I wasn't expecting to be this popular - Frank Edwards | Mr Olumide's Blog

Posted: 09 Dec 2017 03:37 AM PST

Gospel artist Frank Edwards, in a new interview with Punch says he was not expecting fame and success from music making.

According to the singer, his intentions at the beginning of his career was to make people happy via his music.

Read his interview below;

'I never planned for this; I had no idea it would be like this. Some things would happen to some people and they would say it was dream come true. In my own case, I didn't even have any dream. I just wanted to make music for people around me to listen to. I just wanted to do what I loved and I was okay if it was just one person that would tell me my music touched his soul. God decided to bless me and take my music all over the world, I am grateful for it' he said.

On gospel artistes doing music just for money;

If you are a gospel minister, you have to know you are in a ministry.

If you are in it for the money, you may be disappointed. It is not that you will not make money in the long run but that is not the focus, the focus is to preach the gospel of music through your music.

When your focus is to first do something that would sell, you would lose focus. If you want to do it for the business, then try secular music. You need to be called to be a gospel artiste because you would have to endure when the money is not coming and you have to wait on the Lord and learn to use your faith. You would even be popular and you would still be climbing bikes.

Buhari Says 'Economy Wreckers' Are Jostling For 2019

Posted: 09 Dec 2017 03:03 AM PST

President Muhammadu Buhari declared in Kano State that those who 'wrecked the economy' are the same people who are now jostling to contest in 2019.

The president spoke yesterday at an interactive session with a cross section of Kano society inside the Government House, as part of his two-day official visit to the state.

In attendance at the session were governors of Kano and Jigawa states, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje and Alhaji Abubakar Badaru, respectively, as well as the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammad Sanusi II.

In an inference to the PDP's time in government, president Buhari identified the fuel subsidy regime as one of the means by which the country's resources was siphoned.

In Kano, the president admitted that of his three campaign promises, defeating corruption and corrupt people remain the most difficult challenges so far.

He acknowledged that the fight against corruption has not been full achieved.

Buhari, who asked for understanding, indicated his desire to reform the society for the sake of the youths and the country as a whole, even as he explained that under democracy, fighting corruption is a complex exercise than in a military regime.

He recounted his personal experience in fighting corruption which, at the end, he was also, jailed by the forces of corruption.

"When I was Head of State, I locked up the people from and took them to Kirikiri and asked them to prove their innocence.

"Only two of them were without guilt-a former minister from Hadejia-Bilyaminu Usman and Mallam Adamu Ciroma.

"But also, the forces of these corrupt people also ensured that I was also locked up and detained for three years," Buhari said.

The president noted that things are a lot better for Nigerian farmers and that his administration has recorded tremendous improvement in agriculture.

He also said his administration has defeated the Boko Haram in the North East and explained that nothing can be achieved in a state of insecurity.

Buhari recalled how, in the past, insurgents besieged places of worships and even markets and universities to kill and maim innocent people.

"It is either that these people do not know Allah or they have failed to interpret properly the teachings of Allah."

Robbers Attack Bullion Van In Delta, Cart Away Millions

Posted: 09 Dec 2017 02:18 AM PST

There was pandemonium yesterday in parts of Asaba, the Delta State capital after bandits attacked a bullion van and made away with millions of naira.

The bullion van belongs to a first generation bank in Anambra State. Sounds of gunshots echoed during the operation forcing motorists and passers-by to scamper for safety.

The development which made motorists to abandon vehicles in the middle of the Benin-Asaba dual carriageway resulted in traffic gridlock.

The Nation learnt that the policemen escorting the bullion van engaged the robbers in a shootout, but were overpowered by the superior firepower of the robbers.

An eyewitness who pleaded anonymity said the siren blaring bullion van was ambushed by a gang of robbers in a convoy of three vehicles which included a grey Sienna van. "The police escorts numbering eight subsequently fled the scene of the incident," the eyewitness said.

