EDO GOVT DEMOLISHES 800MIL MALL BELONGING TO ITS PARTY MEMBER | Mr Olumide's Blog Posted: 26 May 2017 04:12 AM PDT Officials of Edo State government yesterday demolished a new shopping mall belonging to a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Benin, the state capital. The multi-million naira complex housing 218 shops located on Missions Road within Kings Square, the heart of the ancient capital town, belongs to one of the first class chiefs of Benin Kingdom and APC leader, Chief John Osamede Adun, the Ayobahan of Benin Kingdom. It was learnt that the building, which the owner put at over N800 million, did not only violate the master plan for Benin City, but the owner also encroached on the walkway. Traders were taken aback by the demolition as most of them were said to have paid in advance for the new shops. Most of them were crying for refund of their money. Also, one of the sons of the APC chieftain was said to have been arrested by policemen as he rushed to the scene to prevent the team deployed for the demolition exercise from carrying out the action. In his reaction, Adun denied building the property on government land as he bought it through due process and that all the relevant documents of purchase, deeds of transfer, survey plans and approvals were followed as required. Adun said he was not out to fight government or seek any compensation but government should take steps to resolve the impasse. He said: "I got that place from five persons with Mandilas, I don't have quarrel with the state governor, we are in the same party. He has right to do what people report to him, he is my friend, he is a brother; he is the governor of the state. I am a member of the party, a leader. I know if you are wrong, first tell that person you are wrong."

Posted: 26 May 2017 04:12 AM PDT Eniola Akinkuotu, Abuja Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has called on the Federal Government to negotiate with those agitating for the creation of a Biafran republic out of the current set-up in Nigeria. Obasanjo said this at an event, tagged 'Memory and Nation Building: Biafra 50 years later', which held in Abuja on Thursday. The event was held to commemorate 50 years of the declaration of an independent state of Biafra by the late Dim Chukwuemeka Ojukwu on May 30, 1967. Obasanjo as the Commander, Third Marine Commando Division, was the military officer who accepted the surrender of the Biafran forces on January 12, 1970, after three years of war. However, the former President said the agitation for Biafra was like a woman complaining constantly about her marriage and threatening to file for a divorce against her husband. Obasanjo said in such a situation, the husband must pet and "massage" his wife to make her feel loved. He stated, "I believe that the point must be clear. Nigeria must be loved and we must treat Nigeria as we treat love affairs. It must be massaged. Nigeria must be massaged by all of us. "It is like a love affair. If in a house with a husband and a wife and the wife says 'I am fed up, I am going' and every day, that is the song you hear, you will soon get fed up yourself as the husband and you will say, 'if you want to go, you can go'. "But if there is any misunderstanding and you resolve it, and you find a solution, you will live together almost forever. I believe there is no substitute for holding Nigeria and massaging it as you massage love. There is no alternative and I will say we should even appeal. "If anybody says he wants to go, it is not that you will say 'you can go if you want to go'. Don't go! There is enough cake for each and every one of us. If what you are asking for is more of the cake, then ask for it in a way that is pleasant, not in a way that will make others feel you are not entitled to what you are asking for." Recalling his role in the Nigerian Civil War, Obasanjo said it was never the plan of the Nigerian government to exterminate the Igbo. He explained that everything that the federal troops did was in a bid to unite the country. Obasanjo added, "We had in our pocket the Geneva convention to guide us. In addition to that, we had a special code of conduct. Third, we had foreign observers. We had people who were like umpires. "If it was a war to exterminate and we had no reconciliation in mind, what would foreign observers be doing? The foreign observers reported periodically and even had powers to investigate any allegation and they did." Also speaking at the event, acting President Yemi Osinbajo said Nigerians must continue to strive for the unity of the nation. While delivering his speech, titled 'Greater together than apart', Osinbajo noted that the civil war was a stain on the history of Nigeria. He, however, said it would be foolish if Nigerians passed through such a thing again. The acting President stated, "Indeed the saying 'experience is the best teacher' is incomplete. The full statement of that Welsh adage is that experience is the best teacher for a fool. History is a better and kinder teacher." Osinbajo said the demand for secession was not exclusive to Nigeria but was also present in many western countries including the United Kingdom and the United States. He, however, stated that the answer to the problems of