Maryam Sanda arrested for stabbing husband to death | Mr Olumide's Blog Posted: 21 Nov 2017 03:32 AM PST The Nigerian Police has confirmed the arrest of Maryam Sanda for allegedly stabbing her husband, Haliru Bello to death. Bello, 35, son of Haliru Bello, a former chairman of the Peoples' Democratic Party (PDP) has been buried according to Islamic rites in Abuja, after prayers at the National Mosque. Police Public Relations Officer, DPS Anjuguri Manzah, in a chat with newsmen said that the suspect was arrested on Sunday night. He said that she would be charged to court after investigations have been concluded. According to the police, the investigation was being handled by its homicide department adding that investigation would be concluded soon. Haliru Bello's death was not natural, as he was allegedly killed in his Maitama home in Abuja by his wife, Maryam Sanda. Maryam is the daughter of Maimuna Aliyu, former Aso Saving Bank executive. According to reports, Maryam allegedly killed her husband on Saturday night, stabbing him several times. Multiple reports online said she attacked her husband based on allegations of infidelity after seeing a text message on his phone. Maryam was said to have stabbed Bello, who would have clocked 36 on November 23, thrice in the back. She also reportedly stabbed him several times on his manhood. After stabbing him, she drove him to the hospital for treatment but he did not survive the attack. Anjuri Manza, spokesman of FCT police command, confirmed the murder : "We are investigating the matter,"he told the Cable. According to reports, it was not the first time Maryam would attack Bello violently. She once bit part of his ear off during an argument. Bello was treated at a hospital before returning home. Some report said he was advised to leave the house but he refused, only to be brutally attacked the second time. The couple had a daughter together. Bello's father was the acting chairman of the PDP board of trustees from 2015-2016, minister of defence from 2011-2012, and minister of communications from 2001-2003. How Money Fight Led to Arrest of Killers of Politician in Lagos Posted: 21 Nov 2017 03:27 AM PST Operatives of the Inspector-General of Police' (IGP) Intelligence Response Team (IRT) have arrested four suspects who allegedly murdered a stalwart of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Festac, Emmanuel Ubah alias Onwa. Ubah, the head of Community Policing Youth Vanguard (CPYV) in Amuwo Odofin area, was shot dead on the eve of council elections in July. He was shot four times on the head while inside his by assailants, who threw all his mobile phones into the canal. Onwa's death sparked outrage in Amuwo Odofin, with his friends and associates insisting that it was politically motivated. After months of tracking the culprits, the police Monday paraded Michael Fashola, Mufutau Tokosi alias TK, Abidemi Adeleye alias Baido and Fatai Onifade alias Apashe. The suspects were said to have been contracted to kill Ubah but they denied the allegation, insisting that they murdered him because they felt threatened by his influence in the area. It was gathered that the suspects, who fled to Cotonou after allegedly committing the offence, later had a disagreement on the balance of their payment. They were said to have been embroiled in fights with Onifade, who was allegedly their link to the person who ordered the murder. Parading the suspects, Lagos acting Police Commissioner Imohimi Edgal said a Barreta Pistol, two live ammunition and one pump action gun were recovered from them. Confessing to the crime, Fashola said he was brought into the picture by Tokosi, who contacted him on the request of Adeleye. He said: "I did not know the Onwa. It was TK who contacted me. Baido asked him to call me for the deal. The initial plan was to harass Onwa but I shot him by mistake. I shot him more than once. It was on his head. Baido was inside the car with him. They told us where to meet them. I was not paid anything. I gave the gun back to Apashe after shooting him." Adeleye, who called the deceased on phone arpund 8pm and requested for a meeting, admitted that Ubah picked him up at Synergy Bus Stop. He said: "I called him around 8pm and told him we needed to discuss issues relating to politics. He told me to wait at Synergy Bus Stop that he would call me in 30 minutes. I was the closest person to him. We were friends. He came and picked me up and said we should go and get Apashe (Onifade). "He did not know there was a plan to threaten him. It was my plan with Apashe because we felt he was too powerful. While on our way, Michael and Mufutau blocked us with motorcycle. "Onwa opened the car and was arguing with them. One of his legs was on the ground. I was inside the car. The next