I Stayed Alone For Four Years To Avoid Distractions — Best Graduating Student

Posted: 25 Nov 2017 03:04 AM PST

Ibraheem Kabir Adeyemi, a graduate of Computer Science from Oduduwa University, Osun State, emerged the best graduating student at the 5th convocation ceremony of the university recently. 20-year-old Adeyemi, who claimed to have lived a "triangular lifestyle" in his days at the university, spoke to The Nation's Gbenga Aderanti about the secrets of his academic success, among other issues.

You emerged the best graduating student of Oduduwa University. What was your CPGA?
I graduated with a CGPA of 4.94.

Why did you choose Oduduwa University?
I chose Oduduwa University because I could see the potential in the school. Being a relatively young university, the kind of structures which the school management had been able to put together in such a short period of time, really impressed me. I also had a family friend who graduated from there, and he really convinced me that the standard of teaching was excellent. He got a scholarship to study in the UK after he finished.

How many times did you sit for university entrance exam before you got admission into OUI?
I sat for the Joint Matriculation Examination (UME) once before I got admission into OUI, though OUI was not my first choice.

How was the experience waiting for admission?
Waiting for admission was a real turning point for me. That was the point I realised that in life, you can only depend on yourself for support, and you will only get what you work hard for in life. I was really anxious during that period, but I thank God everything worked out for the better.

At what point did you decide to apply for admission into OUI?
I decided to apply to OUI as my backup school in case my first choice school did not work out. Though I was picked in my first choice school, I was not given the course I wanted. OUI gave me the chance to achieve my dreams and took it.

What were the reactions of your parents when you told them you were going to study at OUI?
My parents were really supportive of my choice. They understood that it was what I wanted. I had to convince some of my siblings, because I come from a very big family and my parents always encouraged us to share ideas with each other.

What was your preferred course and why?
My preferred course is Computer Science because I have always had a flare for computing as a kid. I always had interest in how this device has been able to revolutionise the world as we know it. Growing up, my uncle had a cyber cafe where I would go every weekend. He would allow me to surf the web, play games and solve problems online. I guess that is where I first developed my love for computing.

What were your experiences at the university?
My experiences in Oduduwa University were really memorable. I had lot of good experiences in the school. I guess my best experience was going to check my result at the end of each semester. Most of the time, I knew I was going to have all As, so it was self gratifying for me because I believed that all my hard work for the semester had not been in vain.

I guess my worst experience was in my third year. I lost one of my very close friends. It was a really tough period because i didn't have a lot of friends. So, losing one of them really made me sad.

How did you manage to come tops in the school, considering the distractions one faces as an undergraduate?
When I resumed in my first year, I had my mind set on being the best that I could be. I made up my mind that what was important was my studies only, and I was not going to allow anything hinder me from achieving my goals, no matter what. I had friends, but I have always been blessed with the ability to see through people.

I always knew when someone was a good influence or not, and I thank God for the few friends I had in school. My resolute rectangular life (class, hostel, mosque and library) kept me away from all forms of distractions. I always stayed alone throughout my four years, because I enjoyed my privacy a lot.

At what point did you resolve that you were going to be the best graduating student?
That would be in my third year. I met this lecturer who took a real interest in me. He made me to realise that although I was a really brilliant student, being brilliant is not enough to achieve success in life. There is a difference between being able to excel in academics and being able to excel in life. He explained to me what it takes to be a computer scientist and the need to excel in whatever I lay my hands on.

How did you achieve this feat?
Hard work, God's favour and determination really helped in achieving my goals. I also gained a lot from tutoring other students, because this helped me in refreshing the things I had read a long time ago and also made me recognise the aspects I needed to improve on.

Tell me the challenges you faced as an undergraduate of OUI?
I faced a lot of challenges as an undergraduate, but with God's help and grace, I was able to overcome them. One of the most important was changing the general cliche that smart people are not sociable. I engaged in other projects apart from academic work and picked up other hobbies apart from reading. I thank God I was able to balance them all.

What were the factors that helped you to come tops?
I would say the major factor was being resolute. I was extremely determined to achieve my objectives, no matter what, and this helped me a lot in achieving my goal.

Do you have any plan to lecture in the school, considering the fact that the institution is willing to absorb its best students?
If given the chance to, I would like to impact knowledge and I would also like to apply my skills in the emerging start-up sphere in Nigeria in order to make our country a better place. I have a secret passion in helping others achieve their goals. That is why my friend and I are launching an online tutoring platform where students can meet capable tutors in various skills they have interest in, such as programming, academics and the likes.

What is that thing about OUI that you are not going to forget in a hurry?
It has to be the lecturers. I met lecturers who changed my orientation and made me think differently every day. The mosque too. It was always my safe haven; always very quiet and serene.

