Nollywood Actor Kenneth Okonkwo Declares For Enugu Governorship

Posted: 05 Mar 2018 03:56 AM PST

Nollywood actor, Kenneth Okonkwo, has officially declared to contest the forthcoming governorship election in Enugu State as an APC candidate.

The screen star and legal practitioner who declared his candidacy over the weekend during the APC stakeholders meeting of Enugu state Chapter, said he wanted to replace the incumbent governor because, he had nothing to show for his fours years in office in terms of legacy projects.

The actor said: "My people made that move, called me and I said God forbid that I will quench your spirit. I said I am going to present myself in line with the wishes of my people for this post to be the governor of Enugu state 2019 and I so present myself.

"I want you to understand that it is beautiful when you are coming under a party that you have perused the constitutional aims and objectives and you have ensured that those objectives are compatible with your own aims and objectives as a politician.

"In APC, our aim is to build a nation that will grantee political stability, mutual and peaceful co-existence, respect and understanding and equal opportunity for all.

"We are here to render selfless at all levels of governance that will guarantee people a sense of nationality and patriotism. And I have found those beliefs compatible with my own. I, Dr. Kenneth Okonkwo, hereby present myself to be the gubernatorial candidate of this party."

The Nollywood actor explained that it would be more difficult for him to win the APC ticket than winning the governorship itself.

"It is easy to win against a non-performing person; it is easy to win somebody whose greatest achievement is billboards and posters.

"We are not talking about refurbishment, we are talking about legacies," while challenging anybody from Nsukka to point out any legacy project that the current administration has done. "So if it is not done in Nsukka zone where he comes from, I don't need to ask other zones," Okonkwo said.

Okonkwo said if he becomes the governor, he would replicate the success of Nollywood, where millions of jobs are created without any government support but based on hard work.

"We want to deploy such input and creativity to create legacy projects that Nsukka people can be proud of. That is why they said I must proceed to contest for the governorship of Enugu state come 2019 and we will win," the veteran actor said.

He disclosed that should he be elected, he would serve a single term, reasoning that since an Nsukka man has served for one term, if elected he would only serve one term in the spirit of the southeastern state's zoning arrangement.

Woman Who's Homeless Cries Out... Her Son Plays For Arsenal FC, Lives In A Mansion

Posted: 05 Mar 2018 03:46 AM PST

Arsenal star, Ainsley Maitland-Niles' homeless mum who is sleeping in a 10ft container while her son lives in a mansion, has cried out over negligence.

According to a shocking report by The SUN, the homeless mum of £30,000-a-week Arsenal star, Ainsley Maitland-Niles, is sleeping in a freezing 10ft square metal storage crate.

The 38-year-old Jule Niles, says her 20-year-old son Ainsley, refused to help her get a flat, adding: "The money's gone to his head."

While the Arsenal star shares a luxury £700,000 apartment with brother Cordi, the mum has to sneak past staff at the Big Yellow Storage warehouse to sleep in the freezing container.

Jule said she began living in the box three months ago after her relationship broke down with Ainsley, who is rated at £15million.

She said: "It's a metal container with no windows or carpet. There is no toilet or washing facilities. My son Ainsley could buy me a flat with two weeks or two month's wages.

"But the money's gone to his head and I'm in this position. My son plays for Arsenal and I am homeless and in a storage unit.

"It's not a home. I know what home feels like — to be able to shower, brush your teeth and sit in your room.

"All that I miss — but most of all I miss my family. It's horrible. I just want to know what I've done wrong."

Jule said she lives in fear that warehouse staff will realise she is sleeping in the container and turn her out on the street.

She said: "I wait until everyone has gone home and slip into the unit when it is dark. It is heartbreaking.

"The area is covered in snow and it's not been above freezing for days. I heard a homeless man died here overnight on Thursday."

Jule sat on a bare mattress on the container's floor and told how she struggled as a single mum to raise Ainsley and charity worker Cordi in council houses in and around Ilford, East London.

All around her are bags of family photos, including dog-eared pictures of Ainsley playing football as a toddler. Pushed into a box are his first contracts with the Gunners.

Jule told how when the boys were growing up she was sometimes so poor that she went hungry so they could eat.

Ainsley was spotted by Arsenal scouts and signed for the club's academy when he was six.

All her sacrifices appeared to have paid off when in December 2014 he made his debut for The Gunners aged 17 in the Champions League against Galatasaray.

Four days later he made his Premier League debut in a 4-1 victory over Newcastle United. Afterwards he paid tribute to God and his mum in an interview on Arsenal's website.

