Smacking children to become illegal across Britain | Mr Olumide's Blog

Posted: 22 Nov 2017 03:12 AM PST

Smacking children is set to become illegal across Britain amid planned law changes in Wales and Scotland.

Parents in England will have to consider how to punish their offspring when travelling around the UK.

Physical punishment of children has no place in a modern and progressive Wales, Minister for Children Huw Irranca-Davies said...
Speaking on Universal Children's Day, the Minister said he was working to take forward the Welsh Government's plans to introduce legislation to remove the defence of reasonable punishment.

If passed by the National Assembly, it will mean that smacking in Wales will become illegal.
That will leave England as the only place where children are legally still allowed to smack their children but could cause problems for any English parents takling their children over the borders.

In Wales, as in England, it is lawful for a parent or carer to smack their child where it amounts to "reasonable chastisement". This defence is laid down in the Children Act 2004, but it is not defined in the legislation.

Whether a "smack" amounts to reasonable punishment will depend on the circumstances of each case taking into consideration factors like the age of the child and the nature of the smack, according to legal experts.

Physical punishment will be considered "unreasonable" if it leaves a mark on the child or if the child is hit with an implement such as a cane or a belt.

Smacking children will be banned in Scotland, the Scottish Government confirmed last month.

The legislation will remove the defence of "justifiable assault" in Scots law, which allows parents to use physical punishment to admonish a child.

Catholic school forced to cover up accidentally suggestive statue of saint giving boy bread | Mr Olumide's Blog

Posted: 22 Nov 2017 02:47 AM PST

A Catholic school has been forced to cover a recently-erected statue after it raised eyebrows.

The statue of Saint Martin de Porres, shown giving a loaf of bread to a young boy, was installed outside Blackfriars Priory School in Adelaide last week.

But unfortunately for school staff, the sculpture ended up looking provocative.

The unintentionally provocative design has sparked a wave of social media activity, forcing the school to take action to cover up the unfortunate statue.
According to News.AU.come, Principal Simon Cobiac released a statement on Facebook saying the sculpture was designed in Vietnam by the same sculptor used to create another statue in the school.

Dreaded Badoo strikes in Lagos Church, kills mother, children

Posted: 22 Nov 2017 02:02 AM PST

The Badoo cult struck on Tuesday at Temu village in the Ikosi-Ejirin Local Council Development Area, Epe, Lagos State, killing a mother and her two kids.

The victims, identified as Iyabo (mother), David, 4; and 8-year-old Rachael, were reportedly killed around 2am on Tuesday at a Celestial Church in the neighbourhood while they were asleep.

It was learnt that the assailants had scaled the fence to gain entry into the church and thereafter used a stone to pound their targets to death.

It was gathered that the church also served as the residence of the family.

The Punch was told that the victims had on Monday returned from a two-week trip.

The woman's husband was reportedly not around when the gang struck.

A resident of the area, Adeshina Idowu, said the family moved to the area six months ago, noting that the community was stunned by the attack.

He said, "The family moved into the community six months ago. Somebody rushed into my house this morning (Tuesday) and said that Mama David was dead. It was when I got to the scene that I saw the woman's two kids were also killed. The scene of the attack indicated that Badoo was at work because there was a stone at the scene.

"I don't know how the assailants got into the community because we have security guards patrolling everywhere. How they entered into the victims' compound is a mystery to us."

Another resident, who identified himself only as Tajudeen, said the incident was reported to the police at the Agbowa Police Division, adding that policemen from the division took the corpses away.

He said residents had taken the incident for a robbery, until they got to the scene.

He said, "The family just returned to the village on Monday. Initially, we thought it was a robbery. But when we entered into their apartment, we saw a stone used by the assailants and there was no sign that any property of the family was stolen. That was when it occurred to us that the assailants were members of Badoo."

The Police PRO, Olarinde Famous-Cole, said a landlady and a commercial motorcycle rider had been arrested for the killings.

He said, "A case of murder was reported at the Agbowa Police Station. The landlady and an okada rider (motorcyclist) who reside in the compound have been arrested and transferred to the homicide section of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Yaba.

"The incident has no connection with ritual killings as insinuated. The era of ritual killings is gone in the state. Investigation is ongoing."

Uber fined $8.9m for using criminals as drivers | Mr Olumide's Blog

Posted: 22 Nov 2017 02:02 AM PST

Uber is in the news again and this time a Colorado, U.S. regulators issued an $8.9 million fine against its parent company for allowing employees with serious criminal or motor vehicle offenses to work for the company as drivers.

The Colorado Public Utilities Commission said it launched an investigation into the ride-hailing service in March after an Uber passenger said his driver assaulted him in the mountain resort town of Vail.