How easy was it for your parents to pay your school fees?
My father is a businessman and my mum is a retired teacher. My parents are the most remarkable people even though they don't have much. They are willing to do anything for their children so far as it is for their education. it was not easy but they always found a way. I thank God for them.

Was there a time you felt like quitting the institution?
Not really. My understanding of education as a whole changed a lot when I went for internship. I realised that especially in the field of IT, most of the skills you require are in the outside world; they are not taught in the classroom. Even people who are not IT majors can pick up those skills and become more relevant. I realised that I had to be focused on academics and also learn relevant skills like programming and the likes in order to be relevant in the industry.

What is your plan for the future?
I would like to be successful.

Shocking Revelations About Man Arrested For Hypnotising & Using Students

Posted: 25 Nov 2017 02:04 AM PST

The arrest of 'pastor' Abraham Roland, who ran a cult-like fellowship that started as a tutorial centre for admission seekers and students, has turned up some startling revelations.

The revelations were made by his right hand man, David Ogbonnaya, who worked closely with him for over 10 years.

The unmarried Roland ran his circle of followers made up of only young men and women, allegedly brainwashing them and cutting them off from their families and friends.
Investigations into the inner workings of the group run by Roland, an Edo State indigene revealed that the self-professed pastor turned his tiny community of followers into both domestic and s*x slaves.

Ogbonnaya, who once got an admission to the University of Lagos, dropped out after being told by Roland that with Holy Spirit, he did not need to go to school.

He told Punch that he served his boss faithfully to the point where he said he would have committed murder without thinking twice while he was under the suspect's control.

Who is Abraham Roland? It was learnt that Roland is from from Okpela area of Edo State. He was said to have attended secondary school at Kosofe College, Lagos.

Findings by Punch showed that he gained admission into UNILAG twice and dropped out both times. He was said to have gained admission to study at the Lagos State Polytechnic and again dropped out.

But Roland allegedly told his followers to shun education.

Ogbonnaya said, "I gained admission along with three other members – Tosin and Busayo (now in rehab), and one Ifemosun Tosin – at the University of Lagos the same year. He started by asking us to bring our school fees to him. He later asked us to drop out.

"He always preached against western education. I think he knows that books would make us wise. He told us that once we had the Holy Spirit, we did not need education.

"He started a programme with a slogan 'Child of God, what are you doing in human academic institution.' The aim was to discourage as many people as possible from being educated.

"He told us to stay away from reading books and never to listen to any other pastor. He said Pastor Sam Adeyemi of Daystar, Bishop David Oyedepo and Pastor Enoch Adeboye were his 'children' because God had given him the task of taking over the world."

How Roland started his cult-like group It was learnt that he established his tutorial centre called Sound Mind for admission seekers in 2003 and later started Sound Mind Students' Fellowship, which drew membership among university undergraduates in the neighbourhood.

According to Ogbonnaya, Roland decided to end the tutorial section to focus on just the fellowship.

He said, "I was this young man who just wanted help to get education and ended up dropping out and becoming the leader of his fellowship.

"One of the other leaders of the fellowship is a lady called Abi. She is now in rehabilitation after being liberated. She is recovering very fast.

"The man (Roland) slept with all the ladies at the centre. There was a time he took me along when a girl asked him the reason why he was sleeping with all the other girls in the camp.

"He took me along because he trusted me so much. He knew I would never believe what the girl was saying. The idea was to meet the girl and silence her before she exposed the matter."

Ogbonnaya said while the lady in question challenged Roland for sleeping with the other female members of the group, his loyalty clouded his sense of reasoning.

He said that he was not concerned about knowing the truth about his boss.

Ogbonnaya said, "After the incident, he called me and said he needed to explain some things about what I witnessed.

"He told me that the girl was challenging him out of jealousy. He said he was sleeping with her and that it was the lady who requested for it.

"He claimed that she once told him that she was ho-rny and that because he did not want her to go out and sin, he decided to help her by 'relieving' her with s*x."

Ogbonnaya said he later went to meet the young woman to challenge her about her action towards his boss.

He said the revelation the girl made shocked him.

Ogbonnaya told Punch that it turned out that Roland had been having anal sex with the young ladies in the camp.

He said, "The lady told me that her female counterparts in the group were complaining that the anal s*x he practised was affecting their anuses. They were having sores all the time.

"She caught them discussing about the pain in their anuses. That was why she decided to confront him. He forced some of the girls to kiss him and perform oral s*x on him. But it got to a point that many of the ladies did it willingly. Only few had to be forced to do it."