Another eyewitness said: "The hoodlums came in about three cars and intercepted the bullion van at the junction. They started shooting and innocent people took to their heels to avoid being victims of stray bullets.

"Even vehicles on the expressway were making detour as a result of the attack. The officers attached to the van responded but I think the hoodlums had superior fire arms because the officers soon disappeared, giving the bandits an unfettered access to the cash stocked in the bullion van."

Delta police image maker, DSP Andrew Aniamaka, who confirmed the incident said "internal connivance" cannot be ruled out, lamenting that some commercial banks were still in the habit of conveying money without using bullet-proof vans despite repeated warnings by the police command.

He said the van was coming from Onitsha and heading towards Agbor, adding that the bullion van had made stops at Awka, and Onitsha in Anambra State. His words: "I suspect internal connivance. This is in spite of the warning issued by the state command for commercial banks to convey money following approved guidelines.

The bullion van is not bullet proof. It is a configured bullion van" Continuing, he said: "Who informed the hoodlums that they were carrying cash through that route? It is quite unfortunate that banks are still using configured bullion vans without bullet proof, subjecting their personnel and escort officers to unnecessary risk.

"As we speak now, investigation is on, but I cannot tell you how much cash the bullion van was carrying before the attack. What I can assure is that the command will put necessary measures in place to bring whoever was involved directly or indirectly to justice."

Aniamaka also confirmed that no life was lost and no injury was sustained during the shootout.

6 Guaranteed Ways To Deal With Sore Throat

Posted: 08 Dec 2017 10:03 PM PST

A sore throat is more prevalent this time of the year because the weather is dry. Thus quite a number of people will be suffering from it. If your saliva goes down like sandpaper, and every cough makes you feel pain, then you have sore throat. Here are some of the remedies for sore throat.

Wash with salt water
Saltwater can calm inflammation by getting rid of the acidity that causes throat irritation. It may also help draw infections or irritants to the surface of your throat, where your body is better able to deal with them. You should gargle every hour or two.

Drink extra-cold liquids
Drink ice cold liquids can both numb your throat and calm some of the inflammation that's causing you pain.

Avoid acidic foods
Acidic foods exacerbate your sore throat. Therefore, avoid fried foods and citrus fruits like oranges and lemons.

Lemon and water
Mix a teaspoon of lemon juice in a cup water for this home remedy for sore throats.juice will help shrink swollen throat tissue and create an unfriendly environment for viruses and bacteria so they do not thrive.

Enjoy a drop of honey
Warm tea that is sweetened with honey can help soothe your irritated throat. Tea also keeps you hydrated, which is another important step in treating a sore throat. Make a cup of tea and add honey to deal with a sore throat.

Stay hydrated
Staying hydrated is an important part of treating a sore throat. When you're dehydrated, your body can't produce enough saliva and mucus to keep your throat naturally lubricated. This will make the swelling and inflammation worse.

Prophet Fufeyin gives N3.3m to ladies deported from Libya

Posted: 08 Dec 2017 10:03 PM PST

While at the service, Prophet Jeremiah Omoto Fufeyin led by the spirit made reference to some Libyan pr*stitute that have gone through terrible experience and have been in prison with a request that if any of them is here, they should come out for the day of their deliverance is now.

The ladies came out and the man of God said there is another person who I can't see now. It took a lot of probing for the girls to realise that he was referring to a baby carried by one of them that could not make it. The mother of the baby broke down in tears in affirmation.

After series of authentication of various prophecies like telling them that someone had a dream which was confirmed to be a dream of a man coming to save them and wipe their tears away, the man of God provided them with N200,000 to go to the 'mountain' which is an euphemism for spiritual cleansing and re-orientation to be deeply tutored on the tenets of the Christian Faith until his return from a trip to Europe.