He said: "I want to thank my family and God mostly for putting me here." Asked what he would do with his match shirt, he said: "I think I'll frame it and give it to my mum."

What went wrong? Sigh!

Lady Survives Ghastly Accident As Vehicle Falls Off A Bridge (Photos)

Posted: 05 Mar 2018 03:16 AM PST

A young lady is filled with thanks to God after surviving a ghastly motor accident while on her way to Kaduna State for a church programme.

The vehicle she boarded fell off a bridge as the driver was trying to avoid a head-on-collision with an oncoming trailer. The vehicle was badly mangled as it fell into a water body down the bridge.

Excited Queen Ike who survived the accident and celebrated her birthday yesterday - took to Facebook to share the good news.

Read her testimony below:

"Hmmmm………..Can't believe I am actually saying Happy Birthday to me. I OWE GOD EVERYTHING. Apparently, the devil had planned to make me rest in peace before this day but how I got out of it, I can't tell.

I have never been in a near death situation soo much as I did last Sunday, just 1 week before my birthday.

Guys, on my way to Kaduna with four other people for a church programme, we were all busy making corrections on the flyer that we had to share at the venue, next thing we heard was tires screeching and our car swerving from left to right. Infront of us was a trailer who had left his lane, swerved into ours and destabilized our driver who then tried to dodge a head on collision.

At that point, our car after many turns, leaped off the bridge and dropped from the top of that bridge down to the river…………..All the while, we were all screaming and MY GOD, that fall was like eternity cause we had no idea where or what we were falling into……..The scariest part was the impact, can't even explain it……….but GUESS WHAT? Five of us all came out alive. Did I mention we had a generator filled with fuel in the boot of the car? I mean we fell from there, inside the river, see the height!!

The trailer driver even had to go report himself to the police thinking he had killed people, according to him, he didn't see us coming. Even road safety, when they were informed said they were just coming to pack dead bodies, people who came down to help couldn't believe we were all safe. We were told that severally has accidents occurred at that same spot with cars falling into that particular river and for all the times, either the car or the people inside the car disappears, then some of the bodies will be found in far away river Niger or none of them will come out alive.

What happened was nothing short of a miracle, none of our bones were broken, just few stitches and bruises. How we survived, I don't know. Honestly, there is soo much to say but I can only say THANK YOU JESUS.

To my totally awesome family, amazing friends and colleagues that God has blessed me with, I say may my God continue to enrich you the more. (And you see how this life works, just few days after this happened, I didn't even tell anyone except few friends and family, but somehow, people I haven't spoken with in a long time started reaching out to me just to know how I was doing, that touched me. I think we should always learn to work with our instincts, when your heart says, call this person or talk to that person, please do, cause you don't know the battle the person is fighting at that point and how far your concern will go to help him/her, even without knowing it).

So on this day, I've never been more grateful, I AM ALIVE.

I love this woman I've become; I've seen God break protocols for her and bless her with favour and grace. Today I'll always celebrate her and I want you all to join me and thank this God. HAPPY BLESSED BIRTHDAY TO ME"

Did Patience Jonathan Do Money Ritual?

Posted: 05 Mar 2018 12:11 AM PST

Opinion in The Punch
Is Nigeria accursed? I can't say. But I'm sure Nigeria is sick. Nigeria is empty like a vase without flowers. Some retrogressive forces won't just stop doing a number on her. She is not Midas. Midas was a man. Everything Nigeria touches rusts. When life-changing ideologies, products, concepts arrive in Nigeria, they die.

It is curious, but this is the way we crookedly are.

The interiors of our airplanes are like the sties of drunken pigs. Our highways are pathways to the grave. Our vehicles are coffins. Our telephony is bedlam. Our medicines kill. Our fuel fuels chaos. Our schools devalue. The few concepts and products that remain true to form include arms, ammunition, hard drugs, prostitution and 'yahoo-yahoo'.

What's yahoo? Long before it became popular in the US in 1994 when Jerry Yang and David Filo coined Yahoo from the phrase, "Yet Another Hierarchically Organised Oracle," the word 'yahoo' had an etymological meaning traceable to the 18th Century when Jonathan Swift made it popular in his work, Gulliver's Travels. In the novel, Swift refers to a yahoo as a brute in a human form. Aside from the backronym, "Yahoo," which is the language of the internet, and yahoo's etymological connotation of brutishness, the word has been bastardised in Nigeria.

