Talks About 2nd Term For Buhari Sickening – Soyinka

Posted: 12 Sep 2017 03:32 AM PDT

Nobel laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka has expressed disgust with emerging debates on re-election by some politicians in the country, when the current government hasn't even done much.

Some northern governors on the platform of APC and some allies of President Muhammadu Buhari had on Saturday backed the President for a second term.
The declaration came on the heels of the open declaration of support of the Minister of Women Affairs, Aisha Alhassan for the presidential bid of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, who the minister declared as "our president in 2019".
But Soyinka is not amused by debates going on on the political permutations ahead of the 2019.

The Nobel laureate, while speaking on Monday, in Lagos,  noted that the current administration had barely gone halfway, wondering why people were already planning to fill political positions.

He spoke with some journalists after a press briefing to unveil the second batch of students departing Nigeria for Lebanon on Tuesday for the Study Abroad In Lebanon programme.

When asked a question on the current debate about a second term for Buhari and if he would endorse the President for a second term, Soyinka stated, "Why are we talking about second term for heaven's sake? I don't understand this. I refuse to be part of that discussion. I absolutely refuse to be part of the discussion.''

On performance of the current administration, he said there were "yawning gaps", noting that an average Nigerian was now less secure than he was few years ago.

He said, "Take simple security for instance. The average citizen feels less secure now than he did a few years ago; that is evident. When people talk about state police, there are reasons for it. When they talk about bringing policing right down to the community level, they know what they are talking about. This is also part and parcel of reconstruction or reconfiguration.

"The economy, there is a big question about it right now. Fortunately, everybody admits that we went through a very bad patch. Right now, it is a question of have we come out of it or not or there is no question at all.

"The past few years have been years of real internal economic disaster for the average citizen.''

OPC Men Abduct Pastor, Torture Him Over Missing N80k

Posted: 12 Sep 2017 03:32 AM PDT

A prophet with the Celestial Church of Christ, Morogbo parish 1, Badagry, Lagos, Moses Oloyede, has been tortured by some members of Oodua People's Congress over an alleged missing N80,000.

It was learnt that the victim was flogged with a horsewhip and tortured with a knife by the men, who told the Abeokuta, Ogun State indigene that he must confess to the theft of the money.

The case was said to have been reported to policemen from the Area K Command, who arrested the leader of the group and the person that owned the money.

According to Punch, Oloyede's travail started after he went to pray for the woman who owned the money, identified only as Maria, at her aunt's house in Agumo, in the Oko Afo area.

After the prayer on Wednesday, August 30, Oloyede, who was also the choir master of his church, was called on the telephone that N80,000 had gone missing in the house.

He told Punch that he thought his host was joking until he was abducted on the church premises by the OPC members who came with locally-made guns.

He said, "Maria is a member of my parish where I serve as a prophet and choir master. I had prayed for her several times, including when she needed a job. She got a lucrative job in the Lekki area of Lagos State.

"As appreciation, she voluntarily contributes to my seminars, crusades and other events of my ministry. About two weeks ago, she called and said I should come to pray for her at her aunt's house in Oko Afo.

"I usually don't go to minister to people in their houses. But due to her financial commitment to God's work, I decided to honour her. She came to pick me at the bus stop around 5pm on that Wednesday."

He said after the prayer, Maria saw him off to where he took a motorcycle back home.

The 23-year-old pastor said that after about four hours, his host called him on the telephone and said she was looking for N80,000.

"She said a 13-year-old girl that was lying on the floor in the room claimed that she saw me searching bags in the house.

"I wondered how I could do such a thing and I asked her if she told me about any money. She said I was a prophet and that I could have seen the money with my spiritual eyes. I felt embarrassed and ended the call," he said.

Oloyede said his mother called him at the church to say that some people had been threatening her over the missing money.

"On Sunday, I saw two people in our church at Morogbo. They said they were OPC members and that they wanted to interview me at the bus stop over the missing money. They equally claimed that Maria was also at the bus stop. I decided to follow them.

"I mounted the motorcycle they brought and we left. However, as soon as the motorcycle moved, I saw four other motorcycles coming behind us with many OPC members; and they displayed guns, charms and cutlasses. When we got to the bus stop, they didn't stop. That was when I started sensing trouble.

