Nnamdi Kanu To Be Sent Back To Prison?

Posted: 18 Aug 2017 03:57 AM PDT

The Federal Government has urged a Federal High Court in Abuja to revoke the bail it granted the pro-Biafra group, Indigenous People of Biafra leader, Nnamdi Kanu and return him to prison.

FG said Kanu has not only breached the conditions attached to the bail granted him on April 25 on health ground, he has also conducted himself in manners that threaten public peace.

It cited Kanu's alleged threat that elections would not hold in the East until the Fed Govt conduct referendum on whether or not Biafra should secede and instances where the IPOB leader addressed crowd exceeding 10 and threatened civil disobedience, as against the court's directive that he must not be seen in a crowd of over 10 people.

The government, in a counter-motion, dated August 1, 2017 filed by Magaji Labaran of the Federal Ministry of Justice, urged the court to dismiss an application by Kanu, seeking a review of the bail conditions.

It noted that not only had Kanu met the bail conditions and was enjoying the bail, it was an affront to the court's authority for the IPOB leader to approach the court for the review of the bail conditions, having allegedly breached the conditions.

"The offence for which he (Kanu) is standing trial is not ordinarily bailable; the court, not withstanding, granted bail to the 1st defendant/applicant (Kanu) on health grounds on 25th April 2017.

"Among other conditions for the bail of the 1st defendant is that he should not be seen in a crowd exceeding 10 people; that he should not grant any interviews, hold or attend any rallies; that he should file, in court, medical updates of his health status every month. The bail conditions were perfected by the 1stdefendant/applicant, which he is currently enjoying.

"Rather than observing all the conditions listed above, the 1st defendant, in fragrant disobedience to the court order, flouted all conditions given by the court.

"The 1st defendant equally incited his members to disrupt, disallow and boycott elections in South East states, starting with Anambra State gubernatorial election scheduled for November 18 if the Federal Government failed to hold referendum for the realisation of the state of Biafra.

"The 1st defendant has already declared the bail conditions given by the court unconstitutional before approaching this court with the application for variation. Rather than showing remorse for his actions, the 1st defendant approached this court with an application for a review of the same conditions for the bail which he grossly flouted.

"Considering the above, that the 1st applicant has violated the conditions on which the terms of his bail were premised, we urged this court to commit the defendant to prison by invoking the provision of Section 173(2)(B) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015.

"We categorically state that justice would have been denied the state by this court, if the state is not protected from the offences being perpetrated by the 1stdefendant/applicant, who is currently on bail," the Fed Govt said.

Kanu and four other suspected IPOB members – Chidiebere Onwudiwe, Benjamin Madubugwu, David Nwawuisi and Bright Chimezie – are being tried before the Federal High Court, Abuja on offences relating to conspiracy and treasonable felony.

(Photo) Nigerian lady sues American airlines for $3.4m over ruined wedding dress | Mr Olumide's Blog

Posted: 18 Aug 2017 03:51 AM PDT

A Nigerian woman is suing American airlines after they allegedly ruined her wedding dress.

The New Jersey based bride,Yewande Oteh and her family, Oteh, who was flying with the gown to Jamaica for her wedding, claims that an American Airlines ticket agent told her she could bring the gown onboard and store it in a hanging closet.

It was on the plane that Oteh alleges American Airlines flight attendant Melanie Masters "became indignant and agitated, and began to talk to plaintiff in a hostile aggressive way, instructing her that the closet space was not for passengers," leading to the dress being packed in an overhead bin.

Oteh then alleges that she the attendant, Masters put something in the bin later on the flight... and when the bin was opened later by airport workers (because Oteh didn't want to interact with Masters again), the dress was reportedly soaked through with red wine.

According to the Cosmopolitan ,Oteh is now suing American Airlines for not just the dress damages and various costs and fees, but also for causing physical and emotional distress. The total suit is asking for $3.4 million — $850,000 for each count of "Negligence, Intentional Infliction of Emotional Distress, Negligent Infliction of Emotional Distress and Negligent Hiring and Negligent Retention."

The alleged incident happened in 2015. Oteh's sister brought her a few wedding dresses from Florida. There are pictures of Oteh smiling at her wedding, wearing a different wedding dress from the one she'd hoped to wear.