Within the last year and a half, the commission said it found that nearly 60 of the company's drivers were allowed to work in Colorado despite having previous felony convictions.

The drivers included a habitual offender, a former prison escape and others with major traffic violations including drunk driving.

Colorado state law prevents people with felony convictions, alcohol or drug-related driving offenses, unlawful sexual offenses and major traffic violations from working for rideshare companies.

"We have determined that Uber had background check information that should have disqualified these drivers under the law, but they were allowed to drive anyway.

"These actions put the safety of passengers in extreme jeopardy," Public Utilities Commission Director Doug Dean said.

In a statement, the commission said it also found felony convictions that Uber didn't catch, and "in other cases, we could not confirm criminal background checks were even conducted by the company."

Uber said in a statement that it recently discovered a "process error" that was inconsistent with Colorado's ridesharing regulations and affected what the company called a small number of drivers.

It said it notified the state and fixed the problem but did not elaborate.

"Per Uber safety policies and Colorado state regulations, drivers with access to the Uber app must undergo a nationally accredited third party background screening.

"We will continue to work closely with the CPUC to enable access to safe, reliable transportation options for all Coloradans," it said.

The Colorado PUC said the $8.9 million penalty was calculated based on a $2,500 fine for each day an employee was illegally behind the wheel.

The commission said Uber can pay half of that amount within ten days to resolve the case or it can schedule a hearing and contest the allegations in before a judge.

The company's image has been tarnished by findings of sexual harassment of employees and multiple reports of drivers assaulting passengers.

Last week, two women who said they were sexually assaulted by Uber drivers filed a federal lawsuit in San Francisco alleging that inadequate background checks and monitoring left them and thousands of others vulnerable.

Soldiers chain man to motorcycle in Lagos, drag him on street

Posted: 22 Nov 2017 01:37 AM PST

An electronics dealer in Ikorodu area of Lagos State, Lukman Lambo, may have to undergo a surgery to regain the use of his left eye.

The injury was allegedly inflicted on him by soldiers, who also dragged him on the street.
It was said that the girlfriend of one of the soldiers had a disagreement with Lukman's younger brother, Saheed Lambo.

Saheed and the lady, identified simply as Dasola, were neighbours on Itulubajo Lane, Alhaji Street, Ikorodu.

According to Punch, the duo were lovers, until a few weeks ago when a disagreement over money strained their relationship.

It was gathered that some residents clashed around 11am on Saturday, November 11, in the house where Saheed lives.

It was said that Dasola went to watch the altercation.

Saheed was said to have rebuked her for poking her nose into a situation that did not concern her.

At about 5pm on that day, Dasola reportedly led her soldier boyfriend in company with three other soldiers to Saheed's residence.

The soldiers did not meet Saheed at home, but they descended on his elder brother, Lukman, who was on a visit.

The victim told our correspondent that one of the soldiers believed to be Dasola's boyfriend rained blows on his face.

He said he was handcuffed to a motorcycle while one of the soldiers rode the bike and dragged him on the street.

Lukman said the soldiers left him when blood started coming out from his eyes.

He said, "Where Saheed lives is our family house, but I don't reside there. I went to the house and someone told me that Saheed had a fight with a lady who had gone to call soldiers to beat him up.

"The person added that the soldiers might kill him and I asked him why they would kill him, not knowing they were already behind me. They were four in number and three of them were in army uniform without tags.

"They beat me up and in the process, the one that is befriending the lady hit me on the face. They handcuffed me to a motorcycle and dragged me on the street.

"People begged them to leave me, but they refused. They should be from Odogunyan barracks. I can identify them if I see them.

"Doctors at the Ikorodu General Hospital, where I was admitted, said I might have to undergo a surgery. I have spent a lot of money on the eye."

The case was reported at the Igbogbo Police Station and Dasola had been arrested.

Saheed explained that a week before the incident, he had taken Dasola to an inn in the community.

He said after the date, he gave her N1,500, but she rejected it, insisting that she would collect N2,500.

Saheed said, "She later collected the N1,500, but tore my clothes. Afterwards, she would abuse me whenever she saw me. On Saturday, November 11, my friends fought in our compound and she came. I told her she was nosy.

"We abused each other and she left and later came back with the soldiers to intimidate me."

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Olarinde-Famous Cole, confirmed the assault.

He said, "Investigations commenced after the case was reported. The lady was arrested for conspiring with the soldiers to assault the man. He was taken to a hospital for treatment.

"The Divisional Police Officer found out that the suspects were from an army barracks. We have to write to the Nigerian Army to report their conduct and get them identified so that they could be brought to book."

