3 policemen arrested for stealing ex-president Jonathan’s TVs, fridges, others | Mr Olumide's Blog

Posted: 01 Aug 2017 04:03 AM PDT

The police authorities have detained three policemen following the reported theft of household items at the former residence of ex-President Goodluck Jonathan in Gwarimpa Estate, Abuja.

Punch gathered on Monday that the policemen would soon face orderly room trial after which they would be dismissed from service for theft.

A source, who is familiar with the investigation into the case, said that the policemen who were guarding the residence had admitted to selling some of the  items which they allegedly stole from the house.

The source identified items allegedly stolen by the policemen to include expensive furniture, television sets, refrigerators, split air conditioners,  bowler hats,  designer suits and some Ijaw attire.

"The investigation into the theft is almost concluded and it is certain that the policemen involved in the case would be eased out of the service for gross misconduct. How can they steal what they were meant to protect?" the source stated.

The Federal Capital Police Command, in a statement, said it had commenced investigation into the case, adding that preliminary investigation indicated that some items were "found to be missing in the house."

Oil price hits all time high price of $53 a barrel

Posted: 01 Aug 2017 03:42 AM PDT

crude oil-priceBy Ese Awhotu with agency report

Oil prices have recorded an all time high in two months hitting $53 per barrel.
Reports said the two-month high price of $53 per barrel recorded yesterday was occasioned by a tightening US crude market and the threat of sanctions against OPEC-member Venezuela.
Brent crude futures were 52.90 dollars per barrel earlier in the day, their highest since May 25.
U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) futures were up 16 cents or 0.3per cent at 49.87 dollars per barrel.
The entire WTI curve is close to moving back over 50 dollars per barrel, with only September and October a notch below that level.
The price rise put both crude benchmarks on track for a sixth consecutive session of gains.
Prices have risen around 10 per cent since the last meeting of leading members by the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, OPEC, and other major producers, including Russia.
At that instance, the group discussed potential measures to further tighten oil markets.
The News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, quoted Jeffrey Halley, analyst at futures brokerage, OANDA as saying that, "U.S inventories are showing massive drawdown, Saudi Arabia seems intent on playing its role as the world's swing producer.
"Impending sanctions on Venezuela by the U.S will almost certainly be oil price-supportive," The U.S is considering imposing sanctions on Venezuela's vital oil sector in response to Sunday's election of a constitutional super-body that Washington has denounced as a "sham" vote.
However, according to NAN, the traders said the biggest price supporter was currently a tightening U.S oil market.
"Strong increases in the price of oil … (were) fuelled in large part by the substantial drawdowns in U.S. inventories over the past several weeks," said William O'Loughlin, analyst at Rivkin Securities.
"A continuation of this trend could indicate the oil market is rebalancing thanks to the production cuts by OPEC and Russia," he added.
NAN reports further that after rising by more than 10 per cent since mid-2016, U.S oil production dipped by 0.2 per cent to 9.41 million barrels per day (bpd) in the week to July 21.
Drilling for new U.S. production is also slowing, with just 10 rigs added in July, the fewest since May 2016.
The tighter market was also visible in the price curve, which shows backwardation in the front end.

Osinbajo meets AU delegation over insurgency

Posted: 01 Aug 2017 03:42 AM PDT

• Laments living condition of IDPs

By Lawrence Olaoye

Acting President Yemi Osinbajo yesterday received the Peace and Security Council (PSC) of the African Union in his office.
Osinbajo, who expressed worry at the high rate of insurgency and cost of maintaining Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) also remarked that countries in the Lake Chad Basin have worked together very well dealing with the terrorist insurgency in the region.
He said "The Lake Chad Basin collaboration is one we are extremely proud of, where we as Africans are working together on our own issues. I am pleased to say the countries have worked greatly together."
The Acting President cited the progress of the Multi-National Joint Task Force set up to address the terrorist insurgency. Osinbajo noted that unlike in the past when there were difficulties when the militaries of the 4 countries tried to work together, the MNJTF surmounted the challenges and has succeeded.
According to him, the Buhari administration is "extremely pleased with what we have seen, and we like to see more," of such cooperation.
However he observed that the humanitarian consequences of the insurgency are compounded by deep poverty, making the costs of dealing with the situation "huge and enormous."
He recalled that there are for instance about 2.4m displaced persons, extensive destruction of property, infrastructure, schools, homes and farmland. In some cases, he said, the situation required the "rebuilding of whole societies."
But he expressed satisfaction with the work of the Peace and Security Council of the AU. "I am extremely pleased and encouraged by the work of the PSC, the time and attention paid to this issue. These are matters we must address now and in the future."
The PSC delegation was led by its Chairperson for the month of July, Ambassador Bankole Adeoye, who is also Nigeria's Ambassador to Ethiopia and to the AU.
In his remarks, he told the Acting President that the PSC delegation have been visiting the 4 countries in the Lake Chad Basin in the past 5 weeks, and have specifically visited 7 cities in Nigeria, Niger, Chad and Cameroon.
"This visit is the high point of our mission," Adeoye stated adding that Nigeria's commitment to peace in Africa has been well demonstrated.
The PSC of the African Union is the standing organ of the Union for the prevention, management and resolution of conflicts. Membership of the 15 member-council are drawn -three each- from Central, Eastern, Northern, Southern and Western Africa.