"When we got to Oko Afo, I met their leader, Alagbada. I was put in their cell. They tied my hands and legs and started beating me. They used a knife dripping with hot palm oil to torture me. They also used sticks, horsewhips and bottles on me. They said I must confess to the crime," he said.

It was learnt that the OPC leader called the leader of the parish, who also informed some members of the church about the incident.

The OPC members, who reportedly put a video camera before Oloyede, also put the call to his church leader on speaker mode.

The pastor said he nearly died as the torture went on for over four hours.

"They called my church leader and elders on the telephone that they should listen to my confessional statements. They had tortured me from 6pm to around 11pm. I didn't know when I started saying I did what I didn't do," he said.

The OPC men were said to have asked the victim to bail his phone with N4,000. Out of the N4,500 balance in his bank account, he reportedly transferred N3,000 to them, while his mother supported with an additional N1,000.

After getting the phone, the men also demanded the payment of N95,000, with N80,000 as a refund of the stolen money and N15,000 for bail.

The victim said he reported the case to the Area K Police Command as the Lagos Commissioner of Police, Edgal Imohimi, ordered the arrest of those involved in the torture.

The police reportedly arrested the leader of the OPC, Alagbada, and the complainant, Maria.

"Maria said she believed I took the money when she went to get a bottled water to entertain me during the visit.

"However, when the police asked for the whereabouts of the 13-year-old that reportedly saw me, she said the girl had been taken to Ajase where she was schooling. Her aunt had also fled to Ajase. They had so far refused to bring her. It all appeared like a set up. I later realised that Alagbada was Maria's uncle," Oloyede said.

Lagos Police PRO, ASP Olarinde Famous-Cole, confirmed the incident, adding that the case had been transferred to the CSIID for further investigation.

I Will Fight Corruption Better Than Buhari – Atiku

Posted: 12 Sep 2017 03:02 AM PDT

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has vowed to fight corruption like never before if given the chance to preside over Nigeria's affairs as President.

Atiku also challenged those he described as his self-righteous political enemies to either prove his alleged corrupt activities or keep quiet.

The APC chieftain said this during a facility tour of the new ultra-modern Yaliam Press Limited in Jabi area of Abuja on Monday.

This was contained in a statement by his Media Office in Abuja.

Atiku was quoted as saying, "he would fight corruption like never before if he is given the opportunity to preside over the affairs of the country."

The former Vice-President said, "It is sickening to continue to regurgitate allegations of corruption against me by people who have failed to come forward with a single shred of evidence of my misconduct while in office."

He noted that people who lacked initiative, personal resourcefulness and ideas about wealth creation, "always assume that a man cannot build himself without stealing."

"People who are bereft of ideas about entrepreneurial spirit always think that everyone else is a thief just like them," he added.

Atiku said it was morally offensive for people who despise honest labour to become judges in the courts of public opinion.

He said that though he had not been convicted of corruption by any court in the country or elsewhere, his political enemies had been parading a fake morality to fool gullible Nigerians.

He was equally quoted as saying, "Despite previous desperate efforts to link me with corruption, the William Jefferson trial in the United States ended in 2009 without indicting me or linking me to corrupt activities."

He said, "If Atiku is a thief merely because of his resourcefulness and successful investments, my political enemies should tell Nigerians the sources of their own stupendous wealth."

The former Vice-President added, "I will shock everyone because I believe that I will fight corruption like never before."

Man goes to jail for teaching Islam online | Mr Olumide's Blog

A member of a Muslim minority group has been sentenced to two years in a Chinese prison after forming online discussions groups to teach about Islam.

The official website China Judgments Online said Huang Shike was arrested in 2016 in Xinjiang province, three months after forming a discussion group about Muslim worship on the messaging app WeChat.

He taught about the Quran, Islam's holy book, in another WeChat discussion group.

More than 100 people were members of each group, the website said. Huang is a member of the Hui minority.

The discussion groups "disturbed normal religious activity" and violated laws about using the internet to discuss religion, the website said.