thing I heard was gunshots. It was Michael that shot him and it is not true that I held his hand while he was struggling with him. "When they shot him, I ran away from the car. Then, I picked his phones and threw it into the water because I was afraid. I did not want anyone to trace me as the last person he spoke to on phone." Onifade, who masterminded the attack, said he was bitter because the deceased was very powerful. He said he was threatened by the deceased's influence and that as the leader of the Oodua People's Congress (OPC) in the area, he felt that the deceased usually sponsored boys who attacked him. Onifade said: "We did not plan to kill him. We just wanted to shakara him. I am an OPC member and I know the number of times I have been shot at. I felt he was the one sponsoring the boys that usually attacked me." culled from Olu famous Mr Olumide's Blog |
Student kills herself after finding out her fiance was a married man | Mr Olumide's Blog Posted: 21 Nov 2017 03:22 AM PST A student killed herself after discovering the man she agreed to marry was already wed and intended to have her as his polygamous second wife, according to reports. Danara Kaipova, 20, was found hanged soon after finding out her groom-to-be apparently already had a spouse and two children. Her devastated mum said her daughter had thought she'd found her true love. Danara was allegedly 'kidnapped' from her college in Kazakhstan this summer by wealthy Birzhan Doshakaev, 29. The act of 'bride-stealing' is a barbaric medieval tradition that continues in Kazakhstan and other areas of the former Soviet Union. According to Mirror UK,despite being 'stolen', she reportedly told her friends and family she loved him and made clear she was happy to marry him after he took her to his home city, Atyrau, where she met his parents. Her mother Inzhu Kaipova said: "My daughter kept telling me that he had great parents, and that she was happy. I believed her."She had found her "true love" she said. But the distraught mother added: "Now we know that this man had a wife and two children."He did not say a word about it to our daughter."Danara killed herself when she found out about it."She hanged herself." She said Doshakaev's family, who reportedly knew about his plans, "humiliated my girl" and that he lied by not telling her that he 'had a wife and children'. Danara, an A-grade student at her agricultural college, had also told her friends that she was happy after she was apparently kidnapped and taken 325 miles to his city. She had invited them to her planned wedding. Police have begun a criminal investigation into whether Danara was forced into suicide by the cruel behaviour of the man she loved. culled from MPNB Mr Olumide's Blog |
Japanese mother dumps her four babies in buckets filled with concrete | Mr Olumide's Blog Posted: 21 Nov 2017 03:22 AM PST A mother who dumped four of her babies in buckets filled with concrete that she then kept in her apartment for two decades was arrested in Japan on Tuesday (Nov 21). Mayumi Saito, 53, told investigators she had given birth to the infants between 1992 and 1997, a police spokesman told AFP. Saito handed herself in at an Osaka police station on Monday and confessed, saying she did not think her desperate financial predicament made it possible for her to look after the children, local media reported. Detectives who searched her home found four concrete-filled buckets in a closet. Scans indicate that each one contains what appears to be the remains of an infant, the Asahi Shimbun reported. Police are still interviewing the woman, who lives with her son, and trying to determine whether she killed the babies or whether they were stillborn, the report said. "I did not think I could afford to raise them. I had no one to talk to," she told police, according to national broadcaster NHK. It is unclear why she turned herself in now, local media said. Saito came forward three weeks after police arrested Takahiro Shiraishi, 27, dubbed the "Twitter killer", who has confessed to killing and dismembering nine people he met via social media. Investigators found him in his apartment just outside Tokyo surrounded by the festering remains of his victims inside coolers and containers. culled from MPNB Mr Olumide's Blog |

