God isn't working and things are "just" happening. It says that "in all things God works for the good of those who love him…".

I don't want to over-spiritualize this topic, but I love him and I believe he has, is, and will continue to work these things in my life for my good and for his purposes.

I also believe that ultimately, it's not what happens to us that defines us. It's how we respond. It's what we do with what we've been given, good or bad.

You've been challenged… now GO!

Obasanjo successfully completes his PhD at NOUN

Posted: 16 Jan 2018 01:29 AM PST

Former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, is among 14,771 persons expected to receive honours at the 7th convocation of National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Prof. Abdalla Adamu, NOUN's Vice-Chancellor, has said.

The former president is expected to receive a doctorate in Christian Theology.

Adamu said this at a news briefing on the institution's 2018 convocation scheduled for January 20 at its s headquarters in Jabi, Abuja.

He said Obasanjo would be considered for an appointment as a facilitator or supervisor as PhD was the least qualification for one to teach in the institution.

The vice-chancellor said 14,771 was the highest number any institution in Nigeria had ever graduated at a convocation ceremony.

He said in spite of being a former president, Obasanjo conducted himself properly and deservedly bagged Doctor of Philosophy in Christian Theology.

"One of the graduands is the first PhD graduate the institution will produce; a university must graduate students at academic Masters Level before graduating PhD.

"Only one candidate has been able to do that and that is Obasanjo; the Senate has found him worthy of the award and approved the conferment of PhD on him.

"There are lessons to be learnt from Obasanjo's feat – one is never too old to learn; Obasanjo was about 80 years when he started the programme and has finished it at 82.

"Again, one is never too powerful to learn; he was the president twice and yet subjected himself to learning; learning is a humbling process.

"We will consider him for the post of a facilitator or supervisor; maybe for our Abeokuta Study Centre; we will suggest it to him.''

NAAN reports that Adamu said that because of Obasanjo's achievement, NOUN had received requests from other older citizens.

Germany Pays People In The Country To Use Electricity

Posted: 16 Jan 2018 12:29 AM PST

On Christmas Eve and early into the next day, Germany's power trading exchange, EPEX Spot, had to pay companies and other large energy consumers up to $60 per megawatt-hour to use energy.

The company bills consumers negative rates when too much power is generated from renewables and there's a low demand for it.

In general, experts say, solar and wind generation is wildly inconsistent, with a lot of it based on the season.

The online publication, Green Matters, reports that, for example, Germany expects wind turbines to produce around 12 percent of overall power, but that the number can significantly rise if there's major winds.

"With more capacity being added all the time, it can supply far more energy than anticipated," the medium says.

It adds that Germany alone has spent over $200bn on the renewable industry in the last 20 years; and since fossil fuel can't shut down and restart easily, it's better for the exchange to pay consumers (to use the excess energy being produced).

The power generation has been so high now that, for over 100 times in 2017 alone, the company had had to send zero bills to consumers just to encourage them to use electricity!

"The situation is more frequent than other European countries have seen.

"We now have technology that cannot produce according to the demand, but is producing according to the weather," Tobias Kurth, managing director of Energy Brainpool, said.

"(This is one) of the key challenges in the whole transition of the energy market to renewable power," Green Matters reports.

In related instance, the American State of California had invested heavily in solar power. Now, there's so much that other states are sometimes paid to take it.

According to LA Times, last March, for 14 straight days, Arizona utilities got a gift of free solar power from California.

California produced so much solar power on those days that it paid Arizona to take excess electricity its residents weren't using to avoid overloading its own power lines.

"It happened on eight days in January and nine in February as well.

"All told, those transactions helped save Arizona electricity customers millions of dollars in 2017, though grid operators declined to say exactly how much.

"And California also had paid other states to take power," LA Times says.

The number of days that California dumped its unused solar electricity would have been even higher if the state hadn't ordered some solar plants to reduce production — even as natural gas power plants, which contribute to greenhouse gas emissions, continued generating electricity, the online medium says.

Solar and wind power production was curtailed a relatively small amount — about 3% in the first quarter of 2017 — but that's more than double the same period last year. And the surge in solar power could push the number even higher in the future.

"The state has achieved dramatic success in increasing renewable energy production in recent years.

"But it also reflects sharp conflicts among major energy players in the state over the best way to weave these new electricity sources into a system still dominated by fossil-fuel-generated power," LA Times reports.

Mike Ozekhome mobbed at Gani Fawehinmi lecture for ‘defending corrupt politicians’

Posted: 15 Jan 2018 11:09 PM PST

There was a mild drama at the 14th Gani Fawehinmi Annual Lecture on Monday when protesters mobbed Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN) and stopped him from entering the venue of the programme.

The incident happened at the Lagos Airport Hotel, Ikeja, venue of the lecture organised by the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Ikeja Branch.

The theme of the lecture was: "Federalism, Restructuring and Good Governance: Striking a Balance."

Ozekhome, who arrived the venue at 1:10 p.m., was stopped from entering the hall by the protesters comprising youths and students.

They milled round the lawyer, composed songs in defamatory words and stopped him from entering the hall.

The incident forced the keynote speaker, a former Dean of Faculty of Law, Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Prof. Demola Popoola, to stop his paper presentation for about 20 minutes.

Those at the high table were the former General Secretary of the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), Chief Frank Ovie Kokori who was chairman of the event and the Adeboruwa of Igbogbo, Oba Semiu Orimadegun Kasali; among others.

