Wild elephant kills man in Nepal | Mr Olumide's Blog Posted: 01 Nov 2017 03:39 AM PDT A wild elephant in Nepal killed a 35-year-old man who attempted to chase it away, Police said on Wednesday. The man was among a group of villagers who tried to chase away a herd of four wild elephants in the village of Bhadrapur in the country's south-east, said senior police officer Bishnu KC. "The elephants were crossing a road and were entering the forest. One of them turned back and crushed the man to death," KC told dpa. He said the area was part of a corridor used by wild elephants that ventured into human settlements during the harvest season between October and November. Conflicts between wild animals and humans have increased in recent years in southern Nepal's buffer zones, areas which lied between forests and human settlements. In July, a 58-year-old man was mauled to death by a wild elephant near a wildlife reserve in south-east Nepal. culled from MPNB Mr Olumide's Blog |

Just In: Court dismisses Diezani’s application to return to Nigeria | Mr Olumide's Blog Posted: 01 Nov 2017 03:39 AM PDT A Federal High Court Sitting in Lagos has dismissed an application by a former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs Diezani Alison-Madueke urging it to compel the Attorney General of the Federation, Mr Abubakar Malami, to bring her back to Nigeria to defend a criminal charge bordering on alleged laundering of N450 million. Justice Rilwan Aikawa in a ruling on the issue agreed with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) that the application is misconceived and amounts to "a misuse of the court process". According to Channels Tv, the court also held that having not been listed as a defendant in the charge, there is no offence yet being made against the Former Minister and she is "merely crying wolf where there is none". According to Justice Aikawa, Mrs Alison-Madueke did not also deny the claims of the EFCC that she is currently on bail in the UK where she is being investigated for several financial crimes and her filing of the application was merely a ploy to escape justice in the U.K. The judge ruled that his court will not be used to achieve this aim. In the final analysis, he declared that Mrs Alison-Madueke's application lacks merit and is accordingly dismissed. The court has proceeded with the trial of the case. culled from MPNB Mr Olumide's Blog |

Posted: 01 Nov 2017 02:39 AM PDT A newlywed woman has been charged with murder after a poisoned milk drink she allegedly planned to give to her husband killed at least 15 members of her extended family. Aasia Bibi, 21, was forced into an arranged marriage in September with Amjad Akram, 25. Two months into the marriage in Pakistan, she tried to flee to her parents' house, but they forcibly took her back. Bibi then allegedly poisoned a glass of milk to murder her husband. After he refused to drink it, her mother-in-law used it to make a batch of Lassi and served it to 27 members of the family, the UK Independent reports. A total of 15 people died while 12 others are reportedly still in critical condition. The exact number of deaths and whether it includes children is disputed. A senior police officer said: "Aasia was forced to marry Amjad against her will."She was not happy and came back to her parents house after a few days into marriage but her family forcibly sent her back to her in-laws' house.Bibi reportedly first claimed that a lizard had fallen into the milk, poisoning it. "But she confessed her role in the custody," said police. Police have arrested Bibi, her lover and her aunt, who are suspected to have a role in the incident. Bibi has denied the allegations to reporters, claiming her lover gave her the poison and she did not use it, and that she also refused to marry him. culled from MPNB Mr Olumide's Blog |