Kim Kardashian cuts ties with longtime assistant Stephanie Shepherd | Mr Olumide's Blog Posted: 21 Nov 2017 02:22 AM PST Kim Kardashian has cut ties with her longtime assistant, Stephanie Shepherd, just after Kim expressed her displeasure with Shepherd's cozy relationship with sister Kourtney. Shepherd has been by Kardashian's side since 2013, when she scored the gig as Kim's assistant with a connection from former Pussycat Doll Robin Antin. Since joining the Kardashian crew, Shepherd's role has expanded ,though it seems her attempt to assume more responsibility was ultimately what made Kim cut her loose. Kim made a decision to let Stephanie go. She was a good assistant but when Stephanie wanted to transition into a larger role with Kim's brand and businesses, it just didn't work," sources told People. "Kim gave her the chance but after a short period of time it became clear that Stephane just didn't have the knowledge to take on a role like that. Kim made an executive decision to part ways."Shepherd revealed in May that she'd been promoted to COO of Kardashian West Brands, and considered herself "Kim's liaison" rather than her assistant. And though the formerly inseparable pair "aren't really speaking" at the moment, according to sources, Shepherd is likely still speaking to Kim's sister Kourtney. culled from MPNB Mr Olumide's Blog |
Trump says 60,000 Haitians must leave the U.S. | Mr Olumide's Blog Posted: 21 Nov 2017 02:22 AM PST The Trump administration said Monday it is ending a temporary residency permit program that has allowed almost 60,000 citizens from Haiti to live and work in the United States since a 2010 powerful earthquake shook the Caribbean nation. The Homeland Security Department said conditions in Haiti have improved significantly, so the benefit will be extended one last time — until July 2019 — to give Haitians time to prepare to return home. "Since the 2010 earthquake, the number of displaced people in Haiti has decreased by 97%," the department said in a press release. "Haiti is able to safely receive traditional levels of returned citizens." Advocates and members of Congress from both parties had asked the Trump administration for an 18-month extension of the program, known as Temporary Protected Status. Haitian President Jovenel Moise's government also requested the extension. Advocates for Haitians say conditions in the island nation haven't improved nearly enough for Haitians to be deported. While Haiti has made advances spurred by international aid since the quake, the Caribbean nation remains one of the poorest in the world. More than 2.5 million people, roughly a quarter of the population, live on less than $1.23 a day, which authorities there consider extreme poverty. AP culled from MPNB Mr Olumide's Blog |
Posted: 21 Nov 2017 01:47 AM PST Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe should acknowledge the nation's "insatiable desire" for a leadership change and resign immediately, the recently fired vice president and likely successor to the 93-year-old leader said Tuesday. Emmerson Mnangagwa, who was dismissed earlier this month, also said in a statement that he will not return to Zimbabwe until "satisfied of my personal security," alleging that there had been plans to kill him. "The people of Zimbabwe have spoken with one voice and it is my appeal to President Mugabe that he should take heed of this clarion call and resign forthwith so that the country can move forward and preserve his legacy," Mnangagwa said.He confirmed that Mugabe has invited him to return "for a discussion" on the recent events. But "given the events that followed my dismissal I cannot trust my life in President Mugabe's hands." The ruling ZANU-PF party is demanding that Mugabe resign and wants Mnangagwa, a former longtime ally of the president, to replace him. culled from MPNB Mr Olumide's Blog |

Posted: 21 Nov 2017 01:42 AM PST US-Nigeria Legislative & Executive Leadership Forum, on Saturday November 18, in Washington DC, USA, showered huge encomiums on the chairman, Kazeem Royal Properties Ltd, Prince Kazeem Eletu-Odibo as "Most Outstanding Philanthropist in Nigeria" by the US-Nigeria Legislative & Executive Leadership Forum for his community achievement in human development capacity and philanthropy. As if that was not enough, he also bagged a United Nations ambassadorial title from the Convenant International University and Seminary. Having been conferred with an Honorary Doctorate Degree (Doctor Of Philosophy), he will now, henceforth, be reffered to as "Ambassador Dr Prince Kazeem Austin Eletu-Odibo" The awardee, having thanked his admirers and orgainzers of the event, via his official Facebook page, Kazeem Royal said: "Both recognitions are somewhat special as it reminds me how far God has brought me. It reminds me of those struggles and hustles. Much more, it reminds me that no situation is permanent. It may take time, but it won't always be dark. "So I want to encourage someone out there who is going through hard times. No condition is permanent. Destiny may be delayed, IT CAN NEVER BE DENIED! "I dedicate this awards to God Almighty for His Faithfulness, to my loving mother, to my family,to all Kazeem Royal Staff, to all my well wishers who came with me to America, to all who