Things To Do To Achieve More Than New Year Resolutions

Posted: 12 Jan 2018 02:40 AM PST

We can plan and set goals but so much of who we are has already been decided. This frightens me now that I'm in my 40s.

How can I grow up to be more than the girl who loves to binge watch TV after her kids are in bed if I'm already grown up and this is still what I do?

My dad prays for me today from South Africa. He often calls me on his drive home. He could never be bothered to figure out the world of free apps that would have let him call me without cost. Instead, he just dials me direct from his cell phone.

Somehow it makes me feel so loved. Deep in my bones. Like nothing will get in the way of my dad calling when he wants to hear my voice. Certainly not technology. He calls me and tells me what he's learning. He'll be 70 this year and he's always learning. I press the phone tight against my ear because there's a delay and I don't want to miss it.

He tells me that what we really need is to – and now I can't remember his exact words, but the gist. The gist is that we need to get out of our own way. To get over ourselves. To want more than ourselves. To want to follow Jesus more than we want to follow ourselves.

This is a good word. I believe this.

But do I live it?

I don't make resolutions but I ask questions. They make me nervous now that I'm half way through with the business of living.

Am I getting out of my own way? Or am I so set in my ways I can't really even notice the difference?

My friend Janice leaves me a message to remind me of all that I'm releasing into the world this year. She says it over and over again – that beautiful word – releasing.

I play her message again. I don't want to forget to let go this year. To let go of what I can't fix or change and to let the things God is trying to fix and change in me be just that – released. Sometimes they look like books. But sometimes they look like lessons I learn between 10 and midnight by myself over a cup of coffee and coffee cake. (I know, I know, late night eating choices fail.)

But I want to release so many things. I want to let them fall off me and give them back to the only God I believe can actually carry them into the New Year. They've always been too heavy for me.

I want to trust that I won't miss it. That I won't miss what He's doing because I'm so busy catching up on the next episode. I'm selfishly short sighted.

I don't want to miss what He's doing in and through and for my husband and kids.

I don't want to miss that someone has a kidney stone or secret fear because I'm so busy not paying attention. Or paying attention to the wrong things.

I want to walk away from myself and leave as much of her back in the old year as possible.

This is a hard thing.

Sometimes I don't realize it's the right thing to do till I write it down.

So I'm slowly taking first steps into the new year and away from parts of myself. And toward parts of my life that it's easy to miss. To skim. To only catch glimpses of out of the corner of your eye.

I want to be one of those who knows she's listening and seeing when Jesus says, let those who have ears hear and those who have eyes see.

I am not making resolutions. But I am walking forward away from some things and toward others.

Facebook set to check business, media posts | Mr Olumide's Blog

Posted: 12 Jan 2018 02:10 AM PST

Facebook plans major changes to news feed from media and businesses to focus on personal interactions, which may lead to people spending less time on the website, its CEO said.

"As we roll  out, you'll see less public content like posts from businesses, brands, and media.
"The public content you see more will be held to the same standard — it should encourage meaningful interactions between people," Mark Zuckerberg wrote.

The chief executive said the Facebook community has complained of a hike in the numbers of public posts on the social network in the past two years, which has been "crowding out" the personal moments.

It would take months to introduce the changes, Zuckerberg said in the post, adding he expected people to spend less time on Facebook and some other types of engagement to go down.

The end result, he said, will likely be good for the business in the long term.(Sputik/NAN)

Steven Seagal accused of raping extra in 1994 | Mr Olumide's Blog

Posted: 12 Jan 2018 02:10 AM PST

An extra on Steven Seagal's 1994 "On Deadly Ground" claims the actor raped her during a wrap party.

Regina Simons, who was 18 at the time, told The Wrap that Seagal invited her to his Beverly Hills home in 1993 after production closed on the film, but she was the only person there.

"He took me into this room and then just closed the door and started kissing me," she said.

"He then took my clothes off and before I knew it he was on top of me, raping me … I wasn't sexually active yet. People always talk about fight-or-flight. But no one talks about the freeze."
Simons, now 43 and with two children, claims that she also met Seagal on the day of casting. When she complained of a headache, he offered her a massage.