VP Osinbajo Calls For Commitment To Build A New Nigeria Posted: 01 Nov 2017 01:55 AM PDT Vice President Prof. Yemi Osinbajo on Tuesday challenged Nigerians to rededicate themselves toward the building a nation they would be proud to bequeath to unborn generations. "We must make sacrifices toward building a nation of our dream. It certainly cannot be easy, but it is very possible,"Osinbajo said at the official inauguration of a 10,000 capacity ecumenical centre in Yenagoa. The centre was built by the Bayelsa Government and dedicated by Pastor Enoch Adeboye of RCCG. He urged Nigerians to support government's efforts to rid the nation of all forms of corruption, saying that the menace had stalled national growth over the years. Represented by Seyi Malono, the State House Chaplain, Osinbajo said that Nigeria was in dire need of strong men and women committed to moving it forward. "We are focused on experiencing the sweetness and joy of child birth; the only thing that can hold us back is corruption. We must deal with it decisively because it affects all institutions," he said. culled from Olu famous Mr Olumide's Blog |
Controversy Over Suicide of OAU Female Student Posted: 01 Nov 2017 01:55 AM PDT The suicide of a 16-year-old student of Microbiology Department at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, Miss Mercy Afolaranmi, has continued to generate ripples in the institution. What actually led to her death? Afolaranmi, who was in 100-level, reportedly took rat poison on Thursday because of her poor grade in a compulsory course in Chemistry. It was gathered that the deceased scored E grade in CHM 101, which is compulsory for every student in the Faculty of Science. Some students said she first withdrew from her close friends before she eventually took her life. One of the students, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told Punch that Afolaranmi became sad when she saw that her grade was poor. She said, "She first became distressed because she got an E in CHM 101 and eventually committed suicide . We got a call that a student took poison and she was taken to a hospital. Those who took her to the hospital were told that she took rat poison mixed with a black substance. "She died on Thursday before her parents arrived at the hospital. The death has thrown students in her department into mourning." But some students also said the female student did not kill herself because of the poor grade as being speculated by many of her colleagues. One of the students, who identified himself as Feyi, said the incident should be properly investigated to know why she killed herself; "if she indeed killed herself." One of the workers at the OAU Health Centre, who also declined to be named, said that the girl was not brought to the centre because she lived in the town and not on campus. She said, "I am sure her death might have been prevented if she lived on campus because her colleagues would have seen her and discouraged her from killing herself." The university's Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olanrewaju, confirmed the incident. He, however, said the reason for the alleged suicide was not clear. The PRO said, "We really don't know what caused her death. There is this rumour that she committed suicide because of poor grade. She was a 100-level student. We don't know what happened. Efforts to speak to the Police PRO, Mrs. Folasade Odoro, was unsuccessful. Calls to her phone rang out and she had yet to respond to a text message sent to her phone. culled from Olu famous Mr Olumide's Blog |
Jonathan Opens Up: "Why I Don't Want To Testify For Metuh" Posted: 01 Nov 2017 01:55 AM PDT An application filed by former President Goodluck Jonathan before the Federal High Court in Abuja has revealed further reasons why he wants to be excused from appearing as a witness in defence of a former National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Olisa Metuh. Metuh is standing trial on charges involving, among others, the N400m he (Metuh) received from the Office of the National Security Adviser in 2014. The former President in his motion challenging the subpoena issued on him, stated that with "with several attempts by some persons in the current dispensation, to harass, intimidate and rubbish" his reputation and that of his wife, the witness summon issued on him upon Metuh's request was a ploy to drag his name in the mud. He also argued in the motion filed on his behalf by his lawyer, Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN), on Monday, that his testimony being sought in Metuh's trial, would not only amount to an invasion of his right to privacy, it would also expose him to a criminal charge, penalty or forfeiture. He recalled that there had been attempts to seize the properties and bank accounts of his wife, Patience, her relatives and her pet non-governmental organisation. These are contained in an affidavit, filed in support of the motion filed on behalf of Jonathan by Ozekhome on Monday, seeking an order to set aside the subpoena ordering him to appear in court as Metuh's witness. As an alternative prayer, the motion sought an order directing Metuh to deposit with the court for Jonathan, the sum of N1bn to cover travelling expenses for himself and his security personnel from his home town, Otuoke in Bayelsa State, to Abuja. A litigation secretary in Ozekhome's law firm, Mr. Usman Salihu, who deposed to the affidavit filed in support of the motion, said he spoke with Jonathan through a phone call in the presence of the lead counsel, Ozekhome, at about 10am on October 29 (Sunday). Salihu stated in the affidavit that although Jonathan had not been served with the subpoena, he but had read about it in the media. He stated that Jonathan was shocked on learning of the witness summon issued against him at Metuh's behest. He also denied knowing anything about the charges preferred against Metuh by the EFCC. He stated, "That he (Jonathan) has read in the media of a witness summons issued by this honourable court requiring him to come. before the court for the purpose of testifying before the court. "That there have been several attempts by some persons in the current dispensation to harass, intimidate and rubbish his reputation and that of his wife. "That several attempts have been made to attach or seize the accounts and properties of his wife, her relatives and her pet, NGO. Most of the cases filed for and against such moves are currently pending before various courts across Nigeria. "That when he read about the summons issued on him at the behest of the 2nd respondent, Olisa Metuh, he was shocked as he verily believes strongly that it forms part of the ploy to drag his name into the mire. "That he knows nothing pertaining to the seven counts for which Olisa Metuh, the first defendant in the charge is standing trial and consequently, has absolutely nothing to say as a witness before the court in respect thereof. "That he verily believes that the evidence sought to be obtained from him will amount to an invasion of his personal right to privacy and family life, as guaranteed by the Nigerian constitution. "That he verily believes that the evidence sought from him, is likely to expose him to a criminal charge, penalty or forfeiture." He further argued that the subpoena was vague and applied for and obtained on frivolous grounds. Salihu added that the subpoena was obtained in bad faith as it was meant to embarrass the person of the applicant. He argued that Metuh was not a personal aide or an appointee of the applicant herein and so could not have dealt with the President directly under any circumstance to warrant the invitation of the applicant to testify in the charge. Salihu also claimed that there was no nexus between the applicant and Metuh and the charge for which Metuh was standing trial. He also said he knew nothing about the charges preferred against Metuh. At the Tuesday's proceedings, Metuh's lawyer, Mr. Emeka Etiaba (SAN), told Justice Okon Abang that his client's request to call Jonathan as witness had been "misconstrued outside this court." He said pained by it, his client would sit with the legal team to review the motion filed by Ozekhome on behalf of Jonathan in order to take a position on it. culled from Olu famous Mr Olumide's Blog |