stood by me those days," he said. Read the Prince's full speech below: Dear Esteemed ladies and gentlemen, please permit me to stand on existing protocol. It is indeed an honour to express my profound gratitude to the organisers of this event who carefully selected me for this international community award. Today, reminds me again of my growing up. You probably would have seen in my profile that I was born into a royal family but it was unknown to me for many years. Hence, I had to do all kinds of menial jobs just to survive. I was only two years old when my father passed on and my mother took me to a suburb called AJEGUNLE (it means wealth is here) but it is indeed a paradox. However, as a child I had a strange belief that one day I would be wealthy but I couldn't tell how. I couldn't steal or cheat anyone for a living. I was just like every Nigerian child born into what I presumed was poverty and I wanted to have a great future. I attended a press conference in Lagos in respect of this meeting and I stated without mincing words that I am very much aware that people and or organisations receive awards because of their affluence but my case is different. I didn't pay for this. Instead, I believe that it was because of my little contributions that have been recognized. I have traveled thousands of kilometers, flew over several mountains, oceans, rivers, lands and cultures to a country many people wish to visit, truly God's own country. I am indeed honored by this kind gesture and I would like to accept this award as I trust it would further motivate me to do even much more. In conclusion, I want to dedicate this award to two categories of people. First to my lovely mother who raised me up single-handedly. And two, I dedicate this to every Nigerian child who has a dream that someday Nigeria, Africa will be a better place and the world at large. I want to say also to my Creator, thank you indeed and I want to draw as always some inspiration from the national slogan of the United States of America: In God, We Trust. In God, I trust. I will keep impacting many more lives positively as I journey through life. So, help me God. Thank you very much indeed. Prince Kazeem Austin Eletu Odibo culled from Olu famous Mr Olumide's Blog |

Go, Mugabe, Go by Reuben Abati | Mr Olumide's Blog Posted: 21 Nov 2017 01:07 AM PST Since August, I have been the anchorperson of a programme on television called ThisDay Live where we discuss political matters - local and global. The programme is available on Arise News TV at 6pm, 9pm and sometimes at midnight every Sunday. Two days ago, we discussed the situation in Zimbabwe, the elections in Anambra, Nigeria's decision to hire Malaysian experts at a cost of N485 million to figure out new pathways for Nigeria's economic growth (with all the experts in Nigeria oh!), the proposed expansion of President Buhari's cabinet, the burial of 26 teenage Nigerians by the Italian authorities without Nigeria showing up, the sale of Nigerians and other Africans into slavery in Libya… But our top story was Zimbabwe and the travails of a once-upon-a-time Comrade Robert Mugabe. We started the programme by joining the Arise News studio in London where our colleague Tham who has been on the Zimbabwean story provided all the updates. He had said that he thought that the Lagos studio was a little behind on the story, because at that point, there were clear indications that Robert Mugabe had been persuaded to resign and he thought that would happen in a matter of hours, because television cameras were already being set up and Mugabe, having been expelled from the ruling party, along with his Lady Macbeth wife- the Gucci Grace, was bound to throw in the towel. I engaged Tham and my last question to him was: Is it certain that Mugabe would resign, or he would have to be impeached? I paraphrase of course. But Tham was sure, he was certain that the matter would not require impeachment proceedings, and that Mugabe was sure to resign and allow Zimbabwe to move ahead. His optimism was misplaced, and I do not blame Tham for his optimism. We all have been very optimistic that the drama of Zimbabwe had reached a certain end, but the reality is that the coup plotters of Zimbabwe are proving to be the nicest coup plotters ever in the history of that enterprise. The more we hear about Zimbabwe, the more it appears that the military and the ZANU-PF hierarchy who want Robert Mugabe out of the way, are not really sure of what means to employ to achieve their objective. This must be the most uncertain, the most diffident bid for power ever, and it is a clear illustration of the extent of Robert Mugabe's hold on power in that unfortunate country. Majority of the people who want Mugabe out of power may not like his wife, the typist