He explained that despite the consistent anal s*x, the young ladies could not run away because he allegedly enslaved them mentally.

According to Ogbonnaya, despite the revelation from Abi, he was still loyal to Roland to the point that if he had instructed him to kill the young lady in order to silence her, he would have done it without question.

"There were times he asked me to beat people up or slap them. He once asked me to slap some ladies very hard because they were depressed over the way he was having s*x with them all the time.

"He was trying to bring them out of their depression and said the slap was the best way. That is why he took me along to anywhere he went to."

Ogbonnaya said every member of the group was taught to interpret everything they see spiritually even when the truth was staring them in the face.

"He told us not to ever try to process things in our head but to view everything spiritually. He also told each person to watch the other to prevent us from ganging up against him."

The brainwashing Ogbonnaya explained that Roland had mastered the art of brainwashing people.

According to him, on a daily basis, they prayed for at least six hours, speaking in tongues alone.

"He told us that we should only pray in tongues and think of what we want in our minds.

"By the time the prayer was over, we would be so convinced of whatever he told us. We called ourselves 'rebels'.

"If he had handed us weapons to go and kill, we would have done so without question..."

It was learnt that Roland reportedly held his followers captive with his preaching.

Ogbonnaya explained that he would deliver a long mind-bending sermon that would twist their thinking.

He said, "He could talk about how Ruth followed Naomi despite the fact that the latter had nothing for about six hours. Then, he would give us a break of one hour to meditate on what he said. After that, he would say, 'You people can leave me alone. I am not forcing you to follow me. That reinforced our loyalty to him the more.

"He brainwashed us by first telling us things that we could easily believe, he then moved to the stage of telling us that we needed to go deeper in our faith. He said going deep in faith comes with responsibilities and to join him in ruling the world like God had promised him, we must be willing to make sacrifices.

"He said he was the one who would present the world to God and that anybody who did not believe in him would perish."

Feeding the boss through street begging
Roland's followers became so loyal to him to the point of not just servicing his s*xual appetite but also begging for alms on the street to feed him, it was learnt.

His followers, both male and female would dress up 'corporately' and beg for money at the Adedoyin Street, Kosofe, Lagos, where he was based before relocating due to inability to pay rent.

Ogbonnaya said, "On Adedoyin Street in Kosofe, we are very popular as Roland's followers who would wear suit and beg people around there for money.

"If you go to the Redeemed Camp at Mowe and ask at Shiloh Apartment, they would tell you how we lodged there and ran away with their money. If you go to Tantalizers at the Redeemed camp too, they would tell you how we went there to beg for food. We once ate there and had to submit our phones as collateral when we could not pay.

"He collected all the money we had. He would say he was giving us an opportunity to use our faith. He said if we had money, we would not be able to use our faith."

According to Ogbonnaya, Roland frequently billed his followers various sums of money like N2,000, N3,000.

According to him, he might tell them to go get him pepper soup and yoghurt by any means and they would be forced to go into the street to beg for money.

He said, "Sometimes, he could say there was need to rent a hall and he would order us to go and find the money anyway we could. He turned us to slaves and beggars.

"Sometimes, he would send a message to all of us. It would read: '6am, 25c, N3,000'. That was an instruction for each of us to get N3,000 each to him by 6am the following day. He was living at Block 25c at the Redeemed Camp along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway at the time because he could not afford a proper apartment.

"We would all start looking for N3,000 each. We would call our parents, families and friends and lie to them just to be able to get the money.

"Sometimes when we got the amount demanded, we would have nothing left for transport. We would have to board public transport and beg the conductor to give us free rides or passengers to pay for us.

"At other times, we trekked long distances just to get the money to him. If you did not get the money, he would make you feel so bad that you would feel like committing suicide.

"He told us whatever we did in the name of Jesus was right and he always had copious quotes from the scripture to back himself up."

Ogbonnaya also revealed that Roland told each of his members to stop counting their ages.

He added that he had so brainwashed his female followers that they all believed they were going to marry him.

He also told Punch that each of the man's followers took various forms of oaths.

He recounted a strange incident when Roland demanded the "lights" of each male member.

Ogbonnaya said, "We did this by making a gesture of taking something from our heart and putting it in a cup. Each of us who were men repeated the action. He then drank from the cup."

Freedom for Ogbonnaya
Finally, late in 2016, Ogbonnaya broke free from a decade of subservience to Roland.

According to him, he started having doubts when he realised that he was suffering deeply.

According to him, he hardly got food to eat while he could do anything to give money to his boss.

He said he just ran away from where Roland housed them in a remote part of Mowe.

But he said few weeks after he left, he went back to Roland crying and begging for the pastor to take him back.