Yahoo, in the street parlance of the young, urbane Nigerian youths, has nothing to do with the limitless benefits and possibilities of the Internet. Like our Midas-to-rust penchant, the word, "yahoo", has assumed the toga of an internet horror in Nigeria. Someone said ex-Nigerian footballer, Jay Jay Okocha, was so good that his parents named him twice. Could it thus be said that the sorrows inflicted on victims by young Nigerians who engage in internet fraud called 'yahoo-yahoo' are so grievous that the cyberfraud was named twice?

I became sick the other day I listened to an online audio war between some 'yahoo-yahoo' boys and their female sidekicks popularly referred to as Olosho! This recent coinage, olosho, has no root in pristine Yoruba language and culture. Olosho is another name for a young, aggressive, urbane prostitute. In the online exchange that is now viral, the voice of a young lady comes up, lamenting the rate at which 'yahoo-yahoo' boys were killing oloshos for money-making rituals. The lady advised fellow oloshos to 'wise up' and be ready to ensnarl, fleece and kill 'yahoo-yahoo' boys, too. Later, the voices of some 'yahoo-yahoo' boys came up, cursing and lambasting oloshos, in general. The 'yahoo-yahoo' boys vehemently reaffirmed their vow to kill more oloshos for money rituals, stressing that oloshos 'come for the money o' and would do anything to sleep with as many as possible 'yahoo-yahoo' boys. Without a speck of compunction, the boys wantonly bragged about killing people and using their heads for money rituals, relishing the prospects of getting more heads to use for money rituals. This is the bread of sorrow being eaten by our youths today.

But, is money ritualism real? I don't think so. I'm not saying that African juju is not efficacious. I'm only saying that it has its limitations, and its limitation includes money ritualism. The noise about the efficacy of money ritualism is balderdash. Our forefathers once claimed that the gods told them to kill newborn twins and albinos. While this inhuman act persisted, sacrifices were made to the gods, and people rejoiced after each sacrifice was 'accepted' by the gods. But when the gods saw the firepower from the arsenal (not Arsene Wenger's Arsenal o) of the White man, they repented and became born again. If an aborigine had told the elders of the time that it was inhuman to kill twins and albinos, his head would have been severed in Imogun, the Yoruba's Place of Skulls. People's beliefs aren't always in tandem with the will of God. Most often when people commit sin, they do so with style and zeal. If African juju doesn't have its limitations, why did all African gods fail when the White man came enslaving? Or, didn't the people call to the gods?

I have no respect for Nigerians politicians. I take their words with a pinch of salt. But I agree with the position of the representative, Osun-Central senatorial district in the Senate, Prof Olusola Adeyeye, who, taunting money ritualism, volunteered to put his neck on the chopping block for money ritual – with the proviso that the money his chopped head produces should be given to the Osun State Government. I make bold to say that 'Yahoo-yahoo' boys are just chopping off victims' heads in vain, there's nothing like money ritual, but they won't know until the heads are off. With the rate heads are being severed across the country, there should've been a new set of nouveau riche. Generally, all we have among 'yahoo-yahoo' boys are 'two-million-naira-rich' rogues, who exploited the gullibility of victims on the Internet.

What's the value of labour in Nigeria? How much does the most powerful man in the country, President Muhammadu Buhari, earn? Deriving its powers from Section 32(d), Part 1 of the Third Schedule of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission fixed the basic monthly salary of the Nigerian president at N292,892.08 while that of the vice-president is N252,063.04. In all, the President's basic salary and allowances is N1,171,568.33 per month and that of the vice-president is N1,010,524.17 per month. Annually, the total take home of the President is N14,058,820.00 and the vice-president's is N12,126,290.00.

Then, how come the wife of ex-President Goodluck Jonathan possesses funds that surpass the salaries of all Nigerian heads of state since independence? A few days ago, Mrs. Patience Jonathan, who had huffed all these years about the innocence of her wealth, offered to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission an out-of-court "amicable resolution of all cases" the agency has against her. According to the EFCC investigation, Mama Peace, as she's fondly called, spent in a day shopping spree in China, $36,458.40. Probably, Jonathan could have an idea of the financial worth of Patience, but the EFCC insists the wealth of the University of Port Harcourt graduate is fraudulent. The EFCC has traced the sums of $11.8m, $6.7m and $31.5m to the former Bayelsa civil servant. These monies exclude her enormous real estate interests. In faraway Honduras, Rosa Bonilla, wife of ex-President Porfirio Lobo was not as lucky; she was detained on charges of embezzling merely $500,000 in government funds.

