Five Challenges Of Nigerian Entrepreneurs

Posted: 23 Mar 2018 03:13 AM PDT

Nigeria is one of the countries in the world where entrepreneurship is a tough path to tow. Many who engage in business see themselves as mere traders, making them unaware of their impact and influence on aspiring Nigerian entrepreneurs. Some in this group are also mostly aversive to learning modern skills.

The entrepreneurship environment in Nigeria is full of challenges that only weigh down people with aspirations, the evidence is the high rate of unemployment but little or no drive of venturing into entrepreneurship by the teeming masses.

Here are challenges faced by Nigerian entrepreneurs:

Uncertainty
Most Nigerians will rather work for someone else and be sure of getting paid than ply the uncertain route of entrepreneurship without a guaranteed income. Doing business leaves you with no choice than to work too hard to earn your own pay cheques and control how you want to live your life. Struggling entrepreneurs are always reminded of how much their peers are earning working for others and how uncertain and time wasting the path they have chosen is.

Absence of role models
In most Nigerian neighborhoods, there are more people working for others than those running their own successful businesses, so the banker, the public servants and politicians are the role models. When we have more persons or a good number of persons that are successful at running their own businesses closer to us, we will be inspired and motivated to do the same thing.

Low demand for business knowledge
It's only a small fraction of Nigerians that love and appreciate the knowledge of business. People venture into business without the knowledge of structuring the business to win, team selection/building, legal implications, sales and digital skills. When failure occurs, they tend to blame the business or partners rather than engage in self evaluation.

Lack of vision
When it becomes tough rather than to reinvent and strategize, most Nigerian entrepreneurs throw in the towel forgetting the big picture. An entrepreneur with the future in mind will endure and forge on until he/she succeeds.

Education system
The system of education in the country dwells more on theories rather than engage students practically. This has greatly affected and increased the low enterprising and innovative nature of most Nigerians.

Dead Dapchi Girls' Parents: "Government Betrayed Us"

Posted: 23 Mar 2018 03:13 AM PDT

Adamu Jumbam, father of Aisha Adamu, one of the Dapchi schoolgirls who lost her life while in Boko Haram captivity, has said he is not happy with the Nigerian government and its security forces whom he blamed for the tragedy that befell his daughter.

While speaking with PT, Mr. Jumban currently in Dapchi village where he is mourning his 16-year-old daughter questioned the circumstances that surrounded the abduction and subsequent release of the girls by Boko Haram.

Speaking in tears, the middle-aged resident of Jumbam, a village 2km away from Dapchi, said rather than the Nigerian soldiers combating the insurgents after they came back to drop the girls, the soldiers simply "watched with folded arms while the insurgents left triumphantly."

The Nigerian government had explained that in order to safeguard the lives of the freed girls, it refused to confront the insurgents when they came to deliver the captives on Wednesday.

But this argument did not seem to assuage the pains of the mourning parents of Dapchi.

Speaking amidst a large crowd of mourners and sympathisers that throng his family home in Jumbam, the bereaved father said he has lost faith in the Nigerian government.

He said the way his daughter and others were abducted from school and killed while in captivity of Boko Haram would continue to traumatise him and her mother for a long time to come

"It was my worst moment in life when I was told she died," Mr. Adamu said.

"It has been a huge bereavement that befell me on Wednesday when these poor schoolgirls were returned and I rushed out to welcome them only to be told that my daughter was among those that lost their lives.

"I was told that they died on the way, and the Boko Haram simply dug the ground and buried them. This confirms that I have lost her, so we the family have nothing more to do for her than to mourn her.

"From the 19th day of February when they were abducted and taken away to the day they were brought back, I have not been myself. But I give gratitude to God when I eventually found out that she is no more, what I was scared and prayed against had come to pass. I pray God comfort her soul and forgive her shortcomings."

Mr. Jumbam said despite his bereavement, many of them in Dapchi could not understand the "mystery of the abduction and the drama of the girls' release on Wednesday".

"We have no option than to still commend the government for seeing that most of the children that were taken from us have been brought back", he said.

