5 Interesting Truths You Should Know About Marriage

Posted: 27 Jul 2017 04:12 AM PDT

It's not how a relationship starts, it's how it continues to grow and flourish in grace. When it came time for marriage, we (I Patrick and my wife Ruth) were thoroughly unprepared for what was ahead. Like a lot of couples, we were juiced up on the idea of marriage without fully understanding the reality of marriage!

All of us enter marriage with expectations. Many of our misconceptions about marriage get shattered early on, and others, take some time to break. While there are certainly plenty of misconceptions about marriage (some positive and some negative), here are our top five:

1. Your spouse will complete you – It's true that in the creation account (Genesis 2:18), there was something incomplete about Adam by himself. And so God graciously blesses him with a wife, friend, companion, and partner in ministry. But it is probably more accurate to say that our spouse compliments us and not completes us. Our heart is meant to be complete in a loving relationship with our Father, through faith in Jesus. This is the relationship that we truly hunger for and are always satisfied by (John 6:35). Even in the best and healthiest marriage, we will still experience disappointment, loneliness, and the absence of perfect love. Whatever you do, don't look to your spouse to do what only God was meant to do! Your spouse will compliment you in amazing ways, but they can never complete you the way God can.

2. Your relationship will get easier – Doing life together, instead of alone is good, but it is not always easy. God compliments us, protects us, and strengthens us by gifting us with a spouse. But marriage is not a cure-all! In reality, rarely does marriage take away conflict or difficulty; marriage usually magnifies it! In marriage, there is no hiding. We are two sinners trying to grow into selfless lovers. This is messy and takes time. It is the work of God's Spirit, changing us from the inside-out. The answer isn't to quit when marriage gets hard; the answer is to grow. Marriage won't always be easy but it is good – God is using it to make us more like Jesus.

3. Our marriage is all about us – When we first got married, we tended to just think about our relationship, and our future family. But isn't marriage meant for more? We would soon discover that marriage was never meant to be an end in itself. Marriage has a far greater mission – a bigger picture. Our marriages are ultimately meant to point to the person and work of Jesus (Ephesians 5:31-32). The love we have and show to one another, is a picture of the love Christ has for us. We are putting on display the love of Christ for all to see and know.

4. S*x will come natural – Ok, it's time to get personal. While s*xual desires may come natural, figuring out what to do with those desires takes a little more skill. We had to learn how to cook, learn how to drive a car, learn how to manage finances – so learning how to have a good s*x life should not be a surprise! But it often is. Many couples before marriage, mistakenly believe that physical intimacy will always come naturally or easy. S*x is God's good gift to a husband and wife in the context of marriage. Physical intimacy is the culmination of complete oneness. But don't be discouraged if it doesn't always come naturally. Just like everything else in life, a good s*x life requires communication, honesty, humility, and lots of grace!

5. You are giving up your life – Let's end on a more positive note! We've probably all heard this misconception – "Once you get married your life is over! So long freedom!" It is true that marriage changes your life. Whenever two lives are joined as one, there is a giving up. But what is gained is far better! As we think about our marriage over the past 18 years, we realize how much our life has been enriched by one another. There are countless ways God has used one another to encourage, equip, refine, and protect. We would gladly do it all again for what has been gained in the giving up of our individual lives to become one!

Marriage will not always be what we expected or dreamed of, but marriage by God's design and for God's purposes is good — very good! This sacred bond with intimate companionship and divine purpose is worth every ounce of energy required to hope for and work toward.

6 Things To Do Before Starting A Business

Posted: 27 Jul 2017 03:12 AM PDT

Creating or starting a business is a huge commitment. It's not an uncertain path, and often features details you may never have considered. To make sure you have covered all your bases before kicking off your business adventure, Jumia Travel shares some of the things you must do before starting a business.

Do your research
One of the essential things to do before starting a business is to research the competitive landscape. You do not venture into a business because you have a brilliant idea. If you can't offer something better or cheaper than your competitors, you may want to re-think starting a business in that area.

Ask yourself why
Every entrepreneur should be able to answer the question, Why are you doing this? It seems like a simple question, but you may be going into it for the wrong reasons. It does not matter if it is for money or for the passion. What is needed is for you to have both and maintain focus. Outside of that, you are probably wasting your time.