turned mistress, turned wife, turned Lady Macbeth, turned power-seeker, but they remember Mugabe's role in the history of their nation – he fought for independence, he defied the colonialists and the imperialists, but he then became a despot, muzzling the opposition, killing off any form of dissent, the once revered revolutionary soon became a woman-wrapper, and in his later years, a parody of his old self. Those who want him out of power are his own associates, members of a party he co-founded, not the opposition, and so they treat their elderly comrade with too much love. These coup-plotters are therefore behaving as if they are afraid to hurt Mugabe. He is so ensconced in their psyche, they would rather not hurt him, because he is so central to their collective reckoning and history. The Zimbabwe military has been treading so carefully it does not even want to use the word "coup". I believe that this is not necessarily out of the fear of international backlash – the international community would be glad to see Mugabe fall- all the issued statements are at best symbolic diplomatese. Mugabe is the oldest President in the world and a signal nuisance with his off-key speeches, falling spells, despotism and soporific appearances on the global stage. At 93, he has nothing to offer anymore, but the man has since declared that he is determined to remain in office till the age of 100, or interpretively, die in office. A coup against such a man would attract the usual scripted responses but the global feeling would be one of actual relief. Leaders like Mugabe sometimes put international consensus to threat. Anyhow, the characters in charge of the current situation in Zimbabwe not only put Mugabe under house arrest, they have since then been going to him to pay homage. Two days after the military announced their intervention, the leaders went to visit Mugabe at home. He later showed up at a convocation ceremony, where he showed absolutely no signs of distress. One of the graduands was in fact the wife of the Zimbabwe Chief of Defence Forces! When Mugabe addressed the nation on Sunday, he was serenaded by the same people who want him out of the way, with one of them even helping him to turn the pages of an incoherent speech. The so-called change-agents of Zimbabwe are actually not change agents at all. What is going on in Zimbabwe is not a revolution; it is a re-arrangement of the power nexus within the ruling party. This is all at the end of the day about Grace Mugabe. The liberation veterans within the ruling party, who are aligned with the ousted former Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa resent the rise to influence and power and the threat of further rise of Robert Mugabe's wife, the 52-year old Grace Mugabe. They needed to stop the flow of her opportunism: her plan to capture the leader and capture the country with nothing more than female power. I agree that it is important and expedient to stop Grace Mugabe from turning an entire country into what is currently known in Nigeria as "the other room". Having achieved that objective, and Robert Mugabe having reassured them, and they assuming that by taking leadership of the party from Mugabe and bringing back Mnangagwa, that the revolution has been saved, the elders of the events of the last week in Zimbabwe may end up advertising their own naivety. The rigmarole, indeed the entertainment, has gone on for too long. The speech given by Robert Mugabe Sunday night showed that Mugabe is defiant. He is unwilling to resign or step down. He understands that the Sixth schedule of the Constitution creates its own special roadblocks if a "supposedly elected" President must be removed from office. If care is not taken, Robert Mugabe will outsmart those who want him out of power and we could have a tragic situation in that country. The old man of Zimbabwe politics is still trying to take charge, postponing the evil day and even after his removal from the leadership of the party, he wants to preside over the next meeting of the ZANU-PF. Here is Mugabe behaving like that proverbial, aged uncle in the village who keeps defying death. Each time he falls ill and the children and grandchildren begin to prepare for his funeral, he would suddenly wake up again, sometimes after his death has been announced and funeral arrangements have been made. The family got trapped in the endless funeral arrangements, until someone came up with the idea that the Oracle should be consulted to find out the mystery of the old man's repeated Lazarus-like existence. The Oracle's striking revelation was that the old man had a charm, a ring on the big toe of his left leg, and until and except that ring is removed, the man may never die. What the change-seekers of Zimbabwe should do is