"But what bemused us most is that, it is very shocking and surprising to say that Boko Haram came into this community, picked our children without any one challenging them, and then brought them back on their own, dropped them in the town and then returned. That development has really unsettled most of us here in Dapchi.

"Every right thinking Nigerian should be disturbed by this development. Anyway, we are villagers and may not have insight to the undercurrent of what has been going on in this country. But to say the least, we have been cheated and dehumanised.

"How can one come to terms with this, for God sake? That Boko Haram came into our community, took our children and kept them for a whole month, no one could say where they are, then returned them without any form of explanation.

"They brought this kids to Dapchi dropped them in market area, spent about 30 minute in the community, then turned their vehicles and left. None of our security agencies that have been surrounding this community since February 19th made any move to go after them.

"Everyone saw them drive back via the route that they used to enter Dapchi. They even took their time to fix one of their vehicles before leaving. No single shot was fired against them. That was how soldiers watched and supervised their safe exit from Dapchi."

He says the government is not sincere in its approach.

"We don't know what was happening. But it seemed this government is only deceiving us or playing politics with the lives of our children. If they say Nigeria is no longer safe for us, that our security forces cannot protect us, then perhaps they should allow us to go to somewhere where the government cares about the security of its people.

"Can anything be more surprising than this? How can you beat a situation where a thief came to steal your property, harm members of your household, then few days later, the same thief came with the stolen item, dropped it for you and left, while everyone was watching and almost applauding him.

"These Boko Haram gunmen came back in broad day, confidently as though they were the ones in authority. What else could be more surprising than this? It is a clear sign that this country is gradually becoming a failed state where security is not guaranteed; where the government has to bury its shame and tell everyone to take his or her security into their own hands, because they can no longer protect us.

"My daughter, Aisha Adamu, was 16 years old, a bright little girl that wants (wanted) to be a scientist in the future. She was in her fifth year in secondary school. It was her friends who came back that informed about her death. When I asked after her, they said 'oh baba (father), your daughter Maidanwake (her pet name at home) lost her life on the way to the bush' (sobs…). She was fasting when she died," he said.

Of the 110 schoolgirls kidnapped in Dapchi in February, 104 were released by the Boko Haram, five died during the kidnap while one remains with the terrorists for allegedly refusing to put on a hijab and renounce her Christian faith.

2 Wonder Bank Operators Arrested, Remanded In Prison

Posted: 23 Mar 2018 02:38 AM PDT

The Uyo zonal office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission EFCC, on Wednesday March 21, 2018, arraigned Joshua Jude Asemota and Churchill Godwin Amaechi before Justice M. I. Sani of the Federal High Court, Uyo Akwa Ibom State, on a thirty count charge bordering on obtaining by false pretence and operating a financial institution without license.

The offence contravenes Section 8 (a) and 1 (1)(a) of the Advanced Fee Fraud and Other Frauds Related Offences Act of 2006, and punishable under Section 1 ( 3 ) of the same Act and section 56 of the Banks and Other Financial Institutions Act of 1991.

The duo was arraigned along with their company Global Divine Rich Resources which was not registered to operate as a financial institution. The defendants pleaded not guilty to the charge preferred against them by the EFCC.

In view of their plea, the prosecuting counsel Nwandu K. Ukoha prayed the court to fix a date for trial and remand the accused persons in prison custody.

But the defence counsel, Ndude Otong immediately urged the court to grant the accused persons bail on the grounds that bail was a constitutional right and that the offence was bailable.

Ukoha, however, opposed the oral bail application by the defence and quickly informed the court of the forged documents presented by the accused persons to the EFCC in a bid to facilitate an administrative bail. "My Lord, I have to inform the court at this point that the defendants were granted administrative bail and they presented forged documents to us (the EFCC), and this discovery was made during investigation. My Lord, if they did that at our office (EFCC), who knows what they will do here.

They should come properly before the court and make a formal bail application; these persons are capable of anything my lord. Here is the letter from Ministry of Lands that the documents of claim by the accused persons were forged. My Lord, we are not witch hunting anybody, but this is a renowned court of record and this should be on record," he said.