Network
Networking helps you get potential partners and investors. You need to attend events where you will need to talk with many entrepreneurs, who have either succeeded or failed. The most helpful advice to learn is the impact of their lifestyle including finances, personal relationships, and health.

Get a mentor
A new business owner should have a mentor. The mentor will offer his advice as well as experience to keep you on track and ensure you do not lose focus.

Survey your target market
Determine and survey a focus group of the target demographic for the service or product you are offering. You must ensure that you are delivering what your customer wants, not what you want.

Seek legal advice
This is another important point entrepreneurs must take note of before officially opening a new business. They should seek legal counsel. Do not make the assumption that legal counsel is only necessary when you get into trouble with the law.

Micheal Jackson's estate ordered to pay $9.4m to Quincy Jones | Mr Olumide's Blog

Posted: 27 Jul 2017 02:30 AM PDT

A jury on Wednesday found that Michael Jackson's estate owes Quincy Jones $9.4m in royalties and production fees from Billie Jean, Thriller and more of the superstar's biggest hits.

The producer had asked for $30m in the lawsuit filed nearly four years ago, while Jackson's estate claimed he was owed only $392,000 .Reacting to the victory, Jones wrote in a statement.

"This lawsuit was never about Michael, it was about protecting the integrity of the work we all did in the recording studio and the legacy of what we created," "Although this [judgment] is not the full amount that I was seeking, I am very grateful that the jury decided in our favour in this matter. I view it not only as a victory for myself personally, but for artists' rights overall."
Estate attorney Howard Weitzman said the estate planned an appeal.

Jones claimed in the lawsuit that Jackson's estate and Sony Music Entertainment owed him for music he had produced in Off the Wall, Thriller, Bad as well as the This Is It soundtrack and two Cirque du Soleil shows.

The lawsuit said the entities had improperly re-edited the songs to deprive Jones of royalties and production fees, and that he had a contractual right to take first crack at any re-edit or remix.

The Jackson camp held that Jones should be paid only licensing fees for songs used in those three productions.

What Ladies Going To Church Need To Know About Modesty

Posted: 27 Jul 2017 02:12 AM PDT

QUESTION:

Dear Dr. Barrier,
I've been in church ministry for 35 years and am seeing a trend of young women dressing like models on the cover of Cosmopolitan magazine for church. They dress in clothing that is too low, too tight, to short, or too see-through, and including those in leadership roles. Have we as women forgotten that God calls us to holy living?

I am aware that I cannot legislate holy living, what people wear, or Godly attitudes. These traits should come out of a relationship with the true and living God. But I am concerned.

Just because we live in a modern society, does not mean that we can cast off all restraint.
We who call ourselves pastors, teachers, and speakers of God's word are leading God's flock, leaving lasting impressions. At times, we look like, talk like, dress like and sound like the world. Should there not be a difference?

Are my hands tied? I'm not a prude, I like nice clothes and style, but not to the degree that my influence with the public as a believer or my relationship with my Heavenly father is damaged, in any form.

A penny for your thoughts...
- by Martha

REPLY:

Dear Martha,
My thoughts? I am thinking "Bravo!" How we need to hear the word of the Lord as spoken through His prophetess, you, Martha.

That's not all I am thinking.

I'll tell you what my 30-year-old daughter was thinking. As we read your letter together she said to me:

Remember the short shorts I wore to school in ninth grade even in the winter? I thought I looked cute. I dressed like all the other girls. I wore what all my friends were wearing. Do you know what would have changed my mind about wearing such skimpy apparel? If I had known what the men and boys were really thinking and imagining as they looked at me. I would've been so embarrassed that I would've changed my attire in a New York Minute. I wish I'd spent more time wanting them to think of me as an elegant, lovely, respected, Christian lady, not a girl with nice legs.

The struggle over what to wear — or what not to wear — is an issue of eternity. It's gone on for generations.

For teenagers the universal struggles of rebellion and assertion of independence are nothing new. In some generations the struggle is symbolized by appearance. Think mini-skirts, bra burning and long hair in the 60s.

Unfortunately, the current skimpy dress styles are not issues of assertion or rebellion. They are blatantly and unashamedly opening the door to sin and to the lust of the eyes at the expense of modesty and purity.