Chinese authorities have steadily tightened controls on Xinjiang, where they believe radical Islamic thought has infiltrated the region.

Female Lecturer in S*x-for-Grade Saga... sacked by Ebonyi State University

Posted: 12 Sep 2017 01:52 AM PDT

Male lecturers are doing theirs, female lecturers are joining the train. Sigh! The management of Ebonyi State University has wielded the big stick against a female lecturer who was reported for s*xually harrassing a student.

The female lecturer in the Faculty of Education was sacked by the university's Council as deterrent for others participating in the act.

Accoriding to The Sun, students have been raising alarm over increased spate of s*xual harassment and exploitation meted to them by some lecturers in the institution before the incident.

Some of the students told The Sun that some lecturers in the university demanded s*x, and in some cases, financial gratification before they could pass their courses.

Also, a male lecturer in the Department of History and International Relations of the institution, was suspended by the management of the institution over alleged s*xual misconduct with female students and other unethical practices.

The suspended lecturer was allegedly in the habit of seeking s*xual and financial gratification from students before they could pass the course handled by him.

Some students who spoke to The Sun lamented that the ugly trend was rapidly increasing. They said that it was now "normal among students". They lamented that they pay between N10,000 and N30,000 or offer s*x for them to pass certain courses in the school.

When contacted on phone, Vice Chancellor of the varsity, Prof. Francis Idike, confirmed the incident. He said that although the menace of s*x-for-marks was rampant in the school, his administration is making spirited effort to sanitize the system.

7 Truths You Should Know About Heaven

Posted: 12 Sep 2017 01:27 AM PDT

Call 'em hard: the death of a loved one, medical conditions, wayward children, relocation, weather catastrophes, divorce, an unexpected job change, or financial difficulties. Many of us will face these challenges. Hello season of "hard".

Nearly two years ago, I faced my father's death. Grief shook my world for weeks, months even. If it weren't for heaven, I'm not certain how I would have managed.

Thoughts of heaven - my dad's entrance there and the hope awaiting - kept me grounded during that trial. Eternity with God offers stability when life gets hard.

When considering heaven, we invite hope into our situation...
The impossible suddenly swipes across our screen as possible – all thanks to Jesus. Let's grab 7 truths about heaven to cling to.

1. Jesus Paid it All So Heaven Could be Possible for Us
Jesus' words, "It is finished," ring clear. The battle raged. The price has been paid. Heaven awaits.

When we consider the path Jesus traversed, and that He willingly journeyed for each one of us due to His unfathomable, overflowing bundle of love, heaven's beauty shines. Whether our lives appear good, bad, or ugly – His work concerning heaven is finished.

When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, "It is finished." He bowed his head, and gave up his spirit.
John 19:30 (WEB)

2. There is an Open Invitation to Heaven
The word "all" rings beautiful in this context. Our Father looks with wishful eyes to you, me, our neighbor, a stranger across the way, and even those sitting half an earth away. Regardless of our past or current situation, whether hard trials or tribulations, "all" still counts. Our Father invites all of us to enter heaven. Have you accepted the invitation?

The Lord is not slow concerning his promise, as some count slowness; but is patient with us, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
2 Peter 3:9 (WEB)

3. We Will Feel at Home in Heaven
Have you ever traveled? Maybe it's for business or pleasure – or perhaps a quick journey to school. There's something about coming home, something about dropping onto the sofa and plopping feet up on the coffee table. It's our space. We're comfortable and relaxed. Nothing replaces it.

We breathe and live here on earth for now, but heaven is our home. As believers in Christ, our true citizenship situates there. Our Savior awaits. The best is yet to come.

For our citizenship is in heaven, from where we also wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ;
- Phil. 3:20 (WEB)

4. There is No Death in Heaven
Death stinks. It's that simple. If you've watched a loved one die, you understand.

Man's sin invited death to the party on earth. But Our God assures death will never set foot in heaven. Death is denied. Now, that's reason for a hallelujah!