US based Cameroonian writer Patrice Nganang arrested for criticising Biya | Mr Olumide's Blog

Posted: 08 Dec 2017 10:02 PM PST

A celebrated Cameroonian writer, Patrice Nganang, who wrote a piece critical of the government's handling of a separatist crisis in its Anglophone region was detained at Douala airport on Thursday, his wife and lawyer said.

Nganang, a prize-winning poet, professor and author who lives in New York, was due to board a Kenya Airways flight to Nairobi and then onwards to Harare to join his wife on Thursday but never arrived.

After 24 hours of trying to track him down, Nyasha Bakare said he had been found by his lawyers at a government detention center in Yaounde, the capital.

"He's apparently OK. That's the main thing," Bakare said, adding that the authorities appeared to be preparing for a legal hearing.

His lawyer Emmanuel Simh said:
"He is accused of insulting the president of the republic, and after the hearings we will be able to give further information."

A spokesman at the government's communications department was not immediately available to comment.

Last week the government ordered thousands of villagers to leave their homes in the Anglophone Southwest region as it deployed troops to root out armed separatists.

The move marked an escalation of a year-long crackdown on peaceful protests in the English-speaking western part of the country that has killed dozens of civilians and forced thousands to flee to Nigeria.

"Are we going towards the forced relocation of populations and the creation of (refugee) camps?" Nganang wrote in Paris-based Jeune Afrique on Dec. 5, describing this as "offensive"."So bilingual Cameroonians can be enemies in a country whose president has never said a single speech in English?" he added.

President Paul Biya has ruled Cameroon since 1982 and plans to stand for another term next year. The separatist stirrings add to headaches over the economy slowing sharply since 2014 and attacks in the north by Islamist militant group Boko Haram which have strained the military.

The linguistic divide harks back to the end of World War One, when the League of Nations divided the former German colony of Kamerun between the allied French and British victors.

Biya's 35-year rule has grown increasingly intolerant of dissent, with opposition activists, journalists and intellectuals routinely arrested and sometimes charged.

In April, a Cameroonian reporter for Radio France International was jailed for 10 years by a military court on terrorism charges, including for failing to report acts of terrorism to authorities.

The verdict attracted international criticism.

Calif.lawmaker resigns after woman accused him of masturbating at her | Mr Olumide's Blog

Posted: 08 Dec 2017 10:02 PM PST

Assemblyman Matt Dababneh said Friday he is resigning from office at the end of the month, a decision that comes four days after he was publicly accused of masturbating in front of a lobbyist and other inappropriate behavior.

In a resignation letter, Dababneh said the allegations against him are untrue and said he expected a legislative investigation would "bring to light and into focus the significant and persuasive evidence of my innocence."

Dababneh, a Democrat from Woodland Hills, told The Times that his resignation should not be construed as a tacit admission of wrongdoing.

"My stepping down isn't out of guilt or out of fear. It's out of an idea that I think it's time for me to move on to new opportunities," Dababneh said in an interview. He said that in the current environment, "it'd be very hard for me to represent my district and be able to pass the type of legislation that would be meaningful."

His accussers
Sacramento-based lobbyist Pamela Lopez publicly alleged Dababneh followed her into a bathroom, masturbated in front of her and urged her to touch him during a January 2016 party in Las Vegas.

Another woman, Jessica Yas Barker, alleged that Dababneh routinely spoke of his sexual exploits and made disparaging comments about women while she worked as his subordinate in Sherman's office from June 2009 until December 2010.

Dababneh said both allegations are false. He said he would participate in an ongoing Assembly investigation into Lopez's allegation that will be conducted by an outside firm.

"I look forward to a report coming out," Dababneh said. "I was not the one that engaged in that type of activity."

Dababneh's attorney sent Lopez a cease-and-desist letter prior to her public accusation. The lawmaker said he has not decided if he will sue Lopez for damages as stated in the letter, saying he first wants to see the results of the investigation.