Nigeria goes beyond secession. The acting President said the diversity in Nigeria should be seen as a blessing because it offered manifold opportunities for greatness. Osinbajo added, "The most successful nations of the world are those who do not fall into the lure of separation but who through thick and thin forge unity in diversity. Nigeria is no different. We are not two or three but more of 300 ethnic groups between the same geographical space, presented with a great opportunity to combine all of our strengths into a nation that is truly more than the sum of its parts." He said Nigerians should never shy away from discussing the terms of our unity because debate was an essential aspect of democracy. The acting President added, "I fully believe that Nigerians should exercise, to the fullest extent, the right to discuss and debate the terms of our existence. Debates and disagreements are fundamental aspects of democracy." The President of Igbo socio-cultural group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief Nnia Nwodo, said the political system was jaundiced and hindering proper development, adding that with fiscal autonomy, every state in Nigeria would develop faster. Nwodo said, "Before the war, national unity was the norm. A Biafran was a member of Northern Nigeria House of Chiefs. Biafrans lived freely and invested in all parts of Nigeria. "In Lagos, Dr Azikiwe was elected leader of Government Business. Mbonu Ojike was elected Deputy Speaker. In Enugu, Alhaji Umoru Altine, a Fulani man, was elected Mayor of Enugu. Mr. Willoughby, a Yoruba man, was Accountant-General." Copyright PUNCH.

I sincerely wish to use this medium to reach out to the government, humanitarian organizations, spirited individuals and all members of the public to add value to the lives of these new children who are for now been starved and suffered. She gave the testimony in the divorce suit she filed against her estranged husband. The petitioner, a 30-year-old nurse, who resides at Shiaba Street, Agege, a Lagos suburb, said she regretted her seven-year marriage to Samson Nkanang, 33. She claimed that the husband usually abandons her at home and travels on official trips without any form of care.
The estranged wife urged the court to dissolve the marriage so that they can go their separate ways, adding
Mojisola alleged that her husband is temperamental and constantly beats her over minor issues. Samson, who admitted subjecting his wife to frequent beatings, however, denied the allegations of being an irresponsible husband and father. He told the court that he was on an official trip for two months in Akwa Ibom State when his wife told him she was pregnant. He said:
Samson said he has also been responsible for the upkeep of the three-year-old child and the mother till date. He alleged that he has been getting strange phone calls from an unknown person threatening him to leave his wife alone. The husband pleaded with the court not to dissolve the marriage, saying "I am still in love with my wife.'' Mr Philip Williams, the court's President, advised the estranged couple to maintain peace and order. Williams referred the couple to forensic centre to affirm the biological status of the child and deferred the divorce suit indefinitely. Vanguard

Day Care Worker Arrested For Torturing Baby To Death | Mr Olumide's Blog Posted: 26 May 2017 03:27 AM PDT The police have arrested and charged with murder, a Maryland day care worker who was captured on video "torturing" an 8-month-old baby girl who later died. 23yrs old Leah Walden is charged with murder, assault, child abuse and reckless endangerment in the death of little Reese Bowman at Rocket Tiers Learning Center on Tuesday. "Reese Bowman, in my opinion, was tortured," said Col. Stanley Brandford, the chief of Baltimore police department's criminal investigations division. Brandford told Baltimore Sun that the video shows Walden using "excessive blankets, which fully covered the child's head, violently snatching the child out of the crib with one arm, swinging at the baby as if she was slapping her, and placing pillows over the baby's face." Walden also walked out camera range several times while holding the baby. Police took Walden into custody early Thursday. Court records for her case were not yet available online to show whether she had obtained an attorney. Police said officers were called to the day care Tuesday afternoon for a report of a baby not breathing. Medics performed CPR on the infant, who was taken to the University of Maryland Medical Center and pronounced dead a short time later. Brandford said there were no obvious signs of trauma, but detectives started a routine investigation. Brandford said Walden told them she fed the baby, wrapped her in a blanket and put her down for a nap. The management of Rocket Tiers alerted police to the video, which told a different story, Brandford said. Reese was awake at the time; another baby in the same room with Walden and Reese was not hurt. Reese's family released a statement saying they were suffering "tremendous pain" and asking for privacy, news outlets reported. "Our hearts are broken. No family should ever have to experience the loss of a child under any circumstances," the statement said.

