Kidnapper Evans' "Missing" N50m: Nigeria Police Reacts

Posted: 16 Oct 2017 03:54 AM PDT

The Police has reacted to claims by lawyer to kidnapper, Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike aka Evans, Mr. Olukoya Ogungbeje, that officers of Inspector General of Police's Intelligence Response Team have extorted money and valuables worth over N50m from his client since his arrest.

Mr. Ogungbeje in a petition filed at Police Service Commission, also accused the officers of molesting one Amaka Offor who is Evans's girlfriend.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Jimoh Moshood, in a statement, said the allegations are baseless and untrue. Read the statement below:

The attention of the Nigeria Police Force has been drawn to publications in the media on 14October, 2017 that " Evans' lawyer accuses police of extorting over N50 million, other valuables" from his client and another report that "Police Sexually molesting Evan's Girlfriend, Amaka Offor" credited to one Olukoya Ogungbeje .

The two publications were found out to be absolute falsehood, misleading, unfounded and deliberate attempt to cast aspersion on the thorough and discrete investigation carried out by the Nigeria Police Force in all the offences committed by Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike (popularly known as Evans) who has pleaded guilty in court to multiple kidnappings, murder, armed robbery and other capital offences.

Virtually all the items erroneously claimed by Olukoya Ogungbeje to have been forcefully and corruptibly extorted from his client were found out to have been exaggerated. For avoidance of doubt, all monetary exhibits and other valuable properties including houses and exotic vehicles were not extorted but recovered by the IGP Intelligence Response Team during the investigation into the several cases of kidnappings, murder, armed robbery and other capital offences linked to Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike (known as Evans) were duly registered and will be tendered in court as exhibits as the trial progresses.

It is pertinent to disabuse the minds of the public who must have read the story that no police personnel within the team or anywhere else involved in the investigation of all the cases linked to Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike (popularly known as Evans) engage in any sexually molestation of the alleged Evan's girlfriend Amaka Offor as claimed. This allegation is entirely untrue and incorrect.

The Nigeria Police sees the publications as a deliberate distraction and ill motives by the billionaire kidnapper's lawyer to pervert the end of justice. He is advised to face his client's case in court and not misleading the public.

They hereby enjoined the public to disregard and discountenance the unfounded publications.

Cairo emerges riskiest megacity for women | Mr Olumide's Blog

Posted: 16 Oct 2017 03:51 AM PDT

Cairo was named on Monday as the most dangerous megacity for women by an international Media poll.

Women's rights experts said that the treatment of women in the Egyptian capital has worsened since a 2011 uprising seeking social change.

Cairo came out worst when the Media asked experts on women's issues in 19 megacities how well women are protected from sexual violence, harmful cultural practices and about access to healthcare and finance.

Women's rights campaigners and commentators said women in Cairo faced daily harassment while a weakened economy and high unemployment since the uprising had eroded economic opportunities for women and seen health services deteriorate.

"The economy has become so bad in the last two, three years that we are suffering a setback in the thinking that women's issues are not a priority," said Omaima Abou-Bakr, co-founder of Women and Memory Forum, a non-government organisation set up to fight misconceptions of Arab women.

Jacob Zuma, after receiving Award in Nigeria: 'Nobody Should Kill Nigerian In South Africa'

Posted: 16 Oct 2017 03:29 AM PDT

The President of South Africa, Jacob Zuma, has warned that no Nigerian citizen should be killed in any parts of South Africa again.

Zuma made the statement in a release issued in Owerri, by the Chief Press Secretary, to Gov. Okorocha, Mr. Sam Onwuemeodo, after receiving the Imo merit award and signing of Memoranda of understanding between Zuma foundation and Rochas foundation of Africa.

Also in the release, Zuma said that no South Africa citizen should be killed.

Just as the president, called for stronger partnership between Nigeria and South. According to the release, "President of South Africa, Mr. Jacob Zuma has said that a South African must not kill a Nigerian and a Nigerian must not kill a South African, adding that the relationship between Nigeria and South Africa should be stronger than any other part, for the sake of the Continent of Africa.