Senator Arise Freed By Kidnappers

Posted: 08 Dec 2017 09:38 PM PST

Senator Ayo Arise who was on Sunday kidnapped by gunmen has regained his freedom. Sources said Arise himself told some people in the state that he had been freed.

Details of how he was released were still sketchy as of press time. It could also not be ascertained where he was released and if any ransom was paid.

Efforts to reach him by Punch were unsuccessful while no family was available for comments.

By Thursday, it was gathered that the kidnappers had reduced their ransom from N80m to N50m.

However, the President of Oye Progressives Union which is the umbrella association of the indigenes of Oye, Mr. Akin Omole, confirmed the release of the All Progressives Congress chieftain.

"Yes, I've heard from him and he told us that he has regained his freedom. We are immensely grateful to God Almighty and to everyone who acted one way or the other for his release," he said in a telephone chat with newsmen.

Omole added, "Oye Ekiti is highly grateful and we are saying thank you. OPU on behalf of the Oye Ekiti community is grateful to everyone who contributed in several ways towards ensuring that our illustrious son is freed without being harmed."

Arise was kidnapped on Sunday along Okene-Abuja highway while travelling back to Abuja from his country-home in Oye-Ekiti.

Kemi Adeosun to Suspended SEC Boss: "I Won’t Succumb To Blackmail"

Posted: 08 Dec 2017 09:28 PM PST

The Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun, has said no amount of blackmail by the suspended Director-General of the Securities and Exchange Commission, Mr Mounir Gwarzo, would make her stop the Administrative Panel of Inquiries probe of the embattled SEC DG.

The minister said this during a chat with journalists at the ministry's headquarters in Abuja.

Adeosun described as untrue, claims by the suspended DG, that she attempted to stop the forensic audit by SEC into the activities of Oando Plc.

She wondered why Gwarzo could resort to peddling falsehood when in fact he was given a right of fair hearing through an administrative query.

Adeosun said that she decided to speak now to set the records straight, because the actions so far taken by Gwarzo since his suspension by the government is capable of eroding investors' confidence in the capital market.

She described the allegations against Gwarzo as weighty as the ministry is in possession of records that shows inconsistencies in the handling of the affairs of the commission by the suspended DG.

Adeosun said, "Mr. Gwarzo has alleged that his suspension was due to his refusal to stop the forensic audit of Oando Plc.

"I would not have ordinarily responded in view of his responsibility for the approval of the Constitution and Terms of Reference for the Administrative Panel of Inquiry into the allegations against Mr. Gwarzo.

"However, given the degree of speculations and the potential impact on the capital market, there is a need to set the records straight as follows:

"The integrity of the capital market is vital to the growth of the Nigerian economy and must be managed in an orderly and transparent manner to ensure investors' confidence. Its leadership must maintain and be seen to maintain the highest standards of integrity.

"That the original decision taken by SEC on October 20, 2017 to suspend the shares of Oando Plc and conduct a forensic audit, was approved and endorsed by the Federal Ministry of Finance.

"The SEC team, led by Mr. Mounir presented adequate evidence to the minister of finance and her team, that Oando Plc had a clear case to answer with regard to infractions of the Investment and Securities Act."

Couple trick retiree into giving them $3million | Mr Olumide's Blog

Posted: 08 Dec 2017 12:42 PM PST

Hiep Cong Van and Thy Minh Phan are headed to federal prison after tricking an elderly man into loaning them $3 million, according to The Oregonian.

The victim, identified by the publication only as R.W., gave the couple the money under the assumption that it was to help operate a landscaping business in Colorado and cover some legal fees.

R.W. is said to have met Van through the business before moving to Oregon to enjoy retirement.
Instead the couple used the stolen funds to live large in Las Vegas, gambling at the Aria, Bellagio, Caesars Palace and MGM Grand.

Van and Phan spent more than three years "bleeding him for all that he had," The Oregonian reported, citing a statement from Assistant U.S. Attorney Scott E. Bradford made in federal court on Thursday.