Story Of Nigeria’s First Female Professional Mechanic | Mr Olumide's Blog Posted: 26 May 2017 02:42 AM PDT Sandra Aguebor is the CEO and Founder of the Lady Mechanic initiative and Sandex Car care. It is true that in Nigeria women are gradually getting into corporate positions that men usually dominate in the past. However it is uncommon to see women who are professional car mechanics. In Universities today, women like Sandra have dared to study male-dominated and practical courses. She said, "It all started through dreams, at the age of 13. I saw Jesus Christ teaching me how to fix cars in a series of dreams that lasted seven nights." Certain that this was what she wanted to do, Sandra gave engineering her best. She started working at a local garage during her secondary school days. "I would get to school at 8 am and leave at 2 am. My overall was already in my school bag. From school, I would dash to the garage and work till 6 or 7 pm." In time she started working with the Nigerian Railway Corporation. After 10 years, she became her own boss and established her own car garage which is still operational till date. Sandra has been in the car repair business for 32 who years now. Making a success out of her career, many could clearly see the lady was right when she chose the profession that most women would never even give a thought. "For me to become the first female Nigerian mechanic, I had to work five times harder than men to prove myself. Now, many people don't know my name, it's 'Lady Mechanic' everywhere I go." Sandra showed her philanthropic side by reaching out to women in need. She assembled them all and enrolled them in her teaching classes. In 2004, Sandra founded the Lady Mechanic Initiative. The organization specifically grooms women in the business of fixing cars. Thus, helps them to be employed and financially independent. Records show that since 2004, Sandra has empowered and trained over 1,000 women in fixing cars under the Lady Mechanic Initiative programme across 5 Nigerian states. "Our clients keep coming back – they prefer us because we are determined to be better than a lot of mechanics who take their job and their salary for granted," Sandra Aguebor has a vision that by the year 2025, she must have trained up to 100 000 ladies who would serve as pillars and pathfinders across several African communities. INEC Accuses Gov Yahaya Bello Of Double Registration | Mr Olumide's Blog Posted: 26 May 2017 02:27 AM PDT The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has accused Kogi state governor Yahaya Bello of double registration for Permanent Voter Card, as against the electoral law. The statement reads; "It has come to the attention of INEC that Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello registered as a voter for the second time on Tuesday May 23, at Government House in Lokoja. "His first registration was on January 30, 2011, in Wuse Zone 4, Abuja. The governor's double registration, and doing so outside lNEC's designated centres, are both illegal. "For the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR), INEC has designated a centre in each of the country's 774 local governments areas, including FCT's six Area Councils." "We wish to clarify that no INEC worker was authorised to re-register Bello or any citizen, or to do so outside our designated registration centres. The commission, therefore, dissociates itself from the governor's action, and promises to take disciplinary action against the staff who conducted Bello's second registration. "As for the governor, Section 308 (l) (a) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), precludes lNEC from prosecuting him while in office. However, the commission has cancelled his second and illegal registration forthwith." INEC said Gov. Yahaya Bello's second registration will be cancelled as the Electoral Law make no exception for anyone to register more than once, and to do so outside designated centres.