The second time she met him was at the nonexistent party.

"I asked him where is everyone and he said that they had already left,"

She went on to say that she froze during the alleged rape, but cried during the entire experience.

"The only way I'm able to describe it is I literally felt like I left my body," she said.
"I think because of the situation I was completely caught off guard. Tears were coming down my face and I know that it hurt. He was three times my size."

2 Kidnappers Caught In Lagos While Escaping With Their Victim

Posted: 12 Jan 2018 02:10 AM PST

The Lagos State police command arrested two notorious kidnappers, yesterday, 10th of January, 2018, at about 9:43pm, at Elemoro, Ajah.

The criminals met their waterloo while escaping with their victim, one Mrs Mildred Mbajiorgu.

The tight security network emplaced in Lagos state by the Command Commissioner of Police, CP. Edgal Imohimi, did the magic as the Divisional Police Officer, Elemoro tapped into it to get the suspects arrested.

According to the DPO, SP Mohammed Shehu Limawa, he received a distress call from a lady who told him that she heard the voice of a woman crying for help in a dark blue Gulf 3 car.

She also gave the registration number of the car as KRD 845 EC. The DPO quickly alerted one of the Anti crime patrol teams along the route taken by the Kidnappers and instructed the policemen to slow down traffic to about 20km per hour.

The hoodlums ran into the gridlock and were arrested by the policemen who were in the waiting for them. The victim was rescued and taken to the hospital to treat the injury inflicted on her forehead by the dare devils using the butt of a locally made pistol.

Meanwhile the suspects - Igwe Sunday, 28, and Chukwuemeka Bright, 21 - together with the locally made pistol recovered from them has been handed over to operatives of the Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) for further investigation.

Dangote Is Africa’s Richest For Seventh Year

Posted: 12 Jan 2018 01:35 AM PST

For the seventh year in a row, the Chairman and Chief Executive of Dangote Industries Limited, Aliko Dangote, has been adjudged as the richest man in Africa with a net worth that Forbes pegged at $12.2bn for 2017. That was an increase of $100m from a year earlier.

Bill Gates maintained his position as the richest in the world with a net worth of $86bn, while Warren Buffet and Jeff Bezos were second and third, respectively with net worth of $75.6bn and $72.8bn.

Dangote is looking beyond cement
– his most valuable asset – and has been investing in a fertiliser production company and a large oil refinery. Dangote Fertiliser is expected to start operations in the second quarter of this year," Forbes stated.

Dangote was recently the only African selected among Bloomberg's world 50 best persons in the year 2017.

While the names of notable Nigerians were dropped from the billionaires' list, Globacom Chairman, Mike Adenuga, with a net worth of $5.8bn, was adjudged the fifth richest man in Africa and Folorunsho Alakija, also a Nigerian, whose estimated $1.6bn fortune is in oil exploration, was adjudged as the 15th richest person on the continent.

Number two on the list of Africa's richest people is diamond mining heir, Nicky Oppenheimer of South Africa, with a net worth of $7.7bn, up $700m from last year. Oppenheimer is one of eight South Africans on the list, making it the country with the most billionaires in Africa. Nigeria has three.

In 2016, South Africa and Egypt tied with six billionaires each. Boosting the South African ranks in the latest ranking is a newcomer, Michiel Le Roux, the founder and former chairman of Johannesburg-listed Capitec Bank Holdings, whose stock has climbed more than 50 per cent in the past year, making him worth $1.2bn.

South African mining tycoon, Desmond Sacco, chairman of the Assore Group, returns to the list following a stock price surge of some 60 per cent in the past 12 months. Sacco last appeared as a billionaire on the Africa's richest list in 2012 with a $1.4bn fortune.

Zimbabwe gets its first billionaire in 2017 as telecom magnate, Strive Masiyiwa, who chairs the Econet Group, got on the list. Shares of Zimbabwe-listed mobile phone network Econet Wireless Zimbabwe have surged in value over the past year; Masiyiwa owns more than half of that company. He also has a majority stake in fibre optic firm, Liquid Telecom, which raised $700m in a bond offering in July 2017. Forbes estimates Masiyiwa's net worth at $1.7bn.