Kaduna senators petition Oyegun over attack

National Chairman of the All Progressive Congress, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun

By Umar Muhammad Puma

Two senators of the All progressives Congress (APC) from Kaduna state, Suleiman Hunkuyi and Shehu Sani, yesterday protested to the National Secretariat of the party, accusing Governor Nasir El-rufai, of manipulation in the last Saturday Local Government Congresses held in the state.
The duo who petitioned the party chairman, Chief John Oyegun on the development, demanded for the cancelation of the exercise, described it as 'kangaroo,' and "reappoint a very credible team of state congress committee for the state.
The senators, who spoke with journalists also declared that the "National Working Committee does not have a choice but to stick to the party's rules guiding the delegate election."
Recounting how their faction was sidelined, Hunkuyi said, "The acting state chairman and some of the stakeholders were said to have held the meeting at the Kaduna state government house under the chairmanship of the state Political Adviser to the governor (Uba Sanni) and have concluded and issued a list of local government delegates purported to be the list to be submitted to the state congress committee sent to Kaduna.
"All efforts through phone calls to persuade the Ag. state chairman to come back to the proper venue of the meeting and call the state congress committee to do the stakeholders briefing failed. Some of those who were stampeded into attending the government house meeting joined to report that they were told there will not be any election or even stakeholders briefing. They were told the Kaduna state government has decided to call off the process and submit a list which the Political Adviser tendered to them. They were told that they were only summoned to be informed.
"This is in clear breach of the guidelines which stipulate that stakeholders meeting and briefing at the party office on 28th July 2017 to explain the process of conduct of the election to be held next day, July 29.
"The state congress committee, in liaison with the national secretariat shall appoint five persons s to serve as LGCC which was. It done, the election shall take place at the party secretariat/offices in local government areas, which did not hold July 29."
He said that utmost transparency is what is expected in all elections and that in all respects, votes casted must be counted and results announced and recorded on the spot.
According to him,"Mr Chairman, none of the guidelines was respected in conducting the Kangaroo process that produced the list for submission. As very responsible members of the APC, we wish to remind Mr. Chairman of the already bad conduct of the party in Kaduna state."
"Secondly, we are also here to state it very clearly to the national leadership that we are under siege in Kaduna. The use of thugs and violence by agents and close associates of the governor is one thing we cannot tolerate. Sponsored thugs last weekend besieged the NUJ Secretariat in Kaduna, raided the secretariat, destroyed property, attacked us and the journalists and left a journalist, Lawal Mohammed in the pool of his own blood. That cannot be the compass of this party. We are here to call in the national leadership to set up an investigation panel to bring the perpetrators of that violence to book."

NASS urged to enact laws promoting breast feeding

Posted: 01 Aug 2017 03:32 AM PDT

From Femi Oyelola, Kaduna

The Civil Society-Scaling up Nutrition in Nigeria (CS-SUNN) has called on the National Assembly to enact legislations that promote breastfeeding, protect breast-feeding mothers, and clamp down on employers of labour who are non-adherents to the 6 months maternity leave for nursing mothers.
The Communication Officer of the Organizations, Lilian Ajah-Mong stated this in a press statement to mark the 2017
World Breastfeeding Week and made available to the media in Kaduna.
According to her, the law will protect safe medications for mothers and their infants and ensure strong regulations on marketing of breast milk substitutes or baby formulas, So that nursing mothers in Nigeria can be entitled to the constitutional right to breastfeed and newborns the constitutional right to be breastfed anywhere, any day and at all times.
Ajah-Mong added that it is time govrrnment at all levels to prioritize and scale-up the implementation of the National Strategic Plan of Action on Nutrition to address the dire nutrition needs of Nigeria.
On this year's theme "Sustaining Breastfeeding Together", she said it is apt and timely stressing that all decision-makers, partners and relevant stakeholders in the health sector has to forge purposeful affiliations that will yield improved health interventions for Nigerians and rid Nigeria of the negative health statistics registered at the West African Region as well as globally.
Ajah-Mong noted that the NDHS 2013, disclosed that more than 5 million newborns in Nigeria lack essential nutrients and antibodies that would protect them from diseases and death as they are not being exclusively breastfed.
She said, "The same report showed that 37% of children under-five years are stunted, 29% are underweight while 18% are wasted. Another report by IFAD 2012, showed that 8.5% of the total population are under-nourished.
"These negative indices continue to act as a brake on Nigeria's economic development as globally, stunting is currently an indicator for measuring a country's development.
"The Health Sector National Strategic Plan of Action for Nutrition (NSPAN) has a strong exclusive breastfeeding component within its Maternal Nutrition and Infant and Young Child Feeding priority areas.
'However, in order to attain the 50% exclusive breastfeeding targets set in the Plan by 2018, the goal of sustainable promotion and support for optimal breastfeeding will require priority attention, increased funding as well as monitoring of activities during and post implementation.
"CS-SUNN urges governments at all levels and relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies to include a budget line for nutrition in the health and nutrition relevant sector budgets, increase budgetary allocation to health and nutrition "while ensuring timely release of allocated funds for immediate programming and implementation of nutrition interventions.
"We congratulate the Federal Government and the National Assembly on the inauguration of the Legislative Network for Universal Health Coverage and urges the assembly to leverage its legislative roles towards achieving the 15% Abuja declaration on Health and the 1% Consolidated Revenue Fund to the National Health Act (2014) .