Commendation as Senate passes petroleum governance bill 14 years after | Mr Olumide's Blog Posted: 26 May 2017 02:27 AM PDT *APC, NUPENG, PENGASSAN hail passage The passage of the bill came 14 years after the Petroleum Industry Bill was drafted and submitted to the National Assembly. The PIGB, formerly known as the Petroleum Industry Bill, had suffered setbacks since 2003 when it was first sent to the National Assembly. While presenting the report, Chairman of the committee, who's Chairman of the Joint Committee on Petroleum, Senator Tayo Alasoadura, said some subsidiaries of NNPC had also been merged into an entity to be known as the Nigeria Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NPRC). President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, who presided over the plenary, said the bill had been in the National Assembly "for many years and we have not been able to pass it." He said a commitment was made at the beginning of the 8th Senate that the bill would be passed. The proposed NPRC is expected to be a one-stop-shop in the petroleum industry. It will also be allowed to retain 10 per cent of the revenue it generates as the cost of collection. The proposed entity will be saddled with the responsibility of promoting efficient, effective, safe and sustainable infrastructural development of the industry, while ensuring compliance with all applicable laws and regulations governing the sector. The commission will also be in charge of implementation and maintenance of technical standards, codes and specifications in the industry in line with global best practices. Meanwhile, the APC has commended the Senate for passing the Petroleum Industry Governance Bill, describing the development as historic. The party said the bill had sought to introduce reforms that would ensure greater transparency and accountability in the Nigerian oil and gas industry. NUPENG and PENGASSAN have also commended the Senate for the passage of the PIGB. They however said, "The passage of the PIGB, while commendable, will not deliver the full benefits of the intended reforms except the other aspects of the PIB are also legislated."

Posted: 26 May 2017 01:42 AM PDT …priest, family thrown out of residenceThere is anger at the Chapel of Christ the Light, Alausa, Lagos State, after the Presiding Chaplain, Venerable Femi Taiwo, was sacked by the Governing Council allegedly on the order of the state Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode. He got the sack on Monday, May 15, without any query or official reason stated in the sack letter. He was said to have been ordered out of his official quarters where he lived with his wife and two children within 24 hours of receiving the letter. Some church members reportedly contributed money to buy gas cooker, and other household items for the family as they vacated the vicarage. Investigations by Punch showed that Pastor Taiwo 'angered' the Governor's wife, Bolanle Ambode, who had visited the chapel on Sunday, May 14, when the church held an anointing service. The church is under the Lagos State Ministry of Home Affairs, while the Office of the Lagos State First Lady supervises church. Church members were said to have filed out to receive anointing oil during the May 14 service without any preference given to Bolanle, who waited endlessly with her entourage. She was said to have later moved to be anointed and moments later, stormed out of the church, as some of the women leaders ran after her. Bolanle, who was reported to be visibly angry, allegedly shunned entreaties from the women, which included the wife of the presiding chaplain. The cleric got the sack the following day. The directive to sack the Pastor because of the governor's wife waited on queue during anointing service was issued in a letter dated May 15, 2017, and signed by the Chairman, Governing Council of CCTL, Mr. Olugbenga Solomon. The letter also ordered the Assistant Chaplain, Very Rev. Ayo Oyadotun, to take over with immediate effect. A church member, who witnessed the drama and begged not to be identified, said , "The church had declared seven-day fasting after we lost two prominent members. "The Sunday service, which was declared as anointing service, was supposed to end the fasting. "The First Lady, Mrs. Bolanle Ambode, was present with her entourage. She comes to the church once in a while. "When it was time to be anointed, the cleric asked people to come forward, adding that it was optional. Three people stood at the stage to anoint people. They included the chaplain, the presiding chaplain and one other person. "People started stepping out one after another. The governor's wife, after some time, also stepped out and was anointed." The source said within a few minutes of taking the oil, Bolanle, who felt disrespected, stepped out with her entourage. Another member of the church said, "As she stepped out, it was obvious that she was angry. The president of the women's fellowship and the pastor's wife ran after her. She shunned them, entered her car and zoomed off. "When we came to the church on Tuesday, we heard that Venerable Taiwo had been sacked. We were told that he was sacked because the the governor's wife didn't get the anointing oil first and she felt disrespected. "The man that signed the letter is also a civil servant," the source said. The governing council is said to be made up of members of the church and some appointees of the government. It was learnt that Taiwo still had two years to spend as the presiding chaplain when he was fired. The source said some church members quickly bought household items for his family as they vacated the church premises on Thursday. He said, "The children went to school on Thursday without knowing that they would not be staying in the vicarage that evening. Church members bought bed and other household items for them because they did not have their own property. "The members said their pastor did not offend them, and protested the sacking. The governing council members, however, said they should forget it because whatever came from Alausa was final. Most of the church members are civil servants who can't talk too much." President Obama, his wife and children attended church service as US first family without any special treatment. They usually sit in available seats, no front seat or special treatment.
