6 Killed, Many Injured As Cultist Clash In Lagos

Posted: 19 Sep 2017 03:59 AM PDT

No fewer than six persons were yesterday confirmed dead with others injured in a cult war in Lagos.
An eyewitness said the six were killed when a notorious cult leader, armed with a sophisticated rifle, led his gang in a clash with youths at Okepopo and Onola area, on the Island, who were armed with Dane guns.

The eyewitness claimed that the cult leader had vowed to take revenge on three of his gang members from Okepopo, who were lynched by Onola boys earlier this year.

The source said: "To make his plan successful, he bought a new gun and has been looking for an opportunity to execute his mission. He succeeded during the 155th year celebration of Epetedo's existence.

"He and his gang, during the occasion, pursued Onola boys, who left the area at about 3.30a.m. and attacked them along Tokunbo Street, killing two of them.

"Also, on Friday night, one of the Onola youths was shot dead by the cult leader at Atiko area on the Island. Another boy was also shot dead by same cult leader on Sunday afternoon along Branco Street and two others were shot dead at Okepopo area, when the Onola boys went for a reprisal attack on yesterday morning."

Meanwhile, police from Area 'A' command, Lion Building, yesterday, raided an undisclosed hotel where some cult members go to hide after operations and some of them were arrested.

Boss Who's Gay Allegedly Killed Apprentice for Dating Lady

Posted: 19 Sep 2017 03:59 AM PDT

What a life! An artisan, Samarola Musa, has allegedly beaten his apprentice, Ademola Adeshina, to death for his refusal to stop dating a lady in the Lugbe area of Abuja.

Musa, who is facing a homicide charge at a Federal Capital Territory High Court, Gwagwalada, Abuja, is believed to have had a homo-s*xual relationship with the 24-year-old man.

It was learnt that autopsy indicated that Ademola died from the beating he received from Musa.

The report also showed that the furniture maker had sodomised his apprentice before his death in May 2017.

Musa, 42, in his statement to the police, said he slapped the deceased after he caught him having s*x with the lady, identified simply as Precious, in his workshop, claiming that Ademola died of malaria a week after the incident.

But Ademola's father, Okuneye, faulted Musa's claims, stressing that the son died from the beatings he received from the former bouncer, who he described as a "huge" man.

He told Punch that Musa had once informed him that Ademola was dating a lady he did not approve of, adding that he warned the deceased to stop going out with the lady.

The bereaved father said his son called him on May 3, two days before his death that he had malaria, adding that he visited him at the workshop and found him working.

"About 48 hours after, I got a text message from Musa asking me to call him back urgently. I did and he simply told me that my son had passed away; I was shocked. He said he was at Asokoro General Hospital and when I got there, I found my son lying in the back seat of his Honda Accord car with his face against the glass window," he said.

Mr. Okuneye said the accused informed him that his son died of malaria and suggested that the body should be buried, but he insisted on depositing it in a morgue.

The engineer explained that after returning home, he received a call from Precious, who narrated to him how Musa beat his son to death.

He said, "The girl said she witnessed the assault and when she confronted Musa, he injured her in the leg. I asked if she was ready to make a statement at the police station about it and she agreed.

"Musa was arrested and he admitted to beating my boy because he was dating the girl. We did a post-mortem on the body and it showed that Ademola suffered serious internal injury from the beating.

"The autopsy also showed that the boy was sodomised; it was after this that we got to know that Musa is a well known homo-s*xual in Lugbe and its environs; he had been sleeping with my son and he killed him because he was dating a woman."

It was gathered that the family had made plans to bury the deceased last Saturday, but police declined to grant them the permission to carry out the funeral.

The accused was remanded in Kuje prisons by the court on Monday, while the case was adjourned till November 20, 2017.

Rampage As Driver R*pes Female Student

Posted: 19 Sep 2017 03:29 AM PDT

Students of the College of Education, Ikere-Ekiti, Ekiti State, embarked on violent demonstration on Monday to protect alleged r*pe of a female colleague (names withheld) by a bus driver.

The 200 Level student was allegedly r*ped by a commercial bus driver conveying her back to school along College/Igbara Odo way on Sunday.

