5 Common Money Mistakes People Make

Posted: 26 Jul 2017 03:26 AM PDT

A rich man or woman without God is nothing but a poor person with only money. Vanity!
We're all guilty of it at one point or the other, but if we want to have more control over our finances and make money work better for us, it is best to learn to avoid these common money mistakes that can have such detrimental effects on our finances.

Jumia Travel shares 5 common mistakes people make when they travel.

Spending Money You Don't Have Yet
You might be tempted to splurge on one or two things and tell yourself you'll replenish the money with your next income, however when the income comes, you quickly realize other pressing commitments come up which you have to take care of. Ultimately, you end up overspending and being broke till the next paycheck comes. This will then put you in a tight and very uncomfortable financial position in the meantime and you might even end up borrowing to make ends meet; this is likely to launch you into a vicious cycle of debt (unless you're able to discipline yourself enough to make the necessary sacrifices to get out of it).

Forgetting That Small Purchases Lead Up to Big Expenses
Spending N500 here for a biscuit, then another N500 there for an exotic drink, might not seem like such a big deal at first especially when chilling on vacation. If you continue spending that way for a week, you would have spent N2500 more than you budgeted for and, though little, it can easily become a significant amount of money if you continue spending that way for a month. Little purchases add up, and rather than spending money frivolously, you can be using it to take care of important expenses like groceries. Pay attention to your 'little' expenses, if not you'll be surprised at just how big they can become.

Not Keeping an Emergency Fund
Never make this mistake because when these inevitable times come, they can leave you completely destabilized if you're not adequately prepared for them. It is best to have some money saved in an emergency fund or bank account, which you can earn interest on, till an emergency occurs. On the bright side, if an emergency never occurs, you would have accumulated a significant amount of money that you can enjoy or re-invest wisely to make more money.

Spending More Than You Earn
You either spend less than you earn or earn more than you spend- this is the simple principle. Your spending should never be equal to your earning (because you need to keep some money aside for emergencies) or exceed your earning (because this can lead to debt and avoidable 'gbese'). Living from paycheck to paycheck (that is, spending as much as you earn) or accumulating debt because you spend more than you earn, are very inconvenient ways to live. The importance of being disciplined with your spending cannot be overemphasized and you should make the necessary sacrifices or lifestyle changes to make your spending align better with what you earn.

Not Having an Allowance for Entertainment Spending
There really isn't much more that can be said on this topic than for you to ensure you have a budget for your entertainment expenses, which you must be disciplined enough to strictly adhere to. One thing that can help in creating an efficient budget for your entertainment expenses, is to understand your entertainment needs and set up a budget based on that understanding. Discipline then comes in, to help you determine the things you can in fact do without and the things you have to do without because you can't afford them. You can then comfortably settle at a middle point, setting aside an average range for your entertainment expenses that you're more likely to adhere to.

Things All First-Time Parents Should Know

Posted: 26 Jul 2017 01:26 AM PDT

My wife and I raised two little boys who were three years apart. I know they can be very trying. So, what I'm about to suggest to you comes from some experience with this subject.

You have few years to turn those boys around. They're young but don't be fooled. The character you build in them now is what they will live with the rest of their lives.

So, at the risk of seeming presumptuous, I have six suggestions on how to head off those boys before they self-destruct…

1. Turn off the television.

2. Take them to the park. A big park is best so they can work off all that energy.

3. Read to them.

4. You both need to stand together on the matter of discipline. If you don't, it's all over.

5. Never repeat yourself to a child. Tell him once. When he ignores you, pick him up and take him off to one side or in another room and lower the boom. Don't hurt him. Just be plain spoken. Act promptly. And never make a threat you do not intend to act on.

6. Get your family in a church that loves children. You need help, a support team. You cannot raise these kids alone. You need God's help and the strength of a family of believers.

I'm praying for you, young mother. God bless you and God help you.

Twenty year hindsight…

There's nothing in that six-fold counsel I would change. The radio program was for only two minutes, although I frequently fudged. Still, as brief as it is, the advice is sound.