Justice Sani upheld the arguments of the prosecution and ruled that the application for bail be properly filed, while the accused person were to be remanded in prison custody.

The case was adjourned to March 27, 2018, for hearing bail application and trial.

7 Passengers, Driver Killed As NSCDC Officials Shoot Bus Openly

Posted: 23 Mar 2018 01:11 AM PDT

No fewer than seven persons were reportedly burnt to death on Thursday after officials of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps opened fire on a commercial bus on Milikin Hill Road, Enugu.

It was learnt that the bus had barely left Enugu New Market, located a few kilometres from Milikin Hill, when armed civil defence officials asked the driver to stop...

The driver reportedly refused to stop and sped away as the NSCDC men chased the bus in a Hilux van.

The Enugu headquarters of the NSCDC is near New Market.

It was gathered that some other agents of the security agency boarded a tricycle to join in the chase along Milikin Hill Road, which is bordered on both sides by a deep valley.

Eyewitnesses told The Punch that as the commercial bus was getting to the end of the road, the civil defence officers opened fire on the vehicle, causing it to veer off the road and crash into the valley. The vehicle reportedly burst into flames instantly.

Reports of the incident led to a protest by commercial bus drivers and other sympathisers, particularly natives of Ngwo town, where the passengers were reportedly heading for before they met tragic end.

Some of the drivers and youths reportedly attempted to protest at the office of the NSCDC around New Market, but heavily armed operatives repelled the protesters by barricading the road leading to the office and shooting into the air.

Some commercial bus drivers, who interacted with our correspondent during the protest, said the NSCDC men shot at their vehicles when they approached the building.

The Punch was shown some commercial buses with shattered windscreens and glasses.

A witness, who refused to identify himself, claimed that the driver of the commercial bus had refused to give the NSCDC a bribe before they started chasing the vehicle.

"The incident happened because the driver refused to give them a bribe when they stopped him. They went after him, shot at the vehicle and seven people lost their lives," he said.

At the scene of the crash on Millikin Hill, the correspondent observed that the commercial bus was totally burnt.

The charred remains of a passenger were trapped under the vehicle, which was lying on its back inside the valley.

An official of the Federal Road Safety Corps, who was at the scene of the crash, informed our correspondent that the corpses of three passengers had been moved to an undisclosed hospital morgue.

There were reports that the civil defence personnel involved in the incident had been taken into custody.

But this could not be confirmed by the correspondent.

A towing van was eventually brought to lift the vehicle, after which the trapped corpse was removed and put in an ambulance.

The body was reportedly taken to the morgue of the Eastern Nigeria Medical Centre, Enugu.

Police sources informed The Punch that a girl, said to be the sole survivor of the crash, was taken to the office of the Enugu State Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Danmallam.

Danmallam, who later arrived at the protest scene, said the girl had been hospitalised and could not talk.

He said investigations had commenced, adding that some suspects had been arrested.

He said, "This type of thing should not be allowed; we have made arrests. Investigations have started and we are asking people who witnessed what happened to come forward to make statements.

"We assure you that nobody involved would be allowed to go scot-free. This is not the type of case that can be swept under the carpet.

"I learnt that they (NSCDC officials) were chasing the bus; but I don't know for what offence.

"I want to assure the people that nobody is above the law. Whoever breaks the law of the land will face the consequence."

He said one person died in the incident.

The Public Relations Officer of the NSCDC, Enugu State Command, Mr. Denny-Manuel Iwuchukwu, said that the bus driver "abducted" a civil defence officer who entered the vehicle to force the driver to stop for violating traffic regulations.

According to him, the bus fell into the valley and burst into flames while running away from the NSCDC men, who were chasing the vehicle to rescue their colleague.

He said, "The state government ordered that commercial buses should no longer pick passengers outside the motor park and our men are enforcing the order.

"Today, the driver picked passengers outside the park and he was asked to stop, but he refused. So, one of our men entered the bus and the driver took off with him, thereby abducting him.

