I prefer to commit suicide than die by hanging-Nigerian death row convict cries out | Mr Olumide's Blog

Posted: 19 Nov 2017 03:37 AM PST

At the condemned convicts section of the Jos Prison, thoughts of committing suicide now fill the mind of 20-year-old Ponjul Yakubu, a farmer who was sentenced to death by hanging for killing his father with a dane gun.

He is currently scared of hearing his name mentioned at all, particularly when a prison warder draws his attention to seek information from him. His heart misses a beat, believing that the hangman has come to execute him on the gallows.

The reality of the cruel act that put him in the present situation dawned on him when Justice A. I Ashoms of the Plateau State High Court found him guilty of murdering his father and sentenced him to death by hanging, on Friday, September 29, this year.

These days, he is always tense, as life has become meaningless to him. From every indication, he is now a walking corpse in the prison where he has remained sober, traumatized and in agony, the Sunday Sun reports.

On the day that this reporter visited the prison to meet with him, his countenance changed when the warder informed him that he had a visitor. He thought it was a smokescreen to take him out for the dreaded appointment with the hangman. Relief came his way when he realized that it was a lawyer who wanted to talk with him in respect of the case decided by the court.

Prior to committing the crime, Ponjul who hails from Langtang South, was resident in Dorowa Vwang-Vwang in Shendam Local Government Area of Plateau State. After writing the Senior Secondary School Examination in 2014, he joined his father, late Domsing Yakubu, in his farming activities.

He was determined to inherit the farmland of his 54-year-old father, having abandoned school to work with him on the farm while two of his younger siblings, Nandet and Blessing pursued further education.

Trouble started when the energetic young man started selling some of the farm produce. He requested his father to buy him a motorcycle to use for commercial purposes to help his mother.

The father allegedly promised to buy the motorcycle from the proceeds of the huge yam harvest and sales of several bags of maize and millet.

Ponjul, Sunday Sun learnt got angry with his father, because he sold the farm produce without consulting him, given that he, Ponjul, did the major part of the work in the farm. He felt that his father deliberately refused to buy the motorcycle as promised. From then on, he was very agitated by the seeming failure of his father to keep the promise. An altercation happened between father and son.

On May 5, 2015, Ponjul returned home about 4:34am and met his father and mother, Tabitha Nanwora Yakubu, lying down on a mat under a tree due to the hot weather in the village.

They were in deep sleep when Ponjul conceived the evil thought to kill the father. He left his room, went into the father's room. He took the father's dane gun and shot him dead on the head.

The mother, the second among four wives of the father who laid beside the husband became terrified as she escaped death by the whiskers. She screamed in horror. Her loud shout, coupled with the sound of the dane gun attracted people that rushed into the compound.

His uncle, Nanshep Bisa, quickly reported the matter to Police Division in Shendam. Ponjul was arrested and arraigned in court on July 8, 2015, to face a one-count charge of culpable homicide punishable with death.

Expectedly, since the judge passed the death sentence on him, Ponjul has been filled with regret as the hangman's noose dangles over his head. He has been praying daily, asking God to forgive him and accept his soul if he is eventually executed.

These days, Ponjul cries endlessly in the prison, worried about his mother, who abandoned him to his fate all through the trial. No member of the family showed up in court except his uncle who testified against him.

"I had no intention of killing my father, I only wanted to threaten and frighten him, so that he would buy me the motorcycle. I didn't know when I cocked the gun and shot him dead. I have regretted my action, but there was nothing I could do after I committed the crime. I begged my uncle to quash the matter at home on a ground that I will not try this again but he refused. He wanted me to learn a lesson and now I have been sentenced to death.
"I prefer to die by committing suicide than to pass through the horrible experience of death by hanging. If I knew that my action would put me in this present condition, I would have killed myself instead of my father," Ponjul said, tear drops rolling down his cheeks.

10 Beautiful Descriptions of Heaven from the Bible

Posted: 19 Nov 2017 01:55 AM PST

I've been fortunate to have witnessed some of the most breathtaking views on earth. From the Rocky Mountains outside my back window to the jungles of Belize, God's creation is marvelous. But there is a future place – an eternal dwelling – that far exceeds anything we could ever behold.