Why farmers, herdsmen clashes persist- Expert

Posted: 01 Aug 2017 03:32 AM PDT

From Umar Dankano,Yola.

Lack of observance to the demarcated grazing routes and encroachment by both herdsmen and farmers have been identified as a major cause of the continued clashes between the duo (farmers/herdsmen) for decades in the country.
A former Director of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture,Dr. Hamman Walia made the observation in an interview with journalists in Yola Monday stressing that the Federal Government has a total of 2.25 million hectares of grazing reserves in 21 states since 2013.
Walia, who retired as Coordinator, National Livestock Development Project, North East Zone, said that, the reserves were gazetted by the government advising that, the government should utilise the reserves properly to end the recurring conflicts between farmers and herdsmen.
"The National Livestock Development Project under Federal Ministry of Agriculture from 1974 to 2013, has gazetted about 2.25 million hectares of land for the purpose of grazing reserves in 21 states and Abuja.
"The present Minister of Agriculture, Mr Audu Ogbeh seems not to understand about the development, because the land is already in existence and was legally acquired and gazetted by the federal government."
Walia said the reserves are located in the 19 northern states and in Ogun and Oyo as well as Federal Capital Territory.
According to him, the ministry has the documents and all the states have knowledge of the development noting that livestock production in the country has been left largely in the hands of pastoralists.
"However, in recent years, it has become increasingly apparent that the traditional pastoral mode of production has gradually been influenced by the changing nature of the political, socioeconomic, and biological environment.

Court dissolves Army Captain’s marriage over wife’s adultery

Posted: 01 Aug 2017 03:27 AM PDT

From Uche Nnorom, Makurdi

An Upper Area Court sitting in Makurdi, the Benue state capital has dissolved a two (2) year marriage between a Military Captain, Alexander Ifeanyi Otuve and Joy Uwariome Iziven over alleged adultery.
Capt. Otuve, petitioner, had approached the court in a suit No. UACII/cv.62/2016 asking it to divorce his marriage to Joy whom she married in 2012 under the Era native law and custom of Owan East of Edo state.
While giving evidence before the court, the petitioner, Capt. Otuve said when he was posted to Makurdi, Benue state in 2014, the wife refused to come along with him; adding that even before his transfer to Makurdi, he had noticed some strange attitude in the marriage as his wife goes and comes back at odd hours; a development which their families tried hard to resolve but to no avail.
He testified further that in 2014 when he was again posted to the North- East, the wife refused to go with him hence his suspicion heightened that she is playing some games, hence he resorted to legal action.
"I Decided to follow it legally, we last spoke with each other in 2014 when I tried to retrieve my car from her. I decided to let her be so that I could face my life, she is not a woman I got married to anymore," the petitioner told the court.
The respondent did appear in court throughout the period of hearing.
Delivering judgement, the presiding judge Mrs. Fatima A. Akintomide said the court had established that there was no issue of custody of any surviving child in the marriage and it is a fact that the petitioner is able to establish lack of communication with his wife for the past two years, though, such other alleged grounds wouldn't have been enough for the court to grant divorce.
But, she however, said the intelligent way the petitioner answered the court when asked how he got the respondent present address by responding that it was through the 'social media' where the respondent advertise her business, the court became convinced that the parties are already separated since locating the respondent to be served through substituted means was equally difficult.
The judge then ruled thus, "much may be said but the truth still remains, I cannot force an unwilling partner on a billing partner, but equally an unwillingly partner. The marriage between the petitioner and respondent is hereby dissolved."