In the earlier years parents teach — and enforce — principles and values.

Things change when entering the teenage years. Parents must begin transitioning to clarifying values, principles and behaviors and then mentoring their children to choose to live accordingly.

As the teenage years progress, parents would do well give their teenagers more and more freedom to make their own choices. This is a touchy area if Christian values were poorly taught, or if the discussion degrades into a shouting match where every one gets hurt. At that point the dress discussion becomes just one more battlefield of rebellion that damages relationships and isolates individuals.

So, as parents, how do we handle our teenagers' desires to dress like celebrities — or slobs — as the case may be?

What am I thinking, Martha? Allow me to share some thoughts to consider:

First, clarify issues
  • Carefully have them consider that they can't live on their parents' faith forever. The time comes when they must personally decide for themselves whether or not they will take up the Christian faith and live accordingly.
  • Discuss the Biblical teachings regarding the relationship between proper dress and looking more like Christ than looking like the world.
  • Help your teen to see that this choice is not just a decision of outside clothes but of inner character and spirituality.
  • Make it clear that choosing to dress more modestly may actually lead to being a living sacrifice for Jesus (Romans 12:1-2). Acknowledge that the difficulty for living sacrifices is overcoming the incredible temptation to crawl off the altar. Help them understand that living for Jesus is costly but worth it at any price (Matthew 5:10-12 and 1 Peter 1:6-9).
  • Help them to understand that God uses difficulties to refine us to look more and more like Jesus. The decision to dress properly is not just something they are doing to help Jesus; they are getting a lot out of it, too.
  • Help them see the powerful impact they can have by daring to be different. Alternative dress in contrast to what everyone else is wearing may result in opportunities to lead people closer to, instead of away from Jesus.

Second, allow your teen the freedom to make his or her choice.
Stand beside them regardless. If they dress more modestly then praise God! But, if they choose otherwise, then pray that their consciences will lead them back to the better path.

If your relationship was not damaged by a sustained battle, you are in a position to help them pick up the pieces and start over again when they return for repentance, forgiveness and comfort.

Martha, again, let me thank you for such a poignant and relevant letter. You've spoken for many of us.

Whether I'm rocking an overpriced jacket on the streets of champs elysees or rocking rubber flip flops soaking up the adulation of the street in the slums of kibera, it matters none. Unshaven for weeks with morning breathe rocking a palm oil stained old tee telling bad jokes with my sisters in my man cave or well groomed in handmade rare leather loafers makes no difference. It changes nothing.

I am the confluence of global cultural diversity. I've meticulously and resiliently self tutored its complexity into my DNA by trial and error. The originality is singular only the substance is duplicable. God tailored my  entirety for one entity; ME.
It's a comprise far from not only what you wear. It is how you think. Your principles. Your choices; costs and effects. Your idiosyncrasy. It's in the roots imbibed by the man that sired you and men that mentored you.
Everything else around me is an Accessory. I am the essence. I give it life.
No brand, address, tribe, race, religion, creed, or ideology can define me. God created me this way eternities before my birth.
I cannot pretend to be anything else even if I wanted to. I've tried and failed woefully in the past. I am ridiculously comfortable and apt being me. Rules become inapplicable, even redundant. It's an attitude. A way of life.
Perception is the window. It's orchestrated conditioning to misinform you by disinforming you. Find your purpose and be informed. It is your open weapon.
I know people with $100 dollars budget walk into a room and everything stand still. I've seen people with $100k budget that make it look like a painful process and what is more cant hold a convo with a smart 8 year old.
It can't be bought. It is and will always be priceless.
Once you've figured out this truth, you will strive for a reach beyond your grasp. A consciousness and profound understanding of self. It is the mastery of your space. Your individuality. Your flair. It's in all of us whether dormant or dominant.

Why There’s Nothing Wrong With Ambition

Posted: 27 Jul 2017 12:42 AM PDT

Knowing how to handle ambition as a Jesus-followers is tricky. I've heard some leaders say that it's wrong to follow your ambitions, while others have said we need to be more ambitious. I've seen ambition destroy leaders, and I've seen it motivate leaders to do the seemingly impossible. This diversity of views on this topic complicates what Christians think when we feel the hunger of ambition in our hearts.