Her boys would be men now, in their early 20s. I wonder how they're doing, what they have become, what they are on their way to becoming in life.

Should I have said something like this to that young mother? Would she have received it?

You never know. Perhaps I should. But I didn't.

I do not believe the character of a child is permanently fixed as a toddler, even if I implied otherwise. But so much of who they are is well established by the time they are five. My wife and I adopted a five-year-old daughter, so we also know this, and could tell you story after story.

Even if your child is an adult now, don't give up, friend. Pray and love them, and seek God's wisdom. If you do not believe in the power of prayer, you will throw up your hands in despair. Pray or despair. Those are your choices, I fear.

I suppose I would temper one piece of the counsel I gave in 1997. It's not enough to find a church that loves children. I've seen churches reach hundreds of kids, then do little more than entertain them, and they failed the adults miserably. The parents should seek God's wisdom about a Bible-centered, Bible-teaching church where Christ is honored, where people are told how to be saved and how to live for Jesus, and that loves children, protects them and instructs them.

God bless all young parents. Yours is the most important work on the planet.

And may God bless all the older parents whose children have strayed, have not been faithful to their upbringing, and are living out the story of the prodigal (Luke 15).

And one more. May God bless the older parents who came to Christ late and see how they failed their children, and who fear now it's too late to help them. God help these hurting parents and show them what to do now.

Let all of us be intercessors for our children. It's a scary world out there. They should not be sent out to face it alone and unprepared.

Faces Of Three Ladies Who Gang-R*pe A Pastor

Posted: 26 Jul 2017 12:56 AM PDT

Three women have been arrested after they allegedly detained and "r*ped" a pastor who had come to demand money he was owed by one of them.

The man, whose name has been withheld for ethical reasons, is a pastor at a local church and is said to be from Cowdray Park suburb in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe.

Sandra Ncube (21), Riamuhetsi Mlauzi (23) and Mongiwe Mpofu (25) who reside at the same house in Cowdray Park suburb, appeared before Western Commonage magistrate Mr Lungile Ncube charged with aggravated indecent assault.

They were remanded in custody to August 7 for continuation of trial.

Prosecuting, Mr Petros Shoko said the complainant had gone to the women's residence to demand money from Mlauzi sometime last week.

"On July 14, 2017, at around 7PM, the complainant went to the three accused persons' residence to collect his money from Riamuhetsi Mlauzi, which she owed him," said the prosecutor.

The court heard that the complainant was ushered into the house before Ncube held him by the waist and fondled his private parts.

"They forced him to lie on the bed and undressed him. Ncube sat on his chest and he tried to push her away. However, Mlauzi, who was in the same room, held his legs together and sat on top, pressing him against the bed," said Mr Shoko.

Mpofu, who was in another room, allegedly brought condoms and placed one on the complainant's manhood. She then allegedly assisted to hold the complainant down as he was resisting.

"Ncube had s*xual intercourse with the complainant once, without his consent," said Mr Shoko.

During trial, the trio denied "r*ping" the complainant but admitted indecently assaulting him.

"We were just playing around Your Worship. I did not think that he would take it seriously," Ncube claimed.

Mpofu distanced herself from the incident and claimed she was only called to bring condoms.

"I was not part of it. They just called me to bring condoms. We keep condoms around the house and there were some in my room, so I just brought them," said Mpofu.

Mlauzi said she wanted to "fix" the pastor, whom she accused of having a tendency of walking in on her when she was bathing.

Mlauzi said: "He always walks in on me bathing and claims to be unmoved as a man of God. I just wanted to see if he was going to be aroused or not. I did not plan to execute the whole r*pe thing, Your Worship."

Magistrate Ncube asked Mlauzi what she aimed to benefit from the attack, and she said she just wanted to prove to the pastor that he had feelings like everybody else.

"I wanted him to see that he was not special and was not immune to s*xual arousal. When I touched him, he immediately got aroused. And that is all we wanted to see," she said.