The lady, said to be having malaria, had left the campus for medication in town...
But while she was returning to school about 8p.m.the driver, popularly called Akoto, suddenly stopped the bus on the way and forcefully had s*x with her.

Enraged, students who got wind of the incident, took to the streets to protest the assault.

The students blocked the Ado-Ikere-Akure Road, which caused disruption of traffic flow for hours.

Many travelling to Akure had to return to Ado-Ekiti to prevent being caught in the web of violence.

It was learnt that the lady has been taken to the hospital for treatment.

The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Alberto Adeyemi, confirmed the incident. He said r*pe was the highest point of criminality which would not be tolerated.

The PPRO added that normalcy had returned to the town and that the police had launched manhunt for the alleged r*pist.

Zimbabwe moves to ban sales of alcohol during weekdays | Mr Olumide's Blog

Posted: 19 Sep 2017 03:13 AM PDT

In order to curb abuse, the Zimbabwean government is planning to enact a law barring the sale of alcohol from Monday to Friday, and to expectant women.

The new law will particularly target motor vehicle drivers, who will face arrest if found driving with blood alcohol concentration levels going beyond 0,08 per 100ml, The Zimbabwe Mail reports.

Former Zimbabwe health minister Timothy Stamps, now serving as health adviser in the office of the president is credited to be the sponsor of the new National Alcohol Policy.

According to Sunday Mail, another Zimbabwean newspaper, retailers found selling the drink to expectant women will also be prosecuted.

The policy recommends that alcohol advertisements should be done at least 100 metres away from a road intersection, school, clinic, hospital, church and old people's homes.

"Policies are there to give guidance to the general populace and various stakeholders. The reduction of alcohol abuse can be done partly through the law but the rest will be through moral suasion," the newspapers quoted Stamps as saying.

Critics of the proposed regulations have however taken issue with its impact on profitability for retailers. They say it would force many of them out of business in a country where unemployment is a big problem.

Jonathan slams Lai Mohammed, condemns deployment of soldiers to the South | Mr Olumide's Blog

Posted: 19 Sep 2017 03:13 AM PDT

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has criticised his successor, President Muhammadu Buhari, for planning to extend the military show of force to the South-South and the South-West.He also slammed Lai Mohammed for claiming IPOB is sponsored by politicians who lost 2015 elections.

Jonathan said this in a Facebook post on Tuesday which was signed on his behalf by his aide, Reno Omokri.
It reads

The insinuations in the press conference given by Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, on Sunday the 17th of September 2017, accusing the opposition of sponsoring the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, and the fact that he mentioned that Nnamdi Kanu preached Nigerian unity during the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan is another clear indication that the present administration has not left propaganda mode for proper agenda mode two and a half year into their tenure.
If the government in which Lai Mohammed serves, knows which opposition members are sponsoring IPOB, then they should identify them, arrest them and then prosecute them.
Ever since Lai Mohammed made his ill advised statement, a principal member of the All Progressive Congress government and the Senate President, Senator Bukola Saraki, has come out to say that the actions in the Southeast are troubling and some of it are unconstitutional. Is he also sponsoring IPOB too?
It is our suspicion that Lai Mohammed is talking from history seeing as he criticized the Jonathan government for banning Boko Haram in a statement he released on June 10, 2013, even though the Jonathan government had gone through due process before proscribing that murderous sect.
Perhaps Lai Mohammed thinks everybody is like him and those he represents.
I also commend the governors of the Southeast for cooperating with the military and in the process saving lives and property. It is a noble act that should not be ignored.
However, we want to advise the Buhari administration, which has announced plans to extend the military show of force to the Southsouth and the Southwest through Operation Crocodile Smile, to tread with caution.
Nigeria is no longer under military rule. In a democracy, you separate the military from the police. The military is not meant to fight criminality within a nation because they are trained to fight a nation's external enemies.
It is the police that are trained to fight crime Internally.
When the military starts doing the job of the police and starts fighting or doing what they call a 'show of force', the effect will not be to reduce crime. The effect will be to intimidate people.
Let me say again to Lai Mohammed, the time for propaganda is gone. The time for blaming Dr. Goodluck Jonathan for all the unfulfilled promises of the APC government is over. Nigerians are no longer buying it.
Rome may not have been built in a day, but from day one you could see evidence of builders building up Rome. But what have we seen in the last two and a half years of the Muhammadu Buhari administration? We see a government that from day one has been blaming instead of building.
Finally, I seize this opportunity to remind Lai Mohammed that under the Jonathan administration the ministry of information had annual ministerial briefing where the media and civil society groups interrogated cabinet ministers on the activities of their departments. 100 days briefing was given to Nigerians on the government's vision and one year briefings was given to the nation on government activities. An elaborate mid term briefing was also given by that government to the country on the achievements of the administration.
Lai Mohammed should think about these as information minister and should know that he is minister for information not minister for propaganda.
Reno Omokri, for (Dr. Goodluck Jonathan)