He has swallowed up death forever! The Lord Yahweh will wipe away tears from off all faces. He will take the reproach of his people away from off all the earth, for Yahweh has spoken it.
IS 25:8 (WEB)

5. There is No Trace of Evil in Heaven
Consider a movie, one with the classic good versus evil thread, and its characters. How do you feel when your favorite, well-loved, clings-to-good lead character fights diligently against the wiles and underhandedness of the evil one? Most of us have an internal unction sitting in the stands, cheering loud and clear for our hero, longing for the demise of every ounce of evil in the situation.

Regardless of what the world catapults at us or the words or actions others may plop upon us, heaven, like our movie hero, remains void of evil. No lies, no abominations, and nothing profane admitted, only those whose names are written in the Lamb's book of life. How's that for hope?

There will in no way enter into it anything profane, or one who causes an abomination or a lie, but only those who are written in the Lamb's book of life.
Rev. 21:27 (WEB)

6. Jesus Has Prepared a Place for Us in heaven
Scratch the picture of Jesus harboring barrels of food underground. Our Savior stands as a prepper, but of the heavenly kind. A place awaits for all who accept His invitation. Rest assured.

In my Father's house are many homes. If it weren't so, I would have told you. I am going to prepare a place for you. If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and will receive you to myself; that where I am, you may be there also. Where I go, you know, and you know the way."
John 14:2-4 (WEB)

7. There Will be No Pain in Heaven
Stuffing tears is hard business. After all, who likes the resulting sore throat and headache? Regardless of how many droplets we shed or hide in our hard season, heaven offers a safe place void of crying and the hurtful thrust behind it. Now, that's my kind of place! Yours too?

He will wipe away from them every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; neither will there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain, any more. The first things have passed away." Rev. 21:4 (WEB)

No doubt about it, heaven and hope stand arm-in-arm. How about looping ours with theirs and clinging tightly to the hope of heaven as we traverse life?

A student of Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo, Oluwaseun Mary Olaniyan who escaped from the kidnappers' den has narrated how she found her way out.

Olaniyan, a history student said she was kidnapped by four men in a vehicle painted in the state taxi colour at about 6.30pm outside the main gate of the institution.

"I boarded the taxi cab alongside a lady at the same location. Two of them were going to Yaba in Ondo city.

"As soon as I boarded the vehicle, I became unconscious. I later found myself in a building located inside a thick forest.
"We were six in the hands of the captors who fed us only with water. We saw strange men coming in a jeep vehicle to collect something we suspected to be human flesh which was concealed in a cellophane bag.
"My escape from the hands of the kidnappers was divine. It was while they were quarrelling that I took the opportunity to escape alongside others into the bush.
"I trekked inside the forest until I got to Ile-Oluji/Ipetu Ijesa road where I met a lady and asked for direction to Ondo town. The lady told me I was very close to Ile-Oluji. When I got to Igbo Oja, I made efforts to reach my mother on her phone.
"I contacted my mother. My father immediately called me and I informed him that I had reached Itanla junction along Ondo/Akure highway."

A dog  mauled its owner to death after eating crack cocaine.

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier named Major was the equivalent of eight times the human drug drive limit when he latched onto Mario Perivoitos's face and neck moments after his owner took part in a BBC documentary.

Mario, 41, had been filming with a camera crew for the BBC programme Drugs Map Britain when he fell into an epileptic fit and was attacked on his bed.

Nicholas Carmichael, an expert in veterinary toxicology, revealed that samples of cocaine and morphine had been discovered in Major's urine.

The exact reading and measurement of cocaine was not stated but Mr Carmichael said:
"It is very likely that this dog had consumed drugs, probably eaten them.
"They become very excited and agitated, it is highly more likely that this attack happened because this dog had taken cocaine."In my experience with Staffordshire Bull Terriers if they think they are in a dominant position its response must have been to attack."
He added:
"The dog was eight times the drug drive limit.
"The dog had clearly taken it and, whether it had eaten it or taken it in by smoke, it is likely to have been a factor in the dog's behaviour."In his conclusion he said: "Mr Perivoitos was taking part in a documentary about illegal drugs, having returned to his home at 10.17pm consumed a quantity of cocaine before becoming unwell.
"It is likely that he was experiencing an epileptic shock which caused the dog to nip his face before biting his neck.
"The film crew telephoned an ambulance whilst attempting to get the dog off Mr Perivoitos.
"It is likely that the dog had consumed cocaine by eating it and it is likely that this was an additional factor in the dog's behaviour."Mr Perivoitos suffered serious injuries and was taken to a major trauma hospital and died shortly after midnight."

