I won’t be surprised if majority of dead migrants are Nigerians – President Buhari

Posted: 29 Nov 2017 04:26 AM PST

President Muhammadu Buhari has said that information available to him shows that only three of the 26 migrants who died in the Mediterranean and were buried in Italy recently were Nigerians.

He, however, said he would not be surprised if a majority of the deceased were Nigerians.

Buhari said this during a meeting he had with members of the Nigerian community in Cote d'Ivoire on Tuesday evening in Abidjan.

The President is in the country for the 5th European Union/African Union Summit.

He promised that his administration will do all within its powers to make the country more conducive in order to discourage youths from embarking on risky trips out of the country for greener pasture.

He said efforts would be made to ensure that there will be less Nigerians daring the Sahara Desert and the Mediterranean Sea and getting perished.

Buhari said, "It was announced that 26 Nigerians died but before they could proved that they were all Nigerians, they were buried.

"But the evidence I got from my Senior Special Assistant on Diaspora Affairs now is that only three were identified as Nigerians. But I won't be surprised if the majority of them were really Nigerians.

"For people to cross the Sahara Desert to go into shanty boats across the Mediterranean Sea, I think we will try and keep them at home.

"But for anyone who dared the desert and the Mediterranean without document to prove that he/she is a Nigerian, there is nothing we can do, absolutely nothing."

Man erroneously gets N10m in his account in Lagos, spends it

Posted: 29 Nov 2017 01:26 AM PST

The Chief Executive Officer of an oil and gas company, Olukunle Owolabi, was yesterday arraigned before a Lagos Magistrate's Court, sitting at Igbosere, for allegedly using the N10million erroneously deposited into his bank account.

The 53-year-old man, alongside his company, were charged before Magistrate F. O. Botoku.

The defendant, who resides in Ogudu GRA, Lagos, is facing a count charge of fraud preferred against him by the Police.

The prosecutor, Chinedu Njoku, told the court that he committed the alleged offence on April 5.

He said the incident occurred at 2, Tinubu Street, Lagos Island.

Njoku said at about 11a.m., the defendant fraudulently converted N10 million belonging to a bank, which was deposited into his account by Telecorev Nigeria Limited on March 31.

The prosecutor told the court that the defendant's account was last used by him in 2016 and when he suddenly got an alert from the bank, he transferred the entire money into his account in another bank and used it in paying off his debts.

'My defence' The defendant, during his arraignment, told the court that on March 31, he received an alert of N10m.

He continued: "When I got the alert, I thought it was from one of our customers or debtors so I decided to wait till I get a call from the bank or the person.

"When I didn't get any call, on April 4 I transferred the money to my account in another bank, which led to my account being frozen.

"It is a clear case of Criminal conspiracy by the bank and Telecorev to launder money and operate my account illegally without my consent."

He asked for the Telecorev account from which the money was transferred to be probed.

The law
According to Njoku, the offence committed is punishable under Section 285(5a) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

However, the defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Magistrate Botoku granted him bail in the sum of N1 million with two sureties in like sum.

She said the sureties must be gainfully employed and show evidence of payment of tax to Lagos State government with verification of addresses.

The case was adjourned to December 19.

Why We Have Not Paid The Whistle-blower – Lai Mohammed

Posted: 29 Nov 2017 01:16 AM PST

The Federal Government says it has not been able to pay the statutory 5% to the Ikoyi whistle blower due to controversy surrounding the claim. What's the controversy?

The minister of Information and Culture, Alh. Lai Mohammed made this known on Tuesday during his visit to Leadership Newspaper.

He said the issue is a bit complicated because two persons are currently laying claims to the amount and since the identity of the real owner cannot be disclosed, it behooves on the government to follow due process in arriving at the true owner of the money.

"It is a bit complicated because more than one person is claiming the money and we do not want to disclose the identity of the Whistle blower.

"We have a very unique situation in our hand at the moment; it is so complex and complicated. One said we should not pay the other and the other one has gone to court.

"Now we have the authentic whistle blower and fake whistle blower, we hope to find out the real person. Ordinarily, a whistle blower should be anonymous. However, we are working very closely to ensure that such thing never happens again."

Criminals Who Kidnap Students In Lagos Surrender Arms

Posted: 29 Nov 2017 12:56 AM PST

Militants terrorising parts of Lagos, Ogun and Ondo states submitted their arms on Monday evening to embrace Federal Government's Amnesty programme.

The militants were said to be behind the abduction of 6 Senior Secondary School (SSS) pupils of the Lagos Model College at Igbonla, near Epe in Lagos State; Arepo pipeline vandalisation and several attacks in the riverine areas of Ondo State.

The militants were led by Ogailo Iborry Young (aka O.C) to the Collection and Documentation of Arms Centre in Ajapa community in Ese-Odo Local Government Area of Ondo State.

They willingly dropped their arms and other weapons.

