3 Keys To Making Good Decisions

Posted: 26 Jan 2018 03:39 AM PST

There always seem to be conflicting opportunities that demand our attention.

The book in the Bible called Nehemiah talks about how Nehemiah rebuilt the wall of Jerusalem. As I was preparing for a talk on prayer, I read through this book, and three of Nehemiah's actions stood out as helpful to making decisions...

Be Prayerful
I prayed to the God of heaven, and I answered the King, "If it pleases the Lord and if your servant has found favor in your sight, let him send me to the city…" (Nehemiah 2: 4-5)

What God says needs to matter to us. Nehemiah went to God before he made any decisions; so I need to seek God's counsel over my decisions, my husband's, even my mother's!

By reading the Bible and praying, we will grow in our knowledge of Jesus and what he's asking of our families. He is not calling us to add more activities to our schedules, or keep up with the latest travel team. He is not asking us to serve at every church event. The longer I'm a parent, I more I realize it's not the actual decision but what God teaches me through making the decision that grows my heart and keeps me close to him in prayer.

If prayer were easy, everyone would do it. But those who've tasted the intimacy of remaining close to God in prayer know there's no better use of their time, and no greater impact they can make in God's kingdom, than to be dependent on Christ Jesus through prayer.

Stay Focused
While rebuilding the wall, Nehemiah goes into great detail about how each group worked on the section right in front of them:

Meremoth son of Uriah and grandson of Hakkoz rebuilt another section of the wall extending from the door of Eliashib's house to the end of the house. The next repairs were made by the priests from the surrounding region. After them, Benjamin and Hasshub repaired the section across from their house, and Azariah son of Maaseiah and grandson of Ananiah repaired the section across from his house. Next was Binnui son of Henadad, who rebuilt another section of the wall from Azariah's house to the angle and the corner. (Nehemiah 3:21-24)

God not only described who rebuilt the wall, but what specific part they were fixing. God is not only concerned about what his people are doing, but what specific job each is called to do. The builders were not concerned with anyone else's work — they focused on what needed to be done without getting sidetracked.

In this world of perfectly Pinterest-themed parties for children and occupations that promise every benefit under the sun, it's easy for me to compare. She looks like she is doing it all…how is the inside of her van is still spotless? Why do her kids never seem to fight? Why does he make more money than me? Often, this constant comparing leads me to make decisions for the wrong reasons. I want to look good to other people.

But when I make decisions in light of what's important to our family and what will bring glory to God, most decisions become clear.

2 Timothy 1:9 says,
He has saved us and called us to a holy calling, not because of our works but because of his own purpose and grace, which he gave us in Christ Jesus before the ages began…

The clear message of the gospel never changes. God came down to save his children for a "holy calling," and we are to devote ourselves to him.

Trust God
I am carrying on a great project and cannot come down. (Nehemiah 6:3)

Parenting is hard. Serving is hard. Working is hard. Relationships are hard; yet we are called to rely on God's promises. And when we rely on those promises, he will be faithful and true:

Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
and do not lean on your own understanding.
In all your ways acknowledge him,
and he will make straight your paths. (Proverbs 3:5-6)

Nehemiah did what God is commanding of us. He did not come down. When you must make those tough decisions, pray about it, make your decision, and then trust God to take care of it. Persevere and keep praying for your kids. Do you best at your job. Serve with your whole heart. Nehemiah had passion to do God's work; God desires that same passion from us.

When Christians grasp what God did on the cross — that he took on our sin so that we might live with him in eternity and have abundant life — our gratitude drives our desire to bring him glory through our service. We use our days discerning his plans for us so we can make the best decisions and live out God's beautiful calling, by the gift of the grace that saved us.

TRAGIC: Three school principals, others die in auto crash

Posted: 26 Jan 2018 12:24 AM PST

Members of the National Union of Teachers in Oyo State are mourning the death of three principals and an accountant in the state public secondary schools in a road crash.

No fewer than seven persons, who suffered varying degrees of injury, have also been hospitalised.

The Punch gathered that the victims were involved in the accident along the Oyo-Ogbomosho road around 5pm on Wednesday.

They were said to have attended a seminar organised by the state government in Oyo town and were returning to their respective destinations in Ogbomoso when a tanker rammed into a bus they were in.

It was learnt that the tanker driver veered onto the bus lane in an attempt to dodge a pothole but crashed into the bus.

The three principals, an account clerk, and the bus driver, whose identities had yet to be ascertained, died on the spot, while seven others who were injured, were rushed to the Bowen University Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso.

"Five persons, including three principals, an account clerk in one of the public secondary schools and the bus driver, died in the accident.

"I learnt that one of the deceased principals, Mr. Ogunremi, was supposed to retire in a few weeks' time. They were returning from a workshop in Oyo town," a source said.

The Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress in the state, Waheed Olojede, who is also the secretary of the state chapter of the National Union of Teachers, confirmed the fatalities, adding that five others were critically injured.

He blamed the Oyo State Ministry of Education for directing 340 participants from schools in Ogbomoso to travel to Oyo town for the workshop, saying a centre should have been created in Ogbomoso considering the large number.

He said, "The entire labour movement under the aegis of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Trade Union Congress and Joint Negotiating Council, led by Emmanuel Ogundiran and me, have visited the injured victims and families of the deceased.

"The NUT in the state received the news with rude shock. The NUT and labour movement are worried and disturbed about the wrong decision taken by the education ministry to compel 340 participants from 85 secondary schools in Ogbomoso to attend a workshop in Oyo town when simple reason and logic is supposed to have guided the ministry's decision to create a centre in Ogbomoso for the workshop while the facilitators move there.

"Labour advises that the ministry and other government agencies should always consider the number of participants as a key factor in determining the venue for future workshops."

The Oyo State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof Adeniyi Olowofela, told Punch that he led a delegation to the Bowen University Teaching Hospital and families of the victims as directed by the state Governor, Abiola Ajimobi.

"We are just coming back from Ogbomoso. The governor directed that I should lead a delegation that included the chairman of the state Teaching Service Commission to commiserate with the families of the victims. The state government regrets this unfortunate incident and will defray the hospital bills of those who are still receiving treatment," he said.

The Oyo State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Cecilia Alao, confirmed the crash in a text message.

She stated that the accident resulted from dangerous overtaking and urged motorists to be safety conscious and comply with traffic regulations at all times.

It's Never Too Late To Restrategize and Make Progress

Posted: 25 Jan 2018 05:01 AM PST

It's not too late to make resolutions in those areas where you want to see improvement. And to help you, I want to give you some ways actually to achieve your financial or personal goals so that you can be among those with successful results at the end of the year.

Make A Specific Goal
Let's assume that one of your resolutions in the area of personal finances is something like this, "I will get out of debt and save more money [this year]." That is a good resolution. But now you have to get some details in your plan. Your next step is to define how much you want to accomplish in each plan category and record them in the form of detailed, measureable goals. Here is an example:

"I will pay off so so amount in credit card balances within 12 months so that I can be debt free.

"I will save so so amount in an emergency savings account within 12 months so that I no longer have to rely upon my credit cards."

Develop A Plan To Achieve Your Goal
In order to achieve your debt reduction and savings goals, you could do the following:

1. Put together a simple budgeting plan;
Once you have a plan, spend a few hours working through the numbers to determine how much money you earn and how much you spend each month. This will help you determine if you need to a) decrease your spending, b) increase your income or, c) do both in order to have the amount of money you need to apply towards debt and save some each month.

This step is very important and one that cannot be omitted if you want to complete your goal.

2. Establish a separate bank account to automatically withdraw the amount you need to pay off debt and to save each month. For instance, you need to withdraw ABC amount per month to have XYZ amount to pay off your debt and save money for emergencies.

If you follow your plan correctly, you will have a surplus and emergency savings by the time you reach the 12th month.

Victory Over The Lack Of Discipline
Discipline and self-control must be applied one day at a time. If you can establish one daily discipline and stick with it for three weeks, you will form a new habit that will lead to the ability to become more disciplined in every area of your life.

A spiritual battle will be waged to keep you from believing that you can be disciplined. The enemy wants to rob you of the fruit of the Holy Spirit and cause you constantly to feel defeated when it comes to areas of weakness. Make this a matter of daily prayer, asking God to help you live one day at a time, to give you self-control and perseverance.

Like any endeavor, you may experience setbacks, frustrations or obstacles that discourage you. That is when you must not give in to the temptation to quit. It will be far more encouraging at the end of the year if it simply takes you longer or a few more attempts to achieve your goals than if you had quit early on.

Set a Reward for Success
It is a fact that events that cause a strong emotional reaction are more vividly etched in our memories than those that are emotionally neutral. We can remember days of grief, joy or fear in more detail and for far longer than just a normal day in our lives.

If you have had a lifetime of stress when it comes to managing money, use those bad memories as motivation to eliminate the continual fear, anxiety and worry about money that have become associated with trying to solve these problems. Imagine life without that emotional drain and use it to motivate you to persevere toward the opposite end of the emotional scale -- joy, peace and a sense of being prepared.

Now with a mental picture of your goal in mind, how would you like to celebrate on Dec. 31 if you have achieved your New Year's resolution? Be honest. Would you like to eat out at a favorite restaurant, give a gift to an important person in your life, be able to be more generous?

These are all perfectly acceptable forms of rewards if they motivate you to finish your goals. Since we are all built to desire rewards, this is an important element in your plan.