to remove that ring around Mugabe's thumb toe on the left leg. It is none other than the respect and sympathy that the authors of the recent process still have for Mugabe. Left to the ZANU-PF leadership and the military, they'd rather have Mugabe die in office. What they cannot stand is the impunity of his overreaching wife, the Jezebel called Grace Mugabe. The turning point came when Grace turned her gaze on the liberation veterans and began to eliminate them starting with former VP Emmerson. The liberation wing of the ZANU-PF could no longer tolerate the rise of Grace Mugabe's G-40 and their bid for power. Grace Mugabe is Robert Mugabe's nemesis. She is the Delilah to his Samson. When Nigeria's President Muhammadu Buhari told an international audience that his wife belongs to the sitting room, the kitchen and the other room, we all accused him of misogyny, but in far away Zimbabwe, Mugabe is making Buhari look like a man of wisdom. Not a few world leaders have been destroyed by their wives: Lucy Kibaki, the wife of Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki was so powerful, her husband openly deferred to her in public. In Africa's patriarchal system, a President's wife behaving like she has her husband on a leash, is bound to ignite crisis. Grace Mugabe is said to be in a fit of hysteria. Forty-one years younger than the husband she married by stabbing another husband in the back, Grace Mugabe will never be forgotten as a case study for the anatomy of female power. On his own, Mugabe, going through a process of anagnorisis and devastating catharsis, wants to hold on to power by all means. Sit-tight African leaders and despots never want to leave. Idi Amin of Uganda didn't want to go. Yahya Jammeh, the most recent example, tried every possible trick to prolong his stay in office. In Egypt, it took a people's revolution to push Hosni Mubarak out. Mugabe is going through the same course of defiance. He needs to be reminded that the people are the real Oracle of democracy. The game is up. The genie is out of the bottle. In 37 years, the ordinary people of Zimbabwe, who have majorly not known any leader other than the old man, have never gone out in protest to reject him, not even when he brutalized the opposition, not even when he killed hundreds of thousands of Ndebeles, but now the people have found their voice. They are defying Mugabe. They want him out. He has thus lost legitimacy and influence. His mystique is gone. His power is vanishing. Without power, a man of power is nothing but a shell. Mugabe has reportedly rejected every option that he has been given: resignation, a life in exile, or retirement within the country, with full immunity. He is not sure. He is trying to buy time. The truth is Mugabe has been caged. He is afraid of tomorrow. He is scared. It is good to see the hunter in the role of the hunted. He does not deserve our pity. Hopefully, other sit-tight African leaders who imagine themselves to be monarchs rather than leaders would learn from the travails of former Comrade Robert Mugabe. In Togo, Equitorial Guinea, Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, and Cameroon, and elsewhere in Africa, sitting Presidents are behaving like monarchs. The rings on their toes would also have to be removed by the people, in order to fully consolidate the democratic dispensation in Africa. The international community must not allow Zimbabwe to continue to drift. The uncertainty that lingers in that country, if allowed to continue, could result in greater chaos and instability. The Military and the ZANU-PF have done apparently their best so far to push Robert Mugabe, but the man has refused to jump. The international community has the wherewithal to make him jump. It must be made clear to him in no uncertain terms that the game is up. It is over. The Zimbabwe parliament should be encouraged to impeach Robert Mugabe. Fears of a possible deluge in a Zimbabwe without Mugabe may be overstretched. Things are bad enough as they are in that country, with inflation at 50%, a comatose economy and widespread hardship. Mugabe's exit should guarantee only one outcome: an opportunity to rebuild a battered country and a traumatized citizenry. That real change may not come from a compromised ZANU-PF and so-called rent-collecting liberation veterans, but from a new beginning in which Zimbabwe frees itself from the Banquo's ghost of Mugabe's misrule and an entitlement class parading itself as revolutionaries. culled from MPNB Mr Olumide's Blog |