Interestingly, Mrs. Jonathan had explained that the monies were got from gifts donated by friends and well-wishers in 15 years, adding that she couldn't even remember a number of the generous donors, some of whom gave gifts as small as N250,000. The EFCC has linked some accounts to Mama Peace through a former presidential aide, Dudafa Owei.

Could the contents of these bank accounts be the reason why Patience wailed at the 2015 Peoples Democratic Party presidential rally in Lagos, "Lagosians, they send you to jail, they send your fathers to jail, they've come back again; they'll send you back to jail. Me, as a woman, I reject to carry food to my husband in jail, I reject it! Lagos women, are you ready to carry food to jail? Will they change? Why are they looking for your votes today?…(Singing) If you vote APC, na your prison, if you vote Buhari, na your prison. If you vote PDP, e go better!?" Having vehemently pleaded innocent to the EFCC's corruption charges, where could Patience's wealth have come from? Yahoo-yahoo ritual? State treasury? Well, I believe her story; I believe that some whimpering donors donated the monies in appreciation of the lullabies her velvety voice sang to them. She should be left to enjoy her gifts; Buhari has lost the prison keys to snakes.

Chai, diaris God o!

We’ll Reduce Interest Rates - FG assures rice millers

Posted: 04 Mar 2018 09:46 PM PST

The Federal Government has assured rice millers of plans to ensure reduction in interest rates paid on loans.

"On the reduction of interest rates on loans requested by the millers, I think it is right. It will be done."

Kebbi State Governor Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, who is the chairman of the Presidential Task Force on Rice, gave the assurance at the weekend in Lagos at a stakeholders' meeting with Rice Distributors Association of Nigeria and Rice Millers.

He said the President Muhammadu Buhari administration would ensure rice availability and affordability.

He said based on the contributions of stakeholders, it was apparent that what Nigerians wanted was not making subsidy available on rice production, but making it affordable and accessible such that they could produce rice that would compete with imported ones.

"The mandate given to this task force, which is under the leadership of President Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo is to ensure the country has self-sufficiency in rice and wheat production.

"But so far, stakeholders within the value chain, either as farmers, distributors or millers are not talking about subsidy. What they are saying is that help us tell President Buhari that we will like to have rice at a competitive price with the so-called imported rice. This has to do with affordability. I can tell you that the President is committed to this," the governor said.

He said the National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON) had responsibilities to discharge, adding that the government would intensify efforts in that regard.

National President of Rice Distributors Association of Nigeria Deaconess Olufunmulayo Akinsanya implored the Federal Government to assist millers in producing at a cost that could be afforded by the less-privileged.

Iyaloja-General Chief Folashade Tinubu Ojo said there is hunger in the land, urging governments to ensure efforts are intensified to make Nigerians feed well.

4 Best Ways to Promote an Event Online

Posted: 04 Mar 2018 09:46 PM PST

Promoting an event online is really not as difficult and complex as some might think. Jumia Travel shares 4 best ways to promote an event online.

Create Content to Promote Your Event
This is where content marketing comes in. Your content marketing efforts should align with the event you are promoting. As much as possible, plug in details of the event in all your content marketing efforts so the repetition will help keep your event in the mind of your readers or audience. Additionally, you can go a step further by creating unique videos for the event and posting them alongside the promotional content for the event.

Add the Event to Your Email Signature
Many might already know about this tool for online event promotion but the key is to be tasteful about it. Don't use your email signature for event promotion in a way that puts those who receive your emails off, be creative about it and do it in a way that can pique their interest and compel them to find out more about the event. The main thing to keep in mind to achieve this, is to avoid a very long and tedious email signature; keep it brief, simple and yet professional. You can also make use of GIFs that get the point across in an animated and interesting way.

Create an Event Page
This should be the hub for information about your event and it doesn't even have to be overly fancy, just decent and presentable. What really matters is that all relevant information about your event can be sourced from the site and any issues that your potential guests might be worrying about is addressed. The best part about creating an event page is that you can also create trackable URLs for your website and landing pages to help collect data on which methods of promotion are working best. You will thus be able to determine which method has the highest ROI.

Social media is important for online promotion and Facebook is one social media giant (over 2 billion monthly active users) you should not neglect in your online marketing or promotional efforts. The best way to promote an event with Facebook is to create an event page on Facebook and the best part about the Facebook event page feature is that it offers plenty of useful tools to use to help promote your event. It also helps you build a unique space for your community to stay updated on your event by enabling you add images and videos related to your event, update event details, keep a list of who's attending and remind users about the event as it gets closer.

