Nigeria’s 2019 Elections, Our Major Priority – US

Posted: 06 Mar 2018 12:10 AM PST

The United States of America has said Nigeria's 2019 general elections and a peaceful transition are major priority, in view of the country's strategic position in the region.

The US Department of State said this during a background briefing on the first trip of the Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, to Africa.

Tillerson would meet with President Muhammadu Buhari and other top government officials and also, leaders of Chad, Djibouti, Ethiopia and Kenya during his travels from Tuesday, March 6 to 13.

The department said over two decades ago, the number of countries in Africa with really democratically-elected government are really very few – only three or four. It said, however, now we have over two dozen African countries with democratically elected governments and which are hopefully not going to have transitions in government through coup d'etats and other illegal methods.

"As we look at the 2019 elections, obviously Nigeria, although it's not this year – it's going to be next year – that really is a major priority focus, because that's going to be the third most populous country in the world by 2050.

"It has really very complex political issues and ethnic and tribal issues and security issues,

"And, that's an area that we really are focusing on; how to do a peaceful transition, a democratic transition, but more important is how to hold governments accountable to the people," the state department said.

The department also explained that a lot of African countries are still fragile democracies and the US is trying to strengthen them.

The U.S. also commended elections in Liberia, saying it was the first open, fair and peaceful transition of governments in over 75 years.

The department of state, however, regretted what it called the "horrendous rule of Charles Taylor and the degradation of the institutions there, but now, we'll going back and they're building and I think with the election of George Weah, that's going to be a positive thing."

Do You Want To Be Better? How To Adjust Your Attitude QUICKLY

Posted: 05 Mar 2018 11:41 AM PST

Get ready, because my hope and prayer is that by the end of reading this, you will know exactly what to do when you need a quick attitude adjustment. Note the Scriptures that you're going to need to chew on, memorize, and apply when you need them the most.

Before we get started though, I need to say that the attitude has a lot to do with your mood and mindset. It also has to do with what the other party is saying or doing, or what you're allowing to marinate in your mind in regards to a test, trial, opinion, or decision that needs to be made.

Furthermore, it has to do with Satan trying to get a rise out of you to get you to respond wrong in front of others. And usually, your attitude is going to determine your next action step. That's why you need to determine wisely, before you say something or make a move.

So, whether you're in a meeting, talking to someone face-to-face, standing in a check-out line, reading something that you don't like on Facebook or an email, or engaging in an escalating discussion with your spouse, child, friend, co-worker, boss/leader, sister in Christ, or neighbor, you are going to need to know how to adjust your attitude quickly, prior to you saying or doing something that you may soon regret. Plus, you don't want to displease God by your negative words or reactions.

With that being said, let's talk about this from the angle of disagreements. When you are not in agreement with something someone has said, give it a moment. Don't react right away. Think before you speak, type, or react. In the Bible, James 1:19-20 instructs us to, "Be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry. For your anger can never make things right in God's sight." (NLT) After you've thought it all over, respond properly.

Actually, I need to say here that anger can oftentimes work hand-hand with a bad attitude (i.e. bad mindset, body language, or disposition/countenance/facial expression). If this anger or bad attitude is unchecked, it can in return, open the door for unnecessary mistakes and for the enemy to wreak havoc in your life. Ephesians 4:26-27 tells us, "And don't sin by letting anger control you. Don't let the sun go down while you are still angry, for anger gives a foothold to the devil."

Key word, control. Don't let it control you. I encourage you to get a hold of it quickly, sis. And shut the door. In other words, don't give our great enemy Satan a foothold on you. And don't let the anger fester.

Now, I want to add here... If you feel yourself rising or getting an attitude, pray silently and ask the Lord to help you to bring it down. After that, respond in a way that pleases the Lord, according to His Word. You can also pray Psalm 141:3, "Take control of what I say, O Lord, and guard my lips." (NLT) I absolutely LOVE this one! But also keep in mind that sometimes you don't have to say anything. Ecclesiastes 3:7 reminds us that there is "…a time be quiet and a time to speak." So, be sensitive to know the difference.

Personally, because I know the attitude is attached to my mindset, when I feel myself going there, I consciously check my thoughts and emotions. I ask myself, "Why am I so upset or why does this bother me so much?" Or I'll pray (as I've instructed you) and say, "Which fruit of the Spirit do I need right now, Lord?" And the Holy Spirit will produce in me what I need.

He may quicken me with a gentle whisper saying, "Self-control. Practice self-control." Galatians 5:19-23 tells us, "But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control." (NLT) So, let Him produce His fruit in you at just the right time.

Also, let me tell you. There are times when we do need to say something or let someone know that we are upset. That is a reality! BUT…that's also just the starting place. It needs to end somewhere. And it needs to end, right. It also needs to be at the right time - when you've cooled down.

Listen. Jesus knows that we will get angry sometimes or have wrong attitudes towards circumstances and people. Yet, when we do, we need to be able to control ourselves and try to put things in the right perspectivequickly. Honestly, anger and getting an attitude are a part of life for us. Yet, when either of them rises up, (which is when our old sinful nature is trying to raise its ugly head again), that's when we have to do what the Bible tells us to do which is, "Throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception. Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes. Put on your new nature, created to be like God-truly righteous and holy." (Ephesians 4:22-24 NLT)

Ephesians 4:29 goes on to say, "Don't use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them." And Ephesians 4:31 instructs, "Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of malicious behavior."