"Africans must come together to address African problems. We are the same people. We cannot succeed if we handle problems as individuals. We need to recognize that we are one.

"I am an ordinary freedom fighter belonging to the African National Congress (ANC). But in 1994, I felt, I have been part of those who have made oppressed people of South Africa to accomplish an important mission of liberating themselves.

"But political freedom without economic freedom is not enough freedom.  That is why in our era, we have a government that will begin to make economic laws, because if the economic power is not there, there is very little you can do for the poor and the oppressed.

"Then I have also realized that the time comes for nations to speak the truth, and I'm among those who are speaking the truth now, because the more things they said about me, that are not true, the more stubborn I become in my agitation.

"Don't be dismayed. For these reasons, I stand here being seen as a Hero by the leadership of Imo State in Nigeria and to make me feel empowered that what I say, think and believe in, is correct."

Ladies; Know Your Bre*sts, Save Your Life! lady shares story of her family

Posted: 16 Oct 2017 02:59 AM PDT

The date was 27th January 2014. I got up early from my hospital bed, showered, ready for risk-reducing bilateral mastectomy with immediate reconstruction. I was 37 years old at the time, so you can imagine that this was not a decision that I would have made lightly.

My name is Bamidele Adenipekun. I am an author, coach and speaker. I am a 40-year old, single mother of a fabulous daughter. I live in Swansea, South Wales.

Trauma has had a major impact on my family – life as we knew it was changed by bre*st cancer and loss. I have discovered though, that in the aftermath of adverse life circumstances, thriving and fulfilment is possible.

I am the second of five siblings – I have three sisters and a brother. My older sister passed away this year after a 5-year battle with metastatic breast cancer at the age of 46. This was also the same age that our mum passed away 23 years earlier with the same diagnosis. My mum was diagnosed in 1990 in Nigeria at a time when bre*st awareness was not even a consideration within the health sector.

Bre*st cancer was viewed with suspicion, dread and an element of shame which didn't really make sense to me as a teenager, who became a caregiver to my mother in the last year of her life. This was in addition to taking on the role of managing a household from the age of 14. Dealing with bre*st cancer in any context is traumatic enough; domestic violence and abuse that was par for course in our home courtesy of my father made for a very bleak existence.

With respect to cancer of any kind, early diagnosis equals better prognosis. Bre*st cancer is no exception. With respect to my mum, by the time the cancer was discovered, it had already spread into her lymph nodes. What then followed was firefighting compounded by some grievous errors in the treatment cycle that was pure negligence. Within the Nigerian health sector then and now, medical personnel aren't held to account for any wrongdoing with respect patient care.

I returned to UK, country of birth at the age of 19 along with my brother. My late sister had already been living in the UK for over a decade by that time. I proceeded with life pursuing my studies, knowing that bre*st cancer was the illness that my mum died of and doing my best to find out a bit more of the disease. A Level Biology surprisingly gave me some insight into the growth and spread of cancer cells.

However, as a twenty-something, I thought I was too young to have any issues with my bre*sts which I had started checking regularly as an older woman advised me to.

Little did I know that at the age of 23, I will be lying on my GP's examination table because of lumps in my left bre*st. Even though scans and biopsies showed that the lumps were benign, I was offered surgery as a precautionary measure due to my family history.

I'd like to stress here that bre*st examinations are so important for every man and woman. (Even though majority of bre*st cancer patients are women, there are some male patients as well). Regular bre*st checks ensure that you know what's normal for you so that you can spot problems as you see certain changes to look for.

At the age of 29, a year after my daughter was born, I had a second surgery on my left bre*st to remove the same kind of benign lumps as before. After that surgery, I thought I was home free, and that as a family we never had to worry about bre*st issues ever again. How wrong I was. 6 years later, to our profound shock, my big sister was then diagnosed with Stage 3 bre*st cancer.

As a Christian, my first response was to get on my knees and start praying even as the reality of what my sister faced became apparent. Over the following 5 years, my sister fought bravely, until her body could not take anymore and she passed away January 2017.