In its purest form, there's nothing wrong with ambition. You have it. I have it. It's one of the hallmarks of leadership. It's that desire to move something forward, to make something better.

Ambition is what drives us to want more opportunities, to have more influence, and to contribute to the mission with greater impact.

The problem for many Christian leaders is that they do not know what to do with that drive inside. And what you do with ambition will make all the difference in your ability to lead when you're not in charge.

The first response of many leaders, especially Christian leaders, is to look for ways to kill their ambition. I know many church leaders who struggle with their ambition because they see it as an expression of selfishness or a desire for promotion that might come at the expense of others.

If you've been taught to view ambition as a danger to spiritual growth, an impediment to being a follower of Jesus, the spiritual thing to do is to kill it. Some leaders want to get rid of their ambition, drowning their dreams, abandoning their hopes, and ceasing to pursue more. Why? Because they aren't sure how to channel that desire to lead and bring change into something good and positive. And sometimes potential leaders squelch their ambition because they are under authority; they aren't in charge so they abandon their ambition and influence.

When I became a Campus Pastor, I had a lot of ambition for our campus, for our teams, and for myself. I had grand ideas around how we would interact with new guests, what our music culture would feel like, how to bring synergy to student and children's ministry, and how to create more energy in our adult services. Right or wrong, I felt hamstrung by the structures of authority above me. Without realizing it, my ambition and vision for change had grown distorted. So I put it all on mute. I shut it down, thinking that the time wasn't right. It wasn't until a crucial moment in Andy's office (Andy Stanley is my boss) that it dawned on me I wasn't acting wisely or responsibly with my ambition. I was killing it. And killing it is not the answer.

Looking back, I can see where these distorted ideas came from. I was raised in a church where the desire to do something with my life was too easily confused with the desire to make something of my life. Ambition was outlawed in the name of piety and humility. The people were well-meaning, but the message was clear: kill the ambition before it kills you. When it came to ambition, I thought the rapper Ice Cube said it best, "You better check yo' self before you wreck yo' self."

The extreme of killing our ambition focuses on an internal solution to the problem of ambition. We look to blame others for our lack of authority, we contract a critical spirit toward those in who are in charge, and we end up sabotaging the very thing we're seeking. To quote Dr. Phil, "How's that working for ya?"

The older I get the more I realize that between the extremes there is usually a third option. It's more powerful than a title and more influential than a position. It's the way God originally made you to lead.

When one of the experts on the law asked Jesus about the greatest commandment, Jesus cut through the clutter and confusion of that question and offered a hauntingly clarifying answer.

Jesus replied: "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' – Matthew 22:37-38

If your hands are open to whatever God might want to do through you, even if that means that you'll never be in charge, you're in a good spot. Because when ambition is harnessed under God's authority for his glory, you'll find yourself leading in the way you were meant to lead.

A Prayer For A Thankful Heart

Posted: 27 Jul 2017 12:12 AM PDT

"I will give thanks to the LORD because of His righteousness and will sing praise to the name of the LORD Most High. O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens" (Psalm 7:17-8:1)

It is not easy to give thanks in every circumstance. But when we choose to thank God in the midst of difficulty, it defeats the forces of darkness in the spiritual realm.

When we thank God for every gift He has given us even when things are hard, the enemy loses the battle against us. He is stopped in his tracks when we come to God with a thankful heart.

Learn to be thankful for every blessing from God in your life. It is of great significance to Him if in the midst of great trials, we can be thankful. There is a way of looking at life from the standpoint of eternity. The reality of eternal life and eternal glory that far exceeds this life is a priceless treasure. Our afflictions are working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory.

A Prayer For A Thankful Heart
Lord, teach me to offer you a heart of thanksgiving and praise in all my daily experiences of life. Teach me to be joyful always, to pray continually and to give thanks in all my circumstances. I accept them as Your will for my life (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18). I long to bring pleasure to Your heart daily. Break the power of the enemy in my life. Defeat Him through my sacrifice of praise. Change my outlook and attitude into one of joyful contentment with my present circumstances. I thank You for… [Name a difficult circumstance in your life presently and thank God for it.]