Detective chief inspector Luke Marks, who brought no criminal charges in the case, told the court that Major was due to be destroyed.

He said: "The dog was taken to a secure police storage facility, it was due to be destroyed but I do not know if it has been."

3 Things To Do When You're Struggling

Posted: 12 Sep 2017 12:22 AM PDT

When the blame on myself became too much, I began putting it on someone else. The only person that I could think was responsible – God Himself.

Sure, I knew "God loves me" and "He works everything for my good and His glory." I made sure I kept telling my teammates in Bible study those "truths." I posted Facebook status after Facebook status full of Bible verses so I could try to convince myself that I still believed... or at least others.

But although the head knowledge existed, my heart was in a whole other arena.
Tough seasons reveal what we really believe, and my tough season was revealing that everything I thought defined me wasn't real to me at all.
I didn't know what to do about it...
Every day was more hopeless than the day before. I was losing my faith and in doing so, my identity.

Jump ahead eight years and the good news I know now is that even when I try letting go of God, He never lets go of me. Although it took years to get through my season of doubting, my faith is stronger after walking through the fire.

Of course, there isn't just one "fire" we have to walk through in life. Unfortunately, life on this earth is fire after fire after fire.

My husband Brandon and I entered a new fire just a few months ago. And again, I've found that what I thought was heart knowledge about God and his role in my life is actually only head knowledge. I don't doubt God is good anymore, but this season has proved that my heart doubts that He treasures me and I am secure in Him. And Brandon's heart struggles doubting he is significant to God and approved by Him (thank you counseling). Which is why Brandon and I both find ourselves in a season where we are "putting ourselves first" (read my last post on that here). And by that I mean, not trying to work hard to earn our security or significance in Christ, but getting our hearts to believe that we are already secure and significant to Him. But we are learning that getting that head knowledge to sink to our hearts doesn't happen by osmosis – sometimes it takes intentional work.

So what do we do when our head and heart think differently? Here's what we are learning:

1. Admit there is a gap between our heads and hearts.
When I began doubting God during my freshman year of college, I refused to acknowledge it for as many months as I could. I would walk into Bible study with a smile on my face and my "head knowledge" ready to give the right church answers. My heart doubted everything about my faith, but I stayed in denial.

The problem is, pretending to believe doesn't do anything but let the reality of doubt grow deeper and stronger. I so badly wish I could go back to freshman year, walk into Bible study, and be honest with others and myself about my struggles. That would have given the church an opportunity to actually BE the church to me and walk with me through a tough season. Instead I picked myself up by my bootstraps in order to save face and walked through that tough season alone.

Friend, if your heart is struggling to believe the God of the Bible is true in any way, can I encourage you to admit that to yourself? And then… to someone else? It's hard, it's awkward, but it's the first step to freedom.

2. Ask God to teach us the truth.
While it's true that it's important for us to be intentional as we try to digest and believe truth, it can't happen on our own effort. For anyone to truly know God and the truths of His word, God Himself has to work supernaturally in our hearts. Want to hear the great news? HE WANTS TO DO THAT IN US. God desires for us to know Him and truly believe His Word. All we have to do is ask.

One of my favorite verses in the Bible is when a father brings his sick son to Jesus and asks Him to drive out the evil spirit possessing him. The father asks Jesus to heal him by beginning the sentence, "if you can". When Jesus responds that everything is possible in Him the father exclaims, "Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!" Amen. That is a prayer I believe God is honored in. Most mornings lately this is my version of that prayer:

"Lord, I believe in you. I believe you are good. I believe that I am secure in you – that I am hidden in you and no real harm can come to me with you as my rock and my salvation. I believe that you see me and you love me - that I am treasured in your sight. Help my unbelief. Help that head knowledge become heart knowledge- so that my actions reflect those truths and not the lies the enemy throws at me."