How to Win the Battles that Matter Most in Your Life

Posted: 04 Mar 2018 07:51 AM PST

Do you know how powerful you really are as a man? You may sometimes feel weak in the face of life's demands and pressures, but God has created you in His image, placing the powerful heart of warrior within you. You've been made to fight for what's right.

It's only when you take on the battles that God wants you to fight – about issues that have eternal value – that you can truly come alive as a man.

Here's how you can fight and win the battles that matter most:

Join the spiritual war around you.
A war between the good and evil sides of the spiritual realm is taking place around you constantly. If you don't actively engage in spiritual battles, you'll be especially vulnerable to evil attacks that can harm you and negatively impact every part of your life. Don't settle for sitting on the sidelines of fights when God wants you to be on the front lines, helping to overcome evil with good. Rather than focusing on your weaknesses, focus on God, who stands ready to empower you to be strong in every battle you face. Pray for the courage and help you need to fight spiritual battles every day. As you do, expect God to transform you into a stronger man who becomes more like Jesus Christ every day.

Fight for causes that are greater than yourself.
God is looking for men who are willing to join His redemptive work in this fallen world, and God hopes that you'll be one of them. Look beyond the immediate concerns of your own life and take advantage of the opportunities God has given you to fight for causes that have more far-reaching significance, such as: integrity, courage, justice, compassion, and spiritual truth.

Put your God-given strengths to use in the world. Don't waste the gifts that God has given you to use in serving Him and loving the people around you. Pray for the wisdom to discern the best specific ways you can put your gifts into action to make the world a better place.

Fight against three dangerous attitudes.
Lust says, "I want it." Entitlement says, "I deserve it." Pride says, "I can handle it." But these three attitudes are spiritually dangerous, because they can trick you into trading the power God has given you for temptations that can lead you to sin and weaken yourself. Fight against those attitudes by humbly admitting the reality of your human vulnerabilities and weaknesses and relying on God's strength in every situation. Fight lust by wanting God more than anything lesser. Fight entitlement by keeping in mind that the only thing you truly deserve as a sinner is death, but God has graciously given you life and blessings that you don't deserve because of Jesus' death on the Cross for your sins. Fight pride by recognizing that you can't really handle any situation without God's help.

Choose to be led by the Holy Spirit rather than your emotions.
Your emotions are unreliable because they reflect only a limited perspective on your life and they're constantly changing according to your circumstances. But you can always rely on the Holy Spirit to give you reliable guidance that reflects God's complete and unchanging wisdom. So refuse to base your daily decisions on emotions (such as anger, pride, anxiety, and sorrow). Instead, ask the Holy Spirit to meet you where you are and give you the wisdom you need in every situation.

Watch out for small compromises that can lead to big destruction.
Whenever you face the temptation to make a small moral compromise, remember that doing so sets you heading in the wrong direction in life, making it easier to gradually move farther away from God until you find yourself sinning in bigger ways that can destroy you. So avoid small compromises as often as you can, and after you make a mistake, correct your course as soon as possible by confessing your sin, repenting of it, and receiving God's forgiveness and help to overcome the sin.

Choose your battles wisely.
Rather than depleting your energy and time fighting battles that don't have eternal value (such as seeing how well you can play a sport or how fast you can rise up the corporate ladder), focus most of your strength on leading the people around you into righteousness. Don't settle for being strong at what doesn't last and weak at what does last. Fight for what matters most.

Put on the full armor of God.
Prepare yourself well to fight evil with good by putting on: the helmet of salvation (deriving confidence from the fact that your relationship with Jesus makes you right with God), the breastplate of righteousness (relying on the power of Jesus' righteousness at work within you), shield of faith(believing what God says about who you are), and the belt of truth(standing boldly on God's truth to resist the lies in this fallen world). Stand on the gospel of peace (relying on God's redemptive power working through your life as you serve) and wield the sword of the Spirit (using the Bible's truths as weapons to fight for good purposes by applying them to your life).

Learn from your mistakes and failures.
Don't let get stuck in regret, guilt, shame, anger, self-pity, or despair after you experience failure or make a mistake. Instead, learn from what you've gone through by repenting of your wrong decisions, seeking God's guidance for the future, and moving forward while trusting God each step of the way. Keep in mind that no matter how badly you may have failed in the past, God still wants to work through your life to accomplish good purposes in the world.

Surrender your life to God every day.
Make a daily habit of surrendering your own plans to God, inviting God to use your life each day to accomplish His plans for you (which are greater than what you could imagine on your own). As God shows you which battles He wants you to fight, do so in the confidence that God will use your life in ways that will powerfully impact the world.