Heaven is not a mythical place. It is the holy dwelling of the Lord Most High. And although we cannot even begin to comprehend its splendor, the Bible gives us beautiful descriptions of the place in which those who have received Jesus will spend eternity.

Here are 10 beautiful descriptions of heaven from the Bible:

1. John 14:2-3
"In My Father's house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also" (John 14:2-3).

From my back window, I can see impressive-looking homes dotting the landscape of the foothills. Considered mansions by the world's standards, I know they don't even come close to the mansions prepared for the saints in heaven.

Before His death, Jesus comforted his disciples with the promise that he would go and provide a place for them. The most beautiful part was His assurance that He would return for them and receive them unto Himself.

No matter how spectacular the mansions in our Father's house, dwelling with Jesus will be the most beautiful habitation of all. Welcomed into heaven by the Way, the Truth, and the Life, will be the culmination of the hope we have in Christ.

2. Hebrews 12:22-23
But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, to an innumerable company of angels, to the general assembly and church of the firstborn who are registered in heaven, to God the Judge of all, to the spirits of just men made perfect (Hebrews 12:22-23).

This Bible passage is rich with beautiful and detailed descriptions of heaven. The "city of the living God," will be a spectacular place according to God's perfect design. And, as one writer put it, the heavenly Jerusalem will be "a place of unimagined blessing."

Those registered in heaven, having been made perfect by Jesus' sacrifice on the cross, will assemble with an innumerable company of angels before their most holy God. To try and picture the multitudes spread out before the Living God is amazing, and altogether incomprehensible.

Mount Zion, the city of David and the eternal possession of God Most High, will be the holy city where all will assemble to worship Him.

"At that time Jerusalem shall be called The Throne of the Lord, and all the nations shall be gathered to it, to the name of the Lord, to Jerusalem. No more shall they follow the dictates of their evil hearts" (Jeremiah 3:17).

3. Revelation 7:9-10
"After these things I looked, and behold, a great multitude which no one could number, of all nations, tribes, peoples, and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, with palm branches in their hands, and crying out with a loud voice, saying, 'Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!'" (Revelation 7:9-10)

The triumphal entry, mentioned in the Gospels, portrayed Jesus riding on a donkey into the city of Jerusalem. The Jews had lined the streets with their cloaks, waving palm branches and praising God for the miracles they had seen Jesus perform (Luke 19:37).

"…when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet Him, and cried out: 'Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord! The King of Israel!'" (John 12:12)

However, as Jesus saw them, He wept, For He knew they did not truly understand who He was.

"And when he drew near and saw the city, he wept over it, saying, "Would that you, even you, had known on this day the things that make for peace!" (Luke 19:41-42)

In heaven, there will be no confusion about the Prince of Peace. Every saint, from every tribe and tongue will be clothed in robes of white, waving palm branches of genuine praise.

"Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!"

4. Revelation 7:15-17
"Therefore they are before the throne of God, and serve Him day and night in His temple. And He who sits on the throne will dwell among them. They shall neither hunger anymore nor thirst anymore; the sun shall not strike them, nor any heat; for the Lamb who is in the midst of the throne will shepherd them and lead them to living fountains of waters. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes" (Revelation 7:15-17).

Those who have come out of the great tribulation will remain before the throne of God forever.

With pure joy and adoration, they will serve Him night and day. Jesus, the Good Shepherd, will lead them to fountains of living waters, never to thirst again. Every tear will be wiped away by the merciful hand of God and they will rest in the shade of His presence.

I imagine the saints will have just as much joy, after ten thousand years of serving God, as they had on the first day. Just like the old hymn says…

"When we've been there ten thousand years, bright shining as the sun, we've no less days to sing God's praise than when we'd first begun."

5. Revelation 11:19
"Then the temple of God was opened in heaven, and the ark of His covenant was seen in His temple. And there were lightnings, noises, thunderings, an earthquake, and great hail" (Revelation 11:19).

There is something absolutely majestic about watching a storm from afar. The intensity of lightning and deep rumbling of thunder reminds us of God's matchless power and sovereignty over all of creation. Beyond our human understanding, the thunderings of heaven will be unlike the most powerful storm we've ever experienced. God's majesty will be proclaimed throughout the entire universe. His voice will thunder throughout the heavens.