Still, the lawsuit says that Oteh was so upset that some events during the festivities had to be canceled.
Masters, for her part, has this to say: "It really didn't go like that at all."

US court jails Nigerian hacker Obinna Obioha | Mr Olumide's Blog

Posted: 18 Aug 2017 03:16 AM PDT

Obinna Obioha, a Nigerian hacker has been jailed for 51 months by a New York federal judge for operating a fraud scheme that swindled $6.5 million from businesses in the U.S. and elsewhere.

U.S. District Judge David N. Hurd sentenced Obinna Obioha, 31, for running a scheme in which he instructed hackers to hack into computers and email accounts of individuals around the world using malicious software.

The announcement of Obioha's sentence was made by Acting United States Attorney Grant C. Jaquith and Vadim D. Thomas, Special Agent in Charge of the Albany Field Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

"Obioha, working from Nigeria, was a central figure in a fraud scheme using digital disguises and deceit to bilk businesses out of millions of dollars. We will continue to track down and bring to justice cyber criminals like Obioha no matter where they operate. I thank the FBI for its terrific work in this case identifying and apprehending Obioha," said Acting United States Attorney Grant C. Jaquith.

FBI Special Agent in Charge Vadim D. Thomas said:
"These schemes can rob individuals and businesses of their livelihood. Cyber-crime is a serious threat and the FBI is prepared to go to any lengths to apprehend those like Obioha."

As part of his guilty plea to wire fraud in April 2017, Obioha admitted that, while in Nigeria, he worked with and instructed others to hack into computers and email accounts used by dozens of victims in the United States and around the world. The organization infiltrated victims' computers and email accounts using malicious software ("malware"). After monitoring victims' information to identify imminent commercial transactions, Obioha and his associates created knockoff email addresses that appeared similar to – but varied slightly from – victims' legitimate email addresses.

Obioha and his associates used those bogus email accounts to send fraudulent invoices to victims, instructing them to wire funds to bank accounts controlled by Obioha and his associates, under the pretense that the wires were payments for actual deals that had been previously negotiated by the victims. Obioha admitted that between January and September 2016, he was involved in at least 50 wire transfers, and that about $6.5 million was sent by wire to bank accounts that he and his associates controlled. The accounts received money from fraud victims in New York, Florida, Illinois, Ohio, and Texas, among other places.

During today's sentencing, U.S. District Judge Donald N. Hurd described Obioha as "right in the middle of the action" in "very sophisticated criminal activity" designed to achieve "millions of dollars in illegal funds."

Obioha was arrested on October 6, 2016, after flying from Lagos, Nigeria, to JFK International Airport. He has been in custody since that time.

This case was investigated by the FBI and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Wayne A. Myers.

How to Start A Business While Still Working A Full-Time Job

Posted: 18 Aug 2017 01:52 AM PDT

It's not as impossible as you might think to start a business while on a 9-5 job. There are sure ways to make it work and Jumia Travel shares ways to start a business while working a full-time job.

First Validate Your Business Idea
This is very important because a business can't be successful if there is a lack of market need for its offerings. You should thus ensure that you validate your business idea before starting a business based on it. A business needs a lot more than the passion of its founder to be successful and sustainable. Ensure your business concepts and product ideas are fully thought out, useful and properly researched, and that there is ongoing feedback from your customers or target audience about your product or service. This is one sure way to guarantee business growth.

Be Committed
Commitment is one of the major things that will help you get through the hard and difficult times of starting a business while working a full-time job. To help with commitment, you can write a list of all your necessary activities and prioritize them. Try to lessen your involvement with or the time you give to activities that are not very relevant, and invest that time in your new business venture. It might not be the most convenient thing, but you have be determined to sacrifice as much as you can to make it work, without jeopardizing your full-time job or spreading yourself too thin. This is why prioritizing your activities is very important.

Consider Your Strengths, Interests and Weaknesses
To help you successfully start a business while working a full-time job, you should take an inventory of your strengths, interests and weaknesses. Your strengths and interests can culminate in you having some of the necessary skills to drive your business success. For the skills you don't have but are necessary for the success of your business (in other words, your areas of weakness), you can take time out to learn the skill, or outsource or hire someone else who has the required skill and can help you pick up the slack.