After my sister was diagnosed, I went to my GP to ask for stronger painkillers to deal with the migraines I was having at the time. Due to the strength of the painkillers that I already had, he proceeded to ask me what was happening in my life. His verdict was that I was under a lot of stress and should take time off work. This was something I never thought I would experience as I figured I was made of sterner stuff. He also told me that I should consider undergoing bilateral mastectomy for risk-reducing purposes. As I was vigilant about my bre*st checks, I didn't think I needed that.

I was also referred to the Cancer Genetics Department at the hospital who took family history and conducted the genetic test. My results, as well as my late sister's, came back negative. I then had a mammogram which revealed certain specks in my right bre*st. A 3rd bre*st surgery followed to remove pre-cancer cells from the right bre*st. As far as the bre*st surgeon was concerned, everything was fine and I just had to continue my bre*st checks. I had a mammogram later that year that came back completely clear. To say that I was relieved is an understatement.

My relief was short-lived, when 5 months later I felt some lumps in my right bre*st. After a lot of praying and soul-searching, I decided that the risk-reducing bilateral mastectomy was the right decision for me. That surgery, which included immediate reconstruction using tissue from my belly, took twelve and a half hours. As part of medical procedure, the bre*st tissue taken was sent for testing.

To my shock, 6 weeks after the big surgery, I was sitting in front of my bre*st surgeon being told that Invasive DCIS (ductal carcinoma in situ) in layman terms early bre*st cancer was found in the left bre*st which hadn't had any problems for years and nothing untoward showed up on the mammogram. I had surgery to take some samples from my lymph nodes to check whether it had spread or not. Thank God it hadn't spread. I was initially offered chemotherapy, which I declined for personal reasons. I then went on to have 3 more surgeries in the following two and a half years. I am now on a bre*st cancer drug which I will take for another 7 years.

My prognosis is good today, due to early diagnosis. Throughout these ordeals, my faith in God, excellent medical teams and the support of my loved ones were what keeps me standing. There is no doubt that my regular bre*st checks were a crucial part of this so I knew when to seek medical attention.

This is so important! Know your bre*sts. That knowledge might save you life, sparing you and your loved ones a lot of anguish.

After my diagnosis, I started journaling my experiences right from when my mother was diagnosed. 2 years after diagnosis, I signed my book publishing contract and decided to pursue my passions as a coach, author and speaker.

My personal mission and purpose is to tend the broken wings of people so that they can be inspired to soar above their troubles.

My first book: Navigating Your New Normal: A Road Map for Life Fulfilment After Trauma was published 26th September 2017 and is available on Amazon.

From the book, I have developed a 7-step framework NYNN© to help people go from survival to thriving after trials. There is also NYNN© for managers to help them better support employees affected by trauma in order to achieve win-win for all parties.

He confessed: "We were at Ojota around 5a.m. after leaving Felabration venue to board a bus to Ikorodu. I dipped my hand into another passenger's pocket, when we were rushing to board a bus and I removed his phone and passed it to my colleague, Ayobami and Jide.

"The owner held my hand and prevented me from joining the bus. Ayobami and Jide, who I gave the stolen phone to, went away, while RRS operatives arrested me."

Osinbajo blames churches for aiding corruption | Mr Olumide's Blog

Posted: 16 Oct 2017 02:11 AM PDT

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo at the Kingdom Summit 2017 of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), blamed the Churches for not speaking against corruption.

Osinbajo, who was at the Kings Court Parish, Victoria Island, Lagos, on Sunday, remarked that corruption in the country still existed because the church had failed to speak against.

They failed to speak against graft simply because those involved in graft had relationships with them.

According to NAN Osinbajo also urged Christians against putting tribe above other things.

He said that at creation, there was no difference in the nature of man and everyone related in an atmosphere devoid of tribe or other differences.

"The canal nature of man is that he places his tribe above others but the only basis for the power and unity of the church is that there is no Jew or Gentile.''

He also advised the faithful to avoid divisive issues as much as they did to foolish disputes.

Buhari’s Presidency: We Have Nothing To Show For Being In Power – North

Posted: 16 Oct 2017 02:09 AM PDT

The North has disagreed with those who have branded President Muhammadu Buhari a sectional leader, saying there is nothing in the region to show that he has favoured the area more than other parts of the country.