"The voice of the Lord is over the waters; the God of glory thunders; the Lord is over many waters. The voice of the Lord is powerful; the voice of the Lord is full of majesty" (Psalm 29:3-4).

At last, the temple of the Lord will be opened and the ark of the covenant will be seen again. For His covenant is everlasting and His kingdom will have no end.

"…and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end" (Luke 1:33).

6. Revelation 19:11-14
"Now I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse. And He who sat on him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and makes war. His eyes were like a flame of fire, and on His head were many crowns. He had a name written that no one knew except Himself. He was clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God. And the armies in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, followed Him on white horses" (Revelation 19:11-14).

Rider on a white horse, Faithful and True … the Lord Jesus will ride from heaven with His armies dressed in white. The King of Kings, wearing many crowns, will ultimately come to judge the nations. With eyes like flames of fire, His righteousness will penetrate every single heart.

There will be no mistake about who Jesus is or what He has done. His robe, dipped in blood, will be a testament to His perfect sacrifice on the cross. And every knee will bow, every tongue will confess, that Jesus Christ is Lord.

"Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father" (Philippians 2:9-11).

7. Revelation 21:9-11
"Come, I will show you the bride, the Lamb's wife.' And he carried me away in the Spirit to a great and high mountain, and showed me the great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God, having the glory of God. Her light was like a most precious stone, like a jasper stone, clear as crystal" (Revelation 21:9-11).

An incredibly rare gemstone called taaffeite was discovered in Sri Lanka in 1945. Since then, only a handful of these gems have been found. This rarely seen beauty makes them highly sought after and valuable.

In heaven, the light of the great city of Jerusalem will be like a glorious stone, shining pure like crystal. Its radiance will outshine any precious gem on earth and its value will be immeasurable. Covered in the glory of God, the holy Jerusalem will descend with brilliance.

"Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, God will shine forth" (Psalm 50:2).

Every treasure man holds valuable will pale in comparison to the magnificent city of heaven. Precious stones will lavishly adorn the walls of Jerusalem.

"The foundations of the wall of the city were adorned with all kinds of precious stones: the first foundation was jasper, the second sapphire, the third chalcedony, the fourth emerald, the fifth sardonyx, the sixth sardius, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth chrysoprase, the eleventh jacinth, and the twelfth amethyst" (Revelation 21:19-20).

8. Revelation 21:21
"The twelve gates were twelve pearls: each individual gate was of one pearl. And the street of the city was pure gold, like transparent glass" (Revelation 21:21).

I recently read a historical account in my son's History book that described what the early colonists discovered on the shores of Chesapeake Bay. Giant oysters, so numerous they covered the ground like stones, were waiting in abundance for the weary travelers. Many of them contained pearls – much to the colonist's delight.

To visualize the pearly gates of heaven, being formed out of ONE pearl, is unfathomable. Streets of gold, so pure that they are transparent, will extend from the twelve gates. What a beautiful description!

Revelation 21 goes on to say that in heaven there will be no more sun or moon. The glory of God and the light of the Lamb will be its illumination.

"The city had no need of the sun or of the moon to shine in it, for the glory of God illuminated it. The Lamb is its light. And the nations of those who are saved shall walk in its light, and the kings of the earth bring their glory and honor into it. Its gates shall not be shut at all by day (there shall be no night there)" (Revelation 21:23-25).

9. Revelation 22:2
"In the middle of its street, and on either side of the river, was the tree of life, which bore twelve fruits, each tree yielding its fruit every month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations" (Revelation 22:2).

In a world that is riddled with sickness and disease, the description of the tree of life in Revelation 22 is a beautiful reminder that there will be no more suffering or pain in heaven.

The fruit of the tree, which will line the center of heaven's golden street, will be continuously available in abundance. There will be no more searching for the cures of diseases known to man. Every ailment will be remedied by the leaves of the tree, and the nations will be healed once and for all.

"He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes I will give to eat from the tree of life, which is in the midst of the Paradise of God"' (Revelation 2:7).

10. Revelation 22:4-5
"They shall see His face, and His name shall be on their foreheads. There shall be no night there: They need no lamp nor light of the sun, for the Lord God gives them light. And they shall reign forever and ever" (Revelation 22:4-5).