"I was still under his influence. It was after that that I realised I was in serious bondage and I had to find a way to report to the security agencies what we were going through," Ogbonnaya said.

Some of the young women liberated from Roland's camp are still in rehabilitation.

The Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Lagos Command, Mr. Tajudeen Balogun whose men raided the camp, said Roland had been handed over to the National Agency for Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons and other related offences.

Zonal Commander of NAPTIP, Mr. Joseph Famakin, said investigation was still ongoing on the extent of Roland's crime.

Lekki Big Boy, Akpaikpe, Nabbed For "Internet Fraud"

Posted: 25 Nov 2017 01:59 AM PST

The EFCC has arraigned a suspected Internet fraudster, Akpaikpe Etim, before Justice J.E. Oyefeso of the Lagos State High Court sitting in Ikeja, Lagos on an eight-count charge bordering on possession of fraudulent documents and obtaining money by false pretence.

Akpaikpe, 30, who is said to be a member of a syndicate of fraudsters operating in the Lekki area of Lagos, among other alleged offences, obtained the sum of $4,000 USD from a victim in Singapore, after posting a dog for sale on an online platform.

An investigation also revealed that the suspect, who does not have a stable job, had several inflows of money into his account, which he could not satisfactorily account for.

The suspect pleaded not guilty when the charge was read to him.In view of his pleas, the prosecution counsel, Banjo James, asked for a trial date and prayed the court to remand the suspect in prison.

In his response, counsel to the defence, O.V. Adoro, urged the court to grant his client bail. However, the prosecution counsel opposed the bail application.

Consequently, Justice Oyefeso ordered the suspect to be remanded in Kirikiri Prisons and adjourned the case to February 18, 2018, for a hearing of bail application.

Girl Colludes With Boyfriend, ‘Kidnaps’ Self To Extort N500k

Posted: 25 Nov 2017 01:44 AM PST

The Anti-kidnapping Unit of Imo Police Command has arrested a 17-year-old girl, Favour Vincent, who allegedly colluded with her boyfriend, Emeka Godwin, a soldier, to plan her own kidnap.

The police also arrested Favour's immediate elder sister, Perpetua (19), alongside three other suspects – Amarach Victor (22), HygeniusOfoegbu (31), and Vitalis Opara (24).

They were paraded at the police command headquarters in Owerri by the PRO, Andrew Enwerem.

He explained that while the five suspects were rounded up by the operatives of the command, the army officer who received the ransom had yet to be arrested.

The police spokesperson said, "Miss Favour Vincent, and his boyfriend (Godwin) conspired to fake her kidnap with the intent to collect a ransom of N5m from her Togolese grandmother.

The suspects eventually collected N500,000 as ransom which was received by the purported boyfriend army officer. He immediately fled with the money.

The command on receiving the news of the kidnap, made efforts to rescue the victim and arrested the suspects."

Enwerem said that in the course of investigations, it was discovered that Favour and her elder sister, with the aid of the other suspects, planned, executed the kidnapping and successfully collected the ransom.

"The girl confessed to the crime and the command is on the trail of the purported army officer. Investigation is ongoing with a view to charging them to court.

The state commissioner of police, Chris Ezike, has equally charged the anti-kidnapping unit of the command to ensure that Godwin is arrested immediately.

Favour opened up that she planned her kidnap in order to get money from her grandmother whom she accused of neglecting her and her siblings.

She said, "Our grandmother is very rich but she doesn't take care of us. She gives money to outsiders but she refuses to give to us.

"My sister and I along with Emeka (Godwin) planned the kidnap. It was my boyfriend who received the N500,000. After he collected the money. He ran away and his phone line no longer went through."

The suspect resides in Majoji Village in Mai'adua Local Government Area of Katsina State.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Katsina State Commissioner of Police, Mr Bensen Gwana, paraded the suspect before newsmen on Friday in Katsina.

"The suspect allegedly poisoned the baby through giving him drinking water.

"The mother of the baby suspected foul-play and took the baby to the Mai'adua Hospital and later Daura General Hospital where it was confirmed that the boy was poisoned.
"The baby died at the Daura General Hospital when medical experts failed to stop the continuous watery stooling and vomiting," the police boss said.

Detained Saudi princes reportedly tortured | Mr Olumide's Blog

Posted: 25 Nov 2017 01:38 AM PST

Reports said detained Saudi princes and billionaires are being strung up by their feet and beaten by American private security contractors.

About 201 people are being detained at the Ritz-Carlton in Riyadh on the orders of the Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's anti corruption committee.

The group of detainees reportedly includes military officials and government ministers as well as 11 princes — among them Prince Alwaleed bin Talal whose $US10 billion fortune makes him the 10th richest man on the planet.