This is God's Word showing us what to do and what NOT to do in a Scriptural nutshell, sis. We need to throw it off, get rid of it, and then think and respond in a way that will please the Lord. I'll close with this last verse from Ephesians 4:32 which says, "Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven us."

I hope and pray that these verses and practical tips have helped you in some way to adjust your attitude quickly. You can do this! Try it.

Remember, Jesus is coming back soon! And those who endure unto the end shall be saved.

My Regret In Life - Obasanjo Speaks On His 81st Birthday Celebration

Posted: 05 Mar 2018 11:41 AM PST

While speaking at a ceremony to mark his birthday at Marque Events Centre located within the premises of Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, Abeokuta, former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Monday revealed one of the major regrets in his life.

The influential politician who is marking his 81st birthday, said the early death of his parents and their failure to enjoy the fruits of the sacrifice they made while raising him continues to make him sad.

Obasanjo said he wished his parents lived long to witness his success in life. "One thing I always miss and remember is that my parents left this world too early. The sacrifice they made, they did not wait to see the results. How I wish they had waited to see and eat fruits of their labour."

Obasanjo said he draws consolation from the Yoruba belief that the dead always look behind to see happenings after them on earth, and with that belief, he said he was sure his late parents would still be happy in their graves even now.

"But going by what Yoruba believe and say, that the dead always watch over their beloved ones and see happenings around them, I am convinced that my parents are happy in their graves, as they watch over me," he said.

On his birthday, Obasanjo said he would continue to appreciate, praise, adore and worship God, just as he admitted that all those who worked and are still working with him are loyal.

He expressed his appreciation to his aides and workers, adding that his success would not be without their commitment and loyalty.

He advised people to serve humanity, noting that it is when humanity is served that one can serve God, adding that he did not believe that God has created a bad situation for Nigeria, or in any particularly country in Africa.

"We must be able to serve humanity, if we can't serve humanity, we can't serve God. I do not believe God had created bad situation for Nigeria, or any particular country in Africa. If things are not going right, we must blame ourselves," he said.

Fayose Reacts To Buhari's Planned Visit To Benue, Other States

Posted: 05 Mar 2018 11:41 AM PST

The Governor of Ekiti state, Ayodele Fayose, has described President Muhammadu Buhari's visit to Taraba and planned visit to Benue, Zamfara, Yobe and Rivers states as an afterthought.

The President announced his planned visit on Monday following outcry by Nigerians who felt insulted that he could attend a wedding party but couldn't pay a visit to families who have been killed by herdsmen in many states of the federation.

Speaking through his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, Fayose said it was the height of cruelty that the same President, who promised to lead from the front in the fight against Boko Haram, could not visit Dapchi, Yobe State where 110 school girls were abducted by the insurgents but went on merrymaking in Kano.

"On January 9 and 12, this year, 88 victims of herdsmen attacks were given mass burial in Taraba State. Also on January 11, 2018, another 73 persons killed by suspected Fulani herdsmen in Benue State were buried in a mass grave in Makurdi, the state capital.

"Meaning that in Taraba and Benue States alone, 161 Nigerians were given mass burial within three days! This never caught the attention of our President. Rather, it was a visit to Nasarawa, a neighboring State to Benue that was important to him.

"To further demonstrate his lack of compassion for Nigerians, while the entire nation, especially parents of the 110 abducted school girls in Dapchi, Yobe State are still in anguish, President Buhari went to Kano last Saturday to attend a social function, thus sparking negative reactions from Nigerians.

"Apparently, it was the negative reactions of Nigerians, especially on Social Media and the effects on the President's reelection bid that necessitated his hurried visit to Taraba State today, and planned visits to Benue, Zamfara, Yobe and Rivers States.

"I am sure the people of Taraba State won't be hoodwinked by the President's cosmetic sympathy, show of concern and crocodile tears, which he never bordered to shed when hundreds of indigenes of the State were being killed by suspected herdsmen," the governor said.

President George Weah Visits Nigeria, Meets Buhari

Posted: 05 Mar 2018 11:41 AM PST

President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday met behind closed door with the Liberian President, George Weah, at the presidential villa, Abuja.

While speaking with state house correpondents, the Liberian President, on Monday, advised the Super Eagles to prepare early to enable them to make impact in the Russia 2018 World Cup.

The former professional footballer and world best player, also urged Nigerian sports authorities to provide conducive environment for the players in the camp, and warned against a situation where players would be deprived of their allowances, saying such situation makes players to lose focus.

He said, "I think Nigerian team is a model, we all follow them. I have played with great Nigerian players, I played against them. Now you have a new generation, the fact that they qualified is a good thing for Nigeria.

"But I hope they will prepare very early, because they are going to represent Africa and we will be there to watch them, for them to bring the trophy for the first time if it is possible.

"I want every African government to know that if you win World Cup, it is a pride to Africa and not just to Nigeria.

"So, we must do everything to ensure that the players are not stressed, make sure they concentrate, make sure their incentives are given to them to motivate them.

"Some of the things you see at the World Cup, you will see an entire team go to represent a whole country and you will hear that one minister took the money, they did not pay these players and the players are causing problem.

"When players are going to camp, it is to relax and focus. And for them to be in camp, they must have everything there for them not to worry."

Weah recalled that he played in European setting where they did not have to worry about anything when they were in camp, adding the only things they were doing in camp then were to shower and prepare for the games, saying there was no excuse not to perform because everything that players needed was provided.

"So, let the players not have excuse; support them and let them go and bring back that cup," he told Nigerian sports authorities.