The widely popular song, "I Can Only Imagine", by Mercy Me, beautifully describes one man's awe, as he finds himself side by side with Jesus. Surrounded by the magnificent glory of God, shining brighter than the sun, these lyrics inspire us to try to imagine the beauty of finally meeting Jesus face-to-face.

I don't know about you, but I am ready to meet the Savior! To receive His name on my forehead, as a stamp of approval and acceptance, is unimaginable!

Forever and ever, we will rule and reign as joint heirs with Christ. Every beautiful description of heaven will come to fruition and far exceed our greatest expectations.

He who testifies to these things says, "Surely I am coming quickly." Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus! (Revelation 22:20)

Goodluck Jonathan: "I didn’t receive any money from Maina"

Posted: 19 Nov 2017 01:30 AM PST

Nigeria's immediate past president, Goodluck Jonathan, has said he did not receive any money from the controversial pension fund.

He said there was no iota of truth in reports that he was paid N5billion monthly from the money.

His media adviser, Mr. Ikechukwu Eze, gave the explanation in Abuja on Saturday while reacting to a statement credited to the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), published in a national newspaper last week.

The chief legal officer of the federation was said to have told a Senate ad-hoc committee that an "ex-president was taking N5bn monthly from the Pension Fund."

Eze dismissed the claim as "a blatant lie hurriedly cooked up to divert the attention of the general public from the raging 'Mainagate' and other embarrassing scandals."

He added, "We believe that the story was concocted as part of the unfolding grand design (by the Buhari administration) to always dodge responsibility and blame every evil act taking place in the present dispensation on the past (Jonathan) administration.

"In the first place, we do not believe that Malami made such a claim because he is in a position to know that it is simply not true."

"Return N520m You Took From Dasuki Or Face Trial – EFCC tells Pius Anyim

Posted: 19 Nov 2017 12:30 AM PST

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has given a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Pius Anyim, the option of returning the N520m he allegedly collected from a former National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd.), or be prosecuted for money laundering.

It was learnt that Anyim, who is a former Senate President, was still in EFCC custody on Saturday and might remain there until investigations reach a logical conclusion.

A source at the EFCC said, "Anyim collected N520m from Dasuki on the eve of the presidential election in March, 2015. We have asked him to return the money. That is our primary goal. Let him tell us how he intends to pay back."

The source told Punch that the commission was not in a hurry to release Anyim on self-recognizance as he was known to shun invitations.

He added, "Anyim had, in the past, shunned invitations by the National Assembly and even the EFCC. He is not the type to be granted unconditional bail."

Meanwhile, it was learnt that EFCC had invited companies that received contracts during his tenure.

Anyim was also accused of awarding contracts to some companies linked to him through which ecological funds were allegedly diverted.

The companies include Foundation Years Limited, Precious Integrated, Precious Petroleum, Mak & Mak, Chap Construction, Eldyke Engineering, Pryke Limited, Chipa Nigeria Limited, Prima A11 Limited, Pima International, Chanto Engineering, Ishiagu Microfinance Bank, Mulak Ventures, Vitro Engineering and Tip Top Nigeria.

The source added, "Anyim was SGF from May 2011 to May 29, 2015. During this period, specifically May 2012 to May 2015, the SGF Ecological Fund Account with the Central Bank of Nigeria received an inflow of N58,146,983,677.85.

"From this fund, three of the companies linked to Anyim – Foundation Years, Obis Associate and Eldyke Engineering – received contracts worth over N13bn. Foundation Years alone received a net payment of N10,308,017,838.85 between 2014 and 2015.

"Curiously, on receiving the fund, Foundation Years and another Anyim company, Br-Kthru made several transfers to 37 entities. Some of the organisations and individuals have no nexus at all with ecological issues. Investigators are probing the reasons behind the wild disbursement."

FG yet to reach out to Ikoyi whistle-blower | Mr Olumide's Blog

Posted: 18 Nov 2017 11:32 PM PST

One week after the Federal Government promised to reward the person who provided the information leading to the discovery of $43.5 million, £27,800 and N23.2 million stashed at No. 16 Osborne Road, Ikoyi, Lagos, information available to Sunday Vanguard suggests that the government is yet to reach out to the whistle-blower.