"He was told to stop, but he refused. We chased him and he fell inside the ditch. Our official has been found. He was injured; he can't even talk at the moment."

Iwuchukwu claimed that nobody died in the accident.

Efforts to get the spokesperson for the FRSC to confirm the number of casualties were not successful.

Commercial bus drivers and natives of Ngwo town were still protesting as of the time of filing this report.

DSS Didn't Brief Us On Married Man Abducted At Midnight In Lagos – Presidency

Posted: 23 Mar 2018 12:41 AM PDT

The Presidency on Thursday said the Department of State Services had yet to brief it on a port worker, Moruf Ajao, who was allegedly abducted by operatives of the agency in the Aguda, Surulere area of Lagos State.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, told The Punch that he could not comment on the incident because he did not know the victim's whereabouts.

However, a senior official in the DSS said that the only chance of the family was to file for the enforcement of the victim's fundamental human rights.

He noted that things were not being properly done in the agency.

The Punch had reported that 35-year-old Moruf was asleep with his wife and three children when the operatives scaled the fence into their house around 1.30am on Tuesday, March 6, 2018.

The gunmen reportedly took him away without disclosing his offence to him or his family members.

His wife, Mariam, said the family got to know that he was being held at the Lagos office of the DSS after the Lagos State Police Command, Ikeja, radioed security agencies in the state.

She noted that the leader of the Lagos DSS, one Mr. Wale, claimed that her husband had been transferred to Abuja, adding that checks at the Abuja offices of the DSS revealed the man was not truthful.

A Lagos-based human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, had said the actions of the security agency were against all known laws of a democratic society.

The Punch had reported the views of some Nigerians who condemned the action of the agency, saying it had taken the country back to the military era of disrespect for the rule of law and the constitution.

The Presidency had promised to react to the incident on Thursday after being briefed by the DSS.

But Sheu said he could not tell where Moruf was being held.

He said, "I don't know where they are keeping him till now. And if I speak now, it will be for the President. So, how can I speak on a matter that the President does not know anything about or discussed with me?"

A senior security official asked the family to hire a lawyer that could sue the DSS.

"Will you take my advice? Let [his] family hire a lawyer and go to court to enforce his fundamental human rights," he said.

On March 8, 2017, Punch reported that a cleric, Pastor Ejimozor Williams, became blind and suffered a stroke after he was allegedly tortured by DSS operatives in Lagos.

Williams was held incommunicado and allegedly tortured for three weeks.

Although the allegation of being an accomplice in a fake-dollar case was thrown out by a Yaba Magistrate's Court, the 47-year-old did not get compensated for his injuries.

On August 17, 2017, Punch also reported the case of another cleric, Chisom Anaele, who was whisked away in a Jeep around 2am after his siblings were allegedly robbed of phones and money by the operatives in Abia State.

He was allegedly arrested for a comment on Facebook.

In all the cases, the DSS, which does not have a spokesperson, neither issued a statement nor apologised to the victims.

Christian Dapchi Girl Who Refused To Convert To Muslim: "Let God’s Will Be Done"

Posted: 23 Mar 2018 12:11 AM PDT

Parents of the only Dapchi schoolgirl still being held by Boko Haram are hopeful that she will return home.

Leah Sharibu, an SS 1 pupil, sent a message to her mother that the family should pray "for the will of God to be done".

President Muhammadu Buhari said yesterday that the government would not abandon her.

Leah, the only Christian among the 110 girls kidnapped on February 19, was not released along with 104 others on Wednesday.

Five of the girls died on the day they were abducted.

Leah's mother, Mrs Rebecca Sharibu, fainted when she was told on Wednesday that her daughter was not released.

Mrs Sharibu told The Nation yesterday that her daughter sent a message that the family should pray for God's will to be done.

Mrs Sharibu has not lost hope that her daughter would return. She vowed to continue to pray for her to be released.

She said: "The released girls told us that the insurgents insisted that my daughter must renounce her religion. But she told them she had no single knowledge of Islam and could not be a Muslim. She was then left out of the Dapchi trip. They told her that any day she accepts Islam, she will be released.