Outsource as Much as You Can
You might have the skills to do virtually everything related to your business, but because of your full-time job, the fact is that you just don't have the time. This is where outsourcing comes in, to help you pick up the slack and move your business forward. Focus on doing what you can do better than anyone else, and outsource the rest. To help save cost, you can consider outsourcing to people that will be willing to work for free or at a low cost. You can also consider offering some of the shares of your business to some of these people for coming on board, rather than paying them cash, if you consider the skills they are bringing into your business extremely valuable and vital to the growth of your business.

Try Not To Blur the Line Between Your Business Work and Your Full-Time Job
When push comes to shove, you're still being paid to work for your employer so you should ensure that you take care of the work for your full-time job when you need to. Avoid abandoning the work for your full-time job to take care of your business work. Give to Caesar what's Caesar's.

The Purpose Of Motherhood

Posted: 18 Aug 2017 01:27 AM PDT

With the sun in my eyes, windows rolled down, and radio cranked high, I belted out the words to Crystal Lewis' song along with her, believing every word was true.

"I will go wherever you lead,
be light in the dark, and be salt in the street.
I will go, no matter the cost.
I will live for the lost, so they'll know of the cross.
I will go."

So, on the crooked road home...

fresh from the ceremony where I had received my Masters degree in Counseling, my heart soared with the desire to go wherever God might lead. I boldly promised God that I was His girl, and that I would use all my gifts and talents to serve Him no matter what.

I meant it with all my heart.
Soon after, I found myself serving full time in crisis pregnancy ministry, reaching out to women who were making life and death decisions...decisions that would impact the rest of their lives. For ten brave years I poured my heart out for women in need in a work that felt very important. At Blue Ridge Women's Center (http://ift.tt/1mWG3Gy), I found a place where my passions and giftings met. I'm a truth-teller and a teacher. My greatest desire is to see the Word of God — His truth — open the eyes of the blind and help them see a different way. Working with women in their darkest hour gave me endless opportunities to see God at work in real and tangible ways.

Every day was an adventure! How would God provide? Whose life would He touch that day? What results would our ministry get that could impact the Kingdom of God for all eternity? What ways would I get in invest in other people's lives that might just make a difference?

My days serving at BRWC were some of the sweetest times of ministry I've ever had. I grew as a Christian while I watched God move in the women we served. Seeing His hand so clearly fueled my belief in what was possible for my own life. I saw the Gospel in action, and it changed me forever.

My Crystal Lewis-sized dream to be used by God as salt and light was coming true...and then I became a mother.

Days that had once been filled with purpose and passion quickly turned to days filled with diapers and defeat. At BRWC, I could see God working every day. At home, I could barely see Him at all. Any progress with my boys seemed slow and tedious, and came from a place of persistence and monotony. My ability to think clearly, energetically, and strategically seemed to turn to mush along with the carrots I tried in vain to get my littles to eat. My boys pushed me to the brink and back over and over again, and left me feeling useless, overwhelmed, and, if I'm honest, a little lost. Over time, instead of joyfully singing "I will go," I found myself skeptically asking, "Where are You taking me? Why am I here? "What is my purpose now?" and, "How do I use the gifts You gave me to make a difference here?"

I've talked to thousands of moms over the years, and almost all of them have had a similar experience. There's something about the purpose of a woman that feels lost when she becomes a mom. We struggle to understand what our current circumstances have to do with the purpose we once had. We find it hard to see how our giftings fit the motherhood mold, and sometimes, even have to lay them down altogether. Many of us lose our identities completely because our giftings were our purpose before we had children. When we suddenly can't use those gifts in the same way, or at all, anymore, we struggle to know what our new purpose is.

Actually, it never changed, we just didn't see it for what it really was.

In Acts chapter six, we find the disciples overwhelmed with the day-to-day work of the ministry. They'd been so focused on just preaching the Gospel that the needs of the church were being overlooked. Widows were being neglected and something had to be done to take care of their needs.