How Teenage Suicide Bomber Killed 50 In Nigerian Mosque

Posted: 22 Nov 2017 12:47 AM PST

Scores lost their lives in two separate attacks in Adamawa state on Tuesday. In Mubi, a teenage suicide bomber attacked a mosque in Kunu Araha area of Mubi town on Tuesday morning and killed 50 worshippers, according to the state police command.

In the second incident, herdsmen and farmers engaged each other in an overnight clash in Safere and Kedimsi villages, which reportedly led to the death of many other persons.

Though the police confirmed the herdsmen, farmers' clash, it did not give the casualty figure.

Nine persons, according to eyewitnesses' account, are reportedly missing in the two affected villages while the charred remains of victims, mostly children in Safere and Kedimsi villages, have been deposited at the Numan General Hospital.

The Adamawa State Governor, Mohammed Bindow, visited the injured victims of the herdsmen, farmers' clash at the Numan General Hospital, before he proceeded to Mubi, to sympathise with the Emir, Alhaji Isa Abubakar and the families of victims of the mosque attacks.

The suicide bomber, described by the police as "a 17-year-old boy," detonated his explosive device shortly after the worshippers ended the subh (dawn) prayer at a mosque in Kunu Araha area of Mubi on Tuesday morning.

According to eyewitnesses, the suspected suicide bomber attacked the worshippers around 5am during the Muslim early morning prayers.

"I counted 27 dead and 49 injured people as they are being evacuated to the hospital," said one Mubi resident, who simply identified himself as Danladi.

The Chairman of Mubi North Local Government, Alhaji Musa Bello, said he would give details of the incident later.

Also confirming the incident, the Executive Secretary of the Adamawa State Emergency Management Agency, Mr. Haruna Furo, said his men were on their way to Mubi to assess the situation.

"I can't tell you the casualty figure for now," Furo said.

However, Adamawa state Police Command said the death toll in Mubi mosque suicide attack was 50.

The command's Public Relations Officer, SP Othman Abubakar, confirmed the development.

"There was an explosion at a mosque in Mubi and over 50 lives were lost in that incident. Initially, I told you it was 30 but the figure has risen to 50. A boy of about 17- year- old wearing a suicide vest entered the mosque along with other worshippers.

"Immediately after the prayers, he detonated the bomb. Many of the wounded are receiving treatment at various hospitals in Mubi North Local Government where the attacks occurred around Kunu Araha area," he said.

The incident was the first in three years since the liberation of Mubi town from Boko Haram insurgents in 2014.

Bindow condemned the unfortunate mosque attacks, saying those bent on destroying the hard-earned peace in the city of Mubi would not prevail.

In a statement signed by his Special Assistant on Press and Media Affairs, Martins Dickson, Bindow said it was an act of wickedness perpetrated by criminals who were bent on destroying the hard-earned peace in Mubi and other parts of the state.

President Buhari has described the mosque attack as "very cruel and dastardly."

How DSS Operatives Stop EFCC From Arresting Ex-DG

Posted: 22 Nov 2017 12:22 AM PST

Officials of the Department of State Services and the EFCC were involved in a showdown for over 13 hours on Tuesday when EFCC operatives stormed the home of the immediate past Director General of the DSS, Ekpenyong Ita, to effect his arrest.

Ita, who served as the head of the DSS from 2010 to 2015, had been invited by the EFCC for his alleged role in the arms scam involving a former National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd.), and other service chiefs who have since been arraigned.

The Punch learnt that while other agencies had cooperated with the EFCC and released their officials for probe, the DSS had refused to hand over its officials to the anti-graft agency for over a year.

Following the refusal of Ita to honour a series of EFCC invitations, our correspondent was informed that the operatives of the anti-graft agency, armed with an arrest and search warrants, surrounded Ita's home at 46 Mamman Nasir Street, Asokoro as early as 4am to prevent him from escaping.

Our correspondent was informed that at daybreak, the EFCC operatives approached the premises and presented the warrant to the armed DSS officials securing the building.

However, as the EFCC officials attempted to enter, the heavily armed DSS officials, some of whom were wearing masks, refused to allow the EFCC men inside.

The DSS officials simply said they were acting on "orders from above."

They also threatened to open fire on the persistent EFCC operatives.

The EFCC officials then retreated temporarily and cordoned off all roads leading to the property with a yellow tape which bore the words, 'crime scene, do not cross.'

Our correspondent, who was at the scene for about four hours from 12.30pm to 4.15pm, reported that the atmosphere was tense as both sides refused to back down.

An EFCC official said, "Mr. Ekpeyong Ita is being investigated for offences bordering on alleged theft and diversion of public funds. Shortly after we arrived, the DSS reinforced its security presence at the property, with the deployment of about 30 armed operatives.