Construction tycoon Bakr Bin Laden, billionaire Saleh Kamal and Waleed al-Ibrahim, owner of the influential Arab satellite network MBC, are also believed to be in detention at the hotel.

A source reportedly told the Daily Mail that the group has since been subjected to "interrogations" carried out by "American mercenaries" brought in to work for the Crown Prince, 32, who is now the kingdom's most powerful figure.

"They are beating them, torturing them, slapping them, insulting them. They want to break them down," the source told the site.

The Daily Mail alleged 'Blackwater' was the security firm involved. But the organisation's successor, Academi, strongly denied even being in Saudi Arabia and said it does not engage in torture, which is illegal for US citizens to commit anywhere in the world.

"We do not provide security services in KSA (Kingdom of Saudi Arabia), we have no contact or connection with any government official or private party regarding this allegation," the company said.

Investigators said at least $100 billion has been uncovered in the corruption probe. The detainees include Cabinet ministers, members of the royal family and the owners of three TV networks that are among the largest in the Middle East.

The crackdown that began on November 4, initially targeted 11 princes, 38 officials, military officers as well as business leaders. An estimated 1700 individual bank accounts have been frozen.

Ogun DPO locks up rape victim | Mr Olumide's Blog

Posted: 25 Nov 2017 12:58 AM PST

Sixteen-year-old Doreen ,a quiet secondary school year two student, was languishing behind the counter of the Ajuwon Police Division, in Akute, a border community between Ogun and Lagos states.

The divisional officer ordered the girl to be locked up for stealing a piece of meat despite the fact that she had told the police how her caretaker, a Benin, Edo State indigene, Samuel Esosa Ehis, had allegedly raped her.

Saturday PUNCH learnt that Doreen (not real name) whose parents live in Mushin, Lagos was taken in by 40-year-old Ehis as a home help in November 2016.

Her parents said Ehis promised them he would enrol Doreen in school and in return, she would live with him and his wife and help out with domestic chores.

Doreen was never enrolled in any school since that November until September 2017, Saturday PUNCH learnt.

Asked why they did not take her away from Ehis' house since the school enrolment agreement was not fulfilled for more than 10 months, Doreen's parents said they had hoped Ehis would fulfil his promise.

He eventually did during the resumption of a new school session in September.

Doreen alleged that over the last 10 months she lived with Ehis and his wife, a banker and their two toddlers, the man had "told me to pull my skirt many times than I can remember."

According to her, most of the time, the man allegedly came to the room she shared with his children and pulled her skirt while she slept in the dark.

"When I say 'who is that?' he would pretend to be doing something else. This happened so many times, whether his wife was at home or not. When his wife was not at home, he would tell me to remove my skirt and I would say no," the girl said.

She shared this with a neighbour, who confirmed the girl's story.

"I told her that anytime the man did something like that again, she should scream so that he would not be able to deny it," the neighbour said.

But on Friday, October 27, Doreen said she was cornered by Ehis at about 5pm when she returned from school.

The girl stated,
"While I was going to school that morning, he said I should pull down my skirt and I said he should please leave me alone because I was late for school.
"When I got back from school in the evening, his wife was not around, he grabbed me and pulled down my skirt and pants. I told him that my mother would not like what he was doing and he said my mother would not know since she was not there," she said.
According to Doreen, when Ehis was done with her, she had to run off to the house of the neighbour, whom she had initially reported the previous attempts to.

In the house of the neighbour where Doreen sought refuge, the girl was given a phone to call her mother and report everything that had happened.

Her mother told our correspondent, "
She was crying when she called. She said that the man she was living with raped her and I screamed. I had to quickly inform her father who went to Akute immediately," she said.

Doreen's father said when he got to Akute, Ehis expressed surprise at seeing him and even asked why he had visited.

The angry father then accused him of raping his daughter but he denied it. His wife also denied that her husband could have raped the girl and corroborated her husband's meat theft accusation.

Ehis' wife then suggested they take the girl to a private hospital they patronise to get her tested but a doctor, who refused to carry out the test, referred them to a general hospital.

Saturday PUNCH learnt that the hospital refused to carry out the test without a police referral. Because it was late, Doreen's father took her home but returned the following day to report the matter at the Ajuwon Police Division.

The girl's father said he got to the station on Saturday to realise that Ehis had earlier reported there that the girl living with him stole a piece of meat but accused him of raping her when she was punished for it.

"When I got there to report that my daughter was raped, the police turned the case upside down. They said my daughter was a liar. The DPO said since the man (Ehis) reported first, they should first of all lock my daughter behind the counter, since the accusation of stealing meat, which was made against her, was a crime," Doreen's father said.