"Leah, we were told was left behind with three Boko Haram women but she sent the message through her mates that we should pray for the will of God to be done in her life".

She urged the Federal Government to negotiate for her daughter's freedom, saying:

"So I plead that the government and the negotiation team should revisit the terms of the agreement to ensure the release of my daughter. Everybody has his religion and no one should be compelled to practice a religion he or she never wishes to".

How True? American Data Giant In £2m Deal To Stop Buhari

Posted: 23 Mar 2018 12:11 AM PDT

Israelis hacked into President Muhammadu Buhari's private e-mail and gave the materials to Cambridge Analytica, a firm hired by former President Goodluck Jonathan to provide "advertisement and marketing services" in support of his 2015 re-election campaign.

According to a report by "The Guardian" and "Observer", claiming to have spoken to seven individuals with knowledge of Cambridge Analytica and its campaign in Nigeria in early 2015, Senior directors of Cambridge Analytica, including its chief executive Alexander Nix, gave staff instructions to handle material provided by computer hackers in election campaigns in Nigeria and St Kitts and Nevis.

They claim there were two episodes in 2015 that alarmed members of staff and led them to refuse to handle the data, which they assumed would have been obtained illegally.

SCL Elections, Cambridge Analytica's parent company, denied taking possession of or using hacked or stolen personal information from such individuals for any purpose in either campaign.

The revelations are the latest to focus attention on Cambridge Analytica, whose activities are being investigated in the US by the special counsel Robert Mueller as part of his inquiry into possible Russian collusion in the 2016 US presidential election.

The firm is under pressure to explain how it came to have unauthorised access to millions of Facebook profiles. Politicians in the US and UK have accused it of giving misleading statements about its work, and the information commissioner has demanded access to the company's databases.

Hired by a Nigerian billionaire to support the re-election of Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, Cambridge Analytica was paid an estimated £2m to orchestrate a ferocious campaign against his rival, now President Buhari. Jonathan lost out to Buhari in the presidential race. There is no suggestion Jonathan knew of the covert operation.

Staff working on the campaign said in early 2015, they met Israeli cybersecurity contractors in Cambridge Analytica's offices in Mayfair, London. Employees said they were told the meeting was arranged by Brittany Kaiser, a senior director at the firm.

The Guardian and Observer have been told the Israelis brought a laptop from their office in Tel Aviv and handed employees a USB stick containing what they believed were hacked personal emails.

Sources said Nix, who was suspended on Tuesday, and other senior directors told staff to search for incriminating material that could be used to damage opposition candidates, including Buhari.

"It made everyone feel really uncomfortable," said one source. "They wanted people to load it into their email programmes."

People "freaked out", another employee said. "They wanted to have nothing to do with it."

One member of the campaign team told "The Guardian" and Observer" that the material they believed had been hacked included Buhari's medical records. "I'm 99% sure of that. Or if they didn't have his medical records they at least had emails that referred to what was going on."

When news of the London meeting filtered back to Cambridge Analytica staff working on the ground in Nigeria, it caused panic, the source said. Local security advisers told the firm's team to leave the country immediately because if opposition supporters found out, they could turn on them.

"What is clear is that the security of their employees didn't even seem to have occurred to them," said one former employee. "It was a very serious situation and they had to evacuate immediately."

An expert had flown in from Israel with a laptop, sources say.

And Alexander Nix, Cambridge Analytica's now suspended CEO, and Kaiser, asked employees to take a thumb drive and download the contents on to their own computers.

The content was private emails and the information, they were told, related to Buhari's financial and medical records.

One employee who was present at the London meeting said he had initially assumed the visiting expert was Mossad or Israeli intelligence passing on what he called "legtimate information".

But he began to realise this wasn't the case, he said, when he saw the reaction of his colleagues. One of them had "freaked out", he said. "He was like, 'What the fuck? I don't want anything to do with this.'"

The witnesses are clear – at least in their own minds. The information they were shown had come from hackers.