Sunday Vanguard further discovered that another individual, Mr. Abdulmumuni Musa, who claimed to have revealed the existence of the money to the EFCC, has already written to the Ministry of Finance, pleading that the payment of the reward be withheld until his name is included as a whistle-blower.

He also contradicted claims that the principal whistle-blower, Mr. Stephen Sunday, has a mental problem, adding that he only knew him as a lover of alcohol.

However, Mr. Yakubu Galadima, the lawyer to the prime whistle-blower, who told Sunday Vanguard that the federal government was yet to get across to his client, said:
"They have my numbers but I have not heard anything from them. I don't want to preempt them. I am waiting for the end of the month when they promised to pay. People have called me and even sent sms that I should add the name of the person who did not provide primary information. He does not even work at the apartment where the money was found. He is just an estate agent in Ikoyi.  He suggested that they should burgle the place. There is a form that the EFCC gives to people who provide information, ask him if he was given any form to complete."
On his part, Abdulmumuni, who wants his name included, to enable him benefit from the reward, told Sunday Vanguard that
"this thing started in 2016. I am an estate agent. Sunday is my friend. He informed me that there is money in the apartment where he was working. He said there was a woman who often came to the apartment with an old taxi. Sunday said there was a day he helped the woman to take some luggage to the apartment, adding that it was on that way that he discovered the money. There was even a cleaner who was aware of that but I will not mention his name.
He knew the exact time that the woman was always comming to the fiat. "Sunday, who worked there as a security man, said his intention was to burgle the place but I discouraged him. I was the one, who introduced Bala and asked if he knew someone at the EFCC. He said he knew an EFCC informant (names withheld). They said their boss was not around and asked us to come the next way. When we repeated the visit, the 2-i-C interrogated me and told me the implication if the information is not real. I said that I spent months working on it. The man listened to me mostly because he discovered that Bala and Sunday were novice.
They said they would call any of us when they have gotten warrant from their boss. They said that when they call one person, he should call others. But the EFCC called Sunday  without my knowledge on the day of the operation. I read about it in the papers and called Sunday who denied that EFCC called him. They  even gave him N500,000 on that day which he lavished in a hotel. "I didn't know him as a mad person. I was surprised when I learnt that he was taken to a psychiatric hospital. I know that he loves alcohol so much. I wrote the Ministry of Finance because it is my right. I was the one who ensured that the place was not burgled. The EFCC knows that."

When Sunday Vanguard called the spokesperson to the EFCC, Me Wilson Uwajuren, to verify some claims made by Mumuni, he did not pick his calls.

Kim Kardashian reveals her surrogate didn't know whose baby she was carrying | Mr Olumide's Blog

Kim Kardashian made a surprising revelation about her surrogate: she didn't know initially that she was carrying Kim and Kanye West's baby .

"She didn't know at the beginning," the 37-year-old Keeping Up With The Kardashians star said during an interview on The Real
"She didn't know. You could do it totally anonymously. You could go that route. And I just felt like, whoever is carrying my baby, what if they weren't a fan of me or my husband? What if they didn't want to be carrying our baby? I wanted to give them that choice, and be proud and on the same page. I wanted a relationship with her."

She also spoke about what happened when her surrogate found out:
"She was really excited. She was someone who had watched the show - not like a super fan, that it would have been uncomfortable - but she'd seen my struggle and seen how open I was about it, so she was really proud to do it.

Photo :Three Pastors Charged With Sex Trafficking of Children | Mr Olumide's Blog

Posted: 18 Nov 2017 11:32 PM PST

Three pastors accused of exploiting and abusing teenage girls were indicted this week on federal child sex trafficking charges in Toledo, Ohio.

The men, Kenneth Butler, 37; Anthony J. Haynes, 38; and Cordell Jenkins, 47, were charged with conspiracy for child sex trafficking as part of an 11-count indictment handed down on Tuesday, the United States Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Ohio said. The three men pleaded not guilty.

According to NYTimes, they are accused of sexually assaulting a girl beginning in 2014, when she was 14, through 2017. Some of the abuse is thought to have taken place at hotels and at Greater Life Christian Center in Toledo, where Mr. Haynes was a pastor and used his telephone to record the sexual assaults, prosecutors said.