The police later resolved to get the girl tested. So they told the father to go and look for money for transport and for the test.

"We had no money. To get to Ajuwon was even hard because of money. We told them that we had to go back to Mushin to look for money. By the time we got the money, it was late and Mirabel where we were told to take my daughter to, had already closed. But we saw a notice on the door that they would open the following day, which was Sunday," Doreen's mother said.

According to her, the policewoman who followed them there said there was no point coming back the following day that despite the notice, it was not likely that officials would be there.

"Somebody now advised us that if it was too late, the evidence of the rape might have been washed off and that we should try and go back to Mirabel on Sunday. The following day, without informing the police, we took Doreen to Mirabel where they confirmed to us that she had been raped," the girl's mother said.

Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Ilyasu Ahmed
Officials at Mirabel told the girl's parents that the official report could only be delivered to the police and so, they needed a police request.

Doreen's mother said,
"When we got to the station and they heard that we had taken her for the test, they heaped abuses on us. They called my husband foolish and idiotic for insisting on going back for the treatment.
"The DPO joined in the abuses. He said my daughter was not a virgin and that she was already 'selling' herself. He said he was no longer interested in the case and that they should push all of us to the state CID (Ogun State Police Command's Criminal Investigative Department at Eleweran, Abeokuta)."

However, the DPO asked two of his men to go to Ehis' house to pick him up but by the time they got there, he had allegedly fled. He has since been incommunicado.

Saturday PUNCH learnt that Doreen underwent further tests and treatments at Mirabel, results of which would be handed over to the police.

When our correspondent reached out to Ehis by phone, he said he did not run away but that he got a job offer outside Lagos.

He refused to answer questions on whether he indeed raped the girl or not. When he was asked which city he was in, he said he could not say.

Ehis confirmed that he reported the case to the police first.

He said, "I reported the matter to the police because the girl accused me of raping her. I did not touch her. The private hospital we use actually did the test first and they said she was not raped.
"We went to Mirabel together and the officials were not around. I did not know they had gone back to do the test. The police have contacted me and I told them that I would come and appear when I am done with the job issue."

He refused to say when he would come back to Lagos and make the appearance at the police station.

However, three weeks after, he has yet to come back.

Doreen's family said the police said he was no longer reachable.

Saturday PUNCH reached out to the spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, Abimbola Oyeyemi, who promised to find out the veracity of the allegations against the DPO of Ajuwon Police Division and the status of the case.

More than a week after his promise, Oyeyemi had yet to do so and no longer picked calls to his line.

DPO Locks Up R*pe Victim... man who "did it" on the run

*Alleged r*pist accuses victim of stealing meat, flees
16-year-old Doreen chose her words one at a time. She spoke as someone tired but she was lucid.

As the girl spoke slowly, her mother explained that it was the effect of a barrage of medication that she had been given at the Mirabel S*xual Assault Referral Centre, Ikeja, Lagos where she had gone for a test the previous day.

Less than two days before her visit to Mirabel, Doreen, a quiet secondary school year two student, was languishing behind the counter of the Ajuwon Police Division, in Akute, a border community between Ogun and Lagos states.

Director of the Esther Child Rights Foundation, who is handling the case has called on the police in Ogun State to redeem their image to ensure that Ehis is tracked down and arrested.

According to her, without this, the police would only be telling the public that they have been bribed to let a suspected r*pist loose.

Wife Who Murdered Ex-PDP Chairman’s Son Remanded

Posted: 25 Nov 2017 12:39 AM PST

The High Court of the Federal Capital Territory in Jabi, Abuja, on Friday remanded in Suleja Prison, Maryam Sanda, who allegedly stabbed her husband, Bilyamin Bello, to death on November 19.

Justice Yusuf Halilu remanded her in prison after she pleaded not guilty to two counts of culpable homicide and causing the deceased grievous hurt.

The charges were preferred against her by the police on November 20.

The defendant, a nursing mother, allegedly stabbed her husband in the chest and neck with a broken bottle at about 3.50am on November 19.

The incident was said to have taken place at their residence located at 4, Pakali Close, Wuse 2, Abuja.

The deceased was a son of a former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Haliru Bello. Sanda was already seated in-between two women in the courtroom, feeding her infant when the trial judge, Justice Yusuf Halilu, arrived at exactly 11 am on Friday.

When her case was called, she stood up and handed the baby to one of the women.

She held a Qu'ran and a Tasbih (Islamic prayer beads) as she headed to the dock.

Standing in the dock, the judge asked her to unveil her face.

"I hope you know that you are before a court of law. Don't shield your face from the court. You should try as much as possible to pay attention to the charges that will be read to you and try as much as possible to understand," the judge said.