Multi-Billion Dollars fraud: US, UK to freeze Diezani's friend, Kola Aluko’s Accounts

Posted: 19 Sep 2017 02:59 AM PDT

Wanted rich businessman, Kola Aluko, who is also an ally of embattled former Minister of Petroleum, Diezani Alison-Madueke, has sold off at least four properties as he continues to hide.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has, therefore, written to the US Government asking it to freeze the accounts where the proceeds of the sales were paid into.

Documents seen by Punch showed that between May 2016 and August 2017, Aluko had hurriedly sold the properties through an opaque procedure.

The properties sold include: a house at 755 Sarbonne Road, Los Angeles, California, 90077, USA and a house at 952 North Alpine Drive, Beverly Hills, California 80210, the neighbourhood of notable Hollywood stars such as Sylvester Stallone and Steven Spielberg.

Other properties he sold include: a house at 1948 Tollis Avenue, Santa Barbara, California, USA.

They are suspected to have been sold in an off-market transaction using a limited liability company. An off-market sale in real estate refers to a property sold without any form of public advertising.

Forbes Magazine had reported last year that the property located at 755 Sarbonne Road, Los Angeles, was sold for $21.5m, taking a $3m loss after purchasing the sprawling residence in 2012 for $24.5m.

The said property was also sold in a similar manner barely two weeks before the EFCC was able to secure a Federal High Court order granting a Mareva injunction permitting the Nigerian Government to freeze assets owned by Aluko across the world.

Since the order, Aluko was said to have sold another three properties thereby frustrating attempts to seize them.

The EFCC in an application asked the US Government to ensure that the funds obtained from "the sale of the houses are, restrained if possible."

It was also learnt that the anti-graft agency is seeking the seizure of three private jets allegedly belonging to Aluko as well as a yacht worth over $80m.

Other properties belonging to Aluko which the US has filed a civil forfeiture over include:
A house at 157 West 57 Street New York, 10028 USA; a house at 1049 Fifth Avenue, New York, 10028 USA; a house at 815 Cima Del Mundo Road Santa Barbara, California, 93018, USA; a house at 807 Cima Del Mundo Road Santa Barbara, California, 93018, USA and a yacht known as Galactica Star worth over $80m.

It was learnt that EFCC had also written to the British authorities for the forfeiture of Aluko's assets.

The two properties in the UK include a house at 32 Grove End Road, London and a flat at One Hyde Park, 100 Knightsbridge, SW1X 7U, UK.

It was learnt that the Federal Government had triggered the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty with the British Government for the seizure of the properties.

The commission has also identified five properties belonging to Aluko in Canada, Switzerland and the United Arab Emirates.

A source at the EFCC said, "We identified three of Aluko's properties in Switzerland. They include one at Via Magio 6, Montagnola 6926; one at Vila Floridiana Via Cantonale 176948 Porza Lugano and one at Colina D'Oro Montagnola.

"We have sent a request to the Swiss authorities and it has been vetted by the Swiss authorities. Action will be taken soon. A team from the EFCC is due in the United States and Switzerland any time from now to harmonise the details of the letter."

For a long time, Aluko had been linked as a business associate of Diezani, who is under investigation by the Nigerian and British authorities for multi-billion money laundering and embezzlement.