The Punch reports that two of the 23 listed African billionaires are women, unchanged from 2016. Isabel dos Santos, the daughter of Angola's former President, Jose Santos, is worth an estimated $2.7bn, down from $3.2bn in 2016, according to Forbes. Her net worth dropped in part due to a lower value for Banco BCI, as its book value plunged in 2016 amid a tough year for the oil- producing country.

Trump says Nigerians, other immigrants from ‘shithole’ | Mr Olumide's Blog

Posted: 12 Jan 2018 01:15 AM PST

US President Donald Trump has very zero regard for immigrants from Nigeria and other countries as he described them as people coming from "shithole".

It is the latest profanity to be mouthed by the American leader about foreigners.

The last one reported, which his spin doctors denied, was that he described Haitians as people infected with AIDS and Nigerians as people living in huts.

The latest comments, first reported by The Washington Post, sparked anger among Democrats and Republicans and revived questions about Trump's tendency to make racially charged remarks.

Trump sat down with senators and congressmen at the White House to discuss a proposed bipartisan deal that would limit immigrants from bringing family members into the country, and restrict the green card visa lottery in exchange for shielding hundreds of thousands of young immigrants from deportation.

"Why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here?" Trump said, according to people briefed on the meeting who spoke with The Washington Post.

The New York Times later reported the same comment, citing unidentified people with direct knowledge of the meeting.

The president was referring to African countries and Haiti, both newspapers said, with the Post including El Salvador on its list.

Trump then suggested the United States should welcome immigrants from places like Norway, whose prime minister met with Trump on Wednesday.

"Why do we need more Haitians?" he added, according to the Post account. "Take them out."

Republican Senator Lindsey Graham and Democratic Senator Dick Durbin came to the White House to outline their bipartisan compromise, but found themselves in the room with several Republican immigration hardliners.

Graham and Durbin are leading efforts to codify protections for so-called "dreamers", immigrants who came to the United States illegally as children.

In exchange, the deal would end extended family "chain migration".

It also reportedly would cut the visa lottery programme by half and prioritise certain countries in the system, instead of scrapping it altogether as several Republicans have suggested as part of an agreement.

The president and lawmakers are in the midst of intense negotiations about how to shield nearly 800,000 "dreamers" from deportation.

SCARY! Police Inspector’s Head Found In Cross River Shrine

Posted: 12 Jan 2018 01:00 AM PST

The Cross River State Police Command on Thursday paraded a 54-year-old man, Valentine Ebani, for being in possession of the decomposed head of a police inspector, Michael James, who was recently killed in Uyanga, in the Akamkpa Local Government Area of the state.

Ebani, who was identified as the chief priest and village head of Uyanga, was arrested along with seven others who were suspected to have killed the inspector and taken his head to the village shrine.

James was killed and beheaded in Uyanga on December 25, 2017 during a communal clash between Uyanga and neighbouring Ojor, both in the Akamkpa LGA.

The communities, according to Punch, had in recent times been involved in violent communal clashes that had claimed the lives of several persons, while property worth millions of naira was destroyed.

James, who was attached to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad in Enugu, had taken his family on a visit to his in-laws at Ojor village when he was beheaded by rioting youths in Uyanga.

The state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Hafiz Inuwa, said the late policeman had visited his in-law, ASP Dominic Umoh, in Ojor village when the incident happened.

"While buying fuel, Uyanga youths, without provocation, attacked, killed and beheaded him. His corpse has yet to be found. However, his severed head has been recovered at Uyanga shrine.

"The youths also seized the late inspector's AK-47 rifle, with double magazines and set ablaze his Toyota Sienna, with number plate, ENU 683 NK," he said.

Inuwa said police investigation led to the arrest of Isaac Akpan, Benjamin Abakum, Patrick Edet and Famous Archibong.

Other suspects are Effiong Odu, Ndifon Arong and Wisdom Inok.

The police boss said items recovered from the suspects included one locally-made pistol, 17 empty cartridges, underwear of the deceased and one human skull.

The commissioner also said the command arrested no fewer than 529 suspected criminals during the festive period.