She responded "I am not guilty" in a whimpering tone.

Her alleged stabbing of the deceased on the chest was said to have led to his death.

She was, therefore, accused of culpable homicide in count 1 and the offence is punishable by death under section 221 of the Penal Code Law.

She was also accused of causing Bello "grievous hurt" by stabbing him on the neck, an act said to be contrary to Section 240 (g) and punishable under Section 247 of the Penal Code Law.

The prosecuting counsel, Mr. James Idachaba, told the court that the charges filed against the defendant on November 20 were products of a preliminary investigation.

He said with new facts that emerged after further investigation, the charges would still be amended.

The defence counsel, Mr. Oseni Musa, asked the court to grant the defendant bail.

He pleaded that since the defendant was nursing an infant of less than six months old, she should be remanded in police custody pending the determination of her bail application. But the trial judge directed that the defence should file a formal application in that regard.

He insisted that once an accused was arraigned, the proper place of custody was the prison and not the custody of the investigating agency.

The judge then ordered her to be remanded in the Suleja Prison and adjourned until December 7.

The charges read in part, "That you, Maryam Sanda, female, adult of 4 Pakali Close, Wuse 2, Abuja, on November 19, 2017, at about 0350hours at No. 4 Pakali Close, Wuse 2, Abuja within the Abuja Judicial Division, did commit the offence of culpable homicide punishable with death in that you caused the death of one Bilyaminu Bello Haliru, male adult of No. 4 Pakali Close, Wuse 2, Abuja by stabbing him in the chest with a broken bottle which eventually led to his death and you did so with the knowledge that your act is likely to cause his death."

Atiku’s Exit: Panic As Mass Defection Looms In APC

Posted: 25 Nov 2017 12:09 AM PST

There were fears among the All Progressives Congress chieftains on Friday, following the defection of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar from the ruling party.

It was gathered that although the APC was expecting Atiku's big exit, it dawned on it on Friday that the former vice-president's action could lead to mass defection from the ruling party.

The Punch learnt that the fears were worsened by the feeling of some leaders of the party that the fate of the Peoples Democratic Party in 2014 could befall the APC before the 2019 elections.

In 2014, the PDP was weakened following the exit of some governors and National Assembly members, including a former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso; ex-Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi; Senator Bukola Saraki, and the then Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal.

Chieftains of the APC, who confided in Punch, said although the ruling party had been waiting for Atiku's defection, it was uncomfortable with the fact that there were many aggrieved members who would soon dump the party in power.

One of the party leaders cited Kwankwaso and a former Lagos State governor, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, as two of those who were not happy with the way the party was being run.

He said more than two years after coming to power, President Muhammadu Buhari had not made appointments that would bring into government those who worked for his election.

The chieftain also said that associates of the President including the Chief of Staff, Mr. Abba Kyari and Buhari's nephew, Maman Daura, "have constituted themselves into a powerful cabal. They take key decisions in this government. Those who ensured Buhari's election have been sidelined. If the APC and the Presidency dismiss Atiku's defection, they are not realistic. There are fears that the party may crumble. Apart from the Minister of Women Affairs, Aisha Alhassan, there are other appointees of this government that are supporters of Atiku."

APC instituted regime of draconian clampdown in govt and party – Atiku
In a statement on Friday morning, Atiku explained why he left the APC. He said that while other parties had purged themselves of the arbitrariness and unconstitutionality, the ruling party adopted same practices.

He stated that the ruling party had instituted "a regime of a draconian clampdown on all forms of democracy within the party and the government it produced."

Atiku disclosed the decision to leave the ruling party in a statement he personally signed.

He went down memory lane to recall that on December 19, 2013, he hosted members of the APC in his house in Abuja.

He said the party members were there to appeal to him to join the APC after he left the PDP because of the crisis emanating from the special convention of the former ruling party on August 31, 2013.

He recalled that he and several of his loyalists were left in limbo at the time the APC came calling.

Atiku said, "It was under this cloud that members of the APC made the appeal to me to join their party, with the promise that the injustices and failure to abide by its own constitution which had dogged the then PDP, would not be replicated in the APC and with the assurance that the vision of the founding fathers, which I had for the PDP, could be actualised through the All Progressives Congress.

"It was on the basis of this invitation and the assurances made to me that I, being party-less at that time, due to the fractionalisation of my party, accepted on February 2, 2014, the hand of fellowship given to me by the All Progressives Congress.

"On that day, I said 'it is the struggle for democracy and constitutionalism and service to my country and my people that are driving my choice and my decision" to accept the invitation to join the All Progressives Congress."