The victim wired the funds to Van and Phan in Colorado and Nevada. He also purchased cashier's checks, according to the outlet, and sent some money by mail.

R.W. reportedly signed a contract stating Van and Phan, 39, would repay the loans with interest.

The couple failed to uphold their end of the deal, and on Thursday Van was sentenced to three years and one month in prison. The prosecution reportedly went into the trial seeking a sentence of four years and nine months.

You committed a crime that caused a devastating loss to a perfectly innocent man who's not likely to be repaid," U.S. District Judge Anna J. Brown said during sentencing.
"The man put faith in you…because he trusted you. And you repeatedly abused that trust."

Phan was sentenced in November to one year and nine months behind bars.

She's set to begin serving her time next week, The Oregonian reported.

A Nigerian man, who pretended to be a beautiful female American soldier on Facebook, has been arrested by Thailand authorities for internet romance fraud.

The Nigerian, known as Antonio Jose Carlos or 'Star Boy' in his community, had been targetting lonely Thai men and defrauding them of their savings with promises of love.

According to reports , the 35-year-old was arrested alongside his 20-year-old Thai girlfriend, Sukanya Sakaew, in an apartment in Chaengwattana.

Thai Police allegedly found six mobile phones and a few bank books at the apartment, which had a circulating fund of THB3 million (about $92,000).

Police investigators said, "Star Boy" was engaged in ongoing conversations with 38 middle-aged men, adding that the amount he conned off his targets were yet to be ascertained.

Reports further said five members of the 'Star Boy' gang – all Nigerians – were arrested after an investigation.

Steve Harvey sued for charity fraud | Mr Olumide's Blog

Posted: 08 Dec 2017 12:42 PM PST

Steve Harvey is being sued by a man who claims the popular TV personality ripped him off in a deal to raise millions of dollars for charity, TMZ reports.

Vincent Dimmock alleges Harvey hired him to raise $20 million for the Steve and Marjorie Foundation and other ventures, but was never paid his 12.5% cut that was agreed upon, according to the suit obtained by the gossip site.

Dimmock reportedly delivered $1 million through his high-profile connections, but Harvey refused to pay him the commission and Dimmock then claimed in the suit that Harvey appeared to have no intentions of paying him at all.

Harvey allegedly blamed Oprah and Tyler Perry for bad financial advice when meeting with an investor introduced by Dimmock in May. He also made disparaging comments about women during the business discussion, according to the suit.

Dimmock claims Harvey was in bad financial shape with his foundation because of several P.R. mishaps and a meeting with President Trump.

Todd Frank, Harvey's longtime agent, said in a statement to TMZ that "It sounds fake."

I became pregnant after 4 Arab men raped me -Libya returnees narrate harrowing experiences | Mr Olumide's Blog

Posted: 08 Dec 2017 10:52 AM PST

Miss Loveth Ekumabo, 25-year-old Libya returnee, has blamed her father's incestuous behaviour for her decision to flee to Libya, at least, for safety from her father; also in search of greener pasture.

The fate of Edo-born Ekumabo can best be likened to the character of King Odewale in Ola Rotimi's "The gods are not to blame", who was to kill his father in order to marry his own mother.

Her case is jumping from frying pan into fire. She has, in her life, gone through bitterness, especially her stay in faraway Libya, where she undergone forced labour and made a subject of serial rape.

Ekumabo, from Uhunwode local government, is one of the hundreds of Edo indigenes that have been repatriated from Libya. They are currently in the custody of the state government undergoing rehabilitation for effective integration into society.

Aside her traumatic experience during the seven-month sojourn in the North Africa country, pregnant Ekumabo, may have to live with the pain of not knowing the father of her unborn child.

In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), she cursed all those who raped her in Libya, including her biological father, whose incestuous action at home, she claimed, was responsible for her present predicament.