Instead of just digging in and working longer hours, the disciples decided they would choose, "...seven men of good repute, full of the Spirit and of wisdom..." (Acts 6:3) to be appointed to the duty of meeting those needs. One of those seven was a man named Stephen.

In comparison with other characters in the Bible, Stephen's story takes up relatively little space, but his life was used by God powerfully to ignite the Gospel and cause it to spread like wildfire to the early church. Clearly, he was a man who loved the Lord and had gifts uniquely suited for ministering to the poor and neglected of the church. He was chosen from among thousands to be the hands and feet of the disciples so they could be free to continue preaching and teaching, but we don't hear much about Stephen's widow ministry after the fact.

In fact, we never see the fulfillment of his appointment at all.

The very next section of the book of Acts shows Stephen, "...doing great wonders and signs among the people..." (Acts 6:8), and some of those people didn't like it. What follows is the story of Christianity's first martyr. Stephen boldly tells it like it is, accusing his accusers of being "...stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in heart and ears...resist[ing] the Holy Spirit" (Acts 7:51), and for his commitment to the cause of Christ, is murdered.

You might read that and think, "What in the world does that have to do with the purpose of motherhood?"

Everything.

As far as we know, Stephen's gifts were related to service — taking care of the poor — but he died fulfilling his purpose — to be spent for the Gospel, for the glory of Christ.

We don't have any indication from Scripture that Stephen died while in the act of ministering to widows. What we know is that he was willingly poured out — killed — in order to make much of the Gospel.

Mom, our giftings aren't our purpose. At various seasons of our lives we might get to use the gifts God's given us as a part of walking out our greater purpose, but there's nothing in the Bible that says using those gifts is our purpose. They were never ours to do with as we pleased, but His to advance His Kingdom through us in whatever way He saw fit. We can choose to get lost in the fact that motherhood changes the way our gifts are used for a time, or we can hold them loosely, embracing our deeper purpose — to be poured out for the sake of the Gospel however God requires.

Knowing this, will we still go? Will we be salt and light in our homes instead of the street? Will we live to show our children the cross no matter the cost? Will we let go of our grip on our gifts and release the need to have significance because of them, finding our significance instead in the finished work of Christ?

If so, we'll break free of the disappointment motherhood sometimes brings, and even find joy in the difficult days of weariness and defeat knowing we're fulfilling our ultimate purpose, not just as a mother, but as a child of God — to follow Christ wherever He leads, allowing Him to use our lives — and our gifts — in the way that brings HIM the most glory.

UNILAG Male Student Lures Female Student & R*pes Her

Posted: 18 Aug 2017 01:27 AM PDT

A randy student of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) has found himself in serious trouble after he reportedly took advantage of a fellow student.

The 400L student, identified as Oluwaseyi Anyiam, appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates' Court in Lagos for allegedly defiling a fellow student.

Anyiam, 22, who pleaded 'not guilty' to a charge of s*xual assault, is studying Actuarial Sciences. He resides at Ogundare Street in Aguda, Surulere, Lagos.

The Prosecutor, Inspector Simeon Imhonwa, said the guy committed the offence at Alaogomeji area of Ebute-Meta, Lagos on August 3 around 2 p.m.

"The accused had forceful carnal knowledge of the victim, without her consent. The accused had earlier invited the victim to an eatery at Alaogomeji, but on getting there, he told her that he forgot something at his house and they should both go to pick it.

"When they got to the house, they met some of Anyiam's friends at home playing loud music; so, they excused themselves and went into the room."

The Inspector alleged that the accused offered the victim a drink which she declined and in the process, he started touching, kissing and inserting fingers into her private part.

"The victim struggled with the accused, but it was fruitless because of the loud music his friends were playing and his threat. He eventually had carnal knowledge of her without her consent."

The prosecutor said the case was brought by the authorities of the University of Lagos to the office of the Lagos State Domestic and S*xual Violence Response Team.

The DSVRT coordinator, Mrs. Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, said the case was reported to her office on August 7 and that necessary actions were taken immediately.

"On August 9, the team went to UNILAG to get the perpetrators but was told they had been transferred to the Sabo Police Division. We went to the police station, but we were told the parties had resolved the issues.