The matter was reported at Cowdray Park Police Station, the complainant was referred to Hospital for a medical examination. A medical report was produced in court as evidence.

Reps summon DG NEMA over alleged N1.3bn expenditure

Posted: 26 Jul 2017 12:05 AM PDT

By Umar Muhammad Puma

The House of Representatives Committee on National Emergency Agency, NEMA, has invited the Director General of the Agency, Mustapha Maihaja, over alleged expenditure of over N13 billion within one month.
The committee also threatened to issue an arrest warrant against the NEMA DG if he fails to appear before the panel.
Chairman of the committee, Rep Jibrin Santumari (APC, Borno) expressed disappointment with Maihaja attitudes of evadeding its invitations on three occasions.
"The DG was supposed to appear before us today to explain how he spent N13bn in one month. He sent a letter less than an hour ago that he's in Maiduguri. The main issue is for him to explain the utilization of ecological and intervention funds as well as the flood in the Northeast," Santumari said.
He said they requested documents regarding the expenditure and invited him three times but that he neither sent the documents nor appeared before them in person.
The lawmakers were angered by the fact that the letter addressed to them was written by a special assistant to the DG, Mohammed Ali Aji.
A member of the committee, Rep Bashir Baballe (APC, Kano), while moving a motion to summon the DG, said it was unbecoming of government officials to disregard the National Assembly.

Senate passes Nigerian Peace Corps Bill

Posted: 26 Jul 2017 12:05 AM PDT

By Christiana Ekpa and Ikechukwu Okaforadi

The senate has passed the Nigerian Peace Corps Bill at the plenary yesterday.
This is just as the National Commandant of the Nigeria Peace Corps, Dickson Akor, has said that, the Corps has reached its climax of struggle through the passage the Peace Corps Bill by Nigeria senate.
The Bill which was sponsored by Sen. Bayero Nafada(APC-Gombe), is meant to empower and provide employment for the youths, facilitate
peace, volunteerism, community services and nation building.
The bill was passed in a unanimous voice vote , after Chairman, Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, Sen. David Umaru, presented report on issues surrounding adoption of the conference report on the bill.
He said the major objective of the NPC bill, which was to provide employment for the youths, could be achieved by strengthening existing agencies and not necessarily creating new ones.
He said it would prevent the Federal Government from being overburdened.
He said the committee however observed that the powers and functions of the NPC called for concern and urged that they be subjected to further
examination.
"The right vested by the Bill in clause 37 (1) (a) on members of the Corps to "access all records of any person or authority" is too broad in scope and to that extent constitutes an infringement on the
right to privacy guaranteed by the Constitution, under Section 37.
"This power is unnecessary, given that the Corps is not an investigative agency,'' he said.
In his remarks, the President of the Senate, Dr Bukola Saraki said the journey towards establishing the NPC had been a long one.
He commended the committee for a job a good and expressed optimism that when signed into law, the bill would help to address the problem of unemployment among youths.
The NPC bill was passed in the House of Representatives in June 2016,while the Senate passed its version in Nov. 2016.
The two chambers set up a conference committee to reconcile the areas of differences in the passed bill.
Akor, also expressed satisfaction for been able to deliver on his promise and goals to Nigerian youths.
Addressing newsmen shortly, after the senate passed the bill yesterday, the commandant said, the senate in its resolution to pass the Bill, has given voice to the Nigerian youth in the affairs of this country.
"This is the climax of our struggle and for what Nigeria senate has done today, the Nigeria youth as a whole have now gotten a voice in the affairs of this great nation. We commend the senate for been resolute and not allowing to be distracted.
"The National Assembly has shown that, democracy is on course and we will continue to support ongoing intention, policy and programmer of Government.
"We have never solicited the power of investigation, detention, arrest, and prosecution. All we are asking for in this country, is that, the teaming unemployed must be meaningful engaged.
We are ever willing and ready to partner and complement with other relevant agencies.
"We expressed our heartfelt appreciation to the leadership of the Nigeria senate for passing the Bill today. it has been a very long journey but highly rewarding.
"We know all that, we have passed through in February, all the intention is to delay the final adoption of this Bill. It has been done and we give glory to God.
"While thanking senate, we also thank the speaker of the House of the Representatives and the leadership of the National Assembly because they are the first to adopt this Bill and today, the Senate has followed suit."