Mr. Haynes gave the girl money and told her not to tell anyone, saying it would ruin his family and his church, according to court documents. He "facilitated" the victim being abused by several other men, including Mr. Jenkins, who repeatedly sexually exploited the girl at his home, in his office at Abundant Life Ministries, and at a motel in Toledo, prosecutors said.

Mr. Jenkins recorded the abuse with his cellphone and paid the girl with what he called "hush money," court documents said. He also allegedly abused a second girl in March of this year.

Mr. Butler, who was a pastor at Kingdom Encounter Family Worship Center in Detroit, about an hour from Toledo, was also indicted on sex trafficking charges involving a third girl who was abused between 2015 and March 2017, the court documents said.

"All three have religious affiliations and knew each other in that capacity," said Michael Tobin, a spokesman for the United States attorney's office. "All three claim to be ministers in one form or another."
The three men will remain in custody until their next hearing, scheduled for January.

Posted: 18 Nov 2017 10:25 PM PST

A popular traditional food in Nigeria is Swallow. It is so described because rather than chewing it, you have to swallow. So, Swallow is a Nigerian food eaten with different kinds of soup. To truly enjoy swallow, you should use your hands to eat it.

Jumia Food highlight 7 popular swallows eaten by Nigerians.

Eba
Garri which is used to make Eba is made from grated cassava. Eba is rich in carbohydrates and it comes in two colours-yellow and white. While the yellow one is popular among the Igbos, the white one is eaten by everyone even though it is indigenous to the Yorubas. It can be eaten with any soup of your choice.

Amala
Àmàlà is a made out of yam or cassava flour. Yams are peeled, sliced, cleaned, dried and then blended into a flour, also called elubo. This elubo is used to make Amala. It healthy because it contains fewer carbohydrates and more proteins.

Pounded yam
Pounded yam also know as Iyan is made by boiling several yams and pounding it. This has discouraged many Nigerians from preparing the cuisine. Luckily, there is now a machine for pounding yam.

Akpu (fufu)
Fufu is very rich in carbohydrate. It has very low cholesterol content and it is made from cassava.

Tuwo Shinkafa

Wheat
As the name implies, Wheat is made from whole grain wheat. It is proteinous and rich in fibres.

Semolina
If you do not want to prepare Eba, then the best alternative is Semolina. Semolina is produced by milling semolina grains into powder and this powder or flour is used to prepare the Semolina fufu which is eaten with the various Nigerian soup recipes.

"Only Buhari Can Give Igbo Presidency" – Arthur Eze

Posted: 18 Nov 2017 09:50 PM PST

Businessman and chieftain of the ruling APC, Chief Arthur Eze, has called for support from the people of the south-east for the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, stressing that it is only through Buhari that the quest for Igbo presidency can actualized.

Eze, who is the founder and chairman of oil exploration company, Atlas Oranto Petroleum, said this in Abakaliki during Buhari's visit to the state.

According to him, if not for late General Sani Abacha, Ebonyi State would not have been created, adding that Abacha was a good man to have considered the creation of a state called Ebonyi.

He commended governor David Umahi for the rapid transformation of the state, recalling that the level of development in the state was unprecedented after 17 years of his last visit to the state.

"I am very happy to be here. I came here last in the year 2000, about 17 years ago but the place has changed. From Enugu everywhere has changed. There is cleanliness and orderliness everywhere.

"We are happy with the governor that he is doing what we sent him to do. There was a time people were voting against the creation of Ebonyi State. Some governors of Eastern Nigeria were opposing it. General Sani Abacha is a good man, he said let us give you a state. And after giving you people the state, your life changed.

"We should be grateful to the northern people. It is only the northerners that can do that. The same northerner, President Muhammadu Buhari after eight years, will give the Igbo people president. Nobody else will do that, it is only Buhari that can do that. It is only Buhari that can transmit the presidency to the Igbo man because he takes decision without minding who you are.

"Somebody like your governor, David Nweze Umahi, is a man who fears God and thinks after the poor. Support him to rule Igbo people and our lives will be better", he stated.