"The survivor advocate requested to see the affected person the following day to ascertain the truth.

"On August 10, DSVRT met with the survivor and her parents. They said they wanted to prosecute but were informed that they were going to be stigmatised if they did and that the survivor's education would be affected.

"Afterwards, the team counselled the family and made them to realise that there was no stigma in reporting a crime.''

According to NAN, the Chief Magistrate, Mrs. B.O. Osunsanmi, granted the accused bail in the sum of N500,000 with two reputable sureties with verifiable addresses.

Osunsanmi said the sureties must provide evidence of two-year tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

She referred the case file to the office of director of public prosecutions for advice and adjourned the matter to October 19.

Flood kills father, two children in Lokogoma

Posted: 18 Aug 2017 01:11 AM PDT

A man and his two children lost their lives yesterday in a flesh flood occasioned by early morning downpour, in the Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The tragic incident happened between 7 and 9 am in Lokogoma housing area of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), in the nation's capital.
It was gathered that corpse of the man, simply identified as Kenneth, alongside those of his daughter and son (aged 15 and 11years) were found trapped inside a Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) in the middle of a stream in the area.
It was also learnt that late Kenneth was conveying his two children in a white Honda SUV, to a school for summer lesson when they ran into a flash flood at Pengassan Estate, Phase 2 junction.
According to eyewitness accounts, some locals retrieved the victims, who were said to be residents of IPENT 5 Estate in Lokogoma.
At the scene of the tragedy, some neighbours and sympathisers of the deceased family, the man and his children met their untimely death because he failed to heed to a warning by some commuters, due to the force of the flood, and advised him to wait till the water subsides.
Briefing newsmen on the development, the Director General of FCT Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Idriss Abbas disclosed that rescue officials got to the place when some residents had already rescued the bodies of the victims.
"My team got to the place late the dead bodies of the man and his children had been rescued by some locals.
"We could not carry out further assessment of the situation because of the angry mob on the scene.
"We also gathered that the dead bodies had been deposited at the Federal Medical Centre, Jabi" Abbass said.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of Pengassan Estate, one of the adjourning estates in the area, Mr. Imoudu Okpogha, said that lamented the frequency of flash floods in the area, saying it's a nightmare that residents have continued to grapple with.
Okpogha stressed that flooding menace has made life unbearable to the residents of estates in Lokogoma.
This, he said persists despite cries by the various residents' associations to the Federal Capital Territory Development Authority (FCDA) to provide basic infrastructure within the area.
" We call on the FCT Minister to come to our aid. In this place once it begins to rain.
"We don't go out of the area and if we are outside we can't come in, our children cannot go to school because of the raging flood, coupled with the bad road.
"During the last Ramadan, some of the residents were forced to braek their fast on the road because there was a heavy flood that lasted for hours and prevented people from getting to their homes.
"As you can see, we don't have roads to the many estates in this Lokogoma, and this is how we suffer each time the rainy season begins", he stated.

FCTA opens Goodluck Jonathan Way, Villa Roundabout to commuters

Posted: 18 Aug 2017 01:01 AM PDT

The Federal Capital Territory Administrationin (FCTA) yesterday opened the Goodluck Jonathan Way and Aso Villa roundabout to commuters, so as to bolster vehicular traffic flow within and around the nation's capital.
Our correspondent reports that the Goodluck Jonathan way also known as Inner Southern way is a 3.5kilometer four carriage ways and 10 lanes project, has attained substantial completion.
However, the Villa Roundabout and Interchange – a major component of the Outer Northern Expressway (ONEX) was completed and already opened for use by commuters.
According to the FCTA, the road will serve a rapid alternative route to movement in the East-West axis in the Southern flank of the city.
In particular, the road awarded in 2010 to Salini Construction company, is a central drive way traversing A.Y.A, National War College and Ship House in Area 10, across to Games Village and Galadimawa.
Declaring the road open, the FCT Minister, Malam Muhammad Musa Bello, who was accompanied by the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, to inspect the facility, said it would stem traffic gridlock in the heart of the city.
He said the opening of the road, was to alleviate the traffic congestion being experienced within the city centre and the ever busy Abuja-Keffi axis.
He attributed the speedy completion of the projects to the commitment of the administration towards delivery of effective and efficient service to the populace.
In the same vein, Information Minister, Lai Mohammed, commended the FCTA for prioritising investment in provision of critical infrastructure that would boost the economic activities in the Territory.
He said the ongoing massive development of infrastructure targeted at opening up the nation's capital, was in line with the the federal government's economic recovery and growth plan.
On his part, the Director, of Engineering Service, Engr. S. H. Ahmad, the road and other major FCC arterial roads when fully completed would not only enhance vehicular and human movement in the city, but improve cultural lives of the city.
He however attributed the delay to completion of infrastructure in the FCT to paucity of funds, due to lack of political will and financial discipline by past administrations.