The event, witnessed by Deputy Governor and Chairman of Ondo State Amnesty Committee, Agboola Ajayi, representatives of Delta State government, the Commanding Officer of the Nigerian Navy Forward Operation Base at Igbokoda, Navy Captain Usman Yahaya, among others, was seen as the solution to restoring peace in the riverine area.

Some of the surrendered arms include Browning wz machine gun, Daewoo K3, Colt automatic rifles, general purpose machine gun, Breda 30, Fiat Revelli modelling, AK-47 rifles, rocket launcher, CETME Ameli, Heckler & Koch MG4, pump action and some automatic cartridges.

Also, the repentant militants surrendered military uniforms, police bulletproof vests, dynamites, grenades, bombs and helmets.

Iborry Young expressed appreciation to the state and the Federal Government for the fresh Amnesty initiative.

The militant leader traced the source of their arms to the Ijaw/Ilaje crisis of 1998/1999, blaming it on joblessness, poverty and government neglect.

He said: "If we may be asked our reasons for embarking on this struggle, our simple assertion to the public and other concerned authorities is that it is joblessness, suffering, poverty, oppression and neglect by the government."

Iborry said the militants dumped their oil bunkering business and hatched another game plan to attract the attention of the government.

He said: "As it got to this point, we did not find life very easy. Thus, we relocated to Ogun State where the Government College at Igbonla, near Epe school boys were kidnapped. Their release led to the present arrangement through the courageous efforts of the deputy governors of Ondo and Delta states.

"We did not kidnap these boys for mere ransom but to negotiate our freedom and full reintegration into civil life."

Ajayi said the amnesty was impressive as sophisticated ammunitions were surrendered.

The deputy governor assured the repentant militants of Federal Government's readiness to provide job and education programmes, among others, to the repentant militants for them to be self-reliant, if they embrace peace.

He rejoiced with residents of Ajapa community for the restored peace in the community after years of face-off between them and the military.

Also, Navy Captain Yahaya said the exercise in Ajapa community was more impressive because of the record of the exercise since it started.

Five militant groups – the Awaja, Ogoolorunyo (led by Job), Ebie, Dragon and Atupa – had submitted their arms to embrace the Amnesty programme.

Graphic: Man accidentally kills himself while posing with grenade | Mr Olumide's Blog

A Russian man has died after posing for a picture with a hand grenade after taking the pin out.
Alexander 'Sasha' Chechik had sent an image to his friend showing himself holding the grenade moments before it detonated, killing him instantly.

Police say that he had sent several images to friends where he posed with the hand grenade and that this indicates that he had not intended to take his own life.

A graphic police picture shows the appalling carnage.
Moments earlier, one friend had messaged him: 'Where are you? Are you OK?'

He replied: 'Depends on what OK is in your understanding?'

He sent a picture of the grenade in his hand - with the pin removed.
The friend told him: 'Listen, don't do stupid things. Where are you?

According to Daily Mail,'Police said they believe Mr Chechik expected the grenade would not explode as long as he didn't throw it.
As he had also sent pictures to other friends, police have categorised his death as an accident not suicide, according to reports.

Buhari Approved Malami’s Meeting With Me – Maina

Posted: 29 Nov 2017 12:16 AM PST

The embattled former chairman of the defunct Pension Reform Task Team, Abdulrasheed Maina, says he helped President Muhammadu Buhari recover N1.3tn in January.

Maina, who is wanted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, said this in a video.

He claimed that while he was out of the country, the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN), paid him a visit during which he (Maina) told Malami about the N1.3tn.

"When this government came in, the President (Buhari) gave the nod that 'go and sit down with Maina, I've given you the approval.'

"They sat down with me after the security agencies had cleared me. Nobody has ever taken me to court in Nigeria, I want Nigerians to know; I have never been taken to any court of law. I have sued all the security agencies that they are talking about and I have won, I have four court judgments."

Maina said, "As soon as this current government decided to sit with me, after the meeting, I told them that I would not allow them to return to Nigeria without giving them a gift. I told them I will give them something and the Minister of Justice (Malami) laughed and he asked what the gift was.

"I gave him a document and said go here and here; that there is N1.3tn which they want to steal because they have been stealing every year. He was shocked and said it wasn't possible but I told him that sir, with all due respect, could you try what I said?

"The minister thought it wasn't possible but when he got back, he realised that I gave him the correct information."

Maina urged President Muhammadu Buhari to give him some form of immunity which would allow him to appear before the National Assembly without being arrested.

He said if he testified in public, many secrets would be revealed.

Maina said some of the people working for the President were insincere and not telling the truth.

He said, "People around the President portray themselves as saints but it is a lie. My team recovered N282bn in cash; aside that, we were able to bring information that led to the arrest of 43 pension suspects. N1.6tn cash investment and properties were recovered.