Ask the Father to help you believe today. He desires that for you.

3. Intentionally seek out truth.
Here is where the work comes in. I'm learning that I have to put a much greater effort into internalizing truth than I want to sometimes. That means reading scripture that tells me those truths. Memorizing scripture. Talking those truths to myself throughout the day. I'll be honest – it's not always something I desire to do. But it is something I need.

Brandon and I have realized we have spent most of our lives listening to ourselves rather than talking to ourselves. We are in the habit of letting our feelings dictate our thoughts instead of letting thoughts (based on truth) dictate our feelings. In a fallen world, that will always lead to destruction. Emotions are good and God-given – but they do not always point to truth. When truth is our foundation, we make our feelings submit to reality. The great thing is, when emotions are put in the right place, I'm learning they are beginning to follow suit with truth.

My heart is finally grasping that I am actually secure in God. And I am beginning to feel confidence I never before had. But I didn't begin with that confidence. It began with me telling myself I am secure in Him while everything in me is screaming, "No you're not, Jordan! You're in danger. Run the other way. Don't trust anyone." Now my heart is beginning to whisper, "Yes, you are secure in Him, Jordan. Trust Him. Be bold. You don't have to protect yourself. You are free to move towards people and love them, not fear them." It takes work, but as I begin to reap the benefits of that work I can confidently tell you with a smile that it's worth it.

4 Cultural Gems of Africans

Posted: 11 Sep 2017 10:52 PM PDT

Africans most prized gem is their cultural value; they are proud of their culture, as it represents who they are as individuals and as a people. Jumia Travel shares 4 cultural gems of Africans.

1. Showing Respect To Elders
In African societies, elders are not treated like any other member of society, they are treated with respect. This is mainly because the African cultural value is based on foundations of the past and present, and for this reason elders are acknowledged and well respected. In gatherings, they are allowed to ask their questions and when they give opinions or advice, their opinions or advice is usually revered and abided by. Also, during mealtime they are naturally served first, before any other age group.

2. Pointing At Some With the Index Finger is Considered Rude
The use of pointing as a way of referring to or identifying someone, especially when done with your index finger, is considered rude and/or offensive in some African societies. If you must point when referring to someone, then you should try as much as possible not to be blatant about it, or simply turn your chin in the direction of the person while widening your eyes a bit.

3. Receive Items With Either Your Two Hands or Your Right Hand
In African societies, it is considered offensive to accept something being handed to you with your left hand, especially when you're receiving the thing from an elder. It is more appropriate to receive things with either your two hands or your right hand. However, receiving items with your two hands is more commonly done when an elder is the one handing it out, rather than someone in your age group or in a lower age group.

4. Greeting
Greetings are highly valued in African societies, mainly because the society values respect so highly and associates greeting with a show of respect. Greeting is a good way to make a positive impression on an African, especially when the greeting is directed at an elder. However, it is more common to see the younger one greeting the older one, than an older one greeting a younger one. This is because it is expected of the younger one to initiate the greeting, then the older one responds. A quick 'hello' or 'hi' will suffice for people within your age group, and for elders, a simple 'good morning', 'good afternoon' or 'good evening' will suffice.

Car stolen with 7 week old baby inside | Mr Olumide's Blog

Posted: 11 Sep 2017 10:50 PM PDT

A car was stolen with a seven-week-old baby inside after the infant's mother left the vehicle unattended to collect a takeaway.

The mum told police her baby was asleep when she parked up in a disabled space at the Chipotle restaurant in Fontana, California, on Tuesday afternoon.

She left the keys in the ignition of the 2013 silver Kia Optima to keep the air conditioning running while she went inside to pick up her order, police said.
A man who had been sitting at a table inside the restaurant on Sierra Ave allegedly jumped inside the car and drove off, officials said.

The mother told police she ran after him in the car park, screaming at him to give her baby back, KABC News reported.

A witness told the officer that a man had fled the vehicle with the baby in his arms and ran up a nearby hill.

The suspect was found a short time later with the child, who was unharmed.

Police confirmed Agabosi Christopher Tanpinu was arrested.

It is unknown if the mother will face any police action.