If You Feel Troubled, Remember These Promises From God

Posted: 18 Aug 2017 12:57 AM PDT

I was sitting there on my bed, tethered to the wall – unable to freely move around the house – by an iPhone charger. Hubby and I had finally tucked the kids in for the night when he walked over to me as I was checking email on my phone.

"What are you doing, sitting here by yourself? Come hang out in the living room with me. We can read together." Eric asked.

"I lost my 10-foot power cord. So, I have to wait here while it charges on this short one. Doing some email. I'll come down in a bit." I explained.

"Uh. Honey, don't you know . . . your phone will charge a lot faster if you don't use it? You're draining the energy while it's trying to recharge."

This was an ah-ha moment for me – because my phone isn't the only thing that's weary and drained.

My soul needs to be recharged with God's whispers of love.

When my soul is troubled, I need to stop and hear God's words of love -- rather than distracting myself with doing more and ignoring my heart.

Is your soul feeling weary too -- even though you're getting things done and all looks well on the outside?

Even among the daily routine, there is a quiet Voice -- God's whispers of love -- that no amount of busyness, weakness, guilt, failure, brokenness, stress, or hurt can erase:

1. I will be your shelter.
I will be your home. No matter where your journey takes you, you belong to Me.

"You are my shelter and my shield; I put my hope in Your word." (Psalm 119:114)

What We Really Need
We live in a world that is good at problem solving. Have a problem, just Google your question and a slew of search results offer you a different approach. Our world rewards productivity and results. We are so thin on time, we become fearful of wasting whatever slivers of time we have.

We forget that for life is a journey to experience God and not a plan to execute for him. We need to remember the most beautiful things in life, that truly sustain and give us meaning, take time to grow and be nurtured.

We were made to be God's beloved. Renewed. Vibrant.

2. No matter who hurts you with their words, I will heal you. I am your safe place.
"In the shelter of your presence you hide them from all human intrigues; you keep them safe in your dwelling from accusing tongues." (Psalm 31:20)

3. Don't hide your worries from Me.
I will never tire of your worries. Come closer and bring them all to Me. Again and again.

"Do not worry . . . look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap . . . and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?" (Luke 12:22-25)

4. Let go of what holds you and let Me hold you instead.
What others don't want, I want. You are mine. "Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name; you are mine." (Isaiah 41:3)

5. My choice to choose and love you is irrevocable.
You are forever in my heart. This I pledge. "He has set his seal of ownership in us and gave us the Spirit in our hearts as a pledge, a guarantee of what is to come." (2 Corinthians 1:22)