Jesus, I want to be like You who obeyed the Father without complaint. You embraced the chains of humanity when You walked this earth. Convict me whenever I complain or compare myself with others. Give me Your attitude of humility and thankful acceptance. I want to be like the Apostle Paul who learned contentment in every circumstance. I choose to continually offer You a sacrifice of praise, the fruit of lips that give praise to Your name (Hebrews 13:15). I long to bring a smile to Your face. Teach me the power of a thankful heart. I know that Your truth dwells in a thankful heart.

A teenager who had a huge 'DEVAST8' tattoo across his face to look tough in prison is having the ink erased after claiming bosses refused to hire him.

The unemployed 19-year-old was desperate to find a job after he was released from prison earlier this month, but said the facial art put off potential bosses.

The laser removal of Mark Cropp's amateur tattoo was carried out for free by Briar Neville, senior laser technician at Sacred Laser.

After Cropp's plight made international headlines, he was inundated with job offers and is due to start a new scaffolding role next week.

According to Daily Mirror,Mark said: "It did hurt, it was like a burning sensation.

"Briar did just one section and I have to go in next week to see what reaction it has had. If it is all good and dandy I can have more done every six weeks."I'm excited and so grateful for it. I have been feeling quite emotional about the fact people have offered me so much help.
"I have been really pleased by everything, it has all moved so much faster than how I thought it would have. It is quite overwhelming really."

Before the tattoo
Briar administered Mark with numbing cream before performing the first test laser session to remove the pigment from the number eight on the right side of his face.

Emma told the Sun the design fuelled young girls' worries about body image.

She said:
"Do Primark sell padded pants for seven to 13-year boys to make their genitals seem bigger?"So boys are OK as they are but girls need enhancement?
Emma vowed to campaign to stop the sale of the bras, saying:
"I have two young girls. I do not want them facing puberty with this crap to deal with."

Sarah Champion, MP for Rotherham, South Yorks, said:
"It is disappointing. This leads to the sexualisation of children and increases the social pressure on them to look older."
Primark denied the bras were padded and said they are in fact "moulded".

A spokesman added:
"We would like to be absolutely clear that these bras are moulded, not padded.
"'My first bra' ranges are designed and constructed purely for support, comfort, and modesty and adhere to the BRC's childrenswear guidelines.
"There is no enhancement. This type of moulded bra is extremely common, and selling them is entirely normal practice on the high street."

EFCC recovers N328.9b from Conoil, Forte Oil, NNPC, Oando | Mr Olumide's Blog

Posted: 26 Jul 2017 09:45 PM PDT

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) says it has recovered N328.9 billion from nine major oil marketers in one year, overdue payments  for oil products lifted by the firms.

Spokesman of the commission, Mr Wilson Uwujaren, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja.

Uwujaren identified the marketers as NNPC Retail, Conoil Plc, Total Plc, OVH Energy Plc, Oando Plc, Forte Oil and Gas Plc, Mobil Plc, MRS Oil Plc, and NIPCO Oil Plc.

He said the recovery was made by the Kano office of the commission between July 2016 and July 2017.

According to him, the recovery followed a petition against the management of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and its subsidiary, Pipelines and Product Marketing Company (PPMC).

He said the petition alleged that N40 billion had been diverted by the major oil marketers in connivance with the leadership of the NNPC and PPMC.

"The EFCC, in a swift reaction, referred the petition to a special task force which swung into action by conducting discrete investigation.
"Findings by the operatives of the EFCC revealed that the oil marketers were actually indebted to the Federal Government of Nigeria to the tune of N91.5 billion between 2010 and 2016.
"Further investigation into the allegation also revealed that the oil marketers had continued to obtain petroleum products from the government without proper payment, in violation of the NNPC/PPMC credit facility regulations.
"A probe of which further led to the discovery of N258.9 billion.''

Uwujaren explained that the total amount of debt stood at N349.8 billion following the latter discovery.

He further said that upon conclusion of the preliminary investigation, officials of NNPC/PPMC and all the managing directors of the companies concerned were invited to the Kano zonal office of the commission.

There, he added, their statements were recorded following which the recovery process began.

"So far, a sum of N328.9 billion has been recovered from the major oil marketers. The outstanding debt now stands at N20.7 billion,'' he said.(NAN)