In a statement, SCL Elections, the parent company of Cambridge Analytica, confirmed it had been hired in December 2014 in support of the Jonathan campaign.

"We can confirm that SCL Elections was hired in December 2014 to provide advertising and marketing services in support of the Goodluck Jonathan campaign."

Asked specifically about the meetings in which staff described being asked to transfer personal information that they believed had been hacked, the firm said: "During an election campaign, it is normal for SCL Elections to meet with vendors seeking to provide services as a subcontractor.

"SCL Elections did not take possession of or use any personal information from such individuals for any purposes. SCL Elections does not use 'hacked' or 'stolen' data."

Shocking Story of Little Girl Used As Collateral for Just N100 Debt By Her Mother

Posted: 22 Mar 2018 12:06 PM PDT

A 38-year-old woman who was identified as Mrs. Veronica Igwe, 38, has reportedly offered her four-year-old daughter, Uloma Igwe, to her creditor as collateral for her N100 debt.

The Desk Officer in charge of Child Abuse/Maltreatment Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs. Cecilia Elom, while briefing newsmen in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State on Thursday, said the ministry received an emergency call on Tuesday, informing them that Veronica had exchanged her four-year-old daughter because of her inability to settle N100 debt.

Elom said immediately her office received the report, officials of the ministry rushed to the CAS campus of Ebonyi State University Abakaliki, where the alleged creditor, Mrs. Josephine Nwali, resides.

"On reaching the residence, we saw little Uloma Igwe with another seven-year-old boy hawking. On interrogation, they confessed to have been lured into hawking by Mrs. Josephine Nwali who they were living with.

"Uloma's mother, Veronica, informed our officials that she did not even know the woman she gave her child to."

Veronica said she had "business transaction" with Mrs. Josephine Nwali at the Rice Mill Abakaliki in August 2017, where she bought some items from her, after which she owed her N100.

Veronica said she then suggested to her debtor that she could bring one of her children in exchange for the debt.

She maintained that she did not know the residence of the woman she handed her daughter to, but that the transaction took place at the rice mill where they do daily rice transactions.

Elom said the Igwes hail from Okposi Umuoghara in Ezza North Local Government Council of Ebonyi State; while Mrs. Josephine Nwali hails from Okoffia in Ezza South Local Government Area of the state.

"Officials of the Ministry of Women Affairs invited Mrs. Josephine Nwali to the Office, from where she was handed over to the Ebonyi State Police Command for interrogation," Elom said.

Meanwhile, according to Punch, the Ministry of Women Affairs has concluded arrangement to take little Uloma Igwe to hospital for proper medical treatment.

Rich Kidnapper Evans Loses Big In Lagos Court Again

Posted: 22 Mar 2018 11:29 AM PDT

The Lagos State High Court in Igbosere on Thursday dismissed applications by Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike, alias Evans, seeking to quash two separate charges of kidnapping filed against him by the Lagos State Government.

Justice Adedayo Akintoye, in her ruling, held that the applications lacked merit and therefore dismissed them.

It was the third occasion that Evans would fail in his attempt to get the various charges filed against him quashed.

According to Punch, he had got the same verdict from Justices Hakeem Oshodi and Oluwatoyin Taiwo, before whom he also has pending charges.

In her ruling on Thursday, Justice Akintoye rejected the argument by Evans' lawyer, Olukoya Ogungbeje, that the charges against his client were defective and amounted to an abuse of court processes.

Contrary to Ogungbeje's contention, the judge also held that the proof of evidence filed by the prosecution in support of the charges disclosed enough material to warrant the trial of Evans and his co-defendants.

"Looking closely at the proof of evidence attached to the information in this case, a prima facie case has clearly been disclosed against the defendant/applicant," the judge held.

Citing sections 152 and 153 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law of Lagos State, 2015, the judge added that the charges did not constitute an abuse of court processes.

She held, "It is my view that the prosecution has complied with provisions of this section in view of the fact that every offence shall be charged separately.

"I also hold that the charge is not an abuse of court process – an abuse of court process means that the process of the court has not been properly and voluntarily followed.