Update On Suspended ASUU Strike

Posted: 19 Sep 2017 02:59 AM PDT

After 36 days, the Academic Staff Union of Universities has suspended its strike following a 4-hour meeting with the Federal Government delegation, which ended around 9pm in Abuja on Monday.

The ASUU President, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, addressed a briefing at the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) secretariat to announce the union's "conditional suspension of the strike."

Ogunyemi said the strike was suspended, after the union gave the Federal Government a deadline of the end of October to fulfil its promises.

He said, "We have signed a new Memorandum of Action today (Monday). Each item on the list in the MoA has a timeline attached. It is our hope that our trust will not be dashed again. We hope that the government will abide with the timeline attached to all the items in the MoA.

"Let us give a precautionary advice; should the government unilaterally vary the agreements it signed with our union, we should not be held responsible for the consequences.

"Now on the conditional suspension of the strike; after an elaborate and extensive consultation process, the National Executive Council of ASUU has agreed to conditionally suspend the ongoing action, taking into cognizance that the latest proposal by the government to address the contentious issues in the strike has a deadline of the end of October 2017.

"So, all members of ASUU are to resume work after their branch congresses on Tuesday (today), September 19. However, ASUU will not hesitate to review its position, should the government renege on its MoA, which you all witnessed today.

"There is always a question that why must ASUU adopt the strike option considering its impact on the quality of education which the union wants to raise. The answer to this is simple. ASUU's resolve to forge a hitch-free academic calendar has been proved by the restraints it often showed before embarking on the strike.

"The current strike has been necessitated by the non-implementation of the 2009 agreement and the 2013 MoU and the 2016 resolutions. Specifically, the issues include funding for the revitalisation of universities, earned academic allowances and exemption of the university system from the Treasury Single Account."

During the final four-hour meeting between ASUU and the Federal Government delegation led by the Minister of Labour, Chris Ngige, both parties signed a MoA to finalise their decisions.

The MoA was presented to ASUU, representatives of Minister of Education, the Accountant-General of the Federation, representatives of the Minister of Finance, the Minister of Budget and Planning, and officials of the salary and wages commission.

Poor State Of A Magistrate Court In Benue State (Photos)

Posted: 19 Sep 2017 02:29 AM PDT

According Bem Jabez, who visited one of the Magistrate courts in Makurdi, the Benue state capital on Monday morning, the place is a bad shape. He shared the photos and wrote:

A visit to the MAGISTRATE COURTS in Benue State will bring you face to face to a house that can best be described as PIG HOUSING.
The images below are that of the MAGISTRATE court situated at MAKURDI MODERN MARKET court 3 to be precise.
This morning the whole court was filled with water licking from the ceiling, court attendants had to wait outside for hours as a result of the inhabitable nature of the court at that time.
The CEILINGS are spoilt with no chairs to seat upon.
The building floor is no longer befitting of a place housing responsible people that always patronizes this courts.
At the entrance, one is usually greeted with an awful smell the type that comes from the Toilet.
My appeal to the Benue State government. The judiciary which is the third arm of our government can not be neglected to this length.
The past administration might have neglected this Sector but the present can do better.
Let this COURTS be renovated and maintenance be ensured.

10 Reasons Why "Small Sins" Are So Dangerous

Posted: 19 Sep 2017 01:29 AM PDT

When I was a little girl, a friend told me about the difference between lies and "white" lies. "White" lies are the little lies we tell that don't hurt anyone, like telling your friend she looks good in that dress even if she doesn't or telling your spouse you didn't take something when indeed you did.

It's ok to tell a white lie, right?

Too bad the Bible doesn't agree.

Matthew 5:28 warns that "anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart." Verse 29 continues, "If your right eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell." Looking at something is just as bad as actually committing the sin. Why?

God desires full intimacy and community with Him. When we hide our true selves from Him or others, we short change the fulfillment an intimate relationship with God can bring.

Jerry Bridges, author of the book Respectable Sins writes, "The motivation for this book stems from a growing conviction that those of us whom I call conservative evangelicals may have become so preoccupied with some of the major sins of society that we have lost sight of the need to deal with our own more 'refined' or subtle sins."