We Must Deal Lethal Blow to Criminal Networks, Crush Terror – VP Osinbajo

Posted: 18 Nov 2017 08:55 PM PST

*"It is clear that without dealing a lethal blow to those powerful criminal networks that funnel money to terrorist groups, we cannot reasonably hope to completely obliterate the threat of terrorism and other organized criminal activity in our sub-region."
African economies must treat money laundering and other financial crimes with zero tolerance to maintain and sustain economic, financial and political stability, according to VP Yemi Osinbajo.

Prof. Osinbajo stated this at the opening ceremony of the Inter-Governmental Action Group against Money Laundering in West Africa (GIABA) 18th Ministerial Committee meeting, which held at the Sheraton Hotels and Towers, Abuja, Nigeria, on Saturday.

"We have for long enough affirmed our commitment as a sub-region to fighting Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing. We must now back this intent with forceful action and visible results," the Vice President said.

Below is the full text of his speech at the event.

SPEECH BY VICE PRESIDENT YEMI OSINBAJO, SAN, AT THE OPENING CEREMONY OF THE GIABA 18TH MINISTERIAL COMMITTEE MEETING, HELD AT THE SHERATON HOTELS AND TOWERS, ABUJA, NIGERIA, ON NOVEMBER 18, 2017:

Protocols
It is my privilege and pleasure to welcome you all to Nigeria as you attend the 18th GIABA Ministerial Committee meeting today.

Let me start by commending the Inter-Governmental Action Group against Money Laundering in West Africa (GIABA) for the support to member States in implementing robust Anti-Money laundering and terrorist financing measures in line with acceptable international standards, particularly the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) recommendations.

GIABA has worked hard in keeping with the ECOWAS mandate to eradicate Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing from our region by regularly assessing and evaluating member states on their implementation of the FATF standard recommendations.

Since the beginning of this week, all member states of the GIABA (the 15 ECOWAS countries, and Sao Tome & Principe) have gathered here in Abuja under the auspices of GIABA to evaluate their respective AML/CFT regimes and share experiences on the way forward in tackling these financial crimes.

Let me also commend the dedication of the GIABA Ministerial Committee, which stands at the helm of GIABA, serving as the conduit of political will and funding from the member-states, as well as providing it with policy directions required to conduct its activities.

Your Excellencies, Honourable Ministers, Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing are crimes that have significant ramifications for the security and wellbeing of our various countries.

In Boko Haram we have seen the devastation that a well-resourced terrorist group can wreak, not just on individual lives and livelihoods, but also on the stability of national and regional political and economic systems.

In the last decade, more than 20,000 lives have been lost to terrorism propagated by Boko Haram, and more than 2 million persons displaced. One important question that arises is this: How did a once-obscure sect, domiciled primarily in a single city in Northern Nigeria, evolve to become, at one point, a menace, not only to the country but to the entire Lake Chad Basin?

I'm certain that a significant part of the answer to those questions will be found in the complicated multinational networks of financing that sustained the group and nurtured its hateful vision. There is absolutely no way that Boko Haram would have grown as dangerous as it did without access to funding and resources, mobilized from far and wide.

It is clear that without dealing a lethal blow to those powerful criminal networks that funnel money to terrorist groups, we cannot reasonably hope to completely obliterate the threat of terrorism and other organized criminal activity in our sub-region.

Boko Haram is just one example of how much evil can be done by a subversive group that has figured out how to raise money in the shadows. There are many others like it, with similar or different goals, all of them united by the need to raise financing to achieve their aims. We know that the lines between terrorist groups, corrupt politicians, traffickers (whether of drugs, guns or people); fraudsters; smugglers; kidnappers; illegal oil bunkerers, etc, have always been blurry; that these groups have always found complementary need for one another's tactics and strategies. Indeed, if there's one thing that the world's deadliest terrorist groups, from Al Qaeda to ISIS to Al-Shabaab, have in common, it is the ease and expertise with which they diversify their criminal activity while retaining their overarching goal of inflicting maximum devastation.

Today, in the age of the Internet, that blurring has intensified. Cyberspace has made it easier than ever for criminal syndicates to not only draw inspiration and learning from one another, but to also devise increasingly complex means of fundraising and of bypassing conventional financial system checkpoints and safeguards. The advent of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies provides the unprecedented levels of discreetness preferred by criminal networks. The result is that financial crime is able to always stay a few steps ahead of governments and the law.