Population, Education And Nigeria’s Cycle Of Poverty

Posted: 18 Aug 2017 12:46 AM PDT

FRIDAY Column by Rasak Musbau

Nigeria's population today is ranked seventh in the world at over 192 million and is projected to grow exponentially to over 233 million by 2025. This should be of grave concern to everyone, especially in view of absence of national economic plans that could provide jobs for the new addition especially when we are already confronted with a large numbers of idle hands.
Basic knowledge of population growth teaches that population increase is only desirable when accompanied with increase in human capital development, economic activity and good governance. Frankly speaking, Nigeria's population is already creating a myriad of social issues. Taking development indicators such as literacy rates, poverty rates, quality environment, social justice, gender equality etc into account, one cannot but conclude that our population growth is presently more of a liability rather than asset.
Contrary to China's population which manufactures and sells its products to every other part of the world, ours is a consuming population that lacks the will to adjust structurally for the better. Thus, our increasing population is a liability if we look at it from the mirror of pervasive poverty, illiteracy rate, unemployment and insecurity in the country.
Except sincere national planning that adequately addresses the country's population explosion and education sector that can groom entrepreneurs and inventors is urgently activated and implemented, poverty and various crimes currently plaguing the country will continue to be a major impediment to soci0-economic growth.
Among the many assumptions as to why people commit crimes, the one that really stands out is the connection that crime shares with uncontrolled population growth, education and poverty. With our huge population, a lack of education is driving poverty rates; thus, causing those same impoverished and uneducated people to commit crimes. Unfortunately, what various tiers of governments are doing in education sector is not dominating our headlines as much as corruption does.
Now in the light of recently released statistics of numbers of out-of-school children in the country, there is no convincing indication that changes would come as regard issue of poverty-induced-crimes. In addition to 54 million illiterates which put Nigeria at the bottom in the global literacy index ranking, Children-out-of-school is today a ticking time bomb that must not be allowed to explode.
In what is clearly a national scandal for a country that is the world's eighth largest oil producer, the UNESCO Education for All Global Monitoring Report (EAGMR) says Nigeria holds the world record of having the highest number of its young people out of school. According to the shocking report, approximately 10.5 million kids which translate to one out of every five Nigerian children are out of school. Though this issue has been a prominent one for a long while, it is now about time adverse cultural practices including forced/misguided early marriages, Almajiris phenomenon, poverty and child labour are accorded urgent national attention.
UNESCO says Nigeria is among the four nations that have experienced the highest increase of out-of-school children since 1999. The situation is, therefore, deeply worrying taking into cognizance that the country returned to democratic governance in 1999. The situation equally provides an answer to why people are easily manipulated by ethnic and religious bigots for selfish agenda. It explains why people sheepishly get into the recruitment net of Book Haram.
With the current economic challenges in the country, children that lack basic education will struggle to live a decent life as most will still not have informal education and subsequently enter the cycle of poverty. When people descend into poverty in that way, they naturally turn to criminal activities in an attempt to make ends meet. Such criminal tendencies can take many forms. It can be something as simple as petty theft or it can escalate into money rituals and other severe crimes such as armed robbery and kidnapping etc. sadly, when people find themselves in such situations, they are rarely able to get out of it which is why it becomes a menacing cycle.
The difficulty or inability of the average Nigerian parent to cope with the requirements of basic education of the child is at variance with Article 2 of the United Nation's Convention on the Rights of the Child which stipulates that no child, irrespective of the parentage, circumstance or status should be discriminated against with respect to access to education. In addition, Article 4 of the Convention states that governments should make every effort to ensure that all children have access to education.
Having raised the problems, the next is to address the way forward. To break the cycle of poverty and crimes in the country, the large number of illiterates, out-of-school children and joblessness should be viewed by all Nigerians as an indictment of our collective humanism more than the failure of government alone. We must accept that all of us are duty bearers (as individuals, religious bodies, media, NGOs) who must accept to play role to ensure that future of many more children are not put at the risk of illiteracy and social esteem.
Having assented to and ratified the recommendations of the Convention in addition to affirming such right in Chapter 2; Section 18 of Nigeria's Constitution, the onus therefore is on the government at all levels to review existing policies and funding towards reversing the ugly trend of growing population of out-of-school-children and illiterate adults.
As this is national imperative, a series of Federal initiatives must emerge as the country might not be able to actualize its change agenda without making literacy a fundamental right of its citizens. This becomes imperative as research has clearly shown that the higher the rate of literacy, the better the potential to succeed and the easier for government to fight poverty, crime as well as reducing social injustice.
Indeed, poverty not only lies at the heart of the factors that hinder access to education but continues to be the main obstacle to achieving the goal of universal education in the country. For government to successfully enforce compulsory elementary education, there must be assurances that access to educational facilities as well as provisions of the basic needs, most especially feeding, clothing and educational materials of the children at that level are guaranteed.
It is, thus, important that State Governments where there is large number of out of school children brace up to the challenges by committing substantial part of their respective annual budgets into improving education. The time for warm words is over; the time for action is now!