Here are 10 reasons why those white lies and other small sins can be so dangerous:

1. They go unnoticed and therefore unaddressed.
When I think I am doing well, pride sets in. Pride in itself is sin, but if I don't confess it and assume a posture of humility, I can deceive myself into thinking I am better than someone else, leading to a self-righteous attitude. Pride is a scary sin, because we don't see our need for repentance and therefore move further away from God.

2. They corrupt other parts of you.
Luke 11: 34 says, "the eyes are the lamp of the body. When your eyes are healthy, your body is also full of light. But when they are unhealthy, your body is also full of darkness." Your eyes are the gateway to sin. When your eyes look at something, it leads to sinful thoughts. If unchecked, it reaches your heart, which translates into action. It is best to keep your eyes clean and your heart will follow.

3. They rob us of an intimate relationship with God.
God wanted fellowship with Adam and Eve. But when they kept their sin hidden and instead blamed each other ("that woman you put with me") drove a wedge between true fellowship and pseudo-intimacy. Their lives were never the same. If we continue down that path, our lives won't either.

4. They stunt our spiritual growth.
Without intimate fellowship, God can't speak into our lives because sin separates us from Him. Because of this, discipleship and growth are stunted, preventing us from reaching the finish line in the race we run towards God.

5. They turn into bigger sins.
Remember those white lies? It never stops with just one lie, does it? Soon one lie leads to another, and soon those small lies have grown into something beyond our control. Like a snowball, each sin gathers until it becomes so big, it knocks out whatever enters its path.

6. They isolate us.
There is no such thing as a sin that doesn't hurt anyone. If we are doing the Christian life together, all sin separates us. If sin can separate us from God, how much more does it affect the people we surround ourselves with?

7. They ruin our character.
We are all sinners. But if we don't act with integrity with others, will we prove ourselves trustworthy? Will Christianity be proven trustworthy?

8. They make us hypocrites, corrupting our witness.
At the time of this writing, Joel Osteen is under fire for allegedly not opening his church doors to victims of hurricane Harvey. Although there are conflicting reports as to Lakewood Church's role in the relief efforts, one thing is clear: the world is watching. And it expects us to be who we say we are. If we call ourselves like Jesus. If Jesus was known for love and compassion, our actions should be similar. If we claim to follow the One who claimed to be the Way the truth and the Life, then we need to lives filled with truth. Anything less makes the gospel appear false.

9. They put a stain on the bride's dress.
If you are as accident prone as me, you know that white is the worst color to spill something on. Even the tiniest of food that drops onto a white fabric is visible no matter how hard I clean it. The sins I commit, even when I think no one is looking, make a stain on my dress that is impossible to get out. Scriptures makes several parallels between the Church being God's Bride. This puts me one step further from being ready for when the Groom comes for me.

10. They make me unflavorful.
Salt is a great spice that brings out the flavor in my food. When I don't use salt, my food is bland and dull. My job is to be salt to the world around me. But when sin gets in the way of my witness, it makes me unfit for the work God has for me. Paul describes us "the aroma of Christ" (2 Corinthians 2:15-16). We should give people a taste of Jesus too.

Teen Mum left baby to starve to death while she went partying for a week | Mr Olumide's Blog

Posted: 19 Sep 2017 12:38 AM PDT

A mum left her baby to starve to death while she went partying for a week, police in Russia said.

Viktoria Kuznetsova faces 10 years in jail over the tragic death of her nine-month-old son Egor.
The 17-year-old, from Rostov in northern Russia, waited until her husband left for military service before abandoning the child, it is alleged.
She stayed in various student accommodation for a week before the alarm was raised.

Neighbours became concerned when they hadn't seen either Kuznetsova or Egor and called police, news channel NTV said.

The child's remains were found in the home.

According to reports, Kuznetsova had told friends the baby was with her aunt.

Kuznetsova has been arrested and faces up to 10 years in jail.

She reportedly confessed to police and said she had tried to give the child to an orphanage when he was a month old - but he was later returned.