Benue govt plans to obtain loan to pay salaries- Ag. gov

Posted: 26 Jul 2017 12:05 AM PDT

From Uche Nnorom, Makurdi

The Benue state government has announced its intention to obtain a loan from an undisclosed financial institutions to pay salaries of workers.
Acting Governor of the state, Engr. Benson Abounu who made this disclosure yesterday while addressing newsmen after meeting with labor leaders at Government House, Makurdi, said already government is talking with some financial institutions (which he refused to disclose), adding that it is an uphill task for the State.
He explained that, to secure such loan, the state must get clearance from the Ministry of Finance as well as the Debt Management Office, DMO.
"Government will do everything possible to clear all salaries of workers. That is why we want to secure a loan from a financial institution. We do not want to embark on half solution but full one. The internally generated revenue, IGR which ranging between 250 million naira to 300 million naira is inadequate to augment with federation allocation to pay salaries," he complained.
Also speaking, the State Chairman, Nigeria Labor Congress, NLC, Comrade Godwin Anya expressed dissatisfaction over the outcome of the meeting, averring that the Paris Club Refund of 6.5 million naira that was given to the state is insufficient to pay substantial months to workers.
Anya, however, blamed the state government for being complacent and nonchalant about workers salary, arguing that with the declaration of emergency on salaries by Governor Samuel Ortom, it is expected that government would have sourced for funds elsewhere and augment with the Paris Club to clear many months salary.
Our correspondent reports that the state government is owing over six(6) months salaries to state civil servants while local government staff and teachers are owed over nine(9) months

Power generation drops by 2,841MW in one week – TCN

Posted: 26 Jul 2017 12:05 AM PDT

The Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, wheeled out 22,978 megawatts of electricity between July 17 to July 23 against the 25,819 megawatts generated in the previous week.
Power generation dropped by 2,841 megawatts between the two periods.
The daily statistics of TCN operations obtained by the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, from the Nigerian Electricity System Operator (SO), a section of the TCN, showed that power generation between July 17 and July 23 was taken by 11 distribution companies.
According to the statistics, the daily power generation during the period were 3,227mw, 3,504mw, 3,285mw, 3,656mw, 3,579mw, 2,898mw and 2,829mw, respectively.
However, the daily distribution to distribution companies (DISCOs) between July 10 and July 16 were 3,511mw, 3,973mw, 3,915mw, 3,947mw, 3,3511mm, 3,487mw and 3,475mw, respectively.
The TCN indicated that the national peak demand forecast stood at 19,100.00mw, of which 11,165.40mw was the installed available capacity; 7,139.60mw was the available capacity; 7,000mw was current transmission capacity and network operational capacity of 5,500.00mw.
The peak generation ever attained in Nigeria was 5,074.7mw, while the maximum energy ever attained stood at 109,372.01mwh.
Dada Thomas, the President of Nigerian Gas Association, said that the nationwide shortage of available natural gas supply was the most critical issue facing the Nigerian power sector.
Mr. Thomas said that his association, gas producers and investors in the country would be at ease if the natural gas shortage was checked at least in the short term.
According to him, the shortfall in natural gas supply, has been further worsened by pipeline vandalism.
Mr. Thomas said the problem was impacting on cost-reflective electricity tariffs, unworkable Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) and over regulation of gas price.
He urged the Federal Government to take actions to resolve the problem and other challenges that had made further investments unattractive for gas producers, processors, pipelines and transportation companies.
Mr. Thomas said that the shortages, being witnessed over the years, would be trivial to the massive economic and social disruptions in future "if we fail to act now."
A former Minister of Power, Barth Nnaji, expressed deep concern about the future of Nigeria's power sector.
Mr. Nnaji said the environment was not attractive for investment that would help address various challenges in the industry.
He said that foreign investors were not willing to invest in the sector because the Federal Government had not addressed major issues that would guarantee good returns on investment.
He said that many projects had been stalled due to financial constraints and tariff issues.
According to him, the tariff must also reflect exchange rate movements since "attachment of tariff to currency movements and adjustments must be done".
"Tariff review will also help DISCOs to recover costs and pay for gas."
Mr. Nnaji also said that lack of industry deregulation and absence of proper legislation had discouraged investment because "it is the only deregulation that will allow investors to consider investment in gas production and transportation.''
NAN recalls that Babatunde Fashola, the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, on July 5, said that the TCN would undertake 200 projects to improve power supply.
Mr. Fashola said at the Nigeria Energy Forum, NEF, in Lagos, that TCN was concentrating on completing the projects to ensure smooth transmission of energy to the national grid.
"Electricity is a very topical subject in the country; lack of it affects production, security, comfort and standard of education.
"If all of us will draw all energy needs from the grid, we will need over 13,000 Megawatts (MW), but unfortunately, the maximum we have from the grid is just 4,700MW,'' Mr. Fashola said.