The protesters accused the lawyer of defending Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose; former First Lady, Mrs. Patience Jonathan and Senate President, Bukola Saraki; among others.

Why Nigeria’s Economy Will Be Better In 2018

Posted: 15 Jan 2018 10:34 PM PST

The Minister of Budget and National Planning, Udoma Udo Udoma, has assured Nigerians that the economy would be better in 2018.

Udoma gave the assurance in a statement signed by his Media Adviser, Mr. Akpandem James, in Abuja.

The minister spoke at an economic forum organised by the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Kings Court Parish, Lagos, on Sunday.

He said the economy would significantly be better in 2018 going by the consistent positive trend of key indicators since the country emerged from recession in the second quarter of 2017.

He said international and local rating agencies had shared same view that the Nigerian economy would grow rapidly in the year.

Udoma said the growth would create opportunities for investment in agriculture and agro-processing, industry, mining, construction and services.

The minister, however, assured that the Federal Government would continue to sustain the implementation of the Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP).

"The government is determined to lead in that effort and appealed to the private sector to respond to the various initiatives which the government has been rolling out.

"There is no doubt that more work needs to be done and we all must work together to achieve sustainable results," he stated.

Udoma said the ERGP was designed to tackle constraints to growth, leverage the power of the private sector, promote national cohesion and social inclusion, allow markets to function and uphold our core values.

Parents arrested after their 13 children are found bound and shakled | Mr Olumide's Blog

Posted: 15 Jan 2018 06:00 PM PST

Two parents have been arrested after 13 of their children were shackled to beds inside their home in California, police say.

The victims, all siblings aged between two and 29 years old, were being held captive at the home of David Allen Turpin, 57, and Louise Anna Turpin, 49, in Perris, California, police said.

Riverside County Sheriff's Department began investigating after a 17-year-old girl freed herself, escaped the home and called the police on a cell phone she stole from inside the property on Sunday morning, cops said.

The teenager, who was so emaciated police thought she was just 10 years old, told cops her 12 siblings were being held inside the home at 160 Muir Woods Road.

State records appear to suggest David Turpin home-schools his six children at their address - calling it Sandcastle Day School - however this has not been confirmed.

Officers arrived at the home early on Sunday morning and found several children and adults chained and padlocked to beds in a foul-smelling room.

They were malnourished, dirty and all of them have been hospitalized, police said.

The victims were given food and drinks and Child Protective Services and Adult Protective Services will care for them once they are well enough to be released from hospital.
Police initially thought all of the victims were children but soon discovered seven were adults.

Mr and Mrs Turpin were arrested and charged with nine counts of torture and 10 of child endangerment. Neither of them have a serious criminal record.

The couple are being held at Robert Presley Detention Center east of Los Angeles and their bail has been set at $9million. They will appear in court on Thursday.

This was my first attempt- Libyan deportee arrested for robbery | Mr Olumide's Blog

Posted: 15 Jan 2018 04:25 AM PST

No fewer than 62 persons, including a Libyan deportee, Destiny Kelly, have been arrested by the Edo State Police Command for various criminal offences in the state.

The Commissioner of Police, Mr. Johnson Kokumo, who disclosed this to journalists, explained that the suspects were arrested between December, 2017 and January, 2018.

Kokumo stated that the police command recovered several items, including seven AK47 rifles, one pump-action gun, 34 cut-to-size guns, one toy gun, a machete and a face mask, from the suspected criminals.

He also said seven operational vehicles used by the suspects were recovered.

The Libyan deportee, Kelly, he said, was picked up by policemen on December 2, 2017, along with his accomplices, for allegedly abducting and robbing a female corps member.

The two accomplices were identified as Christopher Agbonugo, 29, and Endurance Aburimeh, 23.

Aburimeh confessed that the gang picked up their victim, one Joseph Jennifer, at Ramat Park, en route to Ring Road.

He explained that his gang member, Agbonugo, posed as a cab operator, while Kelly and himself (Aburimeh) pretended to be passengers.

He said as the car approached the Ikpoba slope area, the suspects tortured their victim and forced her to surrender her mobile phone, N4,000 cash and ATM card.

However, they were said to have run out of luck when the victim's phone was tracked by the police, leading to Christopher's arrest.

Narrating her ordeal, Jennifer said the hoodlums failed in their bid to empty her bank account as it had not been authorised for withdrawals.

She said, "I was coming from Uromi, so the bus driver dropped us at Ramat Park. I needed to take a taxi to Ring Road. As I was inside (the taxi) around Ikpoba slope, suddenly, I felt a shock and before I knew it, my head was between the legs of one of them.

"They started to hit me on the head. The more I begged, the more they hit me. So, I gave them my bag and everything. One of them went to the bank to collect money from my bank account but he could not collect money.
"They became angry and beat and tortured me in the car. Even I could not withdraw money from the account because the Federal Government just paid money into the account and had not opened it for my use."

Kelly, who said he was deported from Libya in February, 2017, claimed to have engaged in robbery only once.

"I spent about four years in Libya but I was deported. That robbery was my first attempt. We planned to collect her phone and we did," he added.

The Commissioner of Police, Kokumo, said the suspects specialised in robbing unsuspecting passengers and had confessed to the crime.

Kokumo said, "Through intelligence-led policing, they (suspects) were established as authors of the crime. They have also confessed.

"They had an Audi 80 car, as an operational vehicle. They pretended as if they were operators to unsuspecting commuters. They picked them up and rob them of their valuables."