Day of disgrace! Denrele Edun narrates how he was disgraced on his matric day | Mr Olumide's Blog

Posted: 12 Jan 2018 12:55 AM PST

Media personality ,Denrele Edun took his fans back to 1998 when he had his matriculation.
He wrote
Throwback to my Matriculation Day in Unilag. 1998. Day of Glory that became a Day of Disgrace!

Back Home (then), we had this little-black-and-white-brandless-TV that never showed steady pictures...We always had to slap it hard for it to show properly and each heavy slap only held vice for bout 20mins! I was always exasperated with it!
One Sunday, I rubbed anointing oil on it and Alleluia, the "skoin-skoin" of this toolbox-sized TV ceased and it was perfect picture all day (only on that Sunday)! Then & there, I saw a promo for an audition: New young actors and actresses wanted for the most popular family series back then. (D Executive Producer is late now, Heaven bless her soul!). I was FRIGGING EXCITED. Jotted down d address, went d next day (Monday) to their office in Ikeja, paid 2k for d form & got the Audition dates.

The actual auditioning date was the same day as my Matric. Even before the Matric, I posed with a makeshift gown (cos I couldn't afford one) & raced to Ikeja in my very best ensemble (My Dad's checkered shirt, my best denim pants, borrowed shades and my Yaba-Aba-made trainers that always smelt so bad after I took them off).
I was at the auditioning ground from 10am thru till 7pm waiting for my turn. I honestly didn't mind the long wait...I wanted to be on the show so bad cos I needed the cash, exposure and of course, work. My turn and I went in with all d confidence in d world.
They called in 10 of us & when it was time to act, I nailed it. However, there was an Actor on the panel (very popular at that time) who was eyeing me in disdain. He suddenly started throwing questions at me, perhaps in a bid to make me look stupid or throw me off but i was damn ready for him.
He looked me squarely in the eye and told me, I recall this too well; "YOU WILL NEVER MAKE IT IN THIS INDUSTRY. YOU ARE TALENTLESS AND JUST WASTED OUR TIME. YOU WANT US TO PUT U ONSCREEN? SUCH A DISGRACE". I thought he was reading from d script. Next thing, I was walked out with the others.
D other guys tried consoling me but I left shattered. Trekked from Ikeja to Yaba. Cried all The way home.

U know my name, not my story.
U've heard what I've done, but not what I'v been thru!

Fayose Says Buhari Is An Unrepentant Ethnic Champion For Appointing New NIA DG From North

Posted: 12 Jan 2018 12:05 AM PST

Ekiti State governor and chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors Forum, Ayo Fayose has described President Muhammadu Buhari as an unrepentant ethnic champion.

He sacked two people - one from the North (Babachir Lawal) and one from the South (Ayo Oke) - but replaced both of them with people from the North. Is this fair?

In a statement released by Lere Olayinka, the Ekiti State Governor's Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Governor Ayodele Fayose, has faulted President Muhammadu Buhari's appointment of Ahmed Abubakar as the new director-general of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA).

Abubakar was appointed as a replacement for Ayo Oke, former head of the intelligence agency, who was sacked on 30 October 2017, following the controversies trailing $43.5m found in an apartment in Ikoyi, Lagos.

In reaction, the outspoken PDP politician said that forefathers of Nigeria must be lamenting were thet might be after seeing "what Buhari has turned the country into".

Governor Fayose said while Lawal was replaced by Boss Mustapha, from Lawal's Adamawa hometown, Buhari failed to pick Oke's replacement from his state, and described Abubakar's appointment as evidence that Buhari is an "unrepentant sectional leader, who does not care about the feelings of people from other parts of the country".

He said; "Seeing what President Buhari has turned the country to, the forefathers of Nigeria, who laid the foundation of the country on equity, justice and fairness will be lamenting wherever they are now," Fayose said.

"President Buhari has consistently demonstrated that he is an ethnic champion, a religious bigot and the number one promoter of disunity in Nigeria. This he has done again with the appointment of yet another northerner as the NIA director-general.

"Ambassador Ayo Oke was removed from office the same day Babachir Lawal was removed as secretary to the government of the federation.