Osinbajo seeks stronger executive, legislature ties

Posted: 26 Jul 2017 12:05 AM PDT

By Umar Muhammad Puma

The Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo has called for better working relationship between the executive and legislative arms, saying it will address the challenges bedeviling the country.
Speaking while declaring open the 16th Commonwealth Speakers and Presiding Officer's Conference, Africa Region in Abuja.
Osinbanjo expressed optimism that with stronger collaboration between the two arms of government, poverty, hunger and disease can be curbed to the barest minimum.
"Poverty, hunger and diseases can become history by pursuing those legislative and executive options that target education, food security and healthcare for all.
"The National Assembly and the executive have shown that when we work together we can make the quantum leaps in bettering the lives and livelihoods of our people,'' he said.
The Acting President said that the Federal Government was making tremendous progress in the agricultural sector due to progressive legislative appropriations.
According to Osinbajo, today by a combination of progressive legislative appropriation to agriculture, importation of rice has dropped by over 80 per cent.
"And we will be self-sufficient in rice production by the end of 2018.
'Again because we chose to work together the National Assembly at the request of the Executive appropriated N500 billion for the largest social investments programme in sub-Saharan Africa.
"The fund allows us to engage 500,000 young graduates in our N-Power scheme, to give cash transfers to a million of the poorest in our society and to extend microcredit to a million market women, artisans, and small businesses.
`It enables us to begin a social housing fund in the sum of N1 trillion with government putting in N100 billion annually,'' Osinbajo said.
He added that the fund will provide finance on a counterpart basis for developers and create mortgage facilities that will ultimately enable anyone to pay N30, 000 a month to own a home.
Osinbajo further said that the synergy between the two arms of government facilitated the decimation of insurgents in the North East.
On his part, Speaker, House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, urged legislatures in Africa to liberate their people from dictatorship by building strong institutions.
Dogara called for the establishment of networks and building coalition among the African legislatures in view of the need to drive socio-economic development and lift the people out of poverty.
He however, lamented that the
executive hardly reciprocates the gesture of cooperation extended by the National Assembly in effort to ensure smooth running of government for the delivery of dividends of democracy to Nigerians.
On his part, the Senate President, Bukola Saraki urged participants to use the conference as a platform for stock taking on the political progress so far attained in the continent.
"This conference should provide us opportunity for stock taking. Just how much political progress has been attained in Africa?
"How do we explore democracy as a potent tool to eliminate extremism and expand liberty and development?