"The refusal of the DSS operatives to allow the EFCC execute valid search and arrest warrants is really worrisome. I don't know whether it is within their brief to prevent a law enforcement agency from executing arrest or a search warrant on a property belonging to a retired member of staff of the agency.

"The suspect in question is not a serving officer of the DSS, which makes this action particularly reprehensible."

Our correspondent observed that when a member of the EFCC team attempted to take photographs, some DSS officials, including some wearing masks, cocked their guns but the EFCC officials accompanied by over 15 policemen, cocked their own rifles in return and called their bluff.

Meanwhile, a mild drama also played out at the official quarters of a former Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency, Ambassador Ayo Oke.

About seven policemen also cordoned off his residence located at 10 Mamman Nasir Street, Asokoro.

The EFCC said Oke who was recently sacked by President Buhari for allegedly stashing away N13bn in a house in Ikoyi, had been refusing to honour invitations for over three weeks.

The commission also obtained search and arrest warrants for Oke and his wife, Folasade, but were denied access by men of the DSS.

However, a source within the NIA said Oke did not ignore invitations but had written to the anti-graft agency informing it that he would do so at a later date.

The NIA official said, "The former DG honoured the EFCC's invitation in Abuja but he was told to go to the Lagos office of the EFCC which is in charge of the case. He wrote to the EFCC informing the commission that he had not yet fully handed over to his successor and had not even finished moving his belongings from his official apartment.

"He told them to give him more time but they decided to surround his house with policemen."

The source said the DG's wife had travelled out of the country for medical reasons before she was invited and promised that she would return soon.

"Ambassador Oke was placed on suspension in May and his wife waited for over five months but when the report was not implemented, she could not wait any longer as she had a doctor's appointment abroad. She was already out of the country when the EFCC invited her," the source said.

Efforts by Punch to get the reaction of the DSS failed as the agency does not have a spokersperson.

Rita Ora reveals why she froze her eggs in her early 20s | Mr Olumide's Blog

Posted: 21 Nov 2017 10:07 PM PST

Songstress Rita Ora, 26, has revealed she won't take any chances when it comes to her fertility, having announced that she froze her eggs years ago.
Appearing on Sunrise this Wednesday, the UK-born beauty spoke of her desire to start a family, saying:

'Me being 27 soon, I thought about this when I was in my early 20s, about kids.'
Maybe that is me being a hypochondriac, but I have always wanted a big family and my doctor asked me, 'I think you should freeze your eggs when I was in my early 20s', that is what he said to me,' she went on.
I think it depends on people's beliefs and I'm a big believer in using what we have in making the most of it,' she said.
'I have never said that [I've had my eggs frozen] on TV, and I'm 26 so I know people might say, 'wow, that's so young'. I just wanted to really be safe. Maybe that is me being crazy,' she added.

Over 5 Million Pupils In 19 States Now Being Fed Free Daily

Posted: 21 Nov 2017 09:47 PM PST

In furtherance of its goal to tackle poverty and hunger, and to create jobs for Nigerians in line with its inclusive growth plan, the Buhari administration's National Home-Grown School Feeding (NHGSF) Programme is now in 19 states across the federation. They include Anambra, Enugu, Oyo, Osun, Ogun, Ebonyi, Zamfara, Delta, Abia, Benue, Plateau, Bauchi, Taraba, Kaduna, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Imo, Jigawa and Niger states.

So far, over five million pupils (5,226,039) in 28,249 schools in these states are currently been fed under the programme, while Kano and Katsina states are expected to be added to the beneficiaries states in the coming weeks.

Also, over 50,000 cooks are currently engaged under the programme.

The school feeding programme, which is part of President Muhammadu Buhari administration's N500 billion National Social Investment Programmes, NSIP, has a target to feed 5.5 million schoolchildren by the end of 2017.

Meanwhile, the School Feeding Programme is collaborating with the Federal Ministry of Health to deliver an integrated deworming programme for pupils in all public primary schools classes 1 to 6 across 17 states currently under the NHGSFP in the country.

At least 243 Local Government Areas will benefit from the deworming exercise in the 17 states, including Abia, Akwa Ibom, Enugu, Niger, Osun, Bauchi, Jigawa, Katsina, Zamfara, Anambra, Benue, Imo, Kano, Kaduna, Ebonyi, Delta and Plateau states.

The integrated programme, which is scheduled for the first and second week of December in these states, will deliver three different drugs for the treatment of diseases endemic to specific states; particularly schistosomiasis; soil-transmitted helminths and river blindness/onchocerciasis. The drugs to be distributed are Albendazole, Ivermectin and Parazaquintel.

Supported by the Federal Government, three facilitators would be within the states for the period to achieve these objectives and ensure that the pupils in these states are dewormed.