Kylian Mbappe: PSG target is left out of Monaco squad

Posted: 18 Aug 2017 12:46 AM PDT

Monaco's 18-year-old forward Kylian Mbappe has been left out of the squad for Friday's league match with Metz.
French newspaper L'Equipe has previously reported that Paris St-Germain are close to signing France international Mbappe, one of the most coveted talents in football.
He has also been linked with Real Madrid and Manchester City this summer.
Mbappe was an unused substitute for Monaco's most recent match, a 4-1 victory over Dijon on Sunday.
In explaining that decision, Monaco boss Leonardo Jardim said on Wednesday: "We never punish our players. That is not the right word. Protected is a better word."
'Mbappe should stay at Monaco'
How Monaco became Europe's talent factory
He added: "When so many things are happening around an 18-year-old kid, it is our responsibility to protect him.
"Kylian is not at 100%. He is not in great form. But that is to be expected of a kid who is just 18.
"Even you (journalists), if tomorrow another newspaper offers you a contract where you will earn 15 times more, you won't be so good when it comes to tapping the keys on your computer keyboard."
Mbappe did play in Monaco's first two games of the new French season – including against PSG in the Trophee des Champions.
In July, Monaco accused several "top European clubs" of making illegal approaches for the teenage forward.
BBC Sport understands Manchester City were the only English club accused, although Fifa say they are yet to receive an official complaint.
Monaco are in a position of strength. With Mbappe sitting in the dugout last Sunday they won comfortably, and their next opponents Metz have lost both of their opening games. So they will feel confident of winning, even with weaker players like Guido Carrillo or Adama Diakhaby stepping in to partner in-form Radamel Falcao.
But is this a football decision or are they sending a message to Mbappe?
The 18-year-old started the French Super Cup and Monaco's first league game of the season but looked subdued and was subbed in both games. That adds weight to head coach Leonardo Jardim's argument that Mbappe's form is being effected by the speculation.
One man who will be hoping this gets sorted out quickly is France boss Didier Deschamps. In World Cup year, two of his brightest young talents – Mbappe and Ousmane Dembele – are now sitting on the sidelines due to transfer sagas.

Nigerian Allegedly Strangled to Death by SA Policemen

Posted: 18 Aug 2017 12:22 AM PDT

The Nigerian Union in South Africa on Thursday said another Nigerian, Mr. Uchenna Eloh, has been killed in the Western Cape Province of that country.

Chairman, Western Cape chapter of the union, Kanayo Onwumelu, told NAN on telephone from Cape Town that Eloh was strangled to death by a South African policeman.

NAN reports that Eloh hailed from Eziagu in Eziagu Local Government Area of Enugu State.

"We want to call the attention of Nigerian Government to the senseless killing of innocent Nigerians by the police in South Africa.

"At about 11.00 a.m. South African time on Wednesday, a Nigerian, Uchenna Emmanuel Eloh, popularly known as 'Monkey,' was killed by South African police officers.

"He was walking out of his house toward the bus station when a police van stopped to search him, suspecting that he might be in possession of illegal substance.

"Three policemen accosted Eloh, one of them, by name Williams, held him on the neck, suspecting that he swallowed a substance, while another police officer held him by the legs,'' he said.

The union official alleged that the policemen dragged Eloh on the ground until he started foaming and suffocated to death on the spot.

"This is not the first time such senseless killing of innocent Nigerians was carried out by South African police officers.

"We have reported similar killings to the South African Government and Nigerian High Commission in South Africa, but nothing was done to bring the culprits to book.

"We want the Nigerian Government to intervene to stop this brutality against innocent Nigerians and stop killing Nigerians out of hatred, racism or xenophobia,'' Onwumelu said.

President of Nigerian Union in South Africa, Ikechukwu Anyene, who also confirmed the incident, called for an end to the incessant killing of Nigerians in South Africa.

"Our government needs to do something urgently to make it clear that Nigerian lives matter. We have made suggestions on what can be done, but it is now clear to us that the endless talks cannot yield any positive result,'' Anyene said.

He said the union had engaged a lawyer to take up the case against South African Police Service.

The union said the police have opened an inquest into the case.