Lagos Hospital Holds Mother & Newborn Baby For 4 Months Over Unpaid Bills Posted: 21 Nov 2017 12:37 AM PST The birth of a baby should be a thing of joy. But for Blessing Agbo and her live-in lover, Chibugo Duru, the event has brought stress of all kinds. For more than four months after Blessing was delivered of a baby boy through caesarean section in a Lagos hospital, God Cures Hospital, she had yet to be discharged over a bill of N215,000. It was gathered that the baby's father, Duru, had already abandoned both mother and child at the medical facility in the Ilogbo, Ojo area of Lagos State. The 27-year-old man, who spoke with Punch on phone on Monday, said he left Agbo and their baby because he could not raise the bill charged by the hospital for the operation. He said he had no means of raising the funds having lost his job as a truck driver, adding that efforts to seek the understanding of the hospital management were abortive. Although they had agreed to marry, Duru had yet to pay Blessing Agbo's bride price. He said, "Sometime in June, my lover went into labour while I was on a business trip in Calabar, Cross River State. I was also called that she had developed complications and had been rushed from where she had her antenatal care to the private hospital. "The hospital called me that they needed N245,000 for an operation and I begged them to reduce the charge, but they said it was not negotiable. I asked them to go ahead and that I would look for the money when I returned. "They did the operation and it was successful. I paid a deposit of N30,000. Shortly afterwards, I lost my job because there was nobody to assist me in taking care of my baby. I was the one running around for both mother and child and I could not go to work. "I begged one of their doctors to be patient with me because I had lost my job, but he refused. "I called the hospital's managing director and asked him to involve the police in knowing my address because I would not run away with their money. He also refused." The Imo State indigene alleged that his siblings, who were initially visiting the baby at the hospital, stopped coming after getting threats from the hospital management over the bill. He alleged that sometime in September, he was detained by the hospital while on a visit to his girlfriend and baby. "They locked me up and said I must produce their money. I was embarrassed. Because of that experience, anytime I want to go there, I become scared. At a point, they threatened me that they would sell my baby over the bill. None of my relatives go there again, because they have threatened them. I don't know what to do. I never knew she would need a surgery to give birth," he added. However, the hospital management denied the allegations, saying it never threatened to sell the baby to raise money for the bill. The Administrative Manager of the hospital, Busayo Olorunnisola, said Agbo was admitted and delivered of the baby on compassionate grounds because no deposit was made before the surgery. She said, "We have been looking for the father of the baby. We have been feeding the woman for the past three months. He was not in Lagos when she was brought in. He was called on the telephone that the girl needed urgent surgery and he gave his consent, promising to pay as soon as he returned. "He didn't return until after six days when he paid N15,000 and left. Two weeks later, he returned and promised to pay the balance. He paid an additional N15,000. "After a fight with the girl at the hospital on September 11, he came and signed an undertaking not to abandon her again. The girl had held him for abandoning her at the hospital and they were brought to my office where he promised never to abandon her again. Since then, he has stopped coming and the girl has been relying on the generosity of the hospital, nurses and other members of staff." She said the hospital had decided to forgo the N1,500 daily utility fee Agbo should have been charged for the time she spent at the hospital, adding that they were only demanding the balance of the surgery bill. "The problem we have in this neighbourhood is that everybody thinks once you come in for treatment (at our hospital), we leave you without charges, even after undergoing surgeries, and it is something we want to stop. It's becoming a norm. The same scenario keeps recurring and after a while, we usually let them go," she added. Agbo, who also spoke with Punch, said Duru had yet to pay her bride price, which made her parents to abandon her. She said, "We are not married yet because he has not paid my bride price. I was living with my sister when we started dating before he impregnated me. When I asked him to see my parents and pay the bride price, he promised to do it in December. I have been begging people for food at the hospital because he is also not bringing any food for me." The 21-year-old Benue State indigene appealed for help to get discharged from the hospital, saying Duru did not care for her. culled from Olu famous Mr Olumide's Blog |