"The meeting was specifically to discuss the incessant kidnappings that have become the situation on the Kaduna-Abuja Express Way"
He said the current situation of mass kidnapping of individuals on a daily basis on Kaduna highway was not acceptable them as representatives of the people.
"The IG explained that currently there is a joint operation between the Police and the Army on that express road.
"That the Police had contributed about 600 personnel and donated 90 patrol vehicles to the joint operation but of course this has not solved the problem at all.
"In fact the problem has escalated. The IG promised that from today, Tuesday, there will be another set of operation that is exclusively police-designed and this will be to reinforce the joint operation that they undertake with the military.
"We accepted that promise by the IG. We have taken him by his word. We are going to ensure that the two committees on police affairs of the two chambers monitor and see the situation if there will be any improvement," he said.
The leader further said that the inspector general of police raised issues of funding of the police force.
In his remarks, Deputy Senate President Sen. Ike Ewkweremadu said "we have emphasized over and over on this chamber that the primary purpose of government is the security and welfare of the people.
Ekweremadu said the matter was embarrassing and was not good for the image of Nigeria.
He urged the committee on police to keep the conversation going on with the Police while also appealing to the Police to redouble their efforts in order to minimize the issue of kidnappings.

Kim Kardashian sued by makeup artist | Mr Olumide's Blog

Posted: 25 Jul 2017 10:25 PM PDT

The Kardashian family and lawsuits are like peas in a pod.Kim Kardashian is the latest Kardashian to be hit with a lawsuit .

.According to TMZ,  Danish makeup artist ,Kirsten Kjaer Weiss Kim's ''KKW' cosmetics logo  is confusing consumers as they are similar to her  KW cosmetics line.
In the suit, Kirsten says Kim's infringement is "knowing, willing and deliberate" -- and it's intended to dupe customers and screw with Kirsten's bottom line.

She wants the court to immediately block Kim from using 'KKW,' and to award her all of Kim's sizeable profits, and to punish KK by making her pay damages.
However, sources connected to Kim's makeup line tell TMZ she consulted several veteran trademark attorneys when launching her KKW line to ensure there were no violations and her team is confident KKW Beauty in no way infringes on Weiss' KW brand ... nor do they feel the lines are similar.

Leave us out of your agitation, ex minister tells Nnamdi Kanu

Posted: 25 Jul 2017 05:25 PM PDT

From Uche Nnorom, Makurdi

An elder statesman and former Minister of State for Education, Professor Anthony-Jerry Agada has cautioned Nnamdi Kanu, an agitator for the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB and the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra MASSOB, to restrain from making claims that parts of Idoma nation in Benue State are their territory.
Prof. Agada who gave this caution during an interview with our correspondent in Makurdi, said Idoma people in particular and Benue state as a whole , has nothing in common with Biafra and their agitations.
He recalled that before the civil war, there was nothing like Biafra and even during the war, no part of Benue or Idoma land was captured by the Igbo soldiers hence they can not make such claims today 'When the Nigeria soldiers came to Idoma land in 1967, they were stationed at saint Joseph Primary school Orokam, my home town in Ogbadibo LGA, which is almost close to the boundary between the then northern region and Eastern region. So, the Nigeria troops started pushing up the Ibos in Obolafor and Nsukka in the eastern region.
There was no where captured by eastern troop in Benue in the northern region, no place ceded to Ibos, so why should the IPOB and MASSOB bring out a map given to them by their then leaders to misled people''.
''Those of us who stayed in Orokam where the war started, we did not feel impact of Igbo soldiers moving to Idoma areas or heard that Igbo troops captured any part of Idoma communities where IPOB is today laying claim to be part of their territory.
''Until the war ended in 1970, there was no claim of Igbo people to have captured any town in Idoma land. The only thing we heard was the B26 plane that came to drop bomb in Otukpo which was later captured and destroyed by the Nigeria soldiers. So, IPOB should keep Benue and Idoma region out of their agenda, we do not belong to them in anyway'', he said.
Prof. Agada who is Executive Chairman, Benue State Civil Service Commission, advised the agitators to leave Idoma people out of their agitation, saying Idoma nation can never be part of Biafra, adding that inasmuch as the Igbos have their fundamental human right to agitate, they should be reasonable so as not to cause chaos or deceive people that do not have a link with their ideology or believe in their quest for power.
He called on Benue people particularly the Idomas to remain calm and be what they are, since they know where they belong and should never be shaken in their originality.