What’s The Difference Between Doubt and Unbelief?

Posted: 19 Sep 2017 12:29 AM PDT

This is a really good question! There are four parts to the answer.

1. You can't have faith without questions.
This is true for the simple reason that God has chosen to keep many secrets. "The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things that are revealed belong to us and to our children" (Deuteronomy 29:29). There are certain things God has revealed: That's what makes faith possible.

There are certain things God has kept secret: That's what makes faith necessary.

Paul says, "Now I know in part…" (1 Corinthians 13:12). We know in part, and that is why we walk by faith and not by sight. Faith lives with unanswered questions. You cannot live in this world without asking, "Why?" We live with the mysteries of evil and suffering.

Just as it's part of Christian faith to say we know what God has revealed, it is part of Christian humility to say we do not know what God has kept secret.

When massive suffering comes close to home as it did on September 11, 2001, the world will say to us, "How do you explain this?" as if faith depended on having all the answers. But if you had all the answers, then you would have no need of faith.

The day will come when "we will know fully, even as we are fully known." But on that day faith will no longer be necessary. Faith will be turned to sight, and we will behold him! Until then, we will have faith with questions, and that will be a normal experience of the Christian life.

2. You can only doubt what you already believe.
Doubt is not the absence of faith; doubt is the questioning of faith. You can only doubt what you already believe.

When a Christian doubts, he fears God may not exist. The Christian believes there is a God, and when he doubts, he questions what he believes. When an atheist doubts, he fears God may exist. The atheist believes there is no god and so, by definition, a doubting atheist would be someone who was questioning his unbelief!

Doubt presupposes some kind of faith. That is what doubt is, and it is one of the most common struggles in the Christian life.

3. Doubt and unbelief are different.
It's important to grasp the difference between doubt and unbelief. Doubt is questioning what you believe. Unbelief is a determined refusal to believe. Doubt is a struggle faced by the believer. Unbelief is a condition of the unbeliever.

Unbelief involves spiritual blindness and a determined resistance to God. Of persecuting believers, Paul said, "I acted in ignorance and unbelief." I could not understand the truth, (ignorance), and I was deeply resistant to the truth (unbelief).

That was his condition, and the only cure for it was what happened on the Damascus Road when he was wonderfully converted. He discovered that Jesus is Lord, and the whole disposition of his soul was changed by the power of the Holy Spirit. He moved from a position of unbelief to a position of faith.

There may be some people who feel their problem is doubt, when actually the real problem is their unbelief. The issue is not that they doubt their faith, but that they do not have a faith to doubt. They need to believe the things that God has revealed, and act upon them:
  • God has sent his Son into the world.
  • The Son of God loved you and gave himself for you.
  • He is risen from the dead and ascended into heaven.
  • You are more wicked than you ever thought possible, and at the same time…
  • You are more loved than you ever imagined.
God calls on you to repent from a self-centered life, and he offers you mercy, pardon, and forgiveness through his Son, Jesus. He offers his power and presence by the Holy Spirit, so that you're able to pursue life on his plan.

Paul moved from unbelief to faith as God worked a miracle in his life. Maybe that's precisely what needs to happen for you. God will give you that same gift if you will ask him.

4. You can help someone by discerning the difference.
Doubt and unbelief are different, so discerning the difference is of great importance.

You can see the difference in the story of a married couple – Job and his wife – who experienced a great family tragedy. In one day, they lost their business, wealth, property, and every one of their seven children died, as a house where they were holding a party collapsed on them.

Job and his wife were thrown into a tailspin. They responded in completely different ways.

Suffering exposed Job's love for God, as he wrestled with mysteries he could not understand, but it exposed his wife's unbelief: "Curse God and die," she said. Their response to suffering was the most revealing thing about them, and it will be one of the most revealing things about us.

We don't know what happened to Job's wife. We know that he had children later, and so it may be that God worked a miracle in her soul just like the miracle in the Apostle Paul.

My prayer is that God will use this to help those struggling with doubt to understand what's happening and find light in their darkness; that he will bring unbelievers to the miracle of new birth; and that he will equip us to minister to others who have faith with questions.