"They have threatened my brothers, sisters and even my lawyer. They said I would be killed. They said my family would be annihilated if I testify. I have asked the President specifically that if he wants to know the truth and wants to be fair to the nation, he should give me the opportunity to present (evidence).

"I am appealing to Mr. President. There are so many things that people are not telling you. If I get to that hearing, I will tell you some things that no one has ever told you because I have not had the opportunity to sit down with you and I am telling Mr. President that I will give you information and documents that will help you recover over N3tn now in Nigeria."

Licensing Officers Arrested For Shielding Car Thieves

Posted: 29 Nov 2017 12:16 AM PST

Policemen attached to the Eziama Police Station in Aba, Abia State on Tuesday arrested two vehicle licensing officials, Innocent Ogboonna and Ikechukwu Goodness, while allegedly attempting to register a stolen vehicle.

A statement by the state Commissioner of Police, Anthony Ogbizi, indicated that the vehicle, a Toyota Highlander, with registration number KUT 18 CA, was allegedly snatched from one Obiageli Orizu at Nnewi in Anambra State at gunpoint in 2016.

Ogbizi stated that the car thieves brought the vehicle to Aba and sold it to one Allwell Izunwa of Owaza Asa in the Ukwa West Local Government Area of the state with fake documents.

He disclosed that at the point of effecting change of ownership with the fake documents at a Motor Licensing Office in the Ariaria area of Aba, Ogboonna and Goodness, both workers of the licensing office, discovered that the documents were forged and the vehicle was stolen from its owner.

He said instead of alerting the police, the officials informed the receiver of the stolen car to run away.

The police commissioner said, "It was based on a tip-off that police operatives swung into action recovered the vehicle and arrested the suspects.

"Efforts are in progress to arrest other members of the gang at large."

Kidnappers Claim Relationship With Police, Collect N10m

Posted: 29 Nov 2017 12:11 AM PST

Two cousins, Olugbade Ibikunle and Rafiu Isiaka, who spent 10 days in the kidnappers' den in Akure, Ondo State, have said their relatives paid N10m before their release.
Isiaka, who narrated their ordeals to Punch, said the abductors boasted that they were working with the police.
He explained that the kidnappers were nine Fulani herdsmen, adding that he and his cousin were abducted between two police checkpoints.

The Punch had reported that the duo were travelling to Abuja from Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State, on October 30, 2017 when they were waylaid on Akunu Road, Ondo State, near a police post.

Operatives attached to the post were said to have engaged the kidnappers in a gun duel; but they escaped with their targets.

The kidnappers subsequently contacted the families of the victims and demanded N10m ransom for their release.

The families had begged the kidnappers to take N3m, but they rejected it, insisting on the N10m.

The case was reported at the Ikare Police Division.

Isiaka said none of the gunmen had been arrested by police since their release penultimate Monday.

He said, "We were abducted between two checkpoints. The distance between the checkpoints some metres from each other. The kidnappers were bragging while our relatives were negotiating with them, saying picking us between two police checkpoints was not for free.

"When we begged that there was no way we could get more than N5m, they tortured us. We were tied and beaten up. They said they would take us to a worse place if we didn't pay the N10m.

"So, we had no option but to tell our people to borrow money to secure our release. They said they would settle some policemen from the ransom. They gave us concoctions and didn't allow us to know where we were until we got to the point of our release. We were released at Ogori Magogo in Kogi State, where the ransom was paid.

"Since we returned, we have gone to the Ondo State Police Command to meet with the Commissioner of Police and he had directed the Officer-in-Charge of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit to track the telephone number used by the kidnappers to contact our relatives. We did all that they asked us to do; but till now, we have not heard anything from them. Whenever we called the OC, he would promise to get back to us."

Isiaka said seven of the abductors were fully armed.

"Five were with pump-action rifles; one with a double-barrelled gun, and the seventh person, whom they called Senior, carried a pistol," he added.

The uncle of the victims, Kayode Afolayan, said he reported the claim of the kidnappers to the Ondo State Commissioner of Police, Gbenga Adeyanju, but the CP dismissed it, saying it was false.

He said, "The kidnappers collected N10m from us after 10 days. They told us that some policemen would collect from the ransom and that there was no way they could all share N3m. They said they get leads on their targets from policemen. We reported to the CP, but he said no policeman would share money with kidnappers.

"Two relatives took the money to their hideout in the night and the kidnappers warned that they should not involve security personnel. They confirmed the money was complete before the victims were released. They divided themselves into two; a group collected the ransom, while the other one released them. The police said we should give them some time and promised to track down the suspects."

Folusho Adeyomoye, the younger sister of Ibikunle, the artisan, said he sustained injuries and was admitted to a hospital.

She added that he had travelled abroad.

The state Police PRO, Femi Joseph said he was not aware of any policeman colluding with kidnappers, adding that the command was making efforts to arrest the suspects.