"The defendant argued that the prosecution has filed similar charges against the defendants in other Lagos State High Courts, but the prosecution has shown in the proof of evidence that the victims and defendants are not the same in each case.

"I hold that the charge, as presently constituted, is not an abuse of court process, and can, therefore, not be quashed."

Having dismissed Evans' applications, the judge adjourned till May 7, 2018 for commencement of trial.

How Taxi Driver Tried To Kidnap My Mom In Lagos, Threaten To Stab Her - Lady Narrates

Posted: 22 Mar 2018 09:26 AM PDT

Lagos-based celebrity fashion designer, Tolu Bally, has taken to her Instagram page and narrated the story of how her mother was almost kidnapped and threatened to be stabbed by a popular cab service driver.

Here's how she shared her story;

"The numbers of unfavourable stories around transportation network companies in Nigeria seems to surmount every day, as people come out with testimonies of gory experiences at the hands of the cruel drivers that work for these companies.

This time, the most disturbing of it all occurred over the weekend with foremost Nigerian celebrity stylist, Tolu Bally, falling victim as an Uber driver attempted to kidnap her mum and threatened to stab her.

According to the stylist, her mother was going to the Mainland and was picked from her (Tolu's) apartment in Lekki by an ordered Uber. Her mother had reportedly noticed the driver was going through a wrong route instead of Ikoyi Toll Gate and had called to notify her daughter, Tolu.

The stylist called the driver for questioning and was told that he had to take the route because of traffic, which she knew wasn't true.

In her words; "I spoke to the Uber guy and he said he wants to go through the 4th roundabout to avoid traffic which doesn't make sense seeing as there was no traffic . I asked him to bring my mum back home and he hung up the phone. My mum called back, screaming that the guy isn't listening to her and all. I asked her to put me on speaker phone since he has refused to speak with me and told him to let her come down from his car if he can't bring her back home. Please note at this point the guy has gone offline and we couldn't trace them. I kept calling my mum's phone who obviously was screaming and crying in the car; telling him to drop her or take her home.

"At this point I knew something was wrong. So I left the studio and headed to the 4th roundabout, all this while I kept calling my mum but wasn't picking, eventually she picked her calls and said the guy threatened to stab her and take her to an unknown destination no one would find her. I didn't know what to do. I told my mum to stay on the phone so I can monitor them whilst driving to them".

"All through they kept exchanging banters. My mum kept telling him my children will find me and all. I noticed we weren't getting anywhere so I told mum to wind down the door glass and scream for help. She did as she was told and also grabbed him from the back with his t-shirt. They got into a small traffic and passersby heard so he had to pull over. My mum at this point has lost all energy and was shaking. The witnesses seeing how rough and unkempt the Uber driver was, asked him for his ID. He acted like he was going to get it from the car and ran away. I was able to track them down and found out that the Uber guy, who picked my mum from my house, was different from the guy in the Uber app picture," she added.

On what Uber company has done to the issue, Tolu said; "I have reported to the police and my brother has tried to reach Uber but the response has been slow and doesn't look like they understand the gravity of this offense. They only gave "12 Akinsanya Street" to the police as the location of the driver. But there are mass numbers of such address in Lagos. We cannot even trace the Guarantor's address. This guy is still working with Uber, and they have not asked him to make himself available for interrogations.

I never believed the story of people using Uber for kidnapping till now that it happened to me.

Businesswoman Docked By EFCC For Forgery

Posted: 22 Mar 2018 08:41 AM PDT

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Wednesday, March 21, 2018 arraigned a businesswoman, Amal Hassan, before Justice M. A. Nasiru of the Federal Capital Territory High court sitting in Jabi, Abuja, on a 2-count charge bordering on forgery contrary to Section 366 of the Penal Code Act Cap 532 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria (Abuja) 1990 and punishable under Section 364 of the same Act.