Narrating her ordeal, Ekumabo said her father's attempted acts of incest, drove her to Libya.

She alleged that the exposure of her father's attempted incestuous relationship with her resulted into a big family row.

"After I exposed what my father wanted to do to me, fight broke out at home and I had to run away for my safety.
"I went to stay with my friend who introduced me to the man that helped people to Europe.
"I did not have any money, I was made to swear to an oath in a shrine in Benin that I will pay back every kobo when I get to Europe.
"We agreed that I will pay back N200,000. I left Benin for Kano in April, 2017. From Kano we were transported in a Hilux truck through the dessert with no food and water to Agadez in Niger and from there to Tripoli in Libya..
"If you want to cross from Agadez to Tripoli without money you either get raped as a girl or get beaten up as a boy. The agency can also sell you out as slaves to get their money before you are allowed to cross to Tripoli with your new owner.
"I saw dead people; boys being killed; girls raped to death;and people sold as slaves."The worst part is that Nigerians are among those Arabs who treat fellow Nigerians badly.
"It was while I was about to cross to Tripoli that four Arab men raped me continuously without stop. After which I was allowed to cross to Tripoli where I discovered that I was pregnant.
"The Church Nigerians where Nigerians worship in Tripoli advised me to go back to Nigeria since I cannot do any other work here now that I am pregnant.
Sounding confused, Ekumabo, said she did not get any comfort and words of encouragement from her immediate family. Her biological mother forbade her to return home empty handed.

"When I called my family that I was coming back, my mother asked them to tell me to stay back and try my best to cross to Europe.
"But I said to myself that since she was not the one who sent me to Libya, she has no right to tell me to cross to Europe," she said.

She explained that the Edo State has advised her to keep the pregnancy and has promised to give her accommodation where she will stay be delivered of the baby.

Her story is not different from that of the hundreds of other Libya returnees, who were recently received by the Governor Godwin Obaseki.
Mr Harrison Okotie, 35, married and has two children is one of the returnees with gory story to tell.

Okotie, who hails from Ughelli South local government area of Delta, left everything in Benin, where he had lived all his life, before leaving for Libya in search of greener pasture to take care of his family.

He noted that his journey through the desserts without food and water and the inhuman treatment meted on him, made him realised that there is no place like home.

"I will never in my life think of leaving my country again. Whether there is work or no, I will stay here and manage with my family.
"The Nigerians held-up in Garian prisons are well over 4,000. The Libya authorities do not want to release them because they are making money from them.
"They will call you from prison and ask you to call your people in Nigeria to send money for them to release you. Even if you succeed in getting money from Nigeria, they still would not let you go."It is a big business. They are not happy that the United Nations and international bodies are helping to deport people to their countries. So they now keep Nigerians in their underground prisons.

According to him, am appealing to the federal government, UN and other international bodies to save Nigerians in Garian underground prisons.

He said:
"It was a horrible experience. One day a truck that carried 28 people, 15 of them died on the way due to lack of food and water.''

The story of 34-year old Miss Josephine Ajabor, also from Delta, is however strange.
She had taken her three- year old son, Thomas, with her to Libya in August.

Ajabor, a single mother, said paid N250,000 to her sponsor for herself and her son to Europe en-route Libya.

"I will forever continue to ask my son for forgiveness because of the suffering I subjected him to. No water, no food. But God kept him for me.
"The driver, who took us from Nigerian border, kept giving my son the water he poured into the radiator of the truck until we got to Libya.
"In the prisons they served us food without salt. God just kept my son alive for me and I am so grateful that I am alive to narrate my experience.''

Mr Sunday Ehiagina, another returnee, squandered his life savings on the trip to Libya.

Ehiagina, a native of Irrua in Esan Central local government area of Edo, said he owned and operated a shoe factory for seven years in Benin.

He had sold the factory, and used the proceeds to undertake a trip to Libya with his 19-year old pregnant wife, Blessing, to make 'quick money'