"While Lawal's replacement came from his home state, Oke's replacement came from the north. That is unacceptable."

Fayose asked if there was no one from the south qualified to head the agency, adding that given Abubakar's appointment, "all" of the country's security chiefs are northerners.

"With the appointment of Ahmed Rufai Abubakar as the NIA Director General, all heads of security agencies are now northerners and the question is, is this what those who enshrined federal character in our constitution envisaged?" Fayose asked.

"The implication of what the president has done is that, when security council meeting is held today, apart from one or two insignificant people, those in the meeting will be people from one section of the country.

"Even para-military agencies are headed by people from President Buhari's section of the country. This is unfair.

"Those who argued then that the president made the appointments on merit should come to the open to tell Nigerians, especially those from the south that there is no one that merited appointment as Director General of NIA."

Benue attacks: Livestock guard loses 4 wives, 18 children | Mr Olumide's Blog

Posted: 11 Jan 2018 12:25 PM PST

Mr Akpenheen Amile, a Livestock Guard, who is being treated of gunshots sustained in the Jan. 2 attack on villages in Guma, Benue State, says he is yet to establish contact with his four wives and 18 children.

"I am in physical pains from gunshot injuries, but such pains don't hurt me like the inability to ascertain the fate of my four wives and 18 children," Amile told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Makurdi.

NAN reports that five villages in Guma and Logo Local Governments were attacked by unknown gunmen on Jan. 1 and 2.

According to the Benue State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), 73 people have so far been confirmed killed by the invaders.

Amile, who is married to five wives, told NAN that only his fifth wife was with him.

The livestock guard, who is being treated at the Benue State Teaching Hospital (BSUTH), said that he was shot on one of his legs.

"I am physically in pains, but I am more worried about the psychological pains caused by the disconnection with my family.
"As it is, I don't know whether they are among the dead or they have fled to some unknown destination for safety," he said.

Amile, who claimed that the attackers were dressed in herdsmen attire, said that they arrived "around 5 p.m. and started shooting anyone on sight".

Speaking through an interpreter, Amile said that he was with other Livestock Guards employed by the Benue Government to enforce the anti-open grazing law, when the gunmen descended on them.

"We were at our camp at a primary school at Iwer, in Guma, when the gunmen surrounded us and started shooting.
"It was while I was running for safety that I was shot on the leg. We had to flee because we were not armed. Besides, we were taken by surprise.
"They killed many Livestock Guards and many of us were wounded.
"Since the attack, I have not heard from my four wives and 18 children. Only my fifth wife is here with me. This is causing me sleepless nights; the situation is unbearable," he said.

Six Nigerian-owned guest houses burnt in S/Africa | Mr Olumide's Blog

Posted: 11 Jan 2018 12:25 PM PST

The Nigerian Union in South Africa say six guest houses owned by their members were burnt during attacks against Nigerians in Rustenburg, North West Province of South Africa.

Mr Paul Nwanedo, chairman of the union in the Province, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on the telephone from Rustenburg, on Thursday that the attackers beat a woman and her child.

" These attacks began on Sunday. Four Nigerians are in critical condition in the hospital. We also received a report that the Taxi drivers also beat a Nigerian woman and her child.
" We can also confirm that six guest houses belonging to our people were burnt by the drivers.

" We have not recorded any incident today. We have advised our people to remain indoors and ensure their safety.
" As we speak, stakeholders comprising the police, taxi drivers and senior government officials are still in a meeting. The union was not allowed to be part of the meeting," Nwanedo said.

The chairman said that the union was still taking stock of losses by Nigerians and would communicate to appropriate Federal government representatives in South Africa.

NAN learned that the taxi drivers went on the rampage following allegations that Nigerians sold drugs to a gang that attacked their members.

They also alleged that a Nigerian abducted and raped a 16-year-old South African girl.

Nwando said the allegations were false and spurious.
" Our investigation so far showed that these allegations are false. No Nigerian has been arrested for alleged abduction or rape. The allegation of drugs selling to the gang is also untrue," he said.

"The #MeToo movement. Women speaking out about sexual assault," she said,