Count one of the charge reads:
"That you, Amal Hassan, being one of the directors of the Outsource Company Ltd, on or about the 2nd day of September, 2015 at Abuja within the jurisdiction of this Honorable Court forged the signature of one Sam Nda-Isaiah on a document titled 'The Federal Republic of Nigeria Company and Allied Matters Acts, 1990 Company Ltd by Share Special Resolution of the Outsource Company Ltd RC: 1133186 dated 2nd September, 2015' with the intention of causing it to be believed that the said document was jointly signed by you and Sam Nda-Isaiah who you knew did not sign it."

Defendant pleaded not guilty to the counts. In view of her plea, counsel to the EFCC, Takon Ndifon, urged the court to fix a date for trial.

However, Counsel to the defendant, Francis Mgboh, orally applied that his client be admitted to bail. He said that the defendant had been on administrative bail granted to him by the EFCC since the start of the investigation and had not breached any of its terms.

Ndifon opposed the bail application saying "there must be material facts before granting bail". According to him, the court cannot use its discretion on speculations. He urged the court to refuse the application.

Justice Nasiru admitted the accused person to bail in the sum of N5million with two sureties in like sum. The sureties must be resident within the Federal Capital Territory and must be civil servants not below Grade Level 12.

The judge, thereafter, adjourned to April 23, 2018 for trial and ordered the defendant to be remanded in prison pending the satisfaction of the bail condition.

How Your Worship To God Is Like A Lighthouse

Posted: 22 Mar 2018 04:06 AM PDT

The Holy Spirit was always and is always our resource to worshipping the true God, and to avoid the worshipping of any false gods.

It is difficult to know where to begin exploring something as transcendent as the Holy Spirit.

This ubiquitous Being has been present since the beginning of time as well, yet was only recognized as part of the godhead by the church fathers at the Council of Nicaea in the fourth century to combat the Arian controversy. Boy, were they ever busy. It would be so easy to dismiss the Holy Spirit's divinity for that reason alone. And many have.

But before you brush off the Holy Spirit as inconsequential, consider this:
think about the pervasiveness of electricity. It powers ours homes, office buildings, whole cities, and all our modern conveniences. It is a physical phenomenon but has no physical body. We can see it sometimes in its most scary and dramatic displays as lightning, causing fires and widespread destruction. But there are also milder forms, like electric currents producing static electricity that makes hair stand on end and gives a shock when a door handle is touched.

The most important thing to remember here is that scientists and inventors (like Ben Franklin, whose famous experiment with the kite on a string with a key brought lightning out of the clouds and into our homes; and Thomas Edison, who brought us the lightbulb) didn't invent electricity. They discovered it. Electricity had been in the world since the beginning of time as electromagnetism, one of the four forces of physics. All man did was discover how to order it, harnessing its power and its benefits for the flourishing of humanity.

I would like to think of the Holy Spirit in somewhat the same way but on a far grander scale. He has been operating since before "in the beginning . . ." (Gen. 1:1). I don't think it's possible to control the Holy Spirit, but I do think it's possible to understand his divine and glorious power. If we recognize the Spirit's power and submit to his authority to lead us to the Almighty.

To understand more of the Holy Spirit's power, let us return again to the lighthouse, standing strong and tall on the edge of a precipice or in the midst of troubling seas. See the light in the lighthouse? It's the lamp burning inside, pointing the way to safety. And remember that the light defines the lighthouse's whole purpose for being.

Now, imagine yourself to be a lighthouse, planted firmly in a world that you did not create, but a world that has created you. Ask yourself, "On what or to whom is my light pointing? To what do I look to for safety? On what or whom does my light shine?" We cannot look to ourselves because we are part of the mechanism.

The light of the lighthouse looks out; it does not look inward. It looks out to find, to search for lost souls. However, our light searches not to find, but to be found. This is the dilemma of the human heart. It looks for that which will give it purpose and a reason for being. This is glory. This is the act of worship. It is holding something up and bowing down to it. Of shining your light on something, around it, and through it, believing it will define the purpose of your light.

The Holy Spirit is the one that directs our light to God. Its job is to lead us to the One who can keep our lights burning bright, powering them and giving them their true purpose.