Explaining the reason behind his decision to leave the APC, Atiku said events, which unfolded soon after the party took power, proved his earlier optimism was misplaced. He said like any other human and many other Nigerians, he was fallible.

To buttress his point, the former vice-president said, "Only last year, a governor produced by the party wrote a secret memorandum to the President which ended up being leaked. In that memo, he admitted that the All Progressives Congress had 'not only failed to manage expectations of a populace that expected overnight 'change' but has failed to deliver even mundane matters of governance."

"Of the party itself, that same governor said, 'Mr. President, sir your relationship with the national leadership of the party, both the formal (NWC) and informal (Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, Atiku Abubakar, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso), and former governors of ANPP, PDP (that joined us) and ACN, is perceived by most observers to be at best frosty. Many of them are aggrieved due to what they consider the total absence of consultations with them on your part and those you have assigned such duties."

He expressed disappointment that since the memorandum was written, nothing had been done to address the issues raised in it till this day.

Atiku accused the party of making false promises especially to those who were invited to join.

"More importantly, the party we put in place has failed and continues to fail our people, especially our young people. How can we have a federal cabinet without even one single youth?

"A party that does not take the youth into account is a dying party. The future belongs to young people," he said.

Atiku noted that he and the others who accepted the invitation to join the APC were eager to make positive changes for the country but that "we fell for a mirage."

He further explained that he arrived at the decision to leave the APC after due consultation with his God, family, supporters and the Nigerian people from all walks of life.

We're waiting to see number of people that will follow him – APC
When contacted, the APC National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, said, the party was waiting to see the number of people that would follow Atiku.

He stated, "A loss of fortune is in numbers. If we are able to see the number of people that would follow the former Vice-President to his new party that is when we will begin to worry, but we have not seen that. So, when we see, we will know whether we need to worry or not. It is about the number."

Governor Abiola Ajimobi & Wife On A Yacht, All Loved Up

Posted: 24 Nov 2017 11:34 PM PST

*Critics flay Oyo Governor for embarking on pleasure cruise while state experiences decline
Abiola Ajimobi loves the good life. Thus he lives it unapologetically. No matter whose ox is gored, the incumbent governor of Oyo State covets luxury and exploits it as the lusty geologist mines ocean floors for the fabled black gold, The Capital reports.

Read their report below...

Thus it was hardly surprising that while the people of Oyo groan under the deadly yoke of poverty and ineffective governance, Governor Ajimobi embarked on a pleasurable cruise aboard a luxury yacht with his wife, Florence.

A recent picture of the couple surfaced in the social space and it features the Oyo governor and his wife in a merry pose aboard the vessel widely acknowledged as the rich man's toy. Gaiety and bliss pervades the hearts of the couple apparently, even as several couples in the state struggle are robbed of similar leisurely indulgences, as they are forced to battle interminable odds and inconveniences occasioned by their state government's inadequacies.

A surreal ecstasy enwraps the lives and home of the governor and his wife but it is not the
the bliss of animals that lies at a lower level, it is the bliss of a man and his wife of at peace with their lot in life.

Sources close to the couple however, revealed that it is never a crime for the Oyo governor and his wife to take time out to enjoy their otherwise busy lives. According to them, having given too much of their lives in service of the state and in pursuit of interests of the less privileged, they deserve to treat themselves to moments of bliss and leisurely activities.

Florence, the First Lady of Oyo is undoubtedly thrilled to be the wife of Oyo's most important figure. As evident in the picture, she is more than happy that despite the challenges of juggling public office and the hassles matrimony, she still has Ajimobi her husband for keeps.

Apologists of the governor and his wife argued that their cruise on the luxury yacht, at a time Oyo struggles through grinding poverty and policy failure, is worth the people's goodwill and applause.

Another school of thought however, argues that even though the couple is entitled to moments of private bliss, they ought to understand that several folk would find it insensitive of them to embark on a sea cruise on a luxury yacht while the Oyo electorate staggers blindly and unaided, through the wilderness of change that Ajimobi's government has failed to deliver to them.

Whatever anyone thinks, Ajimobi and his wife has earned the bragging rights to their luxury yacht cruise, according to the governor's apologists.

Posted: 24 Nov 2017 10:34 PM PST

The small village of Albinen, in the stunning Canton of Valais, is offering families handsome sums of money to move to their remote community.

Albinen is a quiet, peaceful town with spectacular alpine views, but municipality president, Beat Jost, said families and young people are leaving in droves.
The population has dwindled to a measly 240, and the village school has even closed, forcing the community's 7 remaining children to commute to another nearby town.
So, what's a small villagein a rich country to do in times like these?

Pay off prospective new residents, of course.