Leaders, who were in unison on the position, therefore, challenged those crying marginalisation to come out with verifiable statistics to show in which areas Buhari's kinsmen have advantages.

President Buhari has come under fire over a statement credited to the President of the World Bank, Mr. Jim Yong Kim that Buhari specifically requested that the bank shifts focus to the northern region.

But, a cross section of northern leaders and groups, in separate interviews with New Telegraph at the weekend, described insinuations that Buhari is favouring the North as unfounded.

They claimed that the North only has the presidency, while the South is holding power.

The northern leaders say, "the infrastructure projects that have been carried out in the last two and half years are the Lagos/Ibadan Expressway; the Second Niger Bridge at Asaba; the ongoing East/West Road; the rail project from Lagos to Calabar. Go and check them out.

"These are the key projects of this administration and none of them is in the North."

Retired ASP, Serving Police Sergeant Arrested For Robbery In Lagos Hotel

Posted: 16 Oct 2017 01:44 AM PDT

A Police Sergeant serving at Oworo Police Division, Lagos, Yakubu Aiyegba, and a retired Assistant Superintendent of Police, Obosa Augustine, have been arrested for alleged robbery.
The men were apprehended along with a taxi driver identified as Godwin George by operatives from the Shasha Police Station in Lagos.

It was learnt that Aiyegba and Augustine were notorious for raiding a hotel in Egbeda and extorting money from guests in the facility.

They reportedly paraded themselves as operatives of Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Lagos Command.

They were said to have forcefully collected a sum of N50,000 and a laptop from an unnamed guest a few weeks ago and fled the area in a taxi driven by George.

According to Punch, the three suspects, led by the retired ASP, went back to the facility – Ehis Hotel – on Wednesday on another extortionate raid.

They were allegedly in the middle of the act when operatives from the Shasha division, who acted on a tip-off, stormed the hotel and picked them up.

The suspects were subsequently transferred to SARS in Ikeja.

A police source said that the command had been monitoring Augustine and Aiyegba for some time after receiving complaints from the hotel.

In a chat with Punch, Aiyegba, a 39-year-old Kogi State indigene, said they did not go to the hotel to rob. He said they were friends to the hotel manager, one Kingsley, who normally gave them money.

He said, "Two weeks ago, we visited Kingsley at the hotel and saw some people smoking on the premises. We threatened to arrest them, but they begged us. Because of our friend, Kingsley, we left them.

"At times when we visit Kingsley, he would give us N1,000 to buy cola nuts. We don't normally disturb him. On Wednesday, Supol (Augustine) told me that Kingsley called him that we should come.

"On getting there, we met some boys smoking. When they sighted us, they called their friends to fight us. Policemen from Shasha division later came to arrest us."

The 52-year-old retired officer, who hails from Edo State, said he went to the hotel because of the good rapport he had with Kingsley before he retired from the force.

"I have four children and a wife. I retired this year while at the Idimu Police Division. The manager always gives me money. He called me on Wednesday to come and collect money.

"As we got there, somebody said we collected N50,000 and a laptop from him three weeks ago, which is just an allegation. We didn't rob anybody. We did not impersonate SARS," he added.

On his part, George, the taxi driver, stated that he was not involved in the alleged robbery, adding that he stayed outside the hotel.

He said, "I know Aiyegba as a policeman and he introduced me to Mr. Augustine. I have taken them to the hotel thrice. They would give me a drink and ask me to stay outside.

"After meeting with the manager, they would fuel my car or give me N1,500."

The Lagos Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Olarinde Famous-Cole, confirmed the arrest, adding that investigations were ongoing.

Sadie Grace Andrews, the third-youngest of six siblings, was pulled Saturday from an in-ground container used to trap cooking grease at Brewster's Real Ice Cream in Auburn.
Lee County Coroner Bill Harris said in a news release that the death appears to be an accidental drowning.

He said video evidence from the scene showed the girl playing with siblings when she apparently fell through a lid covering a grease pit on the ice cream parlor's property.

ABC NEWS reports Harris as saying that the girl was found several minutes later inside the grease container, which was 6 feet (1.8 meters) deep.

He said no foul play is suspected.