As for official corruption, all around us we see its devastating effects – in the rundown schools and hospitals; potholed roads; under-equipped armies; subverted financial systems, and fragile democracies. At risk from money laundering especially the laundering of proceeds of corruption, and terrorist financing are the stability of our financial and political systems, and ultimately the development of our countries and the prosperity of our people. What this means is that we are dealing here with an existential threat – it's either we wipe it out or it wipes us out.

This should spur us to treat money laundering and other financial crimes with zero tolerance. We have for long enough affirmed our commitment as a sub-region to fighting Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing. We must now back this intent with forceful action and visible results.

While we acknowledge the steps we have taken, individually and collectively, in recent years – implementing recommendations, strengthening institutions, building partnerships and collaborations – we cannot afford complacency at this time. This is actually the reason why we need to redouble our efforts, to shore up the political will required to apply and implement the laws and frameworks we have worked hard to develop.

Information sharing is very important to the success of our fight. This means that on the one hand we should rise above the temptations of secretiveness and mutual suspicion; and on the other hand we must do everything in our power to sustain trust and confidence by safeguarding every piece of information that is being shared across national databases.

We must also strive to work beyond the barriers imposed by the differences in our various legal systems, bearing in our minds that the criminals we are tackling have never allowed themselves to be held back by these obstacles. I trust that these issues and more will be exhaustively covered in your deliberations at this meeting.

Permit me to raise a matter of considerable importance to many of our nations. It is the difficulty we experience in repatriating proceeds of corruption from financial institutions of the more developed nations. Despite numerous mutual legal assistance treaties and Conventions, it is obvious that we are not making the sort of progress we expect to see. It is unconscionable, in our view, to have stolen funds in a bank within the jurisdiction of an FATF country and to have to go through a rigorous obstacle course to retrieve the funds and even when such funds are to be returned after several years, humiliating conditions are attached.

It is the view of Nigeria that FATF countries must, as a matter of respect for the spirit of our collaboration, and with the same efficiency and zero tolerance for quibbling, ensure the smooth repatriation of proceeds of corruption to the economies from where they were stolen. The other issue is the risk of the dangers posed by anonymous corporate ownership. If nothing else, the Panama Papers and now the Paradise papers clearly illustrate the global scale and spread of this problem. So this is a global challenge and nothing less than a truly global approach will be needed to tackle it.

We must commend the United Kingdom, Norway, Netherlands and Denmark for leading the way in establishing public registers of the real, human owners of companies in their countries. We call on other G8 and G20 countries not only to follow suit but also to initiate actions to end corporate secrecy in some of their dependencies. We cannot have anonymous ownership of companies, trusts and other arrangements designed to cover ownership of assets, and at the same time expect optimal results from anti-money laundering measures.

Once again, I thank GIABA and the GIABA Ministerial Committee for choosing to host this meeting in Abuja, Nigeria. I wish you fruitful deliberations as you go into your closed session.

Thank you.

E! investigating Ryan Seacrest after former stylist accuses him of msconduct | Mr Olumide's Blog

Posted: 18 Nov 2017 01:17 PM PST

E! is conducting an internal investigation into an allegation of misconduct against Ryan Seacrest.

The allegation stems from a former stylist who worked at E! News when Seacrest worked there. The incident, the details of which are unknown, is alleged to have occurred roughly a decade ago. Seacrest said in a statement Friday.

Recently, someone that worked as a wardrobe stylist for me nearly a decade ago at E! News, came forward with a complaint suggesting I behaved inappropriately toward her," "If I made her feel anything but respected, I am truly sorry. I dispute these reckless allegations and I plan to cooperate with any corporate inquiries that may result. I treat all my colleagues with kindness, dignity, and understanding, as this is a principle that's core to who I am. Throughout my 25 years in the entertainment industry, the majority of my co-workers have been women, and I've endeavored to foster a positive work environment of mutual respect and courtesy, as that's how I believe it should be. I'm distraught that anyone or any situation would call that into question. I'm proud of my workplace reputation, and believe my track record will speak for itself. I'm an advocate for women. I will continue to support their voices."

A spokesperson for E! confirmed that the cable channel is conducting an investigation.
